Résumé – Les fouilles du projet Pétra Qasr al-Bint (1999-2018) ont livré un très grand nombre de céramiques relevant de contextes diachroniques, notamment du mobilier céramique importé (amphores et céramique de table) daté du iiie siècle av. J.-C. aux ve et vie siècle apr. J.-C. Cette étude préliminaire donne un premier aperçu général de ces importsation. Bien que numériquement peu représentées, la présence de ces céramiques atteste des liens commerciaux de Pétra avec le bassin méditerranéen sur une période couvrant l’ensemble de l’histoire de la cité. Pendant les périodes hellénistique et nabatéenne, il s’agit principalement d’amphores rhodiennes et coennes, de vernis noirs puis de sigillées orientales. Leur nombre augmente notablement aux périodes romaine et byzantine : les Red Slip africaines représentent le corpus le plus nombreux, en association avec des amphores d’origine variée (Italie, Espagne…). Ceramic imports from the Qasr al-Bint area: A picture of commercial exchanges in Petra between the third century bc and the sixth century adAbstract – The Qasr al-Bint excavations (1999-2018) revealed a large number of ceramics from various periods, including various imports (amphora and ceramic tableware) , dated from the third century bc until the fifth and sixth centuries ad. This preliminary study provides a first glimpse on a general picture of the imported ceramic and products. Although they are not many compared to the rest of the ceramic corpus, these imports evidence commercial links between Petra and the Mediterranan during all the city’s life. During the Hellenistic and Nabataean periods, they are mainly represented by Rhodian and Cos amphorae as well as black glazed and later by Eastern Terra Sigillata. Their number raised significantly during the Roman and Byzantine periods : African Red Slip represents the most important corpus associated with amphorae of various origins (Italy, Spain…). Late Roman and Byzantine contexts evidence imports from the Aegean Sea and Southern Levant. This preliminary study provides a first glimpse on a general image of the imported ceramic and products. المستوردات الخزفية في منطقة قصر البنت: صورة عن التبادل التجاري في البتراء ما بين القرن الثالث قبل الميلاد والقرن السادس الميلادي أسفرت حفريات مشروع بترا قصر البنت (١٩٩٨-٢٠١٨) عن اكتشاف عدد كبير من الخزفيات التي تعود الى سياقات غير متزامنة وخاصةً الأثاث الخزفي المستورد (انية امفورا وخزفيات المائدة) الذي يعود تاريخه الى القرن الثالث قبل الميلاد حتى القرنين الخامس والسادس بعد الميلاد. تعطي هذه الدراسة الأولية فكرة عامة عن هذه المستوردات. على الرغم من نسبتها العددية القليلة فإن وجود هذه الخزفيات تؤكد الروابط التجارية بين البتراء وحوض البحر الأبيض المتوسط في الفترة التي تغطي تاريخ المدينة بأكمله. خلال الفترات الهلنستية والنبطية تتكون هذه الخزفيات بشكل رئيسي من آنية أمفورا روديسية ومن طلاء أسود ثم من الأطباق الخزفية الشرقية. تتزايد أعدادها بشكل ملحوظ خلال الفترات الرومانية والبيزنطية: إن الأطباق الخزفية الحمراء الأفريقية تشكل المجموعة الأكثر عدداً بالاشتراك مع انية امفورا ذات أصول مختلفة (إيطاليا، اسبانيا)

Object of this thesis is the study of ancient spaces, their organization, function and perception by the people who created and lived them. The focus of this thesis is the architectural evidence from the residential area of theNabataean, Roman and Late Antique periods at the centre of the oasis of Tayma, NW Arabia.Excavated between 2004 and 2015, the rather well-preserved sequence of occupation levels supported their detailed investigation. The main aims of this study were to identify the spatial configuration of the domestic buildings and to understand how political, economic and social dynamics influenced the perception and conception of space in an urban environment. In this research, about space and its use, space syntax plays a key role. Space syntax is a technique used in spatial analysis to capture the set of abstract rules that define the spatial configuration at a defined moment of its period of use and through different occupations. Considering a large set of evidence and performing a multidisciplinary approach, this research shed new light on the spatial configuration of the buildings and on the changes that occurred between 2ndand 6thc. CE at Tayma. The main results of the analyses included: identifying access to individual buildings and movement within them and determining the functional differentiation of living spaces. This research puts Tayma into the large-scale changes attested between the Nabataean and Roman periods by several other archaeological sites in NW Arabia, as the spatial configuration at this site during this period seems to have considerably changed. On the other hand, the transition to the Late Antique period shows clear signs of continuity attested by the buildings which often reuse the spatial configuration from the Roman period. This interpretation might point either to an absence of large investments of resources, or to a continuity in the use of domestic spaces.; La présente thèse est une étude des espaces anciens, de leur organisation, de leur fonction et de leur perception par les personnes qui les créèrent et y vécurent. Cette thèse se focalise sur les restes architecturaux de la zone résidentielle, située au cœur de l’oasis de Tayma en Arabie du Nord-Ouest, et datant des périodes nabatéenne, romaine et tardo-antique. La séquence des niveaux d’occupation, mise au jour entre 2004 et 2015 et relativement bien préservée, en permet une investigation détaillée. Les principaux objectifs de cette étude consistent en l’identification de la configuration spatiale du bâti domestique et, par ailleurs, en la compréhension du rôle joué dans la perception et la conception de l’espace en environnement urbain par des facteurs politiques, économiques et sociaux. Dans ces recherches sur l’espace et son utilisation, le concept de la syntaxe spatiale –space syntax– joue un rôle essentiel. La syntaxe spatiale est une technique d’analyse spatiale permettant de saisir les règles abstraites qui définissent la configuration d’un espace à un moment donné de son utilisation et lors de différentes occupations. En ayant recours à des données nombreuses et variées ainsi qu’à une approche multi-disciplinaire, cette analyse permet de mieux saisir la configuration spatiale des bâtiments ainsi que les changements qui eurent lieu à Tayma entre les IIème et VIème siècles de notre ère. Parmi les principaux résultats obtenus, on peut citer l’identification des accès aux bâtiments individuels, l’analyse de la circulation à l’intérieur de ces bâtiments ainsi que la caractérisation des différences fonctionnelles observées au sein de ces espaces de vie. À travers cette étude, il a aussi été possible de replacer Tayma, dont l’organisation spatiale a apparemment était notoirement modifiée entre les périodes nabatéenne et romaine, dans le cadre plus large des changements attestés au même moment sur d’autres sites archéologiques de l’Arabie du Nord-Ouest. À l’inverse, la transition vers la période tardo-antique montre des signes évidents de continuité avec la période précédente, les bâtiments réutilisant souvent une configuration spatiale héritée de la période romaine. Par conséquent, ce résultat suggère soit l’absence d’investissements importants en ressources, soit une continuité dans l’utilisation des espaces domestiques.

National audience; La découverte de monuments funéraires sans équivalents connus sur un site du IIe-IIIe siècle av. J.-C. des Émirats Arabes Unis a conduit une équipe française jusqu’à Pétra. Là, parmi les innombrables tombes sculptées dans la roche, les plus anciennes présentent des similarités frappantes avec celles de Mleiha. Un voile se lève sur l’origine de la mystérieuse civilisation nabatéenne qui bâtit Pétra.

Water management is essential for survival in marginal environments such as the North Arabian desert. The present study examines strategies of water management near Dûmat al-Jandal, a major oasis at the edge of the Nafud. Through a synthesis of architectural, ceramic and geological data sets, we attempt to reconstruct the purpose and function of a water collecting system recently discovered in the desert margin of the oasis. We then compare this system with those found in other Arabian oases to understand theorigins and influences on the present system. We conclude that the closest comparablestrategies of water management can be found in Northwestern Arabia, where Nabataean systems blended with local strategies., Les aménagements hydrauliques sont essentiels à la survie dans un environnement marginal désertique comme l'Arabie du Nord. Le but de cet article est d'étudier la gestion de l'eau en marge de l'oasis historique de Dûmat al-Jandal, située au nord du Nafûd. Nous nous proposons de reconstituer la fonction d'un système hydraulique de collecte d'eau de pluie récemment découvert, à travers une synthèse architecturale, un court examen de la céramique et en interrogeant les données géologiques du site. Nous comparons également ce système de collecte avec ceux développés dans d'autres oasis d'Arabie afin de comprendre ses origines et ses influences. Il est ainsi possible de conclure que les stratégies hydrauliques les plus proches du système hydraulique à l'étude se trouvent en Arabie du Nord-Ouest, où les Nabatéens surent intégrer des stratégies locales.
