Abstract

Neste artigo, parte-se de perspectiva decolonial e interseccional para a compreensão analítica do enfrentamento à colonialidade nas universidades brasileiras pelas indígenas mulheres acadêmicas, abordando suas experiências vividas e lutas pela afirmação étnica. Uma vez ingressas na Educação Superior, enquanto corpos-territórios, são desafiadas a permanecerem em instituições que ainda não se pensam a partir dos e com os povos indígenas que as compõem. Portanto, a partir de entrevistas narrativas realizadas entre 2020 e 2022, de forma remota devido às condições impostas pela pandemia da COVID-19 naquele momento, são considerados os significados da demarcação do território acadêmico a partir da insurgência expressa nas suas vozes, que se elevam cotidianamente durante seus cursos e vida acadêmica, e da resistência corporificada na afirmação coletiva da identidade, dos saberes étnicos ancestrais e no compromisso com suas comunidades originárias. Afinal, elas não só resistem às pressões colonial-modernas, mas também re-existem, ou seja, reinventam-se como acadêmicas contribuindo fortemente para a produção de conhecimento científico e a construção de projetos e agendas políticas coletivas.

3. Physics instructors knowledge and use of active learning has increased over the last decade but most still lecture too much

Abstract

A survey of 722 physics faculty conducted in 2008 found that many physics instructors had knowledge of research-based instructional strategies (RBISs), were interested in using more, but often discontinued use after trying. Considerable effort has been made during the decade following 2008 to develop and disseminate RBISs in physics as well as change the culture within the physics community to value RBISs use and other forms of student-centered instruction. This paper uses data from a 2019 survey of 1176 physics instructors to understand the current state of RBIS use in college-level introductory physics, thus allowing us to better understand some of the impacts of these efforts on physics instruction. Results show that self-reported knowledge and use of RBISs has increased considerably and discontinuation is now relatively low. However, although the percentage of time lecturing is less than 10 years ago, many instructors still engage in substantial lecturing. Relatedly, we find that the majority of RBIS use centers on pedagogies designed to supplement traditional lecture rather than pedagogies designed to supplement an active learning classroom. This suggests that the PER community and beyond has done well promoting knowledge about RBISs and inspiring instructors to try RBISs in their courses. But, there is still room to improve. We recommend that change agents focus on supporting instructors to increase the percent of class time in active learning and to implement higher impact strategies.

4. Exactly Optimal Deterministic Radio Broadcasting with Collision Detection

Abstract

We consider the broadcast problem in synchronous radio broadcast models with collision detection. One node of the network is given a message that must be learned by all nodes in the network. We provide a deterministic algorithm that works on the beeping model, which is a restricted version of the radio broadcast model with collision detection. This algorithm improves on the round complexity of previous algorithms. We prove an exactly matching lower bound in the radio broadcast model with collision detection. This shows that the extra power provided by the radio broadcast model with collision detection does not help improve the round complexity., Comment: This the full version of the paper that is accepted for publication in the proceedings of SIROCCO 2022

8. Increased prevalence of gout in patients with inflammatory bowel disease: A population‐based study

Abstract

Abstract Background and Aim Arthritis is a recognized extra‐intestinal manifestation of inflammatory bowel disease (IBD). Studies show altered uric acid metabolism in IBD. This study aims to investigate the association between IBD and gout. Methods We used a multi‐center database (Explorys Inc.) consisting of data from several US healthcare systems. We identified adults diagnosed with Crohn's disease (CD) and ulcerative colitis (UC) between 1999 and 2022. In this cohort, we identified patients diagnosed with gout. We collected demographic data and identified patients diagnosed with IBD‐associated arthritis and those who had intestinal resection. Risk factors associated with gout were collected. Multivariate analysis was used. Results Out of the 69 260 780 patients in the database, we identified 209 020 patients with UC (0.30%) of whom 9130 had gout (4.3%). Additionally, 249 480 had CD (0.36%) of whom 14 000 had gout (5.61%). Males were more prevalent in the UC and gout group than in the CD and gout group (58% vs 51%). After adjustment, CD was significantly associated with gout (odds ratio [OR] 1.68, confidence interval [CI]: 1.60–1.75). UC was also significantly associated with gout (OR 1.38, CI: 1.31–1.44). In subgroup analysis with intestinal resection, CD patients who had intestinal resection had higher association with gout versus those without surgery (OR 2.34, CI: 2.25–2.43). Similar increase was observed in the UC group with intestinal resection (OR 1.53, CI: 1.49–1.56). Conclusion IBD is strongly associated with gout, with higher correlation observed with CD. Intestinal resection is associated with an increase in the risk of gout. Patients with IBD who present with new‐onset arthritis should be investigated for gout.

Abstract

We present jpf-logic, an extension of the model checker Java PathFinder (JPF). Our extension jpf-logic provides a framework to check properties expressed in temporal logics such as linear temporal logic (LTL) and computation tree logic (CTL). To support a logic in our framework, we (1) implement a parser for the logic, (2) develop a hierarchy of classes that represent the abstract syntax of the logic and implement a transformation from parse trees of formulas to the corresponding abstract syntax trees, and (3) implement a model checking algorithm that takes as input an abstract syntax tree of a formula and a partial transition system. The latter represents a model of the Java application. All three components have been implemented for CTL. The first two have been implemented for LTL.

Abstract

A partir de elementos e passagens da obra de Graça Graúna, pensadora indígena Potiguara, este artigo discute a importante contribuição da literatura indígena contemporânea na renovação da teoria social a respeito do Brasil e seu povo, tensionando a sociologia brasileira hegemônica na nossa representação de sociedade nacional, com destaque para a superação da invisibilização étnica atravessada pelo desejo de emancipação social em perspectiva pluricultural. Com base no estudo da questão indígena e do indianismo na literatura brasileira, desde as crônicas dos viajantes e missionários do período colonial até a atualidade, bem como na leitura da própria autora sobre esses cânones, é mostrado como os povos originários foram sendo convertidos, excluídos, tornados cativos, associados a perdedores e subespécies. Ou seja, apagados da condição de sujeitos e de suas realidades socioculturais pelos esforços empreendidos pela intelligentsia brasileira no sentido de propagar ideias sobre o povo brasileiro e sua identidade enquanto nação eurocentrada. Por fim, são apontadas a interpretação de Graça Graúna sobre educação e direitos humanos, sua atuação contra a tese do “Marco Temporal” e a favor da sororidade entre as parentes indígenas. Espera-se, com essas reflexões e análises, jogar luz sobre projetos literários alinhados às cosmologias, auto-histórias e saberes indígenas na produção de um pensamento social de perspectiva decolonial e sensibilidade feminista, na construção de novo(s) projeto(s) coletivo(s) utópico(s) para o país.
