Abstract

The physical and orbital parameters of Trans-Neptunian Objects (TNOs) provide valuable information about the Solar System's formation and evolution. In particular, the characterization of binaries provides insights into the formation mechanisms that may be playing a role at such large distances from the Sun. Studies show two distinct populations, and (38628) Huya occupies an intermediate position between the unequal-size binaries and those with components of roughly equal sizes. In this work, we predicted and observed three stellar occultation events by Huya. Huya and its satellite - S/2012 (38628) 1 - were detected during occultations in March 2021 and again in June 2023. Additionally, an attempt to detect Huya in February 2023 resulted in an additional single-chord detection of the secondary. A spherical body with a minimum diameter of D = 165 km can explain the three single-chord observations and provide a lower limit for the satellite size. The astrometry of Huya's system, as derived from the occultations and supplemented by observations from the Hubble Space Telescope and Keck Observatory, provided constraints on the satellite orbit and the mass of the system. Therefore, assuming the secondary is in an equatorial orbit around the primary, the limb fitting was constrained by the satellite orbit position angle. The system density, calculated by summing the most precise measurement of Huya's volume to the spherical satellite average volume, is $\rho_{1}$ = 1073 $\pm$ 66 kg m$^{-3}$. The density that the object would have assuming a Maclaurin equilibrium shape with a rotational period of 6.725 $\pm$ 0.01 hours is $\rho_{2}$ = 768 $\pm$ 42 kg m$^{-3}$. Abstract

In the pursuit of alternative and less invasive medical treatments, magnetic nanoparticles (NPs) have gained significant relevance. Iron carbides NPs stand out for their higher saturation magnetizations compared to iron oxides, while maintaining a suitable biocompatibility. In this work, high control is achieved over the composition and morphology of Fe3C/C encapsulated core/shell nanoparticles through fine-tuning of the sol-gel synthesis parameters. Specifically, the impact of decreasing each surfactant concentration added, nt, the same both for oleylamine (ON) and oleic acid (OA), has been explored. A minimum value for such parameter denoted by nt,min. was required to produce pure Fe3C@C NP-composites. For nt < 4 mmol, some minor {\alpha}-Fe impurities arise, and the effective carburization becomes unstable due to insufficient carbon. The magnetic properties of the materials prepared were optimized by reducing the excess carbon from surfactants, resulting in saturation magnetization values of 86 emu/g. (for pure Fe3C at nt = 5 mmol) and 102 emu/g (for Fe3C and <2 % w.t. of {\alpha}-Fe impurity at nt = 4 mmol). In view of this, several cytotoxicity studies for different Fe3C@C samples were conducted, exhibiting excellent biocompatibility in cell-based assays, which could lead to potential application at the forefront of biomedical fields.

Abstract

Abstract Perioperative risk assessment helps inform clinical practice for older people with hip fractures. This is a cohort study, where perioperative risk screening, including NHFS, was performed at admission, followed by an evaluation of 30-day outcomes. 503 patients were included, 73% female, 79.4 ± 9.3 years old; 58% presented extracapsular and 42% intracapsular fractures, with a 30-day mortality of 9%. The NHFS was higher in the patients who died at 5.6 ± 1.1 compared to survivals at 4.3 ± 1.5 (p-value 4 was associated with 30-day mortality observed by Cox regression adjusted by fracture type: HR 4.55 (95% CI 2.10–9.82) (p-value 4. The performance of NHFS was better than the traditional perioperative risk ASA score. Therefore, NHFS can be implemented in real-world clinical practice to estimate the 30-day mortality risk for hip fracture in older patients in Brazil. NHFS > 4 is critical for 30-day mortality and complications; this cutoff helps inform clinical practice. The present study might motivate other centers to consider NHFS in their perioperative risk assessment routine.

Static disorder in a 3D crystal degrades the ideal ballistic dynamics until it produces a localized regime. This Metal-Insulator Transition is often preceded by coherent diffusion. By studying three paradigmatic 1D models, namely the Harper-Hofstadter-Aubry-Andr\'e and Fibonacci tight-binding chains, along with the power-banded random matrix model, we show that whenever coherent diffusion is present, transport is exceptionally stable against decoherent noise. This is completely at odds with what happens for coherently ballistic and localized dynamics, where the diffusion coefficient strongly depends on the environmental decoherence. A universal dependence of the diffusion coefficient on the decoherence strength is analytically derived: the diffusion coefficient remains almost decoherence-independent until the coherence time becomes comparable with the mean elastic scattering time. Thus, systems with a quantum diffusive regime could be used to design robust quantum wires. Abstract

The evaluation of the colour of so-called ‘metallised’ glazes is an important problem, especially since there is no clear definition for this type of material. The study shows that a spectrophotometer is not sufficient for evaluating the colour of these glazes, whereas a goniospectrophotometer with four angles of viewing enables a set of data to be obtained that more closely describe glaze appearance. However, the description of the colour component of glaze appearance using twelve chromatic coordinates is difficult to handle. For that reason, an index is proposed, similar to the whiteness or yellowness indices, for the evaluation of ‘metallised’ appearance. This index is calculated from the goniospectrophotometer data, and has allowed ‘metallised’ glazes to be differentiated from ‘non-metallised’ glazes, in the set of samples used in this study.La evaluación del color de los vidriados denominados “metalizados” supone un problema importante, máxime cuando no existe una definición clara para este tipo de materiales. Se demuestra que no es suficiente un espectrofotómetro para evaluar el color de estos vidriados, mientras que un gonioespectrofotómetro de cuatro ángulos permite obtener un conjunto de datos que se aproximan en mayor medida a una descripción de su aspecto. Sin embargo la descripción de la componente de color del aspecto mediante doce coordenadas cromáticas es difícil de manejar y por ello se propone un índice para evaluar el aspecto “metalizado” a semejanza de los índices de blancura o amarillez. Dicho índice se calcula a partir de los datos del gonioespectrofotómetro, y ha permitido diferenciar entre vidriados “metalizados” y “no metalizados” dentro del conjunto de muestras utilizadas en este trabajo.

Abstract

Background: There is no consensus on the most effective strategy for Postoperative Pulmonary Complication (PPC) reduction. This study hypothesized that a Goal-Directed Fluid Therapy (GDFT) protocol of infusion of predetermined boluses reduces the occurrence of PPC in patients undergoing elective open abdominal surgeries when compared with Standard of Care (SOC) strategy. Methods: Randomized, prospective, controlled study, conducted from May 2012 to December 2014, with ASA I, II or III patients undergoing open abdominal surgeries, lasting at least 120 min, under general anesthesia, randomized into the SOC and the GDFT group. In the SOC, fluid administration was according to the anesthesiologist's discretion. In the GDFT, the intervention protocol, based on bolus infusion according to blood pressure and delta pulse pressure, was applied. Patients were postoperatively evaluated by an anesthesiologist blinded to the group allocation regarding PPC incidence, mortality, and Length of Hospital Stay (LOHS). Results: Forty-two patients in the SOC group and 43 in the GDFT group. Nineteen patients (45%) in the SOC and 6 in the GDFT (14%) had at least one PPC (p = 0.003). There was no difference in mortality or LOHS between the groups. Among the patients with PPC, four died (25%), compared to two deaths in patients without PPC (3%) (p = 0.001). The LOHS had a median of 14.5 days in the group with PPC and 9 days in the group without PPC (p = 0.001). Conclusion: The GDFT protocol resulted in a lower rate of PPC; however, the LOHS and mortality did not reduce.

Background Perioperative thoracic epidural analgesia (TEA) is commonly used in hepatectomy patients since it is opioid-sparing. However, TEA has a high failure rate and is associated with potentially devastating complications (spinal haematoma) and the risk is increased with hepatectomy. Thus, some centres favour systemic opioid-based modalities which, in turn, are associated with inferior analgesia and well-known risks/side-effects. Hence, alternative analgesic methods are desirable. Paravertebral block (PVB) has been used in liver resection with advantages including haemodynamic stability, low failure rates, and low risk of spinal haematoma. The purpose of this pilot RCT is to compare continuous TEA (traditional standard of care is local anesthetic (LA) + opioids) with PVB (traditional standard of care is with LA without opioid) for patients undergoing hepatectomy. We hypothesise that pain outcomes will be comparable between groups, but PVB patients will require fewer perioperative vasopressors/blood products, have fewer opioid-related side effects and a shorter hospital length of stay. Methods With ethics approval, this non-inferiority, pilot RCT with a convenience sample of 50 hepatectomy patients will examine whether PVB imparts analgesia comparable to TEA but with fewer adverse effects. Primary outcomes are surrogates of analgesia for 72 h postoperatively (i.e., opioid consumption, time to first analgesic request and pain scores at rest and with coughing); Secondary outcomes are blood products/fluids administered; side effects/complications until 72 h postoperatively; length of hospital stay. The results will be used to plan a large multicentre trial comparing TEA vs. PVB in hepatectomy patients. This study has a high potential to positively impact the quality/safety of patient care. Abstract

A controlled local enhancement of superconductivity yields unexpected modifications in the vortex dynamics. This local enhancement has been achieved by designing an array of superconducting Nb nanostructures embedded in a V superconducting film. The most remarkable findings are: i) vanishing of the main commensurability effect between the vortex lattice and the array unit cell, ii) hysteretic behavior in the vortex dynamics, iii) broadening of the vortex liquid phase and iv) strong softening of the vortex lattice. These effects can be controlled and they can be quenched by reducing the Nb array superconducting performance applying an in-plane magnetic field. These results can be explained by taking into account the repulsive potential landscape created by the superconducting Nb nanostructures on which vortices move., Comment: 16 pages, 8 figures

Abstract

Perioperative risk assessment helps inform clinical practice for older people with hip fractures. This is a cohort study, where perioperative risk screening, including NHFS, was performed at admission, followed by an evaluation of 30-day outcomes. 503 patients were included, 73% female, 79.4 ± 9.3 years old; 58% presented extracapsular and 42% intracapsular fractures, with a 30-day mortality of 9%. The NHFS was higher in the patients who died at 5.6 ± 1.1 compared to survivals at 4.3 ± 1.5 (p-value < 0.001). NHFS > 4 was associated with 30-day mortality observed by Cox regression adjusted by fracture type: HR 4.55 (95% CI 2.10–9.82) (p-value < 0.001) and Kaplan-Meyer Curve (HR 3.94; 95% CI 2.19–7.07; p-value < 0.001). ROC curve showed the accuracy of NHFS in explaining 30-day mortality (AUC 0.74; 95% CI 0.67–0.81). Complications were higher among patients with NHFS > 4. The performance of NHFS was better than the traditional perioperative risk ASA score. Therefore, NHFS can be implemented in real-world clinical practice to estimate the 30-day mortality risk for hip fracture in older patients in Brazil. NHFS > 4 is critical for 30-day mortality and complications; this cutoff helps inform clinical practice. Abstract

Background: Perioperative thoracic epidural analgesia (TEA) is commonly used in hepatectomy patients since it is opioid-sparing and reduces cardiorespiratory complications. However, TEA has a high failure rate and is associated with potentially devastating complications (particularly spinal haematoma) and the risk is likely increased with hepatectomy. Thus, some centres favour systemic opioid-based modalities which, in turn, are associated with inferior analgesia and well-known risks/side-effects. Hence, alternative analgesic methods are desirable. Paravertebral block (PVB) has been used in liver resection with advantages including hemodynamic stability, low failure rates, and low risk of spinal haematoma. Our purpose is to conduct a blinded, pilot RCT with hepatectomy patients randomised to receive TEA or PVB for perioperative analgesia. Our hypothesis is that opioid consumption, time to first analgesic request, and pain scores will be comparable between groups, but PVB patients will require fewer perioperative vasopressors/blood products, and have fewer adverse events and a shorter hospital stay. Methods: With ethics approval, this non-inferiority, pilot RCT with a convenience sample of 50 hepatectomy patients will examine whether PVB imparts analgesia comparable to TEA but with fewer adverse effects. Primary outcomes are surrogates of analgesia for 72 h postoperatively (i.e., opioid consumption, time to first analgesic request and pain scores at rest and with coughing); Secondary outcomes are blood products/fluids administered; side effects/complications until 72 h postoperatively; length of hospital stay. The results will be used to plan a large multicentre trial comparing TEA vs. PVB in hepatectomy patients. This study has a high potential to positively impact the quality/safety of patient care. Abstract

Aim: The aim of this study is to explore children's depictions of nursing professionals, identifying shared and differential visual and symbolic elements as a function of gender, the period during which the drawing was made (pre‐/postpandemic) and whether or not one has a relative who works in the same profession. Background: Drawing circumnavigates the limits imposed by literacy and gives a voice to children who are able to express their personal feelings and subconscious through the drawn object. Theories of social representations and identity strive to explore the way in which children perceive and value the role of nurses in society. Methods: With the question, 'what is nursing to you?' providing the foundation, qualitative visual analysis was performed based on bottom‐up inductive logic, analysing 105 drawings through the software CAQDAS Atlas‐ti. Results: Nine categories emerged that corresponded to uniform, typically used tools, represented functions, decorative elements, associated individuals, work setting and facial expression. Differences were identified as a function of the gender of the child respondent, familiarity with the profession and the period during which the drawing was made (pre‐/postpandemic). Conclusion: The present research strives to contribute towards understanding of perceptions of nursing figures in the symbolic world of children, taking a more complete look at the view children have of nursing and the way in which they conceive and value healthcare and caring for health. Abstract

Background/Objectives: Student distress is diverse and manifests itself in a variety of ways. Driven by the constant pressure to meet academic and personal expectations, many students experience a deep sense of insufficiency and hopelessness. Anxiety and depression are widespread and are often accompanied by self-critical thoughts and feelings of worthlessness. Seeking temporary relief that often exacerbates their long-term struggles, some students resort to self-harm as a way to manage their emotional pain. Methods: This study employs an exploratory qualitative design with a phenomenological approach to deeply examine students' experiences of suffering. Using semi-structured interviews, the study captures detailed narratives from 17 purposely selected students, providing a rich understanding of their lived experiences. Adhering to COREQ guidelines (Consolidated Criteria for Reporting Qualitative Studies). Results: The analysis identified four main themes: the concept of suffering, its causes, students' responses, and coping strategies. Eleven sub-themes were identified, highlighting the significant challenges students face, including low self-esteem, anxiety, depression, and self-harm. These problems are increased by academic stress and social pressure derived from the intensive use of social networks. The constant social comparison and the search for external validation on social networks generate feelings of inadequacy and emotional exhaustion. Students often lack effective strategies to manage these pressures. In addition, bullying and the absence of meaningful relationships in the academic environment increase their suffering. Conclusions: This study provides a novel contribution by focusing on the lived experiences of nursing students and emphasizing the importance of the compassionate university model as a framework for addressing student suffering. It highlights the urgent need to implement strategies for support and compassion in educational institutions centred on emotional management, presence, listening, and specific mindfulness and stress management programmes. Additionally, fostering healthier and more mindful use of social media is crucial to help students manage their expectations, reduce their suffering, and cultivate self-compassion. Abstract

Objective: to propose a new electrostatic theory for sap ascent in tall trees. Design/Methodology/Approach: we accomplished a detailed review of the different theories published regarding sap ascent by capillary in trees. The new theory proposed herein is based on some scientific studies of physiologists, biophysicists, and other branches of science, which expose the scientific bases of the water movement in the plant, but who have not proposed an integrated framework. Results: the proposed theory analyzed prior knowledge, then based on it, a new explanation is proposed for the ascent of sap in trees. Study Limitations/Implications: no field experiments were carried out to verify the increase in sap ascent in trees with heights greater than 40 m. Findings/Conclusions: this new theory helps to better explain water loss through transpiration and metabolic processes, since both are closely related to the water content in the mobile solution in conducting vessels.
