Background: Extension fractures are more common than flexion fractures, and were classified into three subgroups by Gartland: type I, with no displacement; type II, with moderate displacement and intact posterior cortex and type III, with complete displacement. According to many authors, the ideal treatment for type 3 supracondylar humerus fractures is closed reduction and percutaneous pinning. Methods: This study was conducted in the department of orthopaedics, Rajendra institute of medical sciences, Ranchi during the period from December 2020 to December 2022. Both male and female patients were included in the study. Implant used are K wires of various diameter ranging from 1.5 to 2 mm. Results: The results with CRPCP are better than ORIF method as far as range of motion of elbow is concerned. Baumann angle were also comparable in both the groups. Conclusions: In our study, in the ORIF group, the ROM of the elbow treated improved with time. There was improvement in the range of motion at the 6-months follow-up as compared to the 3-months follow-up.

Face recognition is a process by which the identity of a person is determined from the face images stored in a face database. Face recognition is one of the most successful applications of image analysis. In the present scenario, face recognition plays a major role in commercial and law enforcement applications, such as surveillance system, passport, security, personal information accesses, human machine interaction, etc. At present, very reliable methods of biometric personal identification exist. In face recognition, a feature vector usually represents the salient characteristics that best describe a face image. However, these characteristics vary quite substantially while looking into a face image from different directions. This chapter addresses this issue by means of image fusion and presents a comprehensive study of different image fusion techniques for face recognition. Image fusion is done between the original captured image and its true/partial diagonal images.

We report a photoactivatable o-hydroxycinnamate–gemcitabine prodrug that shows an efficient drug release with real-time monitoring, and dose- and temporally-controlled photocytotoxicity upon visible (one-photon) or NIR (two-photon) light irradiation.

The present work aims to synthesize the pH-sensitive crosslinked guar gum-g-poly(acrylic acid-co-acrylonitrile) [guar-g-(AA-co-ACN)] via microwave-assisted technique for the sustained release of thymoquinone. The synthesized material [guar-g-(AA-co-ACN)] was optimized by varying synthetic parameters viz. monomer concentration, reaction time, and microwave power to obtain the maximum yield of the crosslinked guar gum grafted product as well as maximum encapsulation of thymoquinone. The synthesized material [guar-g-poly(AA-co-ACN)] was characterized by FT-IR, SEM, XRD, NMR, zeta potential, and thermal techniques. This synthesized material was used to encapsulate thymoquinone (TQ) for effective nanotherapeutic delivery. In-vitro thymoquinone release behavior of guar-g-poly(AA-co-ACN) based nanoparticles (NpTGG) was investigated. The maximum thymoquinone release (78%) was achieved at pH 7.4 and time (6 h). The NpTGG also exhibited better antioxidant activity and hemocompatibility as compared to thymoquinone. Cytotoxicity of uar-g-(AA-co-ACN) and NpTGG was also evaluated against the human kidney VERO cell line and found to be nontoxic. Current research provides a cost-effective and green approach for the synthesis of guar-g-(AA-co-ACN) and NpTGG for sustained release of thymoquinone.

Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) is a joint ailment with multi-factorial immune-mediated degenerative pathogenesis, including genetic and environmental defects. Resistance to disease-modifying anti-rheumatic drugs (DMARDs) happens due to excessive drug efflux over time, rendering the concentration insufficient to elicit a response. Thymoquinone (TQ) is a quinone-based phenolic compound with antioxidant and anti-inflammatory activities that downregulate numerous pro-inflammatory cytokines. However, its pharmaceutical importance and therapeutic utility are underexplored due to intrinsic physicochemical characteristics such as inadequate biological stability, short half-life, low hydrophilicity, and less systemic availability. Tamanu oil-stabilised nanostructured lipid carriers (TQ-NLCs) were prepared and optimised using Box-Behnken design (BBD) with the size of 153.9 ± 0.52 nm and surface charge of -30.71 mV. The % entrapment efficiency and drug content were found to be 84.6 ± 0.50% and 14.75 ± 0.52%, respectively. Furthermore, the TQ-loaded NLCs (TQ-NLCs) assayed for skin permeation for transdermal delivery which significantly (p 0.05) increased skin enhancement ratio 14.6 times compared to the aqueous solution of TQ. Tamanu oil displayed the synergistic anti-inflammatory potential with TQ in comparison to pure TQ, as evidenced against carrageenan (CRG)-induced paw oedema model and Freund's adjuvant-induced arthritic model. The arthritic and X-ray scores significantly (p 0.05) reduced in TQ-NLCs and standard formulation-treated groups. Moreover, serum pro-inflammatory marker TNF-α and IL-6 levels were also significantly (p 0.05) reduced in TQ-NLCs gel-treated group compared to the arthritic control group.

Major active ingredient of Terminalia arjuna bark, a triterpenoid saponins -arjunolic acid was determined in fifty-one accessions of different geographical locations from seven different states i.e. Madhya Pradesh, Orissa, Uttar Pradesh, Maharashtra, Jharkhand, Uttrakhand and Andhra Pradesh of India.Arjunolic acid was extracted from bark samples with the help of microwave assisted method and quantified by High Performance Liquid Chromatography (HPLC). A significant variation in arjunolic acid content was observed in bark from different regions.The quantity of arjunolic acid varied 0.01- 0.29 μg/mg, maximum quantity was observed in Accession- UKDDLP belongs to Uttrakhand, Western Himalayan region. The eastern plateau and hill region of the state produced the lowest amount, whereas the western Himalayan regions zone of the state had higher yields. The populations with high arjunolic acid content can be utilized for mass multiplication and genetic improvement.

Toxicity due to heavy metals (HM), specifically mercury (Hg), arsenic (As), lead (Pb), and cadmium (Cd) remains a challenge to scientists till date. This review gives insights into natural antidotes for the management and prevention of HM toxicity. Various databases such as PubMed, Embase, and Science Direct were searched for available facts on natural antidotes and their commercial products against HM toxicity till date. Toxicity owing to such metals needs prevention rather than therapy. Natural antidotes, fruits and vegetables, rich in antioxidant are the answers to such toxicities. Synthetic chelators impart a major drawback of removing essential metals required for normal body function, along with the toxic one. Natural antioxidants are bestowed with scavenging and chelation properties and can be alternative for synthetic chelating agents. Natural compounds are abundantly available, economic, and have minimal side effects when compared with classical chelators. Prevention is better than cure and thus adding plentiful vegetables and fruits to our diet can combat HM toxicity-related illness. Graphical abstract.

The pandemic of coronavirus infection 2019 (COVID-19) due to the serious respiratory condition created by the coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) presents a challenge to recognize effective strategies for management and treatment. In general, COVID-19 is an acute disease that can also be fatal, with an ongoing 10.2% case morbidity rate. Extreme illness may bring about death because of enormous alveolar damage and hemorrhage along with progressive respiratory failure. The rapidly expanding information with respect to SARS-CoV-2 research suggests a substantial number of potential drug targets. The most encouraging treatment to date is suggested to be with the help of remdesivir, hydroxychloroquine, and many such repurposed drugs. Remdesivir has a strong in vitro activity for SARS-CoV-2, yet it is not the drug of choice as affirmed by the US Food and Drug Administration and presently is being tried in progressing randomized preliminaries. The COVID-19 pandemic has been the worst worldwide general health emergency of this age and, possibly, since the pandemic influenza outbreak of 1918. The speed and volume of clinical preliminaries propelled to examine potential treatments for COVID-19 feature both the need and capacity to create abundant evidence even in the center of a pandemic. No treatments have been demonstrated as accurate and dependable to date. This review presents a concise precise of the targets and broad treatment strategies for the benefit of researchers.

Some breast cancers are caused by hormonal imbalances, such as estrogen and progesterone. These hormones play a function in directing the growth of cancer cells. The hormone receptors in hormone receptor-positive breast cancer lead breast cells to proliferate out of control. Cancer therapy such as hormonal, targeted, radiation is still unsatisfactory because of these challenges namely multiple drug resistance (MDR), off-targeting, severe adverse effects. A novel aromatase inhibitor exemestane (Exe) exhibits promising therapy in breast cancer. This study aims to develop and optimize Exe-loaded lipid nanocapsules (LNCs) by using DSPC, PF68 and olive oil as lipid, surfactant and oil phase, respectively and to characterize the same. The prepared nanocapsules were investigated via in vitro cell culture and in vivo animal models. The LNCs exhibited cytotoxicity in MCF-7 cell lines and enhanced anti-cancer activity and reduced cardiotoxicity in DMBA-induced animal model when compared to the drug. Additionally, in vivo pharmacokinetics revealed a 4.2-fold increased oral bioavailability when compared with Exe suspension. This study demonstrated that oral administration of Exe-loaded LNCs holds promise for the antiestrogenic activity of exemestane in breast cancer.

The current anticancer therapies are limited by their lack of controlled spatiotemporal release at the target site of action. We report a novel drug delivery platform that provides on-demand, real-time, organelle-specific drug release and monitoring upon photoactivation. The system is comprised of a model anticancer drug doxorubicin, an alkyltriphenylphosphonium moiety to target mitochondria in cancer cells, and a hydroxycinnamate photoactivatable linker that is covalently attached to the drug and mitochondria-targeting moieties such that it can be phototriggered by either UV (one-photon) or NIR (two-photon) light to form a fluorescent coumarin product and facilitate the release of drug payload. The extent of drug release is quantified by the fluorescence intensity of the coumarin formed. Further, the photoactivatable prodrug accumulates in the mitochondria and shows light-triggered temporally controlled cell death. In the future, our platform can be tuned for any biological application of interest, offering immense value in biomedicine.

The present investigation deals with solubility enhancement of Etodolac (ETD) through co-crystals technique utilizing various co-formers and to evaluate their therapeutic efficacy against carrageenan-induced inflammation. Co-formers citric acid anhydrous and tartaric acid were selected to formulate ETD co-crystals to improve solubility and dissolution employing neat grinding technique. The prepared co-crystals were characterized for solubility enhancement, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), powder X-ray diffraction (PXRD), in vitro dissolution and stability studies. The co-crystals were further investigated for in vivo studies to assess their potential to cure paw edema in mice. The outcome of the study illustrated significantly improved solubility and dissolution of ETD up to 6.15 folds using citric acid. Approximately a two-fold reduction in nitric oxide and cytokines levels was observed with optimized formulation. Also, substantial inhibition of inflammation was observed in paw edema induced animals. In sight of the above results the co-crystal approach could be an alternative for enhanced therapeutic potential.

PEI is the leading international professional network for polar educators and scientists, formed in 2012 as an outcome of the Education and Outreach activities of the IPY, connecting polar education, research and the global community. The organisation encourages collaboration, networking and dialogue between teachers and researchers developing science communication and engagement tools and methodologies, integrating and evaluating learning and engagement at all stages of the research process. Three opportunities to be involved in this work are highlighted. International CollaborationPEI, collaborating with IASC, SCAR and APECS is working with researchers and polar educators to review and update Polar Science and Global Change - An International Resource for Education and Outreach (IPY2010), a comprehensive book of teaching and communication resources including scientific information, research material, methods and hands-on activities to bring polar research into classrooms and the community. Professional Networking in Bits and BytesPEI members have been connecting, collaborating, and creating in an online environment since 2012. PEI members also get together at the PEI biennial international workshop to share and evaluate current polar education, outreach and science communication initiatives with international peers and experts. In preparation for the 2022 PEI Iceland workshop, members will present a programme of online professional development experiences for polar educators, science communicators and community members beginning in Spring 2021, highlighting strengths and challenges of engaging audiences . These will be shared freely and evaluated through discussion. Global DialoguePEI welcomes participation in a global cafe, connecting interdisciplinary and diverse communities, encouraging ongoing dialogue about effective polar education and action.There are many networks and partnerships who engage in polar education, science communication, community learning and research but there are few opportunities to collect together this experience and expertise on a global scale. The first global conversation - Connecting Education, Indigenous Knowledge & Arctic Research, will contribute material for a report to the Arctic Science Ministerial. It Aims to connect dialogues about polar education and outreach, particularly concerning the Arctic, which is changing faster than any other environment on the planet.This is a unique opportunity for science, education and community partners with an interest in the Arctic to weave networks, lead dialogue and participate in a global conversation.

Nanoparticles (NPs) as nanocarriers have emerged as novel and promising theranostic agents. The term theranostics revealed the properties of NPs capable of diagnosing the disease at an early stage and/or treating the disease. Such NPs are usually developed employing a surface engineering approach. The theranostic agents comprise NPs loaded with a drug/diagnostic agent that delivers it precisely to the target site. Theranostics is a field with promising results in enhancing therapeutic efficacy facilitated through higher payload at the targeted tissue, reduced dose, and dose-dependent side effects. However, controversies in terms of toxicity and size-dependent properties have often surfaced for NPs. Thus, a stringent in-vitro and in-vivo evaluation is required to develop safe and non-toxic NPs as theranostic agents. The review also focuses on the various entry points of NPs in the human system and their outcomes, including toxicity. It elaborates the evaluation criteria to ensure the safe use of NPs for diagnostic and therapeutic purposes.

Among various natural biopolymers, gelatin has gained attention of scientists and researchers in various biomedical fields. Gelatin as a biopolymer is bestowed with numerous advantages, such as ease of availability from the natural resources, excellent stability, biocompatibility, biodegradability, facile fabrication, ability to modify drug release behavior, and capacity to restrain drug degradation by arresting their release before reaching to the target sites. These benefits eventually make gelatin a potential biomaterial for a variety of biomedical applications including drug delivery, biocompatibility, biodegradability, etc. In recent years, numerous gelatin-based nanomaterials in the form of nanoparticles, nanofibers, nanocomplexes, nanocomposites, etc., have been fabricated and their efficacy to deliver various therapeutic agents like small-molecule drugs, proteins and peptides, genes, etc., has been evaluated. These nanoscaffolds have also been used for tissue regeneration, toxicity minimization, and antimicrobial applications. This chapter describes several gelatin-based nanomaterials specifically developed for drug delivery and biomedical applications.

This review chapter is an overview of the published articles, thesis and report on pollution by microplastics in the Svalbard area. This work was supported by the Norwegian Polar Institute, Tromsø and Svalbard Integrated Arctic Earth Observing System - Knowledge Centre (SIOS-KC). The findings of microplastics in sea ice, snow, water, sediment, and biota samples in Svalbard show that the archipelago is not isolated from pollution generated in other parts of the world and plastic pollution in the region must be monitored

Breast cancer is one of the epidemic threats among different cancers in women and technologically advanced approaches have been attempted to overcome breast cancer. Despite conventional therapies being effective, there are several shortcomings, such as undesirable side effects, problems in the bioavailability of some drugs, due to which several advancements have been endeavored for curing breast cancer. Nano-based advanced drug delivery systems possess tumor targeting ability, reduced side effects, high bioavailability, and controlled release of a drug, and thus, became a research hotspot for breast cancer too. Apart from the nano-based delivery system, micro-based delivery system, transdermal patches, microneedles have similarly been well-thought-out strategies. To enhance targeting, some tactics such as surface ligand attachment and use of stimuli-responsive materials have shown promises. This chapter discusses various such advanced delivery systems and briefs about various strategies to deliver anti-breast cancer drugs specifically to breast cancer.

Polar Educators International (PEI) is an outcome of the 4th International Polar Year. During this period (2001 – 2009) educators firstly were highly involved in a scientific initiative and a first bridge between scientists and educators was built. Since then PEI grew rapidly and nowadays has almost 200 members coming from all over the world.The mission of PEI is to highlight and share the global relevance of the Polar Regions with the broader community. Therefore a vital network of educators and researchers are strongly cooperating together with relevant polar organizations such as IASC or SCAR. Thus PEI is able to provide up-to-date educational material for schools, workshop for teachers and many more.
