We present an analytical model to identify thin discs in galaxies, and apply this model to a sample of SDSS MaNGA galaxies. This model fits the velocity and velocity dispersion fields of galaxies with regular kinematics. By introducing two parameters $\zeta$ related to the comparison of the model's asymmetric drift correction to the observed gas kinematics and $\eta$ related to the dominant component of a galaxy, we classify the galaxies in the sample as "disc-dominated", "non-disc-dominated", or "disc-free" indicating galaxies with a dominating thin disc, a non-dominating thin disc, or no thin disc detection with our method, respectively. The dynamical mass resulting from our model correlates with stellar mass, and we investigate discrepancies by including gas mass and variation of the initial mass function. As expected, most spiral galaxies in the sample are disc-dominated, while ellipticals are predominantly disc-free. Lenticular galaxies show a dichotomy in their kinematic classification, which is related to their different star formation rates and gas fractions. We propose two possible scenarios to explain these results. In the first scenario, disc-free lenticulars formed in more violent processes than disc-dominated ones, while in the second scenario, the quenching processes in lenticulars lead to a change in their kinematic structures as disc-dominated lenticulars evolve to disc-free ones., Comment: 13 pages, 16 figures, accepted by MNRAS

We derive ages, metallicities, and individual element abundances of early- and late-type galaxies (ETGs and LTGs) out to 1.5 R$_e$. We study a large sample of 1900 galaxies spanning $8.6 - 11.3 \log M/M_{\odot}$ in stellar mass, through key absorption features in stacked spectra from the SDSS-IV/MaNGA survey. We use mock galaxy spectra with extended star formation histories to validate our method for LTGs and use corrections to convert the derived ages into luminosity- and mass-weighted quantities. We find flat age and negative metallicity gradients for ETGs and negative age and negative metallicity gradients for LTGs. Age gradients in LTGs steepen with increasing galaxy mass, from $-0.05\pm0.11~\log$ Gyr/R$_e$ for the lowest mass galaxies to $-0.82\pm0.08~\log$ Gyr/R$_e$ for the highest mass ones. This strong gradient-mass relation has a slope of $-0.70\pm0.18$. Comparing local age and metallicity gradients with the velocity dispersion $\sigma$ within galaxies against the global relation with $\sigma$ shows that internal processes regulate metallicity in ETGs but not age, and vice versa for LTGs. We further find that metallicity gradients with respect to local $\sigma$ show a much stronger dependence on galaxy mass than radial metallicity gradients. Both galaxy types display flat [C/Fe] and [Mg/Fe], and negative [Na/Fe] gradients, whereas only LTGs display gradients in [Ca/Fe] and [Ti/Fe]. ETGs have increasingly steep [Na/Fe] gradients with local $\sigma$ reaching $6.50\pm0.78$ dex/$\log$ km/s for the highest masses. We analyze spatially resolved and co-added SDSS-IV MaNGA spectra with signal-to-noise ~100 from 2200 passive central galaxies (z~0.05) to understand how central galaxy assembly depends on stellar mass (M*) and halo mass (Mh). We control for systematic errors in Mh by employing a new group catalog from Tinker (2020a,b) and the widely-used Yang et al. (2007) catalog. At fixed M*, the strength of several stellar absorption features varies systematically with Mh. Completely model-free, this is one of the first indications that the stellar populations of centrals with identical M* are affected by the properties of their host halos. To interpret these variations, we applied full spectral fitting with the code alf. At fixed M*, centrals in more massive halos are older, show lower [Fe/H], and have higher [Mg/Fe] with 3.5 sigma confidence. We conclude that halos not only dictate how much M* galaxies assemble, but also modulate their chemical enrichment histories. Turning to our analysis at fixed Mh, high-M* centrals are older, show lower [Fe/H], and have higher [Mg/Fe] for Mh>10^{12}Msun/h with confidence > 4 sigma. While massive passive galaxies are thought to form early and rapidly, our results are among the first to distinguish these trends at fixed Mh. They suggest that high-M* centrals experienced unique early formation histories, either through enhanced collapse and gas fueling, or because their halos were early-forming and highly concentrated, a possible signal of galaxy assembly bias., Accepted for publication in ApJ. 28 pages and 12 figures

The effect of active galactic nuclei (AGN) feedback on the host galaxy, and its role in quenching or enhancing star-formation, is still uncertain due to the fact that usual star-formation rate (SFR) indicators -- emission-line luminosities based on the assumption of photoionisation by young stars -- cannot be used for active galaxies as the ionising source is the AGN. We thus investigate the use of SFR derived from the stellar population and its relation with that derived from the gas for a sample of 170 AGN hosts and a matched control sample of 291 galaxies. We compare the values of SFR densities obtained via the Ha emission line (SFRg) for regions ionised by hot stars according to diagnostic diagrams with those obtained from stellar population synthesis (SFRstars) over the last 1 to 100~Myr. We find that the SFRstars over the last 20~Myrs closely reproduces the SFRg, although a better match is obtained via the transformation: log(SFRstars) = (0.872+/-0.004) log(SFRg) -(0.075+/-0.006), which is valid for both AGN hosts and non-active galaxies. We also compare the reddening obtained via the gas Ha/Hb ratio with that derived via the full spectral fitting in the stellar population synthesis. We find that the ratio between the gas and stellar extinction is in the range 2.64 < A_Vgas/A_Vstar} < 2.85, in approximate agreement with previous results from the literature, obtained for smaller samples. We interpret the difference as being due to the fact that the reddening of the stars is dominated by that affecting the less obscured underlying older population, while the reddening of the gas is larger as it is associated to a younger stellar population buried deeper in the dust., 13 pages, accepted for publication in MNRAS

Bars are common in low-redshift disk galaxies, and hence quantifying their influence on their host is of importance to the field of galaxy evolution. We determine the stellar populations and star formation histories of 245 barred galaxies from the MaNGA galaxy survey, and compare them to a mass- and morphology-matched comparison sample of unbarred galaxies. At fixed stellar mass and morphology, barred galaxies are optically redder than their unbarred counterparts. From stellar population analysis using the full spectral fitting code Starlight, we attribute this difference to both older and more metal-rich stellar populations. Dust attenuation however, is lower in the barred sample. The star formation histories of barred galaxies peak earlier than their non-barred counterparts, and the galaxies build up their mass at earlier times. We can detect no significant differences in the local environment of barred and un-barred galaxies in this sample, but find that the HI gas mass fraction is significantly lower in high-mass ($\rm{M}_{\star} > 10^{10}~\rm{M}_{\odot}$) barred galaxies than their non-barred counterparts. We speculate on the mechanisms that have allowed barred galaxies to be older, more metal-rich and more gas-poor today, including the efficient redistribution of galactic fountain byproducts, and a runaway bar formation scenario in gas-poor disks. While it is not possible to fully determine the effect of the bar on galaxy quenching, we conclude that the presence of a bar and the early cessation of star formation within a galaxy are intimately linked., 11 pages, 7 figures. We present an orbit-based method of combining stellar and cold gas kinematics to constrain the dark matter profile of early-type galaxies. We apply this method to early-type galaxy NGC 2974, using Pan-STARRS imaging and SAURON stellar kinematics to model the stellar orbits, and introducing HI kinematics from VLA observation as a tracer of the gravitational potential. The introduction of the cold gas kinematics shows a significant effect on the confidence limits of especially the dark halo properties: we exclude more than $95\%$ of models within the $1-\sigma$ confidence level of Schwarzschild modelling with only stellar kinematics, and reduce the relative uncertainty of the dark matter fraction significantly to $10\%$ within $5 R_\mathrm{e}$. Adopting a generalized-NFW dark matter profile, we measure a shallow cuspy inner slope of $0.6^{+0.2}_{-0.3}$ when including the cold gas kinematics in our model. Bars may induce morphological features, such as rings, through their resonances. Previous studies suggested that the presence of 'dark-gaps', or regions of a galaxy where the difference between the surface brightness along the bar major axis and along the bar minor axis are maximal, can be attributed to the location of bar corotation. Here, using GALAKOS, a high-resolution N-body simulation of a barred galaxy, we test this photometric method's ability to identify the bar corotation resonance. Contrary to previous work, our results indicate that 'dark-gaps' are a clear sign of the location of the 4:1 ultra-harmonic resonance instead of bar corotation. Measurements of the bar corotation can indirectly be inferred using kinematic information, e.g., by measuring the shape of the rotation curve. We demonstrate our concept on a sample of 578 face-on barred galaxies with both imaging and integral field observations and find the sample likely consists primarily of fast bars., 16 pages, 14 figures, Accepted for publication in ApJ

Abdurro’uf et al., This paper documents the seventeenth data release (DR17) from the Sloan Digital Sky Surveys; the fifth and final release from the fourth phase (SDSS-IV). DR17 contains the complete release of the Mapping Nearby Galaxies at Apache Point Observatory (MaNGA) survey, which reached its goal of surveying over 10,000 nearby galaxies. The complete release of the MaNGA Stellar Library accompanies this data, providing observations of almost 30,000 stars through the MaNGA instrument during bright time. DR17 also contains the complete release of the Apache Point Observatory Galactic Evolution Experiment 2 survey that publicly releases infrared spectra of over 650,000 stars. The main sample from the Extended Baryon Oscillation Spectroscopic Survey (eBOSS), as well as the subsurvey Time Domain Spectroscopic Survey data were fully released in DR16. New single-fiber optical spectroscopy released in DR17 is from the SPectroscipic IDentification of ERosita Survey subsurvey and the eBOSS-RM program. Along with the primary data sets, DR17 includes 25 new or updated value-added catalogs. This paper concludes the release of SDSS-IV survey data. The distribution of stellar metallicities within and across galaxies is an excellent relic of the chemical evolution across cosmic time. We present a detailed analysis of spatially resolved stellar populations based on $>2.6$ million spatial bins from 7439 nearby galaxies in the SDSS-IV MaNGA survey. To account for accurate inclination corrections, we derive an equation for morphology dependent determination of galaxy inclinations. Our study goes beyond the well-known global mass-metallicity relation and radial metallicity gradients by providing a statistically sound exploration of local relations between stellar metallicity $[Z/H]$, stellar surface mass density $\Sigma_\star$ and galactocentric distance in the global mass-morphology plane. We find a significant resolved mass density-metallicity relation $\rm r\Sigma_\star ZR$ for galaxies of all types and masses above $10^{9.8}\,\mathrm{M_\odot}$. Different radial distances make an important contribution to the spread of the relation. Particularly, in low and intermediate mass galaxies, we find that at fixed $\Sigma_\star$ metallicity increases with radius independently of morphology. For high masses, this radial dependence is only observed in high $\Sigma_\star$ regions of spiral galaxies. This result calls for a driver of metallicity, in addition to $\Sigma_\star$ that promotes chemical enrichment in the outer parts of galaxies more strongly than in the inner parts. By fitting stellar populations to the fourth generation of the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS-IV) Mapping Nearby Galaxies at Apache Point Observatory (MaNGA) survey observations of ∼7000 suitably weighted individual galaxies, we reconstruct the star formation history of the Universe, which we find to be in reasonable agreement with previous studies. Dividing the galaxies by their present-day stellar mass, we demonstrate the downsizing phenomenon, whereby the more massive galaxies hosted the most star formation at earlier times. Further dividing the galaxy sample by colour and morphology, we find that a galaxy's present-day colour tells us more about its historical contribution to the cosmic star formation history than its current morphology. We show that downsizing effects are greatest among galaxies currently in the blue cloud, but that the level of downsizing in galaxies of different morphologies depends quite sensitively on the morphological classification used, due largely to the difficulty in classifying the smaller low-mass galaxies from their ground-based images. Nevertheless, we find agreement that among galaxies with stellar masses M∗ > 6× 109, M⊙, downsizing is most significant in spirals. However, there are complicating factors. For example, for more massive galaxies, we find that colour and morphology are predictors of the past star formation over a longer time-scale than in less massive systems. Presumably this effect is reflecting the longer period of evolution required to alter these larger galaxies' physical properties, but shows that conclusions based on any single property do not tell the full story., The authors also thank S. Gas interior to the bar of the Milky Way has recently been shown as the closest example of a Low Ionization (Nuclear) Emission Region--LI(N)ER--in the universe. To better understand the nature of this gas, a sample of face-on galaxies with integral field spectroscopy are used to study the ionized gas conditions of 240 barred and 250 nonbarred galaxies, focusing on those that are most similar to the Milky Way. Strong optical line emission of $[NII]$ $\lambda 6584$, H$\alpha$, $[OIII]$ $\lambda 5007$, and H$\beta$ are used to diagnose the dominant ionization mechanisms of gas across galaxies and the Galaxy via Baldwin-Phillips-Terlevich (BPT) Diagrams. Barred galaxies show a strong suppression of star formation and an increase in composite and LI(N)ER like spectra in their inner regions when compared with similar nonbarred counterparts. This effect is lessened in galaxies of very low ($\log_{10}(M_\star/M_\odot) \lesssim 10.4$) or very high ($\log_{10}(M_\star/M_\odot) \gtrsim 11.1$) total stellar mass. Dust attenuation in star-forming spiral galaxies affects stars and gas in different ways due to local variations in dust geometry. We present spatially resolved measurements of dust attenuation for a sample of 232 such star-forming spiral galaxies, derived from spectra acquired by the SDSS-IV MaNGA survey. The dust attenuation affecting the stellar populations of these galaxies (obtained using full spectrum stellar population fitting methods) is compared with the dust attenuation in the gas (derived from the Balmer decrement). Both of these attenuation measures increase for local regions of galaxies with higher star formation rates; the dust attenuation affecting the stellar populations increases more so than the dust attenuation in the gas, causing the ratio of the dust attenuation affecting the stellar populations to the dust attenuation in the gas to decrease for local regions of galaxies with higher star formation rate densities. No systematic difference is discernible in any of these dust attenuation quantities between the spiral arm and inter-arm regions of the galaxies. While both the dust attenuation in the gas and the dust attenuation affecting the stellar populations decrease with galactocentric radius, the ratio of the two quantities does not vary with radius. This ratio does, however, decrease systematically as the stellar mass of the galaxy increases. Analysis of the radial profiles of the two dust attenuation measures suggests that there is a disproportionately high concentration of birth clouds (incorporating gas, young stars and clumpy dust) nearer to the centres of star-forming spiral galaxies., Comment: 17 pages, 8 figures, accepted for publication in Monthly Notices of the Royal Astronomical Society

It remains an open question as to how long ago the morphology that we see in a present-day galaxy was typically imprinted. Studies of galaxy populations at different redshifts reveal that the balance of morphologies has changed over time, but such snapshots cannot uncover the typical timescales over which individual galaxies undergo morphological transformation, nor which are the progenitors of today's galaxies of different types. However, these studies also show a strong link between morphology and star-formation rate over a large range in redshift, which offers an alternative probe of morphological transformation. We therefore derive the evolution in star-formation rate and stellar mass of a sample of 4342 galaxies in the SDSS-IV MaNGA survey through a stellar population "fossil record" approach, and show that the average evolution of the population shows good agreement with known behaviour from previous studies. Although the correlation between a galaxy's contemporaneous morphology and star-formation rate is strong over a large range of lookback times, we find that a galaxy's present-day morphology only correlates with its relatively recent (~2 Gyr) star-formation history. We therefore find strong evidence that morphological transitions to galaxies' current appearance occurred on timescales as short as a few billion years., Comment: 5 pages and 2 animated figures. Gas-phase abundances and abundance gradients provide much information on past stellar generations, and are powerful probes of how galaxies evolve. Gas abundance gradients in galaxies have been studied as functions of galaxies' mass and size individually, but have largely not been considered across the galaxy mass--size plane. Thus, we investigate gas-phase abundance gradients across this plane, using a sample of over 1000 galaxies selected from the MApping Nearby Galaxies at APO (MaNGA) spectroscopic survey. We find that gradients vary systematically such that above $10^{10}M_{\odot}$, smaller galaxies display flatter gradients than larger galaxies at a given stellar mass. This mass--size behaviour cannot be explained by instrumental effects, nor is it simply a reflection of known trends between gradients and morphology. We explore multiple possibilities for a physical origin for this pattern, though further work is needed to establish a firm physical interpretation., Comment: 7 pages, 4 figures. Accepted by MNRAS

Integrated light spectroscopy from galaxies can be used to study the stellar populations that cannot be resolved into individual stars. This analysis relies on stellar population synthesis (SPS) techniques to study the formation history and structure of galaxies. However, the spectral templates available for SPS are limited, especially in the near-infrared. We present A-LIST (APOGEE Library of Infrared SSP Templates), a new set of high-resolution, near-IR SSP spectral templates spanning a wide range of ages (2-12 Gyr), metallicities ($\rm -2.2 < [M/H] < +0.4$) and $��$ abundances ($\rm -0.2 < [��/M] < +0.4$). This set of SSP templates is the highest resolution ($R\sim22500$) available in the near infrared, and the first such based on an empirical stellar library. Our models are generated using spectra of $\sim$300,000 stars spread across the Milky Way, with a wide range of metallicities and abundances, from the APOGEE survey. We show that our model spectra provide accurate fits to M31 globular cluster spectra taken with APOGEE, with best-fit metallicities agreeing with those of previous estimates to within $\sim$0.1 dex. We also compare these model spectra to lower-resolution E-MILES models and demonstrate that we recover the ages of these models to within $\sim$1.5 Gyr. The Milky Way provides an ideal laboratory to test our understanding of galaxy evolution, owing to our ability to observe our Galaxy over fine scales. However, connecting the Galaxy to the wider galaxy population remains difficult, due to the challenges posed by our internal perspective and to the different observational techniques employed. Here, we present a sample of galaxies identified as Milky Way Analogs (MWAs) on the basis of their stellar masses and bulge-to-total ratios, observed as part of the Mapping Nearby Galaxies at Apache Point Observatory (MaNGA) survey. We analyse the galaxies in terms of their stellar kinematics and populations as well as their ionised gas contents. We find our sample to contain generally young stellar populations in their outskirts. However, we find a wide range of stellar ages in their central regions, and we detect central AGN-like or composite-like activity in roughly half of the sample galaxies, with the other half consisting of galaxies with central star-forming emission or emission consistent with old stars. We measure gradients in gas metallicity and stellar metallicity that are generally flatter in physical units than those measured for the Milky Way; however, we find far better agreement with the Milky Way when scaling gradients by galaxies' disc scale lengths. From this, we argue much of the discrepancy in metallicity gradients to be due to the relative compactness of the Milky Way, with differences in observing perspective also likely to be a factor., 33 pages, 28 figures. Star formation rate density, ΣSFR, has shown a remarkable correlation with both components of the baryonic mass kiloparsec scales (i.e., the stellar mass density and molecular gas mass density, Σ* and Σmol, respectively) for galaxies in the nearby universe. In this study, we propose an empirical relation between ΣSFR and the baryonic mass surface density (Σb = Σmol,Av + Σ*, where Σmol,Av is the molecular gas derived from the optical extinction, A V ) at kiloparsec scales using the spatially resolved properties of the MaNGA survey, the largest sample of galaxies observed via integral field spectroscopy (∼8400 objects). We find that ΣSFR tightly correlates with Σb. Furthermore, we derive an empirical relation between ΣSFR and a second-degree polynomial of Σb, yielding a one-to-one relation between these two observables. Both Σb and its polynomial form show a stronger correlation and smaller scatter with respect to ΣSFR than the relations derived using the individual components of Σb. Our results suggest that these three parameters are indeed physically correlated, suggesting a scenario in which the two components of the baryonic mass regulate the star formation activity at kiloparsec scales.

We present a new method to combine cold gas kinematics with the stellar kinematics modelled with the Schwarzschild orbit-superposition technique, and its application to the lenticular galaxy NGC 2974. The combination of stellar and cold gas kinematics significantly improves the constraints on the measured dark matter profile: assuming a generalised NFW halo profile, we find a cuspy inner halo slope for NGC 2974.

We observed twelve nearby HI -detected early-type galaxies (ETGs) of stellar mass $\sim 10^{10}M\odot \leq M_* \leq \sim 10^{11}M\odot$ with the Mitchell Integral-Field Spectrograph, reaching approximately three half-light radii in most cases. We extracted line-of-sight velocity distributions for the stellar and gaseous components. We find little evidence of transitions in the stellar kinematics of the galaxies in our sample beyond the central effective radius, with centrally fast-rotating galaxies remaining fast-rotating and centrally slow-rotating galaxies likewise remaining slow-rotating. This is consistent with these galaxies having not experienced late dry major mergers; however, several of our objects have ionised gas that is misaligned with respect to their stars, suggesting some kind of past interaction. We extract Lick index measurements of the commonly-used H$\beta$, Fe5015, Mg\, b, Fe5270 and Fe5335 absorption features, and we find most galaxies to have flat H$\beta$ gradients and negative Mg, b gradients. We measure gradients of age, metallicity and abundance ratio for our galaxies using spectral fitting, and for the majority of our galaxies find negative age and metallicity gradients. We also find the stellar mass-to-light ratios to decrease with radius for most of the galaxies in our sample. Our results are consistent with a view in which intermediate-mass ETGs experience mostly quiet evolutionary histories, but in which many have experienced some kind of gaseous interaction in recent times., Comment: 26 pages, 29 figures. 4 supplementary figures to be made available online

We observed the lenticular galaxy NGC 3998 with the Mitchell Integral-Field Spectrograph and extracted line-of-sight velocity distributions out to 3 half-light radii. We constructed collisionless orbit models in order to constrain NGC 3998's dark and visible structure, using kinematics from both the Mitchell and SAURON instruments. We find NGC 3998 to be almost axisymmetric, seen nearly face on with a flattened intrinsic shape - i.e., a face-on fast-rotator. We find an I-band mass-to-light ratio of $4.7_{-0.45}^{+0.32}$ in good agreement with previous spectral fitting results for this galaxy. Our best-fit orbit model shows a both a bulge and a disc component, with a non-negligible counter-rotating component also evident. Much progress has been made in recent years towards understanding how early-type galaxies (ETGs) form and evolve. SAURON (Bacon et al. 2001) integral-field spectroscopy from the ATLAS3D survey (Cappellari et al. 2011) has suggested that less massive ETGs are linked directly to spirals, whereas the most massive objects appear to form from a series of merging and accretion events (Cappellari et al. 2013). However, the ATLAS3D data typically only extends to about one half-light radius (or effective radius, Re), making it unclear if this picture is truly complete.

Our Milky Way provides a unique test case for galaxy evolution models, thanks to our privileged position within the Milky Way's disc. This position also complicates comparisons between the Milky Way and external galaxies, due to our inability to observe the Milky Way from an external point of view. Milky Way analog galaxies offer us a chance to bridge this divide by providing the external perspective that we otherwise lack. However, over-precise definitions of "analog" yield little-to-no galaxies, so it is vital to understand which selection criteria produce the most meaningful analog samples. To address this, we compare the properties of complementary samples of Milky Way analogs selected using different criteria. We find the Milky Way to be within 1$\sigma$ of its analogs in terms of star-formation rate and bulge-to-total ratio in most cases, but we find larger offsets between the Milky Way and its analogs in terms of disc scale length; this suggests that scale length must be included in analog selections in addition to other criteria if the most accurate analogs are to be selected. We also apply our methodology to the neighbouring Andromeda galaxy. We find analogs selected on the basis of strong morphological features to display much higher star-formation rates than Andromeda, and we also find analogs selected on Andromeda's star-formation rate to over-predict Andromeda's bulge extent. This suggests both structure and star-formation rate should be considered when selecting the most stringent Andromeda analogs., Comment: 13 pages, 11 figures. Accepted by MNRAS
