Abstract

Correction: Chemical Senses, Volume 46, 2021, bjab050, https://doi.org/10.1093/chemse/bjab050 Published: 08 December 2021 Recent anecdotal and scientific reports have provided evidence of a link between COVID-19 and chemosensory impairments, such as anosmia. However, these reports have downplayed or failed to distinguish potential effects on taste, ignored chemesthesis, and generally lacked quantitative measurements. Here, we report the development, implementation, and initial results of a multilingual, international questionnaire to assess self-reported quantity and quality of perception in 3 distinct chemosensory modalities (smell, taste, and chemesthesis) before and during COVID-19. In the first 11 days after questionnaire launch, 4039 participants (2913 women, 1118 men, and 8 others, aged 19-79) reported a COVID-19 diagnosis either via laboratory tests or clinical assessment. Importantly, smell, taste, and chemesthetic function were each significantly reduced compared to their status before the disease. Difference scores (maximum possible change +/- 100) revealed a mean reduction of smell (-79.7 +/- 28.7, mean +/- standard deviation), taste (-69.0 +/- 32.6), and chemesthetic (-37.3 +/- 36.2) function during COVID-19. Qualitative changes in olfactory ability (parosmia and phantosmia) were relatively rare and correlated with smell loss. Importantly, perceived nasal obstruction did not account for smell loss. Furthermore, chemosensory impairments were similar between participants in the laboratory test and clinical assessment groups. These results show that COVID-19-associated chemosensory impairment is not limited to smell but also affects taste and chemesthesis.The multimodal impact of COVID-19 and the lack of perceived nasal obstruction suggest that severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus strain 2 (SARS-CoV-2) infection may disrupt sensory-neural mechanisms.

Abstract

Meeting Abstract Y3 in proceedings " XXVIIth Annual Meeting of the European Chemoreception Research Organization"; International audience; Human newborns do not have a fixed set of olfactory likes or dislikes because they acquire them mainly by evaluative conditioning. However, odorants elicit differential preferential responses, even without prior experience. Odorant stimuli generally convey olfaction per se as well as some degree of intranasal chemesthesis. This tactile confound of the odour sensation mediated by the trigeminal system, whose stimulation may result into neurological airway protection processes, could be a potential predictor of spontaneous preferential responsiveness to unknown odorants. In our study we explored if unfamiliar odorants with contrasted trigeminal intensity led to stronger defensive response (heart rate (HR) acceleration) indicative of arousal magnitude and perceived unpleasantness in newborns. To fifty of them (two-to-three-days old) we administered three randomized order odorants; two of them unfamiliar with different trigeminal pungency (one strong, one weak) and one blank. Repeated-measures ANOVA revealed that the newborns’ HR exhibited a significant interaction of the odorant with the course of HR variation in the first trial. Further, repeated planned contrasts showed a significant difference between odorants across repeated measures circa half a minute after the presentation. However, paired samples t-tests have shown that the significant difference was for the blank stimulus only, the strong trigeminal odorants induced a slight HR increase compared to which the weak ones induced a stronger HR increase; blank stimuli a marked drop. Further, no such effects were found in the two, consequent trials. At this moment, our findings do not support asymmetric processing of odours with different trigeminal component at the HR level. However, we do provide further evidence that newborns in irregular sleep respond differentially to very low dilutions of odorants.

Abstract

Olfactory and gustatory functions exhibit over the course of normal aging a marked decline that often goes unnoticed. This decline can be assessed with psychophysical methods of olfactory and gustatory testing. Investigations of the decrease in chemosensory dysfunction during normal aging have significance for prediction of cognitive decline, diagnosis of neurodegenerative diseases, but also with regard to quality of life. The consequences for the quality of life include mainly occurrence of depression, decline of self-assessed quality of life in general and assessments of general health, mental health, physical and social functioning in particular, but also changes in dietary habits and an increased risk of household accidents, with potential implications for health status. The aim of this review is to introduce methods of assessment of smell and taste functions, the nature of their decline in normally aging persons, associations with cognitive decline and emotional status, consequences for quality of life and ways of coping with olfactory and gustatory changes. Abstract

Hedonic ratings of odors and olfactory preferences are influenced by a number of modulating factors, such as prior experience and knowledge about an odor's identity. The present study addresses the relationship between knowledge about an odor's identity due to prior experience, assessed by means of a test of cued odor identification, and odor pleasantness ratings in children who exhibit ongoing olfactory learning. Ninety-one children aged 8-11 years rated the pleasantness of odors in the Sniffin' Sticks test and, subsequently, took the odor identification test. A positive association between odor identification and pleasantness was found for two unpleasant food odors (garlic and fish): higher pleasantness ratings were exhibited by those participants who correctly identified these odors compared to those who failed to correctly identify them. However, we did not find a similar effect for any of the more pleasant odors. The results of this study suggest that pleasantness ratings of some odors may be modulated by the knowledge of their identity due to prior experience and that this relationship might be more evident in unpleasant odors. 8. Do differences in Toxoplasma prevalence influence global variation in secondary sex ratio? Preliminary ecological regression study.

Abstract

Sex of the fetus is genetically determined such that an equal number of sons and daughters are born in large populations. However, the ratio of female to male births across human populations varies significantly. Many factors have been implicated in this. The theory that natural selection should favour female offspring under suboptimal environmental conditions implies that pathogens may affect secondary sex ratio (ratio of male to female births). Using regression models containing 13 potential confounding factors, we have found that variation of the secondary sex ratio can be predicted by seroprevalence of Toxoplasma across 94 populations distributed across African, American, Asian and European continents. Toxoplasma seroprevalence was the third strongest predictor of secondary sex ratio, β = -0.097, P < 0.01, after son preference, β = 0.261, P < 0.05, and fertility, β = -0.145, P < 0.001. Our preliminary results suggest that Toxoplasma gondii infection could be one of the most important environmental factors influencing the global variation of offspring sex ratio in humans. The effect of latent toxoplasmosis on public health could be much more serious than it is usually supposed to be. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
