1. Holistic Features For Real-Time Crowd Behaviour Anomaly Detection

Abstract

This paper presents a new approach to crowd behaviour anomaly detection that uses a set of efficiently computed, easily interpretable, scene-level holistic features. This low-dimensional descriptor combines two features from the literature: crowd collectiveness [1] and crowd conflict [2], with two newly developed crowd features: mean motion speed and a new formulation of crowd density. Two different anomaly detection approaches are investigated using these features. When only normal training data is available we use a Gaussian Mixture Model (GMM) for outlier detection. When both normal and abnormal training data is available we use a Support Vector Machine (SVM) for binary classification. We evaluate on two crowd behaviour anomaly detection datasets, achieving both state-of-the-art classification performance on the violent-flows dataset [3] as well as better than real-time processing performance (40 frames per second)., Comment: 4 pages

14. Two Autistic Savant Readers.

Abstract

Two young autistic children exhibited normal reading comprehension but reading speeds considerably faster than controls. The effect of randomizing word order was minimal for the older of the two autistic boys. Results indicate that efficient grapheme-phoneme conversion is primarily responsible for the fast reading of the autistic children. (Author/JDD)

Abstract

The free movement of goods is seen as one of the success stories of the European Union. The concept supports a stable supply chain based on price, availability and quality. The daily experience of food shopping reveals the extent to which consumers across the EU enjoy goods from other Member States: Italian pasta, French cheese, Spanish wine and British chocolate. The reality today is that millions of food products are traded between Member States each year without traders going near a court, let alone the Court of Justice of the European Union (CJEU). This is the positive dimension of free movement of goods, but there is a darker side too, as revealed by the horsemeat scandal, where ‘beef’ frozen food products were found to contain up to 100 percent horse. The question, then, is how did horsemeat get into the food chain and why did the EU’s food safety regime, premised on the idea of the ‘free movement of safe and wholesome food’, fail to detect it. Was there a failure in the multilevel governance regime which relies so heavily on national enforcement? And will the new legal regime prevent such a food scandal from happening again?

Abstract

In this paper, we propose and evaluate various distance-aware weighting strategies to improve reconstruction accuracy of a voxel-based model according to the Truncated Signed Distance Function (TSDF), from the data obtained by low-cost depth sensors. We look at two strategy directions: (a) weight definition strategies prioritizing importance of the sensed data depending on the data accuracy, and (b) model updating strategies defining the level of influence of the new data on the existing 3D model. In particular, we introduce Distance-Aware (DA) and Distance-Aware Slow-Saturation (DASS) updating methods to intelligently integrate the depth data into the synthetic 3D model based on the distance-sensitivity metric of a low-cost depth sensor. By quantitative and qualitative comparison of the resulting synthetic 3D models to the corresponding ground-truth models, we identify the most promising strategies, which lead to an accuracy improvement involving a reduction of the model error by 10 '—' 35%.

Abstract

This study presents the results of passive acoustic diagnostics of an atmospheric pressure linear field jet source operating inflowing helium. Variations of the electrical, optical and acoustic parameters of the source are monitored with respect to changing gas flow rate [0.5-7 liters per minute (lpm)] and applied voltage amplitude (3.5-7 kV). It was found that the jet length and coupled power were maximized when the jet flow was laminar. Flow mode transitions (buoyant, laminar and turbulent) associated with the jet Richardson number could easily be distinguished acoustically through their unique wavelet scalograms. Each scalogram can also be explained through qualitative correlation with the discharge electrical parameters. As the jet became turbulent, low frequency oscillation (c. 180 Hz) bursts were present in the time-frequency trace which were compared to an empirical relation for the Richardson number in the case of flow induced oscillations. It was found that the frequency value correlated well with the frequency of 200 Hz determined from literature. Anomalous sparking events were detected which manifested as almost constant magnitude, broadband acoustic transients in the time-frequency domain. Comparisons between the average acoustic output power and the average dissipated power from the discharge at two different flow rates (4 lpm and 2 lpm) reveal an approximately equal linear trend for a fixed microphone-discharge placement while in the laminar flow regime. Due to the increased turbulence induced noise, however, no such linear correlation could be drawn. Finally, optical emission spectra from the discharge at a point 8 mm downstream of the plume exit were taken and correlations drawn for each flow regime. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
