Background: The aim of the present study is to evaluate the protective effect of n- BuOH fraction of Genista vepres Pomel and Vitamin E against Isoniazid and Rifampicin (INH- RIF)-induced liver injury. Methods: Male Wistar Albino rats were divided into eight equal groups treated with plant fraction (50 mg/kg, 100 mg/kg), vitamin E (100 mg/kg) and INH-RIF (100 mg/kg body weight /day each). At the end of the experiment, animals were dissected and samples (blood, liver tissue) were removed and isolated for biochemical and histological studies. Results : Administration of INH-RIF for 21 days resulted in hepatic failure as evidenced by the elevation of biochemical parameters levels and hepatic oxidative stress, which was associated with extensive hepatic parenchyma alteration. The pretreatment of the rat with G. vepres Pomel attenuated the increase of hepatic dysfunction markers, significantly decreased the level of malondialdehyde (MDA), and increased GSH level, GPx and catalase activities compared to INH-RIF treated group. However, the Vitamin E co-treatment decreased MDA level and increased GPx activity but did not show any effect on catalase or GSH parameters. The histopathological studies on the liver of rats also supported that both plant fraction and vitamin E markedly reduced the toxicity of INH-RIF and preserved the histoarchitecture of liver tissue. Conclusion: The results suggested that the n-BuOH fraction of G. vepres Pomel acts as a potent hepatoprotective agent against INH-RIF-induced Hepatic dysfunction in rats.

The phytochemical investigation of both chloroform and ethyl acetate extracts of Centaurea microcarpa Coss. & Dur. led to the isolation of a new cyanogenic glucoside 6'-methacrylate prunasin (3) together with seven known compounds: hydroxy-11β,13-dihydro onopordaldehyde (1), β-sitosterol (2), daucosterol (4), nepetin (5), prunasin (6), astragalin (7) and 7-O-β-D-glucopyranosyl centaureidin (8). Their structures were established by spectral analysis, mainly UV, IR, ESI-MS, 1D & 2D-NMR experiments (COSY, HSQC, HMBC and ROESY).

This is the first report on the phytochemistry and antioxidant activity of ethyl acetate and n- butanol extracts from an Algerian endemic plant Verbascum atlanticum Batt. (Scrophulariaceae). Both extracts were subjected to a phytochemical study by semi-preparative HPLC, which led to the isolation and identification of nine compounds: methyl linolenate (1), methyl linoleate (2), Phytol-1(3), Martynoside (4), Isomartynoside (5), Cis-martynoside (6), Ilwensisaponin C (7), Ilwensisaponin B (8), Ilwensisaponin A (9). In addition, the fractions from both extracts were analysed by LC-UV-MS and HRESI-MS. This later revealed the presence of eight other metabolites by using a comparison with known microbial metabolites data. Finally, both extracts were estimated for their phenolic and flavonoid contents as well as the evaluation of their antioxidant activity using five different assays DPPH, CUPRAC, reducing power, β-carotene bleaching and superoxide DMSO alkaline. The results showed that the ethyl acetate extract had the most antioxidant effect.

A new acylated flavonoid glucoside named algerianin 1 and a new as natural product, 4′-methyl gossypetin 2, together with 10 known compounds, isovanillic acid ethyl ester, β-sitosterol, β-sitosterol 3-O-glucoside, a mixture of α and β-amyrin, 3′-hydroxyflindulatin, chrysoeriol, jaceidin, corniculatusin and centaurein were isolated from the ethanolic extract of the flowering and aerial parts of Centaurea africana Lamk var. africana (Bonnet) M., an endemic species to Algeria and Tunisia collected from El-Kala in the eastern Algeria. The structures were established by chemical and spectral analysis, mainly HREIMS, ESIMS, UV and NMR experiments (GOESY, COSY, ROESY, HSQC and HMBC). Algerianin showed cytotoxicity against the human myeloid leukaemia cell line HL-60.

The genus Linaria belongs to the Scrophulariaceae family and comprises about 200 species [1]. It is represented by 39 in Algeria [2]; several species have been used in folk medicine as tonics, antiscorbutics, laxatives, antidiabetics, and diuretics [3, 4]. Previous work on this genus has shown the presence of iridoids, diterpenoids, flavonoids, alkaloids, and phenylethanoids [4–9].

To perform a qualitative and quantitative analysis of the phenolic and flavonoid contents and evaluate the antioxidant activity of ethyl acetate (EtOAc) and n-butanol (n-BuOH) extracts of the aerial parts of Genista ulicina Spach. from Algeria. The qualitative analysis of plant extracts was carried out by RP-HPLC using UV detector, whereas the quantification of total phenolic and flavonoid contents was completed according to the Folin-Ciocalteu procedure and aluminium chloride colorimetric method respectively. To evaluate the extract's antioxidant activity, Two in vitro antioxidant tests were employed: DPPH and β-carotene bleaching assay. The HPLC/DAD chromatogram showed several peaks indicating the presence of phenolic acids, flavonoids and isoflavonoids in both extracts. The total phenolic content (TPC) ranged from 62.56 and 50.45 mgGAE/g extract, while the total flavonoids content varied between 53.1 and 48.4 mgQE/g extract for EtOAC and n-BuOH respectively. EtOAc extract showed a maximum inhibition value (78.15%) at 150µg/mL using DPPH test and highest antioxidative power (82.42%) using β-carotene bleaching assay comparing with standards. The HPLC-UV analysis showed the richeness of both extracts in phenolic and flavonoid contents. The EtOAc extract exhibited good antioxidant activities comparing to the n-BuOH extract. Thus Genista ulicina could be indicated as a plant of phytopharmaceutical importance.
