This study examines the design and utilization of shared streets in the Jiefangbei Business District of Chongqing through the lens of geographical semiotics. Employing photo content analysis, video observation, and questionnaire surveys, this research delves into visual semiotics, place semiotics, and users' interaction order, including social interactions and traffic experiences within these shared spaces. The findings reveal that two distinct systems guide pedestrians and vehicles on Jiefangbei's shared streets, ensuring safety and cultural expression. Paving is identified as the most important method for realizing the sharing of space between people and vehicles. Street furniture emphasizes multifunctional composite use and reflects Jiefangbei's eclectic style since its era as a financial center of the Republic of China, responding to cultural resources and functional positioning. The study also indicates that social functions and public space attributes need enhancement, recommending more greenery and leisure facilities. Interaction order analysis shows that participants' perception of street sharing does not affect their sense of safety and effectiveness. Thus, future practice should base decisions on specific traffic conditions and urban functions. A limitation of this study is the inability to accurately sample the population structure of the Jiefangbei commercial district, preventing more adaptable conclusions. The authors suggest viewing shared space as an evolving process and recommend future research on long-term effects and cross-cultural comparative studies to provide valuable insights into global shared-street design. The telecom sector in India is experiencing significant growth and is projected to reach a market size of USD 214 billion by 2024. However, there is a noticeable urban-rural divide in terms of teledensity, highlighting the need for growth in rural connectivity. Small cells are emerging as a critical solution for network densification, offering targeted coverage in high-density areas and reducing deployment costs. Street furniture, such as streetlights and traffic signals, is being repurposed to host small cells, accelerating 5G deployment. In-building solutions and collaboration with Distribution Companies (DISCOMs) are also crucial for the rollout of 5G. Despite the promising outlook, there are challenges that need to be addressed, such as regulatory hurdles and ensuring reliable electricity supply. The Department of Telecommunications has introduced the Digital Communication Readiness Index (DCRI) to foster healthy competition and accelerate progress towards a fully connected India. By embracing new technologies, leveraging existing infrastructure, and addressing regulatory and operational hurdles, India can create a world-class telecom ecosystem tailored to its diverse needs. The telecom sector in India is poised for an exciting journey, with the focus on bridging the digital divide and transforming connectivity and capacity. [Extracted from the article]

BORDER crossing ,ETHNOLOGY ,GRAFFITI ,CITY dwellers ,OUTDOOR furniture ,HISTORY of cartography ,POLITICAL refugees - Abstract
This article explores the political messaging present on the walls and street furniture of the city of Athens in the context of displacement, border crossing and asylum seeking. It engages with photographs of graffiti, posters, and stencils, taken by the authors between 2017 and 2022, to demonstrate how 'banal' artefacts tell stories of the changing relationship between the city and seekers of sanctuary. We examine what roles graffiti might play in creating and supporting emotional proximity between groups of city dwellers, whose paths might not necessarily cross. Taking inspiration from Tazzioli's notion of the 'ethnography of vanishing spaces' (Tazzioli 2020: 150) the article maps the memories and histories of transient lives in Athens and how changing political responses and narratives can be read on its walls. Outdoor displays become rapidly digital in our digital world. These digital displays are typically emissive, implying a very high‐power consumption to be seen in the daylight, and light pollution in nighttime. Last year Etulipa announced and demonstrated a full colour reflective display based on Electro Wetting Display technology with 10mm pixel pitch. The vertically stacked Cyan Magenta Yellow architecture yields very bright colours. The high switching speed of electrowetting cells enable displaying of video content. The power consumption is 7 W/m 2 implying that the displays can run on solar systems without any need for charging from the grid. The market feedback consists of several exciting applications which are reviewed. Street furniture is expected to be a very early application. Because the typical viewing distance for street furniture applications will be in the order of meters, the pixel pitch should be in the order of millimeters. This requirement defines a technical roadmap for development of the existing electrowetting architecture. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Resilient design, which aims to mitigate the impact of external threats through innovative solutions, is gaining popularity in the architecture industry. It differs from sustainability in that it focuses on countering events rather than resource usage. Examples of resilient design include a residence in central Mexico with a water reservoir to combat dry winters, an earthquake-resistant apartment block in Beirut, and a flexible system of floating pods that adapt to changing water levels. Architects are exploring how these concepts can be scaled to help municipalities facing severe droughts or other challenges. [Extracted from the article]

Definition: Behavior mapping is the systematic observation of people using their environments. The Smart Social Spaces research project, recently completed in Sydney, Australia, is used as a vehicle to illustrate the usefulness of this method for understanding the relationships between people and public spaces in cities. Behavior mapping was the central method used to establish what impact the inclusion of smart technology and street furniture had on people's use of two public spaces. Using this method, it is possible to record real-time patterns of people's use of public space, enabling local authorities to better support the social use of public space and the management of its infrastructure. The city dashboard has become an integral component of smart city asset management systems. It leverages data collected from multiple sources to monitor performance and enable evidence‐based decision making. This article investigates the use of a design thinking framework to develop a functional and easy to understand city dashboard. The Smart Social Spaces project is used as a case study to illustrate how design thinking can be employed to develop an asset management dashboard, enabling efficient management of public space and infrastructure. The article profiles the unique collaboration between a local government, a multi‐disciplinary team of university academics, and a street furniture designer and manufacturer, all located in Sydney, Australia. We unpack some of the design practice nuances that led this project to receive national awards and international recognition, and most importantly, created a user‐friendly system to track and maintain public micro assets. We conclude with lessons learnt and recommendations for dashboard development through a design thinking process. Key messages: Presenting city performance as a readable dataset that can be clearly communicated, while being visually appealing to a lay audience, is a challenge. An interdisciplinary design thinking process applied to dashboard design puts people both at the centre of and in the design process, as well as being at the centre of the outcome. The Smart Asset Management Dashboard served as a catalyst to change data infrastructure and integrate other asset data into a centralized platform for a Sydney‐based local government council. Walking as one type of physical activity generates benefits for personal health and contributes to sustainability in its environmental, economic, and social dimensions. Based on a cross-sectional survey for a representative sample of German cities with at least 100,000 residents, this study investigates determinants of residents' walking behavior. Two contexts of promenading in the city for leisure walking and the trip to the supermarket for utilitarian walking are distinguished in order to investigate differences in respondents' perceived importance of built-environment characteristics and to bridge the gap between the individual level of residents' behavior and the streetscape level. In addition, the analyses distinguish between frequent and less frequent walkers in order to understand differences in characteristics, behavior, preferences, and perceptions between these two groups. The results of this study with a sample of n = 4,637 respondents show that the relevance of the built environment is higher for leisure walking than for utilitarian walking and higher for frequent walkers compared to less frequent walkers. For leisure walking, "protection"-variables are ranked high (e.g. safety, security), followed by "comfort" (e.g. space, surface quality) and by "delight" (e.g. attractive buildings, greenery). Distance is key for utilitarian walking. Significant differences between frequent and less frequent walkers are identified mainly for the "Delight"-variables, this is attractive buildings and greenery for utilitarian walking, and space availability and street furniture for leisure walking. These differences should be considered in future research and street design practice which might preferably focus on the most demanding person group of frequent walkers. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In this paper, a Segment Anything Model (SAM)-based pedestrian infrastructure segmentation workflow is designed and optimized, which is capable of efficiently processing multi-sourced geospatial data, including LiDAR data and satellite imagery data. We used an expanded definition of pedestrian infrastructure inventory, which goes beyond the traditional transportation elements to include street furniture objects that are important for accessibility but are often omitted from the traditional definition. Our contributions lie in producing the necessary knowledge to answer the following three questions. First, how can mobile LiDAR technology be leveraged to produce comprehensive pedestrian-accessible infrastructure inventory? Second, which data representation can facilitate zero-shot segmentation of infrastructure objects with SAM? Third, how well does the SAM-based method perform on segmenting pedestrian infrastructure objects? Our proposed method is designed to efficiently create pedestrian-accessible infrastructure inventory through the zero-shot segmentation of multi-sourced geospatial datasets. Through addressing three research questions, we show how the multi-mode data should be prepared, what data representation works best for what asset features, and how SAM performs on these data presentations. Our findings indicate that street-view images generated from mobile LiDAR point-cloud data, when paired with satellite imagery data, can work efficiently with SAM to create a scalable pedestrian infrastructure inventory approach with immediate benefits to GIS professionals, city managers, transportation owners, and walkers, especially those with travel-limiting disabilities, such as individuals who are blind, have low vision, or experience mobility disabilities. The impacts of climate change on heritage collections in Mediterranean museums are serious and lead to accelerated material degradation, loss of value, increasing conservation costs and climatisation. Climate change scenarios and simulation models have been developed to predict the extreme and average future environmental conditions and to assess the future long-term risks caused by global warming for museum buildings and their collections in Mediterranean countries, with Egypt being particularly at risk. This paper presents the results of the risk analysis of the indoor and outdoor environments in Alexandria Museum of Fine Arts (AMFA) in Egypt to provide an overview of the current situation of conservation and museum management and to provide evidence-based data to support decision-making regarding preventive conservation given the museum's limited funding, capacity and resources. Unfortunately, the air quality in the museum cannot be considered satisfactory and specific measures need to be taken to improve the level of air quality and museum and building management. The results enabled an assessment of indoor air quality and provided information on potential risks to the museum building and collections, including variations in temperature (T) and relative humidity (RH), concentrations of NO2, SO2, O3, CO2, acetic and formic acid and lighting conditions, as well as the location and management of the museum. The results necessitate the development of a preventive conservation plan to address the challenges associated with high T/RH fluctuations and pollution pressure. This requires more regular use of the HVAC system within certain T/RH set points as well as minimising light exposure and the use of UV-filtering glazing. Care should be taken to ensure that housekeeping and emergency preparedness reduce the damping and salt florescence in the museum building. However, dealing with the impact of climate change on indoor and outdoor environments and museum collections in Mediterranean museums requires a holistic and adaptive approach that includes joint collaboration, research, training and strategic planning to ensure the long-term preservation of valuable cultural heritage collections in different climates with customised adaptations based on local environmental conditions, resources and needs. Resilience planning should be region-specific and take into account the potential impacts of extreme weather events, sea level rise and other climate-related challenges. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The city corridor is a strategic area with its own aesthetic and functional value. In connection with the city's beauty, streetscape is one of the determining aspects in terms of architecture and spatial planning. The existence of streetscape tends to be overlooked, resulting in the area lacking identity. The presence of streetscape with character can provide a strong identity for the area, especially when the corridor in question has strategic value in terms of function and location. Proximity to the coastal area is indeed one of the advantages, although currently, it is still hidden, especially architecturally. This research aims to analyze streetscape elements with a coastal area approach. The research location is in the corridor of Piere Tendean Street, Manado, divided into 3 segments. The observed units include pedestrians, street furniture, activities, and buildings on the roadside. The conclusion is obtained that there are soft elements, hard elements, mobile elements, and natural elements. Elements closely related to the coastal area are mobile elements, such as activities enjoying the beauty of the beach equipped with breakwaters, activities in pedestrian and park locations, as well as fishing activities conducted in the empty space where the river meets the beach. Sofía Vergara worked with designer Ohara Davies-Gaetano to transform her Beverly Park mansion into a comfortable and inviting home. Despite the challenges posed by the existing architecture, Vergara wanted to create a space that felt lived-in and layered with history. The house is now filled with Continental antiques, decorative lighting, and subtle accents of color. The refreshed landscape, designed by Stephen Block, adds vibrant elements and connects Vergara to her Colombian roots. The result is a home that allows Vergara to entertain guests in style and enjoy her surroundings every day. [Extracted from the article]
