We have combined atomic layer lithography and template stripping to produce a new class of substrates for surface-enhanced infrared absorption (SEIRA) spectroscopy. Our structure consists of a buried and U-shaped metal-insulator-metal waveguide whose folded vertical arms efficiently couple normally incident light. The insulator is formed by atomic layer deposition (ALD) of Al2O3 and precisely defines the gap size. The buried nanocavities are protected from contamination by a silicon template until ready for use and exposed by template stripping on demand. The exposed nanocavity generates strong infrared resonances, tightly confines infrared radiation into a gap that is as small as 3 nm ({\lambda}/3300), and creates a dense array of millimeter-long hotspots. After partial removal of the insulators, the gaps are backfilled with benzenethiol molecules, generating distinct Fano resonances due to strong coupling with gap plasmons, and a SEIRA enhancement factor of 10^5 is observed for a 3 nm gap. Because of the wafer-scale manufacturability, single-digit-nanometer control of the gap size via ALD, and long-term storage enabled by template stripping, our buried plasmonic nanocavity substrates will benefit broad applications in sensing and spectroscopy.

The ability to control light polarization state is critically important for diverse applications in information processing, telecommunications, and spectroscopy. Here, we propose that a stack of anisotropic van der Waals materials can facilitate the building of optical elements with Jones matrices of unitary, Hermitian, non-normal, singular, degenerate, and defective classes. We show that the twisted stack with electrostatic control can function as arbitrary-birefringent wave-plate or arbitrary polarizer with tunable degree of non-normality, which in turn give access to plethora of polarization transformers including rotators, pseudorotators, symmetric and ambidextrous polarizers. Moreover, we discuss an electrostatic-reconfigurable stack which can be tuned to operate as four different polarizers and be used for Stokes polarimetry.

Vertical plasmonic coupling in double-layer graphene leads to two hybridized plasmonic modes: optical and acoustic plasmons with symmetric and anti-symmetric charge distributions across the interlayer gap, respectively. However, in most experiments based on far-field excitation, only the optical plasmons are dominantly excited in the double-layer graphene systems. Here, we propose strategies to selectively and efficiently excite acoustic plasmons with a single or multiple nano-emitters. The analytical model developed here elucidates the role of the position and arrangement of the emitters on the symmetry of the resulting graphene plasmons. We present an optimal device structure to enable experimental observation of acoustic plasmons in double-layer graphene toward the ultimate level of plasmonic confinement defined by a monoatomic spacer, which is inaccesible with a graphene-on-a-mirror architecture.

Properties of graphene plasmons are greatly affected by their coupling to phonons. While such coupling has been routinely observed in both near-field and far-field graphene spectroscopy, the interplay between coupling strength and mode losses, and its exceptional point physics has not been discussed. By applying a non-Hermitian framework, we identify the transition point between strong and weak coupling as the exceptional point. Enhanced sensitivity to perturbations near the exceptional point is observed by varying the coupling strength and through gate modulation of the graphene Fermi level. Finally, we also show that the transition from strong to weak coupling is observable by changing the incident angle of radiation., Comment: 7 pages, 4 figures

Although van der Waals layered transition metal dichalcogenides from transient absorption spectroscopy have successfully demonstrated an ideal carrier multiplication (CM) performance with an onset of nearly 2Eg,interpretation of the CM effect from the optical approach remains unresolved owing to the complexity of many-body electron-hole pairs. We demonstrate the CM effect through simple photocurrent measurements by fabricating the dual-gate P-N junction of a MoTe2 film on a transparent substrate. Electrons and holes were efficiently extracted by eliminating the Schottky barriers in the metal contact and minimizing multiple reflections. The photocurrent was elevated proportionately to the excitation energy. The boosted quantum efficiency confirms the multiple electron-hole pair generation of >2Eg, consistent with CM results from an optical approach, pushing the solar cell efficiency beyond the Shockley-Queisser limit.

Plasmonic enhancement of nonlinear optical processes confront severe limitations arising from the strong dispersion of metal susceptibilities and small interaction volumes that hamper desirable phase-matching-like conditions. Maximizing nonlinear interactions in nanoscale systems require simultaneous excitation of resonant modes that spatially and constructively overlap at all wavelengths involved in the process. Here, we present a hybrid rectangular patch antenna design for optimal second harmonic generation (SHG) that is characterized by a non-centrosymmetric dielectric/ferroelectric material at the plasmonic hot spot. The optimization of the rectangular patch allows for the independent tuning of various modes of resonances that can be used to enhance the SHG process. We explore the angular dependence of SHG in these hybrid structures and highlight conditions necessary for maximal SHG efficiency. Furthermore, we propose a novel configuration with a periodically-poled ferroelectric layer for orders-of-magnitude enhanced SHG at normal incidence. Such a platform may enable the development of integrated nanoscale light sources and on-chip frequency converters.

An acoustic plasmonic mode in a graphene-dielectric-metal heterostructure has recently been spotlighted as a superior platform for strong light-matter interaction. It originates from the coupling of graphene plasmon with its mirror image and exhibits the largest field confinement in the limit of a nm-thick dielectric. Although recently detected in the far-field regime, optical near-fields of this mode are yet to be observed and characterized. Direct optical probing of the plasmonic fields reflected by the edges of graphene via near-field scattering microscope reveals a relatively small damping rate of the mid-IR acoustic plasmons in our devices, which allows for their real-space mapping even with unprotected, chemically grown, large-area graphene at ambient conditions. We show an acoustic mode that is twice as confined - yet 1.4 times less damped - compared to the graphene surface plasmon under similar conditions. We also image the resonant acoustic Bloch state in a 1D array of gold nanoribbons responsible for the high efficiency of the far-field coupling. Our results highlight the importance of acoustic plasmons as an exceptionally promising platform for large-area graphene-based optoelectronic devices operating in mid-IR.

We derive the formulas for the resonance frequencies and their sensitivity when the nano-slit structures are used in the detection of thin layers. For a thin layer with a thickness of $H$ deposited over the nanostructure, we show quantitatively that for both single and periodic slit structures with slit aperture size $\delta$, the sensitivity of resonance frequency reduces as $H$ increases. Specifically, the sensitivity is of order $O(\delta/H)$ if $H >\delta$ and of order $O(1+\ln H/\delta)$ otherwise. The evanescent wave modes are present along the interface between the thin dielectric film and ambient medium above. From the mathematical derivations, it is observed that the sensitivity of the resonance frequency highly depends on the effect of evanescent wave modes on the tiny slit apertures.

In this paper, we develop a nested hybridizable discontinuous Galerkin (HDG) method to numerically solve the Maxwell's equations coupled with the hydrodynamic model for the conduction-band electrons in metals. By means of a static condensation to eliminate the degrees of freedom of the approximate solution defined in the elements, the HDG method yields a linear system in terms of the degrees of freedom of the approximate trace defined on the element boundaries. Furthermore, we propose to reorder these degrees of freedom so that the linear system accommodates a second static condensation to eliminate a large portion of the degrees of freedom of the approximate trace, thereby yielding a much smaller linear system. For the particular metallic structures considered in this paper, the resulting linear system obtained by means of nested static condensations is a block tridiagonal system, which can be solved efficiently. We apply the nested HDG method to compute the second harmonic generation (SHG) on a triangular coaxial periodic nanogap structure. This nonlinear optics phenomenon features rapid field variations and extreme boundary-layer structures that span multiple length scales. Numerical results show that the ability to identify structures which exhibit resonances at $\omega$ and $2\omega$ is paramount to excite the second harmonic response., Comment: 31 pages, 7 figures

Vibrational ultrastrong coupling (USC), where the light-matter coupling strength is comparable to the vibrational frequency of molecules, presents new opportunities to probe the interactions of molecules with zero-point fluctuations, harness cavity-enhanced chemical reactions, and develop novel devices in the mid-infrared regime. Here we use epsilon-near-zero nanocavities filled with a model polar medium (SiO$_2$) to demonstrate USC between phonons and gap plasmons. We present classical and quantum mechanical models to quantitatively describe the observed plasmon-phonon USC phenomena and demonstrate a splitting of up to 50% of the resonant frequency. Polaritons in two-dimensional materials provide extreme light confinement that is difficult to achieve with metal plasmonics. However, such tight confinement inevitably increases optical losses through various damping channels. Here we demonstrate that hyperbolic phonon polaritons in hexagonal boron nitride can overcome this fundamental trade-off. Among two observed polariton modes, featuring a symmetric and antisymmetric charge distribution, the latter exhibits lower optical losses and tighter polariton confinement. Far-field excitation and detection of this high-momenta mode becomes possible with our resonator design that can boost the coupling efficiency via virtual polariton modes with image charges that we dub image polaritons. Using these image polaritons, we experimentally observe a record-high effective index of up to 132 and quality factors as high as 501. Further, our phenomenological theory suggests an important role of hyperbolic surface scattering in the damping process of hyperbolic phonon polaritons.

Recent results have shown unprecedented control over separation distances between two metallic elements hundreds of nanometers in size, underlying the effects of free-electron nonlocal response also at mid-infrared wavelengths. Most of metallic systems however, still suffer from some degree of inhomogeneity due to fabrication-induced surface roughness. Nanoscale roughness in such systems might hinder the understanding of the role of microscopic interactions. Here we investigate the effect of surface roughness in coaxial nanoapertures resonating at mid-infrared frequencies. We show that although random roughness shifts the resonances in an unpredictable way, the impact of nonlocal effects can still be clearly observed. Roughness-induced perturbation on the peak resonance of the system shows a strong correlation with the effective gap size of the individual samples. Fluctuations due to fabrication imperfections then can be suppressed by performing measurements on structure ensembles in which averaging over a large number of samples provides a precise measure of the ideal system's optical properties.

The main challenge to exploiting plasmons for gas vibrational mode sensing is the extremely weak infrared absorption of gas species. In this work, we explore the possibility of trapping free gas molecules via surface adsorption, optical, or electrostatic fields to enhance gas-plasmon interactions and to increase plasmon sensing ability. We discuss the relative strengths of these trapping forces and found gas adsorption in a typical nanoribbon array plasmonic setup produces measurable dips in optical extinction of magnitude 0.1 % for gas concentration of about parts per thousand level.

Waveguide-integrated plasmonics is a growing field with many innovative concepts and demonstrated devices in the visible and near-infrared. Here, we extend this body of work to the mid-infrared for the application of surface-enhanced infrared absorption (SEIRA), a spectroscopic method to probe molecular vibrations in small volumes and thin films. Built atop a silicon-on-insulator (SOI) waveguide platform, two key plasmonic structures useful for SEIRA are examined using computational modeling: gold nanorods and coaxial nanoapertures. We find resonance dips of 80% in near diffraction-limited areas due to arrays of our structures and up to 40% from a single resonator. Each of the structures are evaluated using the simulated SEIRA signal from poly(methyl methacrylate) and an octadecanethiol self-assembled monolayer. The platforms we present allow for a compact, on-chip SEIRA sensing system with highly efficient waveguide coupling in the mid-IR.

Recently, it was demonstrated that a graphene/dielectric/metal configuration can support acoustic plasmons, which exhibit extreme plasmon confinement an order of magnitude higher than that of conventional graphene plasmons. Here, we investigate acoustic plasmons supported in a monolayer and multilayers of black phosphorus (BP) placed just a few nanometers above a conducting plate. In the presence of a conducting plate, the acoustic plasmon dispersion for the armchair direction is found to exhibit the characteristic linear scaling in the mid- and far-infrared regime while it largely deviates from that in the long wavelength limit and near-infrared regime. For the zigzag direction, such scaling behavior is not evident due to relatively tighter plasmon confinement. Further, we demonstrate a new design for an acoustic plasmon resonator that exhibits higher plasmon confinement and resonance efficiency than BP ribbon resonators in the mid-infrared and longer wavelength regime. Theoretical framework and new resonator design studied here provide a practical route toward the experimental verification of the acoustic plasmons in BP and open up the possibility to develop novel plasmonic and optoelectronic devices that can leverage its strong in-plane anisotropy and thickness-dependent band gap.

We present a graphene-based metasurface that can be actively tuned between different regimes of operation, such as anomalous beam steering and focusing, cloaking and illusion optics, by applying electrostatic gating without modifying the geometry of the metasurface. The metasurface is designed by placing graphene nano-ribbons (GNRs) on a dielectric cavity resonator, where interplay between geometric plasmon resonances in the ribbons and Fabry-Perot resonances in the cavity is used to achieve 2$\pi$ phase shift. As a proof of the concept, we demonstrate that wavefront of the field reflected from a triangular bump covered by the metasurface can be tuned by applying electric bias so as to resemble that of bare plane and of a spherical object. Moreover, reflective focusing and change of the reflection direction for the above-mentioned cases are also shown.

The interaction of light with metallic nanostructures produces a collective excitation of electrons at the metal surface, also known as surface plasmons. These collective excitations lead to resonances that enable the confinement of light in deep-subwavelength regions, thereby leading to large near-field enhancements. The simulation of plasmon resonances presents notable challenges. From the modeling perspective, the realistic behavior of conduction-band electrons in metallic nanostructures is not captured by Maxwell's equations, thus requiring additional modeling. From the simulation perspective, the disparity in length scales stemming from the extreme field localization demands efficient and accurate numerical methods. In this paper, we develop the hybridizable discontinuous Galerkin (HDG) method to solve Maxwell's equations augmented with the hydrodynamic model for the conduction-band electrons in noble metals. This method enables the efficient simulation of plasmonic nanostructures while accounting for the nonlocal interactions between electrons and the incident light. We introduce a novel postprocessing scheme to recover superconvergent solutions and demonstrate the convergence of the proposed HDG method for the simulation of a 2D gold nanowire and a 3D periodic annular nanogap structure. The results of the hydrodynamic model are compared to those of a simplified local response model, showing that differences between them can be significant at the nanoscale., Comment: 27 pages, 8 figures

Solid-state quantum emitters, such as artificially engineered quantum dots or naturally occurring defects in solids, are being investigated for applications ranging from quantum information science and optoelectronics to biomedical imaging. Recently, these same systems have also been studied from the perspective of nanoscale metrology. In this letter we study the near-field optical properties of a diamond nanocrystal hosting a single nitrogen vacancy center. We find that the nitrogen vacancy center is a sensitive probe of the surrounding electromagnetic mode structure. We exploit this sensitivity to demonstrate nanoscale fluorescence lifetime imaging microscopy (FLIM) with a single nitrogen vacancy center by imaging the local density of states of an optical antenna., Comment: 12 pages, 4 figures and supporting information
