We report a detailed study of the magnetic-field structure of the Crab pulsar wind nebula, using the X-ray polarization data in 2--8~keV obtained with the Imaging X-ray Polarimetry Explorer. Contamination of the pulsar emission to the data of the nebula region was removed through application of a stringent pulsation phase-cut, extracting a phase range of 0.7--1.0 only. We found that the electric field vector polarization angle (PA) was about $130^{\circ}$ from north to east with the polarization degree (PD) of about 25\% at the pulsar position, indicating that the direction of the toroidal magnetic field is perpendicular to the pulsar spin axis in the region close to the termination shock. The PA gradually deviated from the angle as an increasing function of the distance from the pulsar. There was a region of a low PD to the west of the X-ray torus. Although such a region is expected to be located at the torus edge, where geometrical depolarization due to a steep spatial variation of the PA is expected, the observed low-PD region positionally deviated from the edge. We found that the region of low PD positionally coincided with a dense filament seen in the optical band, and conjecture that the low-PD region may be produced through deflection of the pulsar wind. By comparing the values of the PD at the pulsar position between the data and a model, in which toroidal and turbulent magnetic fields were considered, we estimated the fractional energy of the turbulent magnetic field to be about $2/3$ of the total. We present new results on up to $6^{th}$ order cumulants of net baryon-number fluctuations at small values of the baryon chemical potential, $\mu_B$, obtained in lattice QCD calculations with physical values of light and strange quark masses. Representation of the Taylor expansions of higher order cumulants in terms of the ratio of the two lowest order cumulants, $M_B/\sigma_B^2=\chi_1^B(T,\mu_B)/\chi_2^B(T,\mu_B)$, allows for a parameter free comparison with data on net proton-number cumulants obtained by the STAR Collaboration in the Beam Energy Scan at RHIC. We show that recent high statistics data on skewness and kurtosis ratios of net proton-number distributions, obtained at beam energy $\sqrt{s_{_{NN}}}=54.4$ GeV, agree well with lattice QCD results on cumulants of net baryon-number fluctuations close to the pseudo-critical temperature, $T_{pc}(\mu_B)$, for the chiral transition in QCD. We report here the results of two-dimensional electron gas based micro-Hall magnetometry measurements and micromagnetic simulations of dipolar coupled nanomagnets of Ni80Fe20 arranged in a double ring-like geometry. We observe that although magnetic force microscopy images exhibit single domain like magnetic states for the nanostructures, their reversal processes may undergo complex behavior. The details of such reversal behavior is observed as specific features in micro-Hall magnetometry data which compares well with the micromagnetic simulation data., Comment: 5 pages, 4 figures

We present a lattice QCD based determination of the chiral phase transition temperature in QCD with two degenerate, massless quarks and a physical strange quark mass. We propose and calculate two novel estimators for the chiral transition temperature for several values of the light quark masses, corresponding to Goldstone pion masses in the range of $58~{\rm MeV}\lesssim m_\pi\lesssim 163~{\rm MeV}$. The chiral phase transition temperature is determined by extrapolating to vanishing pion mass using universal scaling analysis. Finite volume effects are controlled by extrapolating to the thermodynamic limit using spatial lattice extents in the range of $2.8$-$4.5$ times the inverse of the pion mass. Continuum extrapolations are carried out by using three different values of the lattice cut-off, corresponding to lattices with temporal extent $N_\tau=6,\ 8$ and $12$. After thermodynamic, continuum and chiral extrapolations we find the chiral phase transition temperature $T_c^0=132^{+3}_{-6}$ MeV., Comment: published version in journal

In this work, we strive to gain insight into thermal modifications of charmonium and bottomonium bound states as well as the heavy quark diffusion coefficient. The desired information is contained in the spectral function which can not be calculated on the lattice directly. Instead, the correlator given by an integration over the spectral function times an integration kernel is obtained. Extracting the spectral function is an ill-posed inversion problem and various different solutions have been proposed. We focus on a comparison to a spectral function obtained from combining perturbative and pNRQCD calculations. In order to get precise results, continuum extrapolated correlators originating from large and fine lattices are used. We first analyze the pseudoscalar channel since the absence of a transport peak simplifies the analysis. The knowledge gained from this is then used to extend the analysis to the vector channel, where information on heavy quark transport is encoded in the low frequency regime of the spectral function. The comparison shows a qualitatively good agreement between perturbative and lattice correlators. We present results for pseudo-critical temperatures of QCD chiral crossovers at zero and non-zero values of baryon ($B$), strangeness ($S$), electric charge ($Q$), and isospin ($I$) chemical potentials $\mu_{X=B,Q,S,I}$. The results were obtained using lattice QCD calculations carried out with two degenerate up and down dynamical quarks and a dynamical strange quark, with quark masses corresponding to physical values of pion and kaon masses in the continuum limit. By parameterizing pseudo-critical temperatures as $ T_c(\mu_X) = T_c(0) \left[ 1 -\kappa_2^{X}(\mu_{X}/T_c(0))^2 -\kappa_4^{X}(\mu_{X}/T_c(0))^4 \right] $, we determined $\kappa_2^X$ and $\kappa_4^X$ from Taylor expansions of chiral observables in $\mu_X$. We obtained a precise result for $T_c(0)=(156.5\pm1.5)\;\mathrm{MeV}$. For analogous thermal conditions at the chemical freeze-out of relativistic heavy-ion collisions, i.e., $\mu_{S}(T,\mu_{B})$ and $\mu_{Q}(T,\mu_{B})$ fixed from strangeness-neutrality and isospin-imbalance, we found $\kappa_2^B=0.012(4)$ and $\kappa_4^B=0.000(4)$. For $\mu_{B}\lesssim300\;\mathrm{MeV}$, the chemical freeze-out takes place in the vicinity of the QCD phase boundary, which coincides with the lines of constant energy density of $0.42(6)\;\mathrm{GeV/fm}^3$ and constant entropy density of $3.7(5)\;\mathrm{fm}^{-3}$.

Nanoscale magnetic tunnel junction plays a pivotal role in magnetoresistive random access memories. Successful implementation depends on a simultaneous achievement of low switching current for the magnetization switching by spin-transfer torque and high thermal stability, along with a continuous reduction of junction size. Perpendicular-easy-axis CoFeB/MgO stacks possessing interfacial anisotropy have paved the way down to 20-nm scale, below which a new approach needs to be explored. Here we show magnetic tunnel junctions that satisfy the requirements at ultrafine scale by revisiting shape anisotropy, which is a classical part of magnetic anisotropy but has not been fully utilized in the current perpendicular systems. Magnetization switching solely driven by current is achieved for junctions smaller than 10 nm where sufficient thermal stability is provided by shape anisotropy without adopting new material systems. This work is expected to push forward the development of magnetic tunnel junctions towards single-digit-nm-scale nano-magnetics/spintronics.

The pseudoscalar correlator is an ideal lattice probe for thermal modifications to quarkonium spectra, given that it is not compromised by a contribution from a large transport peak. We construct a perturbative spectral function incorporating resummed thermal effects around the threshold and vacuum asymptotics above the threshold, and compare the corresponding imaginary-time correlators with continuum-extrapolated lattice data for quenched SU(3) at several temperatures. Modest differences are observed, which may originate from non-perturbative mass shifts or renormalization factors, however no resonance peaks are needed for describing the quenched lattice data for charmonium at and above T ~ 1.1Tc ~ 350 MeV. We present results for the ratios of mean ($M_B$), variance ($\sigma_B^2$), skewness ($S_B)$ and kurtosis ($\kappa_B$) of net baryon-number fluctuations obtained in lattice QCD calculations with a physical light to strange quark mass ratio. Using next-to-leading order Taylor expansions in baryon chemical potential we find that qualitative features of these ratios closely resemble the corresponding experimentally measured cumulants ratios of net proton-number fluctuations for beam energies down to $\sqrt{s_{_{NN}}} \ge 19.6$ GeV. We show that the difference in cumulant ratios for the mean net baryon-number, $M_B/\sigma_B^2=\chi_1^B(T,\mu_B)/\chi_2^B(T,\mu_B)$ and the normalized skewness, $S_B\sigma_B=\chi_3^B(T,\mu_B)/\chi_2^B(T,\mu_B)$, naturally arises in QCD thermodynamics. Moreover, we establish a close relation between skewness and kurtosis ratios, $S_B\sigma_B^3/M_B=\chi_3^B(T,\mu_B)/\chi_1^B(T,\mu_B)$ and $\kappa_B\sigma_B^2=\chi_4^B(T,\mu_B)/\chi_2^B(T,\mu_B)$, valid at small values of the baryon chemical potential., Comment: 14 pages, 13 figures, minor updates, final version

Ferromagnets are key materials for sensing and memory applications. In contrast, antiferromagnets that represent the more common form of magnetically ordered materials, have so far found less practical application beyond their use for establishing reference magnetic orientations via exchange bias. This might change in the future due to the recent progress in materials research and discoveries of antiferromagnetic spintronic phenomena suitable for device applications. Experimental demonstrations of the electrical switching and electrical detection of the N\'eel order open a route towards memory devices based on antiferromagnets. Apart from the radiation and magnetic-field hardness, memory cells fabricated in antiferromagnets are inherently multilevel which could be used for neuromorphic computing. Switching speeds attainable in antiferromagnets far exceed those of the ferromagnetic and semiconductor memory technologies. Here we review the recent progress in electronic spin-transport and spin-torque phenomena in antiferromagnets that are dominantly of the relativistic quantum mechanics origin. We calculated the QCD equation of state using Taylor expansions that include contributions from up to sixth order in the baryon, strangeness and electric charge chemical potentials. Calculations have been performed with the Highly Improved Staggered Quark action in the temperature range $T\in [135~{\rm MeV}, 330~{\rm MeV}]$ using up to four different sets of lattice cut-offs corresponding to lattices of size $N_\sigma^3\times N_\tau$ with aspect ratio $N_\sigma/N_\tau=4$ and $N_\tau =6-16$. The strange quark mass is tuned to its physical value and we use two strange to light quark mass ratios $m_s/m_l=20$ and $27$, which in the continuum limit correspond to a pion mass of about $160$ MeV and $140$ MeV espectively. Sixth-order results for Taylor expansion coefficients are used to estimate truncation errors of the fourth-order expansion. We show that truncation errors are small for baryon chemical potentials less then twice the temperature ($\mu_B\le 2T$). The fourth-order equation of state thus is suitable for the modeling of dense matter created in heavy ion collisions with center-of-mass energies down to $\sqrt{s_{NN}}\sim 12$ GeV. We provide a parametrization of basic thermodynamic quantities that can be readily used in hydrodynamic simulation codes. The results on up to sixth order expansion coefficients of bulk thermodynamics are used for the calculation of lines of constant pressure, energy and entropy densities in the $T$-$\mu_B$ plane and are compared with the crossover line for the QCD chiral transition as well as with experimental results on freeze-out parameters in heavy ion collisions. These coefficients also provide estimates for the location of a possible critical point. We argue that results on sixth order expansion coefficients disfavor the existence of a critical point in the QCD phase diagram for $\mu_B/T\le 2$ and $T/T_c(\mu_B=0) > 0.9$., Comment: Updated to correspond to journal version. We study the curvature of the chiral transition/crossover line between the low-temperature hadronic phase and the high-temperature quark-gluon-plasma phase at low densities, performing simulations of two-flavor QCD with improved Wilson quarks. After confirming that the chiral order parameter defined by a Ward-Takahashi identity is consistent with the scaling of the O(4) universality class at zero chemical potential, we extend the scaling analysis to finite chemical potential to determine the curvature of the chiral transition/crossover line at low densities assuming the O(4) universality. To convert the curvature in lattice units to that of the $T_c(\mu_B)$ in physical units, we evaluate the lattice scale applying a gradient flow method. Recently, Kobayashi et al. (arXiv:1608.07718; ref. 1) have proposed an alternative interpretation of our angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES) results for the dilute ferromagnetic semiconductor (Ga,Mn)As. They claim that our ARPES data [Sci. Rep. 6, 27266 (2016); ref. 2] can be explained by locating the Fermi level EF above the valence-band top, supporting the impurity-band model of ferromagnetic (Ga,Mn)As. In this comment, we show that the assignment of bands' positions in respect to EF by Kobayashi et al. is not consistent with our data. By comparing the ARPES result to band-structure calculations, we demonstrate clearly that EF resides inside the valence band in accordance with the p-d Zener model., Comment: 5 pages, 1 figure

Carrier-induced nature of ferromagnetism in a ferromagnetic semiconductor, (Ga,Mn)As, offers a great opportunity to observe novel spin-related phenomena as well as to demonstrate new functionalities of spintronic devices. Here, we report on low-temperature angle-resolved photoemission studies of the valence band in this model compound. By a direct determination of the distance of the split-off band to the Fermi energy EF, we conclude that EF is located within the heavy/light hole band. However, the bands are strongly perturbed by disorder and disorder-induced carrier correlations that lead to the Coulomb gap at EF, which we resolve experimentally in a series of samples, and show that its depth and width enlarge when the Curie temperature decreases. Furthermore, we have detected surprising linear magnetic dichroism in photoemission spectra of the split-off band. By a quantitative theoretical analysis we demonstrate that it arises from the Dresselhaus-type spin-orbit term in zinc-blende crystals. The spectroscopic access to the magnitude of such asymmetric part of spin-orbit coupling is worthwhile, as they account for spin-orbit torque in spintronic devices of ferromagnets without inversion symmetry., Comment: 30 pages, 5 figures, supplemental info included

We observe magnetic domain structures of MgO/CoFeB with a perpendicular magnetic easy axis under an electric field. The domain structure shows a maze pattern with electric-field dependent isotropic period. We find that the electric-field modulation of the period is explained by considering the electric-field modulation of the exchange stiffness constant in addition to the known magnetic anisotropy modulation.

We discuss the next-to-leading order Taylor expansion of ratios of cumulants of net-baryon number fluctuations. We focus on the relation between the skewness ratio, $S_B\sigma_B = \chi_3^B/\chi_1^B$, and the kurtosis ratio, $\kappa_B\sigma_B^2 =\chi_4^B/\chi_2^B$. We show that differences in these two cumulant ratios are small for small values of the baryon chemical potential. The next-to-leading order correction to $\kappa_B\sigma_B^2$ however is approximately three times larger than that for $S_B\sigma_B$. The former thus drops much more rapidly with increasing beam energy, $\sqrt{s_{NN}}$. We calculate the mean and variance of net-baryon number and net-electric charge distributions from Quantum Chromodynamics (QCD) using a next-to-leading order Taylor expansion in terms of temperature and chemical potentials. We compare these expansions with experimental data from STAR and PHENIX, determine the freeze-out temperature in the limit of vanishing baryon chemical potential, and, for the first time, constrain the curvature of the freeze-out line through a direct comparison between experimental data on net-charge fluctuations and a QCD calculation. We obtain a bound on the curvature coefficient, kappa_2^f < 0.011, that is compatible with lattice QCD results on the curvature of the QCD transition line., Comment: 5 pages, 2 figures

We estimate the momentum diffusion coefficient of a heavy quark within a pure SU(3) plasma at a temperature of about 1.5Tc. Large-scale Monte Carlo simulations on a series of lattices extending up to 192^3*48 permit us to carry out a continuum extrapolation of the so-called colour-electric imaginary-time correlator. The extrapolated correlator is analyzed with the help of theoretically motivated models for the corresponding spectral function. Evidence for a non-zero transport coefficient is found and, incorporating systematic uncertainties reflecting model assumptions, we obtain kappa = (1.8 - 3.4)T^3. This implies that the "drag coefficient", characterizing the time scale at which heavy quarks adjust to hydrodynamic flow, is (1.8 - 3.4) (Tc/T)^2 (M/1.5GeV) fm/c, where M is the heavy quark kinetic mass. We present continuum extrapolated lattice QCD results for up to fourth-order diagonal and off-diagonal quark number susceptibilities in the high temperature region of 300-700 MeV. Lattice QCD calculations are performed using 2+1 flavors of highly improved staggered quarks with nearly physical quark masses and at four different lattice spacings. We explore a method developed in statistical physics which has been argued to have exponentially small finite-volume effects, in order to determine the critical temperature Tc of pure SU(3) gauge theory close to the continuum limit. The method allows us to estimate the critical coupling betac of the Wilson action for temporal extents up to Nt ~ 20 with < 0.1% uncertainties. Making use of the scale setting parameters r0 and sqrt{t0} in the same range of beta-values, these results lead to the independent continuum extrapolations Tc r0 = 0.7457(45) and Tc sqrt{t0} = 0.2489(14), with the latter originating from a more convincing fit. Quarkonium properties at finite temperature have been studied with quark masses of the charm and bottom quarks. Our simulations have been performed in quenched QCD with the $O(a)$-improved Wilson quarks on large and fine isotropic lattices with the spatial lattice extents $N_\sigma =$ 96, 192 and the corresponding lattice spacings $a =$ 0.0190, 0.00967 fm, respectively, at temperatures in a range between about 0.7$T_c$ and 1.4$T_c$. We compare lattice QCD results for appropriate combinations of net strangeness fluctuations and their correlations with net baryon number fluctuations with predictions from two hadron resonance gas (HRG) models having different strange hadron content. The conventionally used HRG model based on experimentally established strange hadrons fails to describe the lattice QCD results in the hadronic phase close to the QCD crossover. Supplementing the conventional HRG with additional, experimentally uncharted strange hadrons predicted by quark model calculations and observed in lattice QCD spectrum calculations leads to good descriptions of strange hadron thermodynamics below the QCD crossover. We show that the thermodynamic presence of these additional states gets imprinted in the yields of the ground-state strange hadrons leading to a systematic 5--8 MeV decrease of the chemical freeze-out temperatures of ground-state strange baryons., Comment: version published in Physical Review Letters

Ratios of cumulants of conserved net charge fluctuations are sensitive to the degrees of freedom that are carriers of the corresponding quantum numbers in different phases of strong interaction matter. Using lattice QCD with 2+1 dynamical flavors and quenched charm quarks we calculate second and fourth order cumulants of net charm fluctuations and their correlations with other conserved charges such as net baryon number, electric charge and strangeness. Analyzing appropriate ratios of these cumulants we probe the nature of charmed degrees of freedom in the vicinity of the QCD chiral crossover region. We show that for temperatures above the chiral crossover transition temperature, charmed degrees of freedom can no longer be described by an uncorrelated gas of hadrons. This suggests that the dissociation of open charm hadrons and the emergence of deconfined charm states sets in just near the chiral crossover transition. Till the crossover region we compare these lattice QCD results with two hadron resonance gas models --including only the experimentally established charmed resonances and also including additional states predicted by quark model and lattice QCD calculations. This comparison provides evidence for so far unobserved charmed hadrons that contribute to the thermodynamics in the crossover region., Comment: The published version

We study scaling behavior of a chiral order parameter in the low density region, performing a simulation of two-flavor QCD with improved Wilson quarks. The scaling behavior of the chiral order parameter defined by a Ward-Takahashi identity agrees with the scaling function of the three-dimensional O(4) spin model at zero chemical potential. We extend the scaling study to finite density QCD. Applying the reweighting method and calculating derivatives of the chiral order parameter with respect to the chemical potential, the scaling properties of the chiral phase transition are discussed in the low density region. The analytic continuation needed for the extraction of transport coefficients necessitates in principle a continuous function of the Euclidean time variable. We report on progress towards achieving the continuum limit for 2-point correlator measurements in thermal SU(3) gauge theory, with specific attention paid to scale setting. In particular, we improve upon the determination of the critical lattice coupling and the critical temperature of pure SU(3) gauge theory, estimating r0*Tc ~ 0.7470(7) after a continuum extrapolation. As an application the determination of the heavy quark momentum diffusion coefficient from a correlator of colour-electric fields attached to a Polyakov loop is discussed., Comment: 7 pages. We study the phase structure of lattice QCD with heavy quarks at finite temperature and density by a histogram method. We determine the location of the critical point at which the first-order deconfining transition in the heavy-quark limit turns into a crossover at intermediate quark masses through a change of the shape of the histogram under variation of coupling parameters. We estimate the effect of the complex phase factor which causes the sign problem at finite density, and show that, in heavy-quark QCD, the effect is small around the critical point. We determine the critical surface in 2+1 flavor QCD in the heavy-quark region at all values of the chemical potential mu including mu=infty., Comment: 26 pages, 21 figures, 1 table

Appropriate combinations of up to fourth order cumulants of net strangeness fluctuations and their correlations with net baryon number and electric charge fluctuations, obtained from lattice QCD calculations, have been used to probe the strangeness carrying degrees of freedom at high temperatures. For temperatures up to the chiral crossover separate contributions of strange mesons and baryons can be well described by an uncorrelated gas of hadrons. Such a description breaks down in the chiral crossover region, suggesting that the deconfinement of strangeness takes place at the chiral crossover. On the other hand, the strangeness carrying degrees of freedom inside the quark gluon plasma can be described by a weakly interacting gas of quarks only for temperatures larger than twice the chiral crossover temperature. We study the phase structure of QCD at high temperature and density by lattice QCD simulations adopting a histogram method. We try to solve the problems which arise in the numerical study of the finite density QCD, focusing on the probability distribution function (histogram). As a first step, we investigate the quark mass dependence and the chemical potential dependence of the probability distribution function as a function of the Polyakov loop when all quark masses are sufficiently large, and study the properties of the distribution function. The effect from the complex phase of the quark determinant is estimated explicitly. The shape of the distribution function changes with the quark mass and the chemical potential. We investigate $U_A(1)$ breaking above $T_c$ in terms of the Dirac spectrum on configurations with (2+1)-flavors, using the HISQ action. The strange quark mass is at its physical value. We use several light quark masses corresponding to the Goldstone pion masses in the range of about 115 -- 230 MeV on lattices of size 32$^3 \times$8 and 48$^3 \times$8. We calculate the 100 lowest-lying Dirac eigenvalues at temperatures below and above $T_c$. We investigate the volume dependence of the Dirac eigenvalue density to determine whether there is a gap around zero, which can appear if $U_A(1)$ symmetry is restored in the chiral symmetric phase. Thermal stability factor (delta) of recording layer was studied in perpendicular anisotropy CoFeB/MgO magnetic tunnel junctions (p-MTJs) with various CoFeB recording layer thicknesses and junction sizes. In all series of p-MTJs with different thicknesses, delta is virtually independent of the junction sizes of 48-81 nm in diameter. The values of delta increase linearly with increasing the recording layer thickness. We extend our previous study of the QCD phase structure in the heavy quark region to non-zero chemical potentials. To identify the critical point where the first order deconfining transition terminates, we study an effective potential defined by the probability distribution function of the plaquette and the Polyakov loop. The reweighting technique is shown to be powerful in evaluating the effective potential in a wide range of the plaquette and Polyakov loop expectation values. We adopt the cumulant expansion to overcome the sign problem in the calculation of complex phase of the quark determinant. We find that the method provides us with an intuitive and powerful way to study the phase structure. Domain structures in CoFeB-MgO thin films with a perpendicular easy magnetization axis were observed by magneto-optic Kerr-effect microscopy at various temperatures. The domain wall surface energy was obtained by analyzing the spatial period of the stripe domains and fitting established domain models to the period. In combination with SQUID measurements of magnetization and anisotropy energy, this leads to an estimate of the exchange stiffness and domain wall width in these films. These parameters are essential for determining whether domain walls will form in patterned structures and devices made of such materials.

We study the equation of state in 2+1 flavor QCD with nonperturbatively improved Wilson quarks coupled with the RG-improved Iwasaki glue. We apply the $T$-integration method to nonperturbatively calculate the equation of state by the fixed-scale approach. With the fixed-scale approach, we can purely vary the temperature on a line of constant physics without changing the system size and renormalization constants. Unlike the conventional fixed-$N_t$ approach, it is easy to keep scaling violations small at low temperature in the fixed scale approach. We study 2+1 flavor QCD at light quark mass corresponding to $m_\pi/m_\rho \simeq 0.63$, while the strange quark mass is chosen around the physical point. Although the light quark masses are heavier than the physical values yet, our equation of state is roughly consistent with recent results with highly improved staggered quarks at large $N_t$., Comment: 14 pages, 12 figures, v2: Table I and Figure 3 are corrected, reference updated. Free energies between static quarks and Debye screening masses in the quark-gluon plasma are studied on the basis of Polyakov-line correlations in lattice simulations of 2+1 flavors QCD with the renormalization-group improved gluon action and the $O(a)$-improved Wilson quark action. We perform simulations at $m_{\rm PS}/m_{\rm V} = 0.63$ (0.74) for light (strange) flavors with lattice sizes of $32^3 \times N_t$ with $N_t=4$--12. We adopt the fixed-scale approach, where temperature can be varied without changing the spatial volume and renormalization factor. We find that, at short distance, the free energies of static quarks in color-singlet channel converge to the static-quark potential evaluated from the Wilson-loop at zero-temperature, in accordance with the expected insensitivity of short distance physics to the temperature. At long distance, the free energies of static quarks approach to twice the single-quark free energies, implying that the interaction between static quarks is fully screened. The screening properties can be well described by the screened Coulomb form with appropriate Casimir factor at high temperature. We propose a new approach to finite density QCD based on a histogram method with phase quenched simulations at finite chemical potential. Integrating numerically the derivatives of the logarithm of the quark determinant with respect to the chemical potential, we calculate the reweighting factor and the complex phase of the quark determinant. The complex phase is handled with a cumulant expansion to avoid the sign problem. We examine the applicability of this method., Comment: 7 pages, 11 figures

We report on the behavior of the eigenvalue distribution of the Dirac operator in (2+1)-flavor QCD at finite temperature, using the HISQ action. We calculate the eigenvalue density at several values of the temperature close to the pseudocritical temperature. For this study we use gauge field configurations generated on lattices of size $32^3 \times 8$ with two light quark masses corresponding to pion masses of about 160 and 115 MeV. We find that the eigenvalue density below $T_c$ receives large contributions from near-zero modes which become smaller as the temperature increases or the light quark mass decreases. Moreover we find no clear evidence for a gap in the eigenvalue density up to 1.1$T_c$. We study the quark mass dependence of the finite temperature QCD phase transition in the heavy quark region using an effective potential defined through the probability distribution function of the average plaquette. Performing a simulation of SU(3) pure gauge theory, we first confirm that the distribution function has two peaks indicating that the phase transition is of first order in the heavy quark limit, while the first order transition turns into a crossover as the quark mass decreases from infinity, where the mass dependence of the distribution function is evaluated by the reweighting method combined with the hopping parameter expansion. We determine the endpoint of the first order transition region for N_f=1, 2, 3 and 2+1 cases. We propose a method to evaluate spectral functions on the lattice based on a variational method. On a lattice with a finite spatial extent, spectral functions consist of discrete spectra only. Adopting a variational method, we calculate the locations and the heights of spectral functions at low-lying discrete spectra. We first test the method in the case of analytically solvable free Wilson quarks at zero and finite temperatures and confirm that the method well reproduces the analytic results for low-lying spectra. We find that we can systematically improve the results by increasing the number of trial states. We then apply the method to calculate the charmonium spectral functions for S and P-wave states at zero-temperature in quenched QCD and compare the results with those obtained using the conventional maximum entropy method (MEM). The results for the ground state are consistent with the location and the area of the first peak in spectral functions from the MEM, while the variational method leads to a mass which is closer to the experimental value for the first excited state. We also investigate the temperature dependence of the spectral functions for S-wave states below and above $T_c$. We obtain no clear evidences for dissociation of $J/\psi$ and $\eta_c$ up to 1.4$T_c$., Comment: 13 pages, 23 figures

We study scaling behavior of a chiral order parameter performing a simulation of two-flavor QCD with improved Wilson quarks. It has been shown that the scaling behavior of the chiral order parameter defined by a Ward-Takahashi identity agrees with the scaling function of the three-dimensional O(4) spin model at zero chemical potential. We extend the scaling study to finite density QCD. Calculating derivatives of the chiral order parameter with respect to the chemical potential in two-flavor QCD, the scaling property of chiral phase transition is discussed in the low density region. Recently we have reported on the magnetization dynamics of a single CrO$_2$ grain studied by micro Hall magnetometry (P. Das \textit{et al.}, Appl. Phys. Lett. \textbf{97} 042507, 2010). For the external magnetic field applied along the grain's easy magnetization direction, the magnetization reversal takes place through a series of Barkhausen jumps. Supported by micromagnetic simulations, the ground state of the grain was found to correspond to a flux closure configuration with a single cross-tie domain wall. Here, we report an analysis of the Barkhausen jumps, which were observed in the hysteresis loops for the external field applied along both the easy and hard magnetization directions. We find that the magnetization reversal takes place through only a few configuration paths in the free-energy landscape, pointing to a high purity of the sample. The anomalous Hall effect in metal-insulator-semiconductor structures having thin (Ga,Mn)As layers as a channel has been studied in a wide range of Mn and hole densities changed by the gate electric field. Strong and unanticipated temperature dependence, including a change of sign, of the anomalous Hall conductance $\sigma_{xy}$ has been found in samples with the highest Curie temperatures. For more disordered channels, the scaling relation between $\sigma_{xy}$ and $\sigma_{xx}$, similar to the one observed previously for thicker samples, is recovered., Comment: 5 pages, 5 figures

We present a new method to calculate meson spectral functions (SPFs) on the lattice based on a variational method. Because, on a finite volume lattice, the meson SPFs have discrete spectra only, a suitable way to extract such discrete signals is needed. Using a variational method, we can calculate several discrete quantities such as the position and the area of spectral peaks for low-lying states. Moreover data accuracy can be improved by increasing the number of basis functions. In this report, we first confirm our method in the free quark case and show that our method works well. Then, we apply the method to a quenched lattice QCD simulation and calculate the charmonium SPFs for S and P-waves at zero temperature. Our results for the ground state are well consistent with the position and the area of the lowest peaks of charmonium SPFs calculated by the conventional maximum entropy method. For first excited states, the signals may be reliablly extracted with our method because the charmonium mass converges to a value close to the experimental one when the number of basis functions is increased. We also investigate the SPFs for S-wave charmonia at below and above $T_c$.
