1. Identifying Telescope Usage in Astrophysics Publications: A Machine Learning Framework for Institutional Research Management at Observatories

Abstract: Large scientific institutions, such as the Space Telescope Science Institute, track the usage of their facilities to understand the needs of the research community. Astrophysicists incorporate facility usage data into their scientific publications, embedding this information in plain-text. Traditional automatic search queries prove unreliable for accurate tracking due to the misidentification of facility names in plain-text. As automatic search queries fail, researchers are required to manually classify publications for facility usage, which consumes valuable research time. In this work, we introduce a machine learning classification framework for the automatic identification of facility usage of observation sections in astrophysics publications. Our framework identifies sentences containing telescope mission keywords (e.g., Kepler and TESS) in each publication. Subsequently, the identified sentences are transformed using Term Frequency-Inverse Document Frequency and classified with a Support Vector Machine. The classification framework leverages the context surrounding the identified telescope mission keywords to provide relevant information to the classifier. The framework successfully classifies usage of MAST hosted missions with a 92.9% accuracy. Furthermore, our framework demonstrates robustness when compared to other approaches, considering common metrics and computational complexity. Abstract: Ptychography is a robust lensless form of microscopy routinely used for applications spanning life and physical sciences. The most common ptychography setup consists in using a detector to record diffraction patterns in the far-field. A near-field version has been more recently introduced, and its potential is yet to be fully exploited. In this work, the sampling requirements for near-field ptychography are analysed. Starting from the characterisation available in literature, the formalism of the fractional Fourier transform is used to generalise analytically the sampling conditions. The results harmonise the far- and near-field regimes and widen the applications of the technique with respect to the current knowledge. This study is supported by simulations and provides clear guidelines on how to optimise the setup and acquisition strategies for near-field ptychography experiments. The results are key to drive the translation of the technique towards low brilliance sources.

3. Fabrication of Ultra-Thick Masks for X-ray Phase Contrast Imaging at Higher Energy

Abstract: X-ray phase contrast imaging (XPCI) provides higher sensitivity to contrast between low absorbing objects that can be invisible to conventional attenuation-based X-ray imaging. XPCI's main application has been so far focused on medical areas at relatively low energies (< 100 keV). The translation to higher energy for industrial applications, where energies above 150 keV are often needed, is hindered by the lack of masks/gratings with sufficiently thick gold septa. Fabricating such structures with apertures of tens of micrometers becomes difficult at depths greater than a few hundreds of micrometers due to aspect ratio dependent effects such as anisotropic etching, and preferential gold (Au) deposition at the top of the apertures. In this work, these difficulties are overcome by Deep Reactive Ion Etching optimized by a stepped parameters approach and bismuth-mediated superconformal filling of Au, ultimately resulting in 500 micrometers deep silicon masks filled with Au at bulk density. The obtained masks, tested in an Edge Illumination XPCI system with a conventional source and a photon-counting detector, show good agreement with simulations at different energy thresholds. They also demonstrate a higher phase sensitivity for highly absorbing objects when compared to lower aspect ratio masks, proving their potential for industrial non-destructive testing., Comment: 6 figure plus table of content at the end

4. Electronvolt energy resolution with broadband ptychography

Abstract: Ptychography is a scanning coherent diffraction imaging technique successfully applied in the electron, visible and x-ray regimes. One of the distinct features of ptychography with respect to other coherent diffraction techniques is its capability of dealing with partial spatial and temporal coherence via the reconstruction algorithm. Here we focus on the temporal and clarify the constraints which affect the energy resolution limits of the ptychographic algorithms. Based on this, we design and perform simulations for a broadband ptychography in the hard x-ray regime, which enables an energy resolution down to 1 eV. We benchmark the simulations against experimental ptychographic data of an NMC battery cathode material, attaining an energy resolution of 5 eV. We review the results, discuss the limitations, and provide guidelines for future broadband ptychography experiments, its prospective application for single acquisition x-ray absorption near edge structure imaging, magnetic dichroism imaging, and potential impact on achieving diffraction limited resolutions.

5. Prospective Narratives on Global Issues: An AI-Based Pedagogical Model for Assessing Complex Thinking

Abstract: This study proposes a narrative pedagogical model for creating and developing case studies that highlight the challenges and issues surrounding the megatrends of the Fourth Industrial Revolution, specifically "People and the Internet." This proposal, framed in an online learning environment, represents the second stage of an educational platform to guide university students in facilitating an ideathon to address the megatrends of the 4th Industrial Revolution. Designing a model for case study creation related to the megatrends aims to foster complex thinking in university students, especially innovative thinking, a sub-competency of complex thinking. Fostering complex thinking highlights the importance of cognitive, practical, and adaptive skills to address interdisciplinary challenges. The Design Process and Practice Methodology and the case study methodology facilitated the narrative case study design model. The outcome of this study is a tangible product that enriches the debates on education and complex systems thinking in the context of the Fourth Industrial Revolution.

Abstract: Results are presented for the measurement of large-scale anisotropies in the arrival directions of ultra-high-energy cosmic rays detected at the Pierre Auger Observatory during 19 years of operation, prior to AugerPrime, the upgrade of the Observatory. The 3D dipole amplitude and direction are reconstructed above $4\,$EeV in four energy bins. Besides the established dipolar anisotropy in right ascension above $8\,$EeV, the Fourier amplitude of the $8$ to $16\,$EeV energy bin is now also above the $5\sigma$ discovery level. No time variation of the dipole moment above $8\,$EeV is found, setting an upper limit to the rate of change of such variations of $0.3\%$ per year at the $95\%$ confidence level. Additionally, the results for the angular power spectrum are shown, demonstrating no other statistically significant multipoles. The results for the equatorial dipole component down to $0.03\,$EeV are presented, using for the first time a data set obtained with a trigger that has been optimized for lower energies. Finally, model predictions are discussed and compared with observations, based on two source emission scenarios obtained in the combined fit of spectrum and composition above $0.6\,$EeV., Comment: Minor modifications, accepted for publication in Astrophysical Journal

7. Deep ContourFlow: Advancing Active Contours with Deep Learning

Abstract: This paper introduces a novel approach that combines unsupervised active contour models with deep learning for robust and adaptive image segmentation. Indeed, traditional active contours, provide a flexible framework for contour evolution and learning offers the capacity to learn intricate features and patterns directly from raw data. Our proposed methodology leverages the strengths of both paradigms, presenting a framework for both unsupervised and one-shot approaches for image segmentation. It is capable of capturing complex object boundaries without the need for extensive labeled training data. This is particularly required in histology, a field facing a significant shortage of annotations due to the challenging and time-consuming nature of the annotation process. We illustrate and compare our results to state of the art methods on a histology dataset and show significant improvements., Comment: 11 pages, 12 figures

Abstract: Ultra-high-energy cosmic rays are known to be mainly of extragalactic origin, and their propagation is limited by energy losses, so their arrival directions are expected to correlate with the large-scale structure of the local Universe. In this work, we investigate the possible presence of intermediate-scale excesses in the flux of the most energetic cosmic rays from the direction of the supergalactic plane region using events with energies above 20 EeV recorded with the surface detector array of the Pierre Auger Observatory up to 31 December 2022, with a total exposure of 135,000 km^2 sr yr. The strongest indication for an excess that we find, with a post-trial significance of 3.1{\sigma}, is in the Centaurus region, as in our previous reports, and it extends down to lower energies than previously studied. We do not find any strong hints of excesses from any other region of the supergalactic plane at the same angular scale. In particular, our results do not confirm the reports by the Telescope Array collaboration of excesses from two regions in the Northern Hemisphere at the edge of the field of view of the Pierre Auger Observatory. Abstract: The Pierre Auger Observatory is the most sensitive instrument to detect photons with energies above $10^{17}$ eV. It measures extensive air showers generated by ultra high energy cosmic rays using a hybrid technique that exploits the combination of a fluorescence detector with a ground array of particle detectors. The signatures of a photon-induced air shower are a larger atmospheric depth of the shower maximum ($X_{max}$) and a steeper lateral distribution function, along with a lower number of muons with respect to the bulk of hadron-induced cascades. In this work, a new analysis technique in the energy interval between 1 and 30 EeV (1 EeV = $10^{18}$ eV) has been developed by combining the fluorescence detector-based measurement of $X_{max}$ with the specific features of the surface detector signal through a parameter related to the air shower muon content, derived from the universality of the air shower development. No evidence of a statistically significant signal due to photon primaries was found using data collected in about 12 years of operation. Thus, upper bounds to the integral photon flux have been set using a detailed calculation of the detector exposure, in combination with a data-driven background estimation. The derived 95% confidence level upper limits are 0.0403, 0.01113, 0.0035, 0.0023, and 0.0021 km$^{-2}$ sr$^{-1}$ yr$^{-1}$ above 1, 2, 3, 5, and 10 EeV, respectively, leading to the most stringent upper limits on the photon flux in the EeV range. Compared with past results, the upper limits were improved by about 40% for the lowest energy threshold and by a factor 3 above 3 EeV, where no candidates were found and the expected background is negligible. The presented limits can be used to probe the assumptions on chemical composition of ultra-high energy cosmic rays and allow for the constraint of the mass and lifetime phase space of super-heavy dark matter particles., Comment: 19 pages, 22 figures

Abstract: We report an investigation of the mass composition of cosmic rays with energies from 3 to 100 EeV (1 EeV=$10^{18}$ eV) using the distributions of the depth of shower maximum $X_\mathrm{max}$. The analysis relies on ${\sim}50,000$ events recorded by the Surface Detector of the Pierre Auger Observatory and a deep-learning-based reconstruction algorithm. Above energies of 5 EeV, the data set offers a 10-fold increase in statistics with respect to fluorescence measurements at the Observatory. After cross-calibration using the Fluorescence Detector, this enables the first measurement of the evolution of the mean and the standard deviation of the $X_\mathrm{max}$ distributions up to 100 EeV. Our findings are threefold: (1.) The evolution of the mean logarithmic mass towards a heavier composition with increasing energy can be confirmed and is extended to 100 EeV. (2.) The evolution of the fluctuations of $X_\mathrm{max}$ towards a heavier and purer composition with increasing energy can be confirmed with high statistics. We report a rather heavy composition and small fluctuations in $X_\mathrm{max}$ at the highest energies. (3.) We find indications for a characteristic structure beyond a constant change in the mean logarithmic mass, featuring three breaks that are observed in proximity to the ankle, instep, and suppression features in the energy spectrum., Comment: submitted to Phys. Abstract: We present measurements of the atmospheric depth of the shower maximum $X_\mathrm{max}$, inferred for the first time on an event-by-event level using the Surface Detector of the Pierre Auger Observatory. Using deep learning, we were able to extend measurements of the $X_\mathrm{max}$ distributions up to energies of 100 EeV ($10^{20}$ eV), not yet revealed by current measurements, providing new insights into the mass composition of cosmic rays at extreme energies. Gaining a 10-fold increase in statistics compared to the Fluorescence Detector data, we find evidence that the rate of change of the average $X_\mathrm{max}$ with the logarithm of energy features three breaks at $6.5\pm0.6~(\mathrm{stat})\pm1~(\mathrm{sys})$ EeV, $11\pm 2~(\mathrm{stat})\pm1~(\mathrm{sys})$ EeV, and $31\pm5~(\mathrm{stat})\pm3~(\mathrm{sys})$ EeV, in the vicinity to the three prominent features (ankle, instep, suppression) of the cosmic-ray flux. The energy evolution of the mean and standard deviation of the measured $X_\mathrm{max}$ distributions indicates that the mass composition becomes increasingly heavier and purer, thus being incompatible with a large fraction of light nuclei between 50 EeV and 100 EeV., Comment: submitted to Phys. Abstract: Millicharged particles, proposed by various extensions of the standard model, can be created in pairs by high-energy photons within nuclear reactors and can interact electromagnetically with electrons in matter. Recently, the existence of a plasmon peak in the interaction cross-section with silicon in the eV range was highlighted as a promising approach to enhance low-energy sensitivities. The CONNIE and Atucha-II reactor neutrino experiments utilize Skipper-CCD sensors, which enable the detection of interactions in the eV range. Abstract: We present the first proof-of-concept application to decay processes at higher perturbative orders of LTD causal unitary, a novel methodology that exploits the causal properties of vacuum amplitudes in the loop-tree duality (LTD) and is directly well-defined in the four physical dimensions of the space-time. The generation of loop- and tree-level contributions to the differential decay rates from a kernel multiloop vacuum amplitude is shown in detail, and explicit expressions are presented for selected processes that are suitable for a lightweight understanding of the method. Specifically, we provide a clear physical interpretation of the local cancellation of soft, collinear and unitary threshold singularities, and of the local renormalisation of ultraviolet singularities. 14. Quantum querying based on multicontrolled Toffoli gates for causal Feynman loop configurations and directed acyclic graphs

Abstract: Quantum algorithms are a promising framework for a proper treatment of Feynman loop integrals due to the existence of a manifestly causal representation scenario. Particularly, unfolding causal configurations of multiloop Feynman diagrams is understood as querying \textit{directed acyclic graph} (DAG) configurations of undirected graphs in graph theory. In this paper we present a quantum algorithm for querying causality of multiloop Feynman diagrams using an ingenious change in the logic of the design of the oracle operator. The construction of the quantum oracle is surprisingly based exclusively on multicontrolled Toffoli gates and XNOT gates. The efficiency of the algorithm is evaluated performing a comparison with a quantum algorithm based on binary clauses. Abstract: The flux of ultra-high energy cosmic rays reaching Earth above the ankle energy (5 EeV) can be described as a mixture of nuclei injected by extragalactic sources with very hard spectra and a low rigidity cutoff. Extragalactic magnetic fields existing between the Earth and the closest sources can affect the observed CR spectrum by reducing the flux of low-rigidity particles reaching Earth. We perform a combined fit of the spectrum and distributions of depth of shower maximum measured with the Pierre Auger Observatory including the effect of this magnetic horizon in the propagation of UHECRs in the intergalactic space. We find that, within a specific range of the various experimental and phenomenological systematics, the magnetic horizon effect can be relevant for turbulent magnetic field strengths in the local neighbourhood of order $B_{\rm rms}\simeq (50-100)\,{\rm nG}\,(20\rm{Mpc}/{d_{\rm s})( 100\,\rm{kpc}/L_{\rm coh}})^{1/2}$, with $d_{\rm s}$ the typical intersource separation and $L_{\rm coh}$ the magnetic field coherence length. When this is the case, the inferred slope of the source spectrum becomes softer and can be closer to the expectations of diffusive shock acceleration, i.e., $\propto E^{-2}$. An additional cosmic-ray population with higher source density and softer spectra, presumably also extragalactic and dominating the cosmic-ray flux at EeV energies, is also required to reproduce the overall spectrum and composition results for all energies down to 0.6~EeV., Comment: Matches published version

Abstract: The Coherent Neutrino-Nucleus Interaction Experiment (CONNIE) aims to detect the coherent scattering (CE$\nu$NS) of reactor antineutrinos off silicon nuclei using thick fully-depleted high-resistivity silicon CCDs. Two Skipper-CCD sensors with sub-electron readout noise capability were installed at the experiment next to the Angra-2 reactor in 2021, making CONNIE the first experiment to employ Skipper-CCDs for reactor neutrino detection. We report on the performance of the Skipper-CCDs, the new data processing and data quality selection techniques and the event selection for CE$\nu$NS interactions, which enable CONNIE to reach a record low detection threshold of 15 eV. The data were collected over 300 days in 2021-2022 and correspond to exposures of 14.9 g-days with the reactor-on and 3.5 g-days with the reactor-off. The difference between the reactor-on and off event rates shows no excess and yields upper limits at 95% confidence level for the neutrino interaction rates comparable with previous CONNIE limits from standard CCDs and higher exposures. Searches for new neutrino interactions beyond the Standard Model were performed, yielding an improvement on the previous CONNIE limit on a simplified model with light vector mediators. A first dark matter (DM) search by diurnal modulation was performed by CONNIE and the results represent the best limits on the DM-electron scattering cross-section, obtained by a surface-level experiment. These promising results, obtained using a very small-mass sensor, illustrate the potential of Skipper-CCDs to probe rare neutrino interactions and motivate the plans to increase the detector mass in the near future.

Abstract: This paper proposes a dynamic interactive and weakly supervised segmentation method with minimal user interactions to address two major challenges in the segmentation of whole slide histopathology images. First, the lack of hand-annotated datasets to train algorithms. Second, the lack of interactive paradigms to enable a dialogue between the pathologist and the machine, which can be a major obstacle for use in clinical routine. We therefore propose a fast and user oriented method to bridge this gap by giving the pathologist control over the final result while limiting the number of interactions needed to achieve a good result (over 90\% on all our metrics with only 4 correction scribbles).

Abstract: We test the predictions of hadronic interaction models regarding the depth of maximum of air-shower profiles, $X_{max}$, and ground-particle signals in water-Cherenkov detectors at 1000 m from the shower core, $S(1000)$, using the data from the fluorescence and surface detectors of the Pierre Auger Observatory. The test consists in fitting the measured two-dimensional ($S(1000)$, $X_{max}$) distributions using templates for simulated air showers produced with hadronic interaction models EPOS-LHC, QGSJet II-04, Sibyll 2.3d and leaving the scales of predicted $X_{max}$ and the signals from hadronic component at ground as free fit parameters. The method relies on the assumption that the mass composition remains the same at all zenith angles, while the longitudinal shower development and attenuation of ground signal depend on the mass composition in a correlated way. The analysis was applied to 2239 events detected by both the fluorescence and surface detectors of the Pierre Auger Observatory with energies between $10^{18.5}$ to $10^{19.0}$ eV and zenith angles below $60^\circ$. We found, that within the assumptions of the method, the best description of the data is achieved if the predictions of the hadronic interaction models are shifted to deeper $X_{max}$ values and larger hadronic signals at all zenith angles. 21. Surface recoil force on dielectric nano--particles enhancement via graphene acoustic surface plasmons excitation: non--local effects consideration

Abstract: Controlling opto--mechanical interactions at sub--wavelength levels is of great importance in academic science and nano--particle manipulation technologies. This letter focuses on the improvement of the recoil force on nano--particles placed close to a graphene--dielectric--metal structure. The momentum conservation involving the non--symmetric excitation of acoustic surface plasmons (ASPs), via near field circularly polarized dipolar scattering, % induced by the circular dipole moment on the nano--particle, implies the occurrence of a huge momentum kick on the nano--particle. Owing to the high wave--vector values entailed in the near field scattering process, it has been necessary to consider %apply the non--locality of the graphene electrical conductivity to explore the influence of the scattering loss on this large--wave--vector region, which is neglected by the semi--classical model. Surprisingly, %our results show that %, \textcolor{red}{depending on the particle position and the dielectric thickness layer}, the contribution of ASPs to the recoil force %can be is negligibly modified when the non--local effects are incorporated through the graphene conductivity. On the contrary, our results show that the contribution of the non--local scattering loss to this force becomes dominant when the particle is placed very close to the graphene sheet and that it is mostly independent of the dielectric thickness layer. Our work can be helpful for designing new and better performing large--plasmon momentum opto--mechanical structures using scattering highly dependent of the polarization for moving dielectric nano--particles.

Abstract: BACKGROUND: Artemisinin resistance in Plasmodium falciparum threatens global malaria elimination efforts. To contain and then eliminate artemisinin resistance in Eastern Myanmar a network of community-based malaria posts was instituted and targeted mass drug administration (MDA) with dihydroartemisinin-piperaquine (three rounds at monthly intervals) was conducted. The prevalence of artemisinin resistance during the elimination campaign (2013-2019) was characterized. METHODS: Throughout the six-year campaign Plasmodium falciparum positive blood samples from symptomatic patients and from cross-sectional surveys were genotyped for mutations in kelch-13-a molecular marker of artemisinin resistance. RESULT: The program resulted in near elimination of falciparum malaria. Of 5162 P. falciparum positive blood samples genotyped, 3281 (63.6%) had K13 mutations. Abstract: We present results from a 3.25 kg-day target exposure of two silicon charge-coupled devices (CCDs), each with 24 megapixels and skipper readout, deployed in the DAMIC setup at SNOLAB. With a reduction in pixel readout noise of a factor of 10 relative to the previous detector, we investigate the excess population of low-energy events in the CCD bulk previously observed above expected backgrounds. We address the dominant systematic uncertainty of the previous analysis through a depth fiducialization designed to reject surface backgrounds on the CCDs. The measured bulk ionization spectrum confirms the presence of an excess population of low-energy events in the CCD target with characteristic rate of ∼7 events per kg-day and electron-equivalent energies of ∼80 eV, whose origin remains unknown.

24. A laboratory-based X-ray phase contrast microscopy system for targeting in unstained soft-tissue samples

Abstract: We propose an imaging system and methodology for mapping soft-tissue samples in three dimensions, with micron-scale and isotropic spatial resolution, with low-concentrations as well as in the absence of heavy metal staining. We used hard X-ray phase-contrast imaging for the X-ray ability to non-destructively probe the internal structure of opaque specimens and for enhanced contrast obtained by exploiting phase effects, even in cases with reduced or absent staining agents. To demonstrate its applicability to soft-tissue specimens, we built a compact system that is easily deployable in a laboratory setting. The imaging system is based on a conventional rotating anode X-ray tube and a state-of-the-art custom-made radiation detector. The system's performance is quantitatively assessed on a calibration standard. Its potential for soft-tissue microscopy is demonstrated on two biological specimens and benchmarked against gold-standard synchrotron data. We believe that the approach proposed here can be valuable as a bridging imaging modality for intravital correlative light electron microscopy and be applied across disciplines where the three-dimensional morphology of pristine-condition soft tissues is a key element of the investigation.

Abstract: Two-directional beam-tracking (2DBT) is a method for phase-contrast imaging and tomography that uses an intensity modulator to structure the X-ray beam into an array of independent circular beamlets that are resolved by a high-resolution detector. It features isotropic spatial resolution, provides two-dimensional phase sensitivity, and enables the three-dimensional reconstructions of the refractive index decrement, $\delta$, and the attenuation coefficient, $\mu$. In this work, we report on the angular sensitivity and the spatial resolution of 2DBT images in a synchrotron-based implementation. In its best configuration, we obtained angular sensitivities of $\sim$20 $n$rad and spatial resolution of at least 6.25 $\mu$m in phase-contrast images. We also demonstrate exemplar application to the three-dimensional imaging of soft tissue samples, including a mouse liver and a decellularised porcine dermis.

This report focuses on the conditions and guiding actions to foster authentic school-family partnerships. Research confirms that school-family partnerships are crucial. While much attention has been given to the core competencies, our new innovations series digs deeper into the "rings" of CASEL's SEL Framework where young people live and learn, beginning with school-family partnerships. The report offers case studies illustrating four guiding actions in practice, featuring Communities in Schools of Michigan, The Allegheny County Family Center Network's Parent Advisory Council, Village of Wisdom, and Minneapolis Public Schools Parent Participatory Evaluation Initiative. The report includes these guiding actions for school staff: (1) Begin with family priorities, interests, concerns, knowledge, and resources to create opportunities for building trust and genuine relationships; (2) Transform power dynamics by increasing the capacity of both families and staff around knowledge and confidence; (3) Build reciprocity and agency between school staff and families by setting up systems and structures that foster a sense of camaraderie and collaboration; and (4) Undertake change as collective inquiry together using the relationships that are built as a way to collaboratively problem-solve.

Abstract: Dark matter particles could be superheavy, provided their lifetime is much longer than the age of the universe. Using the sensitivity of the Pierre Auger Observatory to ultra-high energy neutrinos and photons, we constrain a specific extension of the Standard Model of particle physics that meets the lifetime requirement for a superheavy particle by coupling it to a sector of ultra-light sterile neutrinos. Our results show that, for a typical dark coupling constant of 0.1, the mixing angle $\theta_m$ between active and sterile neutrinos must satisfy, roughly, $\theta_m \lesssim 1.5\times 10^{-6}(M_X/10^9~\mathrm{GeV})^{-2}$ for a mass $M_X$ of the dark-matter particle between $10^8$ and $10^{11}~$GeV., Comment: Version accepted for publication in PRD Letters, including Supplemental Material

Abstract: The Fermilab Proton-Improvement-Plan-II (PIP-II) is being implemented in order to support the precision neutrino oscillation measurements at the Deep Underground Neutrino Experiment, the U.S. flagship neutrino experiment. The PIP-II LINAC is presently under construction and is expected to provide 800~MeV protons with 2~mA current. This white paper summarizes the outcome of the first workshop on May 10 through 13, 2023, to exploit this capability for new physics opportunities in the kinematic regime that are unavailable to other facilities, in particular a potential beam dump facility implemented at the end of the LINAC. Various new physics opportunities have been discussed in a wide range of kinematic regime, from eV scale to keV and MeV. We also emphasize that the timely establishment of the beam dump facility at Fermilab is essential to exploit these new physics opportunities.

Abstract: The Auger Engineering Radio Array (AERA), part of the Pierre Auger Observatory, is currently the largest array of radio antenna stations deployed for the detection of cosmic rays, spanning an area of $17$ km$^2$ with 153 radio stations. It detects the radio emission of extensive air showers produced by cosmic rays in the $30-80$ MHz band. Here, we report the AERA measurements of the depth of the shower maximum ($X_\text{max}$), a probe for mass composition, at cosmic-ray energies between $10^{17.5}$ to $10^{18.8}$ eV, which show agreement with earlier measurements with the fluorescence technique at the Pierre Auger Observatory. We show advancements in the method for radio $X_\text{max}$ reconstruction by comparison to dedicated sets of CORSIKA/CoREAS air-shower simulations, including steps of reconstruction-bias identification and correction, which is of particular importance for irregular or sparse radio arrays. Using the largest set of radio air-shower measurements to date, we show the radio $X_\text{max}$ resolution as a function of energy, reaching a resolution better than $15$ g cm$^{-2}$ at the highest energies, demonstrating that radio $X_\text{max}$ measurements are competitive with the established high-precision fluorescence technique. In addition, we developed a procedure for performing an extensive data-driven study of systematic uncertainties, including the effects of acceptance bias, reconstruction bias, and the investigation of possible residual biases. Abstract: We show, for the first time, radio measurements of the depth of shower maximum ($X_\text{max}$) of air showers induced by cosmic rays that are compared to measurements of the established fluorescence method at the same location. Using measurements at the Pierre Auger Observatory we show full compatibility between our radio and the previously published fluorescence data set, and between a subset of air showers observed simultaneously with both radio and fluorescence techniques, a measurement setup unique to the Pierre Auger Observatory. Furthermore, we show radio $X_\text{max}$ resolution as a function of energy and demonstrate the ability to make competitive high-resolution $X_\text{max}$ measurements with even a sparse radio array. Abstract: The wind mission Aeolus of the European Space Agency was a groundbreaking achievement for Earth observation. Between 2018 and 2023, the space-borne lidar instrument ALADIN onboard the Aeolus satellite measured atmospheric wind profiles with global coverage which contributed to improving the accuracy of numerical weather prediction. The precision of the wind observations, however, declined over the course of the mission due to a progressive loss of the atmospheric backscatter signal. The analysis of the root cause was supported by the Pierre Auger Observatory in Argentina whose fluorescence detector registered the ultraviolet laser pulses emitted from the instrument in space, thereby offering an estimation of the laser energy at the exit of the instrument for several days in 2019, 2020 and 2021. The reconstruction of the laser beam not only allowed for an independent assessment of the Aeolus performance, but also helped to improve the accuracy in the determination of the laser beam's ground track on single pulse level. The results presented in this paper set a precedent for the monitoring of space lasers by ground-based telescopes and open new possibilities for the calibration of cosmic-ray observatories., Comment: 10 pages, 10 figures

Abstract: The Pierre Auger Collaboration has embraced the concept of open access to their research data since its foundation, with the aim of giving access to the widest possible community. A gradual process of release began as early as 2007 when 1% of the cosmic-ray data was made public, along with 100% of the space-weather information. In February 2021, a portal was released containing 10% of cosmic-ray data collected from 2004 to 2018, during Phase I of the Observatory. The Portal included detailed documentation about the detection and reconstruction procedures, analysis codes that can be easily used and modified and, additionally, visualization tools. Since then the Portal has been updated and extended. In 2023, a catalog of the 100 highest-energy cosmic-ray events examined in depth has been included. A specific section dedicated to educational use has been developed with the expectation that these data will be explored by a wide and diverse community including professional and citizen-scientists, and used for educational and outreach initiatives. 42. Multi-contrast x-ray identification of inhomogeneous materials and their discrimination through deep learning approaches

Abstract: Recent innovations in x-ray technology (namely phase-based and energy-resolved imaging) offer unprecedented opportunities for material discrimination, however they are often used in isolation or in limited combinations. Here we show that the optimized combination of contrast channels (attenuation at three x-ray energies, ultra-small angle scattering at two, standard deviation of refraction) significantly enhances material identification abilities compared to dual-energy x-ray imaging alone, and that a combination of off-the-shelf machine learning approaches can effectively discriminate e.g., threat materials in complex datasets. The methodology is validated on a range of materials and image dataset that are both an order of magnitude larger than those used in previous studies. Our results can provide an effective methodology to discriminate, and in some cases identify, different materials in complex imaging scenarios, with prospective applications across the life and physical sciences. Abstract: Operating since 2004, the Pierre Auger Observatory has led to major advances in our understanding of the ultra-high-energy cosmic rays. The latest findings have revealed new insights that led to the upgrade of the Observatory, with the primary goal of obtaining information on the primary mass of the most energetic cosmic rays on a shower-by-shower basis. In the framework of the upgrade, called AugerPrime, the 1660 water-Cherenkov detectors of the surface array are equipped with plastic scintillators and radio antennas, allowing us to enhance the composition sensitivity. To accommodate new detectors and to increase experimental capabilities, the electronics is also upgraded. This includes better timing with up-to-date GPS receivers, higher sampling frequency, increased dynamic range, and more powerful local processing of the data. In this paper, the design characteristics of the new electronics and the enhanced dynamic range will be described. The manufacturing and test processes will be outlined and the test results will be discussed. The calibration of the SD detector and various performance parameters obtained from the analysis of the first commissioning data will also be presented.

Abstract: A solution to the MiniBooNE excess invoking rare three-body decays of the charged pions and kaons to new states in the MeV mass scale was recently proposed as a dark-sector explanation. This class of solution illuminates the fact that, while the charged pions were focused in the target-mode run, their decay products were isotropically suppressed in the beam-dump-mode run in which no excess was observed. This suggests a new physics solution correlated to the mesonic sector. We investigate an extended set of phenomenological models that can explain the MiniBooNE excess as a dark sector solution, utilizing long-lived particles that might be produced in the three-body decays of the charged mesons and the two-body anomalous decays of the neutral mesons. Over a broad set of interactions with the long-lived particles, we show that these scenarios can be compatible with constraints from LSND, KARMEN, and MicroBooNE, and evaluate the sensitivity of the ongoing and future data taken by the Coherent CAPTAIN Mills experiment (CCM) to a potential discovery in this parameter space., Comment: Corrected sensitivity plot for Fig 7 (right); corrected normalization scale on Fig 13 (right)

46. Acetylcholinesterase inhibition exerted by the extract of Daldinia eschscholtzii, a marine fungus associated with the coral Siderastrea siderea: GC-MS analysis and molecular docking of identified compounds

Abstract: Background: Alzheimer’s disease is a neurodegenerative disease that has no cure. The drugs used to treat Alzheimer’s disease are based on the inhibition of the enzyme acetylcholinesterase (AChE). In this sense, marine fungal metabolites represent an alternative source for the discovery of drugs based on AChE inhibition (IAChE). The present research carried out a bioprospecting study of marine fungi with acetylcholinesterase inhibition potential. Results: A total of 17 marine fungi were isolated from three stony corals from the Veracruz Reef System. The fungal genera identified were Geotrichum, Curvularia, Penicillium, Aspergillus, and Daldinia. The IAChE was evaluated from the broth and biomass extracts of each fungal strain. As a result, Daldinia eschscholtzii was one of the three fungi with the greatest IAChE effect (32.7%). Subsequently, a bio-directed chromatographic purification of the methanolic extract of the biomass of D. eschscholtzii was carried out. The FRL8.1 fraction was the most active with an IAChE of 41.0%, a value close to Galantamine positive control (44.0%). Furthermore, compound analysis was carried out by GC-MS. Finally, it was determined that the metabolites responsible for the inhibitory effect are probably 4,7-dihydroxycoumarin and 5-nitro-2-naphthalenamine, which was demonstrated by their interactions with the AChE enzyme receptor through molecular docking studies. Conclusions: Coral-associated marine fungi produce secondary metabolites that inhibit acetylcholinesterase. This is the first report of D. eschscholtzii isolated from the stony coral Siderastrea siderea. 47. Champions to enhance implementation of clinical and community-based interventions in cancer: a scoping review

Abstract: Abstract Background Champions are integral across research in cancer, yet studies exploring their roles are limited and have produced mixed results. The current review examines and synthesizes descriptions of how champions emerged and the types of activities they most often performed. By examining evidence from across the translational research continuum, this scoping review aims to characterize the role of champions and strategies that facilitate their involvement in the implementation of cancer care interventions in both clinical and community-based settings. Methods This scoping review was designed and implemented in compliance with PRISMA-ScR. The review focused on peer-reviewed articles in English-language journals. We searched five databases: PubMed (including MEDLINE), Scopus (including EMBASE), CINAHL, PsycINFO, and the Cochrane Library. Articles published from 1971 to 2022 were included. Two members of the team reviewed in duplicate each article and then a single member of the team extracted the data in Covidence, with a second member comparing the extraction to the original article. Qualitative and quantitative data were extracted and then synthesized. These data were used to summarize core champion activities and implementation strategies and to characterize barriers and facilitators to using champions in research. Results A total of 74 articles were included in the review. The qualitative synthesis highlighted facilitators and barriers to the effective use of champions. Facilitators included consideration of an individual’s characteristics when identifying champions, time spent planning for the specific responsibilities of champions, working within a supportive environment, and identifying champions embedded in the target setting. Major barriers included constrained time, low self-efficacy among champions, inadequate training, high turnover rates of champions, and a lack of buy-in from organizational leadership toward the intervention. Champions also were mostly assigned their roles, had varied core activities, and used complementary strategies to empower their target populations. Champions’ most frequent core activities include facilitation, outreach/promotion, and recruitment of participants into studies. Conclusions Champions were used in research of many cancer types and often serve similar roles regardless of where they are located within the translational research process. Despite their critical role, evidence is lacking on the impact of champions specifically on outcomes of many of the research studies that include them. Future research is needed to understand the nuances of champion-driven approaches across diverse cancer care settings.

Abstract: Abstract Background The thymus, responsible for T cell-mediated adaptive immune system, has a structural and functional complexity that is not yet fully understood. Until now, thymic anatomy has been studied using histological thin sections or confocal microscopy 3D reconstruction, necessarily for limited volumes. Methods We used Phase Contrast X-Ray Computed Tomography to address the lack of whole-organ volumetric information on the microarchitecture of its structural components. We scanned 15 human thymi (9 foetal and 6 postnatal) with synchrotron radiation, and repeated scans using a conventional laboratory x-ray system. We used histology, immunofluorescence and flow cytometry to validate the x-ray findings. Results Application to human thymi at pre- and post-natal stages allowed reliable tracking and quantification of the evolution of parameters such as size and distribution of Hassall’s Bodies and medulla-to-cortex ratio, whose changes reflect adaptation of thymic activity. We show that Hassall’s bodies can occupy 25% of the medulla volume, indicating they should be considered a third thymic compartment with possible implications on their role. Moreover, we demonstrate compatible results can be obtained with standard laboratory-based x-ray equipment, making this research tool accessible to a wider community. Conclusions Our study allows overcoming the resolution and/or volumetric limitations of existing approaches for the study of thymic disfunction in congenital and acquired disorders affecting the adaptive immune system.

Abstract: In recent years, the combination of pedagogy and technology has revolutionized education, providing teachers with innovative tools to transform their work in the classroom. With the aim of transforming and improving the teaching of subjects related to technical and programming concepts, it was decided to develop a virtual reality (VR) tool to address the challenge of ensuring that students acquire, understand, and can effectively apply knowledge in practice through the TPACK model. The approach applied for this research was quantitative, supported by an applied experimental design and a convenience sample of 49 students from the Faculty of Informatics at the Autonomous University of Querétaro, Mexico. Likert scale surveys were conducted to measure the improvement and transformation of teaching through the virtual tool and the TPACK model. The results demonstrated that the strategy of using VR for teachers to provide students with a platform featuring game mechanics helps transform and improve learning. It was also concluded that one of the greatest strengths of this tool is that it removes the user from the traditional classroom, mitigating pressure or negative predisposition towards unknown or difficult-to-understand concepts.

50. Reliability and usability of a novel inertial sensor-based system to test craniocervical flexion movement control

Abstract: Abstract Background Neck pain has a significant global impact, ranking as the fourth leading cause of disability. Recurrent neck pain often leads to impaired sensorimotor control, particularly in craniocervical flexion (CFF). The Craniocervical Flexion Test (CCFT) has been widely investigated to assess the performance of deep cervical flexor muscles. However, its use requires skilled assessors who need to subjectively detect compensations, progressive increases in range of motion (ROM) or excessive superficial flexor activation during the test. The aim of this study was to design and develop a novel Craniocervical Flexion Movement Control Test (CFMCT) based on inertial sensor technology and real-time computer feedback and to evaluate its safety and usability, as well as inter and intra-rater reliability in both healthy individuals and patients with neck pain. Methods We used inertial sensor technology associated with new software that provides real-time computer feedback to assess CCF movement control through two independent test protocols, the progressive consecutive stages protocol (including progressive incremental stages of ROM) and the random stages protocol (providing dynamic and less predictable movement patterns). We determined intra and inter-rater reliability and standard error of the measurement for both protocols. The participants rated their usability was analysed through the System Usability Scale (SUS) and possible secondary effects associated with the tests were registered. Results The progressive consecutive stages protocol and the random stages protocol were safe and easy to use (SUS scores of 82.00 ± 11.55 in the pain group and 79.56 ± 13.36 in the asymptomatic group). The progressive consecutive stages protocol demonstrated good inter-rater reliability (intraclass correlation coefficient [ICC] ≥ 0.75) and moderate to good intra-rater reliability (ICC 0.62–0.80). However, the random stages protocol exhibited lower intra-rater reliability, especially in the neck pain group, where the reliability values were poor in some cases (ICC 0.48–0.72). Conclusion The CFMCT (progressive consecutive stages protocol) is a promising instrument to evaluate CCF motor control in patients with chronic neck pain. It has potential for telehealth assessment and easy adherence for exercise prescription and seems to be a safe and usable tool for patients with pain and asymptomatic individuals. Its use as a test or for exercise needs to be further investigated to facilitate its transfer to clinical practice.
