The prose poems in Judith Gautier's Livre de Jade (1867) are almost always explored through a comparison with the classical Chinese poetry from which the author drew inspiration. This article seeks other ways of approaching the volume; therefore, we trace the history of Gautier's inscription in the prose poem tradition and resort to the author's production as an art critic to analyze what is in the anthology beyond its source of inspiration. Though many historical accounts of Western Imperialism and Colonialism have been written by now, most of these works have tended to focus upon the conquest of territorial space. This paper looks at another, under-studied, dimension of colonial expansionism in Southeast Asia, and will consider how 'time' was also a concern among Western colonialists of the 18th to 20th centuries. It will look at how a distinctly Western understanding of time - as something singular, linear, uni-directional and teleological - was brought to the region by Western colonialists and Orientalists, and how the imposition of this linear understanding of time effectively marginalised and erased local understandings of time, history and chronology among native Southeast Asians themselves.

This paper is theoretically driven by doctoral research data. The corresponding doctoral research involved fifteen participants who live in Brazil: immigrants and parents of immigrant students from Haiti and Venezuela and mathematics teachers in schools with immigrant students in São Paulo (Brazil). The research aims to consider socially and racially structured exclusions, to discuss perspectives and approaches, and to challenge mathematics education with immigrant students towards inclusive actions. Thinking about what inclusion and inclusive mathematics education with immigrant students could mean goes toward glimpsing the roots of what can obstruct such a process, which means taking the path towards unwrapping the processes of exclusion and violence against the immigrant population. Immigrants’ and teachers’ voices will be heard in this article to support discussions about the issues around inclusive mathematics education. I present situations that illustrate that microexclusions may accompany the inclusive context in subtle practices. Microexclusions tend to isolate people in a given environment, even if that environment is considered inclusive. This paper aims to discuss a crucial situation: the barriers to including immigrant students have to do with various levels of oppressive social structures. I identify four types of microexclusion related to immigrants having to do with exoticization, misleading identification, second-class citizen treatment, assimilation, and misprise.

The proposal of this article is to reconstruct and follow as closely as possible the itinerary of Francisco Maria Esteves Pereira, a Portuguese Orientalist scholar of the late 19th century. In addition to his military career, he developed a passion for Ethiopian languages and became one of the best specialists of these subjects in his generation. It is through the military archives, on the one hand, and the study of European networks of Orientalist scholars, on the other, that we can better understand how he became such an expert in ancient and modern Ethiopia. From this results an invitation to reread the sources on the relations between Portugal, the Jesuits and Ethiopia beteween the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries, highligting the constructions of these objects of knowledge and their claims, which lead the reader to an “attitude of critical empiricism”. The article deals with stories about camels in the zoological imaginary of the West. The focus lies in a quarrel that occurred between artists and scholars at the Academy of Painting and Sculpture in Paris in the 17th century about the absence of camels in a Poussin painting, at a time when rhetorical and poetic codes invaded painting. The problem addressed is about the significance of contiguity between animal and man in history painting, with its lofty themes and characters, and the question of the admission of the animal in the universe of man's resemblance. There are two fundamental questions, one concerns the bothersome animal, in the mediation between cultures, the one that is the vehicle and symbol of the other and can cross the boundaries, creating discomfort in the universe of taxonomies and in the system of representations; the other concerns the symbolic constitution of the global East-West dualism, in which the camel will play a role. FR. *** EN.The way film directors have brought journalists to the screen within Middle-Eastern conflicts oscillates between characters who appear either as press heroes, or as war victims caught in incomprehensible conflicts. As these films focus on characters most of the time alien to the conflict that they work on, and on their psychology, these films leave aside technical issues to concentrate themselves on journalists as mediators and witnesses, either deeply involved or powerless when facing extreme violence. This mediation is twofolds, as it relates to the journalist's audience, and, at a deeper level, to the film's one. On the one hand, this entails archetypes of adventurous journalists, driven by a mission to inform and to give a voic to the voiceless, but on the other hand, it also means that reporters are also portrayed as rather weak characters, whose inner crisis mimicks their relationship with the field and their calling into question of how they cover conflicts. This distinction reflects diverging approaches between the representations of Iraq and Syria on the one hand, and the Israelo-Palestinian conflict and Lebanon on the other, that leads us to rethink the various dimensions of orientalism, in the media as well as on screen. As such, these films lead the spectactor to question the reporter's gaze, his mission, and to dwell on how film directors make use of the press' mythology to develop their war narratives. In turn, this leaves open the question as to how the media representation is driven by these conflitcts' opposed representations and imaginaries. *** PT. *** more...

- Abstract
My intention in this study is, as for two of her video installations, Zarin (2005) and Munis (2008) from the Women Without Men series (Zanan bedun-e mardan, 2004-2009), to examine the artist’s vision of Orientalism and power geometries. A re-reading of the historical context of Orientalism is part of the theoretical framework of this study, in addition to the theories of the spaces generated at an intersection with the studies of representation in the visual arts. The main question of this research is how Neshat’s chosen aesthetic responds to the powerful Orientalist imaginary, while also responding to the spatial and architectural coordinates of the culture of segregation. It has been observed that the aesthetics of the case studies contain a latent method of media archaeology involving the earthing of memories and notions of the imaginary, in order to provoke a new reading and position for the female subject it represents., La obra de Neshat, desde varias perspectivas teóricas, merece un estudio pormenorizado.

This paper explores the origins of Orientalism and how it came into existence in the discourse of post-colonial studies. This paper utilises the work of Edward Said to demonstrate that Orientalism is not solely a field of study about the Eastern world, but rather critiques the biased nature of views towards the globalised Muslim world. This paper will examine some of the major events where Orientalism has shaped the realm of Muslim affairs as well as international history and politics - such as during the Algerian War of Independence, the polemics of Iran's Nuclear Crisis, the global war on 'Islamist' terrorism and the British government's response to the 7/7 London bombings. These case studies are chronologically ordered to demonstrate the pervasiveness of Orientalism across time. Ultimately, this paper argues that Said's critiques on Orientalism produce an important foundation for postcolonial studies namely: 1) to identify the stereotypes used in media, writing and literature; 2) to unravel fictional narratives among Eurocentric scholars; and 3) to debunk myths when researching the 'globalised Muslim world'--as Orientalism is still very much apparent in the contemporary foreign and domestic policy realm, especially policies towards Muslims. Hence, this paper concludes that decolonisation of history is important in post-colonial studies in order to achieve unbiased (new) knowledge production. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR] more...

Between the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, European empires extended their rule over most of the Muslim world. The present article argues that these empires promoted three interrelated political discourses; namely, a discourse on utilitarianism, a discourse on civilizational progress, and a discourse on liberal imperialism. The empires also encouraged Islamic reform movements, which entailed cooperation between Muslim thinkers, European officials, liberal intellectuals, and Orientalists. Reform movements legitimated the three aforementioned discourses in terms of premodern Islamic religious concepts (e.g. ʿaql, maṣlaḥa, maqāṣid al-šarīʿa, iǧtihād, taqlīd). These concepts were reinterpreted and tacitly linked to imperial policies concerning race, technology, industrial capitalism, and authoritarian violence. The article examines this process by considering the British Empire, and its relationship to Islamic reform projects in India and Egypt. The article discusses nineteenth century British political discourses as developed in the writings of Jeremy Bentham, James Mill, John Stuart Mill, and Herbert Spencer. The article then discusses Islamic reform in India, focusing on the Muslim thinkers Sayyid Aḥmad Ḫān and Amīr ʿAlī, as well as their relationships with British figures like William Muir and John Strachey. Next the article discusses Islamic reform in Egypt, focusing on the Muslim thinkers Muḥammad ʿAbduh and Rašīd Riḍā as well as their relationships with British figures like Lord Cromer and Wilfrid Scawen Blunt.

- The novel "Muslim women" is considered as one of the representative novels of the woman of the colonial Maghreb. The "Muslim woman" is always a mystery that intrigues all Europeans who come to the East; As Europeans cannot access the female world, they give free rein to their imagination and all the fantasies that flow from it. Through this novel, Charles Géniaux wanted to make a glimpse of the Tunisian family and the Tunisian woman and he got rid of all the influences by the conquering modernity. Through the example of "Nedjma", we will try to draw a portrait of Tunisian women as seen by a French man of letters according to his fictitious colonial perception, while giving his discourse its historical, cultural and political dimensions. He tries to strengthen the colonial process, and develops its methods of superiority, from a perspective of construction of the elsewhere and the other oriental. more...

Since the second half of the 19th century, lawyers and jurists who specialize in Co-lonial Law seem intent on integrating more extra-juristic knowledge emanating from the social and natural sciences into their discourse and their practice. This attitude manifests itself even more pronouncedly when adjudicating on the relations between French people and indigenous people, especially in cases that deal with hybrids and with cases at the margin, cases that define the bounds of applicability. As specialists in overseas law, did the jurists use this added knowledge in their quotidian practice? What was the structure of the discourse between these jurists and other scientists? Can we trace the effect of these structures on their work? This article deals with these issues by investigating the use of the category of foreigners who go native and the category of metis by the lawyers of the Third Republic in France. We explore the means by which knowledge acquired from Orientalists and physical anthropologists is embedded into the scaffold and design of their work. more...

Abstract The article deals with stories about camels in the zoological imaginary of the West. The focus lies in a quarrel that occurred between artists and scholars at the Academy of Painting and Sculpture in Paris in the 17th century about the absence of camels in a Poussin painting, at a time when rhetorical and poetic codes invaded painting. The problem addressed is about the significance of contiguity between animal and man in history painting, with its lofty themes and characters, and the question of the admission of the animal in the universe of man’s resemblance.

Hamsuns I Æventyrland.

Taking as reference frame the critical and genealogical analysis of Michel Foucault (1994) I try to understand the discourse mutations associated with sexual practices in a colonial context and how these discourses are part of a "biopower", that hierarchizes and organizes social life. The context of analysis focuses on the Palestinian Territories as a place of circulation of modern discourses, that travel from representations about the homosexual character of the Palestinians to discourses about their homophobic character, always with the aim of building an abyssal separation (Santos, 2009), between a civilized and healthy "Us" and a savage and pathological "Other".
