Abstract

We present first hard X‐ray photoelectron spectroscopy (HAXPES) results of aqueous salt solutions and dispersions of gold nanoparticles in liquid cells equipped with specially designed microfabricated thin silicon nitride membranes, with thickness in the 15–25 nm range, mounted in a high‐vacuum‐compatible environment. The experiments have been performed at the HAXPES endstation of the GALAXIES beamline at the SOLEIL synchrotron radiation facility. The low‐stress membranes are fabricated from 100 mm silicon wafers using standard lithography techniques. Platinum alignment marks are added to the chips hosting the membranes to facilitate the positioning of the X‐ray beam on the membrane by detecting the corresponding photoemission lines. Two types of liquid cells have been used, a static one built on an Omicron‐type sample holder with the liquid confined in the cell container, and a circulating liquid cell, in which the liquid can flow in order to mitigate the effects due to beam damage. We demonstrate that the membranes are mechanically robust and able to withstand 1 bar pressure difference between the liquid inside the cell and vacuum, and the intense synchrotron radiation beam during data acquisition. 2. Investigation of Long Monolayer Graphene Ribbons grown on Graphite Capped 6H-SiC (000-1)

Abstract

We present an investigation of large, isolated, graphene ribbons grown on the C-face of on-axis semi-insulating 6H-SiC wafers. Using a graphite cap to cover the SiC sample, we modify the desorption of the Si species during the Si sublimation process. This results in a better control of the growth kinetics, yielding very long (about 300 microns long, 5 microns wide), homogeneous monolayer graphene ribbons. These ribbons fully occupy unusually large terraces on the step bunched SiC surface, as shown by AFM, optical microscopy and SEM. Raman spectrometry indicates that the thermal stress has been partially relaxed by wrinkles formation, visible in AFM images. In addition, we show that despite the low optical absorption of graphene, optical differential transmission can be successfully used to prove the monolayer character of the ribbons.

Abstract

Bending-mode vibrations of carbon nanotube resonator devices were mechanically detected in air at atmospheric pressure by means of a novel scanning force microscopy method. The fundamental and higher order bending eigenmodes were imaged at up to 3.1GHz with sub-nanometer resolution in vibration amplitude. The resonance frequency and the eigenmode shape of multi-wall nanotubes are consistent with the elastic beam theory for a doubly clamped beam. For single-wall nanotubes, however, resonance frequencies are significantly shifted, which is attributed to fabrication generating, for example, slack. The effect of slack is studied by pulling down the tube with the tip, which drastically reduces the resonance frequency.

Abstract

We report STM-induced desorption of H from Si(100)-H(2$\times1$) at negative sample bias. The desorption rate exhibits a power-law dependence on current and a maximum desorption rate at -7 V. The desorption is explained by vibrational heating of H due to inelastic scattering of tunneling holes with the Si-H 5$\sigma$ hole resonance. The dependence of desorption rate on current and bias is analyzed using a novel approach for calculating inelastic scattering, which includes the effect of the electric field between tip and sample. We show that the maximum desorption rate at -7 V is due to a maximum fraction of inelastically scattered electrons at the onset of the field emission regime., Comment: 4 pages, 4 figures. Abstract

The focused ion beam (FIB) is a powerful tool for the fabrication, modification and characterization of materials down to the nanoscale. Starting with the gallium FIB, which was originally intended for photomask repair in the semiconductor industry, there are now many different types of FIB that are commercially available. These instruments use a range of ion species and are applied broadly in materials science, physics, chemistry, biology, medicine, and even archaeology. The goal of this roadmap is to provide an overview of FIB instrumentation, theory, techniques and applications. By viewing FIB developments through the lens of the various research communities, we aim to identify future pathways for ion source and instrumentation development as well as emerging applications, and the scope for improved understanding of the complex interplay of ion-solid interactions. We intend to provide a guide for all scientists in the field that identifies common research interests and will support future fruitful interactions connecting tool development, experiment and theory. While a comprehensive overview of the field is sought, it is not possible to cover all research related to FIB technologies in detail. We give examples of specific projects within the broader context, referencing original works and previous review articles throughout.

Abstract

APS March Meeting 2017, New Orleans, Louisiana, March 13–17, 2017. -- http://meetings.aps.org/Meeting/MAR17/Session/T1.7, Nanostructured gratings of semicrystalline polymers like poly(propylene azelate) (PPAz) or of ferroelectric copolymers of vinylidene uoride(VDF) and triuoroethylene(TrFE) have been prepared over spin-coated thin lms by Nanoimprint Lithography (NIL). The structure and morphology of the gratings have been investigated by combining Atomic Force Microscopy (AFM) and Grazing Incidence X-ray Scattering at small angle (GISAXS) and wide angle (GIWAXS). The results reveal that NIL aects signicantly the orientation of the crystalline lamellae. In both cases gratings are more abundant in edge-on lamellae than the reference non-printed lms. For PPAz we attribute this eect to the preferential crystallization as at-on lamellae on silicon surfaces either the stamp trench walls or the substrate surface. Thus, the at-on lamellae on the trench walls appear to be edge-on lamellae in the printed sample. These results further support NIL as an appropriate procedure in order to control polymer crystal orientation.
