Historians have generally recognized The War of the Pacific (1879-1884) as a significant event in the political, military, and economic history of South America. Applying an international lens to the conflict reveals its influence on extra-regional states and actors. Violence along the Pacific Slope in the 1860s stimulated demand for surplus (especially U.S. Civil War-era) and experimental weapons, while also offering an operational laboratory for their evaluation. During the war, additional and decidedly "modern" technologies were produced by foreign firms and local actors alike. Information about the efficacy of these systems was carefully documented by international observers as far away as the United States and China. Beginning in the 1880s, Chilean naval preponderance in the American Pacific-a key military result of the war-threatened both U.S. expansion in the region and the ideology of racial superiority which underwrote it. That challenge, in turn, stimulated and for many justified the emergence of the U.S. "New Navy" in the 1890s. An international perspective, as such, suggests the profound and unpredictable ways in which regional or peripheral violence articulated with Great Power politics and navalism in the late nineteenth century. This article examines the lives of artefacts collected by physical anthropologist Aleš Hrdlička during his expeditions to Peru. In 1910 and 1913, Hrdlička travelled to the Andean nation to gather materials that could shed light on the peopling of the Americas, health and disease in pre-Columbian societies, and the purported racial ‘types' of the region. The study focuses on cultural artefacts the scientist acquired, beginning with these materials’ collection as specimens meant to reveal the racial prehistory of the Andes, and continuing with their classification, display, and exchange as museum objects at the Smithsonian Institution. My analysis of Hrdlička's Peruvian collection draws attention not only to how scientific representations of Peru and the Andes have shifted over time, but also to the way in which a focus on museum objects can elucidate changing notions about the cultural agency of prehistoric populations and their present-day descendants. This article examines the general characteristics of El cóndor pasa... (The Condor Passes By...) in relation to its cultural context in Peru's 1910s and the global musical context in which both the famous melody named “El condor pasa" and the musical drama itself are inserted. The author asserts that a well-defined and independent canon of literature has not emerged in Peru. She questions the idea that a Peruvian literary canon was consolidated around 1905 and points out social and political conditions, including those related to Peru's defeat in the Pacific War, that she maintains made it impossible to continue the 19th century hegemonic republican model in which literature constituted one of the ideological elements driving the development of Peru after its independence from Spain. The article examines the influence of key Peruvian authors and critics, including José de la Riva Agüero, Manuel González Prada, and Adolfo Vienrich, on the social and political development of Peru.
