ObjectiveTo determine the associations between the number of adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) and objectively-measured physical activity (PA) in a population-based, demographically diverse cohort of 9-14-year-olds and to determine which subtypes of ACEs were associated with physical activity levels.MethodsWe analyzed data (n = 7046) from the Adolescent Brain Cognitive Development (ABCD) Study 4.0 release at baseline and year 2 follow-up. ACE (cumulative score and subtypes) and physical activity (average Fitbit daily steps assessed at Year 2) were analyzed using linear regression analyses. Covariates included race and ethnicity, sex, household income, parent education, body mass index, study site, twins/siblings, and data collection period.ResultsAdjusted models suggest an inverse association between number of ACEs and Fitbit daily steps, with ≥4 (compared to 0) ACEs associated with 567 fewer daily steps (95% CI -902.2, -232.2). Of the ACEs subtypes, emotional abuse (B = -719.3, 95% CI -1430.8, -7.9), physical neglect (B = -423.7, 95% CI -752.8, -94.6), household mental illness (B = -317.1, 95% CI -488.3, -145.9), and household divorce or separation (B = -275.4, 95% CI -521.5, -29.2) were inversely and statistically significant associated with Fitbit daily steps after adjusting for confounders.ConclusionsOur results suggest that there is an inverse, dose-dependent relationship between cumulative number of ACEs and physical activity as measured by daily steps. This work highlights the importance of screening for ACEs among young people at an early age to help identify those who could benefit from interventions or community programs that support increased physical activity.

Objective: Young Latinas and Black women drink less than women of other racial/ethnic groups but experience more alcohol-related problems in midlife. This study aims to identify modifiable factors to prevent adult onset of alcohol use disorder (AUD) in this population. Methods: Data were collected at six time points as part of the Harlem Longitudinal Development Study from 365 Latinas (47%) and Black (53%) women (mean age at time 1 = 14, standard deviation 1.3). Structural equation modeling was used to test hypothesized pathways from childhood physical and sexual abuse to AUD via depressive mood, anxiety disorders, and somatic complaints in the 20s. We also tested the moderation effect of the high school academic environment by including in the structural equation model two latent variable interaction terms between the school environment and each of the abuse variables. Results: Childhood physical and sexual abuse was positively associated with depressive mood, anxiety disorders, and somatic complaints when participants were in the 20s. Depressive mood mediated childhood abuse and AUD when women were in the 30s. The high school academic environment attenuated the effect of physical, but not sexual abuse, on depressive mood (β = −0.59, B = −9.38, 95% CI [−14.00, −4.76]), anxiety symptoms (β = −0.61, B = −14.19, 95% CI [−21.76, −6.61]), appetite loss (β = −0.41, B = −10.52, 95% CI [−15.61, −5.42]), and sleeplessness (β = −0.50, B = −9.56, 95% CI [−13.95, −5.17]) in the early 20s. Conclusions: Our findings underscore the need to invest in early violence prevention interventions and in education to ensure equitable access to quality, academically oriented, and safe schools. The current study investigated gender differences in perceived social support and posttraumatic growth for survivors of intimate partner violence. Participants for this study included 86 undergraduate students who indicated at least one instance of partner abuse (consisting of physical abuse, sexual abuse, emotional abuse, and harassment). Participants were predominantly female (68%), White/Caucasian (62%), and between 18 and 21 years of age (84%). Participants responded to the Multidimensional Scale of Perceived Social Support, the Composite Abuse Scale, and the Posttraumatic Growth Inventory. Mean differences and correlational analyses were utilized to investigate potential gender differences in the study variables as well as the relationships among them. The prevalence of intimate partner violence was comparable to those found in other studies, with 59% of men and 57% of women indicating experiencing abuse from a partner. Although the prevalence rates were similar, women indicated higher overall partner abuse victimization than did men. Moreover, women indicated statistically significantly higher scores than men in three of the four Composite Abuse Scale subscales, reflecting higher levels of victimization for all forms of abuse except for partner harassment. Further, perceived social support scores were similar for men and women, with the only significant gender difference to emerge being that men indicated higher levels of familial support than did women. No statistically significant gender differences emerged for overall posttraumatic growth or for any of its domains. Finally, social support was correlated with posttraumatic growth for women but not for men. The current study, therefore, suggests that men and women may experience similar levels of personal growth in the aftermath of partner abuse. This study examined the feasibility, acceptability, and preliminary outcomes of MaPaChat, a parent support intervention delivered using Viber group chat to caregivers in the Philippines during the COVID‐19 pandemic. Forty caregivers of children aged 4–17 from predominantly low‐income households participated in a culturally adapted version of the Parenting for Lifelong Health ParentChat programme. Feasibility was assessed by enrolment, attendance, and dropout rates. Semi‐structured interviews with caregivers and programme facilitators explored programme acceptability. A single‐group pre‐post design was used to explore changes in child maltreatment, positive parenting, parenting stress, and other secondary outcomes. The mean attendance rate was 82% and the dropout rate was 10%. Caregivers and facilitators found the programme helpful in enhancing parenting knowledge and skills and were satisfied with the programme delivery using Viber group chat but also reported experiencing technological challenges. Pre‐post comparisons suggested that the intervention has potential in reducing physical and emotional abuse and associated risk factors. The findings suggest that a parenting intervention delivered over digital group chat by trained community service providers may be a feasible and acceptable way to support caregivers in low‐resource settings. Childhood trauma exposure is prevalent among incarcerated youth and associated with antisocial traits and behavior. It has been proposed as a risk factor for the development of sadistic traits, which has been shown to predict future violence in youth. Using regression analyses, we examined the association between self-report and expert-rated measures of childhood trauma, sadistic traits (i.e., verbal, physical, vicarious sadism), and violence (i.e., homicide and non-homicide violent acts) in 54 incarcerated juveniles. Expert-rated (but not self-report) severity of physical abuse was associated with physical and vicarious sadistic traits. Other trauma types (e.g., emotional or sexual abuse) were not significantly associated with sadistic traits. Physical abuse coupled with vicarious sadistic traits conferred the highest risk of non-homicide violence. The findings support and clarify links between childhood trauma, sadistic traits, and violent behavior in youth, and are distinct from those found in other antisocial profiles. Effects of community interventions on child maltreatment are interpreted via rational deterrence theory's assumption of instrumental rationality. However, recent contrasting findings have raised questions about the social exchange currency that regulates human behaviour within the rational deterrence framework. This study contributes to this debate by examining the social currency of influence and its role in child maltreatment prevention. We hypothesized that both individual and community wealth of influence would predict physical abuse severity. Data was obtained from 1,100 nationally representative sample of female mothers in Ghana, and associations were examined using random effects regression models. We found a negative association between physical abuse severity and individual level influence as well as community wealth of influence. Results were only significant in the rural sample. The findings suggest that interventions aiming to increase community commitment to deter and prevent child maltreatment should focus on strengthening the currency of influence in communities. This study described the experiences, analyzed the reasons for bullying, and described the lessons learned by the disheartened learners of a central elementary school. The study employed a qualitative narrative case study approach, with five learners as the participants. Semi-structured interview guide questions were formulated and divided into three parts: beginning, middle and ending stories. These questions were designed to gather rich, in-depth information about the learners' experiences and perspectives. The beginning stories revealed the following emergent themes: physical abuse, verbal abuse, poverty, upsetting, unmotivated, ashamed and doubted. The middle stories had the following emergent themes: bullying as revenge, haughty bullies, discrimination, afraid to retaliate, ignoring, skipping school, seeking justice, and call parent's attention. The ending stories had the following themes: perseverance, do not harm others, striving, calmness, faithful, and trust in the teacher's authority. This study sheds light on the often-overlooked voices of disheartened learners, emphasizing the need for educational systems worldwide to prioritize student well-being and provide support for those who may be struggling. Being a socially conservative country, a number of Bangladeshi female migrant workers working in abroad are not as many as the male. However, in recent times, the number increased a lot, but still female migrant workers are very much under-researched and a minor in getting policy attention. This present study thus tries to fill that gap and to identify the influencing factors of female maid migration, their life as migrants and the reintegration processes of these migrant returnees. This is a qualitative study where interviews were conducted 20 female who worked in middle east as the housemaid and who were registered as migrant returnees at different government and non-government organizations. A thematic analytical procedure was used to analyse the data. The study finds that female workers migrate to Middle East mostly for economic purposes to overcome their economic challenges in home country; however, they face a number of violences such as physical abuse, socio-psychological torture which put their dream in challenge. The result of the study also shows that as the returnees, these female workers faced reintegration challenges too. Objective: The aim of this study was to investigate whether a potential moral cognitive impairment (failure in understanding moral rules) exists in patients with schizophrenia (SCZ) and to explore the effect of childhood trauma (CT) on moral cognition in a group of patients with SCZ. Methods: A total of 99 patients with SCZ and 102 healthy controls (HCs) were included in this study. The Childhood Trauma Questionnaire-Short Form (CTQ) was administered to assess childhood trauma experiences in both groups, while the Moral Identity Measure (MIM) and the Moral Foundations Questionnaire (MFQ) were applied for a comparative evaluation of moral cognition across the two groups. The Positive and Negative Syndrome Scale (PANSS) was administered to assess the psychopathology. Results: Patients with schizophrenia had significantly greater CTQ scores than HCs (42.77 ± 13.50 vs. 29.11 ± 4.25, t =9.697, p <0.001). The prevalence of childhood trauma (χ 2 = 58.452, p <0.001) and history of aggressive behaviors (χ 2 = 23.565, p =0.001) among patients with SCZ were greater than that among HCs. In addition, the scores of moral cognition (MIM: 61.82 ± 15.12 vs. 70.88 ± 8.87, p =0.001; MFQ: 87.24 ± 22.30 vs. 112.62 ± 23.42, p =0.045) in the SCZ group was lower than that in the HC group after controlling for the influence of CT covariates. The MFQ score was negatively correlated with the CTQ score, the emotional abuse (EA) score, the physical abuse (PA) score and the physical neglect (PN) score in SCZ patients. Among HCs, the MFQ score was positively correlated with the CTQ score, as well as with the dimensions of physical abuse (PA) and emotional Neglect (EN). Multiple linear regression analyses revealed that impaired moral cognition performance was significantly predicted by the CTQ score (beta =-0.235, p =0.034, 95% CI -0.743 to -0.031) in patients with SCZ but was significantly predicted by years of education (beta =-0.392, p <0.001, 95% CI -4.783 to -1.876), alcohol use (beta =0.210, p =0.023, 95% CI 2.191 to 29.399) and the CTQ score (beta =0.184, p =0.046, 95% CI 0.019 to 1.928) in HCs. CTQ moderated the effect of SCZ on MFQ (B = 0.516); Simple tests revealed that the group effect on the MFQ was B =12.306 at the lower level(-1SD) and B = 54.089 at the higher level(+1SD) of the CTQ scores. The majority of children referred to child protective services (CPS) system are not suspected of physical or sexual abuse but face other risks, often captured under neglect. This population-based study analyzed data for 145,745 children referred to the Pennsylvania’s child welfare system in 2021. Parental substance use (28%), child behavioral concerns (24%), and unmet material needs (23%) were the most common allegations. Half of referrals included multiple concerns, but only 34% were valadated, indicating service intervention. Child behavioral health was the most frequent standalone concern (14%). Background: In community settings, relatives often provide care to their older family members, which is sometimes perceived as a high burden, overwhelming and stressful, contributing to an increased risk of elder abuse. In most countries, relatives have no legal obligation to provide care when family members are admitted to nursing homes; nevertheless, studies have shown that relatives continue to provide emotional, instrumental, and personal care after admission, often related to the understaffing and high workload of nursing staff. Despite the growing interest in elder abuse in nursing homes, most studies have concentrated on the abuse perpetrated by nursing staff or co-residents, but few studies have explored the abuse that relatives may perpetrate. Methods: This study was a cross-sectional survey of 3,693 nursing staff members recruited from 100 nursing homes in Norway, to examine the extent of relative-to-resident abuse in Norwegian nursing homes, as observed by nursing staff. Results: The findings indicate that 45.6% of the nursing staff had observed one or more episodes of relative-to-resident abuse during the past year. Among the subtypes of abuse, 44.8% of the nursing staff had observed psychological abuse, 8.4% had observed physical abuse, 2.7% had observed financial/material abuse, and 0.7% had observed sexual abuse at least once during the past year. Conclusions: This is the first large study exploring the extent of relative-to-resident abuse in nursing homes, which is a phenomenon that is significantly less addressed than abuse committed by staff and co-residents. The findings in our study illustrate that abuse committed by relatives needs more awareness and attention to improve the well-being of nursing home residents. Further research is recommended to enhance our understanding of such abuse and should include other approaches measuring the proportion of relative-to-resident abuse, as relying solely on staff observations is insufficient for determining the prevalence in this case. Background: Traumatic experiences in an early phase of an individual's life stand out as a highly influential risk factor for poor developmental outcomes. Studies examining poor childhood experiences revealed childhood trauma linked to a negative impact on mental health. Therefore, the objective of this study is to comprehend and investigate the subjective childhood experiences of the affected children. Methods: A qualitative approach was adopted to explore the lived experiences with their consequences. The study employed a purposeful sampling technique to choose adolescents who had encountered abuse and were capable of articulating their experiences with clarity. In-depth interviews were carried out with 18 adolescents aged 13–18 years, all from childcare homes (mean = 16, SD = 1.46). The transcriptions of these interviews were analyzed using a thematic approach. Results: The analysis indicated that the children experienced physical abuse, sexual abuse, rape, abandonment, and neglected home environment. The children took responsibility for the abuse directed toward them and were also engaged in substance use. They further reported experiencing negative effects on their behavioral functions (anger, isolation), cognitive function (difficulty in concentration, low academic performances), emotional function (fear, helplessness), social function (withdrawal, mutism), and biological function (sleeplessness, lack of appetite) due to the adverse events in their life. Perceived needs, for instance, emotional, social, and educational support and positive relationship, as well as growth from traumatic experiences were stated by the children. Conclusion: The findings of the study could have practical implications for clinicians, aiding in the understanding of low emotional expression and unexplained behavior among individuals and assisting in addressing the underlying vulnerability to facilitate their overcoming of these challenges. Additionally, it is suggested that a comprehensive strategy be used that addresses stigma, cultural values, and social norms in addition to legal issues to address the problem. This article is an effort to explain how a gender-specific (women only) community-based research project, working in partnership with an Indigenous women's organization, made visible issues of gender, sexuality, and race in the Indian residential school (IRS) compensation claims process. The study focused on the Independent Assessment Process (IAP), which involved an out-of-court adjudication whereby IRS Survivors gave oral testimony to an adjudicator about serious physical and sexual abuses they experienced at IRS and the consequential harms. The IAP was a key part of the IRS Settlement Agreement. The article discusses the IAP in the context of Canada's colonial history, and then it provides, through results of a community-based study, insights from Survivors, support workers, and adjudicators. The study demonstrated how the absence of a gender lens in legal policy and practices can create unfair bias and, conversely, how attention to gender, sexuality, and race can assist in mitigating colonial or settler bias. Background: Chronic headache (CH) is a widespread problem in clinical practice. The causes of the disease are very complex and varied, including organic, functional and even psychogenic causes. Adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) are related to several psychogenic neurological disorders. However, whether the number of ACEs is associated with the risk of developing CH has not been well established. Therefore, in this study, we aimed to identify the association between the number of ACEs and the risk of developing CH in the general population using a Chinese national survey. Methods: Participants who reported experiencing headache in two consecutive waves of investigation from the China Health and Retirement Longitudinal Study (CHARLS) were defined as having CH and were included in this study. The life history information of the participants was then matched. Twelve types of ACEs were identified from the life history information. The participants were divided into four classes according to the number of ACEs. The association between the number of ACEs and the risk of developing CH was analysed using logistic regression. Results: A total of 654 (14.77%) of 4427 participants were defined as CH within 9 years of the survey. After adjusting for various confounding factors, compared to that associated with Class 1 (ACEs = 0), the OR for CH associated with Class 3 (ACEs = 2) was 1.68 (95% CI: 1.30–2.19), P < 0.001 and the OR for CH associated with Class 4 (ACEs > 2) was 2.62 (95% CI:2.04–3.38),P < 0.001. Further analysis of different types of ACEs demonstrated that physical abuse, household mental illness and five other types of ACEs were associated with the risk of developing CH. Conclusions: Exposure to ACEs was associated with a greater risk of developing CH, indicating the importance of early intervention for individuals with ACEs to mitigate the detrimental impact of ACEs on CH and to promote health. Aims: Research has associated lack of parental care, physical abuse, and parental substance abuse to homelessness, with the presence of two or more such factors dramatically increasing one's chances of becoming homeless as an adult. Less clear is which (cumulation of) factors may mediate the difference between transitional and recurrent homelessness. Methods: Quantitative analysis of four risk factors—addiction, weak social network, criminal activity, psychopathology—among 69 transitionally and recurrently homeless (RH) adults, followed by in‐depth qualitative analysis of adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) among 30 selected participants. Results: RH participants had higher cumulative risk and a higher prevalence and broader range of ACEs than transitionally homeless participants, with the prevalence of childhood physical abuse marking the greatest difference between the two groups. Recurrent homelessness was also correlated with addiction to hard drugs, criminal activity, and weak social networks. Summary: This systematic review with meta‐analysis assessed the effects of adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) linked to overweight or obesity in adolescents. Twenty‐eight studies (cross‐sectional, case–control, or cohort) were included, which described individuals with a history of ACE or adverse family experiences, such as physical, emotional, or psychological abuses; neglect; exposure to domestic violence or peer violence; and sexual abuse. Body mass index (BMI) or BMI z score was used by the study to define adolescents with overweight or obesity. Adolescents who reported childhood experiences, mainly physical, sexual, and emotional abuses, were more associated with overweight/obesity, especially those who experienced four or more ACEs. Network meta‐analysis indicated that physical, sexual, and neglect were the most common ACEs associated with obesity in adolescents. Due to significant differences and imprecision among the studies, network meta‐analysis was inconclusive in determining the impact of other types of ACE on outcomes. However, evidence suggests that exposure to sexual and physical abuse, as well as neglect, is associated with adolescents who are obese or overweight, as well as with the number of ACE experienced. Prior studies have found that 15–31% of sex market facilitators (SMFs) experienced family trafficking, and this was a primary route of market entrance (Dank et al., 2014), yet researchers have not thoroughly explored this social problem. We interviewed 24 SMFs exposed to facilitation through family, starting as teenagers. We qualitatively explored the accounts using the Grounded Theory (G.T.) approach (Glaser & Strauss, 2017), evaluating patterns to their entrance story using the sensitizing concept of "agency." Our sample consisted of SMFs experiencing structural disadvantage. Their positionality informed their formulations of their entrance, ranging from family coercion to cooperative learning. Their negative formulations centered on being denied a childhood, exposure to negative stimuli, physical or sexual abuse, unconventional relationships with caregivers, strained relationships with traditional family and family discord. At the same time, their positive interpretations centered on family bonding, masculinity, survival, career, status, and freedom. Our findings indicate that prevention programming should be implemented at the community and family levels to address structural inequality contributing to fragile family systems, risk, trauma, and destructive relationship cycles. AbstractObjectivesMethodResultsConclusionBased on the Caregiving Stress Theory and Cognitive Theory of Stress and Coping, this study examined whether increase in caregiving stressors had an impact on subsequent increase in different forms of elder abuse. Additionally, this study evaluated how these relationships were influenced by caregiver (CG) coping strategies.A group of 800 Chinese primary family CGs and their care recipients (CRs) with mild cognitive impairment or mild-to-moderate dementia were analyzed. Participatory dyads were assessed and followed for 2 years. Structural Equation Models were used to test the associations among caregiving stressors, CG coping strategies, and elder abuse.Increase in caregiving stressors (ie CR decreased cognitive function, neuropsychiatric symptoms, and functional impairment) significantly increased the level of subsequent physical abuse, psychological abuse, and neglect. In addition, the associations between caregiving stressors and different forms of elder abuse as stated above was mediated by CG dysfunctional coping strategies.This study highlights the varying impact of caregiving stressors on different types of elder abuse and emphasizes the role of CG coping strategies in mediating these relationships. Background: Child abuse in Taiwan is a major societal concern that severely affects the well-being of children. Despite the complexity in detecting abuse, reports of child abuse are increasing, evidenced by a rise in cases and heightened awareness. This study utilizes judicial judgments as a lens to understand the varied interpretations of child abuse by clinical and forensic experts and explores the broader epidemiological trends of such abuse within the declining youth population of Taiwan. Methods: We conducted a retrospective study by analyzing official court judgments on child abuse allegations judged from 2008 to 2022 from the online database of Judicial Yuan. Furthermore, the study analyzed demographic factors, injury patterns, and opinions from various experts. Results: The results reveal that severe criminal cases of child abuse predominantly involve biological fathers as the primary offenders and physical abuse as the most common form of maltreatment. Victims are typically aged less than 5 years, which frequently leads to an unfavorable prognosis. Analysis also highlights the TEN-4-FACESp acronym as a highly predictive indicator of child abuse and underscores the prevalence of abusive head trauma (AHT). Moreover, the findings emphasize ongoing disparities in opinions between forensic medical examiners and clinical physicians, especially in AHT cases, which potentially influences judicial decisions. AbstractBeing an adoptive family member could be challenging, especially if the social context conveys unrealistic representations. In Italy, few studies explored socially shared beliefs about adoptive families. We investigated how adoptive parents and adopted children are perceived within the Italian context and whether attitudes toward adoptive and biological parenthood are different. 630 participants who were not part of adoptive families completed an ad hoc questionnaire exploring adoption-related beliefs, the Semantic Differential Scale, and the Couples Ratings Scale after reading vignettes about biological and adoptive parenthood. Our results showed positive views of adoptive parents, high concerns about the social support for adoptive families, and high worries about physical and sexual abuse for biological families. These results are an important first step toward understanding adoption-related socially shared representations in Italy, with the final aim of preventing negative behaviors toward adoptive families. Studies on bipolar disorder (BD) have suggested that exposure to childhood trauma (CT) and rapid cycling BD (RC-BD) are associated with earlier onset and overall worse prognosis. The association between CT exposure and RC-BD in patients from low/middle-income countries has not been sufficiently characterized. Therefore, we performed a case–control study of patients with RC-BD (n = 35), patients without RC-BD (n = 35), and healthy controls (HC) (n = 105) in a low/middle-income country, Colombia, to evaluate CT exposure and RC-BD for clinical associations. We reported a significant number of patients with RC-BD exposed to physical abuse and/or sexual abuse compared with patients without RC-BD during the course of illness. In addition, CT exposure and RC-BD were associated with an earlier age of onset and delayed diagnosis and treatment. Aim Method Results Conclusion Premenstrual syndrome is a women's health problem affecting women of reproductive age. Early traumas may have negative effects on women's health. Childhood traumas are thought to be an important risk factor for the emergence of premenstrual syndrome. The aim of this study was to investigate the relationship between premenstrual syndrome and childhood traumas in women.This is a cross‐sectional study. This study was conducted online between September 2023 and January 2024. The sample of the study consisted of 437 women of reproductive age, between the ages of 18–49, who did not have any obstacles to participating in the study. Personal Information Form, Premenstrual Syndrome Scale and Childhood Trauma Scale were used to collect the data. SPPS statistical program was used to analyze the data.The prevalence of premenstrual syndrome was 55.6%. Emotional neglect, physical abuse, emotional abuse and sexual abuse levels were found to be higher in women with premenstrual syndrome (p < 0.05). It was determined that childhood traumas increased the level of premenstrual syndrome in women (ß = 0.266). Childhood trauma explained 6.8% of the total change in premenstrual syndrome level (R2 = 0.068). Emotional neglect (ß = 0.163) and physical abuse (ß = 0.121) increased the level of premenstrual syndrome.Childhood traumas were found to be an important factor affecting the occurrence of premenstrual syndrome and exacerbating its symptoms. Objective: The aim of this study was to investigate whether a potential moral cognitive impairment (failure in understanding moral rules) exists in patients with schizophrenia (SCZ) and to explore the effect of childhood trauma (CT) on moral cognition in a group of patients with SCZ. Methods: A total of 99 patients with SCZ and 102 healthy controls (HCs) were included in this study. The Childhood Trauma Questionnaire-Short Form (CTQ) was administered to assess childhood trauma experiences in both groups, while the Moral Identity Measure (MIM) and the Moral Foundations Questionnaire (MFQ) were applied for a comparative evaluation of moral cognition across the two groups. The Positive and Negative Syndrome Scale (PANSS) was administered to assess the psychopathology. Results: Patients with schizophrenia had significantly greater CTQ scores than HCs (42.77 ± 13.50 vs. 29.11 ± 4.25, t=9.697, p<0.001). The prevalence of childhood trauma (χ2 = 58.452, p<0.001) and history of aggressive behaviors (χ2 = 23.565, p=0.001) among patients with SCZ were greater than that among HCs. In addition, the scores of moral cognition (MIM: 61.82 ± 15.12 vs. 70.88 ± 8.87, p=0.001; MFQ: 87.24 ± 22.30 vs. 112.62 ± 23.42, p=0.045) in the SCZ group was lower than that in the HC group after controlling for the influence of CT covariates. The MFQ score was negatively correlated with the CTQ score, the emotional abuse (EA) score, the physical abuse (PA) score and the physical neglect (PN) score in SCZ patients. Among HCs, the MFQ score was positively correlated with the CTQ score, as well as with the dimensions of physical abuse (PA) and emotional Neglect (EN). Multiple linear regression analyses revealed that impaired moral cognition performance was significantly predicted by the CTQ score (beta=-0.235, p=0.034, 95% CI -0.743 to -0.031) in patients with SCZ but was significantly predicted by years of education (beta=-0.392, p<0.001, 95% CI -4.783 to -1.876), alcohol use (beta=0.210, p=0.023, 95% CI 2.191 to 29.399) and the CTQ score (beta=0.184, p=0.046, 95% CI 0.019 to 1.928) in HCs. CTQ moderated the effect of SCZ on MFQ (B = 0.516); Simple tests revealed that the group effect on the MFQ was B=12.306 at the lower level(-1SD) and B = 54.089 at the higher level(+1SD) of the CTQ scores. The article explores the relationship between child maltreatment and inhaled corticosteroid (ICS) responsiveness in youth with asthma. The study, conducted on African American and Puerto Rican youth aged 8-20 years, found that children with a history of maltreatment were more likely to experience improved asthma-related quality of life after ICS treatment compared to those without such history. Despite limitations in statistical power and generalizability, the findings highlight the importance of ICS treatment for children with asthma and maltreatment history. The study suggests that ICS may be more beneficial for youth with maltreatment history due to prior suboptimal asthma management or enhanced perception of improvement in quality of life. Aim: To determine the attitudes and responses of Victorian paediatric intensive care doctors to the detection and reporting of child maltreatment. Methods: A prospective study conducted in a 30‐bed paediatric intensive care unit of a university teaching hospital using data collected from a questionnaire completed by paediatric intensive care consultants and registrars. The questionnaire covered the following domains – doctors' knowledge of Victorian mandatory reporting legislation, doctors' history of reporting and doctors' current role in the detection and reporting of child maltreatment. Results: The questionnaire was completed by 37 doctors. All but one doctor considered their role in the detection and reporting of all six forms of maltreatment (physical abuse, sexual abuse, emotional abuse, neglect, exposure to domestic violence and grooming to facilitate later sexual activity with a child) very important or somewhat important. Thirty‐two percent of doctors did not feel adequately trained to detect child maltreatment while 51% did not feel adequately trained to report maltreatment. If a doctor wanted to make a report to Child Protection about the physical or sexual abuse of a child, only one would likely make Child Protection their first point of contact. Conclusions: Paediatric intensive care doctors show a strong intent to detect and report child maltreatment across a broad range of maltreatment types. Doctors are likely to contact one or more members of a child's care team and/or one or more relevant hospital/community services before making a report to Child Protection about the physical or sexual abuse of a child. Simple Summary: This research was inspired by a desire to understand how adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) impact depression among cancer survivors. The study's findings revealed that cancer survivors with three or more ACEs had a depression rate of 40.8%, compared to 18.7% among those with one to two ACEs and 10.9% among those with no ACEs. Survivors with three or more ACEs were significantly more likely to report experiencing depression. Among the three ACE subtypes—sexual abuse, physical abuse, and having family members with mental illnesses—cancer survivors with family members suffering from mental illnesses had the highest odds of depression, followed by those who experienced physical abuse. These findings provide a crucial basis for health providers to screen cancer survivors for ACEs and depression, guiding proactive screening and treatment of depression in this vulnerable population. Objectives: Adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) are linked to a heightened risk of depression. We explored the relationship between ACEs and both depression and mental distress among cancer survivors. Methods: This was a cross-sectional analysis using the 2022 Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System database of cancer survivors aged ≥18 (n = 14,132). The primary outcome was self-reported history of depression, and the secondary outcome was mental distress. The exposure variable was the number of ACEs, classified as 0, 1–2, and ≥3. Weighted multivariable logistic regression models assessed the association between the number of ACEs and depression and mental distress while adjusting for covariates. Results: Approximately 22% of respondents reported experiencing ≥3 ACEs. The prevalence of depression was 21.8%, and mental distress was 15.4%. Compared with cancer survivors who had experienced 0 ACEs, those who had experienced ≥3 (aOR = 3.94; 95% CI, 3.04–5.10) or 1–2 (aOR = 1.85; 95% CI, 1.47–2.32) ACEs had a higher likelihood of reporting depression. Compared with cancer survivors who had experienced 0 ACEs, those who had experienced ≥3 (aOR = 0.67; 95% CI, 0.48–0.93) had a lower likelihood of reporting mental distress. Child physical abuse has significant morbidity and mortality in the pediatric population. There is growing evidence that abusive spinal injury has been under-recognized, changing historical perceptions that these injuries are relatively uncommon. Increased utilization of MRI has been pivotal in recognizing that most abusive spinal injuries involve the soft tissues and ligaments or manifest as intrathecal blood products, which are often undetectable by radiography or CT. Detecting spinal injury in the work-up of non-accidental trauma improves management for abused children and their siblings (defined as siblings or other household members). This review highlights key points in the imaging literature of abusive spinal injury, describes typical patterns of injury, and addresses appropriate imaging practice for work-up. Background: Mistreatment of women during childbirth is a global health challenge. Maternity healthcare providers play a key role in influencing women's birth experience. This study aimed to assess the knowledge, attitudes, and practices of healthcare providers regarding mistreatment of women during labour and childbirth in public hospitals in Tehran, Iran. Methods: This cross-sectional study was part of an implementation research project that was conducted from October to December 2021 at five public teaching hospitals in Tehran. All eligible maternity healthcare providers (obstetricians and midwives) and students were invited to participate in this study. Data were collected using a questionnaire consisting of four sections: socio-demographic characteristics (11 items), knowledge (11 items), attitudes (13 items), and practices (14 items) about mistreatment. Knowledge, attitude, and practice scores were determined using Bloom's cut-off points. Logistic regression analyses were used to identify the socio-demographic characteristics associated with knowledge and attitudes. A p-value of <0.05 was considered statistically significant. Results: Of the 270 participants, 255 (94.5%) participated in the study. Majority of the participants (82.7%) had poor knowledge regarding mistreatment of women during labour and childbirth. Poor knowledge was more apparent in the categories of physical abuse, verbal abuse, poor rapport between women and providers, and failure to meet professional standards of care. Most participants (69.4%) had poor attitudes towards mistreatment; they were alright with physical abuse, verbal abuse, and discrimination. Only 3.1% of the participants reported moderate mistreatment practices towards birthing women. Verbal and physical abuse were the most prevalent categories used by the participants. The number of night shifts was associated with attitudes regarding mistreatment (AOR = 0.45, 95% CI = 0.22–0.89, p = 0.02). Conclusion: The knowledge and attitude of our participants regarding maternity mistreatment were poor. A small percentage of the participants reported mistreatment practices. The findings of our study have important implications for program planners and decision-makers in developing effective interventions to reduce mistreatment of women during labour and childbirth in Iran. This study explored the relationship between childhood trauma and sex addiction among a sample of adult men (N = 149). Thirty‐eight (25.5%) men screened positive for sex addiction, whereas 111 (74.5%) did not. Using descriptive discriminant analysis, we found that four subscales of early trauma predicted risk of sex addiction group membership to varying degrees, accounting for 22.3% of the variance explained. Sexual and emotional abuse accounted for the most variance explained in the group differences, whereas physical abuse and, to a lesser extent, general trauma also contributed to the group differences. Prior research has identified a relationship between animal abuse and intimate partner violence (IPV). However, there is a gap in the literature regarding the relationship between IPV and type of animal abused. From a sample of 851 participants, this study explored, using unadjusted odds ratios, the bivariate relationships between types of IPV victimization (e.g., psychological, physical, and severe IPV) and partners' abuse of cats, dogs, small pets, and horses. The strongest association was between the partner's abuse of cats and severe IPV victimization. The partner's cat abuse was associated with a 1,232% increase in the likelihood of severe IPV for women and a 945% increase for men. Cat abuse and dog abuse were significantly associated with all types of IPV, abuse of small pets was associated with physical and severe IPV, and horse abuse was not significantly related to IPV. Additionally, this study examined the relationship between types of animal abuse (e.g., neglect, emotional abuse, threats, physical abuse, and severe physical abuse) for cats and dogs and IPV. Cat neglect was most strongly associated with severe IPV and increased the likelihood of it by approximately 3,700%. Dog neglect increased the likelihood of severe IPV by approximately 1,600%. Results from the study indicate that there are differences between type of animal abused in relationship to IPV and highlights the need for future research to examine types of animal abuse separately. Limited data are available on cases presenting for triage by child abuse specialists, particularly data combining patient demographics with presenting concerns and outcomes. This study aims to provide a descriptive analysis of cases presenting to one child abuse medical subspecialty team. Data were collected for all referrals triaged by the Child Protection Program, a child abuse team located within an academic children's medical center. The program triaged a total of 928 cases and completed 345 in-person visits with a medical provider. Nearly, half of all provider visits were for evaluation of children aged 3 years and younger (51%) and for a concern of physical abuse (49%). Of these visits, 26% were determined to be consistent with an accident or medical condition. This descriptive analysis highlights the burden of child abuse cases presenting to one small hospital-based child abuse program, as well as the structural and financial challenges faced by these programs. Although numerous factors have been found to influence postpartum depression (PPD), no previous meta-analysis have systematically explored whether it is affected by adverse childhood experiences (ACEs). This study aimed to explore the influence of ACEs and their subtypes on PPD. A systematic literature search was conducted using Web of Science, PubMed, Embase, Wan Fang, China Science and Technology Journal Database, Chinese Biomedical Database, and China National Knowledge Infrastructure, and literature was screened according to inclusion and exclusion criteria. Methodological quality assessment and data extraction were performed on the included studies. A random-effects model was used to pool the effects. In total, 24 studies were included, and 73 independent effects were extracted from them. The meta-analysis revealed that ACE was a risk factor for PPD (odds ratio [OR] = 2.31, 95% confidence interval [CI] [2.04, 2.63]). The subgroup analysis results showed that emotional abuse was the ACE subtype most strongly related to the occurrence of PPD (OR = 2.95, 95% CI [2.08, 4.20]), followed by emotional neglect (OR = 2.87, 95% CI [1.89, 4.36]) and sexual abuse (OR = 2.81, 95% CI [1.93, 4.09]). In addition, family member incarceration (OR = 2.62, 95% CI [1.51, 4.54]), physical abuse (OR = 2.31, 95% CI [1.67, 3.19]), and physical neglect (OR = 2.15, 95% CI [1.36, 3.39]) also have strong effects on PPD. A systematic review was conducted to examine the factors that put women at risk of domestic violence in Nepal. Using the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA), PubMed, Cochrane, MEDLINE, CINAHL, and PsycINFO were searched supplemented by searching of the reference list manually. Of the 143 studies identified 24 were included in the final review. Search strategy was developed, and studies were included if they considered female participants (age 15–49 years) in heterosexual relationship, with exposure of different factors and whose outcomes were the magnitude of any form of violence (physical, sexual, and emotional/psychological). The Mixed Methods Appraisal Tool was used to assess the quality of the studies included. The findings are categorized based on the four levels of the ecological framework. At the individual level, the alcohol consumption level of husband, education level of both women and men, women's age at the time of marriage and childhood exposure to violence were found to be highly prevalent risk factors. At the relationship level, most prevalent risk factors were controlling husband and decision-making capacity of women. At the community level, belonging to underprivileged community or low caste system and living in Terai region were the risk factors. At the societal level, patriarchal belief and norms supporting violence were the risk factors. The complex nature of violence against women in Nepal requires culturally sensitive interventions along with organized efforts from the local and intra government to improve the status of Nepalese women at all levels of the ecological framework. Previous research on adolescent peer networks has mainly focused on friendship networks and their association with violence, but very limited research is available on peer rejection networks. This lack of knowledge hinders the effectiveness of preventing peer rejection and its negative effects. Based on the theory of the cycle of violence, the present study examines the extent to which parental physical abuse experiences, aggressive behavior toward peers and acceptance of violence are related to peer rejection networks at school. Social network analysis with a stochastic actor-oriented model of longitudinal data collected from high school students (Wave 1, n = 620; Wave 2, n = 590) confirms that adolescents who frequently use aggression toward their peers are more likely to be rejected, especially if those adolescents have experienced abuse. Similarly, peers are more likely to reject adolescents with high levels of accepting violence. The results also show that aggression toward peers generally tends to decrease over time but not for adolescents who reject a larger number of students. For students who reject many peers, aggression frequency increases. From the perspective of resilience theory, peer rejection, when combined with aggression toward peers and acceptance of violence, particularly in female adolescents, creates a significant risk factor for socio-emotional development. Therefore, tackling violence attitudes, experiences and behavior in the school environment and at home is crucial in overcoming the cycle of violence. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Background: Intimate partner violence (IPV) is a worldwide issue with a high prevalence rate seen in Asia. Aims and Objectives: To plan and implement preventive measures, it is important to understand the characteristics, background, and medico-legal significance, especially from the perspective of perpetrators. MATERIALS AND METHODS: This study is a questionnaire-based retrospective study conducted among perpetrators of IPV who presented to a tertiary care hospital in Sri Lanka. Results: Out of 325 subjects, 97.2% were males and 64.0% were aged 26–45 years. Most (80.9%) perpetrators were older than the victimized partner, with a mean age gap of 4.3 years. Only 2.8% had achieved higher education and 78.5% had been married to the victim for more than5 years. Alcohol and/or other substances were abused by 75.4% and 11.1% of them were diagnosed with a psychiatric illness. Perpetrators have been exposed to child abuse (CA) as minors (50.1%), with physical CA being the most common, whereas 42.5% had witnessed IPV during their childhood. Ill-treatment by the spouse (odds ratio [OR] = 24 [95% confidence interval (CI):5.6, 99.9]) and substance use (OR =22 [95% CI: 5.1, 91.5]) were significantly associated with perpetrating emotional violence. A victim having an extramarital affair was 5.1 times more likely to be subjected to sexual IPV, whereas previous IPV, parental deprivation, and affairs of perpetrator were proved to be protective factors. IPV had negatively affected the economy of 71.3% of families. Legal procedures were expected by 22.4%, whereas 60% wanted to negotiate with their spouses. Conclusion: Families having low income and alcohol/substance abuse should be targeted to plan preventive programs at the community level. Proper counseling and follow-up of victims of CA can be used as a primary preventive measure of IPV.

In some cases, making of physical abuse diagnosis can be difficult if the findings were derived from an unusual disease or an unexpected finding of a common disease. A female infant was admitted to emergency department of our hospital, who was suffering from loss of consciousness. Examination and imaging methods revealed subarachnoid hemorrhage, old and new femur fractures, bilateral retinal hemorrhage. Performing genetic tests with multidisciplinary approach concluded that our case was found to have a mutation, DOCK8 (NM_001190458; c.2071G>A; p.Val691Met), suggests to Job syndrome (JS). JS is not only an immunodeficiency syndrome but also can be manifested by skeletal and connective tissue disorders. The fractures were most likely due to JS. Physicians must be aware of these probabilities. On the other hand, though it was only reported in a heterozygous form in GenomAD (genome aggregation database) it has big value that it was homozygous in our case.

Background: Globally, early-life adversity (ELA) is linked to an increased risk of developing depression in adulthood; however, only a few studies have examined the specific effects of various types of ELA on depression in children and adolescents. This meta-analysis explores the association between the subtypes of ELA and the risk for youth-onset depression. Methods: We searched three electronic databases for reporting types of ELA, namely, emotional abuse, physical abuse, sexual abuse, emotional neglect, physical neglect, family conflict/violence, divorce, low socioeconomic status, and left-behind experience, associated with depression before the age of 18 years. Our meta-analysis utilized the odds ratio (OR) and relied on a random effects model. Large heterogeneous effects were detected. Some factors moderated the association between ELA and depression in youths. The homogeneity of variance test and meta-regression analysis were used to detect these relationships. Results: A total of 87 studies with 213,006 participants were ultimately identified via several strategies in this meta-analysis. Individuals who experienced ELA were more likely to develop depression before the age of 18 years old than those without a history of ELA (OR=2.14; 95% CI [1.93, 2.37]). The results of the subgroup analysis revealed a strong association between ELA and depression in youth, both in terms of specific types and dimensions. Specifically, emotional abuse (OR = 4.25, 95% CI [3.04, 5.94]) was more strongly related to depression in children and adolescents than other forms of ELA were. For both dimensions, threat (OR = 2.60, 95% CI [2.23, 3.02]) was more closely related to depression than deprivation was (OR = 1.76, 95% CI [1.55, 1.99]). Conclusion: This meta-analysis revealed that the adverse effects of a broader consideration of ELA on the risk of youth-onset depression vary according to the subtypes of ELA. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Child physical abuse is often perceived as a crime perpetrated within the family and out of sight. However, recent studies have indicated the presence of others during incidents of physical abuse. The current study was designed to examine the experiences and perceptions of children who were physically abused in their families concerning the presence of others, as conveyed during their forensic interviews. A thematic analysis of 26 forensic interviews was conducted with Israeli children aged 5–13. Three main themes were identified: (1) Patterns, roles, and coping mechanisms: The multifaceted spectrum of familial abuse; (2) The echoes of family reactions: Shaping children's abuse experiences; and (3) Navigating the storm together: Sibling bonds amidst familial abuse. The children's narratives highlighted their distress and pointed to the abusive and chaotic daily routine in which they lived. In spotlighting their encounters with physical abuse, the children focused on their need to be seen and gain certainty in their daily routines. The discussion highlights the unique and elusive dynamics of families in which child physical abuse occurs and challenges the social perception that physical abuse occurs secretly. The characteristics of such abuse highlight the urgent need for policymakers and professionals to treat the phenomenon of physical abuse within the family as a visible phenomenon. Background: Parents were at the forefront of responding to the needs of children during the COVID-19 pandemic. This study used the RE-AIM framework to examine the Reach, Effectiveness, Adoption, Implementation, and Maintenance of a global inter-agency initiative that adapted evidence-based parenting programs to provide immediate support to parents. Methods: Data were collected via short surveys sent via email, online surveys, and analysis of social media metrics and Google Analytics. Retrospective surveys with 1,303 parents and caregivers in 11 countries examined impacts of the resources on child maltreatment, positive relationship building, parenting efficacy, and parenting stress. Results: The parenting resources were translated into over 135 languages and dialects; reached an estimated minimum 212.4 million people by June 2022; were adopted by 697 agencies, organizations, and individuals; and were included in 43 national government COVID-19 responses. Dissemination via social media had the highest reach (n = 144,202,170, 67.9%), followed by radio broadcasts (n = 32,298,525, 15.2%), text messages (n = 13,565,780, 6.4%), and caseworker phone calls or visits (n = 8,074,787, 3.8%). Retrospective surveys showed increased parental engagement and play, parenting self-efficacy, confidence in protecting children from sexual abuse, and capacity to cope with stress, as well as decreased physical and emotional abuse. Forty-four organizations who responded to follow-up surveys in April 2021 reported sustained use of the resources as part of existing services and other crisis responses. Conclusion: This study highlights the importance of a) establishing an international collaboration to rapidly adapt and disseminate evidence-based content into easily accessible resources that are relevant to the needs of parents; b) creating open-source and agile delivery models that are responsive to local contexts and receptive to further adaptation; and c) using the best methods available to evaluate a rapidly deployed global emergency response in real-time. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) define child maltreatment as any act or series of actions, whether through commission or omission, by a caregiver that poses a threat to or harms a child. Child neglect is generally characterized by a continuing failure to fulfill a child's basic physical and/or psychological needs, which can significantly impair the child's development or health. Specifically, dental neglect refers to the willful neglect by a caregiver or legal guardian to prevent the onset of oral diseases and the failure to seek necessary treatment to maintain proper oral health, functionality and freedom from pain and infection. Child maltreatment can be classified into several categories, which may occur independently or in combination. These categories include physical abuse, sexual abuse, emotional or psychological abuse and neglect, physical neglect, human trafficking, medical care and Munchausen syndrome by proxy. Child abuse and neglect are critical issues that extend beyond social contexts to significantly impact healthcare professionals who may encounter abused children. With over half of trauma cases occurring in the head and neck area, dental professionals are uniquely positioned to offer vital insights into instances of abuse and are essential in identifying oral signs indicative of neglect. This makes the detection and reporting of abuse not only a moral duty but also a legal obligation. This review focuses on assessing perioral and intraoral injuries, bite marks, infections, diseases and psychological distress that might indicate potential child abuse or neglect. Complex trauma history is one of the incarcerated girls' most salient characteristics, and two of the most injurious outcomes are suicide ideation and attempted suicide. However, to the best of our knowledge, not one published study has thus far focused on the suicide experiences of rural girls in detention facilities. Guided by theoretical perspectives on females' pathways into crime and using data derived from in-depth semistructured interviews with 39 girls housed in two West Virginia detention centers, the main objective of this article is to help fill a major gap in the extant literature on rural girls in conflict with the law. This study assessed the prevalence of interpersonal violence (IV) experienced by elite U.S. athletes. Athletes were surveyed about experiences of emotional, physical, sexual violence, and deprivation of food or water, as well as questions about mental health indices, identity characteristics, and who perpetrated the harm. Of the total sample, 57.8% reported experiencing some form of IV in sport. Most athletes who experienced IV experienced multiple forms with a large overlap between emotional abuse and other forms of violence. A significant relationship was found between reporting any form of IV and having been diagnosed with one or more psychiatric disorders – particularly anxiety, depression and Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder. IV was also significantly associated with self-reported eating disorders. A particularly strong association was found between reporting being deprived of food in sport and reporting an eating disorder. This study reveals a critical need for more research focused on the traumatic effects of IV in sport. The potential for detrimental effects on athletes' mental health also underscores the need for improvements in the prevention and early detection of IV in sport. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
