High protein content, excellent amino acid profile, absence of anti-nutritional factors (ANFs), high digestibility and good palatability of fishmeal (FM), make it a major source of protein in aquaculture. Naturally derived FM is at risk due to an increase in its demand, unsustainable practices, and price. Thus, there is an urgent need to find affordable and suitable protein sources to replace FM. Plant protein sources are suitable due to their widespread availability and low cost. However, they contained certain ANFs, deficiency of some amino acids, low nutrient bioavailability and poor digestibility due to presence of starch and fiber. These unfavourable characteristics make them less suitable for feed as compared to FM. Thus, these potential challenges and limitations associated with various plant proteins have to be overcome by using different methods, i.e. enzymatic pretreatments, solvent extraction, heat treatments and fermentation, that are discussed briefly in this review. This review assessed the impacts of plant products on growth performance, body composition, flesh quality, changes in metabolic activities and immune response of fishes. To minimize the negative effects and to enhance nutritional value of plant products, beneficial functional additives such as citric acid, phytase and probiotics could be incorporated into the plant-based FM. Interestingly, these additives improve growth of fishes by increasing digestibility and nutrient utilization of plant based feeds. Overall, this review demonstrated that the substitution of fishmeal by plant protein sources is a plausible, technically-viable and practical option for sustainable aquaculture feed production.

When assessing the non-dietary risks for operators, workers, bystanders and residents to active substances in plant protection products (PPPs) that contain stereoisomers, the EFSA guidance on stereoisomers recommends the application of uncertainty factors when the initial ratio of stereoisomers undergoes a significant stereoisomeric excess change of more than 10%. This precautionary approach may be over-conservative in cases where the change in isomers is due to differences in their degradation rates rather than conversion of one isomer to a potentially more toxic isomer. Therefore, the impact of isomeric composition in non-dietary risk assessments of PPPs was evaluated, with particular emphasis on dislodgeable foliar residues (DFR) data and potential enantioselective degradation processes. Hypothetical outcomes are discussed as well as an evaluation of data for 5 compounds from a total of 35 DFR studies conducted under GLP, aimed at deriving DFR values for higher tier assessments. The findings indicate that possible isomerization of the active substance on leaves can be detected in DFR studies, which is essential for assessing risks to workers and residents. The results of this evaluation highlight the potential for over-conservatism of the current EFSA method for calculating uncertainty factors in non-dietary risk assessments. The EFSA method's reliance on worst-case assumptions, coupled with the lack of a formal statistical basis, can lead to overestimation of exposure, as illustrated in our theoretical considerations and supported by empirical data from DFR studies. Summary: In recent years, the markets for plant‐based products and plant protein have experienced a remarkable global expansion. The demand for plant‐based products, ranging from meat substitutes and dairy alternatives to plant‐based snacks and beverages, has surged exponentially. Soy protein, among all the plant protein resources, held a significant market share in the plant‐based industry, reflecting its popularity and widespread use. The selection of an appropriate soy fractionation process is essential for the development of cleaner and more sustainable soy‐based food products. This study compared three different soy protein fractions (SPFs) obtained through mild fractionation processes, each with unique chemical compositions and functionalities. Aqueous ethanol washing process resulted in the fractions with the highest protein purity and water holding capacity, while the simplified aqueous extraction method coupled with either an alkaline solubilisation step (SAE‐Alkaline) or an acid precipitation step (SAE‐Acid) yielded protein fractions with superior solubility, thermal stability, and gel strength. The choice of fractionation route has significant implications for the production of protein‐rich ingredients, and prioritising sustainable processing methods can contribute to the development of innovative and environmentally friendly soy‐based foods. The Folin-Ciocalteu method is a well-established and widely used assay for measuring total (poly)phenol content in food/plant products. In recent years, there has been growing interest in applying this method to human samples due to its simplicity and efficacy. However, biological matrices such as blood and urine contain several interference substances that must be eliminated beforehand. This mini-review summarizes the current state of knowledge regarding the use of the Folin-Ciocalteu assay to measure total phenolic content in human urine and blood samples, as well as the preceding cleaning methods to remove interferences. Higher total (poly)phenol levels measured by the Folin-Ciocalteu method have been associated with a decrease in mortality and several risk variables. We focus on the application of this sustainable assay as a biomarker of poly(phenol) intake and its potential use as an anti-inflammatory biomarker in clinical laboratories. The Folin-Ciocalteu method, with a clean-up extraction step, is a reliable tool for determining total (poly)phenol consumption. AbstractAnalysis of bulk wheat consignments for naturally-occurring contaminants and residues from plant protection products is common, and helps manage potential health risks to consumers. The heterogeneous distribution of some mycotoxins in wheat has been described, however the distribution of other contaminants and residues has not yet been reported. This study characterized distributions of deoxynivalenol, ochratoxin A, ergot alkaloids, cadmium, and glyphosate in nine large consignments of wheat by analysing composite samples representing sub-lots prepared from increments obtained during the entire loading process. The widest span of concentrations within a consignment occurred for ochratoxin A (<0.5–22.9 µg/kg) and ergot alkaloids (0.009–0.486 mg/kg), followed by deoxynivalenol (<0.05–0.76 mg/kg) and glyphosate (<0.3–5.01 mg/kg), and then cadmium (0.022–0.102 mg/kg). Experimental semivariograms were plotted to model the spatio-temporal correlation of analytes within consignments during loading. Analyses demonstrated that distributions of contaminants and residues within a particular consignment differed, and that distributions of a particular contaminant or residue differed among consignments. The results indicate that sampling during only a portion of a loading or unloading process can result in a composite sample that is not representative of the consignment and thus increase the risk of misclassifying a consignment as compliant. As the global population ages, the incidence of neurodegenerative diseases such as Alzheimer's and Parkinson's is rapidly rising. These diseases present a significant public health challenge, as they severely impair cognitive and motor functions, ultimately leading to a substantial reduction in quality of life and placing a heavy burden on healthcare systems worldwide. Although several therapeutic agents have been developed to manage the symptoms of these diseases, their effectiveness is often limited, and there remains an urgent need for preventive strategies. Growing evidence indicates that bioactive compounds from natural products possess neuroprotective properties through antioxidant and anti-inflammatory effects, modulating key pathways such as phosphatidylinositol 3-kinase/protein kinase B (PI3K/AKT) and brain-derived neurotrophic factor–tropomyosin receptor kinase B–cAMP response element-binding protein (BDNF-TrkB-CREB), which are crucial for neuronal survival. These compounds may also reduce amyloid-beta and tau pathology, as well as enhance cholinergic neurotransmission by inhibiting acetylcholinesterase activity. By targeting oxidative stress, neuroinflammation, and neurodegeneration, natural products offer a promising approach for both prevention and treatment. These findings suggest that natural products may be promising for preventing and treating neurodegenerative diseases. This review aims to explore the pathogenesis of neurodegenerative diseases, the limitations of current therapies, and the potential role of natural products as therapeutic agents. Different species of aphids, responsible for severe yield losses of cereal crops including wheat, (Triticum aestivum L.) are managed by insecticides, which are harmful to organisms and the environment under field conditions. Therefore, an environment friendly aphidicidal product of plant origin is required. Mentha spicata oil was found to be rich in carvone (81.88%), but the use of its oil and carvone in crop protection is lacking due to their volatility, poor solubility, and stability. A nanoformulaton not only solves these problems but also improve the efficacy and dose of the bioactive compounds. Thus, nano-emulsions of the oil and carvone prepared were characterized, and evaluated against Rhopalosiphum maidis (corn aphid) and Sitobion avenae (wheat aphid) The average droplet size of nano-emulsions of the oil and carvone was found to be 22.1 and 41.21 nm. Nano-emulsion of carvone exhibited higher aphid mortality (LC50 = 0.87–1.94 mg/mL) at 24 h and acetylcholinesterase inhibitory activity (IC50 = 0.07–3.83 mg/mL) compared to the nano-emulsion of the oil (LC50 = 2.87–2.81 mg/mL; IC50 = 1.66–5.34 mg/mL). The repellence index (RI) in nano-emulsion of essential oil was found to be higher (84.73 and 81.72%) at the highest concentration (0.05 µL/cm2) than that of carvone (77.59 and 80.98%) for R. maidis and S. avenae. Further, in silico studies also revealed the favourable binding energy (− 6.6 to − 8.5 kcal/mol) of the main compounds in the oil with acetylcholinesterase, facilitated by hydrophobic interactions and hydrogen bonding. This study suggests that the nano-emulsions of the essential oil and carvone can be explored under field conditions to establish efficacy for their utilization as aphidicidal and repellent products against aphids. Background and aims: Phytogenic bioactive plant products have shown promise in mitigating Australian pasture dieback (PDB) syndrome, a complex condition that adversely affects pasture productivity and sustainability. PDB is characterised by the progressive decline of grass, resulting in reduced soil organic matter. Recent studies have indicated that soil microbial communities play a crucial role in the remediation of affected pastures. In our previous research, the application of a phytogenic secondary metabolic product demonstrated a positive impact on soil microbial diversity, and it significantly increased pasture biomass. Building upon our previous study, we aimed to further investigate the mechanisms underlying pasture improvement through phytogenic treatment by spraying. Methods: Here, we conducted a shotgun metagenomic investigation of the soil microbiome functional pathways affected by the phytogenic treatment. Results: The application of phytogenic treatment to the PDB-affected soil resulted in a notable increase in soil microbial functional richness and diversity and showed alterations in beta diversity. Among the 65 significantly altered functional pathways, 54 showed an increase, while 11 decreased in response to the phytogenic treatment. The treatment altered the soil's functional capacity towards increased production of biomolecules, including amino acids, lipids, and cofactors, thus enhancing the soil's nutritional value. Furthermore, the phytogenic treatment significantly increased pathways involved in soil detoxification and carbon sequestration, suggesting its potential to promote soil health and carbon storage. Conclusion: Our findings contribute to a better understanding of the mechanisms involved in improving the soils affected by pasture dieback. Background: Natural products such as plants and herbs are primely opted for by the consumers these days for the treatment or mitigation of any health condition. And countless options present in our surroundings, that can offer an aid in the management and cure of many nutritional health conditions. Vigna aconitifolia (Moth bean), Eleusine coracana (Finger millet) and Chenopodium quinoa (Quinoa) are some of the examples, that are enriched with a huge amount of nutrients like vitamins and minerals (iron and calcium) that has a potential to be utilized as for the management of Iron deficiency anemia. But the limitations associated with these herbs is, their fluctuating therapeutic effects due to low solubility, poor bioavailability, and low stability. Materials and Methods: In order to overcome all these limitations, Vigna aconitifolia, Eleusine coracana and Chenopodium quinoa were formulated as nutraceutical granules (a standardized solid dosage form). These crops are well-known for their lofty nutritional potential, which includes a wide range of bioactive ingredients and amino acids, as well as minerals and vitamins. This study examined the use of various materials, such as binders (potato and maize starch), flavors, sweeteners, and other necessary components, to formulate the nutraceutical granules using wet-granulation method. The granules were then tested for different standardization parameters like micromeritic evaluation, organoleptic characterization, physico-chemical evaluation, and in vitro dissolution study. The herbal powders of V aconitifolia, E. coracana and C. quinoa were successfully formulated into nutraceutical dosage form. Results and Discussion: The results revealed that these nutraceutical granules showed improved physico-chemical, and micromeritic properties as compared to their powdered forms. In vitro dissolution profile of the granules was found to be upto 99.32%. Conclusion: These are the economical and feasible options for the conventional formulations available for the management of nutritional disorders like iron deficiency anemia due their remarkable mineral (iron) content. In agricultural landscapes, the removal of semi‐natural habitats (SNH) and the intensive use of pesticides contribute to declines of biodiversity, including crop pollinators such as bees (Hymenoptera: Apoidea). However, effects of pesticide use and landscape characteristics on bees have rarely been studied together. In this study, we investigated how SNH in the surrounding landscape, organic and conventional management, and the reduction of fungicides affect wild bee diversity in 32 vineyards in southwest Germany. We used yellow pan traps to sample bees in a crossed design of management (organic vs. conventional) and fungicide use (reduced in fungus‐resistant grape varieties vs. regular) along a gradient with increasing proportions of SNH in the surrounding landscape. Higher proportions of SNH influenced species composition of bees and increased the abundance and richness of above‐ground‐nesting species. Organic vineyards had a 49% higher abundance of bees compared to conventional vineyards. The reduction of fungicides did not affect bee diversity nor abundance. The absence of a response to fungicide intensity suggests that the benefit of organically managed vineyards to wild bees was through differences in their vegetation management, which is in line with the positive response of bees to SNH in the surrounding landscape. Synthesis and applications: Our study underlines that the local provision of diverse vegetation in vineyards and the landscape‐scale provision of suitable SNH are key factors for wild bee conservation in viticulture. In accordance with Article 6 of Regulation (EC) No 396/2005, the applicant ISK Biosciences Europe N.V. submitted a request to the competent national authority in Finland to modify the existing maximum residue level (MRL) for the active substance flonicamid in honey. The data submitted in support of the request were not found appropriate to derive an MRL proposal for honey. The assessment was complemented by an analysis of the monitoring data available from the EU monitoring programmes (conducted during 2009–2023). The results from the monitoring data analysis suggest that the current MRL is still sufficient to account for the residue uptake in honey resulting from plant protection products uses of flonicamid on melliferious crops. Adequate analytical methods for enforcement are available to control the residues of flonicamid in honey according to the residue definition as the sum of flonicamid, TFNA and TFNG, expressed as flonicamid at the validated limit of quantification (LOQ) of 0.01 mg/kg for each compound. Based on the risk assessment results, EFSA concluded that the short‐term and long‐term intake of residues in honey at a level of 0.05 mg/kg according to the monitoring data is unlikely to present a risk to consumer health. Societal Impact Statement Summary The use of chemical plant protection products must be reduced to promote sustainability in food production. One possible alternative is biological control agents (BCAs), but their efficacy under commercial conditions does not always reach the standard of chemical control agents. Previously, light has been found to induce mechanisms in bacterial BCAs that can affect their distribution and establishment. This could promote BCA efficacy. We looked into how monochromatic and polychromatic (which is what growers use) light treatments affected the occurrence of three BCAs post‐application. By combining two non‐chemical methods: a biological (BCA) and a cultural (light) control method, this offers a new integrated pest control strategy. The dynamics and functionality of beneficial and non‐beneficial, non‐phototrophic bacteria can be influenced by light quality. We investigated if light could aid the survival of three bacterial biological control agents (BCAs; Bacillus amyloliquefaciens DSM7, Pseudomonas chlororaphis 50083 and Streptomyces griseoviridis CBS904.68) in the canopy of greenhouse‐grown tomatoes at four light treatments. Tomato plants were exposed to 50 μmol m−2 s−1 of either polychromatic light (white) or monochromatic light (blue: 420 nm, green: 530 nm and red: 660 nm) using DYNA LED lamps for a total of 48 h post foliar application of the BCAs. Leaves were harvested from two levels in the canopy at the top and middle of each plant at 0, 2, 4, 8, 12, 24 and 48 h post inoculation. The occurrences of the BCAs were quantified by plate count and droplet digital PCR (ddPCR). S. griseoviridis persisted under most treatments, whereas P. chlororaphis and B. amyloliquefaciens preferred the polychromatic and green light treatments as depicted by the viable count analyses. Significant differences between the DNA and cDNA concentrations were only noted for P. chlororaphis, with prominent wavelength effects. Light exposure dose, placement in the canopy and wavelength were found to be decisive factors for BCA re‐isolation, indicating that they have different optimal light environments. SUMMARY: Plants synthesize natural products via lineage‐specific offshoots of their core metabolic pathways, including fatty acid synthesis. Recent studies have shed light on new fatty acid‐derived natural products and their biosynthetic pathways in disparate plant species. Inspired by this progress, we set out to develop tools for exploring the evolution of fatty‐acid derived products. We sampled multiple species from all major clades of euphyllophytes, including ferns, gymnosperms, and angiosperms (monocots and eudicots), and we show that the compositional profiles (though not necessarily the total amounts) of fatty‐acid derived surface waxes from preserved plant specimens are consistent with those obtained from freshly collected tissue in a semi‐quantitative and sometimes quantitative manner. We then sampled herbarium specimens representing 57 monocot species to assess the phylogenetic distribution and evolution, of two fatty acid‐derived natural products found in that clade: beta‐diketones and alkylresorcinols. These chemical data, combined with analyses of 26 monocot genomes, revealed a co‐occurrence (though not necessarily a causal relationship) between whole genome duplication and the evolution of diketone synthases from an ancestral alkylresorcinol synthase‐like polyketide synthase. Limitations of using herbarium specimen wax profiles as proxies for those of fresh tissue seem likely to include effects from loss of epicuticular wax crystals, effects from preservation techniques, and variation in wax chemical profiles due to genotype or environment. Nevertheless, this work reinforces the widespread utility of herbarium specimens for studying leaf surface waxes (and possibly other chemical classes) and reveals some of the evolutionary history of fatty acid‐derived natural products within monocots. Significance Statement: Plant chemicals are key components in our food and medicine, and advances in genomic technologies are accelerating plant chemical research. However, access to tissue from specific plant species can still be rate limiting, especially for species that are difficult to cultivate, endangered, or inaccessible. Here, we demonstrate that herbarium specimens provide a semiquantitative proxy for the cuticular wax composition of their fresh counterparts, thus reducing the need to collect fresh tissue for studies of wax chemicals and suggesting the same may also be true of other plant chemical classes. SUMMARY: Plants produce a staggering array of chemicals that are the basis for organismal function and important human nutrients and medicines. However, it is poorly defined how these compounds evolved and are distributed across the plant kingdom, hindering a systematic view and understanding of plant chemical diversity. Recent advances in plant genome/transcriptome sequencing have provided a well‐defined molecular phylogeny of plants, on which the presence of diverse natural products can be mapped to systematically determine their phylogenetic distribution. Here, we built a proof‐of‐concept workflow where previously reported diverse tyrosine‐derived plant natural products were mapped onto the plant tree of life. Plant chemical‐species associations were mined from literature, filtered, evaluated through manual inspection of over 2500 scientific articles, and mapped onto the plant phylogeny. The resulting "phylochemical" map confirmed several highly lineage‐specific compound class distributions, such as betalain pigments and Amaryllidaceae alkaloids. The map also highlighted several lineages enriched in dopamine‐derived compounds, including the orders Caryophyllales, Liliales, and Fabales. Additionally, the application of large language models, using our manually curated data as a ground truth set, showed that post‐mining processing can largely be automated with a low false‐positive rate, critical for generating a reliable phylochemical map. Although a high false‐negative rate remains a challenge, our study demonstrates that combining text mining with language model‐based processing can generate broader phylochemical maps, which will serve as a valuable community resource to uncover key evolutionary events that underlie plant chemical diversity and enable system‐level views of nature's millions of years of chemical experimentation. Significance Statement: This study introduces a novel workflow to map the distribution of natural products onto a phylogeny. It also demonstrates the effectiveness of combining text mining of the literature with large language model evaluation for constructing a "phylochemical" database that can organize vast portions of the chemical diversity present across the plant tree of life. We conducted a pot experiment using 13CO2 continuous labeling, DNA stable isotope probe technology, high-throughput sequencing, and the carbon-nitrogen-phosphorus functional gene chip to effectively track rhizosphere-deposited C and compare the microorganisms that utilize this C pool in the rhizosphere of a soybean/maize intercropping system at 21 days after labeling. The relative abundance of Caldalkalibacillus and Nesterenkonia that use rhizosphere-deposited C was significantly higher in the soybean/maize intercropping system than in monocropped soybean, but there were no significant differences between intercropped and monocropped maize. The soybean/maize intercropping system altered the composition of the microbial community that utilizes rhizosphere-deposited C and reduced the community richness. Moreover, intercropping improved the expression of functional genes associated with carbon fixation (acsH and exg) and nitrous oxide reduction (nosZ1). Overall, by tracking the flow of C from plant photosynthetic products to root exudates, our research provides new insights into identifying the microbial communities that assimilate and deposit carbon in soil. Cytochrome P450 enzymes play a crucial role as catalysts in the biosynthesis of numerous plant natural products (PNPs). Enhancing the catalytic activity of P450s in host microorganisms is essential for the efficient production of PNPs through synthetic biology. In this study, we engineered Saccharomyces cerevisiae to optimize the microenvironment for boosting the activities of P450s, including coexpression with the redox partner genes, enhancing NADPH supply, expanding the endoplasmic reticulum (ER), strengthening heme biosynthesis, and regulating iron uptake. This created a platform for the efficient production 11,20-dihydroxyferruginol, a key intermediate of the bioactive compound tanshinones. The yield was enhanced by 42.1-fold through 24 effective genetic edits. The optimized strain produced up to 67.69 ± 1.33 mg/L 11,20-dihydroxyferruginol in shake flasks. Our work represents a promising advancement toward constructing yeast cell factories containing P450s and paves the way for microbial biosynthesis of tanshinones in the future. Water hyacinth (Eichhornia crassipes) is considered a prospective free-floating aquatic plant potentially used to address current issues on food, energy, and the environment. It can grow quickly and easily in various tropical and subtropical environments as long as it has access to adequate light and water to support photosynthetic growth. Ecosystems are threatened by their invasive growth and remarkable capacity for adaptation. However, managing this plant can result in valuable products. This paper demonstrates particle technologies that might be used to utilize water hyacinths, including brake pads, fertilizer, bioenergy, animal feed, phytoremediation agents, bioplastics, and adsorbents. This study is accompanied by a discussion based on the conducted experiments and currently available literature, providing readers with a clearer understanding. Water hyacinth's capacity to absorb macro- and micro-nutrients, nitrogen, and phosphorus makes it a good plant for phytoremediation. The prospect of producing cellulose makes it prospective as a biomass energy source and livestock feeding. Further, it can be transformed into high-cellulose content particles for applications in bioplastics, brake pads, and adsorbents. The current reports regarding education of water hyacinth to student also were added. Finally, issues and suggestions for future development related to the use of water hyacinths are discussed. Transition metal oxide magnetite (Fe3O4) is recognized as a potential anode material for lithium-ion batteries owing to its high theoretical specific capacity, modest voltage output, and eco-friendly character. It is a challenging task to engineer high-performance composite materials by effectively dispersing Fe3O4 crystals with limited sizes in a well-designed supporting framework following sustainable approaches. In this work, the naturally abundant plant products sodium lignosulfonate (Lig) and sodium cellulose (CMC) were selected to coprecipitate with Fe3+ ions under mild hydrothermal conditions. The Fe-Lig/CMC intermediate sediment with an optimized microstructure can be directly converted to the Lig/CMC-derived carbon matrix-supported Fe3O4 nanocomposite sample (Fe3O4@LigC/CC). Compared with the controlled Fe3O4@LigC material, the Fe3O4@LigC/CC nanocomposite provides superior electrochemical performance in the anode, which has inspiring specific capacities of 820.6 mAh g−1 after 100 cycles under a current rate of 100 mA·g−1 and 750.5 mAh g−1 after 250 cycles, as well as more exciting rate capabilities. Ngari is a non-salted fermented fish of Manipur and was made by the indigenous people of Manipur North east India. Traditional Knowledge (TK) possessed by different communities is often closely linked to their way of life. The present study tried to document the control of microbial contaminants isolated from Ngari (A fermented fish product) by natural plants products. Two fungi were isolated from the "Ngari" stored at room temperature (150C-200C) for 45 day. Antimicrobial activity of plant extract was done by agar well diffusion method. Of 8 plants extracts, cinnamon ethanolic extract showed antifungal activity with zone of inhibition 55mm and 15mm against green coloured and black coloured fungal isolates, respectively. Mango ethanolic extract showed antifungal activity against black coloured fungal isolate with zone of inhibition 10mm. Mulberry, neen, guava, curry and stem of ginger and termaric extracts did not show any activity against the both fungal isolates. Antibiotic susceptibility pattern of microbial isolates was done by agar disc diffusion method. Ketaconazole showed the best activity against the both fungal i.e (green and black) with zone of inhibition (18mm) followed by Clotrimazole (CC) (12 and 20mm) and Itraconazole (IT) (12 and 17mm), respectively. Nystatin (NS) showed the activity only against the black fungal 13mm. Both fungal isolates were resistant to Amphotericin and Fluconazole. The Cinnamon ethanolic extract exhibited the MIC of 10% w/v against both fungal isolates. The photochemical analysis of cinnamon ethanolic extract was done and showed the presence of alkaloid, tannins and phenols and absence of flavonoid and saponins. It may be suggested from the findings that cinnamon ethanolic extract can be used as a potential source of natural antimicrobial compound to be used as food preservative. Chalcone is a ubiquitous chemical compound included in the majority of organically derived plant products. In the present research, chalcones derivatives were prepared by the reaction of alpha-hydrogenated ketones with aldehydes. This reaction is carried out in reflux for four to five hours, with ethanol frequently utilised as the solvent and NaOH as the catalyst. The prepared derivatives further characterized by UV spectroscopy and Infrared specetroscopy. The UV spectrum of chalcones is characterized by two primary absorption bands: band I and a secondary band, band II. The chalcones band typically manifests in the range of 340-390nm, with occasional smaller fluctuations or peaks observed at 300-320nm. The infrared absorptions of the chalcones C1, C2 and C3 are for Ar-(C-H) stretching band (2920-2975cm-1), Aromatic ring (=CH) bond vibration at 1525-1620cm-1. In developing countries, a key issue about assurance of the protection, quality and effectiveness of medicinal plants and herbal products has become prevalent. Plant protection products derived from plant material are proposed to be a sustainable alternative to conventional synthetic chemical pesticides. This study determines the efficacy of a commercially available bioinsecticide based on garlic (Allium sativum L.; Asparagales: Amaryllidaceae) extract against vine weevil (Otiorhynchus sulcatus F.; Coleoptera: Curculionidae) eggs and larvae in contact, fumigation and a combination of contact and fumigation bioassays under laboratory conditions. Results showed that garlic significantly reduced egg hatch rate compared to the control group when applied as a fumigant. Similarly, the egg hatch rate was reduced compared to the control group when garlic was applied as combined contact and fumigant applications. No effect was observed when the garlic product was applied as a contact application. The bioinsecticide significantly reduced larval survival when either contact or fumigant applications were used. A combined contact and fumigant effect was shown also when vine weevil eggs were exposed to the bioinsecticide for 30 days in plastic containers containing growing media. The number of larvae recovered after this period was significantly reduced compared to the control group. This study demonstrates the potential of garlic-based bioinsecticides, such as Pitcher GR, for vine weevil control. Further studies are, however, needed to determine the efficacy of such bioinsecticides under field conditions and investigate how these products can be most effectively used as a part of a wider vine weevil integrated pest management program. Background: Natural products are essential for medicinal purposes in developing countries. Traditional and contemporary medicine utilized plant products as alternative treatments for parasitic diseases. Objectives: The purpose of the investigation is to analyze and assess the bioactive compounds in Vitis vinifera leaf extracts, as well as their effect on coccidiosis. Materials and methods: Several analytical techniques were utilized, such as infrared spectroscopy (IR) and gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS). Additionally, we assessed the total phenol, tannin, flavonoid examination, and cytotoxicity of the plant extracts using an MTT assay and UV-visible spectrophotometry (UV-Vis). Moreover, the samples' levels of antioxidant activity (measured with DPPH and ABTS) were analyzed. Results: The leaf extract's GC-MS study identified many bioactive elements linked to plant secondary metabolites. Further, the total phenol, tannin, and flavonoid were 160.217 ± 0.652, 65.872 ± 0.263, and 34.0463 ± 0.545 (mg TAE/g DW), respectively. It also contains these extracts with a high antioxidant and DPPH radical scavenging activity. This reflects the number of bioactive chemicals that are present in these extracts. Conclusions: The findings of this research discuss techniques in phytochemical analysis of Vitis vinifera leaf extracts and the identification of biologically active components that support and justify the utilization of grape leaves in folk medicine in developing countries. Summary Plant‐specialized metabolism is largely driven by the oxidative tailoring of key chemical scaffolds catalyzed by cytochrome P450 (CYP450s) enzymes. Monoterpene indole alkaloids (MIAs) tabersonine and pseudo‐tabersonine, found in the medicinal plant Tabernanthe iboga (commonly known as iboga), are tailored with oxidations, and the enzymes involved remain unknown. Here, we developed a streamlined screening strategy to test the activity of T. iboga CYP450s in Nicotiana benthamiana. Using multigene constructs encoding the biosynthesis of tabersonine and pseudo‐tabersonine scaffolds, we aimed to uncover the CYP450s responsible for oxidative transformations in these scaffolds. Our approach identified two T. iboga cytochrome P450 enzymes: pachysiphine synthase (PS) and 16‐hydroxy‐tabersonine synthase (T16H). These enzymes catalyze an epoxidation and site‐specific hydroxylation of tabersonine to produce pachysiphine and 16‐OH‐tabersonine, respectively. This work provides new insights into the biosynthetic pathways of MIAs and underscores the utility of N. benthamiana and Catharanthus roseus as platforms for the functional characterization of plant enzymes. Summary: Plants, as a sessile organism, produce various secondary metabolites to interact with the environment. These chemicals have fascinated the plant science community because of their ecological significance and notable biological activity. However, predicting the complete biosynthetic pathways from target molecules to metabolic building blocks remains a challenge.Here, we propose retrieval‐augmented dual‐view retrosynthesis (READRetro) as a practical bio‐retrosynthesis tool to predict the biosynthetic pathways of plant natural products. Conventional bio‐retrosynthesis models have been limited in their ability to predict biosynthetic pathways for natural products. READRetro was optimized for the prediction of complex metabolic pathways by incorporating cutting‐edge deep learning architectures, an ensemble approach, and two retrievers.Evaluation of single‐ and multi‐step retrosynthesis showed that each component of READRetro significantly improved its ability to predict biosynthetic pathways. Revegetation emerges as a promising approach to alleviate the adverse impacts of mining residues. However, it is essential to evaluate the characteristics of these materials and select suitable plant species to ensure successful ecosystem restoration. This study aimed to investigate the effects of phosphate-mine residues (MR) on the growth, biochemical properties, and essential oil concentration of Rosmarinus officinalis L., Salvia Officinalis L., Lavandula dentata L., and Origanum majorana L. The results showed that R. officinalis L. appeared to be particularly well-suited to thriving in MR soil. Our finding also revealed that L. dentata L., O. majorana L., and S. officinalis L. grown in MR exhibited significantly lower growth performance (lower shoot length, smaller leaves, and altered root structure) and higher antioxidant activities, with an alterations of photosynthetic pigment composition. They showed a decrease in total chlorophylls when grown on MR (0.295, 0.453, and 0.562 mg g−1 FW, respectively) compared to the control (0.465, 0.807, and 0.808 mg g−1 FW, respectively); however, they produced higher essential oil content (1.8%, 3.06%, and 2.88%, respectively). The outcomes of this study could offer valuable insights for the advancement of revegetation technologies and the utilization of plant products derived from phosphate-mine residues. Chitin (Ct) is a crucial biopolymer present in fungi, algae, arthropods, and is usually obtained from crustacean shells. Chitosan (Cs) is a derivative from Ct deacetylation, and possesses numerous uses in various agro-industrial fields. Research on fungal-derived Ct and Cs is mostly focused on pharmaceutical uses, however their uses for plant disease control remain less explored. The main objective of the current study is to evaluate the possibility of using chitosan obtained from mushroom Pleurotus eryngii (Cs-Pe) for controlling some phytopathogens compared to commercial chitosan (C.Cs). This study is focused on the following key areas: (i) extracting Ct from P. eryngii mycelium and converting it to Cs through deacetylation, using both bleaching and non-bleaching methods; (ii) conducting a physico-chemical characterization and in vitro evaluation of the antimicrobial activity of the obtained Cs; (iii) performing an in vivo assessment of the phytotoxic and cytotoxic effects of Cs; and (iv) investigating in vivo the impact of the studied chitosan on fruit quality and its biocontrol efficacy against Monilinia laxa infections in plum fruits. Results showed that Cs-Pe, especially the unbleached one, displayed promising in vitro antimicrobial activity against the majority of tested pathogens. Regarding the cytotoxicity, the highest significant increase in cell abnormality percentage was observed in the case of C.Cs compared to Cs-Pe. In the in vivo study, Cs-Pe acted as a protective barrier, lowering and/or preventing moisture loss and firmness of treated plums. The studied Cs-Pe demonstrated notable efficacy against M. laxa which decreased the fruits' percentage decline. These results strongly suggest that Cs derived from P. eryngii is a potential candidate for increasing plums' shelf-life. Background: Hepatocellular carcinoma currently has the third highest mortality rate in the world. Patients with hepatocellular carcinoma are on the rise and at a younger age, but research into the pharmacological effects of cancer is mostly single-component, and natural plant products can have additive or synergistic effects that can better amplify the effects of intervention in cancer. Aim: To evaluate the synergistic therapeutic effects of 6-shogaol and curcumin against hepatocellular carcinoma line HepG2 cells. Methods: In this study, a network pharmacology approach was used to predict and validate the mol ecular targets and pathways of the hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) of 6-shogaol and curcumin in combination and to investigate their mechanism of action. The results were also validated by cellular assays. HepG2 cells were treated with 6-shogaol and curcumin as well as the combination of the two. The combination index of 6-shogaol and curcumin in HepG2 cells was calculated using Compusyn software according to the Chou-Talalay equation. The synergistic anti-cancer effect was next investigated by MTT assay, apoptosis assay and cell cycle assay. The combined anti-hepatocellular carcinoma effect of the Ras-mediated PI3K/AKT and MAPK signalling pathways was analysed using protein blotting assays. Results: A network pharmacology-based screening identified 72 core targets of 6-curcumin and curcumin in hepatocellular carcinoma, and predicted that the main signalling pathway is the Ras signalling pathway. The anti-cancer effects of 6-shogaol and curcumin were validated in cell-based assays and the optimal synergistic concentrations of 5 µmoL/L for 6-shogaol and 30 µmoL/L for curcumin were determined. 6-shogaol and curcumin synergistically blocked the cell cycle in the G2/M phase and promoted apoptosis. Immunoblot analysis confirmed for the first time the combined action of both in down-regulating the Ras-mediated PI3K/AKT and MAPK signaling pathways. In addition, 6-shogaol and curcumin acting together downregulated Cyclin-B, CDK-1, Bcl-2, and upregulated BAX. Conclusion: 6-shogaol and curcumin act synergistically to alter the morphology of hepatocellular carcinoma cells, block the cell cycle in the G2/M phase, inhibit proliferation and division, and effectively promote late apoptosis. During the growth and development of plants, a large quantity of root exudates is released into the rhizosphere, forming a microbiome capable of stimulating plant growth and productivity. The application of microbial preparations will be the cornerstone of soil improvement and obtaining high-quality plant products. The aim of this study was to determine the influence of Azotobacter vinelandii IMV B-7076, a component of the highly effective complex bacterial preparation Azogran, on the buckwheat development and exometabolite composition in the root zone. Methods. The effect of azotobacter on the growth of buckwheat plants and their exometabolite synthesis was investigated during a 14-day cultivation period in a Farreus medium under phytotron conditions. The content of photosynthetic pigments in plant leaves was determined using spectrophotometric methods. The protein content in the medium was determined by the Bradford method, carbohydrates by their interaction with phenol and sulfuric acid, and phenols by the Folin-Chokalteu reagent. Results. It was found that the cultivation of buckwheat in a medium with azotobacter significantly stimulated the growth activity of plants and the content of chlorophyll a in their leaves. Under these conditions, the content of chlorophyll b and carotenoids in buckwheat leaves increased less noticeably. During the 14-day cultivation of plants in a medium containing 107 CFU/mL of these bacteria, the protein content increased by 110.4% compared to the control, phenolic compounds by 48.8%, and carbohydrates by 266.4%. Conclusions. Azotobacter vinelandii IMV B-7076 noticeably improves the growth of buckwheat, increases the concentration of exometabolites in the medium during hydroponic cultivation. Plants and plant extracts have long been acknowledged as valuable resources for the development of therapeutic formulations for various diseases. Among them, numerous plants and plant-derived products have demonstrated cytotoxic and/or anti-tumor properties. Saffron, particularly due to its major compounds, namely crocin, crocetin, and safranal, stands out as a promising candidate in this regard. Our research undertakes a literature review, reaffirming the antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and, notably, anti-tumor properties of saffron and its major constituents. Additionally, this study examines relevant patent documents, highlighting innovative applications for saffron and its major compounds in cancer therapy. The review discusses the progress in purifying the compounds extracted from saffron and assesses their impact on cytotoxic trial outcomes, the potential synergies between certain saffron compounds and established cytotoxic molecules, and the limitations of the patents examined, particularly concerning reported clinical evidence. Researchers who focus on advances in oncology will know from our findings the evolution of the patent landscape regarding cytotoxic and/or anti-tumor therapeutic applications using saffron or its main compounds. Moreover, investigators can draw inspiration from patents leveraging traditional knowledge, particularly from Chinese medicine, to clarify specific active molecules and their mechanisms of action and can expedite the translation of these findings into clinically relevant interventions, potentially enhancing cancer therapy outcomes. The terrestrial biota is a rich source of biologically active substances whose anti-biofilm potential is not studied enough. The aim of this review is to outline a variety of terrestrial sources of antimicrobial agents with the ability to inhibit different stages of biofilm development, expecting to give some ideas for their utilization in improved anti-biofilm treatments. It provides an update for the last 5 years on anti-biofilm plant products and derivatives, essential oils, antimicrobial peptides, biosurfactants, etc., that are promising candidates for providing novel alternative approaches to combating multidrug-resistant biofilm-associated infections. Based on the reduction in bacterial adhesion to material and cell surfaces, the anti-adhesion strategy appears interesting for the prevention of bacterial attachment in combating a broad range of mono- and multispecies bacterial biofilms. So far, few studies have been carried out in this direction. Anti-biofilm coatings made by or containing biologically active products from terrestrial biota have scarcely been studied although they are of significant interest for a reduction in infections associated with medical devices. Combination therapy with commercial antibiotics and natural products is accepted now as a promising base for future advances in anti-biofilm treatment. Aims Enteric viruses are recognized as a major concern in health care and in the food sector in Canada. Novel clean-label strategies for controlling enteric viruses are sought in the food industry. In this study, we examined the antiviral potential of plant extracts and essential oils on murine norovirus 1 (MNV-1), hepatitis A virus (HAV), and herpes simplex virus 1 (HSV-1). Methods and results Inactivation of the viruses by grape seed, blueberry, green tea, and cranberry extracts and by rosemary and thyme essential oils was measured using plaque formation assay. Concentrations ranging from 50 to 200   000 ppm with a contact time of 90 min were tested. Grape seed extract at 10 000 ppm was the most effective (P < 0.05) at reducing MNV-1 and HAV infectious titers, respectively, by 2.85 ± 0.44 log10 and 1.94 ± 0.17 log10. HSV-1 titer was reduced by 3.81 ± 0.40 log10 at 1000 ppm grape seed extract. A rapid and simple method for identification of oil and fatty products of plant origin by their own fluorescence and diffuse reflection of IR radiation using colorimetry and near-IR spectroscopy is proposed. Analytical signals were recorded using 3D-printed devices with built-in UV and IR LED matrices (390 and 850 nm) and a smartphone with the PhotoMetrix PRO® application installed and FTIR spectroscopy in the near-IR region (10,000–4000 cm–1) with the NIRA attachment used for the analysis of solids. Diffuse reflectance spectra were processed using the TQ Analyst and The Unscrambler X applications. The studied objects were identified and differentiated using chemometric algorithms, i.e., principal component analysis (PCA) and hierarchical cluster analysis (HCA). The mass fraction of fat in the declared products was determined using univariate and multivariate (PLS algorithm) analyses. Adulterated butter was located separately from natural products on the PCA and HCA graphs. They did not intersect with each other on the dendrogram. Samples of butter with different milk fat mass fractions (61.5, 72.5, 82.5, and 99.0%) were used to construct a calibration relationship and determine the milk fat concentration using the PLS method and univariate analysis. The calibration error (RMSEC) were ≤1.31%; the predictive properties (RMSEP), ≤4.45%. The methods under consideration were tested with samples of butter and vegetable oil products from various manufacturers. The RMSEP values for dairy products was ≤4.97%; for margarine, >10% using multivariate analysis. The relative deviation of the results from the mass fractions of fat indicated on the packaging was ≤4.8% when using univariate analysis. This parameter for margarine was in the range 96.3–96.5%. Tea is a recommended way of administration of prescribed cannabis plant products in Denmark. We aimed to investigate the cannabinoid and terpene doses contained in different teas. We analysed tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), tetrahydrocannabinolic acid (THCA), cannabidiol (CBD), cannabidiolic acid (CBDA), and terpene concentrations in three repeated preparations of each type of tea, and in plant material. In standard tea, concentrations of THC were [median (min‐max)] 9.5 (2.3–15), 19 (13–34), and 36 (26–57) μg/mL for products with a labelled content of 6.3%, 14%, and 22% total THC (THC + THCA), respectively. The CBD concentration in tea from a product labelled with 8% total CBD (CBD + CBDA) was 7.5 (1.9–10) μg/mL. Based on this, the recommended starting amount of 0.2 L of the different teas would contain between 0.46 and 11.3 mg THC, and 0.38 to 2.0 mg CBD. Adding creamer before, but not after boiling, increased the THC and CBD concentration 2.3–4.4 and 2.1‐fold, respectively. Terpenes were detected in plant material, but not in tea. The study elucidates THC and CBD doses in different teas, which may assist the clinician's choice of cannabis product. Background: Frying makes food tasty; therefore, most people prefer the intake of fried foods to unfried foods. Oil for frying is mostly used again due to cost, and this can pose health hazards to the consumer. The aim of this study was to evaluate the quality of reused frying oils. Methods: Twenty samples of reused oils collected from fried food vendors in May 2021. Using an experimental study, the samples were analysed and Peroxide, Free Fatty Acid (FFA), Saponification, Iodine Values as well as rancidity and beta carotene were determined. Data from laboratory assays were analysed with Microsoft excel 2013 and SPSS v.26.0. Results: Moisture content was observed to decrease as median from 1.19% (0.20-4.04%) for oils reused after a day to 0.60% for oils reused after 2 days with a significant effect (pvalue= 0.049), indicating that the quality of reused frying oil was affected by repeated use. The moisture content was also observed to be higher in oils in which plant products were fried compared to those in which animal products were fried. The Peroxide Value was recorded as 16.80 (5.80-55.80) and 21.90 (11.50-32.30) mEq/kg for oils with 10-20 and 21- 40 min frying times, respectively; whilst their moisture content decreased from 0.97 (0.19- 2.55) to 0.68% (0.60-0.77%) for 10-20 and 21-40 min, respectively. The authors also observed that factors such as the duration of reuse and storage after frying, conditions of storage, type of food fried in the oil, and the period of frying per food batch impacted the quality attributes of the reused oils. The FFA composition for instance increased with the duration of use of the oils. Furthermore, oils stored in plastic bottles recorded higher FFA values compared to those stored in frying pans. Conclusion: The findings show the need for fried food vendors to reduce the duration of storage of reused frying oil, and avoid storage conditions that expose oils to excess light. Also, the development of quality standards for highly patronised oils needs to be established to ascertain the impact of low-temperature long-time and high-temperature short-time treatments of the oils among non-existent jurisdictions. For plant protection products applied as seed treatments, the risk to birds and mammals possibly feeding on such treated seeds needs to be addressed in the EU, in order to register these products for commercial use. For this purpose, the European Food Safety Food Authority (EFSA) has provided guidance on how to execute such a risk assessment. The risk assessment follows a tiered approach. In the Tier 1 risk assessment of the EFSA guidance (2023), it is assumed that birds or mammals have ad libitum access to treated seeds and exclusively feed on treated seeds. Due to this conservative assumption, the Tier I risk assessment typically indicates an unacceptable risk to birds and mammals and higher‐tier refinements are required. One option for refinement is to use data on the availability of treated seeds on the soil surface directly after drilling. Published data on seed counts are, however, limited to a few countries and crops, and often these data are not contemporary, that is, do not reflect advances in sowing technology and current agronomic practice. To address this data gap, we provide recently generated data from industry field trials (the studies were conducted from 2000 to 2022, >70% between 2019 and 2022), covering 270 fields from seven countries (Austria, France, Germany, Hungary, Poland, Spain, UK) for spring and winter cereals, winter oilseed rape, and sunflower. This comprehensive data set realistically reflects modern agronomic practice and is thus suitable for consideration in a regulatory context for refining the risk assessment for birds and mammals. In the context of sustainable agriculture, the search for soil improvers that boost crop growth without harming biodiversity is gaining much attention. Biochar, the solid residue resulting from the pyrolysis of organic material, has recently emerged as a promising bioproduct in enhancing crop yield, but there is a lack of information regarding its effects on arable biodiversity. Thus, in this study, we tested the effect of biochar application on the germination and seedling growth of cornflower (Centaurea cyanus L., Asteraceae), a threatened arable weed, under laboratory conditions. We investigated various parameters, including germination percentage (GP%), mean germination time (MGT), germination rate index (GRI), germination energy (GE%), fresh and dry weight (mg) of seedlings, and radicle length (mm) under biochar treatments at different concentrations: 0% (control), 0.1%, 0.2%, 0.5%, 1%, and 2%. Our findings revealed a significant increase in GP, GE, and GRI at biochar concentrations of 0.5% and 1%. MGT slightly increased at 0.1% biochar. Seedling fresh weight was unaffected by biochar application, whereas seedling dry weight exhibited a significant increase at 0.5% biochar. Radicle length showed a substantial increase under 0.1% biochar on day one, and was significantly higher at 0.2% and 1% biochar on day two. However, by day three, no more statistically significant differences in radicle length were observed between biochar-treated diaspores and controls (i.e., biochar had positive effects only in the first stages). These results suggest that the application of biochar at intermediate concentrations (0.5% and 1%) overall provides the most benefit to the germination and seedling growth of C. cyanus. Imidacloprid, one of the latest members of the neonicotinoids, is a widely used synthetic organic insecticide. In this study, it was aimed to reveal the effects of 2 ppm, 4 ppm, and 8 ppm imidacloprid on antioxidant enzymes and lipid peroxidation in Helianthus annuus L. Tarsan-1018 oilseed sunflower leaves. As a result of the applications, sunflower leaves were collected and frozen in liquid nitrogen, then stored at -40 °C until analyses were conducted. Sunflower seeds were a registered variety and were obtained from Trakya Agricultural Research Institute. Imidacloprid were applied as foliar to the Sunflower plant grown under controlled conditions and samples were taken at 24. 48. and 72. hours. Superoxide dismutase (SOD), catalase (CAT), glutathione s-transferase (GST), glutathione (GSH), oxidized glutathione (GSSG) and malondialdehyde (MDA) analyzes were performed in the samples taken after the applications. As a result, it was determined that imidacloprid had different effects on the biochemical parameters of sunflower plant leaves. It was understood that imidacloprid used in ppm doses stimulated antioxidant defense and created stress responses in the plant, and as with all plant protection products, the importance of proper dosage and controlled use must not be overlooked.
