2. Multiferroic phase transition near room temperature in BiFeO3 films

Abstract

In multiferroic BiFeO3 thin films grown on highly mismatched LaAlO3 substrates, we reveal the coexistence of two differently distorted polymorphs that leads to striking features in the temperature dependence of the structural and multiferroic properties. Notably, the highly distorted phase quasi-concomitantly presents an abrupt structural change, transforms from a hard to a soft ferroelectric and transitions from antiferromagnetic to paramagnetic at 360+/-20 K. These coupled ferroic transitions just above room temperature hold promises of giant piezoelectric, magnetoelectric and piezomagnetic responses, with potential in many applications fields.

Abstract

In 4H-SiC, damage created by helium implantation at high fluence (5 X 10(super 16) ions cm(super -2) and high energy (1.6 MeV) is studied using different techniques of electron microscopy all along the ion path. The strain profile, determined using the large angle convergent beam electron diffraction, showed a strong correlation with the nuclear stopping curve given by SRIM simulation.

Abstract

We demonstrate that the helium density and corresponding pressure can be modified in single nano-scale bubbles embedded in semiconductors by using the electron beam of a scanning transmission electron microscope as a multifunctional probe: the measurement probe for imaging and chemical analysis and the irradiation source to modify concomitantly the pressure in a controllable way by fine tuning of the electron beam parameters. The control of the detrapping rate is achieved by varying the experimental conditions. The underlying physical mechanisms are discussed; our experimental observations suggest that the helium detrapping from bubbles could be interpreted in terms of direct ballistic collisions, leading to the ejection of the helium atoms from the bubble. Abstract

By using ion beam sputtering, TiN/TiAl(N) multilayers of various modulation wavelengths (Λ=8, 13, and 32 nm) were deposited onto silicon substrates at room temperature. After annealing at 600 °C in vacuum, one obtains for Λ=13 nm a (Ti,Al)N/Ti2AlN multilayer as it is evidenced from x-ray diffraction, high resolution transmission electron microscopy, and energy filtered electron imaging experiments. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) experiments show that the as-deposited TiAl sublayers contain a noticeable amount of nitrogen atoms which mean concentration varies with the period Λ. They also evidenced the diffusion of aluminum into TiN sublayers after annealing. Deduced from these observations, we propose a model to explain why this solid-state phase transformation depends on the period Λ of the multilayer. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

The structure and optical response of Ag nanoparticles capped with dielectric BN, Al2O3, and Y2O3 layers have been studied. The morphological evolution of the nanoparticles has been investigated in detail by high-angle annular dark-field (HAADF) imaging in a scanning transmission electron microscope and by optical transmittance measurements and simulations of surface-plasmon resonances. We show that the quantitative analysis of plane-view HAADF images enables the average morphology of individual embedded nanoparticles to be revealed. It thus provides a simple method to investigate capping-layer effects, which are demonstrated to be characterized by a substantial reduction of the aspect ratio of the nanoparticles and have been evidenced to strongly depend on the nature of the cap as well as on the size of the nanoparticles. These results suggest that both the morphological and optical properties of noble metal nanoparticles can be tuned by using capping-layer effects and by choosing capping materials with appropriate physicochemical and electronic properties. Abstract

TiN/TiAl(N) multilayers of various modulation wavelengths are deposited onto silicon substrates at room temperature by using ion beam sputtering. Depending on the nitrogen concentration [C.sub.N] inside TiAl layers and on the modulation wavelengths, the annealing has induced a solid-state phase transformation that has involved a complex diffusion mechanism.

Abstract

The paper provides the properties of single crystalline 4H-SiC under helium implantation at temperatures of implantation up to 750 ◦C and fluences in the range 5×1015-1×1017 cm−2. The microstructure evolution was studied by transmission electron microscopy cross- section and X-ray diffraction experiments. The mechanical property changes were investigated by using nanoindentation tests followed by atomic force microscopy observations and by using tribological tests. At elevated temperature of implantation and/or in the low fluence regime at room temperature where only the strained state of SiC is obtained, SiC becomes more resistant to crack formation but no significant change in mechanical properties is seen. At room temperature with increasing fluence the damage accumulation leads to the amorphous state for which a strong degradation of the mechanical properties is observed. At elevated temperature of implantation, amorphization is avoided and a thermally activated saturation of the strain is observed in the near surface region whereas defect accumulation occurs near the maximum of damage. Upon annealing subsequent to room temperature implantation, the near surface strain progressively relaxes while the helium ions agglomerate into platelets around the maximum of strain. These platelets evolve into bubble clusters at temperatures where the vacancies become mobile. Under particular conditions of implantation (high fluence and elevated temperature) the swelling of the surface increases during annealing due to the growth of bubbles and the formation of stacking faults resulting from the migration of interstitials towards the maximum of damage. © 2009 WILEY-VCH Verlag GmbH & Co.
