Abstract

ADvanced Astronomy for HELIophysics (ADAHELI) is a Small Mission to study the structure and fast dynamics of the low solar atmosphere, performing Visible-NIR monochromatic and broad-band observations. The mission will achieve millimeter full disk observations as well. The ADAHELI Team has succesfully completed, in December 2008, the Phase A study awarded by the Italian Space Agency (ASI). The Interferometer for SOlar Dynamics (ISODY), on board the ADAHELI satellite, comprises a Gregorian telescope and its focal plane suite. The advanced design focal plane suite uses fast CMOS cameras for investigating photospheric and chromospheric fast dynamics and structure. ISODY is equipped with a pioneering focal plane suite composed of a spectral channel, based upon a tandem of Fabry-Perot interferometers operating in the visible-NIR spectral region, a broad band channel for high resolution imaging, and a correlation tracker used as an image stabilization system. ADAHELI's mission profile has been tailored to limit the spacecraft's radial velocity in the Sunward direction, to not exceed ±4 km/s, during 95% of the yearly orbit, to allow a continuous use of the on-board interferometer.

Abstract

This paper deals with the readout electronics needed by superconductor Microwave Kinetic Inductance Detectors (MKIDs). MKIDs are typically implemented in the form of cryogenic-cooled high quality factor microwave resonator. The natural frequency of these resonators changes as a millimeter or sub-millimeter wave radiation impinges on the resonator itself. A quantitative system model of the readout electronics (very similar to that of a vector network analyzer) has been implemented under ADS environment and tested by several simulation experiments. The developed model is a tool to further optimize the readout electronic and to design the frequency allocation of parallel-connected MKIDs resonators. The applications of MKIDs will be in microwave and millimeter-wave radiometric imaging as well as in radio-astronomy focal plane arrays.

Abstract

This paper deals with 24-GHz circuits developed by exploiting a system-in-package approach. In order to reduce the cost as much as possible, a standard multilayer printed circuit board (PCB) technology has been adopted. Such a circuit consists of a package built utilizing a 0.3-mm thick fiber-glass substrate with 3.38 relative permittivity. The contacts between the substrate and the mother board are realized along the package perimeter exploiting 0.6-mm via-hole metalization and half halo shield soldering pad. First, the developed package is simulated and optimized by means of commercial electromagnetic software. Then a prototype is fabricated and measured. The obtained results show that the whole frequency band from DC to 30 GHz can be covered. A packaged 26.5-mm straight microstrip line exhibits an |S11| value better than -12 dB and an |S21| value of about -1.4 dB at 24 GHz. This value is only 0.6-dB worse than that of the unpackaged line. A single-balanced diode mixer and a low-noise amplifier (LNA) for industrial, scientific, and medical applications are then designed. The integration of these building blocks within the PCB package is finally demonstrated and experimentally verified. The packaged mixer shows a 6.8-dB conversion loss.
