Background: To investigate the impact of the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic on hospitalizations for neonatal infectious diseases.Methods: We analyzed data for neonatal inpatients admitted at a tertiary academic hospital with a principal diagnosis of an infectious disease during January 2015 to December 2020. We compared hospitalizations in 2020 (COVID-19 cohort), corresponding with the impact of COVID-19 pandemic and associated containment measures, and the comparable 2015 to 2019 (pre-COVID-19 cohort).Results: 14,468 cases admitted for neonatal infectious diseases were included in our study, with 1201 cases in the COVID-19 cohort and 13,267 cases in the pre-COVID-19 cohort. The leading causes of hospitalizations for neonatal infectious diseases remain being respiratory tract infections (median ratio = 0.461, 95% CI 0.335-0.551), sepsis (median ratio = 0.292, 95% CI 0.263-0.361), gastric intestinal infections (median ratio = 0.095, 95% CI 0.078-0.118) and dermatologic infections (median ratio = 0.058, 95% CI 0.047-0.083). The seasonality of neonatal infectious disease hospitalizations could be obviously observed, with the total number and the overall rate of hospitalizations for neonatal infectious diseases in the first and fourth quarters greater than that of hospitalizations for neonatal infectious diseases in the second and third quarters in each year (1362.67 ± 360.54 vs 1048.67 ± 279.23, P = 0.001; 8176/20020 vs 6292/19369, P < 0.001, respectively). Both the numbers and the proportions of hospitalizations for neonatal infectious diseases in different quarters of the COVID-19 cohort significantly decreased as compared with those forecasted with the data from the pre-COVID-19 cohort: the numbers per quarter (300.25 ± 57.33 vs 546.64 ± 100.43, P-value = 0.006), the first quarter (0.34 vs 0.40, P = 0.002), the second quarter (0.24 vs 0.30, P = 0.001), the third quarter (0.24 vs 0.28, P = 0.024), and the fourth quarter (0.29 vs 0.35, P = 0.003).Conclusions: Despite the outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic, the leading causes of hospitalizations for neonatal infectious diseases remain unchanged. The seasonality of neonatal infectious disease hospitalizations could be obviously observed. The numbers as well as the overall rates of hospitalizations for neonatal infectious diseases in the COVID-19 cohort dramatically declined with the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic and its mitigation measures. Background: Intrauterine infection/inflammation plays an important role in the development of lung injury and bronchopulmonary dysplasia (BPD) in preterm infants, While a multifactorial genesis is likely, mechanisms involved in BPD after intrauterine infection/inflammation are largely unknown. Recent studies have suggested microRNAs (miRNAs) are likely to play a role. Therefore, this study aimed to study the effects and mechanisms of intrauterine infection/inflammation on lung development, and to identify miRNAs related to lung injury and BPD.Methods: An animal model of intrauterine infection/inflammation was established with pregnant SD rats endocervically inoculated with E.coli. The fetal and neonatal rats were observed at embryonic day (E) 17, 19, 21 and postnatal day (P) 1, 3, 7, 14, respectively. Body weight, lung weight, the expression levels of NLRP3, TNF-α, IL-lβ, IL-6, VEGF, Collagen I, SP-A, SP-B and SP-C in the lung tissues of fetal and neonatal rats were measured. Expression profiles of 1218 kinds of miRNAs in the lungs of neonatal rats were detected by miRNA microarray technique. Target genes of the identified miRNAs were predicted through online software.Results: Intrauterine infection/inflammation compromised not only weight development but also lung development of the fetal and neonatal rats. The results showed significantly increased expression of NLRP3, TNF-α, IL-1β, IL-6, Collagen I, and significantly decreased expression of VEGF, SP-A, SP-B and SP-C in the fetal and neonatal rat lung tissues in intrauterine infection group compared to the control group at different observation time point (P < 0.05). Forty-three miRNAs with significant differential expression were identified. Possible target genes regulated by the identified miRNAs are very rich.Conclusions: Intrauterine infection/inflammation results in lung histological changes which are very similar to those observed in BPD. Possible mechanisms may include NLRP3 inflammasome activation followed by inflammatory cytokines expression up-regulated, inhibiting the expression of pulmonary surfactant proteins, interfering with lung interstitial development. Heat stress causes many pathophysiological responses in the brain, including neuroinflammation and cognitive deficits. β‐Hydroxybutyric acid (BHBA) has been shown to have neuroprotective effects against inflammation induced by lipopolysaccharide. The aim of the present study was to evaluate the effects of BHBA on neuroinflammation induced by heat stress, as well as the underlying mechanisms. Mice were pretreated with vehicle, BHBA or minocycline (positive control group) and followed by heat exposure (43°C) for 15 min for 14 days. In mice subjected to heat stress, we found that treatment with BHBA or minocycline significantly decreased the level of serum cortisol, the expressions of heat shock protein 70 (HSP70), and the density of c‐Fos+ cells in the hippocampus. Surprisingly, the ethological tests revealed that heat stress led to cognitive dysfunctions and could be alleviated by BHBA and minocycline administration. Further investigation showed that BHBA and minocycline significantly attenuated the activation of microglia and astrocyte induced by heat stress. Pro‐inflammatory cytokines were attenuated in the hippocampus by BHBA and minocycline treatment. Importantly, compared with the heat stress group, mice in the BHBA treatment group and positive control group experienced a decrease in the expressions of toll‐like receptor 4 (TLR4), phospho‐p38 (p‐p38), and nuclear factor kappa B (NF‐κB). Our results elucidated that BHBA inhibits neuroinflammation induced by heat stress by suppressing the activation of microglia and astrocyte, and modulating TLR4/p38 MAPK and NF‐κB pathways. Intrauterine infection is an important risk factor for bronchopulmonary dysplasia (BPD). BPD is characterized by arrested lung alveolarization and impaired pulmonary vascularization. The Notch4 signaling pathway is a key regulator of vascular remodeling and angiogenesis. Therefore, the presents study investigated the expression of Notch4, delta-like canonical Notch ligand 4 (Dll4) and related factors in an in vivo rat model and in rat pulmonary microvascular endothelial cells (PMVECs) in vitro, to study the mechanisms by which intrauterine infection affects rat lung development. A rat model of intrauterine infection was established by endocervical inoculation with Escherichia scoli on embryonic day 15. The date of birth was counted as postnatal day 0 (P0). Then, the lung tissues were collected from pups at days P3-P14. The expression of Notch4, Dll4 and related factors was measured by reverse transcription-quantitative PCR and western blotting. In addition, the γ-secretase inhibitor DAPT was used to examine the effect of Notch4 signaling on PMVECs. Intrauterine E. coli infection impaired normal lung development, as indicated by decreased microvessel density, fewer alveoli, fewer secondary septa, and larger alveoli compared with the control group. Furthermore, Notch4, Dll4 and NF-κB levels were significantly increased in the E. coli-infected group at P3 compared with the control group. Similarly, the mRNA expression levels of fetal liver kinase 1 (Flk-1, a VEGF receptor) were significantly increased in the E. coli-infected group at P3 and P7. In PMVECs, the inhibition of Notch4 signaling contributed to decreases in lipopolysaccharide (LPS)-induced expression of VEGF and its receptors. Furthermore, the inhibition of Notch4/Dll4 signaling accelerated cell proliferation and decreased the apoptosis rate of LPS-induced PMVECs. LPS-induced NF-κB expression in PMVECs was also attenuated by the Notch4/Dll4 inhibitor. • Isotopes are used to identify the origin of south-east Asian durian. • Four south-east Asian countries which supply durian to China were investigated. • Durian core had a higher traceability accuracy than durian pulp. • Higher origin recognition and predictive ability were achieved using LDA. Determining the geographical origin of specialty fruits imported into China is important to protect the legitimate rights and interests of consumers against mislabeled origin fruits and may provide a regulatory tool to verify fruit sold into international markets. This study aims to establish an accurate and effective method to identify the geographical origin of south-east Asian durian, which could be further used to improve the traceability of similar imported fruits. In this study, 73 durian were collected from Malaysia, Thailand, Cambodia and Vietnam. We analyzed durian core and pulp using five stable isotopes (δ 15N, δ 13C, δ 34S, δ 2H and δ 18O) and elemental contents: nitrogen (% N), carbon (% C) and sulfur (% S). Two way-ANOVA (two-way analysis of variance) was used to identify major origin differences for each variable. Linear Discriminant Analysis (LDA) and Artificial Neural Network (ANN) models were used as exploratory techniques and classification parametrics. Two way-ANOVA showed significant differences (p < 0.05) between the geographical origin and durian tissue type. The durian core afforded better origin traceability than durian pulp. LDA achieved durian origin accuracy rates of 98.6 % and 97.3 % for the testing and training sets respectively by combining stable isotopes and elemental contents. ANN gave higher accuracy rates than LDA, correctly identifying durian origin with an accuracy of 100 % for the training set, and 94.4 % on the testing set. This research found stable isotopes and elemental compositions could be used to potentially discriminate the geographical origins of durian from four south-east Asian countries. [Display omitted] • Metallogenic materials and reduced sulfur primarily originated from ore-bearing carbonate rocks. • The precipitation of sulfides was jointly controlled by the W/R reaction and TSR process. • The metallogenic fluids exhibit an evolutionary trend from the metamorphic basement to ore-hosting carbonate rocks. • The Maoping deposit was formed within the late Triassic compressive tectonic setting, with the involvement of Emeishan magmatism. The Maoping Pb-Zn deposit is spatially associated with the late Permian Emeishan basalts and structurally controlled by the NE-trending reverse fault-anticline tectonic system. Nevertheless, there remains limited comprehension of its genetic association with the Emeishan magmatism, as well as the coupling relationship between the overall metallogenic processes and geodynamic evolution. In order to clarify these scientific issues, the syn -ore hydrothermal calcites, sulfides, and sulfates were systematically collected from the representative No. I ore body at different elevations in the Maoping deposit for bulk C-O-S and in situ S-Pb isotopic analyses. Bulk C-O isotopic compositions of syn -ore calcite (δ13C V-PDB = − 4.94 to −0.81‰, δ18O SMOW = +17.66 to +21.16‰) and associated fluids (δ13C V-PDB = −4.56 to −0.48‰, δ18O SMOW = +8.63 to +12.13‰) indicate that C in fluids was mainly derived from ore-bearing carbonate rocks, whereas O was generated by fluid/rock (W/R) interaction process between initial fluids and carbonate rocks. Such process also triggered carbonate dissolution and syn -ore calcite precipitation. In situ Pb isotopic ratios of galena (208Pb/204Pb = 39.116–39.425, 207Pb/204Pb = 15.742–15.767 and 206Pb/204Pb = 18.603–18.753) are more comparable with those of ore-bearing sedimentary rocks, while in situ and bulk S isotopic compositions (δ34S Py+Sp = +20.06 to +23.86‰; δ34S Gn = +17.26 to +18.44‰) of sulfides exhibit high consistency with those of sulfates (δ34S Brt = +17.01 to +19.07‰) within the ore-bearing strata. This suggests that the majority of metallogenic materials and reduced sulfur originated from this source. Meanwhile, the S-Pb isotopic data and relatively high ore-forming temperature (206 ℃) further reveal that the ore-bearing fluids underwent gradual migrated and evolved from the basement to the ore-hosting strata. The Emeishan magmatism not only provided the majority of the thermal power for the fluid circulation, but also contributed a portion of the ore-forming fluids and materials. During the late Triassic, ore-forming fluids migrated along compresso-shear reverse faults to coeval secondary extensional ore-hosting structures due to regional compressive tectonic stresses caused by the Indosinian orogeny and Xuefengshan intraplate orogeny. The mixing of metal-rich hydrothermal fluids with the marine evaporites (mainly gypsum) within sedimentary rocks first triggered thermos-chemical sulfate reduction (TSR) process. Abstract β-lactoglobulin (β-lg), the predominant protein in bovine whey, was chemically modified by (−)-epigallocatechin-3-gallate (EGCG) to develop a biomacromolecule with antioxidant activity. The EGCG-modified β-lg was characterized by SDS-PAGE, MALDI-TOF MS and intrinsic fluorescence spectroscopy. The antioxidant properties of EGCG-modified β-lg was assessed using DPPH radical scavenging activity, iron chelating ability, and inhibition of Cu2+-induced LDL oxidation. SDS-PAGE and MALDI-TOF MS results indicated the dimerization of β-lg after EGCG modification. Intrinsic fluorescence spectra suggested that EGCG modification caused an alteration in the conformational structure of β-lg. The results demonstrated that EGCG-modified β-lg possessed great antioxidant potential in terms of scavenging DPPH radical and chelating ferrous ion. Furthermore, the EGCG-modified β-lg showed a protective effect against LDL peroxidation. The results indicate that EGCG-modified β-lg could provide significant health benefits as an antioxidant. BACKGROUND: Soy protein isolate (SPI) has promising applications in various food products because of its excellent functional properties and nutritional quality. The structural and emulsifying properties of covalently modified SPI by (−)‐epigallocatechin‐3‐gallate (EGCG) were investigated. RESULTS: SPI was covalently modified by EGCG under alkaline conditions. SDS‐PAGE analysis revealed that EGCG modification caused crosslinking of SPI proteins. Circular dichroism spectra demonstrated that the secondary structure of SPI proteins was changed by EGCG modification. In addition, the modifications resulted in the perturbation of the tertiary structure of SPI as evidenced by intrinsic fluorescence spectra and surface hydrophobicity measurements. Oil‐in‐water emulsions of modified SPI had smaller droplet sizes and better creaming stability compared to those from unmodified SPI. CONCLUSION: The covalent modification by EGCG improved the emulsifying property of SPI. A simple, sensitive, accurate and affordable rapid detection of meat species authentication is urgently needed in food industry. In this study, a cross priming amplification (CPA) combining nucleic acid test strip (CPA-Strip) assay for rapid detection of mutton from meat mixture were developed and its feasibility was investigated. In an isothermal CPA system, cytochrome b ( cytb ) gene as target was amplified at 63 °C for 60 min. The nucleic acid strip was able to show the corresponding test line in the presence of target gens in 5 min. Non-targeting gene interference was not evident. The CPA-Strip has been applied for the detection of 0.1–100% mutton in a thermal treated meat mixtures with a detection limit of a detect limit of 1%. Chinese steamed bread (CSB) is a staple food item produced through steaming fermented dough. High-amylose maize starch (HAMS) is a natural source of resistant starch and dietary fiber. The feasibility of using HAMS with 80% amylose content to formulate northern style CSB was reported. Adding HAMS (up to 10%) had minimal influences on the color and texture of CSB. Specific volume and spread ratio of CSB were reduced by 10 − 20% and 10 − 13%, respectively. Increasing HAMS concentration from 2 to 10% decreased the staling rate of CSB by 8 − 48%. CSB with and without HAMS had a 3-day mould-free shelf-life. Sensory evaluation showed that the overall acceptability of CSB containing HAMS (up to 6%) were comparable with control. Organoleptic, textural, and shelf life properties of CSB with 2% HAMS substitution were similar to the control. Practical Applications Adding HAMS could improve the shelf life of CSB without negatively affecting the sensory acceptability. The results of this study suggest the possibility of expanding the HAMS application and CSB in functional food market. Background: Much attention has been paid to the quality of life (QOL) in dialysis patients worldwide. However, differences in QOL between peritoneal dialysis (PD) and hemodialysis (HD) patients have not been clearly identified. The objectives of this study were to compare the differences of QOL between PD and HD patients, and to investigate factors contributing to QOL in the Chinese population. Methods: All patients who received PD or HD more than 3 months were enrolled in the study. The demographic and clinical data were also obtained. SF-36 was used to assess QOL. Results: A total of 190 (91.8%) of 207 dialysis patients were enrolled in the study. PD patients had markedly lower scores on role-physical (RP) and bodily pain (BP) domains than HD patients, but had remarkably higher scores on role-emotional (RE) domain ( p < 0.05). While the scores of physical component summary (PCS) and mental component summary (MCS) showed no differences between the two groups ( p > 0.05). The results of the multiple linear regression analysis indicated that age and cerebrovascular disease had negative correlations with PCS ( p < 0.01), whereas the serum prealbumin level had positive correlation with PCS ( p < 0.05). The married status was negatively associated with MCS ( p < 0.01). But the higher education level was positively associated with MCS ( p < 0.01). Conclusions: There were no significant differences on QOL between the two dialysis modalities. The possible factors related to QOL were age, cerebrovascular disease, marital status, education, and serum prealbumin levels. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract: Novel BOPIM (boron 2-(2′-pyridyl)imidazole complex) derivatives with large Stokes shift were efficiently synthesized through two-step reactions, starting from commercially available 2-pyridinecarboxaldehyde and α-diketone. The dyes exhibit high fluorescent intensity in solution and also in solid state due to the intermolecular non-planar interactions. According to X-ray single crystal measurements, the non-covalent interactions (such as C–H⋯F–B, etc.) play important role in inhibiting planar π–π stacking, and the existence of terminal phenyl rings increases the electronic density of π system, which facilitates the charge transfer from the electron-donating π system to the electron-accepting boron moiety. Introduction: A high body mass index (BMI) is a positive predictor of outcome in hemodialysis. But reports for peritoneal dialysis (PD) have been less numerous. The aim of the present investigation was to study the association between BMI and survival among PD patients and to discuss the main risk factors affecting survival. Materials and methods: A total of 159 patients who received PD from 1 January 2006 to 31 December 2010 at the Department of Nephrology in the Third Affiliated Hospital of Soochow University were enrolled in the study. Blood samples and baseline characteristics of the study cohort were obtained at the start of PD. Patient survival status was recorded through 31 December 2010. Results: Patients were stratified into two groups as normal weight (BMI, 18.5-24.9) and overweight (BMI, 25.0-29.9). Kaplan-Meier survival curve revealed that the normal weight patients had survival advantage over overweight patients ( p < 0.01, by log-rank test). Cox proportional hazard models revealed that BMI, age, diabetes mellitus, coronary vascular disease, congestive heart failure and lipoprotein(a) (Lp(a)) were significant risk factors associated with all-cause mortality ( p < 0.05). After adjustment for these covariates, survival was consistently higher for normal weight patients ( p < 0.01). Furthermore, the study demonstrated that normal weight patients had lower serum Lp(a) ( p < 0.05), C-reactive protein (CRP) ( p < 0.05), and peritonitis rate ( p < 0.05) compared with overweight patients. Conclusion: The results indicated that normal BMI at the commencement of PD had significant survival advantage in our study. Nitrogen dynamics and budgets in a clay loam soil (Meadow Aqualf) in the North China Plain were investigated in a winter wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) and maize (Zea mays L.) cropping system comparing the effects of four N rates (0, 120, 240 and 360 kg N ha−1 as urea) applied twice to each crop over 2 years. Ammonium nitrogen (NH4-N) in the soil profile remained at a low and constant level (except in the surface 20 cm layer) following application of fertilizer N. In contrast, nitrate nitrogen (NO3-N) levels were significantly altered by the rate of applied N. A strong tendency of NO3-N to move from the surface layer to the lower layers (20–100 cm) was observed during the wheat and maize growth seasons in treatments of 240 and 360 kg N ha−1 per crop (N240 and N360). The amounts of NO3-N accumulated in the soil profile were significantly higher in N240 and N360 than those in N0 and N120 (treatments receiving 0 and 120 kg N ha−1 per crop). After 2 years, soil NO3-N levels at 0–300 cm depth in N120, N240 and N360 amounted to 336, 815 and 1141 kg ha−1, respectively, with more than half of these amounts distributed in the 100–300 cm layer. The calculated total N balance indicates that most fertilizer N was available as NO3-N in the top 300 cm of the soil profile using traditional fertilization and irrigation practices. Over the subsequent 2 years, N losses were calculated to be relatively low in N120 but significantly higher in N240 and N360. Measured gaseous N losses showed that NH3 volatilization and denitrification comprised only a small fraction of total N losses during the 2-year rotation, while NO3-N leaching from the top 100 cm of the soil profile accounted for most N losses across all N rates and experimental years. The N budget showed that accumulation and/or leaching of NO3-N below 100 cm depth (beyond the reach of most roots) was the main pathway for N losses in the winter wheat–maize cropping system. The recommended N application rate of 120 kg N ha−1 minimized soil NO3-N accumulation and leaching losses while maintaining high yields and N utilization by winter wheat and maize. Adulteration of high-quality meat with their cheaper counterparts can be minimized by rapid and reliable methods for detecting meat species. Here an isothermal cross-primer amplification (CPA) technique combined with colloidal gold nucleic acid test strips (CPA strips) was developed to differentiate cow, sheep, arctic fox, and pig meat. A simple primer design for multiplex differentiation using a universal single-labeled CPA primer system and four detection-level species-specific labeling primers were analyzed by colloidal gold-based test strip assay. Moreover, simultaneous detection of fox and pig meat on a double-test line strip was feasible. The CPA strip assay indicated a lower amounts sensitivity of 0.3 ng DNA when one targeted species was tested and a detection limit of 1% when arctic fox meat was detected in the meat mixtures. Using a minimal set of primers, this study provides a promising tool for detecting the species of different types of meat using a constant temperature amplification technology.
