Most people living with HIV need antiretroviral therapy to control their infection and experience viral relapse in case of treatment interruption, because of viral reservoir (proviruses) persistence. Knowing that proviruses are very diverse and most of them are defective in treated individuals, we aimed to characterize the HIV blood reservoirs of posttreatment controllers (PTCs), rare models of drug-free remission, in comparison with spontaneous controllers and treated individuals.

Evidentiality, i.e. the linguistic encoding of the mode of access to information (direct perception, inference, hearsay), despite not being fully grammaticalized in English and French, is expressed through a variety of means. This paper seeks to determine how a relatively non-salient concept in the source and target languages can be acquired by L2 learners. Using an oral elicited narrative task, we determine what markers of direct perception and inference are commonly used by native speakers of French (n = 10) and English (n = 10) and L2 learners of those two languages (at three levels of proficiency, n = 10 per group), and at which level they emerge. Our results point to a much more frequent use of inferential markers than direct perception markers, to slightly different patterns of evidential marking in French and in English, and to a late emergence of evidential markers in the speech of learners, who display sensitivity to their discursive functions, with types and tokens increasing as a function of proficiency level.

International audience; Background: We compared the prevalence of frailty among aging people living with HIV (PLHIV) with people without HIV from the ANS EP58 HAND 55–70 Study.Methods: Cross-sectional multicentric study which consecutively included 200 PLHIV and 1000 people without HIV from the French national CONSTANCES cohort, matched on age, sex, and education level. PLHIV were aged 55–70 years, with a HIV viral load < 50 copies/mL and a lymphocyte T-CD4 level > 200 cells/µL for the last 24 and 12 months, respectively. We measured frailty (>2 items) and prefrailty (one or 2 items) using a proxy of the 5-item Fried score. Multivariate logistic regression was performed to assess the association between HIV and frailty/prefrailty, adjusting for demographic, social, behavioral, and comorbidity confounders.Results: Outcome measures were available for 192 PLHIV and 822 people without HIV. The median age was 62 years, and 84.9% were men. Among PLHIV, the median CD4 cell count was 645.5 cells/µL. Prevalence of frailty/prefrailty was 5.73%/57.3% in PLHIV vs. 1.73%/52.2% in people without HIV, respectively. HIV was associated with prefrailty/frailty [odds ratio = 1.89; 95% confidence interval = 1.37 to 2.61), but after adjusting for social and behavioral factors and comorbidities, HIV was not significantly associated with prefrailty/frailty (odds ratio = 1.24; 95% confidence interval: = 0.84 to 1.81). In PLHIV only, frailty/prefrailty was associated with depressive symptomatology, kidney disease, and time since HIV infection.Conclusions: Prevalence of frailty is increased in aging PLHIV with well-controlled HIV disease, but other factors than HIV are predominant, particularly depression and comorbidities.

Background There are limited data on the comparative prevalence of neurocognitive impairment (NCI) in aging people living with human immunodeficiency virus (PLHIV) and people not living with HIV. Methods This was a cross-sectional study of PLHIV randomly matched by age (±4 years), gender, and education with 5 HIV-uninfected individuals from the CONSTANCES cohort. PLHIV were fluent in French and sequentially included during routine outpatient visits if aged 55–70 years, with HIV viral load Results Two hundred PLHIV were matched with 1000 controls. Median age was 62 years, and 85% were men. In PLHIV, the median T-CD4 lymphocyte level was 650 cells/µL, and median nadir T-CD4 lymphocyte level was 176 cells/µL. NCI was found in 71 (35.5%) PLHIV and in 242 (24.2%) controls (odds ratio [OR], 1.74; 95% confidence interval [CI], 1.25, 2.41). After adjusting for confounders, HIV remained significantly associated with NCI (OR, 1.50; 95% CI, 1.04, 2.16). Adjusted results were similar with NCI defined by MNC (ORMNC, 2.95; 95% CI, 1.13, 3.50) or −1.5 SD (OR−1.5, 2.24; 95% CI, 1.39, 3.62). Conclusions In this matched study of aging individuals, HIV was significantly associated with an increased risk of NCI after adjusting for major confounders. Results were confirmed with more stringent NCI classifications. Clinical Trials Registration NCT02592174.

This special issue of the Journal of French Language Studies participates in the ‘methodological turn’ (Byrnes, 2013) in the field of Second Language Acquisition (SLA), by presenting five original articles that focus on different methodological issues in studies on various aspects of the acquisition of French as an additional language. We highlight the contributions of the five articles and situate them within the larger discussion on research methodology. We end by arguing for the need for additional attention to methodology in SLA.

This study describes and analyzes how native and non-native speakers express modality using verbal means during oral retellings. Participants included native speakers of French and English, as well as English-speaking learners of French and French-speaking learners of English at three levels of language proficiency. All participants performed the same short film retelling, which was then transcribed and analyzed in terms of modalization. Results show that all groups use verbal modal means, although rates, meanings and types of modal forms used vary across the two languages, and especially as a function of second language proficiency.

Dans cet article, nous etudions l’influence de la langue maternelle chez des apprenants quasi-bilingues francophones de l’anglais et anglophones du francais sur l’expression en L2, a partir d’un dispositif experimental suscitant l’expression de l’aspect « en deroulement ». Nous montrons que les apprenants quasi-bilingues sont toujours influences par la structuration informationnelle de leur langue maternelle, meme a un niveau tres avance ; par ailleurs, notre etude nous permet d’analyser les conditions d’emploi de « en train de », la periphrase aspectuelle du francais exprimant le deroulement, dans le contexte fourni par notre dispositif experimental.

ObjectiveTo examine the reversibility of adipose tissue alterations in HIV-infected patients after a 6-month interruption of antiretroviral therapy (ART).MethodsForty HIV-infected patients on stable effective ART were enrolled, 33 of them completed the study. Patients underwent a physical examination, laboratory tests and needle biopsy of subcutaneous abdominal adipose tissue both at inclusion and at month 6. Changes in fat morphology, mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) content and gene expression were examined in 29, 23 and 20 patients, respectively.ResultsBody fat distribution was not clearly modified at month 6. Adipose tissue inflammation improved markedly, with fewer infiltrating macrophages and fewer tumour necrosis factor a (TNFα)- and interleukin 6 (IL6)-expressing cells. Expression of peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor γ (PPAR-γ) and of markers of mitochondrial function and biogenesis (cytochrome oxidase 2 and PPAR-γ coreceptor 1α) improved after protease inhibitor (PI) withdrawal. In patients who stopped taking stavudine or zidovudine, the number of TNFα- and IL6-expressing cells was lower at month 6 than at month 0, and so was CD68 expression, a macrophage marker. Adipocyte mitochondrial status also improved, with lower mitochondrial density and cytochrome oxidase 4 mRNA levels, and higher mtDNA content. Sterol regulatory element binding protein 1 mRNA levels increased, reflecting better adipocyte differentiation.ConclusionsA 6-month ART interruption markedly improved adipose tissue functions, although fat distribution did not visibly change. Stavudine and zidovudine were associated with marked inflammation, which improved when these drugs were withdrawn; they also had a negative effect on differentiation and mitochondrial status. PIs were also associated with altered adipocyte differentiation and mitochondrial status. These data clearly show the detrimental effect of antiretroviral drugs, in particular thymidine analogues, on adipose tissue and argue for switch strategies sparing these drugs.

Changes in glucose and fat metabolism associated with human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infection have received attention because of the development of glucose intolerance, dyslipidemia, and lipodystrophy associated with protease inhibitor (PI) therapy. The response to ingested [13C]glucose (1.4 g/kg) was determined in 9 asymptomatic male HIV patients before and after 4.8 months of PI therapy (nelfinavir, 2,250 mg/d) compared with 9 matched seronegative HIV controls. No significant difference was observed for basal plasma glucose, insulin, and C-peptide concentrations between controls and patients before PI therapy. After 4.8 months of PI therapy, basal plasma glucose concentration was slightly, but significantly, increased ([ap ] 15%) compared with controls or HIV patients prior to receiving PI therapy. Over the first hour following ingestion of the glucose load, plasma glucose and insulin concentrations were higher in HIV patients than in controls, both before ([ap ] 15% and [ap ] 29%, respectively) and after ([ap ] 32% and [ap ] 43%, respectively) PI therapy. In addition, plasma C-peptide concentration was approximately 61% higher after PI therapy. The oxidation rate of fat, endogenous, and exogenous glucose was computed from the [Vdot ] O 2 and respiratory exchange ratio corrected for protein oxidation and from 13C/12C in expired CO2. The only difference between controls and patients both before and after PI therapy was observed over the first 120 minutes following ingestion of the glucose load, when HIV patients oxidized approximately 18% more glucose and approximately 19% less fat than controls. This was not due to a larger oxidation rate of exogenous glucose, but to a larger oxidation rate of endogenous glucose ([ap ] 50%) in patients compared with controls. These data indicate that HIV infection is associated with minor changes in glucose metabolism, and that PI therapy with nelfinavir for 4.8 months only slightly further impairs glucose metabolism as assessed in response to a large oral glucose load. However, the larger stimulation of total and endogenous glucose oxidation and the larger reduction in fat oxidation, observed in the metabolic response to the glucose load in HIV patients, over time, could result in the accumulation of body fat and could contribute to lipodystrophy.

OBJECTIVE To describe HIV-1 DNA levels from baseline (W0) to week 52 (W52) among patients receiving either interleukin-2 (IL-2) + optimized background therapy (OBT) or OBT as salvage treatment. METHODS This was evaluated in a substudy of the ETOILE Agence Nationale de Recherches sur le SIDA et les hepatites virales (ANRS) 123 trial (patients with CD4 ≤ 200/mm(3), HIV RNA>4 log(10) copies/mL and a genotypic score showing two or fewer active drugs). OBT included enfuvirtide whenever possible. HIV DNA was quantified with the ANRS assay. RESULTS Blood samples were available for 21 patients in the IL-2 + OBT arm and 23 in the OBT alone arm at baseline, and for 10 and 17 patients, respectively, at W52. Median baseline CD4 count was 47 cells/mm(3) and 68 cells/mm(3), respectively; median HIV RNA was 5.1 and 4.9 log(10) copies/mL. Baseline median HIV DNA load was 3.44 log(10) copies/10(6) peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMCs) (interquartile range 3.31-4.08) and 3.51 (3.18-3.82) log(10) copies/10(6) PBMCs, respectively. At W52, it was 3.18 log(10) copies/10(6) PBMCs (2.75-3.52) and 3.48 log(10) copies/10(6) PBMCs (3.10-3.67), respectively. Cells were available at both W0 and W52 for 7 patients in the IL-2 + OBT arm and 14 in the OBT arm. Change in HIV DNA load was not associated with IL-2 use, but decreased among the seven patients receiving enfuvirtide (-0.22 log(10) copies/mL) as compared with the other 14 patients (+0.20 log(10); P=0.046). A steeper decrease in HIV DNA was observed among patients who had a larger increase in CD4 count (Pearson coefficient ρ=0.659, P=0.001). Adjusted for enfuvirtide use, there was a trend for an association between upper baseline HIV DNA level and a less frequent CD4 gain ≥ 50 cells/mm(3) at W52 (odds ratio=0.17, P=0.075). CONCLUSIONS HIV DNA levels were high in patients with advanced therapeutic failure. A larger viral reservoir may be associated with lower gains in CD4 count among patients receiving OBT. HIV DNA level could be a useful tool for the case management of patients in the late stages of disease.

Objective To assess the clinical and economic consequences of the use of protease inhibitors in the treatment of HIV infection. Design Multicentric, observational, retrospective cohort study. Setting Ten AIDS reference centres in France. Patients All patients followed in each centre from September 1995 through October 1996. Main outcome measures AIDS-defining events, death, health-care resources use, administration of antiretroviral therapy. Results Data from 7749 patients in 10 centres showed a drop in hospitalization days by 35%, new AIDS cases by 35%, and deaths by 46%. In the same period, the proportion of patients receiving antiretrovirals rose from 36 to 53% including highly active antiretroviral therapy (HAART), which rose from 0.3 to 18%. Overall cost evaluation showed a slight increase of monthly treatment cost of US$ 12 per patient. Comparison of the three centres that used HAART earliest to the three centres that used it latest showed a clear benefit to early HAART with a drop in hospitalization days by 41%, new AIDS cases by 41% and deaths by 69%. The proportion of patients with HAART rose to 27% and monthly health-care cost decreased by US$ 248852 (i.e., by US$ 101 per patient per month). Late prescribing centres experienced a less marked effect with a drop in hospitalization days by 22%, new AIDS cases by 31%, and deaths by 32.5%. Proportion of patients with HAART rose to 12% and monthly health-care costs increased by US$ 113578 (i.e., by US$ 38 per patient per month). Conclusions This study supports the extensive use of HAART in HIV-infected patients.

Few data report the prevalence in actual clinical settings of lipodystrophy (LD), and in particular of facial lipoatrophy (LA), in HIV-infected patients treated with long-term antiretroviral therapy (ART). A French, multicenter, cross-sectional, observational study was conducted in HIV-infected patients on continuous ART for more than 12 months. The main objective was to assess the prevalence of facial LA in this population. Additional objectives were to make the same assessments for nonfacial LA and lipohypertrophy. The presence of LD signs, type, and severity was assessed by clinicians and compared with patient self-evaluations through two questionnaires. A total of 2,131 assessable patients had a median age of 46 years and a median time on ART of 10 years. Physicians diagnosed facial LA in 54% of patients and these subjects had received ART for a longer duration than those without LA. Thymidine analog usage was associated with an increased likelihood of facial LA, but 28% of patients recently treatment-initiated (1-5 years) were also affected. At other sites, LA and lipohypertrophy were diagnosed in 59% and 57% of cases, respectively. The concordance between physician and patient assessments was good for facial and buttocks LA. In this study, facial LA affects more than half of the subjects and is frequent even among the most recently treated patients. The prevalence of facial LA significantly increases with the duration of ART, with male gender, hepatitis C virus (HCV) coinfection, and non-African origin being independent risk factors. Lipohypertrophy is frequent and appears early after ART initiation.

Life expectancy of HIV-infected patients has improved considerably with HAART. However long term use of HAART is linked with lipodystrophy syndrom (subcutaneous lipoatrophy and central fat accumulation) associated with dyslipemia (hypoHDL, hyperLDL and hypertriglyceridemia) and insulin resistance. It is also linked with mitochondrial toxicity clinically expressed by chronic fatigue syndrom and premature aging. The induced metabolic syndrom has cardiovascular consequences and myocardial infarction is the cause of 7% of the HIV-infected deaths in 2000. Assessment of these complications should be done at least every year. Treatment options concern antiretroviral therapy with the search for the least toxic drug (but with equal antiviral efficacy), symptomatic treatment (statin, fibrates, thiazolidinediones, metformin) and lifestyle modifications (first of all, stopping cigarette smoking!)

International audience; In isolated mitochondria the consequences of oxidative phosphorylation uncoupling are well defined, whereas in intact cells various effects have been described. Uncoupling liver cells with 2,4-dinitrophenol (DNP) in the presence of dihydroxyacetone (DHA) and ethanol results in a marked decrease in mitochondrial transmembrane electrical potential (DeltaPsi), ATP/ADP ratios and gluconeogenesis (as an ATP-utilizing process), whereas the increased oxidation rate is limited and transient. Conversely, when DHA is associated with octanoate or proline, DNP addition results in a very large and sustained increase in oxidation rate, whereas the decreases in DeltaPsi, ATP/ADP ratios and gluconeogenesis are significantly less when compared with DHA and ethanol. Hence significant energy wastage (high oxidation rate) by uncoupling is achieved only with substrates that are directly oxidized in the mitochondrial matrix. Conversely in the presence of substrates that are first oxidized in the cytosol, uncoupling results in a profound decrease in mitochondrial DeltaPsi and ATP synthesis, whereas energy wastage is very limited.

Background Total parenteral nutrition (TPN) may offer significant clinical benefit in malnourished patients with acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS). However, the immunologic effect of parenteral lipids remains unknown in these severely immunodepressed patients. Methods We undertook a prospective randomized double-blind multicenter study comparing the effects of two i.v. lipid emulsions used during TPN: long-chain triglycerides (LCT) or balanced emulsion of long-and medium-chain triglycerides (LCT/MCT). Thirty-three AIDS patients requiring TPN for wasting and reduced oral intake were allocated randomly to receive a ternary TPN mixture consisting of 1.5 g/kg/d proteins, 18 kcal/kg/d lipids, and 12 Kcal/kg/d carbohydrates for 6 days. The following tests were performed at days 0 and 7: immunoglobulins, complement fractions, lymphocyte subpopulations count, and lymphocyte proliferation with mitogens. Results Patients were all severely malnourished (weight loss: -14.0 +/- 1.3 kg). No clinical or biological differences were observed between the groups at baseline. At day 7, both groups reported a significant increase in weight. Patients in the LCT group exhibited a significant decrease in phytohemagglutinin A response (p = .04) compared with baseline. Patients in the LCT/MCT group exhibited a lower level of IgM (p = .03) and significant increase in C3 fraction (p = .03) compared with baseline. They also showed a tendency to have a higher CD4/CD8 lymphocyte ratio (p = .07), whereas other immunological parameters remained unchanged Conclusions Parenteral ternary mixture containing LCT or LCT/MCT are clinically well tolerated in AIDS patients over 6 days. With 2 g/kg/d of lipids, LCT seems to induce significant abnormalities in lymphocyte function. Such abnormalities are not observed with LCT/MCT.

Sepsis or endotoxaemia inhibits gluconeogenesis from various substrates, the main effect being related to a change in the phosphoenolpyruvate carboxykinase transcription rate. In addition, sepsis has been reported to affect the oxidative phosphorylation pathway. We have studied glycerol metabolism in hepatocytes isolated from rats fasted and injected 16 h previously with lipopolysaccharide from Escherichiacoli. Endotoxin inhibited glycerol metabolism and led to a very large accumulation of glycerol 3-phosphate; the cytosolic reducing state was increased. Furthermore glycerol kinase activity was increased by 33% (P < 0.01). The respiratory rate of intact cells was significantly decreased by sepsis, with glycerol or octanoate as exogenous substrates, whereas oxidative phosphorylation (ATP-to-O ratio or respirations in state 4, state 3 and the oligomycin-insensitive state as well as the uncoupled state) was unchanged in permeabilized hepatocytes. Hence the effect on energy metabolism seems to be present only in intact hepatocytes. An additional important feature was the observation of a significant increase in cellular volume in cells from endotoxic animals, which might account for the alterations induced by sepsis.

Bartonella species are emerging pathogens that are seldom reported as a cause of blood culture-negative endocarditis.To report the occurrence of, risk factors for, and clinical features of Bartonella endocarditis and to evaluate the diagnostic tools available for this condition.Case series and comparison with past series.Multicenter international study in Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada; Lyon, France; and Marseille, France.22 patients from France, England, Canada, and South Africa were investigated for blood culture-negative endocarditis.Titer of antibodies to Bartonella species by microimmunofluorescence assay, blood or vegetation culture, and amplification of Bartonella DNA from valvular tissue by polymerase chain reaction. Cross-adsorption was done for patients with antibodies to Chlamydia species.22 patients had definite endocarditis. Five were infected with B. quintana, 4 with B. henselae, and 13 with an undetermined Bartonella species. These cases were compared with the 11 previously reported cases. Of the patients with the newly reported cases, 19 had valvular surgery and 6 died. Nine were homeless, 11 were alcoholic, 4 owned cats, and 13 had preexisting valvular heart disease. Bartonella species caused 3% of the cases of endocarditis seen in the three study centers. The patients with these cases could have previously received a diagnosis of chlamydial endocarditis because of apparently high levels of cross-reacting antibodies to Chlamydia species.Bartonella species are an important cause of blood culture-negative endocarditis and can be identified by culture, serologic studies, or molecular biology techniques. Alcoholism and homelessness without previous valvular heart disease are risk factors for B. quintana infection but not for infection with other Bartonella species.

Background Many HIV patients receiving antiretroviral treatment develop lipodystrophy. NEW-FILL® is a polylactic acid injected to treat facial lipoatrophy. The objectives of this study were to describe (1) change in quality of life (QoL) of HIV patients treated with NEW-FILL® in the management of facial lipoatrophy; (2) efficacy of NEW-FILL® using facial photographs and (3) a patient-reported “Overall Treatment Effect” (OTE) scale; and (4) safety of NEW-FILL®. Methods Doctors from 13 treatment centres recruited 230 HIV patients to receive up to 5 sessions of NEW-FILL® injections. Patients self-reported QoL with the ABCD questionnaire before the first set of injections, at 2 months and at 12 to 18 months after the last session of injections. Efficacy was evaluated at each interval through photographs and OTE scale. Safety was evaluated via Case Report Form (CRF) data. Results 64.4% of patients reported QoL improvements of >10% at 2 months, and 58.8% at 12–18 months. Lipoatrophy grades improved at each visit (“no lipoatrophy” or “limited lipoatrophy”: 20.3% at inclusion, 77.4% at 2 months, 58.4% at 12–18 months). Average OTE scores of 5.3 and 5.0 at 2 and 12–18 months indicated “moderate improvement”. Minimum Important Difference (MID) in QoL score was 7.1 points at 2 months; 7.4 points at 12–18 months. For 911 injection sessions performed, 3.4% resulted in “immediate” adverse events, 7% in “non-immediate” events, and 1.7% in “other” events. Conclusions Improvements to quality of life and diminished lipoatrophy visibility were observed in the months immediately following NEW-FILL® treatment and were maintained 12–18 months post-treatment. Most adverse events were mild and transient. ABCD MID thresholds provide clinicians with means to assess the impact of lipoatrophy therapies on QoL.

Background Facial lipoatrophy is a frequently reported condition associated with use of antiretroviral (ARV) drugs. Poly-L-lactic acid (PLLA) acid has been used to correct facial lipoatrophy in people with HIV since 2004 both in Europe and the United States. The objective of this study was to establish, in real life conditions and in a large sample, the safety of PLLA (New Fill®, Valeant US, Sinclair Pharma Paris, France) to correct facial lipoatrophy among HIV-positive patients. Methods A longitudinal study was conducted between 2005 and 2008 in France. Data from 4,112 treatment courses (n = 4,112 patients) and 15,665 injections sessions (1 to 5 injection sessions per treatment course) were gathered by 200 physicians trained in the use of PLLA. Results The average age of patients (88.3% males) treated for lipoatrophy was 47.1 ± 8.1 years (Mean ± SD); 91.2% of patients had been receiving ARV treatment for 10.9 (±4.2) years; CD4 T-cell count was 535 ± 266 cells/mm3. The duration of facial lipoatrophy was 5 ± 2.8 years and the severity was such that 47.3% of patients required five injection sessions of PLLA and 81.9% of the sessions required two vials of the preparation. The final visit, scheduled two months after the last injection session, was attended by 66.0% of patients (n = 2,713). 48 treatment courses (2.8%) were discontinued due to adverse events (AEs). The overall incidence of AEs per course was 18.8%. Immediate AEs, bleeding (3.4%), bruising (2.3%), pain (2.0%), redness at injection site (1.6%), and swelling of the face (0.7%), occurred in 15.4% of courses and 7.0% of sessions (usually during the first session). Non-immediate AEs, mainly nodules (5.7%), inflammation (0.7%), granuloma (0.3%), discolouration (0.2%), and skin hypertrophy (0.1%), occurred in 6.7% of courses. Non-immediate AEs occurred within a time ranging from 21 days (inflammation) to 101 days (granuloma) and all but three of the 13 cases of granuloma resolved. Product efficacy was rated satisfactory by 95% of the patients and physicians. Conclusions This study demonstrated, in real-life conditions and on a large sample, that PLLA injections were feasible, efficient, and safe when performed by trained physicians. Il présente les recherches actuelles de jeunes chercheurs du monde entier et reflète la diversité des objets, des méthodes et des perspectives dans l'étude des langues et du langage. Les contributions ont été régroupées en 5 axes thématiques : Description linguistique, Psycholinguistique et développement langagier, Sociolinguistique et plurilinguisme, Didactique des langues et Outils informatiques pour la linguistique et la didactique des langues. Au delà de ce choix éditorial, c'est la pluridisciplinarité qui est mise à l'honneur dans ce recueil, destiné aux étudiants, aux enseignants-chercheurs et à tout lecteur curieux d'élargir ses connaissances à travers ce panorama riche et varié.

This study focuses on reading comprehension in French L2 learners of English. We begin by providing an overview of different factors that affect reading comprehension. Our goal was to understand how L2 learners approach a text in English. We used questionnaires and the Think Aloud method to gather information. Our results reveal that students use both cognitive and metacognitive strategies and rely heavily on vocabulary and word recognition as well as background knowledge. This supports using an integrative approach in the classroom in order to promote better reading comprehension.; Cette étude porte sur la compréhension écrite chez les apprenants français L2 de l'anglais. Nous commençons par donner un aperçu des différents facteurs qui influencent celle-ci. Notre objectif était de comprendre comment les apprenants L2 abordent un texte. Nous avons utilisé des questionnaires et la méthode Think Aloud pour recueillir des informations. Nos résultats révèlent que les élèves utilisent à la fois des stratégies cognitives et métacognitives et qu'ils s'appuient essentiellement sur le vocabulaire, la reconnaissance des mots et leurs connaissances préalables. Ceci soutient l'utilisation d'une approche intégrative en classe afin de renforcer la compréhension écrite.

Les recherches sur l’acquisition de la morphologie en L2 se sont surtout intéressées au développement de la morphologie flexionnelle, envisagé par Dulay & Burt (1974) ou Bartning & Schlyter (2004) comme une échelle d’acquisition de morphèmes ou formes de mots et expliqués tantôt par le programme interne de la faculté innée de langage propre à chaque apprenant (Dulay & Burt, 1974), tantôt par les propriétés de la langue pratiquée dans l’environnement de celui-ci (Goldschneider & DeKeyser, 2001). Dans la continuité de ces travaux, les études de l’accord en nombre des verbes irréguliers ou celles du choix de l’article, masculin ou féminin, des noms inanimés, rendent compte des multiples facteurs linguistiques et extra-linguistiques impliqués dans le développement morphologique et contribuent à notre compréhension de la variabilité des parcours acquisitionnels. Depuis une vingtaine d’années, une partie des recherches sur l’acquisition de la morphologie en L2 vise à comprendre l’organisation des réseaux de formes de mots et morphèmes dans le lexique mental et contribuent ainsi à comprendre comment se construit le lexique des locuteurs plurilingues selon les situations. Les résultats de ces recherches fournissent ainsi un éclairage précieux pour enseigner la morphologie d’une langue.
