While the burgeoning research on corporate social responsibility (CSR) indicates the importance of tracking the interest of external stakeholders to obtain societal goals, insight into what types of CSR activities contribute to social outcomes remain scarce. As such, the purpose of this study was to identify the relevant dimensions of CSR that can enhance the social outcomes of one specific group of external stakeholders (i.e., sport fans). Data were collected from US sports fans (n = 312) over the course of two weeks. The present research indicates that fans gain more excitement and happiness as well as increased their social cohesion if sport organization CSR initiatives are concentrating on sport governance, environmental management and sustainability, and philanthropy issues. Assessing the impact of CSR from micro-level approach would be one way to strengthen the relationship between existing fans and sport organizations to make positive social impact. Abstract

This article sets out to clarify the wide range of relationships between religions and humanitarian traditions as ideological movements, taking Islam as a case study. It postulates that the concept of the 'sacred,' which is culturally restricted, is a special case of boundary maintenance or 'purism.' Metaphorically, 'puripetal force' is defined as a tendency common to all ideological systems, a resistance to social entropy or anomie. The importance of purity in Islamic doctrine is well attested, but within that wider sphere we may identify the specially puritan version of Islam known as Wahhabi-Salafism. As for humanitarianism and philanthropy, these occupy in the West a 'space' protected by special laws and conceived of as untainted by either politics or economics. Within the wider sphere of humanitarianism we may locate a more concentrated form in Dunantism, which has underpinned the world view and habitus of the International Committee of the Red Cross. This article outlines how the policies and programs of various Islamic charity and welfare organizations--originating in Britain, Indonesia, and Saudi-Arabia--interact differentially with on the one hand Islamic doctrines and on the other hand humanitarian traditions. Finally, it is suggested that this explanatory model could equally be applied to Christian and other religious traditions, with the concluding thought that the common ground between the institutions of international humanitarianism and religion is currently expanding. In this essay, we first explore the organized philanthropic activity of entrepreneurial families--that is, the set of private initiatives aimed for the public good that are channeled by them through ad hoc independently governed organizations such as foundations. Entrepreneurial families have become major actors in the twenty-first-century global economy, giving rise to increased scholarly interest in the performance, organization, specificities, and overall impact of family firms. The departing idea of this essay is that family foundations, too, have become important economic actors that ought to be included in the business history agenda. The proliferation of family foundations over the past three decades evokes the rise of scientific philanthropy during the first globalization wave. We propose a preliminary framework and methodology to approach the functionalities of corporate foundations for family firms and the perceived benefits of family foundations for entrepreneurial families, based on Spain as a case study but suitable for international comparisons.
