Lithium-rich layered oxides (LRLOs) are opening unexplored frontiers for high-capacity/high-voltage positive electrodes in Li-ion batteries (LIBs) to meet the challenges of green and safe transportation as well as cheap and sustainable stationary energy storage from renewable sources. LRLOs exploit the extra lithiation provided by the Li1.2TM0.8O2 stoichiometries (TM = a blend of transition metals with a moderate cobalt content) achievable by a layered structure to disclose specific capacities beyond 200-250 mA h g(-1) and working potentials in the 3.4-3.8 V range versus Li. Here, we demonstrate an innovative paradigm to extend the LRLO concept. We have balanced the substitution of cobalt in the transition-metal layer of the lattice with aluminum and lithium, pushing the composition of LRLO to unexplored stoichiometries, that is, Li-1.2(+x)(Mn,Ni,Co,AI)(0.8-x)O2-delta. The fine tuning of the composition of the metal blend results in an optimized layered material, that is, Li1.28Mn0.54Ni0.13Co0.02Al0.03O2-delta, with outstanding electrochemical performance in full LIBs, improved environmental benignity, and reduced manufacturing costs compared to the state-of-the-art.

In the past few years, the chirality and magnetism of molecules have received notable interest for the development of novel molecular devices. Chiral helicenes combine both these properties, and thus their nanostructuration is the first step toward developing new multifunctional devices. Here, we present a novel strategy to deposit a sub‐monolayer of enantiopure thia[4]helicene radical cations on a pre‐functionalized Au(111) substrate. This approach results in both the paramagnetic character and the chemical structure of these molecules being maintained at the nanoscale, as demonstrated by in‐house characterizations. Furthermore, synchrotron‐based X‐ray natural circular dichroism confirmed that the handedness of the thia[4]helicene is preserved on the surface., A strategy based on noncovalent interactions has been developed to deposit a sub‐monolayer of enantiopure thia[4]helicene radical cations on a pre‐functionalized Au(111) substrate. This approach results in both the paramagnetic character and the chirality of the molecules being retained at the nanoscale.

Recently, several researchers have claimed the existence of superior catalytic activity associated with topological materials belonging to the class of Dirac/Weyl semimetals, owing to the high electron conductivity and charge carrier mobility in these topological materials. By means of X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, electrocatalytic tests, and density functional theory, we have investigated the chemical reactivity (chemisorption of ambient gases), ambient stability, and catalytic properties of PdSn4, a topological semimetal showing Dirac node arcs. We find a Tafel slope of 83 mV in the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) dec-1with an overpotential of 50 mV, with performances resembling those of pure Pd, regardless of its limited amount in the alloy, with a subsequent reduction in the cost of raw materials by ∼80%. Remarkably, the PdSn4-based electrode shows superior robustness to CO compared to pure Pd and Pt and high stability in water media, although the PdSn4surface is prone to oxidation with the formation of a sub-nanometric SnO2skin. Moreover, we also assessed the significance of the role of topological electronic states in the observed catalytic properties. Actually, the peculiar atomic structure of oxidized PdSn4enables the migration of hydrogen atoms through the Sn-O layer with a barrier comparable with the energy cost of the Heyrovsky step of HER over Pt(111) in acidic media (0.1 eV). On the other hand, the topological properties play a minor role, if existing, contrarily to the recent reports overestimating their contribution in catalytic properties. © 2021 The Authors. Interfaces between water and materials are ubiquitous and are crucial in materials sciences and in biology, where investigating the interaction of water with the surface under ambient conditions is key to shedding light on the main processes occurring at the interface. Magnesium oxide is a popular model system to study the metal oxide-water interface, where, for sufficient water loadings, theoretical models have suggested that reconstructed surfaces involving hydrated Mg

Ti silicates, and in particular, titanium silicalite-1 (TS-1), are nowadays important catalysts for several partial oxidation reactions in the presence of aqueous H2 O2 as an oxidant. Despite the numerous studies dealing with this material, some fundamental aspects are still unclear. In particular, the structure and the catalytic role of defective Ti sites, other than perfect tetrahedral sites recognized as the main active species, has not been quantitatively discussed in the literature. We assess the structural features of defective Ti sites on the basis of outcomes of electronic spectroscopies, as interpreted through quantum mechanical simulation. Strong evidence is disclosed to support the fact that the most common defective Ti sites, often reported in the TS-1 literature, are monomeric Ti centers that are embedded in the zeolite framework, and which have a distorted octahedral local symmetry.

Magnetism in monolayer (ML) VSe2 has attracted broad interest in spintronics, while existing reports have not reached consensus. Using element-specific X-ray magnetic circular dichroism, a magnetic transition in ML VSe2 has been demonstrated at the contamination-free interface between Co and VSe2. Through interfacial hybridization with a Co atomic overlayer, a magnetic moment of about 0.4 NB per V atom in ML VSe2 is revealed, approaching values predicted by previous theoretical calculations. Promotion of the ferromagnetism in ML VSe2 is accompanied by its antiferromagnetic coupling to Co and a reduction in the spin moment of Co. In comparison to the absence of this interface-induced ferromagnetism at the Fe/ML MoSe2 interface, these findings at the Co/ML VSe2 interface provide clear proof that the ML VSe2, initially with magnetic disorder, is on the verge of magnetic transition.

Controlling magnetism by using electric fields is a goal of research towards novel spintronic devices and future nanoelectronics. For this reason, multiferroic heterostructures attract much interest. Here we provide experimental evidence, and supporting density functional theory analysis, of a transition in $\mathrm{L}{\mathrm{a}}_{0.65}\mathrm{S}{\mathrm{r}}_{0.35}\mathrm{Mn}{\mathrm{O}}_{3}$ thin film to a stable ferromagnetic phase, that is induced by the structural and strain properties of the ferroelectric $\mathrm{BaTi}{\mathrm{O}}_{3}$ (BTO) substrate, which can be modified by applying external electric fields. X-ray magnetic circular dichroism measurements on Mn $L$ edges with a synchrotron radiation show, in fact, two magnetic transitions as a function of temperature that correspond to structural changes of the BTO substrate. We also show that ferromagnetism, absent in the pristine condition at room temperature, can be established by electrically switching the BTO ferroelectric domains in the out-of-plane direction. The present results confirm that electrically induced strain can be exploited to control magnetism in multiferroic oxide heterostructures.

In situ temperature-programmed (TP) analyses in a multi-analytical approach including X-ray diffractometry (XRD), temperature-programmed reduction (TPR), thermogravimetry (TGA), near-edge X-ray absorption fine structure spectroscopy (NEXAFS) are used to study the relationship between redox properties and structural changes in Pr0.5Ba0.5MnO3-delta (m-PBM), PrBaMn2O5+delta (r-PBM), and PrBaMn2O5+delta (o-PBM) when exposed to reduction/oxidation cycles. TP-XRD analysis shows that under reducing conditions, between 300 and 850 degrees C, the biphase perovskite m-PBM turns into the monolayered perovskite r-PBM. Stabilization of the latter phase at room temperature requires early oxidation in air at a high temperature (850 degrees C) to avoid segregation, resulting in the formation of the oxidized layered phase (o-PBM). The o-PBM layered perovskite is characterized by the H-2-TPR profile, showing two reduction peaks at temperatures below 500 degrees C. TP-NEXAFS characterization reveals the copresence of Mn(IV) (60%), Mn(III) (30%), and Mn(II) (10%) and helps to interpret the reduction profile: Mn(IV) converts to Mn(III) at similar to 300 degrees C (I pk), Mn(III) to Mn(II) at similar to 450 degrees C (II pk). The TGA characterization confirms the reversibility of the o-PBM r-PBM process at 800 degrees C; in addition, it shows that the r-PBM can be oxidized almost completely (similar to 99%) also by CO2 without accumulation of carbonates. This study sheds light on the peculiar redox behavior of PBM-based materials and paves the way for their application as oxygen carriers and catalytic promoters in different CO2 enhancement technologies. Here, we discuss the results obtained to develop versatile and redox-resistant electrodes for solid oxide electrochemical cell/solid oxide fuel cell applications.

Magnesium oxide is a popular model system to study the metal oxide-water interface, where, for sufficient water loadings, theoretical models have suggested that reconstructed surfaces involving hydrated Mg2+ metal ions may be energetically favored. In this work, by combining experimental and theoretical surface-selective ambient pressure X-ray absorption spectroscopy with multivariate curve resolution and molecular dynamics, we evidence in real time the occurrence of Mg2+ solvation at the interphase between MgO and solvating media such as water and methanol (MeOH). Further, we show that the Mg2+ surface ions undergo a reversible solvation process, we prove the dissolution/redeposition of the Mg2+ ions belonging to the MgO surface, and we demonstrate the formation of octahedral [Mg(H2O)6]2+ and [Mg(MeOH)6]2+ intermediate solvated species. The unique surface, electronic, and structural sensitivity of the developed technique may be beneficial to access often elusive properties of low-Z metal ion intermediates involved in interfacial processes of chemical and biological interest.

By means of surface-science experiments, electrochemical tests and density functional theory, we unveil the mechanisms ruling the catalytic activity of PtSn4. Specifically, through an investigation of the surface chemical reactivity toward CO, H2O, and O2 molecules at room temperature and, moreover, of surface stability in air, we show that the catalytic activity of PtSn4 is determined by the atomic tin layer constituting its surface termination. The PtSn4 surface is not affected by CO poisoning, although it evolves into a tin-oxide skin in the ambient atmosphere. We demonstrate that the hydrogen evolution reaction on PtSn4 can be modelled by the combination of two steps, i.e. Volmer and Tafel reactions. Surprisingly, surface oxidation induces a reduction of the energy barrier for the Tafel reaction, so that oxidized PtSn4 behaves similarly to Pt(111), in spite of the reduced amount of Pt in the alloy and without available over-surface Pt sites. Correspondingly, we observe in electrochemical experiments a Tafel slope of 86 mV dec−1 and an onset potential similar to that of pure Pt. However, PtSn4 contains only 29% wt of Pt, with a reduction of the economic cost by 70%. Our results indicate PtSn4 as a promising novel material for electrocatalytic reactions, whose performance could be further tuned by surface treatments.

Ultrathin CoO films can be grown onto Fe(001) by exploiting Co buffer layers with nanometer thickness, with the result of avoiding the formation of Fe oxides at the interface. Such a system is characterized by a magnetic anisotropy that influences the magnetization reversal behavior, making the Fe easy magnetization axes inequivalent. Here, we exploit Magnetic Second Harmonic Generation to show that such an anisotropy is related to the buried interface and that it is not related to the magnetic properties of the antiferromagnetic CoO layer. In fact, CoO is magnetically ordered already at room temperature, even for low thicknesses and independently on the presence of Fe oxides. The magnetic domains configuration of CoO mimics those of both Fe and Co in all cases, as testified by magnetic PhotoElectron Emission Microscopy measurements.

Composite multiferroics containing ferroelectric and ferromagnetic components often have much larger magnetoelectric coupling compared to their single-phase counterparts. Doped or alloyed HfO

In this work, we investigate the effects of the ${\mathrm{V}}_{2}{\mathrm{O}}_{3}$ structural phase transition on the magnetic properties of an amorphous magnetic thin film of CoFeB in contact with it. ${\mathrm{V}}_{2}{\mathrm{O}}_{3}$ thin films are deposited epitaxially on sapphire substrates, reaching bulklike properties after few nm of growth. By means of temperature dependent Kerr effect characterizations, we prove that crossing the ${\mathrm{V}}_{2}{\mathrm{O}}_{3}$ structural phase transition induces reproducible and reversible changes to CoFeB magnetic properties, especially to its coercive field. By decreasing the oxide layer thickness, its effects on the magnetic layer decreases, while reducing the magnetic layer thickness maximizes it, with a maximum of 330% coercive field variation found between the two ${\mathrm{V}}_{2}{\mathrm{O}}_{3}$ structural phases. By simply tuning the temperature, this systematic study shows that the engineering of ${\mathrm{V}}_{2}{\mathrm{O}}_{3}$ structural transition induces large interfacial strain and thus strong magnetic property variations to an amorphous thin film, opening wide possibilities in implementing strain-driven control of the magnetic behavior without strict requirements on epitaxial coherence at the interface.

$V_2O_3$ has long been studied as a prototypical strongly correlated material. The difficulty in obtaining clean, well ordered surfaces, however, hindered the use of surface sensitive techniques to study its electronic structure. Here we show by mean of X-ray diffraction and electrical transport that thin films prepared by pulsed laser deposition can reproduce the functionality of bulk $V_2O_3$. The same films, when transferred in-situ, show an excellent surface quality as indicated by scanning tunnelling microscopy and low energy electron diffraction, representing a viable approach to study the metal-insulator transition (MIT) in $V_2O_3$ by means of angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy. Combined, these two aspects pave the way for the use of $V_2O_3$ thin films in device-oriented heterostructures.

High entropy oxides (HEOs) are an emerging class of materials constituted by multicomponent systems that are receiving special interest as candidates for obtaining novel and desirable properties. In this study we present a detailed investigation of the relevant intermediates arising at the surface of the prototypical HEO Mg0.2Co0.2Ni0.2Cu0.2Zn0.2O during low-temperature CO oxidation. By combining Cu L2,3-edge operando soft X-ray absorption spectroscopy (soft-XAS) with density functional theory simulations and in situ FT-IR spectroscopy, we propose that upon HEO exposure to CO at 235 °C reduced Cu(I) sites arise mostly coordinated to activated CO molecules and partly to bidentate carbonate species. When the HEO surface is then exposed to a stoichiometric mixture of CO + 1/2O2 at 250 °C, CO2 is produced while bidentate carbonate moieties remain interacting with the Cu(I) sites. We structurally characterize the carbonate and CO preferential adsorption geometries on the Cu(I) surface metal centers, and find that CO adopts a bent conformation that may energetically favor its subsequent oxidation. The unique surface, structural and electronic sensitivity of soft-XAS coupled with the developed data analysis work-flow and supported by FT-IR spectroscopy may be beneficial to characterize often elusive surface properties of systems of catalytic interest.

The femtosecond evolution of the electronic temperature of laser-excited gold nanoparticles is measured, by means of ultrafast time-resolved photoemission spectroscopy induced by extreme-ultraviolet radiation pulses. The temperature of the electron gas is deduced by recording and fitting high-resolution photo emission spectra around the Fermi edge of gold nanoparticles providing a direct, unambiguous picture of the ultrafast electron-gas dynamics. These results will be instrumental to the refinement of existing models of femtosecond processes in laterally-confined and bulk condensed-matter systems, and for understanding more deeply the role of hot electrons in technological applications.

A ferromagnetic (FM) thin film deposited on a substrate of $\mathrm{Pb}({\mathrm{Mg}}_{1/3}{\mathrm{Nb}}_{2/3}){\mathrm{O}}_{3}\text{\ensuremath{-}}{\mathrm{PbTiO}}_{3}$ (PMN-PT) is an appealing heterostructure for the electrical control of magnetism, which would enable nonvolatile memories with ultralow-power consumption. Reversible and electrically controlled morphological changes at the surface of PMN-PT suggest that the magnetoelectric effects are more complex than the commonly used ``strain-mediated'' description. Here we show that changes in substrate morphology intervene in magnetoelectric coupling as a key parameter interplaying with strain. Magnetic-sensitive microscopy techniques are used to study magnetoelectric coupling in Fe/PMN-PT at different length scales, and compare different substrate cuts. The observed rotation of the magnetic anisotropy is connected to the changes in morphology, and mapped in the crack pattern at the mesoscopic scale. Ferroelectric polarization switching induces a magnetic field-free rotation of the magnetic domains at micrometer scale, with a wide distribution of rotation angles. Our results show that the relationship between the rotation of the magnetic easy axis and the rotation of the in-plane component of the electric polarization is not straightforward, as well as the relationship between ferroelectric domains and crack pattern. The understanding and control of this phenomenon is crucial to develop functional devices based on FM/PMN-PT heterostructures.

The study of ionic materials on nanometer scale is of great relevance for efficient miniaturized devices for energy applications. Two-dimensional (2D) alloys represent a versatile platform that extends the properties of atomically thin transition-metal dichalcogenides. Here, using molecular beam epitaxy, we investigate the growth of 2D vanadium-molybdenum diselenide alloys, VxMo1-xSe2, on highly oriented pyrolytic graphite and unveil their structural, chemical, and electronic integrities via measurements by scanning tunneling microscopy/spectroscopy, synchrotron X-ray photoemission, and X-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS). Essentially, we found a critical value of x = similar to 0.44, below which phase separation occurs and above which a homogeneous metallic phase is favored. Another observation is an effective increase in the density of mirror twin boundaries of constituting MoSe2 in the low V concentration regime (x

THORONDOR is a data treatment software with a graphical user interface (GUI) accessible via the browser-based Jupyter notebook framework. It aims to provide an interactive and user-friendly tool for the analysis of NEXAFS spectra collected during in situ experiments. The program allows on-the-fly representation and quick correction of large datasets from single or multiple experiments. In particular, it provides the possibility to align in energy several spectral profiles on the basis of user-defined references. Various techniques to calculate background subtraction and signal normalization have been made available. In this context, an innovation of this GUI involves the usage of a slider-based approach that provides the ability to instantly manipulate and visualize processed data for the user. Finally, the program is characterized by an advanced fitting toolbox based on the lmfit package. It offers a large selection of fitting routines as well as different peak distributions and empirical ionization potential step edges, which can be used for the fit of the NEXAFS rising-edge peaks. Statistical parameters describing the goodness of a fit such as χ2 or the R-factor together with the parameter uncertainty distributions and the related correlations can be extracted for each chosen model.

Exploiting first-principles simulations and x-ray absorption near edge spectroscopy (XANES) in high magnetic fields, we investigated the magnetic properties of thin films of zirconia doped with Fe impurities. In our ${\mathrm{Zr}}_{1\ensuremath{-}x}{\mathrm{Fe}}_{x}{\mathrm{O}}_{2\ensuremath{-}y}$ samples, grown by atomic layer deposition (ALD), the Fe dopants are uniformly distributed, ranging from diluted ($x\ensuremath{\simeq}2\text{--}3%$) up to high ($x\ensuremath{\simeq}25%$) atomic concentration. By x-ray magnetic circular dichroism (XMCD), we carefully analyzed, for samples having different Fe concentration, the magnetic moments as a function of temperature, in the range from 5 K up to 150 K, studying the best dopant concentration range maximizing the magnetic signal. Surprisingly, the iron magnetic moment measured for diluted concentrations degrades as the concentration of magnetic dopant increases. On the basis of ab initio simulations, we propose that the microscopic mechanisms responsible for the peculiar magnetic properties of this compound can be explained by oxygen-mediated superexchange mechanism between the Fe dopants producing, at high dopant concentration, an antiferromagnetic coupling between two Fe atoms. We identify and discuss the role of O vacancies to control such microscopic mechanisms.

The mechanisms of CO oxidation on the Mg0.2Co0.2Ni0.2Cu0.2Zn0.2O high-entropy oxide were studied by means of operando soft X-ray absorption spectroscopy. We found that Cu is the active metal and that Cu(II) can be rapidly reduced to Cu(I) by CO when the temperature is higher than 130 °C. Co and Ni do not have any role in this respect. The Cu(II) oxidation state can be easily but slowly recovered by treatment of the sample with O2 at ca. 250 °C. However, it should be noted that CuO is readily and irreversibly reduced to Cu(I) when it is treated with CO at T > 100 °C. Thus, the main conclusion of this work is that the high configurational entropy of Mg0.2Co0.2Ni0.2Cu0.2Zn0.2O stabilizes the rock-salt structure and permits the oxidation/reduction of Cu to be reversible, thus permitting the catalytic cycle to take place.

Carbon (C) surface segregation from bulk stabilizes the Fe(0 18 1) vicinal surface by forming a c(3$$\sqrt{2}$$ 2 × $$\sqrt{2}$$ 2 reconstruction with C zig-zag chains oriented at 45° with respect to the iron surface steps. The iron surface electronic states as measured by high resolution ARPES at normal emission with polarized synchrotron radiation split in two peaks that follow distinct energy dispersion curves. One peak follows the dispersion of the carbon superstructure and is photoexcited only when the polarization vector is parallel to the steps, the second peak disperses similarly to the pristine Fe(0 0 1) surface. Such surface electronic structure is robust as it persists even after coating with an Ag overlayer. The robustness of this surface electronic structure and its similarity with that of the clean Fe(0 0 1) surface make this system of interest for magnetic and spintronic properties such as magneto tunnel junctions based on Fe/MgO interface.

We report the study of anatase TiO2(001)-oriented thin films grown by pulsed laser deposition on LaAlO3(001). A combination of in situ and ex situ methods has been used to address both the origin of the Ti(3+)-localized states and their relationship with the structural and electronic properties on the surface and the subsurface. Localized in-gap states are analyzed using resonant X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and are related to the Ti(3+) electronic configuration, homogeneously distributed over the entire film thickness. We find that an increase in the oxygen pressure corresponds to an increase in Ti(3+) only in a well-defined range of deposition pressure; outside this range, Ti(3+) and the strength of the in-gap states are reduced.

Ambient-pressure operando soft X-ray absorption spectroscopy (soft-XAS) was applied to study the reactivity of hydroxylated SnO2 nanoparticles toward reducing gases. H2 was first used as a test case, showing that the gas phase and surface states can be simultaneously probed: Soft-XAS at the O K-edge gains sensitivity toward the gas phase, while at the Sn M4,5-edges, tin surface states are explicitly probed. Results obtained by flowing hydrocarbons (CH4 and CH3CHCH2) unequivocally show that these gases react with surface hydroxyl groups to produce water without producing carbon oxides and release electrons that localize on Sn to eventually form SnO. The partially reduced SnO2 – x layer at the surface of SnO2 is readily reoxidized to SnO2 by treating the sample with O2 at mild temperatures (>200 °C), revealing the nature of “electron sponge” of tin oxide. The experiments, combined with DFT calculations, allowed devising of a mechanism for dissociative hydrocarbon adsorption on SnO2, involving direct reduction of Sn sites at the surface via cleavage of C–H bonds and the formation of methoxy- and/or methyl-tin species at the surface.

The electronic properties of hole- and electron-doped manganites were probed by a combination of x-ray absorption and photoemission spectroscopies. Hole-doped La0.7Ba0.3MnO3 and electron-doped La0.7Ce0.3MnO3 thin films were epitaxially grown on SrTiO3 substrates by means of pulsed laser deposition. Ex-situ x-ray diffraction demonstrated the substrate/film epitaxy relation and in-situ low energy electron diffraction provided evidence of high structural order of film surfaces. By combining synchrotron x-ray absorption and x-ray photoemission spectroscopy, evidence of Mn ions into a 2+ state as a result of the Ce 4 + substitution in the electron-doped manganites was provided. Angular resolved photo-emission spectroscopy (ARPES) results showed a predominance of z2-orbitals at the surface of both hole- and, unexpectedly, electron-doped manganites thus questioning the validity of the commonly accepted scenario describing the electron filling in manganites’ 3d orbitals in oxide manganites. The precise determination of the electronic and orbital properties of the terminating layers of oxide manganites paves the way for engineering multi-layered heterostructures thus leading to novel opportunities in the field of quantum electronics.

Tin diselenide (SnSe2) is a van der Waals semiconductor, which spontaneously forms a subnanometric SnO2 skin once exposed to air. Here, by means of surface-science spectroscopies and density functional theory, we have investigated the charge redistribution at the SnO2-SnSe2 heterojunction in both oxidative and humid environments. Explicitly, we find that the work function of the pristine SnSe2 surface increases by 0.23 and 0.40 eV upon exposure to O2 and air, respectively, with a charge transfer reaching 0.56 e-/SnO2 between the underlying SnSe2 and the SnO2 skin. Remarkably, both pristine SnSe2 and defective SnSe2 display chemical inertness toward water, in contrast to other metal chalcogenides. Conversely, the SnO2-SnSe2 interface formed upon surface oxidation is highly reactive toward water, with subsequent implications for SnSe2-based devices working in ambient humidity, including chemical sensors.
