The FDA has allowed several food container manufacturers to use recycled polyethylene theeaphthalate (PET) for their products. The FDA approved manufacturers who used depolymerization and multilayer preform technology for making products that would eventually come in direct contact with food items. PET is made by degrading the plastic polymers and repolymerizing them to remove volatile materials. However, manufacturers have found greater demand for PET-derived packaging outside the US.
