Purpose: Whiplash associated disorders remain a major health problem in terms of impact on health care and on societal costs. Aetiology remains controversial including the old supposition that the cervical muscles do not play a significant role. This study examined the muscle activity from relevant muscles during rear-end impacts in an effort to gauge their influence on the aetiology of whiplash associated disorders. Methods: Volunteers were subjected to a sub-injury level of rear impact. Surface electromyography (EMG) was used to record cervical muscle activity before, during and after impact. Muscle response time and EMG signal amplitude were analysed. Head, pelvis, and T1 acceleration data were recorded. Results: The activities of the cervical muscles were found to be significant. The sternocleidomastoideus, trapezius and erector spinae were activated on average 59 ms, 73 ms and 84 ms after the impact stimulus, respectively, prior to peak head acceleration (113 ms). Conclusion: The cervical muscles reacted prior to peak head acceleration, thus in time to influence whiplash biomechanics and possibly injury mechanisms. It is recommended therefore, that muscular influences be incorporated into the development of the new rear-impact crash test dummy in order to make the dummy as biofidelic as possible. Creep behavior in interlaminar shear of a non-oxide ceramic composite with a multilayered matrix was investigated at 1200∘C in laboratory air and in steam environment. The composite was produced via chemical vapor infiltration (CVI). The composite had an oxidation inhibited matrix, which consisted of alternating layers of silicon carbide and boron carbide and was reinforced with laminated Hi-NicalonTM fibers woven in a five-harness-satin weave. Fiber preforms had pyrolytic carbon fiber coating with boron carbon overlay applied. The interlaminar shear properties were measured. The creep behavior was examined for interlaminar shear stresses in the 16–22 MPa range. Primary and secondary creep regimes were observed in all tests conducted in air and in steam. In air and in steam, creep run-out defined as 100 h at creep stress was achieved at 16 MPa. Similar creep strains were accumulated in air and in steam. Furthermore, creep strain rates and creep lifetimes were only moderately affected by the presence of steam. The retained properties of all specimens that achieved run-out were characterized. Composite microstructure, as well as damage and failure mechanisms were investigated. The tested specimens were also examined using electron probe microanalysis (EPMA) with wavelength dispersive spectroscopy (WDS). Analysis of the fracture surfaces revealed significant surface oxidation, but only trace amounts of boron and carbon. Cross sectional analysis showed increasing boron concentration in the specimen interior.

Carbonaceous and carbon-coated electrodes are ubiquitous in electrochemical energy storage and conversion technologies due to their electrochemical stability, lightweight nature, and relatively low cost. However, traditional reliance on conductive additives and binders leads to impermanent electrical pathways. Here, a general approach is presented to fabricate robust electrodes with a progressive failure mechanism by introducing carbide-based interconnects grown via carbothermal conversion of (5 wt%) titanium hydride nanoparticles. This method concurrently enhances both electrical and mechanical properties within the electrode architecture. The resulting chemical bonding between active materials establishes a novel mechanism to maintain stable electrical pathways during cycling. Employed as Li-ion battery anodes, these electrodes exhibit improved cyclability, achieving 80% capacity retention after 800 fast-charge cycles at moderate loading (1 mAh cm - 2 ). High loading cells with areal capacity of 3 mAh cm -2 show significantly improved cycle life over the same number of cycles. This performance improvement is attributed to the absence of significant impedance growth and a thinner solid electrolyte interphase (SEI) layer formed at high current densities (4C) as demonstrated by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and transmission electron microscopy studies. Cathodic electrochemical intercalation/exfoliation of transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDs) with bulky tetraalkylammonium-based cations is gaining popularity as it avoids the semiconducting (2H) to metallic (1T) phase transformation in TMDs like molybdenum disulfide (MoS 2 ) and, generally, produces sheets with a larger aspect ratio - important for achieving conformal sheet-to-sheet contact in optoelectronic devices. Large single crystals are typically used as the precursor, but these are expensive, often inaccessible, and result in limited quantities of material. In this paper, a 3D-printable electrochemical cell capable of intercalating gram-scale quantities of commercially available TMD powders is presented. By incorporating a reference electrode in the cell and physically restraining the powder with a spring-loaded mechanism, the system can probe the intercalation electrochemistry, for example, determining the onset of intercalation to be near -2.5 V versus the ferrocene redox couple. While the extent of intercalation depends on precursor quantity and reaction time, a high yield of exfoliated product can be obtained exhibiting average aspect ratios as high as 49 ± 44 similar to values obtained by crystal intercalation. The intercalation and exfoliation of a wide variety of pelletized commercial powders including molybdenum diselenide (MoSe 2 ), tungsten diselenide (WSe 2 ), tungsten disulfide (WS 2 ), and graphitic carbon nitride (gCN) are also demonstrated., (© 2024 National Research Council Canada and The Author(s). Graphene oxide (GO)-based membranes hold significant promise for applications ranging from energy storage to protective coatings, to saline water and produced water treatment, owing to their chemical stability and unique barrier properties achieving a high selectivity for water permeation. However, unmodified GO membranes are not stable when submerged in liquid water, creating challenges with their commercial utilization in aqueous filtration and pervaporation applications. To mitigate this, we develop an approach to modify GO membranes through a combination of low temperature thermal reduction and metal cation crosslinking. We demonstrate that Zn 2+ -rGO and Fe 3+ -rGO membranes had the highest permeation flux of 8.3 ± 1.5 l m -2 h -1 and 7.0 ± 0.4 l m -2 h -1 , for saline water separation, respectively, when thermally reduced after metal cross-linking; These membranes maintained a high flux of 7.5 ± 0.7 l m -2 h -1 , and 5.5 ± 0.3 l m -2 h -1 for produced water separation, respectively. All the membranes had a salt rejection higher than 99%. Fe 3+ crosslinked membranes presented the highest organic solute rejections for produced water of 69%. Moreover, long term pervaporation testing was done for the Zn 2+ -rGO membrane for 12 h, and only a minor drop of 6% in permeation flux was observed, while Zn 2+ -GO had a drop of 24%. Both modifiers significantly enhanced the stability with Fe 3+ -rGO membranes displaying the highest mechanical abrasion resistance of 95% compared to non-reduced and non-crosslinked GO. Background: Early intervention in psychosis (EIP) services are nationally mandated in England to provide multidisciplinary care to people experiencing first-episode psychosis, which disproportionately affects deprived and ethnic minority youth. Quality of service provision varies by region, and people from historically underserved populations have unequal access. In other disease areas, including stroke and dementia, national digital registries coupled with clinical decision support systems (CDSSs) have revolutionized the delivery of equitable, evidence-based interventions to transform patient outcomes and reduce population-level disparities in care. Given psychosis is ranked the third most burdensome mental health condition by the World Health Organization, it is essential that we achieve the same parity of health improvements., Objective: This paper reports the protocol for the program development phase of this study, in which we aimed to co-design and produce an evidence-based, stakeholder-informed framework for the building, implementation, piloting, and evaluation of a national integrated digital registry and CDSS for psychosis, known as EPICare (Early Psychosis Informatics into Care)., Methods: We conducted 3 concurrent work packages, with reciprocal knowledge exchange between each. In work package 1, using a participatory co-design framework, key stakeholders (clinicians, academics, policy makers, and patient and public contributors) engaged in 4 workshops to review, refine, and identify a core set of essential and desirable measures and features of the EPICare registry and CDSS. Using a modified Delphi approach, we then developed a consensus of data priorities. In work package 2, we collaborated with National Health Service (NHS) informatics teams to identify relevant data currently captured in electronic health records, understand data retrieval methods, and design the software architecture and data model to inform future implementation. In work package 3, observations of stakeholder workshops and individual interviews with representative stakeholders (n=10) were subject to interpretative qualitative analysis, guided by normalization process theory, to identify factors likely to influence the adoption and implementation of EPICare into routine practice., Results: Stage 1 of the EPICare study took place between December 2021 and September 2022. The next steps include stage 2 building, piloting, implementation, and evaluation of EPICare in 5 demonstrator NHS Trusts serving underserved and diverse populations with substantial need for EIP care in England. Introduction: Tobacco use among adolescents is an ongoing public health concern. Youth tobacco use has been associated with advertising, from both online sources and retail environments., Aims and Methods: This study examined associations between exposure to tobacco advertisements from tobacco retail outlets (TROs), internet, and social media sources and ever tobacco use among adolescents. Data were obtained from youth, aged 11-17 years (N = 401) from Richmond, VA. Bayesian index and group index models were fitted to estimate indices of exposure to (1) social media use, (2) tobacco ads on social media, and (3) TRO store visits and their association with ever tobacco use. The most important components of the exposure indices were also determined based on the index component weights from the Bayesian index models., Results: In Bayesian index models of single exposures, each exposure index was significantly associated with tobacco use. In the best-fitting model, social media tobacco ads (odds ratio [OR] = 2.2; 95% credible interval [CI]: 1.2, 4.5) and TRO store visits (OR = 1.6; 95% CI: 1.1, 2.3) were significantly associated with ever tobacco use, as was older age (OR = 1.4; 95% CI: 1.2, 1.8). Index component weights revealed Snapchat ad frequency as the most important platform in the social media index and convenience stores as the most important type of store in the TRO index., Conclusions: Exposure to pro-tobacco advertisements on social media and visits to TROs are associated with adolescent ever tobacco use. Results provide support for policies that would restrict the promotion of tobacco products at TROs and on social media. Transmembrane transition metal transporter proteins are central gatekeepers in selectively controlling vectorial metal cargo uptake and extrusion across cellular membranes in all living organisms, thus playing key roles in essential and toxic metal homeostasis. Biochemical characterization of transporter-mediated translocation events and transport kinetics of redox-active metals, such as iron and copper, is challenged by the complexity in generating reconstituted systems in which vectorial metal transport can be studied in real time. We present fluorescence-based proteoliposome methods to monitor redox-active metal transmembrane translocation upon reconstitution of purified metal transporters in artificial lipid bilayers. By encapsulating turn-on/-off iron or copper-dependent sensors in the proteoliposome lumen and conducting real-time transport assays using small unilamellar vesicles (SUVs), in which selected purified Fe(II) and Cu(I) transmembrane importer and exporter proteins have been reconstituted, we provide a platform to monitor metal translocation events across lipid bilayers in real time. Hypothesis: Coating approaches which trap nanoparticles at an interface have become popular for depositing single-layer films from nanoparticle dispersions. Past efforts concluded that concentration and aspect ratio dominate the impact on aggregation state of nanospheres and nanorods at an interface. Although few works have explored the clustering behaviour of atomically thin, two-dimensional materials, we hypothesize that nanosheet concentration is the dominant factor leading to a particular cluster structure and that this local structure impacts the quality of densified Langmuir films., Experiments: We systematically studied cluster structures and Langmuir film morphologies of three different nanosheets, namely chemically exfoliated molybdenum disulfide, graphene oxide and reduced graphene oxide., Findings: We observe cluster structure transitions from island-like domains to more linear networks in all materials as dispersion concentration is reduced. Despite differences in material properties and morphologies, we obtained the same overall correlation between sheet number density (A/V) in the spreading dispersion and cluster fractal structure (d f ) is observed, with reduced graphene oxide sheets showing a slight delay upon transitioning into a lower-density cluster. Regardless of assembly method, we found that cluster structure impacts the attainable density of transferred Langmuir films. Among the many recently developed photo-catalytic materials, graphitic carbon nitride (g-C 3 N 4 ) shows great promise as a catalytic material for water splitting, hydrogen generation, and related catalytic applications. Herein, synthesized bulk g-C 3 N 4 is simply irradiated under a 35 fs pulse at mixed photon energies (800 nm and its second harmonic). g-C 3 N 4 was synthesized from melamine following a facile thermal polymerization procedure. The prepared material was introduced, in an aqueous environment, to the femtosecond laser for various lengths of time. The treated material demonstrates a significant increase in surface area, relative to the untreated samples, indicating that irradiation is a successful method for exfoliation. The subsequent characterization reveals that the mixed irradiation process drives significant defect generation and sheet growth, which is not seen under 800 nm irradiation. Extended mixed irradiation results in 4 nm thick nanosheets with lateral dimensions 4× that of the bulk material. The treated material shows improved dye absorption/removal. This novel method of defect generation and nanosheet growth shows great potential as a g-C 3 N 4 pre-treatment method for co-catalytic applications. Aim: Despite their emphasis on engagement, there has been little research on patients' and families' experiences of care in early intervention services for psychosis. We sought to compare patients' and families' experiences of care in two similar early psychosis services in Montreal, Canada and Chennai, India. Because no patient- or family-reported experience measures had been used in a low- and middle-income context, we created a new measure, Show me you care. Here we present its development and psychometric properties., Methods: Show me you care was created based on the literature and stakeholder inputs. Its patient and family versions contain the same nine items (rated on a 7-point scale) about various supportive behaviours of treatment providers towards patients and families. Patients (N = 293) and families (N = 237) completed the measure in French/English in Montreal and Tamil/English in Chennai. Test-retest reliability, internal consistency, convergent validity, and ease of use were evaluated., Results: Test-retest reliability (intra-class correlation coefficients) ranged from excellent (0.95) to good (0.66) across the patient and family versions, in Montreal and Chennai, and in English, French, and Tamil. Internal consistency estimates (Cronbach's alphas) were excellent (≥0.87). The measure was reported to be easy to understand and complete., Conclusion: Show me you care fills a gap between principles and practice by making engagement and collaboration as central to measurement in early intervention as it is to its philosophy. The use of inexpensive and widely available CO 2 lasers to selectively irradiate polymer films and form a graphene foam, termed laser-induced graphene (LIG), has incited significant research attention. The simple and rapid nature of the approach and the high conductivity and porosity of LIG have motivated its widespread application in electrochemical energy storage devices such as batteries and supercapacitors. However, nearly all high-performance LIG-based supercapacitors reported to date are prepared from costly, petroleum-based polyimide (Kapton, PI). Herein, we demonstrate that incorporating microparticles of inexpensive, non-toxic, and widely abundant sodium salts such as NaCl and Na 2 SO 4 into poly(furfuryl alcohol) (PFA) resins enables the formation of high-performance LIG. The embedded particles aid in carbonization and act as a template for pore formation. While increasing both the carbon yield and surface area of the electrodes, the salt also dopes the LIG formed with S or Cl. The combination of these effects results in a two- to four-order-of-magnitude increase in device areal capacitance, from 8 μF/cm 2 for PFA/no salt at 5 mV/s to up to 80 mF/cm 2 for some PFA/20% Na 2 SO 4 samples at 0.05 mA/cm 2 , significantly higher than that of PI-based devices and most other LIG precursors.

Orange Carotenoid protein (OCP) is the only known photoreceptor which uses carotenoid for its activation. It is found exclusively in cyanobacteria, where it functions to control light-harvesting of the photosynthetic machinery. However, the photochemical reactions and structural dynamics of this unique photosensing process are not yet resolved. We present time-resolved crystal structures at second-to-minute delays under bright illumination, capturing the early photoproduct and structures of the subsequent reaction intermediates. The first stable photoproduct shows concerted isomerization of C9'-C8' and C7'-C6' single bonds in the bicycle-pedal (s-BP) manner and structural changes in the N-terminal domain with minute timescale kinetics. These are followed by a thermally-driven recovery of the s-BP isomer to the dark state carotenoid configuration. Structural changes propagate to the C-terminal domain, resulting, at later time, in the H-bond rupture of the carotenoid keto group with protein residues. Solution FTIR and UV/Vis spectroscopy support the single bond isomerization of the carotenoid in the s-BP manner and subsequent thermal structural reactions as the basis of OCP photoreception., (© 2022. Objective: Given the paucity of functional recovery measures for young people with psychosis, we developed and conducted psychometric testing of the Functional Outcomes Interview (FOI) and the Roles and Aspirations Among Youth scale (RAY; a much-needed patient-reported outcome measure)., Method: Both measures were developed in English, Tamil, and French through discussions with professionals, participants, and families at early psychosis programs in Canada and India. The FOI assesses the number and tenure of functional roles and allows the nuanced assessment of each role in terms of performance, need for support, and quality of social contacts. The roles include work, school, household responsibilities, parenting/caregiving, and efforts to return to work/school. The RAY is a self-report of current roles and future aspirations. Test-retest reliability, internal consistency, factorial validity, and concurrent validity for the RAY; and inter-rater reliability (IRR), internal consistency, and concurrent validity for the FOI were assessed., Results: The RAY had adequate internal consistency and temporal stability and was unidimensional in factor analysis. The FOI had acceptable IRR and internal consistency, as evinced by comparable performance ratings across functional roles. Significant associations between our novel measures and well-established measures of functioning and negative symptoms indicate concurrent validity., Conclusions and Implications for Practice: The FOI and RAY were designed to be youth friendly, assess aspirations, and acknowledge individuals as desiring and holding multiple roles. They thus represent a significant advancement in assessing functional recovery in first-episode psychosis. Aim: To compare social, recreational and independent functioning among persons with psychosis across two geo-cultural contexts, we adapted the well-established Social Functioning Scale (SFS) and translated it into French and Tamil. We present the development and psychometric testing of this adaptation, the SFS-Early Intervention., Methods: Sixteen items were added to reflect contemporary youth activities (e.g., online games) and 31 items adapted to enhance applicability and/or include context-specific examples (e.g., 'church activity' replaced with 'religious/spiritual activity'). Psychometric properties and participant feedback were evaluated., Results: Test-retest reliability (ICCs) ranged from 0.813 to 0.964. Internal consistency (Cronbach's α) ranged from .749 to .936 across sites and languages. Correlations with original subscales were high. The scale was rated easy to complete and understand., Conclusions: The SFS-Early Intervention is a promising patient-reported measure of social, recreational and independent functioning. Due to its formidably high theoretical capacity (3590 mAh/g at room temperature), silicon (Si) is expected to replace graphite as the dominant anode for higher energy density lithium (Li)-ion batteries. However, stability issues stemming from silicon's significant volume expansion (∼300%) upon lithiation have slowed down commercialization. Herein, we report the design of a scalable process to engineer core-shell structures capable of buffering this volume expansion, which utilize a core made up of a poly(ethylene oxide)-carboxymethyl cellulose hydrogel and silicon protected by a crumpled graphene shell. The volume expansion of the hydrogel upon exposure to water creates a void space between the Si-Si and Si-rGO interfaces within the core when the gel dries. Unlike sacrificial spacers, the dehydrated hydrogel remains in the core and acts as an elastic Li-ion conductor, which improves the stability and high rate performance. The optimized composite electrodes retain ∼81.7% of their initial capacity (1055 mAh/(g rGO+gel+Si )) after 320 cycles when an active material loading of 1 mg/cm 2 is used. At more practical mass loadings (2.5 mg/cm 2 ), the electrodes achieve 2.04 mAh/cm 2 and retain 79% of this capacity after 200 cycles against a lithium half-cell. Full cells assembled using a lithium ion phosphate cathode lose only 6.7% of their initial capacity over 100 cycles, demonstrating the potential of this nanocomposite anode for use in next-generation Li-ion batteries.

Adhesion between similar and dissimilar materials is essential to many biological systems and synthetic materials, devices, and machines. Since the inception of adhesion science more than five decades ago, adhesion to a surface has long been recognized as beyond two-dimensional. Similarly, molecular conformation - the three-dimensional arrangement of atoms in a molecule - is ubiquitous in biology and fundamental to the binding of biomolecules. However, the connection between these concepts, which could link molecular conformation in biology to micro- and macroscopic adhesion in materials science, remains elusive. Herein, we examine this connection by manipulating the molecular conformation of a mussel-inspired universal coating, which imparts a memory for recognizing different hydrogels. This approach leads to significantly (several fold) increased interfacial adhesion between the coating and hydrogels across a broad range of length scales, from molecular to macroscopic. Furthermore, we demonstrate that imparting memory is a general and facile noncovalent approach for enhancing interfacial adhesion that, with suitable energy dissipation, can be used for the bonding of materials.

Most ionic liquids (ILs) are not surface-active and cannot, alone, be directed to assemble at surfaces─despite their potential as nonvolatile structure-directing agents and use as advanced materials in a multitude of applications. In this work, we investigate aqueous systems of common nonionic surfactants (Triton X-100 and Tween 20), which we use to solubilize 1-ethyl-3-methylimidazolium bis(trifluoromethylsulfonyl)imide. The resulting solution of mixed micelle leads to spontaneous adsorption of the IL/surfactant complex onto graphene oxide (GO) surfaces, forming a compact film. Adsorption isotherms generated by fluorescence labeling of the IL and surfactant phases are used to quantify the extent of adsorption. While sensitive to the GO dispersion concentration, upwards of 3 g IL/g GO adsorb under dilute conditions. Atomic force microscopy is used to show that the adsorbed layer uniformly distributes as an ∼1 nm thick coating (per GO side) as the system reaches the first plateau of a Langmuir-type isotherm. Adsorption beyond this plateau is possible but leads to thicker (>30 nm), inhomogeneous adsorbed layers. Both micellar size in solution and adsorbed layer thickness reduce upon the addition of IL to the surfactant phase, suggesting significant interactions among the materials and nonideal mixing of the components.

Silicon anodes have a theoretical capacity of 3590 mAh g -1 (for Li 15 Si 4 , at room temperature), which is tenfold higher than the graphite anodes used in current Li-ion batteries. This, and silicon's natural abundance, makes it one of the most promising materials for next-generation batteries. Encapsulating silicon nanoparticles (Si NPs) in a crumpled graphene shell by spray drying or spray pyrolysis are promising and scalable methods to produce core-shell structures, which buffer the extreme volume change (>300 vol %) caused by (de)lithiaton of silicon. However, capillary forces cause the graphene-based materials to tightly wrap around Si NP clusters, and there is little control over the void space required to further improve cycle life. Herein, a simple strategy is developed to engineer void-space within the core by incorporating varying amounts of similarly sized polystyrene (PS) nanospheres in the spray drier feed mixture. The PS completely decomposes during thermal reduction of the graphene oxide shell and results in Si cores of varying porosity. The best performance is achieved at a 1 : 1 ratio (PS/Si), leading to high capacities of 1638, 1468, and 1179 mAh g -1 Si+rGO at 0.1, 1, and 4 A g -1 , respectively. Moreover, at 1 A g -1 , the capacity retention is 80.6 % after 200 cycles. Sulfur cathodes for lithium-sulfur batteries often rely on integrating sulfur with high surface area carbonaceous materials. Nanoscale mixing is typically achieved by a lengthy, high-temperature melt imbibition approach that employs carbon nanomaterials in an aggregated solid form. In this work, we present a simple strategy to coat carbon nanomaterials with sulfur in a cost-effective, room-temperature process using inexpensive elemental sulfur. Our results are based on hydrophobic sulfur sols, which have rarely been examined for use in the preparation of sulfur cathodes. We study the deposition mechanism on different carbon materials and find that sulfur dissolves from the sol into the aqueous phase and coats the surface of reduced graphene oxide (rGO) by heterogeneous nucleation and growth, but that this mechanism is not favored for carbon materials such as Ketjen black (KB) and graphene oxide (GO), for which undesirable homogeneous nucleation of micron-sized, insulating sulfur crystals is observed. High loading (3-4 mg sulfur /cm 2 ) rGO-based cathodes prepared using this approach achieve discharge capacities of 1300 mAh/g sulfur (∼4.8 mAh/cm 2 ) at 0.1C and achieve capacities 7-fold higher than cells prepared via traditional melt imbibition approaches at higher rates of 0.8C and 1C. Cells prepared without the need for added binder or conductive additive achieve projected full cell energy densities of 468 Wh/kg at 0.1C when taking into account all inactive components and assuming no lithium metal degradation, indicating that the deposition of sulfur from hydrophobic sols onto carbon nanomaterials can serve as a simple, aqueous-based, one-step process to prepare high sulfur loading cathodes with high projected energy densities.

Oil and gas industries produce a huge amount of wastewater known as produced water which contains diverse contaminants including salts, dissolved organics, dispersed oils, and solids making separation and purification challenging. The chemical and thermal stability of graphene oxide (GO) membranes make them promising for use in membrane pervaporation, which may provide a more economical route to purifying this water for disposal or re-use compared to other membrane-based separation techniques. In this study, we investigate the performance and stability of GO membranes cast onto polyethersulfone (PES) supports in the separation of simulated produced water containing high salinity brackish water (30 g/L NaCl) contaminated with phenol, cresol, naphthenic acid, and an oil-in-water emulsion. The GO/PES membranes achieve water flux as high as 47.8 L m -2 h -1 for NaCl solutions for membranes operated at 60 °C, while being able to reject 99.9% of the salt and upwards of 56% of the soluble organic components. The flux for membranes tested in pure water, salt, and simulated produced water was found to decrease over 72 h of testing but only to 50-60% of the initial flux in the worst-case scenario. This drop was concurrent with an increase in contact angle and C/O ratio indicating that the GO may become partially reduced during the separation process. Additionally, a closer look at the membrane crosslinker (Zn 2+ ) was investigated and found to hydrolyze over time to Zn(OH) 2 with much of it being washed away during the long-term pervaporation.

Despite silicon being a promising candidate for next-generation lithium-ion battery anodes, self-pulverization and the formation of an unstable solid electrolyte interface, caused by the large volume expansion during lithiation/delithiation, have slowed its commercialization. In this work, we expand on a controllable approach to wrap silicon nanoparticles in a crumpled graphene shell by sealing this shell with a polydopamine-based coating. This provides improved structural stability to buffer the volume change of Si, as demonstrated by a remarkable cycle life, with anodes exhibiting a capacity of 1038 mA h/g after 200 cycles at 1 A/g. The resulting composite displays a high capacity of 1672 mA h/g at 0.1 A/g and can still retain 58% when the current density increases to 4 A/g. Introduction: Adolescents are at increased risk of secondhand smoke exposure (SHS) due to the limited control that they have over social and physical environments. Yet, knowledge regarding determinants of SHS among non-smoking adolescents is limited. This study identifies social and environmental factors associated with SHS among non-smoking adolescents., Methods: To be included, parents and adolescents (aged 11-17 years) of the Adolescents, Place, and Behavior Study had to have completed surveys between March 2019 and May 2020. Adolescents had to have not reported smoking within the past 30 days and provided a saliva sample assayed for cotinine (≤3 ng/mL). A series of stepwise linear regression models were fit to the data to identify social and environmental determinants of SHS, using log-transformed salivary cotinine., Results: Of the 105 adolescent and parent dyads included, 90.3% were African American, 26.9% of parents reported smoking, 33.3% resided in multi-unit housing, and 67.7% lived in homes where smoking was not permitted. Significant associations were found between parent tobacco use (β=2.56, SE=0.98, p=0.0082) and residing in multi-unit housing (β=1.72, SE=0.86, p=0.0460) with increased log-transformed cotinine levels among non-smoking adolescents. Adolescent age, gender, and race/ ethnicity, parental education, peer tobacco use, the number of adults and children in the home, average number of days of self-reported SHS within public spaces outside of the home, and home smoking policies were not significantly associated with cotinine., Conclusions: Results emphasize the importance of reducing secondhand smoke exposure by reducing parental smoking and altering exposures within social and home environments. Hydrological transformations induced by climate warming are causing Arctic annual fluvial energy to shift from skewed (snowmelt-dominated) to multimodal (snowmelt- and rainfall-dominated) distributions. We integrated decade-long hydrometeorological and biogeochemical data from the High Arctic to show that shifts in the timing and magnitude of annual discharge patterns and stream power budgets are causing Arctic material transfer regimes to undergo fundamental changes. Increased late summer rainfall enhanced terrestrial-aquatic connectivity for dissolved and particulate material fluxes. Permafrost disturbances (<3% of the watersheds' areal extent) reduced watershed-scale dissolved organic carbon export, offsetting concurrent increased export in undisturbed watersheds. To overcome the watersheds' buffering capacity for transferring particulate material (30 ± 9 Watt), rainfall events had to increase by an order of magnitude, indicating the landscape is primed for accelerated geomorphological change when future rainfall magnitudes and consequent pluvial responses exceed the current buffering capacity of the terrestrial-aquatic continuum.

A rapid microwave hydrothermal process is adopted for the synthesis of titanium dioxide and reduced graphene oxide nanocomposites as high-performance anode materials for Li-ion batteries. With the assistance of hydrazine hydrate as a reducing agent, graphene oxide was reduced while TiO 2 nanoparticles were grown in situ on the nanosheets to obtain the nanocomposite material. The morphology of the nanocomposite obtained consisted of TiO 2 particles with a size of ∼100 nm, uniformly distributed on the reduced graphene oxide nanosheets. The as-prepared TiO 2 -graphene nanocomposite was able to deliver a capacity of 250 mA h g -1 ± 5% at 0.2C for more than 200 cycles with remarkably stable cycle life during the Li + insertion/extraction process. In terms of high rate capability performance, the nanocomposite delivered discharge capacity of ca. 100 mA h g -1 with >99% coulombic efficiency at C-rates of up to 20C. The enhanced electrochemical performance of the material in terms of high rate capability and cycling stability indicates that the as-developed TiO 2 -rGO nanocomposites are promising electrode materials for future Li-ion batteries., Competing Interests: There are no conflicts to declare., (This journal is © The Royal Society of Chemistry.)

Background: Specialized early intervention programs for individuals experiencing a first episode of psychosis prioritize service engagement, generally operationalized as attendance, treatment completion, therapeutic alliance, and treatment adherence. However, there are critical theoretical and methodological gaps in understanding how service users experience and define their engagement with the service., Objectives: This study aimed to explore how current and former service users define their engagement with a specialized early intervention program., Design: A qualitative descriptive approach was used to explore service users' decisions to use, remain involved with, and/or leave early intervention services., Setting: This study took place in an early intervention service for psychosis in Montreal, Canada., Participants: Twenty-four participants who had experienced a first episode of psychosis and had been engaged in the service to varying degrees (fully engaged, partially engaged, disengaged) took part in in-depth interviews., Methods: In-depth interviews were employed to collect rich insights into participants' experiences and perceptions. The interviews were transcribed and analysed using thematic analysis, beginning with an inductive approach and completing the analysis using a theoretical approach. During the analysis, our original notions of engagement and disengagement were challenged by theorizing engagement in terms of agency and structure. Researchers engaged in reflexive practices to maintain and promote research rigor and trustworthiness., Results: Participants' narratives were thematically analyzed and organized into three themes: fluidity and temporality of engagement and disengagement; engagement as an ongoing negotiation; and critical structures and agency. Participants described engagement in a variety of ways, some of which were broader than service use and focused on self-care and commitment to recovery. These conceptions were subject to change as the individuals' perceptions of their needs changed. As needs changed, individuals also negotiated and renegotiated their care needs with themselves and with their treatment team. These exercises of agency were constrained by key structures: the treatment team, family and friends, and societal conceptions of mental health., Conclusions: Our study findings argue for an expanded definition of engagement which prioritizes individuals' experience and acknowledges the steps towards recovery that they may make outside of the purview of the service. Climate warming and changing precipitation patterns have thermally (active layer deepening) and physically (permafrost-thaw related mass movements) disturbed permafrost-underlain watersheds across much of the Arctic, increasing the transfer of dissolved and particulate material from terrestrial to aquatic ecosystems. We examined the multiyear (2006-2017) impact of thermal and physical permafrost disturbances on all of the major components of fluvial flux. Thermal disturbances increased the flux of dissolved organic carbon (DOC), but localized physical disturbances decreased multiyear DOC flux. Physical disturbances increased major ion and suspended sediment flux, which remained elevated a decade after disturbance, and changed carbon export from a DOC to a particulate organic carbon (POC) dominated system. As the magnitude and frequency of physical permafrost disturbance intensifies in response to Arctic climate change, disturbances will become an increasingly important mechanism to deliver POC from terrestrial to aquatic ecosystems. Although nival runoff remained the primary hydrological driver, the importance of pluvial runoff as driver of fluvial flux increased following both thermal and physical permafrost disturbance. We conclude the transition from a nival-dominated fluvial regime to a regime where rainfall runoff is proportionately more important will be a likely tipping point to accelerated High Arctic change.

Objectives: Views on who bears how much responsibility for supporting individuals with mental health problems may vary across stakeholders (patients, families, clinicians) and cultures. Perceptions about responsibility may influence the extent to which stakeholders get involved in treatment. Our objective was to report on the development, psychometric properties and usability of a first-ever tool of this construct., Methods: We created a visual weighting disk called 'ShareDisk', measuring perceived extent of responsibility for supporting persons with mental health problems. It was administered (twice, 2 weeks apart) to patients, family members and clinicians in Chennai, India ( N  = 30, 30 and 15, respectively) and Montreal, Canada ( N  = 30, 32 and 15, respectively). Feedback regarding its usability was also collected., Results: The English, French and Tamil versions of the ShareDisk demonstrated high test-retest reliability ( r s = .69-.98) and were deemed easy to understand and use., Conclusion: The ShareDisk is a promising measure of a hitherto unmeasured construct that is easily deployable in settings varying in language and literacy levels. Its clinical utility lies in clarifying stakeholder roles. It can help researchers investigate how stakeholders' roles are perceived and how these perceptions may be shaped by and shape the organization and experience of healthcare across settings.

The metallic, 1T polymorph of molybdenum disulfide (MoS 2 ) is promising for next-generation supercapacitors due to its high theoretical surface area and density which lead to high volumetric capacitance. Despite this, there are few fundamental works examining the double-layer charging mechanisms at the MoS 2 /electrolyte interface. This study examines the potential-dependent and frequency-dependent area-specific double-layer capacitance ( C a ) of the 1T and 2H polymorphs of MoS 2 in aqueous and organic electrolytes. Furthermore, we investigate restacking effects and possible intercalation-like mechanisms in multilayer films. To minimize the uncertainties associated with porous electrodes, we carry out measurements using effectively nonporous monolayers of MoS 2 and contrast their behavior with reduced graphene oxide deposited layer-by-layer on atomically flat graphite single crystals using a modified, barrier-free Langmuir-Blodgett method. The metallic 1T polymorph of MoS 2 ( C a,1T = 14.9 μF/cm 2 ) is shown to have over 10-fold the capacitance of the semiconducting 2H polymorph ( C a,2H = 1.35 μF/cm 2 ) near the open circuit potential and under negative polarization in aqueous electrolyte. However, under positive polarization the capacitance is significantly reduced and behaves similarly to the 2H polymorph. The capacitance of 1T MoS 2 scales with layer number, even at high frequency, suggesting easy and rapid ion penetration between the restacked sheets. This model system allows us to determine capacitance limits for MoS 2 and suggest strategies to increase the energy density of devices made from this promising material.

The naturally transformable cyanobacterium Synechocystis sp. PCC 6803 is a widely used chassis strain for the photosynthetic production of chemicals. However, Synechocystis possesses multiple genome copies per cell which means that segregating mutations across all genome copies can be time-consuming. Here we use flow cytometry in combination with DNA staining to investigate the effect of phosphate deprivation on the genome copy number of the glucose-tolerant GT-P sub-strain of Synechocystis 6803. Like the PCC 6803 wild type strain, the ploidy of GT-P cells grown in BG-11 medium is growth phase dependent with an average genome copy number of 6.05 ± 0.27 in early growth (OD 740 = 0.1) decreasing to 2.49 ± 0.11 in late stationary phase (OD 740 = 7). We show that a 10-fold reduction in the initial phosphate concentration of the BG-11 growth medium reduces the average genome copy number of GT-P cells from 4.51 ± 0.20 to 2.94 ± 0.13 and increases the proportion of monoploid cells from 0 to 6% after 7 days of growth. In addition, we also show that the DnaA protein, which unusually for bacteria is not required for DNA replication in Synechocystis , plays a role in restoring polyploidy upon subsequent phosphate supplementation. Based on these observations, we have developed an alternative natural transformation protocol involving phosphate depletion that decreases the time required to obtain fully segregated mutants., (Copyright © 2020 Pope, Hodge and Nixon.)

Varying perceptions of who should be responsible for supporting individuals with mental health problems may contribute to their needs remaining unmet. A qualitative descriptive design was used to explore these perceptions among key stakeholders. Focus groups were conducted with 13 service users, 12 family members, and 18 treatment providers from an early psychosis intervention program in Montreal, Canada. Individual interviews were conducted with six mental health policy-/decision-makers. Participants across stakeholder groups assigned a range of responsibilities to individuals with mental health problems, stakeholders in these individuals' immediate and extended social networks (e.g., families), macro-level stakeholders with influence (e.g., government), and society as a whole. Perceived failings of the health care system and the need for greater sharing of roles and responsibilities also emerged as important themes. Our findings suggest that different stakeholders should collectively assume certain responsibilities and that systems-level failings may contribute to unmet needs for mental health support.

Methane is a potent greenhouse gas, with large emissions occurring across gas distribution networks and mining/extraction infrastructure. The development of inexpensive, low-power electrochemical sensors could provide a cost-effective means to carry out distributed sensing to identify leaks for rapid mitigation. In this work, we demonstrate a simple and cost-effective strategy to rapidly prototype ultrasensitive electrochemical gas sensors. A room-temperature methane sensor is evaluated which demonstrates the highest reported sensitivity (0.55 μA/ppm/cm 2 ) with a rapid response time (40 s) enabling sub-ppm detection. Porous, laser-induced graphene (LIG) electrodes are patterned directly into commercial polymer films and imbibed with a palladium nanoparticle dispersion to distribute the electrocatalyst within the high surface area support. A pseudo-solid-state ionic liquid/polyvinylidene fluoride electrolyte was painted onto the flexible cell yielding a porous electrolyte, within the porous LIG electrode, simultaneously facilitating rapid gas transport and enabling the room temperature electro-oxidation pathway for methane. The performance of the amperometric sensor is evaluated as a function of methane concentration, relative humidity, and tested against interfering gases.

The Langmuir-Blodgett technique is one of the most controlled methods to deposit monomolecular layers of floating or surface active materials but has lacked the ability to coat truly large-area substrates. In this work, by manipulating single-layer dispersions of graphene oxide (GO) and thermally exfoliated GO into water-immiscible spreading solvents, unlike traditional Langmuir-Blodgett deposition which requires densification achieved by compressing barriers, we demonstrate the ability to control the 2D aggregation and densification behavior of these floating materials using a barrier-free method. This is done by controlling the edge-to-edge interactions through modified subphase conditions and by utilizing the distance-dependent spreading pressure of the deposition solvent. These phenomena allow substrates to be coated by continuous deposition and substrate withdrawal-enabling roll-to-roll deposition and patterning of large-area substrates such as flexible polyethylene terephthalate. The aggregation and solvent-driven densification phenomena are examined by in situ Brewster angle video microscopy and by measuring the local spreading pressure induced by the spreading solvent acting on the floating materials using a Langmuir-Adam balance. As an example, the performance of films deposited in this way is assessed as passivation layers for Ag nanowire-based transparent conductors.

Although, event and emergent timings are thought of as mutually exclusive, significant correlations between tapping and circle drawing (Baer, Thibodeau, Gralnick, Li, & Penhune, 2013 ; Studenka, Zelaznik, & Balasubramaniam, 2012 ; Zelaznik & Rosenbaum, 2010 ) suggest that emergent timing may not be as robust as once thought. We aimed to test this hypothesis in both a younger (18-25) and older (55-100) population. Participants performed one block of circle drawing as a baseline, then six blocks of tapping, followed by circle drawing. We examined the use of event timing. Our hypothesis that acute experience with event timing would bias an individual to use event timing during an emergent task was not supported. We, instead, support the robustness of event and emergent timing as independent timing modes.

The aim of this experiment was to document the role of multiple internal clock mechanisms and external sources of temporal feedback on reducing timing variability when two fingers tap instead of one (a phenomenon known as the bimanual advantage). Previous research documents a reduction in timed interval variability when two effectors time instead of one. In addition, interval variability decreases with multiple sources of feedback. To date, however, no research has explored the separate roles of feedback and internal timing on the bimanual advantage. We evaluated the bimanual advantage in a task that does not utilise an internal clock (circle drawing). Participants performed both unimanual and bimanual timing while tapping or drawing circles. Both tasks were performed with and without tactile feedback at the timing goal. We document reduced bimanual timing variability only for tasks that utilise internal clock-like timing (tapping). We also document reduced timing variability for timing with greater sensory feedback (tactile vs no-tactile feedback tapping). We conclude that internal clock mechanisms are necessary for bimanual advantage to occur, but that multiple sources of feedback can also serve to improve internal timing, which ties together current theories of bimanual advantage.

Aim: To better understand cultural competence in early intervention for psychosis, we compared service users' and service providers' perceptions of the importance of providers being culturally competent and attentive to aspects of culture., Methods: At a Canadian early intervention programme, a validated scale was adapted to assess service user (N = 51) and provider (N = 30) perceptions of service providers' cultural competence and the importance accorded thereto., Results: Analyses of variance revealed that the importance of service providers being culturally competent was rated highest by service providers, followed by visible minority service users, followed by white service users. Providers rated themselves as being more interested in knowing about service users' culture than service users perceived them to be., Conclusions: Service users accorded less import to service providers' cultural competence than providers themselves, owing possibly to varied socialization. Background: Individuals with mental health problems have many support needs that are often inadequately met; however, perceptions of who should be responsible for meeting these needs have been largely unexplored. Varying perceptions may influence whether, how, and to what extent relevant stakeholders support individuals with mental health problems., Aims: To critically evaluate the literature to determine who different stakeholders believe should be responsible for supporting individuals with mental health problems, what factors shape these perceptions, and how they relate to one another., Method: A critical literature review was undertaken. Following an extensive literature search, the conceptual contributions of relevant works were critically evaluated. A concept map was created to build a conceptual framework of the topic., Results: Views of individual versus societal responsibility for need provision and health; the morality of caring; and attributions of responsibility for mental illness offered valuable understandings of the review questions. Creating a concept map revealed that various interrelated factors may influence perceptions of responsibility., Conclusions: Varying perceptions of who should be responsible for supporting individuals with mental health problems may contribute to unmet support needs among this group. Our critical review helps build a much-needed conceptual framework of factors influencing perceptions of responsibility. Such a framework is essential as these views iteratively shape and reflect the complex divisions of mental healthcare roles and responsibilities. Understanding these perceptions can help define relevant stakeholders' roles more clearly, which can improve mental health services and strengthen stakeholder accountability.

Objective: Although the negative consequences associated with first-episode psychosis (FEP) have been well investigated, relatively less is known about positive changes that people may experience after FEP. Existing literature is disparate and in need of synthesis. Such a synthesis can inform the design of mental health services that foster strengths, hope, and optimism. The objective of this study was to synthesize the literature on how positive change is experienced after FEP by affected persons and their families and friends and to delineate the individual, social, and structural factors facilitating positive change., Methods: A librarian-assisted systematic review of quantitative, qualitative, and mixed-methods studies published in English between 1970 and 2015 was conducted. Articles identified from three databases (PubMed, PsycINFO, and Embase) and through additional search strategies were screened. Results sections were open coded and analyzed by using thematic synthesis., Results: Of the 2,777 studies identified, 40 were retained. The synthesis of findings showed that after FEP, service users and their families and friends experienced positive changes at the individual (for example, more insight and clarity), interpersonal (for example, improved relationships), and spiritual levels (for example, greater religiosity). In addition to being facilitated by mental health services, these positive changes were enabled by personal (for example, motivation), social (for example, family support), and spiritual (for example, prayer) factors., Conclusions: Suffering is a core experience of FEP from which a range of positive changes can follow among service users and their families and friends. It may be beneficial for mental health services to specifically strive to promote these positive changes.

A major stumbling block in the development of high energy density graphene-based supercapacitors has been maintaining high ion-accessible surface area combined with high electrode density. Herein, we develop an ionic liquid (IL)-surfactant microemulsion system that is found to facilitate the spontaneous adsorption of IL-filled micelles onto graphene oxide (GO). This adsorption distributes the IL over all available surface area and provides an aqueous formulation that can be slurry cast onto current collectors, leaving behind a dense nanocomposite film of GO/IL/surfactant. By removing the surfactant and reducing the GO through a low-temperature (360 °C) heat treatment, the IL plays a dual role of spacer and electrolyte. We study the effect of IL content and operating temperature on the performance, demonstrating a record high gravimetric capacitance (302 F/g at 1 A/g) for 80 wt % IL composites. At 60 wt % IL, combined high capacitance and bulk density (0.76 g/cm 3 ), yields one of the highest volumetric capacitances (218 F/cm 3 , at 1 A/g) ever reported for a high-voltage IL-based supercapacitor. While achieving promising rate performance and cycle-life, the approach also eliminates the long and costly electrolyte imbibition step of cell assembly as the electrolyte is cast directly with the electrode material.

Silver nanowire transparent electrodes have shown considerable potential to replace conventional transparent conductive materials. However, in this report we show that Joule heating is a unique and serious problem with these electrodes. When conducting current densities encountered in organic solar cells, the average surface temperature of indium tin oxide (ITO) and silver nanowire electrodes, both with sheet resistances of 60 ohms/square, remains below 35 °C. However, in contrast to ITO, the temperature in the nanowire electrode is very non-uniform, with some localized points reaching temperatures above 250 °C. These hotspots accelerate nanowire degradation, leading to electrode failure after 5 days of continuous current flow. We show that graphene, a commonly used passivation layer for these electrodes, slows nanowire degradation and creates a more uniform surface temperature under current flow. However, the graphene does not prevent Joule heating in the nanowires and local points of high temperature ultimately shift the failure mechanism from nanowire degradation to melting of the underlying plastic substrate. In this paper, surface temperature mapping, lifetime testing under current flow, post-mortem analysis, and modelling illuminate the behaviour and failure mechanisms of nanowires under extended current flow and provide guidelines for managing Joule heating.

Amoxicillin-clavulanate (A/C) is currently the most effective oral antimicrobial in treating children with acute otitis media (AOM), but the standard dosage of 90 mg amoxicillin/6.4 mg clavulanate/kg of body weight/day commonly causes diarrhea. We examined whether an A/C formulation containing lower concentrations of clavulanate would result in less diarrhea while maintaining plasma levels of amoxicillin and clavulanate adequate to eradicate middle-ear pathogens and to achieve clinical success. We conducted an open-label study in children with AOM who were 6 to 23 months of age. In phase 1, we treated 40 children with a reduced-clavulanate A/C formulation providing 90 mg amoxicillin/3.2 mg clavulanate/kg/day for 10 days. In phase 2, we treated 72 children with the same formulation at a dosage of 80 mg amoxicillin/2.85 mg clavulanate/kg/day for 10 days. We compared the rates of protocol-defined diarrhea (PDD), diaper dermatitis, and AOM clinical response in these children with rates we had reported in children who received the standard A/C regimen, and we obtained plasma levels of amoxicillin and clavulanate at various time points. Outcomes in phase 1 children and in children who had received the standard regimen did not differ significantly. Rates of PDD in children receiving phase 2 and standard regimens were 17% and 26%, respectively ( P = 0.10). The corresponding rates of diaper dermatitis were 21% and 33% ( P = 0.04) and of AOM treatment failure were 12% and 16% ( P = 0.44). Symptomatic responses did not differ significantly between regimens; both gave clavulanate levels sufficient to inhibit β-lactamase activity. In young children with AOM, clavulanate dosages lower than those currently used may be associated with fewer side effects without reducing clinical efficacy. Background: Limiting the duration of antimicrobial treatment constitutes a potential strategy to reduce the risk of antimicrobial resistance among children with acute otitis media., Methods: We assigned 520 children, 6 to 23 months of age, with acute otitis media to receive amoxicillin-clavulanate either for a standard duration of 10 days or for a reduced duration of 5 days followed by placebo for 5 days. We measured rates of clinical response (in a systematic fashion, on the basis of signs and symptomatic response), recurrence, and nasopharyngeal colonization, and we analyzed episode outcomes using a noninferiority approach. Symptom scores ranged from 0 to 14, with higher numbers indicating more severe symptoms., Results: Children who were treated with amoxicillin-clavulanate for 5 days were more likely than those who were treated for 10 days to have clinical failure (77 of 229 children [34%] vs. 39 of 238 [16%]; difference, 17 percentage points [based on unrounded data]; 95% confidence interval, 9 to 25). The mean symptom scores over the period from day 6 to day 14 were 1.61 in the 5-day group and 1.34 in the 10-day group (P=0.07); the mean scores at the day-12-to-14 assessment were 1.89 versus 1.20 (P=0.001). The percentage of children whose symptom scores decreased more than 50% (indicating less severe symptoms) from baseline to the end of treatment was lower in the 5-day group than in the 10-day group (181 of 227 children [80%] vs. 211 of 233 [91%], P=0.003). We found no significant between-group differences in rates of recurrence, adverse events, or nasopharyngeal colonization with penicillin-nonsusceptible pathogens. Clinical-failure rates were greater among children who had been exposed to three or more children for 10 or more hours per week than among those with less exposure (P=0.02) and were also greater among children with infection in both ears than among those with infection in one ear (P<0.001)., Conclusions: Among children 6 to 23 months of age with acute otitis media, reduced-duration antimicrobial treatment resulted in less favorable outcomes than standard-duration treatment; in addition, neither the rate of adverse events nor the rate of emergence of antimicrobial resistance was lower with the shorter regimen. We demonstrate that functionalized graphene, rich with lattice defects but lean with oxygen sites, catalyzes the reduction of Co(III)(bpy)3 as well as platinum does, exhibiting a rate of heterogeneous electron transfer, k0, of ∼6 × 10(-3) cm/s. We show this rate to be an order of magnitude higher than on oxygen-site-rich graphene oxide, and over 2 orders of magnitude higher than on the basal plane of graphite (as a surrogate for pristine graphene). Furthermore, dye-sensitized solar cells using defect-rich graphene monolayers perform similarly to those using platinum nanoparticles as the catalyst.

We use electrochemical impedance spectroscopy to measure the effect of diluting a hydrophobic room temperature ionic liquid with miscible organic solvents on the differential capacitance of the glassy carbon-electrolyte interface. We show that the minimum differential capacitance increases with dilution and reaches a maximum value at ionic liquid contents near 5-10 mol% (i.e., ∼1 M). We provide evidence that mixtures with 1,2-dichloroethane, a low-dielectric constant solvent, yield the largest gains in capacitance near the open circuit potential when compared against two traditional solvents, acetonitrile and propylene carbonate. To provide a fundamental basis for these observations, we use a coarse-grained model to relate structural variations at the double layer to the occurrence of the maximum. Our results reveal the potential for the enhancement of double-layer capacitance through dilution.

The parent core structure of mycosporine-like amino acids (MAAs) is 4-deoxygadusol, which, in cyanobacteria, is derived from conversion of the pentose phosphate pathway intermediate sedoheptulose 7-phosphate by the enzymes 2-epi-5-epivaliolone synthase (EVS) and O-methyltransferase (OMT). Yet, deletion of the EVS gene from Anabaena variabilis ATCC 29413 was shown to have little effect on MAA production, thus suggesting that its biosynthesis is not exclusive to the pentose phosphate pathway. Herein, we report how, using pathway-specific inhibitors, we demonstrated unequivocally that MAA biosynthesis occurs also via the shikimate pathway. In addition, complete in-frame gene deletion of the OMT gene from A. variabilis ATCC 29413 reveals that, although biochemically distinct, the pentose phosphate and shikimate pathways are inextricably linked to MAA biosynthesis in this cyanobacterium. The intrinsic electrocatalytic properties of functionalized graphene sheets (FGSs) in nitric oxide (NO) sensing are determined by cyclic voltammetry with FGS monolayer electrodes. The degrees of reduction and defectiveness of the FGSs are varied by employing different heat treatments during their fabrication. FGSs with intermediate degrees of reduction and high Raman ID to IG peak ratios exhibit an NO oxidation peak potential of 794 mV (vs 1 M Ag/AgCl), closely matching values obtained with a platinized Pt control (791 mV) as well as recent results from the literature on porous or biofunctionalized electrodes. We show that the peak potential obtained with FGS electrodes can be further reduced to 764 mV by incorporation of electrode porosity using a drop-casting approach, indicating a stronger apparent electrocatalytic effect on porous FGS electrodes as compared to platinized Pt. Taking into consideration effects of electrode morphology, we thereby demonstrate that FGSs are intrinsically as catalytic toward NO oxidation as platinum. The lowered peak potential of porous FGS electrodes is accompanied by a significant increase in peak current, which we attribute either to pore depletion effects or an amplification effect due to subsequent electrooxidation reactions. Our results suggest that the development of sensor electrodes with higher sensitivity and lower detection limits should be feasible with FGSs.

Objective: Diagnostic stability is an important indicator of the reliability and validity of psychiatric diagnoses and has implications in clinical practice and research. While several studies have investigated the diagnostic stability of first-episode psychosis (FEP) disorders, less is known about psychiatric comorbidity in FEP and the persistence of such comorbid conditions over time. Our study aimed to confirm the diagnostic stability of FEP disorders and determine the variation in persistence of comorbid substance use disorders (SUDs), mood disorders, and anxiety disorders over 1 year., Method: The Structured Clinical Interview for DSM-IV-TR Axis I Disorders-Patient Edition was conducted at first presentation and repeated after 1 year (or reconstructed) for 214 FEP patients at the Prevention and Early Intervention Program for Psychoses-Montreal., Results: Psychotic disorder diagnoses were retained by 76.2% of patients at 1 year, schizophrenia being the most stable diagnosis (92.1%). Most diagnostic shifts were to schizophrenia and schizophrenia spectrum disorders. Comorbid SUDs, anxiety disorders, and mood disorders persisted for 50.7%, 64.0%, and 16.7% of patients, respectively. Many new cases of each of these disorders also emerged at 1-year follow-up., Conclusions: These findings demonstrate the stability of primary psychotic disorder diagnoses and greater fluidity of comorbid psychiatric diagnoses, with anxiety disorders persisting as comorbid conditions more than mood disorders and SUDs. These results highlight the importance of repeating a structured diagnostic assessment longitudinally, especially for consideration of comorbid conditions.

Objective: To determine whether a novel optimized plasmid carrying the porcine growth hormone-releasing hormone (GHRH) wild-type cDNA administered at a lower dose was as effective at eliciting physiologic responses as a commercial GHRH plasmid approved for use in Australia., Animals: 134 gilts., Procedures: Estrus was synchronized and gilts were bred. Pregnant gilts were assigned to 2 treatment groups (40 gilts/group) or 1 untreated control group (24 gilts). Gilts in one of the treatment groups received the commercial GHRH plasmid, whereas gilts in the other treatment group received a novel optimized GHRH plasmid; both plasmids were administered IM in the right hind limb, which was followed by electroporation. Sow and litter performance were monitored for the 3 gestations after treatment., Results: A significant increase in insulin-like growth factor-I concentrations, decrease in perinatal mortality rate, increase in the number of pigs born alive, and increase in the weight and number of pigs weaned were detected for both groups receiving the GHRH-expressing plasmids, compared with values for the control group. Additionally, there was a significant decrease in sow attrition in GHRH-treated females, compared with attrition in the control group, during the 3 gestations after treatment., Conclusions and Clinical Relevance: Both of the GHRH plasmids provided significant benefits for sow performance and baby pig survivability for pregnant and lactating sows and their offspring during the 3 gestations after treatment, compared with results for untreated control gilts. Use of a novel optimized plasmid reduced the effective plasmid dose in these large mammals.
