AbstractIodine (I) is a beneficial micronutrient for crop plants and essential for human health, yet approximately two billion people worldwide suffer from I deficiency, resulting in significant health issues. Agricultural soils often lack sufficient I, resulting in crops with low I content. However, tomatoes have shown potential to accumulate I when supplemented externally, making them an ideal candidate for I biofortification, particularly as an alternative to iodized salt for individuals on low-sodium diets. This two-year greenhouse pot experiment evaluated the effectiveness of foliar application of potassium iodide (KI) in biofortifying two commercial tomato hybrids. Different concentrations of I (0, 1, 3, 6, and 9 mM/plant) were applied as foliar treatments to assess their effects on physiological parameters, yield attributes, and quality traits, especially I enrichment in tomato fruit. The results demonstrated that foliar application of KI significantly increased fruit I contents at concentrations that also promoted overall plant growth and development. These findings underscored the efficient translocation of I through the phloem in tomatoes. I enrichment in tomato fruits ranged up to 5.27 mg/kg, exceeding the recommended daily allowance (RDA) of 150 μg/day. Even lower doses of 1–3 mM KI were effective in achieving significant I enrichment suitable for biofortification programs. In conclusion, tomato emerged as an excellent candidate for agronomic biofortification with I due to the practicality, and affordability of foliar application. The study highlights the potential of foliar I application as a feasible strategy for addressing global I deficiency, emphasizing its suitability for widespread adoption by farmers. In many industrial applications, nonwoven fibre networks are facilitated to operate under partly saturated conditions, allowing for filtration, liquid absorption and liquid transport. Resolving the governing liquid distribution in loaded polyamide-6 (PA6) fibre networks using X-ray computed micro-tomography is a challenge due to the similar X-ray attenuation coefficients of water and PA6 and limitations in using background subtraction techniques if the network is deformed, which will be the case if subjected to compression. In this work, we developed a method using a potassium iodide solution in water to enhance the liquid's attenuation coefficient without modifying the water's rheological properties. Therefore, we studied the evolving liquid distribution in loaded and partly saturated PA6 fibre networks on the microscale. Increasing the external load applied to the network, we observed an exponential decrease in air content while the liquid content was constant, increasing the overall saturation with increasing network strain. Furthermore, the microstructural properties created by the punch-needle process in the manufacturing of the network significantly influenced the out-of-plane liquid distribution. The method has been proven helpful in understanding the results of adaptions in both the fibre network design and manufacturing process, allowing for investigating the resulting liquid distribution on a microscale. Potassium iodide has demonstrated several therapeutic applications over time, being the choice for shielding the thyroid during radiation emergencies involving radioiodine release. Amidst the ongoing military conflict between Ukraine and Russia and the growing concern regarding the potential deployment of nuclear weapons, there has been a surge in the demand for potassium iodide across Europe. This work aimed to comprehensively review the current knowledge regarding the pharmacology, physiology, adverse effects, the protective role in reducing the risk of thyroid cancer and recommendations for potassium iodide use during radiation emergencies. Evidence on adverse effects is scarce, as potassium iodide is generally well‐tolerated. Guidelines for thyroid blocking with potassium iodide during radiation emergencies suggest that, among populations vulnerable to radioiodine exposure, the benefits of potassium iodide outweigh the risks of adverse effects. Controversial topics surrounding the utilization of potassium iodide in radiation emergencies include the prophylaxis in iodine‐deficient regions and following the detonation of dirty bombs, whether granule formulations versus tablets should be used and mental health concerns. Although the rise in demand seems to be a justified security measure, it is essential to recognize that potassium iodide protects the thyroid from radioiodine and does not impact the body's absorption of other radioactive materials or defend against external radiation exposure. Bacteria in the oral cavity have a great impact on caries formation by demineralizing tooth enamel. Bacterial infection should be prevented before restorative treatments. Rather than invasive treatment of existing caries, arresting bacterial activity in carious lesion and remineralizing dental tissue have become the goal of contemporary caries management philosophy. Silver compounds with antimicrobial effects have been developed over time and have taken their place in dentistry. 'Silver Diamine Fluoride' was created by combining the remineralizing effect of fluoride with the cariostatic effect of silver. Its popularity has increased because it appeals to the general population. It's application is painless, simple, and affordable. Our aim in this review is to provide a general perspective on the usage areas of Silver Diamine Fluoride from past to present and to create a guide for its use in pediatric patients. Cold acclimation before winter has been shown to enhance the cold tolerance of evergreen conifers, including Pinus massoniana Lamb., a characteristic heteroblastic foliage tree in the conifer. In the initial growing season of P. massoniana, both primary needle seedlings (PNSs) and secondary needle seedlings (SNSs) are generated. While previous research has highlighted differences in the morphological structure and photosynthetic physiological functions of primary and secondary needles, their response to cold acclimation remains poorly understood. This study aimed to investigate the changes in morpho-anatomical structure, starch grain accumulation, and lignin deposition in the roots, stems, and leaves of PNSs and SNSs during cold acclimation using solid potassium iodide and hydrochloric acid phloroglucinol double-staining techniques. The results revealed that, during cold acclimation, the leaves and stems of PNSs exhibited sensitivity to low-temperature stress, resulting in noticeable shrinkage and fracture of mesophyll and cortical parenchyma cells. Furthermore, the early stages of cold acclimation promoted the accumulation of starch grains and lignin in the seedling tissues. In contrast to PNSs, the leaves and stems of SNSs exhibited a shorter cold acclimation period, attributed to the hydrolysis of starch grains in the epidermal cell walls and the transformation of xylem lignin, which supports cell structure stability and enhances cold resistance. In conclusion, these findings suggest that SNSs displayed a superior cold resistance potential compared to PNSs following cold acclimation, providing a significant theoretical basis for the further screening of cold-tolerant germplasm resources of P. massoniana and the analysis of cold resistance traits in heteroblastic foliage. Taking iodine-peroxide and diphenyldiselelen ether as raw materials, dimethyl sulfoxide as solvent, ammonium iodide and potassium tert-butoxide as catalysts, C Se bond coupling was formed at room temperature, and 11 selenium aryl peroxides were synthesized. By using HNMR spectroscopy, CNMR spectroscopy and mass spectrometry, the products were characterized and analyzed separately. Through a series of control experiments, the reaction was determined to be ionic and the corresponding reaction mechanism was inferred. Background and Objectives: Zygomycosis, a severe form of fungal infection, is classified into two categories: Mucorales and Entomophthorales. Within the Entomophthorales category, Basidiobolomycosis is a rarely recognized genus that can have significant health implications. Prompt diagnosis and appropriate treatment, which includes the use of antifungal medication and surgical procedures, are vital for enhancing the prognosis of patients. The objective of this study is to investigate the response to treatment in patients hospitalized due to basidiobolomycosis. Methods: We carried out a retrospective study, in which we analyzed data from 49 patients who were diagnosed with Entomophthorale, Zygomycosis, and Basidiobolomycosis at Namazi Hospital, Shiraz, between the years 1997 and 2019. The data included parameters such as demographic information, clinical symptoms, imaging findings, treatment methods, and patient outcomes. Results: Out of 49 patients, 24 children, predominantly male (83.3%), were definitively diagnosed with basidiobolomycosis. The ages of the patients ranged from 1 to 16 years, with an average of 5.75 years. The most frequently observed clinical manifestations included abdominal pain (70.8%), fever (54.2%), hematochezia (41.7%), vomiting (20.8%), and anorexia (16.7%). Half of the patients exhibited failure to thrive (FTT), while abdominal distension was present in 25% of the cases, and a palpable abdominal mass was found in 37% of the patients. The primary treatment strategy incorporated surgical interventions complemented by a comprehensive antifungal regimen. This regimen included medications such as amphotericin B, cotrimoxazole, itraconazole, potassium iodide, and voriconazole. These were mainly administered in a combination therapy pattern or as a monotherapy of amphotericin B. Twenty-two patients were discharged, while two patients died due to complications from the disease. Conclusion: Our findings indicate that the prevailing treatment modalities generally involve surgical intervention supplemented by antifungal regimens, including Amphotericin B, Cotrimoxazole, Potassium Iodide, and Itraconazole. A voltammetric method for determining itopride hydrochloride (ITP) based on titration of the analyte with a solution of photogenerated iodine obtained by irradiation of an auxiliary solution containing potassium iodide and a mixture of sensitizers (nsodium eosinate:nuranine = 1:1) at pH 5.68 was developed. Stabilization of the current in the amperometric unit circuit indicated the reaction of the titrant with ITP was complete and provided control of the ITP content in the preparation by the change in the current strength because the iodine content in the solution was controlled by a voltammetric method. Further irradiation of the solution and measurement of the generation time required to replenish the lost titrant also allowed regulation of the ITP content in the preparation. The dependence of the analytical signal on the ITP concentration was linear in the range 8.0 – 40.0 mg. The calculated limits of detection (LD) and quantification (LQ) were 33.0 and 11.0 mg by varying the current and generation time, respectively. The developed method met requirements given in the manual on validation of bioanalytical methods, was easy to use, and did not require expensive equipment and reagents. Acidizing is a vital oil well stimulation exercise but must be done with an effective corrosion inhibitor to reduce corrosion risk. It is, however becoming increasingly difficult to find a corrosion inhibitor that is ecologically compatible and effective in strong acids and high temperatures. In this scientific communication, aspartame (ASP), sodium dodecylsufate (SDS), and potassium iodide (KI) blend is presented as a highly efficient inhibitor for T95 steel in 28 wt.% HCl solution at 60–90 °C. The corrosion inhibition investigation was performed using weight loss and electrochemical (electrochemical impedance spectroscopy [EIS] and potentiodynamic polarization [PDP]) techniques complemented by surface analysis of the corroded steel without and with the inhibitor using scanning electron microscope (SEM)/energy dispersive x-ray spectrophotometer (EDX), and 3D optical profilometry (OP). ASP is an effective corrosion inhibitor for T95 steel in an acidizing environment. The inhibition efficiency (IE) increased with an increase in concentration and temperature. The additives (SDS and KI) enhanced the inhibitive performance of ASP due to synergistic effects, especially at 90 °C where an IE of 96% is tenable. Itraconazole (ITZ) is the most used drug to treat feline sporotrichosis; however, little is known about its pharmacokinetics in cats with this mycosis. The aim of this study was to determine plasma ITZ concentrations in cats with sporotrichosis treated with ITZ as monotherapy or in combination with potassium iodide (KI). Cats diagnosed with sporotrichosis received orally ITZ (100 mg/cat/day) or combination therapy with ITZ (100 mg/cat/day) and KI (2.5–5 mg/kg/day) in the case of worsening or stagnation of the clinical condition. At each monthly visit, blood samples were collected at an interval of 4 h for analysis of trough and peak plasma ITZ concentrations by HPLC. Clinical features and laboratory parameters were evaluated during follow-up. Sixteen cats were included in the study. The median plasma ITZ concentration of all cats was 0.75 µg/mL. The median plasma ITZ concentration was 0.5 µg/mL in cats that received ITZ monotherapy (n  = 12) and 1.0 µg/mL in those treated with ITZ + KI (n  = 4). The clinical cure rate was 56.3% (n  = 9) and the median treatment duration was 8 weeks. Nine cats (56.3%) developed adverse clinical reactions, and hyporexia was the most frequent (n  = 8; 88.9%). Serum alanine aminotransferase was elevated in four cats (25%). The median plasma ITZ concentration detected in cats was considered to be therapeutic (>0.5 µg/mL) and was reached after 4 weeks of treatment. Plasma ITZ concentrations were higher in cats that received ITZ + KI compared to those treated only with ITZ, suggesting pharmacokinetic synergism between these drugs. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This comprehensive literature review examines the use of silver diamine fluoride (SDF) for the prevention and treatment of enamel carious lesions. SDF has been approved by different international drug associations as a caries-preventing agent to be used on deep carious lesions (dentin). However, SDF can cause staining of exposed tooth structures. Furthermore, the effect of SDF on the bond of adhesives to the tooth structure is still being determined. This review explores various studies on the use of SDF to treat enamel carious lesions, highlighting its effectiveness and preventive action. The literature suggests that SDF inhibits bacterial growth, promotes remineralization, and does not negatively affect adhesive retentions. Potassium iodide (KI) or glutathione (GSH) can reduce staining and discoloration. However, the reviewed studies have limitations. Further research, including well-designed clinical trials, is necessary to validate the findings and evaluate the long-term implications of SDF treatment. Conclusion: Despite the above-mentioned limitations, SDF shows potential as a therapy for enamel caries prevention, remineralization, and use as an adjuvant to other dental treatments, warranting further investigation and the refinement of application methods. Applying a saturated potassium iodide (KI) solution immediately after silver diamine fluoride (SDF) application may affect the inhibitory effects of SDF on biofilm formation. This study compared the efficacy of 38% SDF with and without KI on preventing mixed-species biofilm formation on human root dentin surfaces and assessed ion incorporation into root dentin. The biofilms, composed of Streptococcus mutans, Lactobacillus rhamnosus, and Actinomyces naeslundii, were grown on specimen surfaces treated with either SDF or SDF + KI. After 24 h, the biofilms were evaluated using scanning electron microscopy, live/dead staining, adenosine triphosphate (ATP) assays, colony-forming unit (CFU) counts, and quantitative polymerase chain reaction. A Mann–Whitney U test was used to compare the results between the groups. Ion incorporation was assessed using an electron probe microanalyzer. The relative ATP content in the SDF + KI group was significantly higher than that in the SDF group (p < 0.05). However, biofilm morphology and the logarithmic reduction in CFUs and bacterial DNA were comparable across the groups. The SDF + KI treatment resulted in less silver and fluoride ion incorporation than that yielded by SDF alone. The inhibitory effects of SDF and SDF + KI on mixed-species biofilm formation were almost equivalent, although KI application affected the ion incorporation. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Objective: This study aimed to assess the remineralization efficacy of casein phosphopeptide‐amorphous calcium phosphate (CPP‐ACP), silver diamine fluoride/potassium iodide (SDF/KI), and sodium fluoride with functionalized tricalcium phosphate (NaF/fTCP) on artificial early enamel lesion using laser fluorescence and micro‐CT analysis. Methodology: On extracted impacted third molars, artificial enamel lesions were prepared. Twenty‐eight specimens were randomly assigned to four groups (n = 7 per group): a control group (artificial saliva), CPP‐ACP (GC Tooth Mousse), SDF/KI (Riva Star), and NaF/fTCP (Clinpro White varnish). Following the manufacturer's instructions, the remineralization agents were applied to demineralized surfaces. Laser fluorescence and micro‐CT were used to evaluate the remineralization efficacy of the agents and analyzes were performed during four stages: before demineralization, after demineralization, 1st day of remineralization and 30th day of remineralization. Shapiro–Wilk test, repeated measures two‐way ANOVA, and Spearman correlation tests were used for statistical analysis. A significant level of p < 0.05 was established. Results: SDF/KI significantly reduced the lesion area and lesion volume on the demineralized enamel surface after 30 days of remineralization. In the T3 period, SDF/KI increased the mineral density statistically significantly compared to the T1 period. The laser fluorescence values for all three remineralizing agents exhibited a linear decrease. A significant correlation between the fluorescence values and the mineral density was found (p = 0.01). Conclusion: All three investigated agents were showed positive remineralization efficacy on artificial enamel lesion. However, SDF/KI, containing silver diamine fluoride and potassium iodide exhibited superior than other agents in promoting remineralization. Clinical Significance: Although all three remineralization agents showed positive remineralization efficacy on artificial enamel lesions, SDF had higher remineralization performance over the other two agents. Abstract Background The black staining effect of silver-containing solutions for use to arrest caries can have a negative aesthetic impact on children and parents. This study aims to assess the staining effects of Silver Diamine Fluoride/Potassium Iodide (SDF/KI), SDF and Nanosilver Fluoride (NSF). Materials and methods Forty-four extracted carious primary molars were collected and randomly divided into four groups (n = 11). The carious tissue in all teeth was removed using a chemo-mechanical caries removal agent with an excavator. After caries removal in all groups, SDF, SDF/KI, and NSF were applied to the different groups, while no solution was applied to the control group. Subsequently, the teeth in all groups were restored with compomer. Color values L*, a* and b* were measured using a spectrophotometer at three time points: immediately after compomer restoration (T0), one week later (T1), and four week later (T2). A series of some new 1,3,4‐oxadiazole derivatives was synthesized. Hydrazide derivative 4 was reacted with some sugar aldehydes to give the corresponding sugar hydrazones 5 a–c. Acetylation of 5 a–c with acetic anhydride in pyridine, managed the per‐O‐acetyl derivatives 6 a–c while refluxing in acetic anhydride gave the corresponding 1,3,4‐oxadiazolines 7 a–c. On the other hand, 1,3,4‐oxadiazoles 8 a,b, 9, 10, 12, 14, and 15 were synthesized via the reaction of 4 with different reagents including p‐chlorobenzoic acid, nicotinic acid, methyl iodide, morpholine, phenyl isothiocyanate, potassium iodide, chloroacetyl chloride, and phosphorus oxychloride, respectively. The new compounds were assessed for their anticancer and antioxidant activities. Compounds 8 a,b, 10, and 12–15 displayed the most antioxidant activity. Previous studies have shown that antimicrobial photodynamic inactivation (aPDI) can be strongly potentiated by the addition of the non-toxic inorganic salt, potassium iodide (KI). This approach was shown to apply to many different photosensitizers, including the xanthene dye Rose Bengal (RB) excited by green light (540 nm). Rose Bengal diacetate (RBDA) is a lipophilic RB derivative that is easily taken up by cells and hydrolyzed to produce an active photosensitizer. Because KI is not taken up by microbial cells, it was of interest to see if aPDI mediated by RBDA could also be potentiated by KI. The addition of 100 mM KI strongly potentiated the killing of Gram-positive methicillin-resistant Staphylocccus aureus, Gram-negative Eschericia coli, and fungal yeast Candida albicans when treated with RBDA (up to 15 µM) for 2 hours followed by green light (540 nm, 10 J/cm2). Both RBDA aPDI regimens (400 µM RBDA with or without 400 mM KI followed by 20 J/cm2 green light) accelerated the healing of MRSA-infected excisional wounds in diabetic mice, without damaging the host tissue. A 71-year-old woman was diagnosed with unresectable metastatic follicular thyroid carcinoma (FTC) and thyrotoxicosis. She was negative for the presence of thyroxine receptor antibody and thyroid-stimulating antibody. Whole-body scintigraphy revealed increased 99mTc-pertechnetate uptake in metastatic bone lesions but not in the thyroid nodule. Since radioactive iodine therapy was not applicable because the canalis vertebralis had been invaded, treatment with lenvatinib was initiated, along with methimazole and potassium iodide. The serum level of thyroid hormone decreased. The patient developed hypothyroidism, which continued after the methimazole was stopped, suggesting that lenvatinib suppressed the hyperthyroidism. To our best knowledge, this is the first report of a patient with functioning bone lesions of metastatic FTC in whom hyperthyroidism was controlled by lenvatinib without radioactive iodine therapy. Simple Summary: An excessive consumption of iodine is associated with pancreatic damage. It is unknown whether iodine's chemical forms from the diet are related because these are transported by active or passive transport in the cell and exert antioxidant or oxidant effects according to the chemical iodine form. This research analyzes two chemical forms effects in metabolic markers levels, the insulin pathway IRS/Akt/P-Akt/GLUT4, and PPAR-γ, and C/EBP-β in a murine model. Background: Human beings consume different chemical forms of iodine in their diet. These are transported by different mechanisms in the cell. The forms of iodine can be part of thyroid hormones, bind to lipids, be an antioxidant, or be an oxidant, depending on their chemical form. The excessive consumption of iodine has been associated with pancreatic damage and diabetes mellitus type 2, but the association between disease and the chemical form consumed in the diet is unknown. This research analyzes the effect of excessive iodine consumption as Lugol (molecular iodine/potassium iodide solution) and iodate on parameters of pancreatic function, thyroid and lipid profiles, antioxidant and oxidant status, the expression of IR/Akt/P-Akt/GLUT4, and transcription factors PPAR-γ and CEBP-β. Methods: Three groups of Wistar rats were treated with 300 μg/L of iodine in drinking water: (1) control, (2) KIO3, and (3) Lugol. Results: Lugol and KIO3 consumption increased total iodine levels. Only KIO3 increased TSH levels. Both induced high serum glucose levels and increased oxidative stress and pancreatic alpha-amylase activity. Insulin levels and antioxidant status decreased significantly. PPAR-γ and C/EBP-β mRNA expression increased. Conclusion: The pancreatic damage, hypertriglyceridemia, and oxidative stress were independent of the chemical form of iodine consumed. These effects depended on PPAR-γ, C/EBP-β, GLUT-4, and IR. Identifying the detailed anatomies of the coronary microvasculature remains an area of research; one needs to develop methods for non-destructive, high-resolution, three-dimensional imaging of these vessels for computational modeling. Currently employed Micro-Computed Tomography (Micro-CT) protocols for vasa vasorum analyses require organ dissection and, in most cases, non-clearable contrast agents. Here, we describe a method developed for a non-destructive, economical means to achieve high-resolution images of the human coronary microvasculature without organ dissection. Formalin-fixed human hearts were cannulated using venogram balloon catheters, which were then fixed into the specimen's aortic root. The canulated hearts, protected by a polyethylene bag, were placed in radiolucent containers filled with insulating polyurethane foam to reduce movement. For vasculature staining, iodine potassium iodide (IKI, Lugol's solution; 6.3% Potassium Iodide, 4.1% Iodide) was injected. Contrast distributions were monitored using a North Star Imaging X3000 micro-CT scanner with low-radiation settings, followed by high-radiation scanning (3600 rad, 60 kV, 900 mA) for the final high-resolution imaging. We successfully imaged four intact human hearts presenting with chronic total coronary occlusions of the right coronary artery. This imaging enabled detailed analyses of the vasa vasorum surrounding stenosed and occluded segments. After imaging, the hearts were cleared of iodine and excess polyurethane foam and returned to their initial formalin-fixed state for indefinite storage. Conclusions: the described methodologies allow for the non-destructive, high-resolution micro-CT imaging of coronary microvasculature in intact human hearts, paving the way for detailed computational 3D microvascular reconstructions with a macrovascular context. The synthesis of a pectin biopolymer and ionic salt (KI)-incorporated biopolymer composite electrolyte system is reported in this communication for electrochemical device fabrication. The solution cast technique is used to create composite electrolyte films of synthesized pectin biopolymer with KI salt at different concentrations. The conductivity achieved for the pectin biopolymer-based electrolyte films is up to the order of 8.1 × 10−6 S/cm, which is an increase of three orders over the conductivity (2.7 × 10−9 S/cm) of pure pectin. Electrical, structural, and optical studies of the biopolymer electrolyte films are carried out and described. The optical properties are represented by polarized optical microscopy images which show the amorphous nature of the electrolytes films. The electrochemical stability window (ESW) presents a potential window of 1.82 V, which makes the electrolyte film suitable for device fabrication. Copper leaching presents an environmentally friendly alternative to traditional sulfide ore processing methods. This study investigates an efficient leaching process for copper concentrate, utilizing a solution of sulfuric acid (H2SO4) and potassium iodide (KI) in a chloride medium (NaCl), enhanced by hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) at room temperature. A significant aspect of this research was optimizing the KI concentration to minimize iodide sublimation into iodine gas (I2). Through the experimental design, the optimal dosages of reagents were determined, leading to maximized copper extraction of approximately 27% in 45 min of testing at room temperature. The results showed that it is possible to obtain a suitable pregnant leach solution (PLS) (i.e., in the range of 3 to 8 g/L of Cu) for treatment in available copper solvent extraction (SX) plants with a cost of less than 4.5 USD/t Cu, according to the economic analysis carried out. The results of this study determine the most effective operational conditions for leaching and ensure a suitable PLS for SX plants in a cost-effective and environmentally friendly manner. This work highlights the novel approach of incorporating potassium iodide (KI) doping during the synthesis of In0.53P0.47 core quantum dots (QDs) to significantly reduce the concentration of vacancies (i.e., In vacancies; VIn−) within the bulk of the core QD and inhibit the formation of InPOx at the core QD–Zn0.6Se0.4 shell interfaces. The photoluminescence quantum yield (PLQY) of ~97% and full width at half maximum (FWHM) of ~40 nm were achieved for In0.53P0.47/Zn0.6Se0.4/Zn0.6Se0.1S0.3/Zn0.5S0.5 core/multi-shell QDs emitting red light, which is essential for a quantum-dot organic light-emitting diode (QD-OLED) without red, green, and blue crosstalk. KI doping eliminated VIn− in the core QD bulk by forming K+-VIn− substitutes and effectively inhibited the formation of InPO4(H2O)2 at the core QD–Zn0.6Se0.4 shell interface through the passivation of phosphorus (P)-dangling bonds by P-I bonds. The elimination of vacancies in the core QD bulk was evidenced by the decreased relative intensity of non-radiative unpaired electrons, measured by electron spin resonance (ESR). Additionally, the inhibition of InPO4(H2O)2 formation at the core QD and shell interface was confirmed by the absence of the {210} X-ray diffraction (XRD) peak intensity for the core/multi-shell QDs. By finely tuning the doping concentration, the optimal level was achieved, ensuring maximum K-VIn− substitution, minimal K+ and I− interstitials, and maximum P-dangling bond passivation. This resulted in the smallest core QD diameter distribution and maximized optical properties. Consequently, the maximum PLQY (~97%) and minimum FWHM (~40 nm) were observed at 3% KI doping. Furthermore, the color gamut of a QD-OLED display using R-, G-, and B-QD functional color filters (i.e., ~131.1%@NTSC and ~98.2@Rec.2020) provided a nearly perfect color representation, where red-light-emitting KI-doped QDs were applied. Despite the central role of cats in the transmission and amplification of Sporothrix, studies regarding immune response in feline sporotrichosis are scarce. In cats with sporotrichosis, neutrophil-rich lesions are usually associated to good general condition and lower fungal burden. However, the role of neutrophils in anti-Sporothrix immunity has been little explored in cats. Thus, the aim of this study was to evaluate the neutrophil oxidative burst in the blood of cats with sporotrichosis. Cats with sporotrichosis included in the study were treated with itraconazole (ITZ) alone or combined with potassium iodide (KI). The neutrophil oxidative burst was evaluated through a flow-cytometry-based assay using dihydrorhodamine 123 (background) and stimulation with Zymosan and heat-killed Sporothrix yeasts. The cure rate was 50.0% in cats under treatment with ITZ monotherapy and 90.9% in cats treated with ITZ + KI (p = 0.014), endorsing the combination therapy as an excellent alternative for the treatment of feline sporotrichosis. Higher percentages of Sporothrix-stimulated neutrophils were associated with good general condition (p = 0.003). Higher percentages of Sporothrix- (p = 0.05) and Zymosan-activated (p = 0.014) neutrophils before and early in the treatment were related to clinical cure in ITZ-treated cats. The correlation between oxidative burst and successful use of KI could not be properly assessed given the low number of failures (n = 2) in this treatment group. Nasal mucosa involvement, typically linked to treatment failure, was related to lower percentages of activated neutrophils in the background at the treatment outcome (p = 0.02). Our results suggest a beneficial role of neutrophils in feline sporotrichosis and a positive correlation between neutrophil activation and the cure process in ITZ-treated cats. Radioimmunoassay (RIA) for C-reactive protein (CRP) is a clinical tool to quantify CRP, a cardiovascular diseases (CVDs) marker, in human serum. Development of the Radioimmunoassay includes radioiodination of CRP with 125I radioisotope, where radioiodination is conducted following the Chloramine-T method. The present study standardizes the radiolabeling procedure and key reagent concentrations like chloramine-T (oxidizing reagent), sodium metabisulfite, and potassium iodide. The outcome of the standardized radioiodination includes a reaction time of 60 s, iodination analytical parameters like % Radiochemical purity was ~ 97% with specific activity ~ 17 µCi/µg, and the tracer was stable for the 60 days. The optimized radioiodination method is simple, reproducible, and has high tracer stability with high immunoreactivity to develop an RIA procedure to quantify CRP in human serum. Artificial photosynthesis using carbon nitride (g-C3N4) holds a great promise for sustainable and cost-effective H2O2 production, but the high carrier recombination rate impedes its efficiency. To tackle this challenge, we propose an innovative method involving multispecies iodine mediators (I−/I3−) intercalation through a pre-photo-oxidation process using potassium iodide (suspected deteriorated "KI") within the g-C3N4 framework. Moreover, we introduce an external electric field by incorporating cationic methyl viologen ions to establish an auxiliary electron transfer channel. Such a unique design drastically improves the separation of photo-generated carriers, achieving an impressive H2O2 production rate of 46.40 mmol g−1 h−1 under visible light irradiation, surpassing the most visible-light H2O2-producing systems. Combining various advanced characterization techniques elucidates the inner photocatalytic mechanism, and the application potential of this photocatalytic system is validated with various simulation scenarios. This work presents a significative strategy for preparing and applying highly efficient g-C3N4-based catalysts in photochemical H2O2 production. H2O2 photosynthesis using g-C3N4 is considered an alternative to anthraquinone processes. Inspired by the optical instability of potassium iodide, the I− /I3− internal redox mediator and external electric field are integrated into the g-C3N4, achieving satisfactory H2O2 production. A series of advantages led to their rapid promotion and application, such as high efficiency, low toxicity, and no cross resistance with traditional insecticides. Develop the synthesis route with warm reaction conditions and high yield to achieve the industrial production of Broflanilide by better route which is the focus of current pesticide workers. Based on the literature research results and the classic organic reactions, the synthesis route for Broflanilide were designed. Through a series of experiments, it is found that the target product can be gently and efficiently (38%) harvested under the catalysis of conventional inorganic salt potassium iodide (KI) by regulating the substitution order of functional groups and controlling the effect of steric hindrance on reactivity, which avoids the use of harsh conditions such as strong alkali low temperature or high boiling point solvent. In pediatric and operative dentistry, caries treatment benefits from a therapeutic option based on the use of silver fluoride (AgF) associated with potassium iodide (KI) to avoid dark colorations on dental tissues. The objective of this in vitro study is to evaluate the retention of glass ionomer cement (GIC) on a dentin when treated with AgF and KI. Twenty-two healthy human permanent molars and eight human primary teeth, all free of any decay, were cut to obtain occlusal flat dentinal surfaces and were then treated with AgF for a duration of 60 s. For half of the teeth, a drop of KI was applied for a duration of 30 s. All samples were covered with a plot of GIC and their resistance to shear bond strength was measured. The fracture resistance in both permanent and primary teeth does not show any statistically significant differences whether KI was applied or not. For permanent teeth, the resistance is slightly higher in the group treated with KI than in the group treated with AgF alone. To our knowledge, these data are the first to describe the possible application of KI both on primary and permanent teeth. In any case, further studies are needed to investigate the bond strength between dentin and GIC on a wider range of samples. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

A novel and efficient approach for the synthesis of α, β‐unsaturated sulfones through heterogeneous photocatalyzed C−S coupling reactions have been developed. The use of molten‐salt method derived carbon nitride (MCN), a transition metal‐free polymeric photocatalyst, combined with enhanced crystallinity and potassium iodide as an additive, effectively modulates photogenerated reactive redox species, markedly increasing the overall reaction selectivity. This method achieves the shortest reaction time (2 h) with high yield (up to 95 %) among the reported heterogeneous catalytic C−S bond formation reactions, matching the efficiency of the homogeneous photocatalysts. Furthermore, the application to challenging alkyne substrates has been demonstrated, underscoring the potential for a broad range of applications in pharmaceutical research and synthetic chemistry. To evaluate the effects of an ammonia-based and a water-based silver-containing solutions on bonding performance and matrix-metalloproteinases (MMPs) activity of a universal adhesive to dentin after 1 year of artificial aging. Mid-coronal dentin surfaces of 60 sound human molars were exposed and the following groups were formed according to the surface pre-treatment and etching mode of the universal adhesive (Zipbond Universal, SDI) (n = 10): G1) Zipbond in the self-etch mode (ZSE); G2) Riva Star (SDI) applied before ZSE; G3) Riva Star Aqua (SDI) applied before ZSE; G4) Zipbond in the etch-and-rinse mode (ZER); G5) Riva Star applied before ZER; G6) Riva Star Aqua applied before ZER. The specimens were sectioned and subjected to microtensile bond strength (µTBS) test at baseline (T 0) and after 12 months (T 12) of artificial storage. Scanning electron microscope (SEM) and energy dispersive spectroscopy analysis (EDS) were also conducted. Three additional molars per group were processed for the in situ zymography analysis at T 0 and T 12. Data were statistically analyzed (p < 0.05). Dentin pre-treatments and aging decreased bonding values, regardless of the etching mode (p < 0.05). No differences in µTBS were observed between the two silver-containing solutions, both at T 0 and T 12. Riva Star Aqua and etching significantly increased the MMPs activity, independent of the storage period (p < 0.05). Dentin surface pre-treatment with silver-containing solutions negatively affects the bonding performances of resin composite restorations placed with a universal adhesive. This study aimed to evaluate the efficacy of diverse herbal teat dipping agents on milk pH and bacterial counts (Staphylococcus, Streptococcus and E. coli), alongside teat condition scoring in 28 days involving 25 lactating HF crossbred cows, aged 6 to 8 years. The cows were housed in a loose housing system and categorized into five groups: T1 (Control - water), T2 (1% potassium iodide), T3 (Aloe vera gel), T4 (turmeric paste) and T5 (neem oil), each comprising five cows. The cow' milk pH, initially averaging 6.46, remained within the acceptable range (6.5-6.7) post-dipping with herbal agents. Aloe vera treatment showed the most significant pH improvement. Bacterial counts did not significantly differ on day 7. Still, by day 28, Staphylococcus counts were significantly lower in neem oil-dipped cows and E. coli counts were lower in all treated groups compared to the control. Teat condition scoring indicated that Aloe vera and potassium iodide positively affected teat skin condition, while neem oil and turmeric paste improved it without significant differences. Teat orifice condition scores remained consistent across groups. The study suggests these herbal agents can be safely used as teat dips without adversely affecting milk pH or teat condition. IntroductionThe co-existence of S. mutans and C. albicans is frequently detected in root caries and early child caries and is reported to be associated with recurrent caries. The aim of this study was to investigate the effects of potassium iodide (KI) in combination with toluidine blue O-mediated antimicrobial photodynamic therapy (aPDT) on S. mutans and C. albicans mixed-species biofilm, as well as the antibiofilm mechanisms involved.MethodsMixed-species biofilm was constructed of S. mutans and C. albicans on dentin blocks. The antibiofilm efficacy, cytotoxicity and antibiofilm mechanism of KI in combination with aPDT were determined and evaluated.ResultsKI+TBO-aPDT treatment caused reduction in microorganism counts, metabolic activity, and biofilm biomass of mixed-species biofilm without inducing cytotoxicity to hDPCs (human dental pulp cells). Observations such increased ROS (reactive oxygen species) levels, impaired cell membrane function, cell apoptosis and reduced expression in several genes seem to be artifacts of reduced growth and general killing by KI+TBO-aPDT treatment.DiscussionThese data suggested that KI in combination with aPDT as an innovative approach to combat S. mutans and C. albicans biofilm, and thus as an optional treatment for caries.

Background: Chromoblastomycosis (CMB) is a chronic granulomatous fungal infection that affect the skin and subcutaneous tissues. It is clinically problematic due to limited treatment options, low cure rates, and high rates of relapse. This underscores the necessity for innovative treatment approaches. In this study, potassium iodide (KI) combined with Methylene Blue (MB) mediated antimicrobial photodynamic therapy (PDT) were assessed in the treatment of Fonsecaea monophora (F. monophora) both in vitro and in vivo. And the underlying mechanism that contributes to the efficacy of this treatment approach was investigated. Methods: In vitro experiments were conducted using different combinations and concentrations of MB, KI, and 660 nm light (60 mW/cm2) to inhibit F. monophora. The study was carried out using colony-forming unit (CFU) counts and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The production of singlet oxygen (1O2), free iodine (I2), hydrogen peroxide (H2O2), and superoxide anion during the KI combined MB-mediated antimicrobial PDT process was also detected. In vivo experiments were developed using a Balb/c mouse paw infection model with F. monophora and treated with PBS, 10 mM KI, 2 mM MB +100 J/cm² and 10 mM KI+2 mM MB +100 J/cm² respectively. Inflammatory swelling, fungal load and histopathological analyses of the mouse footpads were assessed. Results: KI enhanced the killing effect of MB-mediated antimicrobial PDT on the conidial spores of F. monophora at the cell and infected animal model level. During the process, the main antimicrobial agents in KI combined with MB- mediated antimicrobial PDT could produce stronger toxic active species including free I2 and H2O2. Conclusion: KI combined with MB-mediated antimicrobial PDT could be an effective adjunct therapy for treating CBM.

Background: Intake of potassium iodide (KI) reduces the accumulation of radioactive iodine in the thyroid gland in the event of possible contamination by radioactive iodine released from a nuclear facility. The World Health Organization (WHO) has stated the need for research for optimal timing, appropriate dosing regimen, and safety for repetitive iodine thyroid blocking (ITB). The French PRIODAC project, addressed all these issues, involving prolonged or repeated releases of radioactive iodine. Preclinical studies established an effective dose through pharmacokinetic modeling, demonstrating the safety of repetitive KI treatment without toxicity. Summary: Recent preclinical studies have determined an optimal effective dose for repetitive administration, associated with pharmacokinetic modeling. The results show the safety and absence of toxicity of repetitive treatment with KI. Good laboratory practice level preclinical studies corresponding to individuals >12 years have shown a safety margin established between animal doses without toxic effect. After approval from the French health authorities, the market authorization of the two tablets of KI, 65 mg/day, was defined with a new dosing scheme of a daily repetitive intake of the treatment up to 7 days unless otherwise instructed by the competent authorities for all categories of population except pregnant women and children under the age of 12 years. Conclusion: This new marketed authorization resulting from scientific-based evidence obtained as part of the PRIODAC project may serve as an example to further harmonize the application of KI for repetitive ITB in situations of prolonged radioactive release at the European and international levels, under the umbrella of the WHO.

Background Erythrosine+potassium iodide-mediated photodynamic therapy has shown an anticandidal effect. In this study, a fast and simple method has been developed for the determination of nitrite in different aqueous samples. The method, which can be applied for on-site as well as off-site analyses, is based on the reaction of nitrite with potassium iodide in an acid medium to liberate triiodide ions. These liberated triiodide ions react with starch adhesive to form a dark blue complex, which is quantified by digital imaging using an ordinary smartphone and a freely available mobile application. Image analysis was done in the RGB color space, and the B-channel values were used to obtain the analytical signal. Under the optimum conditions, the method showed a linear range of 0.05–1 mg/L and a detection limit of 0.013 mg/L. The relative standard deviation for the determination of 0.5 mg/L nitrite was found to be 2.2% (n = 6). The results obtained using the proposed method were evaluated by comparing them to those obtained by a commercial UV-Vis spectrophotometer and also by analyzing spiked samples to calculate recovery percentages. To develop an environmentally acceptable corrosion inhibitor Rosa damascene extract (RD) served as the main ingredient in H2SO4 pickling processes. X‐ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), Fourier‐transform infrared spectroscopy (FT‐IR), technique of electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS), polarization (PP) curves, and tests of weight loss (WL) have all been utilized to examine the inhibitory behavior of Rosa damascene on C‐steel corrosion in 1 M H2SO4 environment. The results show that the extract effectively inhibited the Zn′ corrosion in 1 M H2SO4. The inhibition was more effective at higher concentrations and temperatures. The inhibitory efficiency increased to 93.5% at a higher applied temperature (45°C) and higher Rosa damascene concentration (300 ppm). However, utilizing the weight loss method at potassium iodide addition, the inhibitory effectiveness of 300 ppm of Rosa damascene was synergistically increased from 75.0% to 96.1% at 25°C. Temkin isotherm was congruent with the adsorption process that produced the inhibitory impact on the C‐steel. The chemical adhesion of the Rosa damascene extract to the surface of the C‐steel was determined by the free energy of adsorption (ΔGoads = 40.5 kJ/mol.). In search of new possible uses of cheap lignite from the Kosova Bassin, the surface of lignite powders is modified with alkyl or mixed alkyl‐aryl layers. Modification is performed in aqueous acid solution containing an aryl diazonium salt and an alkyl halide compound in millimolar concentration, in the presence of potassium iodide as a reducing agent at equimolar concentration. Attachment of alkyl films substituted with carboxylic groups and aryl films with nitro or bis‐trifluoromethyl groups is characterized by IRATR and XPS spectroscopy. The formation of a stable interface during the grafting reactions of alkyl and aryl moieties with lignite surface has been confirmed by theoretical calculations. Aryl diazonium salts once chemically or spontaneously reduced are a source of aryl radicals, able to attach chemically to the material surface or to react with alkyl halides by abstracting the halogen atom. If the aryl diazonium salts are unable to graft to the coal surface due to steric hindrance, they can, nevertheless, abstract an iodine or bromine atom to generate alkyl radicals that react with the material surface. Developing a green and efficient method for synthesizing vinyl sulfones is challenging and highly desirable. We herein report a green, sustainable, and unprecedented mechanochemical-assisted approach for the decarboxylative sulfonylation of α,β-unsaturated carboxylic acids with sodium sulfinates using only potassium iodide (50 mol%) as an activator under water-assisted grinding conditions. A library of alkyl and aryl vinyl sulfone derivatives were synthesized successfully in up to 92% yield with excellent functional group compatibility in a short reaction time. This sulfonylation strategy is well tolerated by aryl α,β-unsaturated carboxylic acids and alkyl and aryl sodium sulfinate salts. The method has been successfully applied to the synthesis of neuroprotective agents. Overall, the advantages of this strategy are (i) metal catalyst-, base-, oxidant-, and solvent-free conditions, (ii) operational simplicity with a short reaction time, and (iii) excellent effective mass yield, atom economy, E-factor, and EcoScale score. Purpose: To examine whether adherence to a low-iodine diet (LID) enhances the therapeutic efficacy of radioiodine therapy (RAI) in Graves' hyperthyroidism (GH) in iodine-rich areas. Methods: We retrospectively evaluated 185 patients with GH from Aichi (n = 114) and Hokkaido (n = 71) Prefectures. Patients aged ≥ 18 years with GH who underwent RAI between December 2012 and March 2022 were divided into subgroups based on pretreatment with anti-thyroid drug (ATD) or potassium iodide (KI). Patients were followed up with LID from 18 days (group A) or 7 days (group H) before RAI to 3 days after RAI. The dose of radioactive iodine 131 (131I) was adjusted to deliver > 100 Gy to the thyroid. The associations between urinary iodine concentration on UIC2 vs. 24hRU and UIC2 vs. the 1-year RAI success rate (SR) were investigated. Results: Compared with UIC1, UIC2 was significantly decreased in all subgroups (P < 0.01). An inverse correlation between UIC2 and 24hRU was observed in the four groups; however, the difference was insignificant. The SR in groups A and H was 85% and 89%, respectively. Univariate analysis revealed no association between UIC2 and SR in each group. Additionally, stratification of the 185 patients into quartiles using UIC2 yielded no significant differences in SR (p = 0.79). Conclusions: LID sufficiently reduced UIC in patients undergoing RAI. Although a lower UIC2 may increase 24hRU, it did not increase the success of RAI. The benefit of LID in enhancing the efficacy of RAI in GH treatment remains uncertain. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The clinical findings associated with nasal, cutaneous and systemic fusariosis in a 3‐year‐old billy Boer goat are summarised. The clinical features, treatment, postmortem findings and laboratory diagnostics are reported and discussed in the context of existing knowledge on mycoses of small ruminants. The goat presented primarily for respiratory signs (inspiratory dyspnoea) with unilateral left‐sided mucopurulent nasal discharge, and multifocal variably ulcerative and necrotic cutaneous nodules. Histopathology of nasal and cutaneous biopsies revealed necrotising pyogranulomatous inflammation with intralesional septate hyphal elements that correlated with culture of Fusarium oxysporum. The patient continued to deteriorate clinically during treatment with oxytetracycline and meloxicam, with the addition of sodium iodide and potassium iodide, and was humanely euthanased. Postmortem examination revealed multifocal nodular lesions throughout the kidneys, abdominal lymph nodes and lungs. These lesions were consistent with those identified antemortem from which F. oxysporum was cultured. Although treatment was unsuccessful, to the author's knowledge, no instance of rhinofacial or systemic caprine infection with Fusarium spp. has been documented in the veterinary literature, making this the first recognised instance of this form of infection in small ruminant species. In this work, molecular dynamic (MD) simulations are applied to investigate the heterogeneous nucleation mechanism of KI on a graphene surface in water. As graphene is immersed in water, it mainly affects the structure of interfacial water (the topmost water layer at the interface between the substance and water). To maximize the hydrogen bonding of water, the dissolved solutes tend to accumulate to form the aggregate at the graphene surface, which undoubtedly affects the nucleation pathways of solutes in water. In comparison with homogeneous nucleation, a lower barrier may be expected during the heterogeneous nucleation of KI on a graphene surface in water. Therefore, as the graphene is immersed in water, this facilitates solute nucleation. Antimicrobial photodynamic therapy (aPDT) can be a viable option for management of intranasal infections. However, there are light delivery, fluence, and photosensitizer-related challenges. We report in vitro effectiveness of an easily fabricated, low-cost, portable, LED device and a formulation comprising methylene blue (MB) and potassium iodide (KI) for photoinactivation of pathogens of the nasal cavity, namely, methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus, antibiotic-resistant Klebsiella pneumoniae, multi-antibiotic-resistant Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Candida spp., and SARS-CoV-2. In a 96-well plate, microbial suspensions incubated with 0.005% MB alone or MB and KI formulation were exposed to different red light (~ 660 ± 25 nm) fluence using the LED device fitted to each well. Survival loss in bacteria and fungi was quantified using colony-forming unit assay, and SARS-CoV-2 photodamage was assessed by RT-PCR. The results suggest that KI addition to MB leads to KI concentration-dependent potentiation (up to ~ 5 log10) of photoinactivation in bacteria and fungi. aPDT in the presence of 25 or 50 mM KI shows the following photoinactivation trend; Gm + ve bacteria > Gm − ve bacteria > fungi > virus. aPDT in the presence of 100 mM KI, using 3- or 5-min red light exposure, results in complete eradication of bacteria or fungi, respectively. For SARS-CoV-2, aPDT using MB-KI leads to a ~ 6.5 increase in cycle threshold value. The results demonstrate the photoinactivation effectiveness of the device and MB-KI formulation, which may be helpful in designing of an optimized protocol for future intranasal photoinactivation studies in clinical settings. Feline sporotrichosis is an endemic disease with high occurrence in Brazil. Itraconazole (ITZ) remains the drug of choice for treating this disease in cats, despite the increasing reports of therapeutic failure. A controlled, randomized clinical trial was performed on 166 naive cats with sporotrichosis to assess the effectiveness and safety of the combination therapy with ITZ and potassium iodide (KI) compared with ITZ monotherapy. Cats were randomly allocated into two treatment groups: G1—ITZ 100 mg/cat/day—and G2—ITZ 100 mg/cat/day + KI 2.5–20 mg/kg/day. Cats treated in G2 presented 77% more risk of reaching a clinical cure (a positive effect) than those treated in G1, even when controlled by negative predictors. The survival curves of the two treatment protocols indicate that a clinical cure was achieved faster in G2. An increase in the KI dose was necessary in 28 cats due to the persistence of clinical signs. Adverse reactions were equally frequent in both groups and manageable with a temporary drug suspension and/or a hepatoprotective therapy. The combination therapy was associated with a higher cure rate and a shorter treatment time, suggesting that ITZ+KI arises as a better option for treating feline sporotrichosis and should be considered the first-line treatment, especially in the presence of negative predictors. A high‐conducting salt‐doped polymer electrolyte layer has been created here for use in photocell technologies. The solution casting method is used to produce ion conducting film where poly (methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) is used as the host polymer and potassium iodide (KI) as the dopant. The conductivity and amorphic increases of the polymer electrolytes with the addition of salt concentrations helps in the enhancement of the charge transfer properties. Using electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS), ionic conductivity is evaluated where maximum conductivity is 3.99 × 10−6 S cm‐1 at 20 wt% KI concentration. Polarized optical microscopy (POM) shows the reduction in crystallinity by salt doping, while Fourier transforms infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) shows the complexation as well as composite nature of the film. Introduction: Silver diamine fluoride (SDF) is a topical treatment for carious lesions and a primary preventative for newly exposed high-risk surfaces such as fissures and roots in the first molars. Using potassium iodide (KI) after applying SDF has been recommended as a way of reducing the severity of black staining, as well as preserving its antibacterial effect useful in deep caries. Objective: The objective of this research was to compare the antibacterial effect of SDF, with and without KI, on Streptococcus mutans (S. mutans) and dental biofilm. Methods: The antibacterial effects of SDF, KI, and the combination of both were measured using three different techniques (inhibition halo, minimum inhibitory effect [MIE], and colony-forming unit [CFU], testing). Results: The results were then subjected to statistical analysis. Analyzed by means of the Kruskal–Wallis statistical test, the inhibition halos yielded a value of P = 0.3309. Using the MIE test, only the SDF treatment produced an antibacterial effect, at 10%, compared to the KI group, with P = 0.001. Finally, the CFU test revealed a total absence of colonies for all three reagents. All three substances analyzed achieved total inhibition of S. mutans. SDF is effective even in its minimal commercial concentration. Its antibacterial capacity decreases with the addition of KI. Conclusions: The three substances analyzed at their maximum concentrations exhibited an antibacterial effect against S. mutans, resulting in total inhibition.

Applying a saturated potassium iodide (KI) solution immediately after silver diamine fluoride (SDF) application may affect the inhibitory effects of SDF on biofilm formation. This study compared the efficacy of 38% SDF with and without KI on preventing mixed-species biofilm formation on human root dentin surfaces and assessed ion incorporation into root dentin. The biofilms, composed of Streptococcus mutans, Lactobacillus rhamnosus, and Actinomyces naeslundii, were grown on specimen surfaces treated with either SDF or SDF + KI. After 24 h, the biofilms were evaluated using scanning electron microscopy, live/dead staining, adenosine triphosphate (ATP) assays, colony-forming unit (CFU) counts, and quantitative polymerase chain reaction. A Mann–Whitney U test was used to compare the results between the groups. Ion incorporation was assessed using an electron probe microanalyzer. The relative ATP content in the SDF + KI group was significantly higher than that in the SDF group (p < 0.05). However, biofilm morphology and the logarithmic reduction in CFUs and bacterial DNA were comparable across the groups. The SDF + KI treatment resulted in less silver and fluoride ion incorporation than that yielded by SDF alone. The inhibitory effects of SDF and SDF + KI on mixed-species biofilm formation were almost equivalent, although KI application affected the ion incorporation.
