The 33 publications included in this annotated bibliography are intended to serve as a basic list for a small, but authoritative and balanced library. The materials included run from 1963 to 1970, and in addition to the books, a few appropriate periodicals are included. Selections were made on the basis that junior and senior high school teachers, and vocational counselors would be the users. The selections include current and historical information, statistical data, problem identification, and analysis. It should be useful in explaining the major dimensions of the work system, and the broader economic and social world to students. A list of 11 selected sources of free and inexpensive materials is also included. (Author/SLD)

The Manpower and Economic Education Program (MEE) is an occupational orientation course at the secondary level. Experiences in implementing MEE are discussed. The strategy used involves doing everything possible to promote programs that help youngsters prepare for effective participation in the manpower market. School districts are encouraged to develop occupational orientation programs. The three key words in this strategy are communicate, cooperate, and coordinate. It must include a delivery system providing results similar to those indicated in promotional activities. Schools must be provided with a complete package of materials and services, including, text, teaching manual, evaluation instruments, personnel, etc. Television lessons have also been developed. Training the personnel is one of the most valuable services provided. Included with the speech is a handout summary of 82 lessons learned in implementing MEE, including categories for innovators, teachers, administrators, materials, students, and the community. Included is a list briefly describing some of the 75 television programs that are utilized. (SLD)

This publication provides an introduction to manpower education and presents a summary report on a 2-year res"arch and curriculum development project for manpower and economic education at the junior high school level. The introduction includes "The Meaning of Manpower Education" and "Major Themes for A Manpower Education Course" which outlines and illustrates 78 important concepts in the course. Objectives of the project were to identify content and placement level, to develop materials and field test them, and to disseminate the results. A text, a teacher manual, and tests of knowledge and attitude changes were developed and tested. The text and manual titled "Manpower and Economic Education" are available from the Interstate Printers and Publishers for $3.50 and $1.50 respectively. Evaluation results indicated a knowledge gain of 39.6 percent for the experimental group and 6.2 percent for the control group and attitude changes on 21 out of 62 items for the experimental group while the control group only changed 11 items. This eighth, ninth, or tenth grade year-long economic education course is written from the viewpoint of the individual as a worker/income-earner. Its primary purpose is to provide the schools with a means for improving the preparation of young people for effective participation in the changing economy. The educational objectives are: 1) to develop an understanding of the economic process and the role of work; and, 2) to explain how students can enhance their future employability, productivity, earnings, and work satisfaction by investing in the development of their own knowledge, skills, motivation, and behavior patterns. The course consists of 75 separate lessons averaging four pages in length. Each lesson begins with an abstract outlining the central topic or concept to be studied, followed by the main text with questions to be answered in writing or in class discussion. In addition, statistical charts and tables are provided to enable the student to test assertions or conclusions against empirical facts. A summary paragraph racapitulates and emphasizes the most essential understandings the students should have learned. These instructional materials were tested in eight Ohio schools during the fall semester of the 1967-68 school year. (Author/AWW)
