Abstract

A pervasive trend in economic development is the shift from agricultural to manufacturing and finally to service economies. Because the type of employment associated with each sector influences natural resource use this global trend may manifest itself in predictable land use transitions. We relate these to changes in urban, agricultural, and natural lands. We find that the economic transition is common in most counties and across counties. Agricultural land expands to natural areas but is eventually replaced by urban. Relating sectors to land cover, we see a strong relationship between increases in service employment and the growth of urban areas. However, we find that both large agricultural areas and large natural areas also occur with high service employment. Finally, we test if the 100th Meridian is associated with predictable relationships between land cover and economic sectors and find strong results that suggest different development patterns in the East and West., Comment: 9 pages, 4 figures, 2 tables

Abstract

Previous research has identified a predictive model of how a nation's distribution of gross domestic product (GDP) among agriculture (a), industry (i), and services (s) changes as a country develops. Here we use this national model to analyze the composition of GDP for US Metropolitan Statistical Areas (MSA) over time. To characterize the transfer of GDP shares between the sectors in the course of economic development we explore a simple system of differential equations proposed in the country-level model. Fitting the model to more than 120 MSAs we find that according to the obtained parameters MSAs can be classified into 6 groups (consecutive, high industry, re-industrializing; each of them also with reversed development direction). The consecutive transfer (a → i → s) is common but does not represent all MSAs examined. At the 95% confidence level, 40% of MSAs belong to types exhibiting an increasing share of GDP from agriculture. In California, such MSAs, which we classify as part of an agriculture renaissance, are found in the Central Valley.

Abstract

Biogas plays a significant part in replacing solid biomass and fossil fuels for cooking. However, the implementation of appropriate policies to promote the development of biogas plants is hindered by a lack of adequate assessment of the biogas potential in Nepal. Thus, we estimate the potential of biogas production at the district level of Nepal from available waste biomass, including livestock manure, agricultural residues, and organic fraction of municipal solid waste (OFMSW). Our estimates show the theoretical potential of biogas production from livestock manure of 1890 million m3 year−1, agricultural residues of 2290 million m3 year−1, and OFMSW of 234 million m3 year−1. The total biogas production is 4412 million m3 year−1, equivalent to 153 million liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) cylinders yearly. Using this biogas potential to replace LPG and solid biomass for cooking could result in avoided CO2, CO, and PM2.5 emissions of 6.3 million tons year−1, 0.4 million tons year−1, and 0.04 million tons year−1, respectively. Our findings suggest that the Terai districts of Morang, Sunsari, Saptari, and Banke, as well as the Hilly districts of Kavrepalanchok, Dhading, and Nuwakot, have a significant amount of biogas‐producing potential. Utilising this potential could also contribute to achieving several Sustainable Development Goals and a clean cooking energy transition in Nepal. Abstract

This chapter provides empirical case studies of two Himalayan towns of Nepal – Dhulikhel and Diktel, focusing on equity and justice in (drinking) water governance, which impacted water security. We investigate the differential impacts of climate change on different local social groups and their ongoing responses to the impacts taking the case of water governance and water security. The findings of the study clearly revealed that climate change and its associated impacts on the lives of people have further exacerbated the existing inequalities among the social groups – the access to drinking water for the marginalized social groups further declined because of drying of water sources and other disasters affecting the availability of water. Based on these empirical facts, this chapter highlights the need to develop an interdisciplinary approach to advance a research and policy agenda on climate justice and disaster risk management (with valuable insights from elsewhere). We conclude that a climate justice framework is needed in the context of Nepal that considers distributional, capabilities, procedural, and recognition issues and aspects of vulnerability, resilience, and adaptive capacity. Based on the findings of the study, we also complicate the current debate around climate justice in Nepal, and how can they be applied in research and development interventions related to climate change (for adaptation) and disasters. This would help to understand which dimension of climate justice gets priority and more traction in Nepal than others amid the dynamics of social differences.
