Abstract When analyzing the Free Induction Decay (FID) signal produced by nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy, Fourier transforms (FT) are used to decompose time-domain signals arising from nuclear interactions. This transformation enables the extraction of frequency-domain information, allowing for the recognition of patterns within the generated NMR spectra. Most modern NMR processing software applies FT to generate the final spectra. Researchers process FID using various techniques, such as phase correction, windowing, and FT, to enhance the interpretation of the obtained spectra. This processing step requires careful consideration of the characteristics of the original data and can also be influenced by the researchers' experience, often making it time-consuming to produce reliable results. However, recent advancements in artificial intelligence, particularly deep learning, have demonstrated superior pattern recognition capabilities compared to humans in complex scenarios. These developments have been successfully applied to various aspects of NMR spectroscopy. In this study, we demonstrate that neural networks can replace FT in NMR spectroscopy, enabling robust and rapid prediction of spectra and peak lists from FID signals. Our results confirm that deep learning can efficiently process NMR data to generate final spectra. As a proof of concept, we present the resulting spectra, along with peak lists predicted by supplying only FID input to the deep learning algorithm. The generated peak lists can be considered as spectra with infinite resolution.

Abstract The human norovirus (abbreviated as HuNV) is the most common agent responsible for acute viral gastroenteritis. Despite being recognized as a water-borne pathogenic virus for a long time, the cellular tropism of norovirus has not yet been clearly explained. The main reason is the lack of appropriate cell culture and animal model systems for HuNV infection. Murine norovirus (abbreviated as MNV) is often used as a proxy for human norovirus when trying to understand the expression profiles left behind by norovirus infection in a host. In the current study, the host response to MNV was examined using the macrophage Raw 264.7 in terms of the altered host proteomes. After MNV infection, host Raw 264.7 cell lysates were collected for proteome profiling at the time points of 0.5 hpi (early phase, control), 16 hpi (mid-phase), and 24 hpi (late phase). LC–MS analysis was employed for label-free shotgun proteomics on the host cell proteomes. The progression of MNV infection status was monitored using an immunofluorescence-conjugated noroviral capsid protein VP1 and a confocal microscope. The up-regulation of Ras GTPases such Rab5A and Rab6A was found to be implicated in norovirus gastroenteritis, as revealed by proteomic profiling. Consequently, the recognition of Ras-related proteins can lead to a better understanding of how noroviral infection affects the immune system of the host cell.

Abstract Development of rapid and simple detection method holds great significance for the prevention and control of Staphylococcus aureus. Herein, the SELEX method was utilized to screen new aptamers for S. aureus. The double aptamers combined recognition target strategy were adopted to enhance specificity, and magnetic bead target enrichment and the rolling circle amplification strategy were employed to improve sensitivity, thereby achieving a highly specific and highly sensitive visual detection of S. aureus. This method can specifically identify S. aureus and has high detection sensitivity, with a minimum detection limit of 10 CFU/mL. It also shows good repeatability, with a total time consumption of less than 9 h and can be used for the visual detection of actual samples.

Abstract In the late Anatolian Seljuk period (1243–1308), architectural design took on new symbolic significance, focusing on grandeur and ornamentation as a response to the shifting political landscape. One of the critical features of this era is the transformation seen in the geometric layouts of some muqarnas designs, exemplified explicitly in Konya Sahip Ata mosque muqarnas (1258). While the arrangements may appear irregular at first glance, closer analysis reveals that they are structured according to a dodecagonal system. This study focuses on the geometric layouts in the plan projections of Sahip Ata mosque muqarnas, showing that dodecagrams were used to organize these complex patterns, reflecting an advanced and deliberate approach to design during this transitional period.

Abstract Fungi have an essential role in deterioration of historical leather bindings, leading to major problems in the preservative state of these artifacts. This study aims to evaluate the efficiency of some fungicides and nanoparticles materials against fungal activity of historical leather bindings. Historical leather binding from an illuminated paper manuscript dating back to the Mamluk period (1250–1516 AD) at the Al-Azhar library, Cairo, Egypt was examined for fungal infection, and isolation. Results of the present study showed, 21 fungal isolates were isolated and identified using morphological and molecular techniques as Alternaria alternate (5%), Aspergillus fumigatus (43%), Aspergillus niger (43%), Aspergillus terrus (5%), and Penicillium chrysogenum (5%). All fungal isolates exhibited proteolytic activity. Aspergillus niger (2–7) and Aspergillus fumigatus (3–4) achieved the highest proteolytic activity amongst obtained fungal strains. Seven fungicides, difenoconazole, propiconazole, azoxystrobin, pyraclostrobin, boscalid, dimethomorph, and thiophanate-methyl as individual active ingredient and two mixtures [difenoconazole combined with propiconazole (1:1)] and [boscalid combined with pyraclostrobin (2:1)] were evaluated at different concentrations against A. fumigatus and A. niger. Additionally, the effect of titanium and silicon dioxides nanoparticles, against the highest proteolytic fungi A. fumigatus and A. niger was evaluated. The fungal growth inhibition was assessed by the disc diffusion method (DDM). The results revealed that individual or mixed boscalid and pyraclostrobin fungicides at 300 ppm achieved the highest inhibition activity against A. fumigatus, but the linear diagram showed that individual boscalid and pyraclostrobin fungicides at 200 ppm was the ideal concentration for application with the leather samples in the future study. The mixture of boscalid + pyraclostrobin (2:1) exhibited the best preservation effect against A. niger achieving 65.9%, and 82.4% microbial inhibition at 150, and 300 ppm, respectively, followed by individual boscalid fungicide.

Abstract Clay sealing represents the key physical example of the document sealing system of the Qin dynasty in ancient China. However, only the inscriptions and aesthetic values of clay sealings have been discussed until now, and the relevant sources have not been traced from the perspective of scientific analysis. A total of 81 clay sealings unearthed in Xi’an were studied via ultra-depth field microscopy, petrographic microstructure analysis and X-ray fluorescence spectroscopy. The relevant methods of tracing and making clay samples are discussed based on the results of the literature investigation and elemental analysis. The composition, technology and spatial links between different clay sealings collected from all over the country show that highly organized sealing materials and systematic processes are important parts of the establishment of unified China. They also provide detailed and effective scientific information that is useful for the future preservation of clay sealings protection and further archaeological research.

Saquinavir is a drug used as an HIV treatment, with recent reports of new uses. It has poor aqueous solubility and very low oral bioavailability. However, when prepared in a eutectic mixture with the natural bioenhancer, piperine, it demonstrated improvements in these drawbacks. Therefore, considering that EMs can be easily produced and scaled-up, it could potentially be used in new pharmaceutical formulations. For this purpose, an analytical method capable of quantifying SQV in the presence of PIP is required for quality control purposes. In this context, UV–Vis equipment is simpler to use and cheaper than HPLC, and it is commonly available in most laboratories. Therefore, a derivative spectrophotometry method at 245 nm was developed and validated to quantify SQV. The method showed good linearity from 0.5 to 100.0 mg/L, with a limit of detection and limit of quantification of 0.331 mg/L and 0.468 mg/L, respectively. Furthermore, it was precise, accurate, and demonstrated good specificity up to a 1:4.3 SQV:PIP ratio. Consequently, the results demonstrate that the method can be employed for SQV quantification in the presence of PIP as an economical and simple technique. This contribution could be the basis for a quality control technique for these types of products.

We report a workflow and a software description for digital image colorimetry aimed at obtaining a quantitative dose–response curve and the minimal inhibitory concentration in the Resazurin Microtiter Assay (REMA) test of the activity of antimycobacterial drugs. The principle of this analysis is based on the newly established correspondence between the intensity of the a* channel of the CIE L*a*b* colour space and the concentration of resorufin produced in the course of this test. The whole procedure can be carried out using free software. It has sufficiently mild requirements for the quality of colour images, which can be taken by a typical smartphone camera. Thus, the approach does not impose additional costs on the medical examination points and is widely accessible. Its efficiency is verified by applying it to the case of two representatives of substituted 2-(quinolin-4-yl) imidazolines. The direct comparison with the data on the indicator’s fluorescence obtained using a commercial microplate reader argues that the proposed approach provides results of the same range of accuracy on the quantitative level. As a result, it would be possible to apply the strategy not only for new low-cost studies but also for expanding databases on drug candidates by quantitatively reprocessing existing data, which were earlier documented by images of microplates but analysed only qualitatively.

Substituted phenols, including chlorophenols, are important analytes, particularly in the context of environmental analysis. Chlorophenols are formed during the disinfection of drinking water by chlorination and are important water pollutants. Gas chromatography–mass spectrometry (GC-MS) is an important method for the analysis of chlorophenols. Retention indices are used in GC-MS analysis to improve the accuracy of identification. Our research reveals that the retention indices currently available for substituted phenols are erroneous in a number of cases. We report reliable retention index values for pentafluorophenol, 5-methoxy-2-nitrophenol, 4-cyanophenol (stationary phase: 5%-phenyl-polymethylsiloxane), 3-methoxyphenol, 2-chlorophenol, 3-chlorophenol, 4-chlorophenol, 2,3-dichlorophenol, 2,5-dichlorophenol, 2,6-dichlorophenol, 3,4-dichlorophenol, 3,5-dichlorophenol, 2,3,5-trichlorophenol, 2,3,6-trichlorophenol, 2,4,5-trichlorophenol, and 2,4,6-trichlorophenol (stationary phase: polyethylene glycol modified with 2-nitroterephthalic acid). The structures of the standard samples were confirmed, and measurements were performed under various conditions. The analysis of the causes of the incorrect records appearing in the well-known NIST database was also carried out.

Background: A psychological autopsy is a post-mortem investigative tool used to carry out a retrospective reconstruction of a missing subject’s life. The method includes gathering information from all the potentially involved parties, which may indicate the relevant elements directly or indirectly to trace the victim’s experience and identify personality traits, lifestyle, and interpersonal relationships. Discussion: Psychological autopsies are mainly performed during criminal investigations to identify the cause of death and the specific circumstances (natural, accidental, suicidal, or homicidal death). In addition, from an epidemiological point of view, this method aims to collect the relevant information about an individual’s behavior, circumstances, and reasons for their death to identify common risk factors to prevent new suicides. Although less frequently, this tool can also serve other purposes, such as the legal validity estimation of pre-death actions. Moreover, it may be used to assess whether mistakes have been made in treating people undergoing medical or psychological treatment. Conclusions: Currently, this methodology still has a limited diffusion on the Italian and European scenes due to the lack of standardized guidelines and substantial relevant scientific literature. It is the main factor affecting the tool’s reliability, validity, and systematic application in forensic investigations.

Background: Among the deaths recorded during the COVID-19 pandemic, some were caused by clinical manifestations of venous thromboembolic disease, mainly pulmonary embolism. Several litigations were settled worldwide for professional malpractice associated with COVID-19 and anticoagulant therapy management. The authors aimed to discuss, as court-appointed consultants in civil court, a case settled for compensation against a healthcare facility associated with SARS-CoV-2 infection. Case report: We described the case of an old patient in therapy with a direct oral anticoagulant for thrombotic diathesis, hospitalized for COVID-19 pneumonia, who died after two intra-hospital adverse events influencing coagulation imbalance. Discussion: Two health professionals’ malpractice hypotheses were discussed related to the adverse events’ occurrence: one related to the administration of an enema, resulting in rectal perforation, and the other related to proper anticoagulant prophylaxis and comprehensive coagulation imbalance management after the rectal perforation in a patient at high risk of venous thromboembolic disease. Intra-hospital adverse events complicated the hospitalization and then significantly reduced the concrete possibility, even uncertain in terms of time and extent, of the patient’s living longer, representing the damage of reduced possibilities of survival, also called loss-of-chance damage. Conclusions: The case discussed as court advisors, characterized by clinical and legal complexity, together with SARS-CoV-2 infection, underscores the vital role of forensic examiners in cause-of-death ascertainment and as interpreters of statistical-probabilistic data according to naturalistic, logical, and scientific criteria.

Background/Objectives: Rapid DNA instruments are gaining interest in the forensic community as a means of generating DNA profile information more quickly than standard laboratory workflows, and they have the potential to be carried out in decentralized structures of the main laboratory, such as in French overseas territories, where no laboratory facilities are installed. Although this system has been shown to be effective in analyzing rich traces (such as blood) sampled on a swab, it has the disadvantage of consuming the entire swab for analysis. Since it is impossible to double the sampling from very few blood stains, we designed a subsampling protocol of the main swab for analysis on RapidHIT ID® instruments. Methods: Two volumes of blood (10 µL and 150 µL) from four individuals were applied to a regular Copan flocked swab and then subsampled by three different operators using a Copan mini (subungual) flocked swab to recover a portion of the biological material. Results:The analysis of the mini swabs allows us to obtain a complete genetic profile regardless of the initial volume, with a better genetic profile intensity associated with a higher initial volume deposited on the regular swab. Conclusions: Therefore, this study presents a novel, effective, and adaptable subsampling method that has the potential to significantly improve forensic DNA analysis, particularly in remote or decentralized settings. It offers a flexible solution to current limitations of RapidHIT ID® technology and paves the way for future advancements in genetic forensic science.

Background: Over the course of the last decade, cybercrime has become a significant global concern. A comprehensive approach to crimes that occur in cyber contexts needs to address not only the technological aspects of cybercrime but also the human elements. Therefore, the aim of the current research is twofold: first, to gain an in-depth understanding of the pathways that lead to criminal hacking behavior through interviews with current or former criminal hackers, and second, to explore how the lived experiences of these individuals fit within theoretical explanations of hacking. Method: Semi-structured interviews were conducted with a sample of ten current and former criminal hackers. Participants for this study were recruited through social media and hacker forums. Interviews were conducted from November 2023 to March 2024. Data collected during the interviews were analyzed through a process of thematic analysis. Focusing on the lived experiences of these hackers, a “pathway of hacking” behavior, expanding upon those proposed in research emanating from Europe, was identified. Findings: Notably, the current study found that young males who are curious and creative in childhood, experience destabilizing events, and develop an early interest in technology are well placed to follow the pathway to criminal hacking behavior. Online gaming was identified as a possible gateway to criminal hacking activities. A sense of overcoming a challenge, being elite, and having “control over the machine” encourages youth to continue criminal hacking activities. In addition to the identification of a criminal hacking pathway, an integration of existing cyberpsychological, psychological, criminological, and sociological theories is presented to provide a theoretical explanation for the initiation, continuation, and desistence of criminal hacking behavior. This work represents the first effort to present an integration of theories (e.g., Social Learning, General Theory of Crime, Flow, and the cyberpsychological theoretical construct of the “Online Disinhibition Effect”) based on the stages of the criminal hacking pathway.

Background: The identification of victims in mass disasters is a challenging task, particularly when forensic teams must address fragmented human remains. Objectives: This article reports two necropsy cases from the 2019 collapse of the Brumadinho mine tailing dam, the largest humanitarian disaster in Brazilian history. Results: In both cases, identification was achieved through comparative anthropological analysis of complex tattoos. Positive identification was based on the presence of multiple coincident points between postmortem (PM) and antemortem (AM) photographic records of the tattoo designs, along with the absence of exclusionary elements. Conclusion: The authors propose that the comparative analysis of PM and AM tattoos should be more widely adopted as a low-cost, rapid identification method, particularly in complex forensic scenarios such as mass disasters and other challenging cases in the medical and forensic anthropology context.

Nanoparticles are a mainstay of heterogeneous catalysis. This is in part due to their mesoscopic structure; they can be grown to have large available surface areas which can be both regenerative and durable in reaction. Their utility is possible by the alloys used in their production—however, analysis of their operation is generally at the DFT or molecular dynamics level. This review will present an overview of the post-DFT methods relevant to materials supporting the ORR and OER reactions. Pt-bearing alloys will then be highlighted with a focus on their application in heterogeneous catalysis and the ORR/OER reactions. The current computational approaches to accurately predicting the band properties of the alloys will then be discussed and both the fundamental and applied importance of this modelling will be highlighted.

Abstract This study introduces a groundbreaking approach in sports science through the development of silicon nanoparticle-enhanced patches for real-time sweat analysis in athletes. Central to this innovation is the synthesis of silicon nanoparticles (SiNPs) with a 60 nm average diameter, ensuring uniformity and effectiveness in sweat monitoring applications. The patches demonstrate exceptional biocompatibility and robust performance under the demanding conditions of athletic activity. In practical tests, they accurately detected sodium and potassium in sweat, showcasing a linear response with an R 2 value close to 1 for concentration measurements. During on-body trials with athletes, the patches effectively monitored Na+ concentrations ranging from 0.02 to 2.95 mM, demonstrating sensitivity suitable for physiological monitoring. Notably, dermatological tests affirmed a 97% rate of non-reactivity among athletes, highlighting the patches’ safety for extended wear during training sessions. This technology marks a substantial leap in athlete monitoring, offering detailed, real-time insights into physiological states for optimizing training regimens and performance assessment.

Abstract The phytocompounds found in medicinal plants attribute therapeutic values to the plants. However, when medicinal plants undergo different processes, such as crushing, grinding, boiling, and heating, the fate of phytocompounds is unclear. During these processes, phytocompounds may degrade, decompose, or even undergo molecular rearrangement, which results in a decrease or complete loss of therapeutic activity. As a result, the efficacy of a particular dosage may not be attained due to the change in the quantity of phytocompounds present in the final product or formulation. The present study aimed to determine the phytochemical changes that occur during the traditional process of preparation of Ghana from Rauvolfia serpentina roots. Ghana is a solidified preparation by decoction with water. Reserpine being the major bioactive marker in the R. serpentina, it was quantified by utilizing densitometric high-performance thin layer chromatography (HPTLC) and high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) and the qualitative presence of other secondary metabolites was studied by liquid chromatography tandem mass spectrometry (LC–MS/MS). The results showed that the percentage of reserpine quantified by HPTLC method (0.1742% and 0.1569% for roots and ghana, respectively) and HPLC method (0.1731% and 0.1578% for root and ghana, respectively) were almost same, and there were no statistically significant differences between the mean values of reserpine in the root and ghana. The LC–MS/MS study revealed that there were only a very few minor changes in the phytochemical array. The results indicate that the traditional method of preparation can preserve the quantity of reserpine at a prescribed dosage of 0.5 mg/day and can retain other secondary metabolites. Therefore, it may be concluded that the therapeutic efficacies of ghana caused by reserpine and other secondary metabolites are preserved.

Abstract Tamil is the oldest language spoken in Tamil Nadu, India, with inscriptions dating back to the third century BCE found in caves, temples, and archaeological sites. The style and content of these inscriptions have evolved over time, reflecting changes in society, governance, and language usage. They provide valuable insights into rulers, dynasties, administrative systems, religious practices, and societal norms of their era. However, the diverse fonts and styles of these inscriptions necessitate an efficient method for alphabet and word recognition. Existing algorithms primarily recognize Tamil words and characters from the nineteenth century and do not address the language and styles used in the third century. This study proposes a novel DR-LIFT framework specifically designed for recognizing Tamil inscriptions from this earlier period, overcoming the limitations of current methods. The dataset used consists of third-century Tamil inscriptions. The algorithms within the DR-LIFT method specifically designed to detect text with intricate features such as curves, loops, and lines, significantly enhancing detection accuracy. The proposed framework achieves impressive outcomes, with a recognition accuracy of 99% and a recognition rate of 98.8%.

Abstract The diachronic evolution of ancient Chinese military science is replete with profound philosophy and rich practical experience. This paper aims to delve into the diachronic evolution of the content of ancient Chinese military texts from the perspective of information science, utilizing information technology to address the primary research problem of how ancient military thought and practices evolved over time. By collecting representative military texts from various historical periods in China and supplementing the data with translations via machine translation technology, a comprehensive corpus of ancient Chinese military texts has been constructed. Based on this corpus, various methods such as BERTopic topic modeling, automatic summarization, and named entity recognition have been employed to meticulously explore and analyze the themes, ideas, and technologies within these ancient military texts. The results indicate that the inheritance of the ideas from “The Art of War” by Sun Tzu is primarily concentrated in the Warring States period and the Song and Yuan dynasties. Moreover, the themes and technologies in ancient Chinese military texts exhibit a trend of gradual enrichment and diversification over the course of history.

Abstract Meteorological and edaphic factors significantly affect the first flush metabolite composition of Darjeeling tea, impacting flavor, nutrition, and customer preferences. The Camellia sinensis var. sinensis grown in the Darjeeling hills was sampled at different stages of processing. 75 metabolites were identified using a GC/MS-based metabolomic and chemometric technique. The study aimed to pinpoint quality markers and create a database for Darjeeling tea authenticity, India’s first geographical indication product. Principal component analysis and partial least squares discriminant analysis revealed changes in tea metabolites during processing, while the chemometric study demonstrated variations in key compounds. Abstract In this study, a rapid, sensitive and accurate analytical method was optimized for the determination of trace levels of cadmium (Cd) by flame atomic absorption spectrophotometry (FAAS) after antimony oxide nanoparticles (AO-NPs)-based dispersive solid-phase extraction (DSPE). The AO-NPs were synthesized with a specific microwave temperature program, and they exhibited high purity and good surface morphology, making them appropriate sorbent material for the preconcentration/separation of a heavy metal. All experimental parameters affecting the extraction efficiency were optimized univariately. Under the optimum operational conditions (35 mL sample volume, 0.75 mL of pH 8.0 buffer, 15 mg of sorbent, 5 s vortex and 100 µL of 1.0 M of HNO3), the limit of detection (LOD) and the limit of quantitation (LOQ) values were determined as 0.27 and 0.89 µg L−1, respectively. Thanks to the developed method, a 164.8-fold improvement in the sensitivity of the conventional FAAS system was achieved. Reusability tests showed that the AO-NPs can be employed 5 times. The feasibility of the method was confirmed by recovery tests with mulberry leaf tea matrices, and good recovery results between 77.6 and 115.8% were obtained using the matrix matching calibration method.

Abstract This article describes a quantitative assessment method proposed to quickly identify the degree of deterioration of hardened leather artefacts. We used three techniques to artificially age samples, namely, dry-heat ageing (DH), UV-ageing (UV), and alkali-thermal ageing (AT). The deterioration mechanisms were studied via thermogravimetry/derivative thermogravimetry (TG/DTG) and attenuated total reflectance Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (ATR-FTIR). Combined with amide III band deconvolution and second derivative fitting, we constructed a method for assessing the degree of deterioration by the relative content of random coils (referred to as R) in the secondary structure of the protein. The results show that with increasing ageing time, the macrostructures and microstructures of the leather changed to varying degrees. This study elucidates the differential behaviour of vegetable-tanned leather collagen under oxidative and hydrolytic mechanisms. Based on the deterioration characteristics and fitting results, we divided the hardened leather into the following three levels. Mild deterioration: 0 ≤ R ≤ 5%; leather with reduced pores and slight dryness and hardness but with a stable collagen structure; if the β-sheet content is ≥ 68% at this point, the leather may be recrosslinked by ultraviolet irradiation. Moderate deterioration: 6 ≤ R ≤ 25%; partial hydrogen bond breaking in leather, loosening of the collagen–tan matrix, dry and hard curling of the leather surface, and fibre cementation. Severe deterioration: R ≥ 40%, β-sheet ≤ 24%, and the α-helix is higher; surface reflection, severe macroscopic deformation and embrittlement, and the breakdown and gelatinization of the three-stranded helical structure of leather proteins. The quantitative analysis method was suitable for studying the deterioration mechanisms and assessing the degree of deterioration in Heishanling leather artefacts, which also provides a new practical scheme for assessing the degree of hardened leather. Abstract This study addresses the issue of the existence of a considerable number of ancient ceramic fragments within the gene pool of ancient ceramics in Jingdezhen, as well as the limited efficacy of manual restoration techniques. To this end, an ancient ceramic restoration method based on the stitching of ancient ceramic textures through image processing is proposed. By employing the optimal single responsiveness matrix and state transfer equation, coupled with a random sampling strategy to ascertain the precise matching points and a consistency checking mechanism to preclude erroneous matching, the optimal single responsiveness matrix is devised to meticulously transform and stitch ancient ceramic textures. The dynamic programming idea is employed to identify the optimal stitching path, thereby enhancing the quality of the stitching and facilitating the precise, seamless, and natural integration of the ancient ceramic texture. The average peak signal-to-noise ratio of the stitched image of ancient ceramics is 58.7554, and the mean square error is 0.0866, which demonstrates the efficacy of image processing technology in the restoration of ancient ceramics and facilitates the intelligent advancement of cultural protection.

Abstract In this work, a novel Zr-based MOFs material (D-NH2-UiO-66) with multi-stage pore structure was prepared by introducing defects in NH2-UiO-66 through a ligand regulation strategy, aiming to enhance the SO2 adsorption performance and be applied to purify the cultural relic storage environment. The research demonstrated that the defect engineering effectively increased the pore diameter of the precursor material, leading to the exposure of internal adsorption sites within the framework and the utilization of defect sites, thereby increasing the number of adsorption sites. Moreover, the enlargement of pore diameter facilitated the diffusion of gas molecules within the framework, which enhanced the mass transfer process. Density Functional Theory (DFT) calculations were conducted to deeply investigate the impact of defect structures on the adsorption mechanism. In addition, breakthrough experiments were conducted to assess the adsorption performance of D-NH2-UiO-66 towards SO2, and the material’s potential application in cultural relic storage environments was explored through controlled laboratory tests. The results indicated that this material possesses outstanding SO2 adsorption performance, effectively improving the integrity of paper fibers and enhancing the tensile strength of the paper. This study not only provides new insights into the application of MOFs materials in environmental protection but also offers an effective solution for the preservation of cultural heritage.

Abstract Cultural diversity conservation is crucial for global sustainability, especially in rural areas facing challenges such as shrinking settlements and integration into nature reserves. However, existing research lacks discussion on how to establish cultural diversity conservation areas while considering the trade-offs with nature reserves. To address this gap, we employ the SCP method to develop a planning framework that balances ecosystem service benefits for nature conservation with the effectiveness of cultural diversity conservation, applied in rural Southwest China. Our findings indicate that overly ambitious or conservative conservation goals hinder cultural diversity conservation, whereas a value-based scenario enhances conservation effectiveness and reduces conflicts with rural natural ecosystems. We propose rural cultural diversity conservation networks comprising 9 cultural diversity areas, 33 core conservation areas, and 233 subcatchments. Compared with existing systems, our new conservation networks improve effectiveness by 29.62% and reduce the impact on the ecosystem service benefits of ecological conservation by 23.65%. These findings provide guidance for global cultural diversity conservation planning and sustainable development across various regions and scales.

Abstract The electrochemical nucleation of MoS2 from a mixture of sodium molybdate dihydrate (Na2MoO4·2H2O) and sodium sulphide (Na2S·xH2O) aqueous solution on Cu substrate has been investigated. The nucleation and formation of molybdenum sulphide were investigated employing cyclic voltammetry and chronoamperometry studies. The experimental i–t curves observed at various overpotentials were compared to theoretical curves derived for the two limiting situations of the 3D instantaneous/progressive nucleation and growth model, as reported by Scharifker and Hills. The outcome of electrodeposition potential on nucleation rate (A) and nucleation density (N) was calculated from the current–time transients and SEM morphology obtained at − 1.1 V (5.75 × 1014 and 1.86 × 1015) was compared with − 0.9 V, − 1.0 V, and − 1.2 V, respectively. The investigation of the initial stages of the transient current–time relationships developed for MoS2 electrodeposition specified that film formation occurred progressively initially and instantaneous nucleation during the course of time. A HPMoS2 with an average size of 5–65 nm was obtained at -1.1 V and exhibited superior performance towards the hydrogen evolution reaction compared to samples obtained at − 0.9 V, − 1.0 V, and − 1.2 V.

Abstract The eco-industry is an effective path to achieve ecological and economic sustainable development. However, the role played by Rosa roxburghii Tratt (R. roxburghii) industry in karst desertification control still needs to be determined. In this study, we predict the suitability probability and driving variables of R. roxburghii's distribution through a Maximum Entropy model, combining climate, population, vegetation, and soil data, and conducted a sample plot survey in a high-suitability area to explore the role of the R. roxburghii industry in ecological services by using adjacent non-R. roxburghii patches as comparisons. The results showed that South China Karst, with its simultaneous rain and heat climate characteristics, was the most suitable area for the industrialization of R. roxburghii in the world. In South China Karst, the area of no, low, medium, and high suitability zones for R. roxburghii was 4.2 × 105, 6.12 × 105, 4.64 × 105, and 4.42 × 105 km2, respectively, and population distribution was the dominant variable controlling its distribution. The net primary productivity, soil conservation, water conservation, mean species abundance, and aboveground biomass of the R. roxburghii monoculture plot in the high-suitability area were significantly lower than those of adjacent non-R. roxburghii lands and forest patches. Furthermore, the monoculture had higher trade-offs between provision, regulation, and support service. This study found that the monoculture of R. roxburghii industry, dominated by human activities, failed to improve ecological services and exacerbated the trade-offs between services. Therefore, future karst desertification control still needs to follow the agroforestry development path.

Abstract In order to protect the precious cultural heritage of the pagoda in the mountainous area from the damage caused by falling rocks, we provide targeted and effective research support and protection strategy basis. ABAQUS finite element analysis software is used to accurately simulate and analyze the response of the pagoda under the impact load of falling rocks. Firstly, the geometric modeling of the tower structure is carried out in a meticulous manner to ensure that the model accurately reflects the real shape and structural characteristics of the tower, and the material properties are assigned to it rigorously and accurately, so as to construct a finite element model that is highly adapted to the actual situation. Subsequently, the impacts of falling rocks on the pagoda under different working conditions, such as different velocities, radii, impact angles and impact heights, are comprehensively and systematically simulated to assess the structural safety and stability of the pagoda from all angles. This paper clearly reveals that the velocity, radius, impact angle and impact height of falling stones are the core key position in the structural safety assessment of the pagoda, and they are the decisive factors affecting the structural safety of the pagoda. These findings not only deepen the scientific knowledge of the response mechanism of the pagoda under the impact of falling rocks, but also provide a solid theoretical foundation and a clear direction for the subsequent development of accurate and efficient protection measures against falling rocks.

Abstract Ancient murals, invaluable cultural artifacts, frequently suffer damage from environmental and human factors, necessitating effective restoration techniques. Traditional methods, which rely on manual skills, are time-consuming and often inconsistent. This study introduces an innovative mural restoration approach using a generative adversarial network (GAN) within a UNet architecture. The generator integrates Transformer and convolutional neural network (CNN) components, effectively capturing and reconstructing complex mural features. This work's novelty lies in integrating the Group-wise Multi-scale Self-Attention (GMSA), an Encoder-Decoder Feature Interaction (EDFI) module, and a Local Feature Enhancement Block (LFEB). These components allow the model to better capture, reconstruct, and enhance mural features, leading to a significant improvement over traditional restoration methods. Tested on a dataset of Tang Dynasty murals, the method demonstrated superior performance in PSNR, SSIM, and LPIPS metrics compared to seven other techniques. Ablation studies confirmed the effectiveness of the heterogeneous network design and the critical contributions of the GMSA, EDFI, and LFEB modules. Practical restoration experiments showed the method's ability to handle various types of mural damage, providing seamless and visually authentic restorations. This novel approach offers a promising solution for the digital preservation and restoration of cultural heritage murals, with potential applications in practical restoration projects.

Abstract Under the background of the transformation of resource-based cities, heritage as the symbolic cultural representation plays a synergistic role in revitalizing urban vibrancy. A majority of contemporary research focuses on specific heritage restoration and renovation. However, scant literature has been concerned with an integrated heritage corridor upgrading framework from the spatial quality perspective, which has limited effects on promoting urban socio-cultural development. This research aims to evaluate the heritage corridor through the GIS-based environmental spatial model (ESM) with multi-source data and verification through AI-based image semantic segmentation analysis, cultivating suggestions for heritage restoration and management to revitalize the holistic urban–rural areas. The research takes a resource-based city, Fengfeng Mining District (FMD) in Handan, China, as a research case. The research found heterogeneity of the heritage evaluation results and their geographical distribution, and image-based spatial quality verification evidenced the suitability and reliability of ESM for heritage assessment. This research proposes a quantitative and holistic evaluation framework for assessing and improving heritage corridors. The restoration and optimization of heritage corridors should combine a comprehensive, precise, and people-oriented spatial quality assessment, and the GIS-based ESM analysis method could be an effective decision-making support system.

Abstract Forty-six ceramic shards from the Early Bronze Age (EBA) archaeological site of Tappeh Gabri (the archaeological site 013), dated back to the latter half of the third millennium BCE and located at the Varzaneh Plain, central Iran, were studied using micro energy dispersive X-ray fluorescence (µ-EDXRF) and petrographic analysis. The precision and accuracy of quantitative data obtained by µ-EDXRF were tested using a series of geological certified reference materials (CRM). The expanded uncertainty and the Mantel test on data obtained by µ-EDXRF showed accurate and precise quantitative µ-EDXRF estimation of elements present in the CRMs above their quantification limit. We show that the majority of the ceramics at the Varzaneh Plain is most probably local product. Discussions prompted collecting further compositional data and performing petrographic investigation from the ceramic shards from southern and south-western Iran in order to shed light on the origin of the ceramic shards excavated at the Varzaneh Plain.

Three-dimensional printing technology has emerged as a versatile and cost-effective alternative for the fabrication of electrochemical sensors. To enhance sensor sensitivity and biocompatibility, a diverse range of biocompatible and conductive materials can be employed in these devices. This allows these sensors to be modified to detect a wide range of analytes in various fields. 3D-printed electrochemical sensors have the potential to play a pivotal role in personalized medicine by enabling the real-time monitoring of metabolite and biomarker levels. These data can be used to personalize treatment strategies and optimize patient outcomes. The portability and low-cost nature of 3D-printed electrochemical sensors make them suitable for point-of-care (POC) diagnostics. These tests enable rapid and decentralized analyses, aiding in diagnosis and treatment decisions in resource-limited settings. Among the techniques widely reported in the literature for 3D printing, the fused deposition modeling (FDM) technique is the most commonly used for the development of electrochemical devices due to the easy accessibility of equipment and materials. Focusing on the FDM technique, this review explores the critical factors influencing the fabrication of electrochemical sensors and discusses potential applications in clinical analysis, while acknowledging the challenges that need to be overcome for its effective adoption.

Boron nitride nanostructures (BNNs), including nanotubes, nanosheets, and nanoribbons, are renowned for their exceptional thermal stability, chemical inertness, mechanical strength, and high surface area, making them suitable for advanced material applications. Metal–organic frameworks (MOFs), characterized by their porous crystalline structures, high surface area, and tunable porosity, have emerged as excellent candidates for gas adsorption and storage applications, particularly in the context of hydrogen. This paper explores the synthesis and properties of BNNs and MOFs, alongside the innovative approach of integrating BNNs within MOFs to create composite materials with synergistic properties. The integration of BNNs into MOFs enhances the overall thermal and chemical stability of the composite while improving hydrogen sensing and storage performance. Various synthesis methods for both BNNs and MOFs are discussed, including chemical vapor deposition, solvothermal synthesis, and in situ growth, with a focus on their scalability and reproducibility. Furthermore, the mechanisms underlying hydrogen sensing and storage are examined, including physisorption, chemisorption, charge transfer, and work function modulation. Electrochemical characterization techniques, such as cyclic voltammetry, electrochemical impedance spectroscopy, and galvanostatic charge–discharge, are used to analyze the performance of BNN-MOF systems in hydrogen storage and sensing applications. These methods offer insights into the material’s electrochemical behavior and its potential to store hydrogen efficiently. Potential industrial applications of BNN-MOF composites are highlighted, particularly in fuel cells, hydrogen-powered vehicles, safety monitoring in hydrogen production and distribution networks, and energy storage devices. The integration of these materials can contribute significantly to the development of more efficient hydrogen energy systems. Finally, this study outlines key recommendations for future research, which include optimizing synthesis techniques, improving the hydrogen interaction mechanisms, enhancing the stability and durability of BNN-MOF composites, and performing comprehensive economic and environmental assessments. BNN-MOF composites represent a promising direction in the advancement of hydrogen sensing and storage technologies, offering significant potential to support the transition toward sustainable energy systems and hydrogen-based economies.

Complexation between carnitine and acetylated or benzylated pyrogallol[4]arenes was studied in DMSO via dynamic NMR, UV-vis spectroscopy, and in the gas phase via electrospray ionization-mass spectrometry (ESI-MS). In the presence of benzylated tetra(phenyl)pyrogallol[4]arene, the interaction with carnitine via NMR was evident and was confirmed by means of UV-vis spectroscopy, where the formation of a host–guest-type complex was observed; this was stable and exhibited a change to a clear color. With benzylated tetra(propyl)pyrogallol[4]arene, the results showed that there was no interaction with the neurotransmitter. A plausible explanation for this behavior is based on the dynamic behavior of the benzylated tetra(propyl)pyrogallol[4]arene, and this shows the dependence on the size of the cavities and the substituent on the lower rim of the pyrogallo[4]arenes. Suitable crystals of O-acetylated-tetra(propyl)calix[4]pyrogallolarene were obtained and were characterized through an X-ray crystal structure determination.

This study describes the development of an optical-based surface plasmon resonance (SPR) aptasensor for the detection of cocaine. The aptasensor was prepared by first attaching gold nanoparticles to a clean SPR chip surface, followed by the addition of an aptamer to create a modified surface. This surface was characterized using contact angle and atomic force microscopy, revealing surface roughness values of 0.28 nm and 28.12 nm for the blank and modified surfaces, respectively. The detection of cocaine was carried out in the concentration range of 1 ng/mL to 1000 ng/mL, with a detection time of approximately 8 min and a cocaine limit of detection (LOD) of 0.43 ng/mL. Repeatability studies were conducted, and the stability of the signal response was examined at a concentration of 200 ng/mL. Adsorption isotherm models, including Scatchard, Langmuir, and Freundlich models, were calculated to assess the surface homogeneity of the SPR aptasensor chip, with the results indicating compatibility with the Langmuir isotherm model.

Metal corrosion poses a significant challenge for industries by decreasing the lifespan of materials and escalating maintenance and replacement costs. This study is critically important, as it assesses the corrosion resistance properties of annealed steel wire electrodes coated with manganese, employing chronoamperometry and linear voltammetry techniques. The electrodes were immersed in an electrolyte solution and subjected to chronoamperometry at various voltages (−0.55 V, −0.60 V, and −0.70 V) and durations (60 s and 1800 s). Subsequently, linear voltammetry was performed over a potential range from −0.8 V to 0.8 V to generate Tafel plots. The Butler–Volmer equation was applied to the data obtained to determine the corrosion current density. The results indicate that the optimal conditions for forming a highly effective protective manganese layer occur at a potential of −0.70 V for 1800 s. Under these conditions, the electrodes exhibited superior corrosion resistance. This study also revealed that shorter durations and less negative potentials led to less-effective manganese coatings, with higher corrosion rates and reduced stability. These findings are significant for developing efficient corrosion protection methods in industrial and research applications, providing clear parameters for optimizing the manganese electrodeposition process on annealed steel.

Defense wounds generally occur when a victim attempts to protect vital organs and blood vessels during an assault, and are therefore typically located on the forearms or hands. Gunshot-induced defense wounds are less frequent compared to stab wounds, which have been extensively described in the literature. We present three cases where victims unsuccessfully attempted to defend themselves from gunshots, and where the detailed description of injuries played a key role in the reconstruction of the crime scenes. In the first case, a man was shot with a smooth-bore shotgun, presenting a “through-and-through” gunshot wound on the lateral surface of the left forearm and a large gaping wound on the posterior surface of the same forearm. The second and third cases involved two men who were shot with handguns. The first displayed an entrance wound on the dorsal surface of the right hand, with burned edges and smoke soiling, and an exit wound on the palmar surface. The second case involved two wounds on the left hand: one on the dorsum and the other on the palm. To the best of our knowledge, few studies in the literature emphasize the role of gunshot defense wounds in aiding the reconstruction of crime dynamics. The cases presented in this study highlight the importance of precisely defining the pathological and morphological features of the wounds, as well as the bullet trajectories, to accurately identify defense wounds. These findings are valuable for reconstructing the dynamics of the assault and providing critical information to the public prosecutor.

Background: This scoping review examines the risk factors considered in assessing the dangerousness of individuals found Not Criminally Responsible on Account of Mental Disorder (NCRMD) in Canadian administrative courts. This review aims to identify the factors used by mental health review boards during annual case reviews to guide decisions on detention or release. Methods: Using a scoping review approach following PRISMA guidelines, this study analyzed research across multiple databases to identify relevant studies focusing on risk assessment for NCRMD cases. Results: The findings indicate that five primary categories of risk factors—historical, clinical, behavioral, legal, and miscellaneous—are influential in the decision-making process. Historical factors, such as past violence and early psychiatric contacts, are critical in predicting future risk. Clinical factors, including psychiatric diagnosis and treatment adherence, are key to evaluating current and potential future risks. This study reveals variability in the application of standardized risk assessment tools, highlighting a need for more consistent practices across Canadian jurisdictions. Conclusion: This review concludes that, while a multifaceted approach to risk assessment is essential for balancing public safety with individual rehabilitation, further research is needed to refine these processes and establish more uniform standards for managing NCRMD cases in forensic psychiatry.

Forensic Odontology is a critical field within forensic science, with significant importance in legal contexts and the identification of victims in mass disasters or cases of abuse. This article focuses on the efforts made by the European University Cyprus (EUC) School of Dentistry to raise awareness among dental students regarding legal and forensic dentistry practices. Through voluntary visits to the Anthropological Laboratory of the Committee on Missing Persons (CMP) in Cyprus, students gain firsthand experience and insights into anthropological analysis for identifying missing individuals. These visits provide students with practical application opportunities, emphasizing record-keeping practices, oral tissue morphology analysis, and unique aspects of restorative work during identification processes. Feedback from participating students highlights the value of experiential learning in increasing awareness about forensic odontology’s importance and relevance in real-world scenarios. The initiatives undertaken by the EUC School of Dentistry contribute to enhancing legal and forensic dentistry awareness among future dental professionals in Cyprus.

The Y chromosome plays a crucial role in understanding the overall landscape of male health. Incorporating the Y chromosome into genomic and epigenomic research may elucidate the male-specific mechanisms behind aging and the pathogenesis of certain conditions, both acute and chronic. Present epigenetic research focuses on the effects of modifications like methylation on autosomal chromosomes. However, little research has been conducted to further these investigations in sex chromosomes, especially the Y chromosome. Epigenetic analyses can identify age-associated CpG sites that may offer potential biomarkers for age estimation and disease risk assessment, among others. This review emphasizes interdisciplinary efforts that have been made in the construction of an assembly and the application of “epigenetic clocks” to the Y chromosome. The studies reviewed here examined the effects of aging on genes such as NLGN4Y, DDX3Y, and TBL1Y, and on male-specific health disparities and disease etiologies, as well as the potential for the use of these genes to assess the diagnostic and age algorithmic potential of Y-specific genes.

Background: The SARS-CoV-2 pandemic led to an enormous global health, social and economic crisis. The pandemic caused considerable upheaval and considerable difficulties due to an unforeseen and devastating health condition. Materials and Methods: We discuss the numerous challenges encountered in the fields of forensic medicine and public health during the COVID-19 pandemic. Particularly during the first wave of the pandemic, forensic pathologists faced significant difficulties due to the lack of safe autopsy protocols and insufficient personal protective equipment. Mainly in Europe, they had to manage a substantial number of potential cases of medical liability related to COVID-19. The widespread outbreak of the virus in residential care homes and prisons posed another significant challenge. Furthermore, forensic pathologists had to address the issue of complications arising from vaccination campaigns. Conclusions: This article underscores the need for continued efforts in scientific research and healthcare preparedness to effectively manage such complex crises. Forensic pathologists must be equipped with the necessary resources and training to address unpredictable, complex situations with far-reaching social implications.

Bacteria-related infections remain a leading cause of dental implant failures. Despite the successful history of titanium implants, naturally forming oxides lack antibacterial properties. Crystalline oxides, modified through anodization processes, have shown photocatalytic-induced antibacterial properties when exposed to sufficient energy sources such as UVA light. Chemically doping these oxides with some metallic and non-metallic elements has been shown to enhance their photocatalytic activity (PCA). The present study’s objectives were to assess the relative UVA and violet-light-irradiated PCA levels, bacterial attachment levels, and pre-osteoblast early cell viability levels of phosphorus-doped and phosphorus-and-silver-doped anatase-phase oxides. Each oxide revealed similar surface topographies and surface porosity levels. However, the phosphorus-and-silver-doped oxides exhibited significantly higher PCA levels compared to the phosphorus-doped oxide counterpart after irradiation with 365 nm UVA (p < 0.0001) or 410 nm violet (p = 0.007 and 0.03) light. The phosphorus-doped oxides and phosphorus-and-silver-doped oxides revealed similar Staphylococcus aureus attachment levels after 60 min of UVA irradiation. The phosphorus-and-silver-doped oxides exhibited significantly increased 7-day cell viability compared to their phosphorus-doped oxide counterparts. Thus, it was concluded that the silver doping additions to the oxides show much promise for biomaterials applications and warrant further exploration.

Alterations in cellular energy metabolism are a hallmark of cancer and lactate dehydrogenase (LDH) enzymes are overexpressed in many cancers regardless of sufficient oxygen and functional mitochondria. Further, L-lactate plays signaling roles in multiple cell types. We evaluated the effect of singlet oxygen and hypochlorous acid (HOCl) on pig heart LDH-B, which shares 97% homology with human LDH-B. Singlet oxygen was generated photochemically using methylene blue or the chlorophyll metabolites, pheophorbide A and chlorin e6. Singlet oxygen induced protein crosslinks observed by SDS-PAGE under reducing conditions and inhibited LDH-B activity. Ascorbate, hydrocaffeic acid, glutathione and sodium azide were employed as singlet oxygen scavengers and shown to protect LDH-B. Using fluorescein-modified maleimide, no changes in cysteine availability as a result of singlet oxygen damage were observed. This was in contrast to HOCl, which induced the formation of disulfides between LDH-B subunits, thereby decreasing LDH-B labeling with fluorescein. HOCl oxidation inhibited LDH-B activity; however, disulfide reduction did not restore it. LDH-B cysteines were resistant to millimolar H2O2, chloramines and Angeli’s salt. In the absence of pyruvate, LDH-B enhanced NADH oxidation in a chain reaction initiated by singlet oxygen that resulted in H2O2 formation. Once damaged by either singlet oxygen or HOCl, NADH oxidation by LDH-B was impaired.

Noble gases are a valuable but overlooked source of effective and safe therapeutics. Being monoatomic and chemically inert, they nonetheless have a surprisingly wide range of biochemical and medically valuable properties. This mini review briefly summarizes these properties for the most widely used noble gases and focuses and research gaps and missed opportunities for wider use of these intriguing ‘atomic’ drugs. The main research gaps and opportunities lie firstly in the application of advanced computational modelling methods for noble gases and recent developments in accurate predictions of protein structures from sequence (AlphaFold), and secondly in the use of very efficient and selective drug delivery technologies to improve the solubility, efficacy, and delivery of noble gases to key targets, especially for the lighter, poorly soluble gases.

Abstract As one of the pioneering nations to heed the Food and Agriculture Organization (FOA) initiative, China has implemented a comprehensive evaluation and protection framework for China’s Nationally Important Agricultural Heritage Systems (CNIAHS). This research concentrated on 188 CNIAHS sites, utilizing methodologies including spatial information entropy, kernel density estimation and hotspot analysis to scrutinize the spatial configurations and evolutionary trajectories of CNIAHS throughout six historical epochs; combined with the history of agriculture in different periods, the laws of the formation of CNIAHS spatial distribution are discovered, and a foundation for the construction of CNIAHS protection system under the background of national spatial planning are provided. The results disclose: (1) CNIAHS manifests a clustered spatial distribution, predominantly situated in the southeastern sector of China’s Yangtze River Basin, with Jiangsu, Zhejiang, Fujian, and Jiangxi provinces emerging as significant hotspot areas; (2) concerning spatial pattern evolution, heritage sites experienced a phased transitional process, migrating from western frontier areas to the central Yellow River Basin, subsequently concentrating in the southeastern Yangtze River Basin, and then redistributing back to frontier regions. This progression has cumulatively formed a spatial pattern mainly concentrated in southeastern China; (3) pertaining to typological patterns, high-value crop and spice systems exhibit a clustered spatial distribution, whereas other types display uniform or dispersed configurations; and (4) the complexity of spatial patterns in various regions increased over different periods, with the number of heritage sites demonstrating cumulative characteristics. The spatial patterns indicated weakly correlated transitional shifts, signifying a non-linear progression in the spatial patterns of CNIAHS. (5) The subsequent excavation of CNIAHS should fan out from point to area to promote the exploration of various types of CNIAHS in northeast and southwest China; and the excavation of marine heritage in the southeast China. These insights provide substantial references for the future exploration and preservation of CNIAHS.

Abstract The Qinghai-Tibetan Plateau (QTP) is vital for stabilizing climate in East and South Asia and its glaciers and snow meltwater nourish key continental rivers. The region’s forests are not only ecologically essential but also fragile. The practices of local herdsmen, shaped by long-standing cultural traditions, significantly affect forest dynamics. This study examines the vital role that Tibetan Buddhist monasteries play in forest conservation on the QTP. We utilize data sources including extensive field surveys and geospatial data to assess the impact of monastery and village locations on forest conditions. Spatial analysis techniques, such as Moran’s I and Ripley’s K function, reveal significant clustering of monasteries and villages, which are closely linked with forest conditions. Our findings indicate that forests near Buddhist monasteries have higher aboveground biomass and better quality compared to other areas, suggesting that their presence supports better forest conservation practices. This positive influence is attributed to the cultural significance of these sites and the environmental consciousness promoted by Buddhist cultural teachings. Additionally, this study employs analytical methods including Random Forest and Partial Least Squares Structural Equation Modeling (PLS-SEM) to explore the drivers of forest quality. Initial aboveground biomass, climatic factors, and monastery density emerge as key influences on forest quality within monastery buffer zones, indicating that cultural factors are crucial in shaping forest landscapes.

Abstract Cultural memes, which have the same heritability and variability as particulate biological genes, provide culture units that can be shared and transmitted across different periods, allowing cultural computing to be performed in a fine-grained manner. This paper extracts regional architectural cultural memes from the basic information of Harbin city’s modern architectural heritage and constructs an urban historical architectural cultural meme matrix. By using the social network calculation method, we analyse representative architectural memes, such as material memes, structural system memes, and architectural style memes, which represent the evolution of urban architectural culture, construct a network of urban architectural cultural memes, and explore their clustering characteristics and centrality characteristics. The research shows that Harbin’s urban architectural culture in the development and evolution of the process has a holistic cultural characterisation beyond architectural meme monoliths and architectural memeplexes and has formed a highly coupled and complex cultural system. The clustering coefficients of the architectural meme networks in the cultural pattern of urban architecture in different periods are all between 0.575 and 0.676 (more than 0.5), suggesting that the cultural similarities within the clusters of architectural heritages in the city have the characteristics of continuous heredity. The methodology and conclusions of this study can provide a methodological reference for the design of contemporary urban architecture cultural patterns and provide data supporting the development and improvement of urban historic district conservation planning.

Abstract As a vital carrier of traditional culture, Intangible Cultural Heritage (ICH) not only preserves historical value but also fosters cultural identity and confidence. This study utilizes explainable machine learning and coupled coordination models to analyze the spatial distribution and formation mechanisms of ICH resources in the Jiangsu-Zhejiang-Shanghai (Jiang-Zhe-Hu). The results indicate that (1) ICH resources in the Jiang-Zhe-Hu exhibit a clustered distribution pattern characterized by “three primary cores and two secondary cores.” The primary core areas are Shanghai, Hangzhou, and Suzhou, while the secondary core areas are Yangzhou and Nanjing. (2) Population, number of religious places, and GDP have a significant positive impact on the distribution of ICH in the Jiang-Zhe-Hu. NDVI and road mileage have relatively minor effects on ICH distribution. (3) In terms of ICH resources, Zhejiang Province overall has a higher level than Jiangsu Province, with Lishui having the highest evaluation value and the most abundant resources. Regarding the level of tourism industry development, Shanghai has the highest comprehensive evaluation value, followed by Suzhou, Nanjing, Hangzhou, Wuxi, and Changzhou, all of which have relatively high levels of tourism development. (4) According to the coupled coordination model analysis, Shanghai demonstrates the best coupling degree between ICH resources and the tourism industry, achieving a good coordination level. In Jiangsu Province, the integration of ICH resources and the tourism industry is relatively better in the southern (e.g., Nanjing, Suzhou), but there are still imbalances in development in the northern. Zhejiang Province has an overall higher degree of integration between ICH and the tourism industry compared to Jiangsu, with more balanced development. However, there is still room for improvement in the deep integration of ICH resources with the tourism industry.
