A nonlinear saturation mechanism for reversed shear Alfven eigenmode (RSAE) is proposed and analysed, and is shown to be of relevance to typical reactor parameter region. The saturation is achieved through the generation of high-frequency quasi-mode due to nonlinear coupling of two RSAEs, which is then damped due to coupling with the shear Alfven continuum, and leads to the nonlinear saturation of the primary RSAEs . A workflow is developed based on the ideal MHD model to investigate the linear physics of various Alfv\'en eigenmodes in general axisymmetric toroidal geometry, by solving the coupled shear Alfv\'en wave (SAW) and ion sound wave (ISW) equations in ballooning space. The model equations are solved by the FALCON code in the singular layer, and the corresponding solutions are then taken as the boundary conditions for calculating parallel mode structures in the whole ballooning space. As an application of the code, the frequencies and mode structures of toroidal Alfv\'en eigenmode (TAE) are calculated in the reference equilibria of the Divertor Tokamak Test facility (DTT) with positive and negative triangularities, respectively. By properly handling the boundary conditions, we demonstrate finite TAE damping due to coupling with the local acoustic continuum, and find that the damping rate is small for typical plasma parameters.

Using the slab plasma as a paradigm model, we have derived analytically equations for the nonlinear generation of zero-frequency zonal flows by electron drift waves including, on the same footing, both the beat-driven and spontaneous excitations. It is found that the beat-driven zonal flow tends to reduce the frequency mismatch between the electron drift waves and, thereby, contributes to a significant O(1) enhancement of the modulational instability drive and lowering its threshold. In this work, gyrokinetic theory of drift waves (DWs) self-regulation via the forced driven zonal flow (ZF) is presented, and finite diamagnetic drift frequency due to plasma nonuniformity is shown to play dominant role in ZF forced generation. The obtained nonlinear DW equation is a nonlinear Schr\"odinger equation, in which the linear dispersiveness, linear growth, nonuniformity of diamagnetic drift frequency, and cubic nonlinearity induced by feedback of forced-driven ZF to DWs are self-consistently included. The nonlinear DW equation is solved numerically in both uniform and nonuniform plasmas. It is shown that DWenvelope soliton may form due to the balance of linear dispersiveness and nonlinearity, and lead to turbulence spreading to linearly stable region. It is further found that though the threshold on DW amplitude for soliton formation is well within the relevant parameter regimes of realistic tokamak experiments, solitons can not extend beyond the range bounded by the turning points of the wave packet when plasma nonuniformity is self-consistently accounted for.

The parametric decay of toroidal Alfv\'en eigenmode (TAE) in nonuniform plasmas is investigated using nonlinear gyrokinetic equation. It is found that, the plasma nonuniformity not only significantly enhances the nonlinear coupling cross-section, but also qualitatively modifies the decay process. Specifically, the condition for spontaneous decay becomes the toroidal mode number of the sideband TAE being higher than that of the pump TAE, instead of the frequency of the sideband TAE being lower than the pump TAE in uniform plasmas. The consequences on TAE saturation and energetic particle transport are also discussed.

A general equation describing the resonant nonlinear mode-coupling among kinetic Alfv\'en waves (KAWs) is derived using nonlinear gyrokinetic theory, which can be applied to study the potentially strong spectral energy transfer of KAWs. As a first application, the parametric decay of a pump KAW into two sideband KAWs are studied, with particular emphasis on the cascading in perpendicular wavenumber. It is found that, for the "co-propagating" cases with all three KAWs propagating in the same direction along the equilibrium magnetic field line, it exhibits a dual cascading character in the perpendicular wavenumber space; while for the "counter-propagating" cases with one sideband propagating in the opposite direction with respect to the pump wave, it instead, can exhibit both dual and inverse cascading behaviors. The implications on SAW instability nonlinear saturation and charged particle transport in fusion plasmas is also discussed.

A novel channel for fuel ions heating in tokamak core plasma is proposed and analyzed using nonlinear gyrokinetic theory. The channel is achieved via spontaneous decay of reversed shear Alfv\'en eigenmode (RSAE) into low frequency Alfv\'en modes (LFAM), which then heat fuel ions via collisionless ion Landau damping. The conditions for RSAE spontaneous decay are investigated, and the saturation level and the consequent fuel ion heating rate are also derived. The channel is expected to be crucial for future reactors operating under reversed shear configurations, where fusion alpha particles are generated in the tokamak core where the magnetic shear is typically reversed, and there is a dense RSAE spectrum due to the small alpha particle characteristic dimensionless orbits., Comment: 4 page proceeding for EPS-DPP conference

Nonlinear wave-wave coupling constitutes an important route for the turbulence spectrum evolution in both space and laboratory plasmas. For example, in a reactor relevant fusion plasma, a rich spectrum of symmetry breaking shear Alfv\'en wave (SAW) instabilities are expected to be excited by energetic fusion alpha particles, and self-consistently determine the anomalous alpha particle transport rate by the saturated electromagnetic perturbations. In this work, we will show that the nonlinear gyrokinetic theory is a necessary and powerful tool in qualitatively and quantitatively investigating the nonlinear wave-wave coupling processes. More specifically, one needs to employ the gyrokinetic approach in order to account for the breaking of the ``pure Alfv\'enic state" in the short wavelength kinetic regime, due to the short wavelength structures associated with nonuniformity intrinsic to magnetically confined plasmas. Using well-known toroidal Alfv\'en eigenmode (TAE) as a paradigm case, three nonlinear wave-wave coupling channels expected to significantly influence the TAE nonlinear dynamics are investigated to demonstrate the strength and necessity of nonlinear gyrokinetic theory in predicting crucial processes in a future reactor burning plasma. These are: 1. the nonlinear excitation of meso-scale zonal field structures via modulational instability and TAE scattering into short-wavelength stable domain; 2. the TAE frequency cascading due to nonlinear ion induced scattering and the resulting saturated TAE spectrum; and 3. the cross-scale coupling of TAE with micro-scale ambient drift wave turbulence and its effect on TAE regulation and anomalous electron heating., Comment: submitted to Reviews of Modern Plasma Physics

Using electron drift wave (eDW) as a paradigm model, we have investigated analytically direct wave-wave interactions between a test DW and ambient toroidal Alfv\'en eigenmodes (TAE) in toroidal plasmas, and their effects on the stability of the eDW. The nonlinear effects enter via scatterings to short-wavelength electron Landau damped kinetic Alfv\'en waves (KAWs). Specifically, it is found that scatterings to upper-sideband KAW lead to stimulated absorption of eDW. Scatterings to the lower-sideband KAW, on the contrary, lead to its spontaneous emission. As a consequence, for typical parameters and fluctuation intensity, nonlinear scatterings by TAE have negligible net effects on the eDW stability; in contrast to the ``reverse" process investigated in Ref. In this work, we further develop a general phase-space transport theory in axisymmetric tokamak plasmas based upon the concept of zonal state (ZS). Within this theoretical framework, ZS corresponds to a renormalized nonlinear equilibrium consisting of phase space zonal structures (PSZS) and zonal electromagnetic fields (ZFs) which evolve self-consistently with symmetry breaking fluctuations and sources/collisions. More specifically, our theoretical approach involves deriving governing equations of the distribution function as well as applying the Chew Goldberger Low (CGL) description to separate the spatiotemporal microscale structures and the macro-/meso- scale components of this equilibrium. The nonlinear physics of zonal flows and of geodesic acoustic modes/energetic particle driven geodesic acoustic modes is then analyzed in details to illustrate the implications of this theoretical framework.

The energetic electrons (EEs) generated through auxiliary heating have been found to destabilize various Alfven eigenmodes (AEs) in recent experiments, which in turn lead to the EE transport and degrade the plasma energy confinement. In this work, we propose a global fluid-kinetic hybrid model for studying corresponding kinetic-magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) processes by coupling the drift-kinetic EEs to the Landau-fluid model of bulk plasmas in a non-perturbative manner. The numerical capability of Landau-fluid bulk plasmas is obtained based on a well-benchmarked eigenvalue code MAS [Multiscale Analysis of plasma Stabilities, J. Bao et al. Nucl. Fusion accepted 2023], and the EE responses to the electromagnetic fluctuations are analytically derived, which not only contribute to the MHD interchange drive and parallel current but also lead to the newly kinetic particle compression with the precessional drift resonance in the leading order. The hybrid model is casted into a nonlinear eigenvalue matrix equation and solved iteratively using Newton's method. By calibrating the EE precession frequency against the particle equation of motion in general geometry and applying more realistic trapped particle distribution in the poloidal plane, MAS simulations of EE-driven beta-induced Alfven eigenmodes (e-BAE) show excellent agreements with gyrokinetic particle-in-cell simulations, and the non-perturbative effects of EEs on e-BAE mode structure, growth rate and damping rate are demonstrated. With these efforts, the upgraded MAS greatly improves the computation efficiency for plasma problems related to deeply-trapped EEs, which is superior than initial-value simulations restricted by the stringent electron Courant condition regarding to the practical application of fast linear analysis., Comment: 24 pages, 11 figures

The linear properties of the low-frequency shear Alfv\'en waves such as those associated with the beta-induced Alfv\'en eigenmodes (BAEs) and the low-frequency modes observed in reversed-magnetic-shear DIII-D discharges (W. Heidbrink, et al 2021 Nucl. Fusion 61 066031) are theoretically investigated and delineated based on the theoretical framework of the general fishbone-like dispersion relation (GFLDR). By adopting representative experimental equilibrium profiles, it is found that the low-frequency modes and BAEs are, respectively, the reactive-type and dissipative-type unstable modes with dominant Alfv\'enic polarization, thus the former being more precisely called low-frequency Alfv\'en modes (LFAMs). More specifically, due to different instability mechanisms, the maximal drive of BAEs occurs, in comparison to LFAMs, when the minimum of the safety factor ($q_{min}$) deviates from a rational number. Meanwhile, the BAE eigenfunction peaks at the radial position of the maximum energetic particle pressure gradient, resulting in a large deviation from the $q_{min}$ surface. Moreover, the ascending frequency spectrum patterns of the experimentally observed BAEs and LFAMs can be theoretically reproduced by varying $q_{min}$ and also be well interpreted based on the GFLDR. The present analysis illustrates the solid predictive capability of the GFLDR and its practical usefulness in enhancing the interpretative capability of both experimental and numerical simulation results.

We have investigated hybridized magnon-phonon excitation (magnon polarons) in spin Seebeck effects (SSEs) in Bi$_x$Y$_{3-x}$Fe$_{5}$O$_{12}$ (Bi$_x$Y$_{3-x}$IG; $x=0$, $0.5$, and $0.9$) films with Pt contact. We observed sharp peak structures in the magnetic field $H$ dependence of the longitudinal SSE (LSSE) voltages, which appear when the phonon dispersions are tangential to the magnon dispersion curve in Bi$_x$Y$_{3-x}$IG. By increasing the Bi amount $x$, the peak fields in the LSSE shift toward lower $H$ values due to the reduction of the sound velocities in Bi$_x$Y$_{3-x}$IG. We also measured the SSE in a nonlocal configuration and found that magnon-polaron anomalies appear with different signs and intensities. Our result shows composition-tunability of magnon-polaron anomalies and provides a clue to further unravel the physics of magnon-polaron SSEs., Comment: Editors' Suggestion, 14 pages, 11 figures

The evolution of the coupled drift wave (DW) and energetic-particle-induced geodesic acoustic mode (EGAM) nonlinear system is investigated using the fully nonlinear coupled DW-EGAM two-field equations, with emphasis on the turbulence spreading in the form of soliton and the nonlinear energy transfer between DW and EGAM. Four scenarios with different combinations of EGAM initial amplitudes and linear EGAM growth rates are designed to delineate the effects of linear EGAM drive and finite EGAM amplitude on DW nonlinear dynamic evolution. In presence of the linear EPs drive, the soliton propagation is enhanced, due to the generation of small radial scale structures. Two conservation laws of the nonlinear system are derived, including the energy conservation law. It is found that the energy of DW always decreases and that of EGAM always increases, leading to regulation of DW by EGAM., Comment: 19 figures, 9 pages

We demonstrate analytically that, in toroidal plasmas, scattering by drift wave turbulence could lead to appreciable damping of toroidal Alfven eigenmodes via generation of short-wavelength electron Landau damped kinetic Alfven waves. A corresponding analytic expression of the damping rate is derived, and found to be, typically, comparable to the linear drive by energetic particles. General nonlinear equations describing reversed shear Alfven eigenmode (RSAE) self-modulation via zero frequency zonal structure (ZFZS) generation are derived using nonlinear gyrokinetic theory, which are then applied to study the spontaneous ZFZS excitation as well as RSAE nonlinear saturation. It is found that both electrostatic zonal flow (ZF) and electromagnetic zonal current (ZC) can be preferentially excited by finite amplitude RSAE, depending on specific plasma parameters. The modification to local shear Alfven wave continuum is evaluated using the derived saturation level of ZC, which is shown to play a comparable role in saturating RSAE with the ZFZS scattering.

The two-field equations governing fully nonlinear dynamics of the drift wave (DW) and geodesic acoustic mode (GAM) in the toroidal geometry are derived in nonlinear gyrokinetic framework. Two stages with distinctive features are identified and analyzed. In the linear growth stage, the set of nonlinear equations can be reduced to the intensively studied parametric decay instability (PDI), accounting for the spontaneous resonant excitation of GAM by DW. The main results of previous works on spontaneous GAM excitation, e.g., the much enhanced GAM group velocity and the nonlinear growth rate of GAM, are reproduced from numerical solution of the two-field equations. In the fully nonlinear stage, soliton structures are observed to form due to the balancing of the self-trapping effect by the spontaneously excited GAM and kinetic dispersiveness of DW. The soliton structures enhance turbulence spreading from DW linearly unstable to stable region, exhibiting convective propagation instead of typical linear dispersive process, and is thus, expected to induce core-edge interaction and nonlocal transport., Comment: 8 pages; 10 figures; article; to be submitted

The local stability of ion-temperature gradient driven mode (ITG) in the presence of a given radial electric field is investigated using gyrokinetic theory and ballooning mode formalism with toroidal effect accounted for. It is found that, zero frequency radial electric field induced poloidal rotation can significantly stabilize ITG, while the associated density perturbation has little effect on ITG stability due to the modification of finite-orbit-width effect. Two novel nonlinear mode coupling processes for reversed shear Alfven eigenmode (RSAE) nonlinear saturation are proposed and investigated. In the first process, RSAE nonlinearly couples to a co-propagating toroidal Alfven eigenmode (TAE) with the same toroidal and poloidal mode numbers, and generates a geodesic acoustic mode (GAM). In the second process, RSAE couples to a counter-propagating TAE and generates an ion acoustic wave quasi-mode (IAW). The condition for the two processes to occur is favored during current ramp. Secondary low frequency mode generation by energetic particle induced geodesic acoustic mode (EGAM) observed in LHD experiment is studied using nonlinear gyrokinetic theory. It is found that the EGAM frequency can be significantly higher than local geodesic acoustic mode (GAM) frequency in low collisionality plasmas, and it can decay into two GAMs as its frequency approaches twice GAM frequency, in a process analogous to the well-known two plasmon decay instability. Hybrid MHD-gyrokinetic code simulations are used to investigate the dynamics of frequency sweeping reversed shear Alfv\'en eigenmode (RSAE) strongly driven by energetic particles (EPs) during plasma current ramp-up in a conventional tokamak configuration. A series of weakly reversed shear equilibria representing time slices of long timescale MHD equilibrium evolution is considered, where the self-consistent RSAE-EP resonant interactions on the short timescale are analyzed in detail. Both linear and nonlinear RSAE dynamics are shown to be subject to the non-perturbative effect of EPs by maximizing wave-EP power transfer. In linear stage, EPs induce evident mode structure and frequency shifts; meanwhile, RSAE saturates by radial decoupling with resonant EPs due to weak magnetic shear, and gives rise to global EP convective transport and non-adiabatic frequency chirping. The spatiotemporal scales of phase space wave-EP interactions are characterized by the perpendicular wavelength and wave-particle trapping time. The simulations provide insights into general as well as specific features of RSAE spectra and EP transport from experimental observations, and illustrate the fundamental physics of wave-EP resonant interaction with the interplay of magnetic geometry, plasma non-uniformity and non-perturbative EPs., Comment: 36 pages, 21 figures

Zero frequency zonal flow (ZFZF) excitation by trapped energetic electron driven beta-induced Alfven eigenmode (eBAE) is investigated using nonlinear gyrokinetic theory. It is found that, during the linear growth stage of eBAE, resonant energetic electrons (EEs) not only effectively drive eBAE unstable, but also contribute to the nonlinear coupling, leading to ZFZF excitation. The trapped EE contribution to ZFZF generation is dominated by EE responses to eBAE in the ideal region, and is comparable to thermal plasma contribution to Reynolds and Maxwell stresses., Comment: submitted to Plasma Physics and Controlled Fusion (2020)

Nonlinear generation of high frequency mode (HFM) by toroidal Alfven eigenmode (TAE) observed in HL-2A tokamak is analyzed using nonlinear gyrokinetic theory. It is found that, the HFM can be dominated by $|nq-m|=1$ perturbations with predominantly ideal magnetohydrodynamic if the two primary TAEs are co-propagating; while the HFM can be characterized by $nq-m=0$ electrostatic perturbations if the two primary TAEs are counter-propagating. Here, $n$ and $m$ are respectively the toroidal and poloidal mode numbers, and $q$ is the safety factor. Half-metallic Heusler alloys are attracting considerable attention because of their unique half-metallic band structures which exhibit high spin polarization and yield huge magnetoresistance ratios. Besides serving as ferromagnetic electrodes, Heusler alloys also have the potential to host spin-charge conversion which has been recently demonstrated in other ferromagnetic metals. Here, we report on the spin-charge conversion effect in the prototypical Heusler alloy NiMnSb. Spin currents were injected from Y3Fe5O12 into NiMnSb films by spin pumping, and then the spin currents were converted to charge currents via spin-orbit interactions. Interestingly, an unusual charge signal was observed with a sign change at low temperature, which can be manipulated by film thickness and ordering structure. It is found that the spin-charge conversion has two contributions. First, the interfacial contribution causes a negative voltage signal, which is almost constant versus temperature. The second contribution is temperature dependent because it is dominated by minority states due to thermally excited magnons in the bulk part of the film. Spontaneous nonlinear excitation of geodesic acoustic mode (GAM) by toroidal Alfv\'en eigenmode (TAE) is investigated using nonlinear gyrokinetic theory. It is found that, the nonlinear decay process depends on thermal ion \beta value. Here, \beta is the plasma thermal to magnetic pressure ratio. In the low-\beta limit, TAE decays into a GAM and a lower TAE sideband in the toroidicity induced shear Alfv\'en wave continuous spectrum gap; while in the high-\beta limit, TAE decays into a GAM and a propagating kinetic TAE in the continuum. Both cases are investigated for the spontaneous decay conditions. The nonlinear saturation levels of both GAM and daughter wave are derived. Gyrokinetic theory of nonlinear mode coupling as a mechanism for toroidal Alfven eigenmode (TAE) saturation in the fusion plasma related parameter regime is presented, including 1) para- metric decay of TAE into lower kinetic TAE (LKTAE) and geodesic acoustic mode (GAM), and 2) enhanced TAE coupling to shear Alfven wave (SAW) continuum via ion induced scattering. Nonlinear saturation of toroidal Alfven eigenmode (TAE) via ion induced scatterings is investigated in the short-wavelength gyrokinetic regime. It is found that the nonlinear evolution depends on the thermal ion \b{eta} value. Here, \b{eta} is the plasma thermal to magnetic pressure ratio. Both the saturation levels and associated energetic-particle transport coefficients are derived and estimated correspondingly.

Following the analysis on linear spectra of shear Alfv\'en fluctuations excited by energetic particles (EPs) in the Divertor Tokamak Test (DTT) facility plasmas [T. Wang et al., Phys. Plasmas 25, 062509 (2018)], in this work, nonlinear dynamics of the corresponding mode saturation and the fluctuation induced EP transport is studied by hybrid magnetohydrodynamic-gyrokinetic simulations. For the reversed shear Alfv\'en eigenmode driven by magnetically trapped EP precession resonance in the central core region of DTT plasmas, the saturation is mainly due to radial decoupling of resonant trapped EPs. Consistent with the wave-EP resonance structure, EP transport occurs in a similar scale to the mode width. On the other hand, passing EP transport is analyzed in detail for toroidal Alfv\'en eigenmode in the outer core region, with mode drive from both passing and trapped EPs. It is shown that passing EPs experience only weak redistributions in the weakly unstable case; and the transport extends to meso-scale diffusion in the strongly unstable case, due to orbit stochasticity induced by resonance overlap. Here, weakly/strongly unstable regime is determined by Chirikov condition for resonance overlap. This work then further illuminates rich and diverse nonlinear EP dynamics related to burning plasma studies, and the capability of DTT to address these key physics., Comment: 32 pages, 20 figures

Colossal magnetoresistance (CMR) refers to a large change in electrical conductivity induced by a magnetic field in the vicinity of a metal-insulator transition and has inspired extensive studies for decades\cite{Ramirez1997, Tokura2006}. Here we demonstrate an analogous spin effect near the N\'eel temperature $T_{\rm{N}}$=296 K of the antiferromagnetic insulator \CrO. Using a yttrium iron garnet \YIG/\CrO/Pt trilayer, we injected a spin current from the YIG into the \CrO layer, and collected via the inverse spin Hall effect the signal transmitted in the heavy metal Pt. We observed a change by two orders of magnitude in the transmitted spin current within 14 K of the N\'eel temperature. This transition between spin conducting and nonconducting states could be also modulated by a magnetic field in isothermal conditions. This effect, that we term spin colossal magnetoresistance (SCMR), has the potential to simplify the design of fundamental spintronics components, for instance enabling the realization of spin current switches or spin-current based memories.

For prospective spintronics devices based on the propagation of pure spin currents, antiferromagnets are an interesting class of materials that potentially entail a number of advantages as compared to ferromagnets. Here, we present a detailed theoretical study of magnonic spin current transport in ferromagnetic-antiferromagnetic multilayers by using atomistic spin dynamics simulations. The relevant length scales of magnonic spin transport in antiferromagnets are determined. We demonstrate the transfer of angular momentum from a ferromagnet into an antiferromagnet due to the excitation of only one magnon branch in the antiferromagnet. As an experimental system, we ascertain the transport across an antiferromagnet in YIG$|$Ir$_{20}$Mn$_{80}|$Pt heterostructures. We determine the spin transport signals for spin currents generated in the YIG by the spin Seebeck effect and compare to measurements of the spin Hall magnetoresistance in the heterostructure stack. Geodesic acoustic modes (GAM) are oscillating zonal structures unique to toroidal plasmas, and have been extensively studied in the past decades due to their potential capabilities of regulating microscopic turbulences and associated anomalous transport. This article reviews linear and nonlinear theories of GAM; with emphases on kinetic treatment, system nonuniformity and realistic magnetic geometry, in order to reflect the realistic experimental conditions. Specifically, in the linear physics, the resonant wave-particle interactions are discussed, with the application to resonant excitation by energetic particles (EPs). The theory of EP-induced GAM (EGAM) is applied to realistic devices for the interpretation of experimental observations, and global effects due to coupling to GAM continuum are also discussed. Meanwhile, in the nonlinear physics, the spontaneous GAM excitation by microscale turbulences is reviewed, including the effects of various system nonuniformities. A unified theoretical framework of GAM/EGAM is then constructed based on our present understandings. The first-principle-based GAM/EGAM theories reviewed here, thus, provide the tools needed for the understanding and interpretation of experimental/numerical results., Comment: Submitted to Plasma Science and Technology. 27 pages, 19 figures
