The article discusses how the Chinese people interpret the propaganda slogan Harmonious Society promoted in communist China. The harmonious society concept was initially raised by the Hu-Wen administration at the Tenth Annual Conference of the Congress of the Chinese National People in March 2005. It is customary in the country that for every official slogan, the people will have another version with a different interpretation.

The article reports on the online survey initiated by the web portal NETEASE on whether or not mainlanders would choose to be a Chinese national in their next life. More than 10,000 persons had responded with 64 percent showing that they would not want to be Chinese. The authorities in China then shut down the site. Senior editors Tang Yan and Liu Xianghui were fired after the online survey.
