12. Influence of smoking on vitamin E status during the third trimester of pregnancy and on breast-milk tocopherol concentrations in Spanish women

Abstract

Concentrations of antioxidants in breast milk probably define the degree of protection it can offer against peroxidation. The aim of the present investigation was to determine the differences in vitamin E status of Spanish women smokers and nonsmokers in their third trimester of pregnancy and the concentrations of tocopherol in their milk. Vitamin E intake was determined during the third trimester of pregnancy by using a 5-d dietary record (including a Sunday) and by recording the quantities provided by supplements. HPLC was used to determine vitamin E concentrations in subjects' serum during the third trimester, in transitional breast milk on days 13-14 of lactation, and in mature breast milk on day 40 of lactation. Subjects also answered a questionnaire about their smoking habits during pregnancy. Subjects were grouped as nonsmokers (71.9%; n = 41) or smokers (28.1%; n = 16). Although vitamin E intake was somewhat greater in nonsmokers, the difference was not significant. Ratios of vitamin E to polyunsaturated fatty acids were practically the same in both groups. The use of vitamin E supplements was limited and did not modify the results of the study. No significant differences in these serum indexes were found between smokers and nonsmokers, and no subject had deficient serum vitamin E concentrations. However, vitamin E concentrations in mature milk were significantly lower in smokers than in nonsmokers. Although it is already known that maternal smoking favors peroxidation events in newborns, if the concentration of antioxidants (vitamin E) in smokers' breast milk is also lower, it might aggravate the peroxidation problems of their newborns. 13. Dietary intake and cognitive function in a group of elderly people

Abstract

Associations between dietary intake and cognitive performance were examined in 260 elderly people aged 65-90 y who were free of significant cognitive impairment. Dietary intake was monitored with a weighed-food record for 7 consecutive days. The subjects' cognitive capacity was tested by using Folstein et al's Mini-Mental State Examination (MMSE) and Pfeiffer's Mental Status Questionnaire (PMSQ). Subjects with adequate MMSE results ([is greater than or equal to] 28 points) had lower intakes of monounsaturated fatty acids, saturated fatty acids, and cholesterol, and higher intakes of total food, fruit, carbohydrate, thiamine, folate, and vitamin C compared with those with less satisfactory results. Subjects who made no errors on the PMSQ had greater intakes of total food, vegetables, fruit, carbohydrate, fiber, folate, vitamin C, ,13-carotene, iron, and zinc, and lower intakes of saturated fatty acids compared with those who made errors. Our results agree with those of other authors indicating that intakes of different nutrients or the consumption of a more satisfactory global diet is associated with better cognitive function in the elderly. However, more research is required to determine whether differences in intake of a particular nutrient are the result of or a conditioning factor for incipient impaired cognition. Unmeasured confounding factors may also affect both dietary intake and risk of cognitive impairment. A diet with less fat, saturated fat, and cholesterol, and more carbohydrate, fiber, vitamins (especially folate, vitamins C and E, and [Beta]-carotenes), and minerals (iron and zinc) may be advisable not only to improve the general health of the elderly but also to improve cognitive function.

Abstract

Background: Delafloxacin is an investigational anionic fluoroquinolone in development for oral or intravenous administration for the treatment of infections caused by Gram-positive (including MRSA), Gram-negative, atypical and anaerobic organisms.Objectives: To establish the non-inferiority of delafloxacin compared with vancomycin plus aztreonam for the treatment of acute bacterial skin and skin structure infections and to compare the safety of the two antimicrobials.Patients and Methods: A Phase 3, multicentre, randomized, double-blind, active-controlled study with 660 patients compared delafloxacin 300 mg or vancomycin 15 mg/kg plus aztreonam 2 g each administered twice daily intravenously for 5-14 days. Non-inferiority was evaluated by objective response (≥20% erythema reduction) at 48-72 h after initiation of study drug, investigator subjective assessment of outcome and microbiological responses. Clinical Trials Registration: NCT01811732. EudraCT number: 2012-001767-71.Results: In the ITT analysis set, the objective response was 78.2% in the delafloxacin arm and 80.9% in the vancomycin/aztreonam arm (mean treatment difference, -2.6%; 95% CI, -8.78% to 3.57%). Investigator-assessed cure was similar between the two groups at follow-up (52.0% versus 50.5%) and late follow-up (70.4% versus 66.6%). Bacterial eradication of MRSA was 100% and 98.5% in the delafloxacin group and the vancomycin/aztreonam group, respectively. Frequency of treatment-emergent adverse events in the delafloxacin and vancomycin/aztreonam groups was similar. Treatment-emergent adverse events leading to study drug discontinuation were higher in the vancomycin/aztreonam group compared with the delafloxacin group (4.3% versus 0.9%).Conclusions: Delafloxacin, an anionic fluoroquinolone, was statistically non-inferior to vancomycin/aztreonam at 48-72 h following the start of therapy and was well tolerated as monotherapy in the treatment of acute bacterial skin and skin structure infections. Abstract

Sucrose thermal degradation is an important reaction in the food industry. When in concentrated and neutral solutions, pure sucrose presents a lag phase in the reaction. This work aimed at: (i) modelling sucrose thermal degradation autocatalytic behaviour and (ii) studying the concentration and temperature effects on kinetic parameters. Isothermal experiments were conducted at temperatures ranging from 100 to 180 C, using solutions with varying water content (3.58–30.03 (% w/w)). The logistic and Gompertz sigmoidal equations were modified and reparameterised, in order to describe degradation behaviour with kinetic parameters with physical meaning (maximum reaction rate, kmax, and lag time, k). In both models these parameters presented an Arrhenius type dependence on temperature. Following a mixed model effect methodology, the concentration dependence was observed on the Arrhenius parameters. This concentration effect was included in the proposed kinetic models, which were able to successfully describe experimental data.

Abstract

The present work deals with the application of the random-walk model, proposed by Arkhipov and Bässler, to describe the viscosity dependence on temperature. Data obtained for sucrose solutions were used to assess the validity of the random-walk approach and the normality of the Density of Possible Metastable States (DPMS). Good results for the fitting of the proposed models were found for fragile liquids. Strong liquids showed poor results and require more investigation.

Abstract

The objective of this work was to study the influence of freezing on the visco-elastic properties of strawberries. Food structure plays an important role in food quality and functionality. It is important for the consumers to find an identical sensation when they eat a fresh strawberry and when the strawberry is defrosted. The visco-elastic properties of a food product are an indirect measure of its structure. Experimental measurements of these properties may correlate to changes on the physical attributes of the product. In this work, a dynamic mechanical analyser was used to assess changes on loss (E’’) and storage (E’) modulus, applying a compressive test with a Ø1.5 cm parallel plate geometry. Strawberries were acquired in a local market and frozen in a blast and fluidized bed freezer at –30 ºC for 1 hour. Samples were stored at –30 ºC in freezing chambers. Analyses were performed on fresh strawberries, after freezing and during storage. The samples were cut in small cylinders (1.5cm x 1.5cm) and left to relax during 1 hour at room temperature. Preliminary tests were performed in order to evaluate the linear visco-elastic region and the loss and storage modulus were determined. A dynamic frequency sweep test was also performed. Results showed that the behaviour of fresh strawberry sample varies significantly when compared with a defrosted sample. The influence of the storage still cannot be evaluated and is currently under study. Overall, it can be concluded that the freezing process greatly influenced the visco-elastic properties of the strawberries.

Abstract

A presente comunicação centra-se na apresentação à comunidade científica de um Projecto de investigação em Educação que tem como finalidade produzir contributos para o Ensino Básico, no âmbito do que se designa como uma Nova Cultura da Água. Com esta iniciativa pretendemos não só alertar para a pertinência e importância de estudos em ordem a uma temática cada vez mais emergente, mas também recolher contributos significativos de uma comunidade mais alargada. O referido projecto centra-se pois no bem Água. Começará por procurar conhecer melhor como ele é evocado e tratado no Ensino Básico. Destina-se a aprofundar e promover teorias, conhecimentos, competências, valores, atitudes e práticas que potenciem o bom uso e a protecção daquele bem, e de um modo mais geral uma alteração de posturas culturais e mesmo civilizacionais. Fá-lo-á segundo perspectivas científicas, pedagógicas, didácticas e sociais em parte já construídas e em parte a construir, e que justificadamente se considerem adequadas. O Projecto assume estar à partida marcado por saberes, perspectivas, ideais, dilemas e objectivos dos elementos da equipa do Projecto e por outras visões que, globalmente e de um modo aproximativo, aglomeramos sob a designação Nova Cultura da Água. Simultaneamente, assume que pretende contribuir para que tal Nova Cultura da Água seja mais bem compreendida e especificada, e em particular para que ela seja mais enriquecida com contributos portugueses. O âmbito central de intervenção do Projecto é o Ensino Básico, mas desde logo isso implica a sua intersecção com a Formação (Inicial e Contínua) de Professores, e portanto com o Ensino Superior. Além disso, pela natureza do tema, do bem, em estudo, o Projecto intersecta-se também com os mundos das Ciências e das Tecnologias. Intersecta-se também com a Sociedade em geral, e designadamente com a formação para a cidadania de cidadão portugueses que são também cidadãos da Península Ibérica, da Europa e do Mundo. O Projecto terá pois múltiplas incidências e mesmo, previsivelmente, contributos de vários tipos e âmbitos, designadamente a nível de divulgação científica e a um nível pedagógico geral. Mas é essencialmente um Projecto do âmbito da Didáctica. Tem a sua focagem na Escola, portanto em ambientes de ensino e aprendizagem formais, e incide sobre meios e métodos relacionados com ambientes de aula (em sentido lato).

Abstract

The present paper describes a data acquisition wearable device for hand rehabilitation. The main goal of this glove is to be used by patients with hand movement impairment. It has position sensors to measure the bending of synovial joints and sensors to measure the fingertip contact pressure. There is a coin motor and a LED placed on each finger to produce a vibratory and visual stimulus. The glove also tracks the hand rotation and translation using a MPU (Motion Processing Unit) that contains an accelerometer and a gyroscope. A graphical application for an HMI module was developed in order to create rehabilitation game-like exercises where sensor data can be logged for further analysis by a therapist. The wearable device electronic hardware comprises a Glove module and an HMI module that communicate through SPI protocol (Serial Peripheral Interface). The wearable device supports USB connection to send data to a computer or to be used as a peripheral device in virtual or augmented reality applications. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This work describes the design and testing of a 1 degree of freedom (DOF) haptic device, for interaction with virtual reality (VR) applications. This device was designed so that it could to be easily assembled by anyone at a reduced price. Instructions for device assembly, as well as some VR applications are available online. Abstract

This work describes the development of an embedded electronic-based monitoring system suitable for cold-storage electrical equipment. The system uses a touchscreen and provides sensors for temperature, relative humidity, electric power consumption and detection of door position. To monitor the electric power, a special purpose current sensor was developed and calibrated. The system adopts a modular architecture using cabled and wireless communications, making it suitable for integration in other logging and alarm generation systems.
