Abstract: Turbidity is a commonly used indicator of water quality in continental and marine waters and is mostly caused by suspended and colloidal particles such as organic and inorganic particles. Many methods are available for the measurement of turbidity, ranging from the Secchi disk to infrared light-based benchtop or in situ turbidimeters as well as acoustic methods. The operational methodologies of the large majority of turbidity instruments involve the physics of light scattering and absorption by suspended particles when light is passed through a sample. As such, in the case of in situ monitoring in water bodies, the measurement of turbidity is highly influenced by external light and biofouling. Our motivation for this project is to propose an open-source, low-cost in situ turbidity sensor with a suitable sensitivity and operating range to operate in low-to-medium-turbidity natural waters. This prototype device combines two angular photodetectors and two infrared light sources with different positions, resulting in two different types of light detection, namely nephelometric (i.e., scattering) and attenuation light, according to the ISO 7027 method. The mechanical design involves 3D-printed parts by stereolithography, which are compatible with commercially available waterproof enclosures, thus ensuring easy integration for future users. An effort was made to rely on mostly off-the-shelf electronic components to encourage replication of the system, with the use of a highly integrated photometric front-end commonly used in portable photoplethysmography systems. The sensor was tested in laboratory conditions against a commercial benchtop turbidimeter with Formazin standards. The monitoring results were analyzed, obtaining a linear trendline from 0 to 50 Nephelometric Turbidity Unit (NTU) and an accuracy of +/−0.4 NTU in the 0 to 10 NTU range with a response time of less than 100 ms.

Abstract: Dysregulations of lipid metabolism in the liver may trigger steatosis progression, leading to potentially severe clinical consequences such as nonalcoholic fatty liver diseases (NAFLDs). Molecular mechanisms underlying liver lipogenesis are very complex and fine-tuned by chromatin dynamics and multiple key transcription factors. Here, we demonstrate that the nuclear factor HMGB1 acts as a strong repressor of liver lipogenesis. Mice with liver-specific Hmgb1 deficiency display exacerbated liver steatosis, while Hmgb1-overexpressing mice exhibited a protection from fatty liver progression when subjected to nutritional stress. Global transcriptome and functional analysis revealed that the deletion of Hmgb1 gene enhances LXRα and PPARγ activity. HMGB1 repression is not mediated through nucleosome landscape reorganization but rather via a preferential DNA occupation in a region carrying genes regulated by LXRα and PPARγ. Together, these findings suggest that hepatocellular HMGB1 protects from liver steatosis development. HMGB1 may constitute a new attractive option to therapeutically target the LXRα-PPARγ axis during NAFLD. Abstract: BackgroundTo limit the spread of COVID-19, a strict lockdown was imposed in France between March and May 2020. Mobility limitations and closure of non-essential public places (restaurants, open-air markets, etc.) affected peoples' food environment (FE) and thus their food purchasing practices (FPPs). This study aimed to explore changes in FPPs of French households during lockdown and associations with individual and environmental factors.MethodsIn April of 2020 households from the Mont'Panier cross-sectional study (n = 306), a quota sampling survey conducted in the south of France, were asked to complete an online questionnaire about their FPPs during lockdown and related factors, including perceived FE (distance to closest general food store, perception of increased food prices, etc.). Objective FE (presence, number, proximity, and density of food outlets) was assessed around participant's home using a geographical information system. Multiple correspondence analysis based on changes in frequency of use and quantity of food purchased by food outlet, followed by a hierarchical cluster analysis, resulted in the identification of clusters. Logistic regression models were performed to assess associations between identified clusters and household's sociodemographic characteristics, perceived, and objective FE.ResultsFive clusters were identified. Cluster “Supermarket” (38% of the total sample), in which households reduced frequency of trips, but increased quantity bought in supermarkets during lockdown, was associated with lower incomes and the perception of increased food prices. Cluster “E-supermarket” (12%), in which households increased online food shopping with pickup at supermarket, was associated with higher incomes. Cluster “Diversified” (22%), made up of households who reduced frequency of trips to diverse food outlet types, was associated with the perception of increased food prices. Cluster “Organic Food Store” (20%), in which households did not change frequency of trips, nor quantity purchased in organic food stores, was associated with being older (35–50 y vs. ConclusionThis study highlighted diverse changes in FPPs during lockdown and overall more significant associations with perceived than with objective FE indicators.

Abstract: This Collective Research Programme is an interdisciplinary investigation into the medieval silver mining enterprises of the Minier valley (Aveyron department, Viala-du-Tarn commune). Between the 12th and 15th centuries, at least, this valley was subject to discontinuous exploitation of polymetallic deposits (copper, lead, zinc, silver) - essentially to produce lead and silver. To explore their dynamics and remains, the RCP has brought together researchers from complementary disciplines and backgrounds since 2020: archaeologists, historians, art historians, geologists and geochemists. The 2022 campaign has extended the research begun in 2021, particularly in the field, and has made it possible to open new files. The editing of medieval texts concerning production having been completed, the research was directed towards land sources in order to identify the main lines of medieval occupation of the valley. The valley is largely occupied and cultivated, which shows that mining production was only a part of its economy. Finally, the existence of a land register drawn up in 1648 makes it possible to reconstitute the parcel of land of the village of Le Minier, which will make it possible to refine the more fragmentary information from the middle of the 14th century, as well as to draw up a consolidated map of the ancient toponyms of the valley. A first thematic study focused on the medieval mills has finally revealed 8 artifacts in the valley, 2 of which have a definite mineralurgical function and 1 of which is very probable. In the field, the geochemical survey of the valley was completed. The necessary additions were made and interpolations of Pb and Zn contents were proposed. The integration of the plots of land of the Rode mill into these surveys will also allow the 2022 results to be compared with those of the survey carried out during the 2020 campaign and thus develop a reflective view of the methods. Auger coring was also attempted in several of the concentrations identified in 2021, but the drought made the operation difficult. In parallel, the geological and geological study of the Cantamerle mine was completed, and archaeological excavations concerned two of the zones that had been surveyed in 2021: the Saliège mine (zone 4) and the Voltes fields and pits (zone 6). In the case of the Saliège mine, the excavation continued until it came across a rising site, which had probably been converted into a shaft. At Les Voltes, the sunken pit sounded in 2021 was widened until a trench towards the river appeared, while the second sunken pit was excavated, revealing what may have been a section of an open trench filled in by stope. The field where the workshops are located was excavated much more extensively: at least 6 new workshops were identified. Their soils have been geochemically recorded with pXrf determinations carried out in situ and samples taken for further analysis. Finally, the architectural studies continued, still focusing on the double houses in the centre of Le Minier, which are almost complete. With regard to the dissemination of production, a new corpus of several hundred coins from Cahors and Rodez preserved at the CCE in Toulouse was integrated into the study with preliminary pXrf analyses, while complementary LA-ICP-MS analyses were carried out on some fifteen coins from the BnF identified in 2021. The identification of trace elements is the first objective, in order to compare them with the minerals mined in the Minier valley. Une vallée largement occupée et cultivée en ressort, ce qui montre que la production minière ne constituait qu’une part de son économie. Enfin, l’existence d’un cadastre établi en 1648 permet de reconstituer le parcellaire du village du Minier, ce qui permettra d’affiner celui de la moitié du XIVe siècle aux informations plus fragmentaires, comme d’établir une carte consolidée des toponymes anciens de la vallée. Une première étude thématique focalisée sur les moulins médiévaux a enfin mis en évidence 8 artifices dans la vallée, dont 2 avec une fonction minéralurgique assurée et 1 très probable. Sur le terrain, la prospection géochimique de la vallée a été achevée. Les compléments nécessaires ont été effectués et des interpolations des teneurs en Pb, Zn, proposées. L’intégration des parcelles du moulin de la Rode à ces relevés permet par ailleurs de confronter les résultats 2022 à ceux de la prospection réalisée durant la campagne 2020 et ainsi développer un regard réflexif sur les méthodes. Des carottages à la tarière ont aussi été tentés dans plusieurs des concentrations identifiées en 2021, mais la sécheresse a rendu l’opération difficile. En parallèle, l’étude géologique et gitologique de la mine de Cantamerle a pu être menée à bien, et les fouilles archéologiques ont concerné deux des zones qui avaient été sondées en 2021 : la mine de la Saliège (zone 4) ainsi que les champs et les fontis des Voltes (zone 6). S’agissant de la Saliège, la désobstruction s’est poursuivie jusqu’à la rencontre d’un chantier montant, vraisemblablement aménagé en puits. Aux Voltes, le fontis sondé en 2021 a été élargi jusqu’à voir apparaître une tranchée vers la rivière, tandis que le second fontis a été fouillé, mettant au jour ce qui pourrait être une section d’une tranchée à ciel ouvert comblée par des haldes. Le champ où se trouvent les ateliers a été fouillé bien plus largement : au moins 6 nouveaux ateliers ont été reconnus. Leurs sols ont fait l’objet d’un enregistrement géochimique avec des dosages pXrf réalisés in situ et des prélèvements qui feront l’objet d’analyses complémentaires. Les études architecturales se sont enfin poursuivies, toujours focalisées sur les maisons doubles au centre du Minier, presque achevées. S’agissant de la diffusion de la production, un nouveau corpus de plusieurs centaines de monnaies de cahors et de Rodez conservées au CCE de Toulouse a été intégré à la réflexion avec des analyses préliminaires au pXrf, tandis que des analyses complémentaires en LA-ICP-MS ont été effectuées sur une quinzaine de monnaies de la BnF identifiées en 2021. L’identification des éléments traces est le premier objectif, afin de les confronter avec les minerais exploités dans la vallée du Minier. Abstract: International audience; In hepatocytes, peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor α (PPARα) orchestrates a genomic and metabolic response required for homeostasis during fasting. This includes the biosynthesis of ketone bodies and of fibroblast growth factor 21 (FGF21). Here we show that in the absence of adipose triglyceride lipase (ATGL) in adipocytes, ketone body and FGF21 production is impaired upon fasting. Liver gene expression analysis highlights a set of fasting-induced genes sensitive to both ATGL deletion in adipocytes and PPARα deletion in hepatocytes. Adipose tissue lipolysis induced by activation of the β3-adrenergic receptor also triggers such PPARα-dependent responses not only in the liver but also in brown adipose tissue (BAT). Intact PPARα activity in hepatocytes is required for the cross-talk between adipose tissues and the liver during fat mobilization.

Abstract: This Collective Research Programme is an interdisciplinary investigation into the medieval silver mining enterprises in the Minier valley (Aveyron department, Viala-du-Tarn commune). Between the 12th and 15th centuries, at least, this valley was subject to discontinuous exploitation of polymetallic deposits (copper, lead, zinc, silver) - essentially to produce lead and silver. To explore their dynamics and remains, the project brings together researchers from complementary disciplines and backgrounds: archaeologists, historians, art historians, geologists and geochemists. The 2021 campaign was marked by significant progress in data acquisition and a return to the field. Archival research was continued, in particular in the notarial registers of the 14th and 15th centuries. Our topographical and toponymic knowledge of the valley is becoming more precise and will be linked to the DTM recorded by Lidar, while the decline in silver production that was assumed from the beginning of the 14th century is being confirmed. Among the acts collected, we note several sales of silver made to merchants in Millau who, at the same time, helped to finance production. In addition, the archives of the Château de Saint-Amans are beginning to be explored and contain several deeds relating to the Minier valley. In August 2021, a sounding campaign was carried out in order to carry out an archaeological diagnosis of several sectors whose interest had been observed during prospecting. Three soundings were carried out on surface remains: an ore preparation workshop at Les Voltes, which was radiocarbon dated to the 13th century, a slag dump at the Rode mill, which was part of a smelter that was radiocarbon dated to the 14th century, and the ground floor of one of the medieval houses at Le Minier. At the same time, two series of test pits were carried out in the mines, one to unblock the Saliège mine and the other to document the various structures and installations of the Arbus mine, whose operation may have begun in the 8th century, a radiocarbon dating that needs to be confirmed. Furthermore, two additional mining structures were topographed and added to the corpus. Finally, the architectural studies continued, focusing this year on the double houses in the centre of the Minier. The geochemical study of the soils and materials was greatly expanded thanks to the use of a portable X-ray fluorescence spectrometry analysis device. A large part of the valley was mapped and several surface concentrations of lead and zinc were identified. At the same time, the ores exploited in the various mines were sampled as well as the various materials rejected during the various stages of production and found in excavations (ore blocks, metal balls, slag). Finally, an initial characterisation of batches of coins minted by the Counts of Rodez was carried out with a pXRFTranslated with www.DeepL.com/Translator (free version); Ce Programme Collectif de Recherche est une enquête interdisciplinaire portant sur les entreprises argentifères médiévales de la vallée du Minier (département de l’Aveyron, commune du Viala-du-Tarn). Entre le XIIe et le XVe siècle, au moins, cette vallée fit l’objet d’exploitations discontinues de gisements polymétalliques (cuivre, plomb, zinc, argent) – essentiellement pour produire du plomb et de l’argent. Pour explorer leurs dynamiques et leurs vestiges, le PCR regroupe des chercheurs de disciplines et d’horizons complémentaires : archéologues, historiens, historiens de l’art, géologues et géochimistes. La campagne 2021 a été marquée par de riches avancées dans l’acquisition des données et un retour sur le terrain. Le dépouillement d’archives a été poursuivi, en particulier dans les registres notariaux des XIVe et XVe siècles. Notre connaissance topographique et toponymique de la vallée se précise et sera articulée avec le MNT relevé par Lidar, tandis que le déclin de la production argentifère qui était supposé à partir du début du XIVe siècle se confirme. Parmi les actes réunis, signalons plusieurs ventes d’argent faites à des marchands de Millau qui, en même temps, contribuaient à financer la production. Par ailleurs, le fonds d’archives du château de Saint-Amans commence à être exploré et contient plusieurs actes en relation avec la vallée du Minier. Au mois d’août 2021, une campagne de sondage a été réalisée afin de réaliser un diagnostic archéologique de plusieurs secteurs dont l’intérêt avait été observé en prospection. Trois sondages ont été réalisés sur des vestiges de surface : un atelier de préparation du minerai aux Voltes qui a été par radiocarbone du XIIIe siècle, un épandage de scories au moulin de la Rode, issu d’une fonderie dont le fonctionnement a été daté au XIVe siècle par radiocarbone et le rez-de-chaussée d’une des maisons médiévales du Minier. En parallèle, deux séries de sondages ont été effectuées dans des mines, l’une pour désobstruer la mine de la Saliège et l’autre pour documenter les différents ouvrages et aménagements de la mine d’Arbus, dont l’exploitation a pu commencer au VIIIe siècle, datation radiocarbone qu’il faudra confirmer. Par ailleurs, deux ouvrages miniers supplémentaires ont été topographiés et ajoutées au corpus. Les études architecturales se sont enfin poursuivies, focalisées cette année sur les maisons doubles au centre du Minier. L’étude géochimique des sols et des matériaux s’est largement développée grâce à l’emploi d’un appareil portable d’analyse par spectrométrie de fluorescence X. Une large part de la vallée a pu être cartographiée et plusieurs concentrations de surface en plomb et zinc mises en évidence. Dans le même temps, les minerais exploités dans les différentes mines ont été échantillonnés ainsi que les divers matériaux rejetés à mesure des étapes de la production et retrouvés en fouille (blocs de minerais, billes de métaux, scories). Abstract: International audience; The Monitoring Nitrous Oxide Sources (MIN2OS) satellite project aims at monitoring global-scale nitrous oxide (N2O) sources by retrieving N2O surface fluxes from the inversion of space-borne N2O measurements that are sensitive to the lowermost atmospheric layers under favorable conditions. MIN2OS will provide emission estimates of N2O at a horizontal resolution of 1° × 1° on the global scale and 10 × 10 km2 on the regional scale on a weekly to monthly basis depending on the application (e.g., agriculture, national inventories, policy, scientific research). Our novel approach is based on the development of: 1) a space-borne instrument operating in the Thermal InfraRed domain providing, in clear sky conditions, N2O mixing ratio in the lowermost atmosphere (900 hPa) under favorable conditions (summer daytime) over land and under favorable and unfavorable (winter nighttime) conditions over the ocean and 2) an atmospheric inversion framework to estimate N2O surface fluxes from the atmospheric satellite observations. After studying three N2O spectral bands (B1 at 1240–1350 cm−1, B2 at 2150–2260 cm−1 and B3 at 2400–2600 cm−1), a new TIR instrument will be developed, centered at 1250–1330 cm−1, with a resolution of 0.125 cm−1, a Full Width at Half Maximum of 0.25 cm−1 and a swath of 300 km. To optimally constrain the retrieval of N2O vertical profiles, the instrument will be on-board a platform at ~830 km altitude in a sun-synchronous orbit crossing the Equator in descending node at 09:30 local time in synergy with two other platforms (Metop-SG and Sentinel-2 NG) expected to fly in 2031–32 aiming at detecting surface properties, agricultural information on the field scale and vertical profiles of atmospheric constituents and temperature. The lifetime of the MIN2OS project would be 4–5 years to study the interannual variability of N2O surface fluxes. The spectral noise can be decreased by at least a factor of 5 compared to the lowest noise accessible to date with the Infrared Atmospheric Sounding Interferometer-New Generation (IASI-NG) mission. The N2O total error is expected to be less than ~1% (~3 ppbv) along the vertical. The preliminary design of the MIN2OS project results in a small instrument (payload of 90 kg, volume of 1200 × 600 × 300 mm3) with, in addition to the spectrometer, a wide field and 1-km resolution imager for cloud detection. The instruments could be hosted on a small platform, the whole satellite being largely compatible with a dual launch on VEGA-C. The MIN2OS project has been submitted to the European Space Agency Earth Explorer 11 mission ideas.

Abstract: International audience; A stereolithographic 3D printing method was used to fabricate spin crossover–polymer composite materials with various shapes and sizes (up to several cm). The thermomechanical properties of the polymer and the stiumuli-responsive properties of the filler are preserved in the composite – affording for a new approach of 4D printing.

Abstract: International audience; Southern France, like the rest of the world, is facing the emergence of diseases affecting plants, animals and humans, of which causative agents (viruses, parasites, bacteria) are transmitted by arthropod vectors. Global changes are accelerating the emergence and spread of these diseases. After presenting some examples related to vectors of yellow fever and dengue viruses (Aedes aegypti and Ae. albopictus), Crimean-Congo hemorrhagic fever (Hyalomma marginatum), Bluetongue (Culicoides sp.), and the phytopathogen Xylella fastidiosa (Hemiptera spp.), we will discuss what are the intrinsic and extrinsic factors that make an arthropod a vector in a given place and at a given time. We also propose some thoughts regarding these emergences, possible scenarios for their evolution and some recommendations for the future.; Le sud de la France, comme le reste du monde, est confronté à l’émergence de maladies affectant les plantes, les animaux et les populations humaines, dont les agents étiologiques (virus, parasites, bactéries) sont transmis par des arthropodes vecteurs. Les changements globaux auxquels nous faisons face accélèrent l’apparition et la diffusion de ces pathologies. Après avoir pris quelques exemples concernant les vecteurs des virus de la fièvre jaune et de la dengue (Aedes aegypti et Ae. albopictus), de la fièvre de Crimée-Congo (Hyalomma marginatum), de la fièvre catarrhale ovine (Culicoides sp.) et de la bactérie phytopathogène Xylella fastidiosa (Hemiptera spp.), nous verrons quels sont les facteurs intrinsèques et extrinsèques qui font qu’un arthropode devient un vecteur en un lieu et à un moment donné. Nous proposons des pistes de réflexion sur ces émergences et le possible devenir des maladies transmises par arthropodes. Nous concluons par quelques recommandations pour mieux anticiper les émergences.

Abstract: CO2 transformations using a one-pot two-step method are presented herein. The purpose of the method is to give access to a variety of value-added products and notably to generate chiral carbon centers. The crucial first step consists in the selective double hydroboration of CO2 catalyzed by an iron hydride complex. The product obtained with this 4 e(-) reduction is a rare bis(boryl)acetal, compound 1, which is subjected in situ to three different reactions in a second step. The first reaction concerns a condensation reaction with (diisopropyl)phenylamine affording the corresponding imine 2. In the second and third reaction, intermediate 1 reacts with triazol-5-ylidene (Enders' carbene) to afford compounds 3 or 4, depending on the reaction conditions. In both compounds, C-C bonds are formed, and chiral centers are generated from CO2 as the only source of carbon. Compound 4 exhibits two chiral centers obtained in a diastereoselective manner in a formose-type mechanism. We proved that the remaining boryl fragment plays a key role in this unprecedented stereocontrol. The interest of the method stands on the reactive and versatile nature of 1, giving rise to various complex molecules from a single intermediate. The complexity of a two-step method is compensated by the overall short reaction time (2 h for the larger reaction time), and mild reaction conditions (25 degrees C to 80 degrees C and 1 to 3 atm of CO2).

Abstract: Background: In Acute Myeloid Leukemia (AML), a complete response to chemotherapy is usually obtained after conventional chemotherapy but overall patient survival is poor due to highly frequent relapses. As opposed to chronic myeloid leukemia, B lymphoma or multiple myeloma, AML is one of the rare malignant hemopathies the therapy of which has not significantly improved during the past 30 years despite intense research efforts. One promising approach is to determine metabolic dependencies in AML cells. Moreover, two key metabolic enzymes, isocitrate dehydrogenases (IDH1/2), are mutated in more than 15% of AML patient, reinforcing the interest in studying metabolic reprogramming, in particular in this subgroup of patients. Methods: Using a multi-omics approach combining proteomics, lipidomics, and isotopic profiling of [U-13C] glucose and [U-13C] glutamine cultures with more classical biochemical analyses, we studied the impact of the IDH1 R132H mutation in AML cells on lipid biosynthesis. Results: Global proteomic and lipidomic approaches showed a dysregulation of lipid metabolism, especially an increase of phosphatidylinositol, sphingolipids (especially few species of ceramide, sphingosine, and sphinganine), free cholesterol and monounsaturated fatty acids in IDH1 mutant cells. Isotopic profiling of fatty acids revealed that higher lipid anabolism in IDH1 mutant cells corroborated with an increase in lipogenesis fluxes. Conclusions: This integrative approach was efficient to gain insight into metabolism and dynamics of lipid species in leukemic cells. Therefore, we have determined that lipid anabolism is strongly reprogrammed in IDH1 mutant AML cells with a crucial dysregulation of fatty acid metabolism and fluxes, both being mediated by 2-HG (2-Hydroxyglutarate) production.

Abstract: International audience; For a sustainable economy, biodegradable biopolymers polyhydroxyalkanoates (PHA) are desirable substitutes to petroleum-based plastics that contaminate our environment. Medium-chain-length (MCL) PHA bioplastics are particularly interesting due to their thermoplastic properties. To hamper the high cost associated to PHA production, the use of bacterial mixed cultures cultivated in open systems and using cheap resources is a promising strategy. Here, we studied the operating conditions favouring direct MCL accumulation by activated sludge, using oleic acid as a model substrate and phosphorus limitation in fed-batch bioreactors. Our results confirm the presence of PHA-accumulating organisms (PHAAO) in activated sludge able to accumulate MCL from oleic acid. A positive correlation between phosphorus (P) limitation and PHA accumulation was demonstrated, allowing up to 26% PHA/total biomass accumulation, and highlighted its negative impact on the MCL/PHA fraction in the polymer. Diversity analysis through 16S rRNA amplicon sequencing revealed a differential selection of PHAAO according to the P-limitation level. A differential behaviour for the orders Pseudomonadales and Burkholderiales at increasing P-limitation levels was revealed, with a higher abundance of the latter at high levels of P-limitation. The PHA accumulation observed in activated sludge open new perspectives for MCL-PHA production system based on P-limitation strategy applied to mixed microbial communities.

Abstract: International audience; The metabolic scaling theory (MST) predicts quasi-universal trait-size relationships in plants, characterised by a unique allometric exponent within and across large taxonomic scales. However, recent studies have identified variability in allometric relationships, without a clear understanding of the modulating role played by genetic variation and environment.Here, we investigated (1) the allometric relationships for two central traits of MST, namely total leaf area and plant growth rate, in the model species Arabidopsis thaliana, (2) the variability of plant allometries between genotypes and (3) the plastic responses of plant allometries under water deficit, high temperature and their interaction.Using a population of 120 genotypes, we found that intraspecific allometries adhered on average with MST predictions. However, a broad variability but a moderate plasticity in the allometric exponents was observed across genotypes and environments. Allometric exponents were impacted significantly, yet weakly, by water deficit, but not by high temperature. Moreover, genotypes that deviated from MST predictions exhibited more plasticity in trait-size relationships than genotypes that followed MST predictions.Our study suggests that plant allometry is genetically variable and might be related to different adaptive strategies to cope with stressing conditions. Thus, our results highlights the need of assessing trait-size relationships within species to understand the mechanisms of plant adaptation to contrasted environments.

Abstract: The prediction of water resource evolution is considered to be a major challenge for the coming century, particularly in the context of climate change and increasing demographic pressure. Water resources are directly linked to the continental water cycle, and the main processes modulating changes can be represented by global hydrological models. However, anthropogenic impacts on water resources, and in particular the effects of dams-reservoirs on river flows, are still poorly known and generally neglected in coupled land surface–river routing models. This paper presents a parameterized reservoir model, DROP (Dam-Reservoir OPeration), based on Hanasaki's scheme to compute monthly releases given inflows, water demands and the management purpose. With its significantly anthropized river basins, Spain has been chosen as a study case for which simulated outflows and water storage variations are evaluated against in situ observations over the period 1979–2014. Using a default configuration of the reservoir model, results reveal its positive contribution in representing the seasonal cycle of discharge and storage variation, specifically for large-storage capacity irrigation reservoirs. Based on a bounded version of the Nash–Sutcliffe efficiency (NSE) index, called C2M, the overall outflow representation is improved by 43 % in the median. For irrigation reservoirs, the improvement rate reaches 80 %. A comprehensive sensitivity analysis of DROP model parameters was conducted based on the performance of C2M on outflows and volumes using the Sobol method. The results show that the most influential parameter is the threshold coefficient describing the demand-controlled release level. The analysis also reveals the parameters that need to be focused on in order to improve river flow or reservoir water storage modeling by highlighting the difference in the individual effects of the parameters and their interactions depending on whether one focuses on outflows or volume mean seasonal patterns. The results of this generic reservoir scheme show promise for modeling present and future reservoir impacts on the continental hydrology within global land surface–river routing models.

Abstract: International audience; Lock-in and path-dependency are well-known concepts in economics dealing with unbalanced development of alternative options. Lock-in was studied in various sectors, considering production or consumption sides. Lock-in in academic research went little addressed. Yet, science develops through knowledge accumulation and cross-fertilisation of research topics, that could lead to similar phenomena when some topics do not sufficiently benefit from accumulation mechanisms, reducing innovation opportunities from the concerned field consequently. We introduce an original method to explore these phenomena by comparing topic trajectories in research fields according to strong or weak accumulative processes over time. We combine the concepts of ‘niche’ and ‘mainstream’ from transition studies with scientometric tools to revisit Callon’s strategic diagram with a diachronic perspective of topic clusters over time. Considering the trajectories of semantic clusters, derived from titles and authors’ keywords extracted from scholarly publications in the Web of Science, we applied our method to two competing research fields in food sciences and technology related to pulses and soya over the last 60 years worldwide. These highly interesting species for the sustainability of agrifood systems experienced unbalanced development and thus is under-debated. Our analysis confirms that food research for soya was more dynamic than for pulses: soya topic clusters revealed a stronger accumulative research path by cumulating mainstream positions while pulses research did not meet the same success. This attempt to unpack research lock-in for evaluating the competition dynamics of scientific fields over time calls for future works, by strengthening the method and testing it on other research fields.

Abstract: International audience; Our research work is being carried out within the framework of the joint research laboratory ”Inspection 4.0” between IMT Mines Albi/ICA and the company Diota specialized in the development of numerical tools for Industry 4.0. In this work, we are focused on conformity control of complex aeronautical mechanical assemblies, typically an aircraft engine at the end or in the middle of the assembly process. A 3D scanner carried by a robot arm provides acquisitions of 3D point clouds which are further processed by deep segmentation networks. Computer-Aided Design (CAD) model of the mechanical assembly to be inspected is available, which is an important asset of our approach. Our deep learning models are trained on synthetic and simulated data, generated from the CAD models. This research is a continuation of the work presented at the QCAV’2021 conference.

Abstract: International audience; The terrestrial metallic hoards of the extreme end of the Atlantic Bronze Age (BFa 3, i.e. between 950 and 800 B.C.) are characterised by particularly heterogeneous compositions and by a very strong fragmentation. Whole objects are in the minority and the numerous fragments rarely fit together. This means that some of the objects are missing and have had a different destiny from that which was fossilised in the deposits.In this study, we will focus on this missing part of the BFa 3 terrestrial hoards and we will try to estimate its mass in order to make it more tangible. This amounts to asking the question of the minimum number of objects that were necessary to constitute the original hoards and the quantity of metal that disappeared between the time when the objects were whole and the time when they were buried, many of which were fragmented on purpose. To do this, we will base ourselves on a selection of objects for which it is possible to calculate a median mass on the one hand, and on the establishment of a Minimum Number of Individuals (NMI) and a Number of Remains (NR) for each hoard studied on the other. The proposed method will be applied to several hoards originating from different regions of a large north-western quarter of France.Questioning the gaps in the terrestrial hoards and attempting to quantify them allows a better understanding of the metal masses necessary for the constitution of these Final Bronze Age ensembles. This necessarily leads, in a second phase, to the question of the fate of the unburied fragments and thus to reflect on the modalities of constitution of the hoards as well as on the temporalities of fragmentation of the objects and the disappearance of a part of them.; Les dépôts métalliques terrestres de l’extrême fin de l’âge du Bronze atlantique (BFa 3, soit entre 950 et 800 avant notre ère) sont caractérisés par des compositions particulièrement hétéroclites et par une très forte fragmentation. Les objets entiers y sont en minorité et les fragments, nombreux, recollent rarement entre eux. Cela suppose donc qu’une partie des objets est manquante et a connu une destinée différente de celle qui a été fossilisée au sein des dépôts.Dans le cadre de cette étude, nous nous intéresserons justement à cette partie manquante des dépôts terrestres du BFa 3 et nous tenterons d’en estimer partiellement la masse afin de la rendre plus tangible. Cela revient en fait à se poser la question du nombre minimum d’objets ayant été nécessaires pour constituer les dépôts à l’origine et de la quantité de métal ayant disparu entre le moment où les objets étaient entiers et le moment où ceux-ci, fragmentés volontairement pour beaucoup, ont été enfouis. Pour ce faire, nous nous baserons sur une sélection d’objets pour lesquels il est possible de calculer une masse médiane d’une part, et d’établir un nombre minimum d’individus (NMI) et un nombre de restes (NR) pour chaque dépôt étudié d’autre part. La méthode proposée sera appliquée à plusieurs dépôts originaires de différentes régions d’un large quart nord-ouest de la France.Interroger les lacunes des dépôts terrestres et tenter de les quantifier permet de mieux appréhender les masses métalliques nécessaires à la constitution de ces ensembles du Bronze final. Cela conduit nécessairement, dans un second temps, à se poser la question du devenir des fragments non enfouis et donc à réfléchir aux modalités de constitution des dépôts ainsi qu’aux temporalités de fragmentation des objets et de disparition d’une partie d’entre eux.

In this study, we focus on the coastal aquifer of Roussillon (southern France) by developing and investigating a steady-state groundwater flow model (MODFLOW 6) and calibrated with PEST++ on a Python interface (FloPy and PyEmu). Model input and boundary conditions are constrained by various scenarios of climate projections by 2080, with model results predicting the aquifer's response (and associated uncertainty) to these external forcings. Using simple assumptions of intrusion estimates, model results highlight both strong climatic and anthropogenic impacts on the water table. These include aquifer drawdowns reaching several meters locally, and the seawater interface advancing locally several hundred meters inland and rising by several meters. Intrusions of this magnitude risk endangering exploited water wells and their sustainability. Our results demonstrate the critical importance of properly characterizing the geology and its heterogeneity for understanding aquifers at risk because poor predictions may lead to inappropriate decisions, putting critical resources at risk, particularly in coastal environments. Abstract: International audience; The incorporation of vertically aligned carbon nanotubes (VACNTs) between composites plies has been said to enhance the through-thickness strength, and it can also decrease the risk of interply delamination and reduce crack initiation. Thanks to these high mechanical performances, nano-engineered hybrid composites are seen as promising for highly demanding structural reinforcement applications. This paper is part of a study that focuses specifically on the methodology for transferring VACNTs onto a prepreg surface while maintaining their initial vertically aligned morphology. The chosen method involved bonding the VACNTs’ forest through capillary impregnation of the forest by the prepreg’s resin. Key parameters for an effective transfer and to achieve a partial capillary rise of the resin into the VACNTs will be discussed here.

Abstract: Recently, we evidenced that the Manech Tête Rousse (MTR) deficient homozygous haplotype 2 (MTRDHH2) was likely to harbor a recessive lethal variant in ovine. In the present study, we fine mapped this region by analyzing the whole genome sequence of five MTRDHH2 heterozygous carriers compared to 95 sequences of non-carrier animals from MTR and others ovine breeds. We successfully identified a single base pair duplication in theSLC33A1gene, resulting in a frameshift leading to a premature stop codon (p.Arg246Alafs*3). SLC33A1 acts as a transmembrane transporter of acetyl-Coenzyme A, essential for cellular metabolism. In order to assess for the lethal phenotype in homozygous MTR sheep, we generated at-risk matings by artificial insemination (AI) between rams and ewes heterozygous for theSLC33A1variant namedSLC33A1_dupG. Gestation status was checked 15 days post-AI by a molecular test from blood expression of the interferon Tau-stimulatedMX1gene, and by ultrasonography performed between 45 days and 60 days post-AI. Based on ultrasonography, the AI success was reduced by 12% compared to safe matings suggesting embryonic/fetal losses further confirmed by the molecular test based onMX1differential expression. Forty-nine lambs were born from at-risk matings with a mortality rate of 34.7% observed before weaning. HomozygousSLC33A1_dupG lambs contributed to 47% of this mortality occurring mainly in the first five days after lambing with no obvious clinical signs. Thus, an appropriate management ofSLC33A1_dupG (allele frequency of 0.04) in the MTR selection scheme should increase the overall fertility and lamb survival.

Abstract: International audience; In recent years, we have undertaken a technological reappraisal (productional and techno-functional analysis) of several lithic collections attributed to the Acheulean on typological basis during the 20th century and located on the Atlantic coast of Sub-Saharan Africa. This article presents a summary of the work carried out, in progress and to come. Based on the successive synthesis of chronostratigraphic and technological data from each of these lithic assemblages, we discuss the idea of an “African Acheulean”.Despite that this idea of “African Acheulean” masks a technocultural diversity that is still underestimated for the Middle Pleistocene, it remains well anchored in the current prehistoric archaeological research. Concurrently, it appears that the low-resolution geoarchaeological context and the lack of dating for this Atlantic African area are among the pitfalls that have led prehistorians to compare the assemblages discovered to the well-contextualised corpus of South, East and North Africa. Today, new chronological data on some of these Atlantic African assemblages seem to allow a new episteme for these regions thanks to the rising comprehension of local phenomena.The different examples from Senegal, Central African Republic, Gabon, Angola and Namibia gradually highlight the specificities of Earlier Stone Age technical expressions and the existence of local trajectories on the Atlantic fringe, pointing to the need to consider Earlier Stone Age on a regional or even local scale rather than continental scale. Finally, this leads to questioning the existence of specific chronological and techno-cultural scenarios in West Africa – and why not a “west side story”.; Au cours des dernières années, nous avons entrepris la révision technoproductionnelle et/ou technofonctionnelle de collections lithiques de la façade atlantique de l'Afrique subsaharienne, attribuées à l'Acheuléen sur des bases typologiques au cours du xx e siècle. Cet article se présente comme un résumé des travaux réalisés, en cours et à venir. À partir de la synthèse des données chronostratigraphiques puis technologiques de chacun de ces assemblages lithiques, nous discutons l'idée d'un Acheuléen « africain ». Pourtant bien ancrée dans les paradigmes actuels de la Préhistoire ancienne du continent, cette idée masque une diversité technoculturelle encore sous-estimée pour le Pléistocène moyen. Abstract: International audience; Numerical weather prediction centers increasingly make use of cloudy and rainy microwave radiances. Currently, the high microwave frequencies are simulated using simplified assumptions regarding the radiative properties of frozen hydrometeors. In particular, one single particle shape is often used for all precipitating frozen particles, all over the globe, and for all cloud types. In this paper, a multi-SSP (single scattering properties) approach for 1D Bayesian inversions is examined. Two experiments were set up: (1) one with three SSPs and (2) one with the previous SSPs plus one which leads to very cold brightness temperature distributions. For that purpose, we used observations from the GPM Microwave Imager radiometer over 2 months period and forecasts from the Météo-France convective scale AROME model. The results showed that mixtures of SSP are chosen by the inversion method for meteorological conditions with low scattering and that a single particle is chosen for those with high scattering to perform the inversions. Despite the fact that no specific weather scenes were found to be associated with a particular SSP the most efficient scattering particles can be favored for some of them.

Abstract: International audience; The reuse of wastewater aims to mobilize and treat, for certain uses and under certain conditions, water that has already been used. Rather than discharging wastewater into the natural environment, this practice aims to recover it by replacing the mobilization of water withdrawn from the environment [van Loosdrecht and Brdjanovic, 2014]. By moving from a linear logic of the mobilization and use of water to a circular approach, the objective pursued is to reduce the pressure, qualitative then quantitative, on the resources while limiting, as far as possible, the usage conflicts. It is in fact a question of passing from a simple competitive mode which strongly mobilizes resources, to a complex mode, known as “circular”, of putting in complementarity of uses. This approach initially mainly concerned agricultural uses insofar as agricultural needs represent the majority of the water mobilized, including developed countries [UN Water 2018]. Cities integrate specific issues that are characterized by significantly different options from those that can be found in rural areas. In the city, the recovery of wastewater has both material aspects (water, nutrients, critical metals, biopolymers, etc.) and energy aspects (recovery of heat from the networks, production of energy by biological means and /or thermal,…) which should be integrated on an appropriate scale according to the problems addressed (housing, building, district, city, territory or hydrological basin). To study the conditions under which REUSE can develop and be implemented in a safe and sustainable manner, research is needed [Ait-Mouheb et al., 2018]. If it represents an opportunity in certain territories where wastewater can be mobilized, it is also necessary to underline the limits of this practice in territories where the wastewater discharged into the environment is necessary to maintain the low water levels of rivers and rivers, or where soils may be affected, for example, by the salinity of these waters. In addition, studies of the social, economic and environmental dimensions differ significantly depending on the uses envisaged and the situations considered. To meet these challenges, the REUSE network of INRAE (cf. www6.inrae.fr) proposes to adopt a multidisciplinary and multi-scale approach by mobilizing not only the disciplines that can be considered as falling within the field of technologies and environmental engineering but also all of those relating to the human and social sciences, economics, legal, and participatory sciences.

Abstract: International audience; Scientific examination of the heart of Blessed Pauline Jaricot—a French missionary figure—was carried out in 2022. As tandem mass spectrometry proteotyping has proven to be valuable to obtain the broad taxonomic repertoire of a given sample without any a priori information, we aimed at exploring the conditions of preservation of the relics and possible conditions of death. Metaproteomics and high-resolution microtomography imaging approaches were combined. A dataset comprising 6731 high-resolution MS/MS spectra was acquired and 968 of these spectra could be assigned to specific peptidic biomolecules. Based on the taxonomical information encompassed by the identified peptide sequences, 5 phyla were identified amongst eukaryota (94% of the biomass): Ascomycota (55%), with the species Aspergillus versicolor, Trichophyton mentagrophytes and Aspergillus glaucus, corresponding to expected cadaverous fungal flora; Chordata (42%), represented by a unique species, Homo sapiens; Streptophyta (3%); and Arthropoda (traces). Bacteria (6% of the biomass) were poorly represented. No trace of embalming substance could be retrieved, nor any pathogens. Imaging evidenced no heart defect nor embalming traces. No evidence that was inconsistent with natural and spontaneous conservation could be retrieved. This study prefigures the power of modern molecular techniques such as paleoproteotyping coupled to microtomography to gain insight into historical relics.

Abstract: A key aspect of a robot's knowledge base is self-awareness about what it is capable of doing. It allows to define which tasks it can be assigned to and which it cannot. We will refer to this knowledge as the Capability concept. As capabilities stems from the components the robot owns, they can be linked together. In this work, we hypothesize that this concept can be inferred from the components rather than merely linked to them. Therefore, we introduce an ontological means of inferring the agent's capabilities based on the components it owns as well as low-level capabilities. This inference allows the agent to acknowledge what it is able to do in a responsive way and it is generalizable to external entities the agent can carry for example. To initiate an action, the robot needs to link its capabilities with external entities. To do so, it needs to infer affordance relations from its capabilities as well as the external entity's dispositions. Abstract: International audience; Edema disease is an often fatal enterotoxemia caused by specific strains of Shiga toxin-producing Escherichia coli (STEC) that affect primarily healthy, rapidly growing nursery pigs. Recently, outbreaks of edema disease have also emerged in France in wild boars. Analysis of STEC strains isolated from wild boars during 2013-2019 showed that they belonged to the serotype O139:H1 and were positive for both Stx2e and F18 fimbriae. However, in contrast to classical STEC O139:H1 strains circulating in pigs, they also possessed enterotoxin genes sta1 and stb, typical of enterotoxigenic E. coli. In addition, the strains contained a unique accessory genome composition and did not harbor antimicrobial-resistance genes, in contrast to domestic pig isolates. These data thus reveal that the emergence of edema disease in wild boars was caused by atypical hybrid of STEC and enterotoxigenic E. coli O139:H1, which so far has been restricted to the wildlife environment.Keywords

Abstract: The identification of bacterial metabolites produced by the microbiota is a key point to understand its role in human health. Among them, lipo-amino acids (LpAA), which are able to cross the epithelial barrier and to act on the host, are poorly identified. Structural elucidation of few of them was performed by high-resolution tandem mass spectrometry based on electrospray combined with selective ion dissociations reach by collision-induced dissociation (CID). The negative ions were used for their advantages of yielding only few fragment ions sufficient to specify each part of LpAA with sensitivity. To find specific processes that help structural assignment, the negative ion dissociations have been scrutinized for an LpAA: the N-palmitoyl acyl group linked to glutamic acid (C16Glu). The singular behavior of [C16Glu-H]¯ towards CID showed tenth product ions, eight were described by expected fragment ions. In contrast, instead of the expected product ions due to CONH-CH bond cleavage, an abundant complementary dehydrated glutamic acid and fatty acid anion pair were observed. Specific to glutamic moiety, they were formed by a stepwise dissociation via molecular isomerization through ion–dipole formation prior to dissociation. This complex dissociated by partner splitting either directly or after inter-partner proton transfer. By this pathway, surprising regeneration of deprotonated fatty acid takes place. Such regeneration is comparable to that occurred from dissociation to peptides containing acid amino-acid. Modeling allow to confirm the proposed mechanisms explaining the unexpected behavior of this glutamate conjugate.

Abstract: International audience; Production of hydrogen from a renewable source that is water requires the development of sustainable catalytic processes. This implies, among others, developing efficient catalytic materials from abundant and low-cost resources and investigating their performance, especially in the oxidation of water as this half-reaction is the bottleneck of the water splitting process. For this purpose, NiFe-based nanoparticles with sizes ca. 3–4 nm have been synthesized by an organometallic approach and characterized by complementary techniques (WAXS, TEM, STEM-HAADF, EDX, XPS, and ATR-FTIR). They display a Ni core and a mixed Ni–Fe oxide shell. Once deposited onto FTO electrodes, they have been assessed in the electrocatalytic oxygen evolution reaction under alkaline conditions. Three different Ni/Fe ratios (2/1, 1/1 and 1/9) have been studied in comparison with their monometallic counterparts. The Ni2Fe1 nanocatalyst displayed the lowest overpotential (320 mV at j = 10 mA cm−2) as well as excellent stability over 16 h.

Abstract: International audience; With the objective to identify deleterious recessive mutations, we have scanned the genome of 5,271 French Manech Tête Rousse (MTR) dairy sheep using 50k SNP phased genotypes and pedigree data. Five deficient homozygous haplotypes, named MTRDHH1 to MTRDHH5, were identified. These haplotypes showed a highly significant deficit of homozygous animals ranging from 84 to 100%, and a carrier frequency ranging from 7.8 to 16.6%. By comparing at-risk matings (between carriers) and safe matings, some of these haplotypes were associated with a reduced success of artificial insemination (MTRDHH2), and/or an increased stillbirth rate (MTRDHH1 and 2) suggesting the segregation of recessive variants leading to embryo and/or perinatal lethality affecting fertility. Other haplotypes are likely to be associated with lamb morphological disorders or counter-selection based on breed standard. For each haplotype, the most probable candidate genes were highlighted based on their roles in lethal phenotypes, genetic disorders, hornless or coat color.

Abstract: The field of quantum simulation aims at emulating complex quantum systems on platforms that are easier to control and observe. In the last twenty years, ultracold atoms in optical lattices have established themselves as a versatile controllable system for quantum simulation. The three experimental studies presented in this manuscript take place in the development of this field. They are performed using Bose-Einstein condensates (BECs) in a one-dimensional optical lattice that can be precisely controlled in amplitude and phase. In the first study, we use the optimal control formalism to compute the way in which to continuously shift the lattice in order to arbitrarily shape the BEC distribution in the phase space of the system. We apply this method to different targets, among which squeezed Gaussian states more than four times narrower in position than the ground state of the system, as well as the ideal Floquet state superposition to perform quantum simulation of dynamical tunneling is the modulated lattice. The second study concerns the realization of a non-diffusive Hamiltonian ratchet. The ratchet effect consists in the emergence of a directed current of particles in a system with no net force. In this second work, we correlate the amplitude and phase modulations of the lattice to produce, in the phase space of the system, a region of non-chaotic trajectories that travels between lattice sites, resting periodically in the center of each sites. We experimentally implement this system and observe non-diffusive ratchet transport of matter waves in the optical lattice. Finally, we show how short-range interactions between atoms in the BECs lead to the emergence of a supercrystalline order in a sinusoidally modulated optical lattice for a modulation frequency coupling two energy levels. We develop a two-band tight-binding model which predicts that collisions occuring between the atoms of the BECs can lead to the growth of unstable Bogoliubov modes in the vicinity of avoided crossings in the quasi-energy spectrum of the modulated system. Interestingly, we experimentally demonstrate that the periodicity of the emergent order can be tuned through Floquet engineering of these crossings.; Le domaine de la simulation quantique vise à émuler des systèmes quantiques complexes sur des systèmes plus simples à observer et à contrôler. Ces vingt dernières années, les gaz d’atomes ultrafroids sur réseau optique se sont démarqués comme une plateforme versatile et contrôlable pour la simulation quantique. Les trois études expérimentales présentées dans ce manuscrit s’inscrivent dans le développement de ce domaine. Elles sont réalisées avec des condensats de Bose-Einstein (CBE) placés dans un réseau optique unidimensionnel dont on peut contrôler finement la phase et l’amplitude. Dans la première étude, nous utilisons le formalisme du contrôle optimal pour calculer la phase variable que doit avoir le réseau optique au cours du temps afin de préparer des distributions arbitraires de CBE dans l’espace des phases du système. Avec cette méthode, nous réalisons différents états, parmi lesquels des états gaussiens jusqu’à quatre fois plus comprimés en position que l’état fondamental du réseau optique, ou encore la superposition idéale d’états de Floquet pour faire une simulation quantique d’effet tunnel dynamique dans le réseau optique modulé. La deuxième étude traite d’un effet ratchet (rochet) non-diffusif dans un système hamiltonien. L’effet ratchet est l’émergence d’un courant de particules dans un potentiel duquel aucune force nette n’est dérivée. Dans ce travail, nous corrélons les modulations d’amplitude et de phase du réseau afin de faire émerger, dans l’espace des phases du système, une région de trajectoires non-chaotiques qui transite d’un site au suivant en s’arrêtant périodiquement au centre du site. Nous réalisons expérimentalement ce système et observons le transport ratchet non-diffusif d’ondes de matière dans le réseau optique. La dernière étude présentée dans cette thèse démontre comment, dans un réseau optique modulé sinusoı̈dalement à une fréquence couplant deux bandes du système, les interactions à courte-portée entre atomes du CBE peuvent entraîner l’émergence d’un ordre supercristallin. Nous développons un modèle de bandes fortement liées à deux niveaux prédisant que les collisions interatomiques dans le CBE peuvent mener à la croissance de modes instables de Bogoliubov situés à proximité des croisements évités dans le spectre de quasi-énergie du système modulé. Notamment, nous montrons expérimentalement comment la périodicité de cet ordre émergent peut être accordée en procédant à l’ingénierie de Floquet de ces croisements.

Abstract: Séance : Système d’élevage; International audience; This study aimed at analysing the trends for five performances (milk, fat and protein content, fertility, udder health and longevity) of 13 dairy cattle herds managing three-way crossbreeding, and at identifying its explaining factors. We based our work on breed and pedigree data, as well as lactation performance data of the females in these herds for the 2009-2017 period. We applied linear regression to each herd performance over this period, as well as to the evolution of a set of variables describing the herd composition and breeding practices. We then performed partial least square regression (PLS) to assess explanatory factors of the evolution of herd performances. Our results showed that dairy crossbreeding had a significant effect on the evolution of all performances considered. Dairy crossbreeding had as significant an effect on herd performances as variables describing changes in the farming system (conversion to organic farming, change in forage system).; L'objectif de cette étude était d'analyser l'évolution de cinq performances zootechniques (production laitière, taux de matière utile, fertilité, santé de la mamelle et longévité) de 13 troupeaux bovins laitiers au cours de la mise en place en leur sein du croisement rotatif trois voies, puis d'identifier des facteurs explicatifs de cette évolution. Nous avons extrait les données raciales, généalogiques et les données de performances de lactation des femelles de ces troupeaux présentes au cours des campagnes 2009 à 2017. Nous avons modélisé par régression linéaire l'évolution des performances des troupeaux au cours de cette période, ainsi que l'évolution d'un jeu de variables décrivant la composition génétique des troupeaux et les pratiques d'élevage. Puis, nous avons identifié les variables qui expliquaient l'évolution des performances des troupeaux au moyen d'une régression des moindres carrés partiels (PLS). Les résultats mettent en évidence que le croisement a eu un effet significatif sur l'évolution de toutes les performances considérées. Cet effet est aussi important que celui de variables relatives à des changements systémiques (conversion à l'agriculture biologique, changement de système fourrager).

Abstract: International audience; Nowadays, malnutrition (i.e. over and undernutrition) is a major public health issue. This reflects energy and macro and micronutrient imbalances. Among strategies to fight malnutrition, governmental food programs, fortification and nutritional optimization of staple food can be alternatively or concomitantly adopted. Pasta is one of the most popular staple foods. Traditionally made from wheat, its formulation has been improved by including legumes beside wheat. The next effort for improving its formulation would be to use raw materials from climate-smart crops. Our study takes place in the European H2020 Innofood Africa project federating European and African countries on the development of climate-smart crops and their use in the context of a balanced diet. It aims to develop new nutritionally optimized pasta made from gluten free African raw materials adapted to the climate transition e.g. drought resistance, low input requirement. Raw materials are cowpea, faba bean and bambara legume flours; teff, finger millet and amaranth cereal grain flours and additional nutritious raw materials such as orange fleshed sweet potato and amaranth leave flours. Nutritional and antinutritional composition of all flours were determined (protein, amino acids content, starch, sugar, fibres, vitamins, minerals, phytic acids, trypsin inhibitor). This constituted a data base for nutritional optimization of pasta by mathematical programming. In order to cover adults needs, the following criteria were selected: an amino acid chemical score above 110 taking into account process and cooking losses, an omega 6/omega 3 ratio closest to 5, a fiber quantity for 100g of pasta less than 25g, quantities of iron, zinc, B9 vitamin and beta carotene at less equal to recommendations and minimization of anti-nutritional factors. The best formulations covering the nutritional requirements, mainly based on cowpea, teff, amaranth leaves flours, have been selected. They were processed by a classical low temperature extrusion followed by a low temperature drying preserving their nutritional qualities. They have been characterized and compared with classical 100% durum wheat semolina pasta for their textural and culinary properties and their nutritional composition. The in vitro protein and starch digestibility was carried out to determine the impact of formulations on the nutritional potential of pasta.

Abstract: International audience; Direct Numerical Simulations are performed to investigate the gas-liquid mass transfer around a rising spherical bubble contaminated by insoluble surfactants. The surfactant transport on the bubble surface and the Marangoni effect are taken into account when solving the hydrodynamics, resulting in the stagnant-cap condition. A parametric study is carried out to investigate the mass transfer by varying the Reynolds, Marangoni and Schmidt numbers. A thorough analysis of the impact of surfactants on the bubble hydrodynamics is presented through a correlation for the maximum velocity u∗max along the interface as a function of the contamination angle θcap. These two parameters are then found to be crucial to quantify the rate of mass transfer around the interface. The latter is analyzed through the Sherwood number which decreases when the interface is partially immobilized, between the value for a clean bubble and a solid sphere. A local analysis of the mass flux is carried out, which shows that the boundary layer thickens around the immobilized zone of the interface, and that the transfer rate in the mobile zone is also lower than for a clean bubble at same Re, both effects resulting in a decrease of the global Sh. The latter is in particular very sensitive to the local hydrodynamic condition in the front part of the inter-face, where the flux is locally higher and which can be characterized by the intensity of the maximum surface velocity. Finally, a correlation is proposed to predict the Sherwood number of a contaminated bubble depending on both global (Re, Sc) and local (θcap, u∗max) parameters, with a large range of validity (1 ≤ Re ≤ 100, 1 ≤ Sc ≤ 500, 0 ≤ θcap ≤ π ) based on a comparison with previous numerical studies.

Abstract: WO3 is a known photocatalytic metal oxide frequently studied for its depollution properties. However, it suffers from a high recombination rate of the photogenerated electron/holes pair that is detrimental to its performance. In this paper, we present a new chemical method to decorate WO3 nanoleaves (NLs) with a complementary metal oxide (ZnWO4) in order to improve the photocatalytic performance of the composite material for the abatement of 400 ppb NO2 under mild UV exposure. Our strategy was to synthesize WO3·2H2O nanoleaves, then, to expose them, in water-free organic solution, to an organometallic precursor of Zn(Cy)2. A structural water molecule from WO3·2H2O spontaneously decomposes Zn(Cy)2 and induces the formation of the ZnO@WO3·H2O nanocomposite. The material was characterized by electronic microscopy (SEM, TEM), TGA, XRD, Raman and solid NMR spectroscopies. A simple thermal treatment under air at 500 °C affords the ZnWO4@WO3 nanocomposite. The resulting material, additionally decorated with 1% wt. Au, presents a remarkable increase (+166%) in the photocatalytic abatement of NO2 under UV compared to the pristine WO3 NLs. This synthesis method paves the way to the versatile preparation of a wide range of MOx@WO3 nanocomposites (MOx = metal oxide).

Abstract: It took several decades of interaction and dialogue between human sciences and environmental sciences and a number of methodological advances for high altitude spaces to be considered as something other than immutable and atonic. Subjected to integrated interdisciplinary questioning, they reveal not one, but many complex histories and dynamics. By historicising mountain areas, the global point of view on societies is reversed and the whole of the valley systems are reconsidered. It is clear that the teams involved in this research are faced with the problem of acquiring primary information. An essential prerequisite for any archaeological research, high mountain prospecting has its own specificities and particular methodological challenges. How can we go beyond the threshold of the visible surface (micro-relief elevation) to enrich the information with infrastructures made of perishable materials or covered by vegetation? How can we systematise the acquisition to be able to process larger territories more quickly?Technological advances (photogrammetry, thermography, Lidar, georadar, magnetometer, chemical analysis of soils), the diversification and miniaturisation of sensors, the democratisation and development of aerial drones, which allow for the repeatability of acquisitions, are opening up the possibility of setting up new archaeological information acquisition procedures. The new data processing tools, the work on software ergonomics and the opening up of the field of possibilities offered by artificial intelligence allow us to foresee new possibilities for optimising the detection of archaeological remains in high altitude environments.; Il aura fallu plusieurs décennies d’interactions et de dialogue entre sciences humaines, sciences de l’environnement et une somme d’avancées méthodologiques pour que les espaces altitudes soient envisagés autrement qu’immuables et atones. Soumis à des questionnements interdisciplinaires intégrés, ils révèlent, non pas une, mais des histoires et des dynamiques complexes. En historicisant les espaces de montagne, c’est le point de vue global sur les sociétés que l’on inverse et c’est la totalité des systèmes valléens qui sont reconsidérés. Force est de constater que les équipes impliquées dans ces recherches se trouvent confrontées au problème de l’acquisition de l’information primaire. Préalable indispensable à toute recherche en archéologie, la prospection en haute montagne a des spécificités et des enjeux méthodologiques particuliers. Comment aller au-delà du seuil du visible en surface (élévation au microrelief) pour enrichir l’information avec les infrastructures faites en matériaux périssables ou recouvertes de végétation Comment systématiser l’acquisition pour arriver à traiter, plus vite, de plus grands territoires ?Les avancées technologiques (photogrammétrie, thermographie, Lidar, géoradar, magnétomètre, analyse chimique des sols), la diversification et la miniaturisation des capteurs, la démocratisation et le développement des drones aériens, qui permettent la répétabilité des acquisitions, ouvrent la réflexion à la mise en place de nouvelles procédures d’acquisition de l’information archéologique. Les outils de traitement des données, le travail en ergonomie des logiciels et l’ouverture du champ des possibles qu’offre l’intelligence artificielle permettent d’entrevoir les futures possibilités d’optimisation de la détection des vestiges archéologiques en milieux d’altitude.

Abstract: International audience; It was recently shown that radiation, conduction and convection can be combined within a single Monte Carlo algorithm and that such an algorithm immediately benefits from state-of-the-art computer-graphics advances when dealing with complex geometries. The theoretical foundations that make this coupling possible are fully exposed for the first time, supporting the intuitive pictures of continuous thermal paths that run through the different physics at work. First, the theoretical frameworks of propagators and Green’s functions are used to demonstrate that a coupled model involving different physical phenomena can be probabilized. Second, they are extended and made operational using the Feynman-Kac theory and stochastic processes. Finally, the theoretical framework is supported by a new proposal for an approximation of coupled Brownian trajectories compatible with the algorithmic design required by ray-tracing acceleration techniques in highly refined geometry.
