Transcatheter Valve–in–Valve implantation has shown promising results in high–risk patients suffering from structural valve deterioration (SVD) of a previously implanted heart valve bioprosthesis. This is a case of a 82–year–old man, with history of multiple previous mitral valve replacement, admitted to the hospital for heart failure. During diagnostic work out he was diagnosed with a severe aortic stenosis and structural degeneration of a mitral valve bioprostheses Epic 29mm, St Jude Medical, (Inc, St Paul, Minn, USA). The heart team defined the patient at high surgical risk profile and was therefore scheduled for a simultaneous mitral and aortic transcatheter valve implantation. Through a double trans–apical approach (Figure A and B), the patient underwent two balloon expandable valves (Sapien 3, Edwards Lifesciences, Irvine, CA, USA) deployment in native aortic (Figure C) and mitral bioprosthesis (Figure D), respectively. Final angiography showed lack of aortic (Figure E) and left atrial (Figure E) regurgitation. The procedure was uneventful as well as the following hospital stay. Post–procedural transesophageal echocardiography confirmed the absence of paravalvular leakage nor aortic or mitral regurgitation. The patient was discharged at home on day 7. Simultaneous transapical transcatheter aortic and mitral valve replacement is technically feasible with the current available technology and can be a possible alternative in patients with high surgical risk.

Objective Atrial functional mitral valve regurgitation is a less common form of functional mitral regurgitation with normal leaflet motion and morphology, preserved dimension and function of left ventricle, associated with atrial fibrillation ad/or left atrial dilatation. Several factors are involved into the etiology, such as mitral annular dilation and insufficient leaflet remodeling, atriogenic leaflet tethering, loss of annular saddle shape and contractility, changes in heart rate. Methods Eleven consecutive patients with atrial functional mitral regurgitation, mean age 65 ± 12 years, normal left ventricle dimension and ejection fraction greater than 50% underwent mitral valve repair via right mini–thoracotomy in case of isolated mitral and tricuspid valve surgery or via median sternotomy in case of combined procedures. Concomitant procedures include tricuspid valve repair in 1 patient and coronary artery bypass in 5 patients. All patients presented an increased dimension of left atrium (mean left atrial volume: 90 ± 23 ml); mitral annular dimension was investigated with trans–esophageal echocardiography before operation. In all patients was implanted a downsized complete rigid annuloplasty ring with asymmetrical design of two sizes smaller respect to measured intercommissural distance. Clinical outcomes of patients and echocardiographic findings related to mitral regurgitation recurrence and left ventricle function were followed in the time. Results At discharge, any patient present a residual mitral regurgitation greater than mild, mean trans–mitral gradient was 2.5 ±2.1 mmHg. During the follow–up period of 24 ± 5 months, the New York Heart Association functional class significantly improved from 2.5 ± 0.4 to 1.5 ± 2.1. In three patients occurred cardiac rhythm disturbances requiring hospital stay, only one patient developed a greater than mild mitral regurgitation, reoperation was not becessary in any case. Left atrial volume decreased from 90 ± 23 ml to 58 ± 30 ml. Conclusions Mitral annuloplasty with downsized ring is a safe and effective procedure in patient with atrial functional mitral regurgitation in the same way of patient with functional mitral regurgitation due to ventricular dilation and tethering. The comforting clinical and echocardiographic outcome in our small group of patient encourage future studies in this particular group of patients.

A 73–year–old asymptomatic woman came to our observation to perform a routine echocardiographic examination. The patient suffered from arterial hypertension, dyslipidemia, hypothyroidism, paroxysmal atrial fibrillation. She underwent a bilateral mastectomy for breast cancer about 5 years ago, and she was undergoing chemotherapy and radiation therapy for a stage IV lung adenocarcinoma. The clinical evaluation was normal, as was the electrocardiogram. Transthoracic echocardiographic evaluation showed the presence of a rounded formation with variable echogenicity, with an irregular surface (4 x 3 cm), adherent to the interatrial septum at the level of the fossa ovalis, which did not hinder the excursion of the mitral valve. No other significant cardiac abnormalities were detected. Tansesophageal echocardiography confirmed the presence of atrial mass adhered to the oval fossa (panels A, B). of coarsely rounded shape, and variable echogenicity, in the absence of interference with the movement of the valve leaflets and of anomalies of the interatrial septum (panel C). Coronary angiography showed a right–dominant coronary circulation (panel D) and a mild stenosis of the mid left anterior descending artery. An abundant arterial perfusion of the atrial mass, with several vessels originating from the circumflex artery was also evident at the coronary angiography (panels E, F). The patient underwent cardiac surgery; the surgical exeresis of the left atrial mass was performed through right mini thoracotomy. Because the neo–formation was adherent not only to the atrial septum but also to the left atrial roof, to obtain a radical excision, a large portion of the atrial wall and the septum were removed and totally reconstructed with the pericardium. The main artery supplied the mass related vascular network was ligated. The post–operative course was uneventful, and the patient was discharged at home on day six. The pre–discharge echocardiography showed absence of any residual mass in left atrium that appear anatomically reshaped, no shunt at level of interatrial septum, preserved ventricular function of both ventricles. Histological analysis confirmed the diagnosis of atrial myxoma. At six–month follow–up the patient was asymptomatic and the echocardiography was superimposable to discharge.

Objective The objective of our study is to evaluate safety, hemodynamic performance and durability of the new generation aortic bioprosthesis with Resilia Tissue. Methods RES-ITA Registry is the Italian multicenter registry created in 2017, enrolling patients who underwent isolated or combined AVR with Resilia tissue valve. The Registry was recently recognized by SICCH as the official national registry of Resilia tissue valve implantations, with Potenza’s Cardiac Surgery Unit as its coordinating center. Isolated AVR (50%) was performed predominantly through an upper J mini-sternotomy or a right anterior mini-thoracotomy, while combined procedures (50%) were performed in full sternotomy and included associated CABG, ascending aorta surgery, mitral valve repair or replacement, aortic annulus enlargement. For all patients, clinical and echocardiographic assessment were evaluated at discharge, 30 days, 6 months and every year after surgery. Results Between June 2017 and March 2022, about 1000 patients were included, coming from 13 Italian cardiac surgery centers. During last year, 6 more Italian centers have asked to join the Registry. Mean age was 57±11 years. Mean Euroscore II was 2.24±3.01%. Redo surgery was performed in 11%. Most frequently implanted valve sizes were 23 mm (30%), 25 mm (27.7%) and 27 mm (19%). Two-year freedom from all-cause mortality for isolated AVR and for all patients was 97.4±1.3% and 95.7±1.1%, respectively. Two-year freedom from major paravalvular leaks (≥2+/4) was 98.4±0.8; freedom from prosthesis thrombosis was 96.7±2 and freedom from prosthesis dysfunction (according to VARC-2 criteria) was 96.7±1.7. Mean gradient was 13.3±8.3 mmHg and maximum gradient was 23.2±16.2 mmHg at 2-year follow-up. Conclusions The new generation aortic prosthesis with RESILIA tissue demonstrates versatility of use, safety, good early and mid-term outcomes and hemodynamic performance. Further investigations and longer follow-up are needed to evaluate long-term durability.

Aims: Data about woody debris (WD) decomposition are very scarce for the Mediterranean basin. The specific aim of this work is to explore the relationships between WD traits with the decay rate. Methods: We carried out a three-year litterbag decomposition experiment using ten WD types incubated in two plant communities (i.e. shrubland and woodland) and in laboratory conditions. WD was characterized for 31 chemical and anatomical traits, including macro- and micronutrients, lignin, and cellulose as well as organic chemistry by Solid-state Cross-Polarization Magic Angle Spinning Carbon-13 Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (13C CPMAS NMR) and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy/ Attenuated Total Reflection (FT-IR/ATR spectroscopy). Results: WD decay rate was negatively associated with di-O-alkyl, lignin/N and C/N ratios, but positively with N concentration. Less consistent but positive correlations were recored for K, Mn, and Na concentration. The alkyl C and carboxylic C regions, associated with aliphatic and amide compounds, was positively correlated with WD decomposition. Conversely, di-O-alkyl C and O-alkyl C fractions, largely associated with cellulose and hemicellulose, were negatively correlated with WD decay rate. Finally, the positive correlation between Na concentration and WD mass loss in field conditions suggest a role of this neglected micronutrient for wood decomposition. WD specific density and anatomical features, have a minor capability to explain decomposition rate. Conclusions: Our findings demonstrate a major role of WD chemical traits in explaining the variability of decomposition in Mediterranean ecosystems.

Soil quality is fundamental for ecosystem long term functionality, productivity and resilience to current climatic changes. Despite its importance, soil is lost and degraded at dramatic rates worldwide. In Europe, the Mediterranean areas are a hotspot for soil erosion and land degradation due to a combination of climatic conditions, soils, geomorphology and anthropic pressure. Soil organic carbon (SOC) is considered a key indicator of soil quality as it relates to other fundamental soil functions supporting crucial ecosystem services. In the present study, the functional relationships among SOC and other important soil properties were investigated in the topsoil of 38 sites under different land cover and management, distributed over three Mediterranean regions under strong desertification risk, with the final aim to define critical SOC ranges for fast loss of important soil functionalities. The study sites belonged to private and public landowners seeking to adopt sustainable land management practices to support ecosystem sustainability and productivity of their land. Data showed a very clear relationship between SOC concentrations and the other analyzed soil properties: total nitrogen, bulk density, cation exchange capacity, available water capacity, microbial biomass, C fractions associated to particulate organic matter and to the mineral soil component and indirectly with net N mineralization. Below 20 g SOC kg−1, additional changes of SOC concentrations resulted in a steep variation of all the analyzed soil indicators, an order of magnitude higher than the changes occurring between 50 and 100 g SOC kg−1 and 3–4 times the changes observed at 20–50 g SOC kg−1. SUMMARY: Compared with annual crop cultivation, tree groves might represent a relevant land‐use system to improve C sequestration, but few data are available to support this hypothesis. To evaluate the potential of olive tree (Olea europaea L., 1753) cultivation to store soil organic C (SOC), we assessed (i) the distribution of organic C in active (water‐extractable and particulate organic C, WEOC and POC, respectively), intermediate (organic matter associated with stable sand‐size aggregates and silt‐ and clay‐size aggregates, SSAs and SCAs, respectively) and passive (organic matter resistant to oxidation, rSOM) pools, (ii) the phenol content of the C pools, (iii) the humic‐C distribution of the intermediate C pool and (iv) the stocks of SOC pools in two olive groves of different age (7 years (OG7) and 30 years (OG30)) compared with a nearby site with cereal crops (arable soil, AS). In OG30 the organic C stock of the olive grove was no different from that of the AS, but the distribution of SOC pools changed with the age of the olive groves. The WEOC and POC increased in the Ap horizon of OGs, probably because of the herbaceous cover and distribution of chipped prunings on the soil. There were fewer SSAs in OG7 than AS, possibly because of pedoturbations from deep tillage before the olive trees were established, but they increased in OG30. The increase in SSAs and SCAs in the Bw and BC horizons of OG30 was associated with humic‐C and unextractable‐C and a smaller phenol content than AS. This suggested that the olive tree roots had a positive role through rhizodeposition and root turnover, which favoured the stabilization of organic matter into aggregates at depth. In contrast to the active and intermediate C pools, the passive C pool did not vary following the change in land use from arable to olive grove. HIGHLIGHTS: Effects of land‐use change from arable to olive grove on soil organic C pools and stocks. Soil organic C stock increased from 7‐ to 30‐year‐old olive orchard. Olive tree cultivation affected active and intermediate C pools, but not the passive C pool. After 30 years, the olive grove stored an amount of SOC similar to that of the arable system.

Agricultural soils generally have a low content of organic matter, which affects soil fertility and hence crop yields. The use of olive pomace as an organic amendment could enhance soil properties due to its high content of organic matter and exchangeable cations as well as its extensive availability. However, little is known about the potentially detrimental effects of salts and high content of phenolic substances that might occur over time with the use of pomace amendment in agricultural soils. Similarly, its impact on microbial communities and enzyme activities is largely unknown. To ascertain these effects, we tested the response of soil enzyme activities (β-glucosidase, urease, acid phosphomonoesterase and dehydrogenase) starting from a long-term (8-year) previously amended soil and a control (non-amended) soil and exposing these soils to a short-term (12-week) laboratory experiment. We also focused on soil organic matter and mineral N, on relating enzymatic data to bacterial and fungal biomasses, and on an index for soil functional quality based on enzyme activities (AI3). Our results show that organic matter, enzyme activities and the soil quality index were improved by long-term treatment with olive pomace, contrasting with scant effects from short-term laboratory incubation. In spite of its high content in salts and phenolic substances, no detectable negative impact emerged from the use of this amendment. Overall, olive pomace clearly increased soil organic matter and improved soil biological activity and quality, without any detectable negative effects.

Funding Acknowledgements None Background A blunted heart rate reserve (HRR) during dipyridamole stress echo (SE) is a marker of cardiac autonomic dysfunction associated with poor outcome, independently of inducible ischemia, underlying coronary artery disease (CAD) and beta-blocker therapy. Patients with diabetes and/or renal failure have higher prevalence of underlying autonomic dysfunction. Aim. To assess the value of HRR in patients undergoing dipyridamole SE. Methods We prospectively recruited a sample of 61 patients with known or suspected CAD (mean age 75 ± 10 years; 34 males, 55,7%; 50% on beta-blockers at the time of testing). Coexistent atrial fibrillation or previous pacemaker implantation were considered as exclusion criteria. Three groups were identified a priori: non-diabetic with normal renal function (n = 43, Group 1); diabetics, with normal renal function (n = 14, Group 2); severely impaired renal function on dialysis (n = 4, Group 3). All patients underwent dipyridamole SE (0.84 mg/kg in 10"). Wall motion score Index (WMSI) was calculated with a 17-segment score of left ventricle, each segment scored from 1= normal to 4= dyskinetic. HRR was measured by ECG as the peak/rest HR ratio. Results A positive SE (stress WMSI> rest WMSI) was present in 2 patients of Group 1 (4.7%), 4 of Group 2 (28.6%) and no patient in Group 3. Heart rate was different, although not significant, among the 3 groups both at rest (66.1 ± 11.1 vs 64.6 ± 8.5 vs 79.0 ± 8.0, p = 0.050) and at peak stress (83.8 ± 12.6 vs 75.3 ± 10.3 vs 86.5 ± 11.1, p = 0.059). Of note, HRR was statistically different among groups (1.29 ± 0.20 vs 1.19 ± 0.14 vs 1.09 ± 0.06, p Conclusion HRR is frequently abnormal in patients referred for SE testing, especially in presence of concomitant diabetes and advanced renal failure. The blunted chronotropic response is a simple, imaging independent marker of cardiac autonomic dysfunction and may usefully complement the conventional evaluation with regional wall motion abnormalities during vasodilator SE. Summary Intensive agricultural systems negatively affect soil quality principally because of a reduction in soil organic matter (OM). Sustainable practices providing organic amendments could be useful to maintain or increase OM content in agricultural soils, preserving and improving soil fertility. In this study, biomass with a large C:N ratio was applied to intensively farmed agricultural soils to maximize the increase of soil OM and hence chemical and biochemical fertility. In particular, 30 and 60 t ha−1 of two mixtures of compost and scraps from poplar pruning, A1 and A2, with different C:N ratios (15 and 25, respectively), were applied to soils of two farms (F1 and F2) in a Mediterranean area (southern Italy) on an annual basis for two consecutive years. An effective, long-lasting increase of soil OM, on average of 60 and 55% in F1 and F2 soils, respectively, was reached at the end of the experiment. As well as a progressive increase in the C:N ratio, total N and available P also increased with organic amendments, with positive effects on soil microbial activity as demonstrated by the enhancement of the seven studied enzymatic activities. Principal component analysis demonstrated different responses to various organic amendments between F1 and F2 soils because of their geopedological diversity. The results indicate that the C:N ratio of the mixture is an important factor, but what is the best rate of addition to use is still not obvious. The use of a smaller amount (30 t ha−1) of the A1 mixture (10:1 compost:wood) appears, in these types of soils, to be the most suitable strategy to produce significant benefits.

Plant invasions can have relevant impacts on biogeochemical cycles, whose extent, in Mediterranean ecosystems, have not yet been systematically assessed comparing litter carbon (C) and nitrogen (N) dynamics between invasive plants and native communities. We carried out a one-year litterbag experiment in 4 different plant communities (grassland, sand dune, riparian and mixed forests) on 8 invasives and 24 autochthonous plant species, used as control. Plant litter was characterized for mass loss, N release, proximate lignin and litter chemistry by 13C CPMAS NMR. Native and invasive species showed significant differences in litter chemical traits, with invaders generally showing higher N concentration and lower lignin/N ratio. Mass loss data revealed no consistent differences between native and invasive species, although some woody and vine invaders showed exceptionally high decomposition rate. In contrast, N release rate from litter was faster for invasive plants compared to native species. N concentration, lignin content and relative abundance of methoxyl and N-alkyl C region from 13C CPMAS NMR spectra were the parameters that better explained mass loss and N mineralization rates. Our findings demonstrate that during litter decomposition invasive species litter has no different decomposition rates but greater N release rate compared to natives. Accordingly, invasives are expected to affect N cycle in Mediterranean plant communities, possibly promoting a shift of plant assemblages.

The impact of different land use types on soil quality was evaluated by measuring several soil properties that are sensitive to stress or disturbance and by using two synthetic approaches, i.e. a numerical quality index and multivariate analysis. A Minimum Data Set of soil indicators was selected including physical (texture, bulk density and water holding capacity), chemical (pH, cation exchange capacity, electrical conductivity, organic carbon, total and mineral nitrogen, available K, Ca, Mg, P contents and total Cd, Cr, Cu, Pb and Zn contents) and biological (microbial biomass, fungal mycelium, soil potential respiration and potentially mineralizable nitrogen) parameters. These parameters were assayed on soil samples collected with seasonal frequency (except for physical parameters, determined only in autumn) in an area of Southern Italy under different land use types (i.e. permanent crops, grazing lands, shrublands, coniferous and mixed forests). Moreover, for most of the land use types, a further distinction on the basis of topographic position (hill, middle-hill and plain) was carried out. Annual means of the data (except for texture) were used to calculate a soil quality index (SQI) and elaborated by multivariate analyses (Cluster Analysis and Principal Component Analysis, PCA) in order to distinguish among different soil quality classes. Data indicated a clear difference in soil quality among the studied areas: low soil quality (SQI < 0.55) in almost all permanent crops; intermediate soil quality (0.55 < SQI < 0.70) in shrublands, grazing lands, coniferous forest and middle-hill olive grove (the only crop with an herb layer on the soil surface); high soil quality (SQI > 0.70) in mixed forests. Results suggested that the permanent crop management had generally a strong negative impact on soil quality, while the moderate grazing activity and the crop management that leaves an herb cover on the soil had a lower negative impact. Nevertheless, the abandonment of cultivated lands, with consequent development of shrublands, produced an improvement of soil quality suggesting a good recovery capacity in the studied soil. © 2009 Elsevier B.V. Soil microbial activities and chemical properties related to the N cycle were investigated in function of variations in plant cover type in a Mediterranean area of Southern Italy. Several biological (microbial biomass, soil respiration, protease activity, degradation of 7 amino acids, net N mineralization, net nitrification, potential net nitrification and denitrification) and chemical properties (water content, pH, organic C, total and mineral N, C/N ratio) were determined in soil samples collected in spring and early autumn under three plant cover types (high maquis, low shrub community and meadow) epitomizing distinct successional stages following disturbance. Water content, organic C and C/N ratio were higher in soil from high maquis than in soils from the other plant cover types; in contrast, no difference was generally observed between the three soil types as for total and mineral N content. Likewise, no clear-cut difference was recorded for most of the tested biological parameters if these were expressed per unit of soil dry weight, with the exception of protease activity and soil respiration, which were significantly higher in the high maquis. However, when biological data were expressed per unit of organic C, meadow soil showed higher values of microbial biomass, asparagine degradation (only in spring), net mineralization and net nitrification (only in autumn) compared to the other soils. Statistical analysis pointed to seasonal fluctuation of water availability as an important limiting factor for microbial biomass and activity, with the exceptions of net N mineralization, net nitrification, glutamine and glutamic acid degradation activities which appeared to be mainly driven by organic matter content in soils. Overall, the results suggest that, in the investigated Mediterranean environment, variations in plant community ranging from meadow to high maquis produce little changes in soil biological activities linked to the N cycle, these being primarily affected by the availability of water and soil organic matter during the annual cycle. © 2009 Elsevier B.V. The Mediterranean area of Southern Italy is characterized by different natural plant covers that mainly reflect different successional stages (i.e. low maquis, high maquis, Quercus ilex wood) and managed areas with introduced plant species (such as Pinus species). Soil properties could be affected by plant cover types as well as by plant species. Our objective was to determine the relationships of plant cover types and plant species with the chemical and biological characteristics of the soil. In four neighbouring areas with different plant cover types (low maquis, pure high maquis, high maquis with pines and pinewood, with pines planted by foresters in both cases), soil samples were collected under different plant species in order to evaluate the effect of plant cover types and plant species on soil properties. Soil samples were analyzed for nutrient content, microbial biomass, soil potential respiration and enzymatic activity (phosphatase, arylsulphatase, β-glucosidase and hydrolase activities) as well as for pH, water holding capacity (WHC) and cation exchange capacity (CEC). Application of cluster analysis and principal component analysis to the data revealed that the plant cover type was the key factor influencing soil properties more than plant species. In fact, the largest differences were observed between pure high maquis soils and all other soils, with pure high maquis soils generally showing the highest values of WHC, CEC, nutrient content, organic and microbial C, soil respiration, phosphatase, arylsulphatase and β-glucosidase activities. The significantly lower values of these variables in the low maquis relative to the pure high maquis probably reflect the effect of ecological succession on soil. The high maquis with pine, differing from the pure high maquis only for the presence or absence of pine, showed values of soil physical, chemical and biological characteristics similar to those found in the low maquis, thus suggesting that the presence of pine retards soil development. © 2004 Elsevier Ltd. Concerns about groundwater contamination as well as pesticide residues in food and soil have fuelled vigorous debates about the sustainability of chemical-intensive agriculture. Search has been prompted for agronomic strategies with lower environmental hazards. In this multidisciplinary study we compared the characteristics of soils from 20 agricultural farms selected in five geographical areas of Southern Italy with different soil types. In each farm, fields with management regime classified as high-input (HIMR, intensive cultivation under plastic tunnels) or low-input (LIMR, tree orchards) were selected. Soil samples were analyzed for 31 parameters including physical and chemical properties (bulk density, water holding capacity, texture, pH, limestone, electrical conductivity, organic C to a depth of 0-20 and 20-40cm, total N, P2O5, Ca2+, Mg2+, K+, Na+, cation exchange capacity), enzymatic activities (dehydrogenase, arylsulphatase, β-glucosidase, phosphatase and urease) and microbiological features (potential respiration, functional diversity of microbial populations by BIOLOG EcoPlates™, microbial biomass, fungal mycelium, culturable actinomycetes, bacteria and fungi, pseudomonads and bacterial species richness by 16S rDNA-DGGE). Finally, a soil bioassay was performed in order to evaluate the plant growth of a biotest plant (Lactuca sativa) and soil suppressiveness of the Rhizoctonia solani-L. sativa pathosystem.Results showed that many soil properties were influenced by management regime more than by the sampling area. Compared to LIMR, HIMR soils consistently had reduced soil organic C (-24%), enzymatic activities, microbial biomass and fungal mycelium (-40% and -18%, respectively), functional diversity (-18%) and bacterial species richness (-14%). On the contrary, the same soils showed a remarkable increase in the values of the parameters related to the mineral soil fraction (electrical conductivity +370%; P2O5 +72%; Na+ +86%). Management regime did not affect cation exchange capacity, pH, limestone and soil texture. The lettuce bioassay showed a higher plant growth (+17%) in the LIMR compared to HIMR soils, despite the lower content of mineral nutrients. Suppression of R. solani was not influenced by management regime, but significant differences were recorded among farms. Differences among the assessed soil parameters indicate a trend of soil quality deterioration under the high-input management regime. © 2010 Elsevier B.V.

Vegetable cultivation under plastic tunnels is a steadily growing agricultural sector but concern developed over environmental sustainability of this farming system. Our aim was to identify organic amendments with a biochemical quality that effectively balance the trade-off between organic carbon recovery, in terms of increasing soil organic C stock, and nutrient mineralization. A three-year field experiment was carried out in two farms of southern Italy characterized by plastic tunnel cultivation and contrasting soil characteristics. Two compost-wood mixtures were used, with final C/N ratio of 15 and 25, and supplied in two doses (30 and 60Mgha-1). Vegetable yield was assessed by monitoring 14 cropping cycles, and soil quality by determining 18 soil parameters including chemical and biological properties. Crop yields were significantly higher in amendment plots, compared to unamended control plots under plastic tunnel, for 12 out of 14 cropping cycles. Combined application of compost and wood allowed an effective recovery of soil C content within three years. Soil amendments improved soil biological functions as revealed by a general trend of positive effects on dehydrogenase, phosphatase and β-glucosidase as well as on soil respiration. The higher C/N ratio mixture determined only a short-term restriction of mineral nitrogen availability. Organic amended plots showed a significant increase in soil exchangeable Na+ and electrical conductivity compared with untreated controls. Compost-woody combination can be used to recover soil carbon stock and fertility and, at the same time, to support vegetable production under plastic tunnels. However, the possible increase of soil salinity after compost amendment may negatively affect soil quality in the long-term. © 2014 Elsevier B.V.

In a previous work by one of us (R. Urigu) concerning open quantum systems it was remarked that in processes of the type\(w \to (\bar p_i \bar w_i )\), when evaluating the information entropy of the environment as the Shannon entropy of the outcome probabilities\(\bar p_i \) in the channels\(\bar w_i \), the total information entropy may decrease. We remark here that this decrease is easily excluded by requiring a condition of quantum modelizability of the environment even with respect to Shannon entropy (“cybernetic interpretability” of the environment). Further conditions on the quantum model of the environment are defined (“maximal observability” and “Boolean interpretability”), which are proved to be equivalent, and it turns out that, once satisfied in one model, they also are in any model with pure initial state; furthermore, these conditions turn out to be equivalent to the condition that the process consists of pure operations of the first kind. The relevance to the concept of macroscopicity and to the “von Neumann chain” is discussed.

Subclinical infections of the prostate can increase the prostate-specific antigen (PSA) values in patients with normal digital rectal examination. This study aimed to evaluate the role of short-term antimicrobial therapy in reducing the PSA value in patients as candidates for transrectal biopsy. Fifty-eight patients with negative digital rectal examination and PSA values between 4 and 20 ng/mL were included in the study. Antibiotics were administered to all patients for 3 weeks, and the PSA was reassessed 10 days after the end of the treatment. Patients were subsequently submitted to prostate biopsy. A reduction in PSA was detected in 34 patients (59%). Mean percentage reduction was 32%. In only six patients (10%) did the PSA return to normal levels. Prostate biopsy revealed prostate cancer in 26 patients (45%). Prostate cancer was not detected in patients with PSA levels above 4 ng/mL. Prostate biopsy can be avoided only in a small number of patients showing the normalization of PSA levels after short-term antimicrobial therapy. These patients should be strictly monitored with frequent PSA determinations.

In a Mediterranean area of Southern Italy, affected by low- and high-severity experimental fires, burned and unburned soils were analysed, at 245, 364 and 728 days after fire, for total and active fungal mycelium mass, abundance, species density and species composition of total, xerotolerant and heat-stimulated culturable fungi, oribatid mites and springtails. Principal Component Analysis was used to compare species composition of fungal community and faunal groups in burned and unburned plots. Independently of severity, fire generally caused a decrease in fungal mass, an increase in culturable total, xerotolerant and heat-stimulated fungi abundance (CFU), and minor changes in fungal species density. In parallel, fire induced a reduction in abundance and species density of studied faunal groups, generally correlated with fungal changes, and was consistently associated with the appearance of fungal and faunal species not present in control. Moreover, qualitative and quantitative changes in fungal community and faunal groups were recorded in association with sampling time. The results also suggested that the mosaic of burned and unburned areas, typical of a Mediterranean maquis affected by fire, could promote biodiversity in soil by favouring the contemporary presence of species typical of disturbed and undisturbed areas.

Introduction and Objectives We treated a 45 years old patient, suffering from diabetes mellitus since childhood, with retinal, neurovascular and kidney complications. In 1988, for erectile dysfunction (ED) resistant to medical injective treatment, the patient underwent ligation of the dorsal vein of the penis without any result. In 1989 a Flexiflate® hydraulic prosthesis was implanted with resolution of ED. In 2005 the patient underwent simultaneous kidney and pancreas transplant with a trans-laparotomic approach for end stage renal disease and diabetes mellitus. In 2009, because of the Flexiflate® Surgitek malfunction, the patient underwent explantation of the Flexiflate® prosthesis and simultaneous implantation of a Titan® Alpha 1 prosthesis with a double surgical approach. Material and Methods After a penoscrotal incision and the explant of the Flexiflate® Surgitek, a Titan® Alpha 1 prosthesis was implanted with a double incision technique. The placement of two inflatable cylinders and the pump was performed by penoscrotal approach. Instead, the prosthesis’ reservoir was placed with a separate infra-pubic incision to avoid possible injury from a single trans-inguinal approach, due to the previous laparotomy. Results After follow-up at 9 months and 1 year the prosthesis was working well and the patient satisfied. Conclusions We couldn't find any related paper in the literature and as far as we know this is the only report on a simultaneous explant/implant of penile prosthesis with a double surgical approach in a patient with kidney and pancreas transplant.

The present study investigates the impact of fire (low and high severity) on soil fungal abundance and microbial efficiency in C assimilation and mineralisation in a Mediterranean maquis area of Southern Italy over 2 years after fire. In burned and control soils total and active fungal mycelium, microbial biomass C, percentage of microbial biomass C present as fungal C, metabolic quotient (qCO2) and coefficient of endogenous mineralisation (CEM) were assayed together with several chemical properties of soil (i.e. pH and contents of organic C, total and mineral N, available K, Mg, Mn and water). Fire significantly decreased the fungal mycelium, whereas it stimulated microbial growth probably through the enhancement of bacterial growth because of the increase in organic C and nutrient contents in burned plots. This shift in microbial community composition might explain the observed reduction in soil microbial efficiency of C assimilation (high qCO2) and the increase in C mineralisation rate (CEM) in the first 84 days after fire. Therefore, fire might increase CO2 input to the atmosphere not only during combustion phase but also in the post-fire period. © 2007 Springer-Verlag.

Hydronephrosis during pregnancy is commonly considered physiological due to compression of the ureters by the gravid uterus and by dilated ovarian veins. Only in symptomatic cases or secondary to obstruction is a urinary diversion required. Six cases of symptomatic hydronephrosis treated with percutaneous nephrostomy are reported. Tocolytic therapy was practised in order to avoid the risk of abortion.

The effect of heavy metal contamination on biological and biochemical properties of Italian volcanic soils was evaluated in a multidisciplinary study, involving pedoenvironmental, micromorphological, physical, chemical, biological and biochemical analyses. Soils affected by recurring river overflowing, with Cr(III)-contaminated water and sediments, and a non-flooded control soil were analysed for microbial biomass, total and active fungal mycelium, enzyme activities (i.e., FDA hydrolase, dehydrogenase, β-glucosidase, urease, arylsulphatase, acid phosphatase) and bacterial diversity (DGGE characterisation). Biological and biochemical data were related with both total and selected fractions of Cr and Cu (the latter deriving from agricultural chemical products) as well as with total and extractable organic C. The growth and activity of soil microbial community were influenced by soil organic C content rather than Cu or Cr contents. In fact, positive correlations between all studied parameters and organic C content were found. On the contrary, negative correlations were observed only between total fungal mycelium, dehydrogenase, arylsulphatase and acid phosphatase activities and only one Cr fraction (the soluble, exchangeable and carbonate bound). However, total Cr content negatively affected the eubacterial diversity but it did not determine changes in soil activity, probably because of the redundancy of functions within species of soil microbial community. On the other hand, expressing biological and biochemical parameters per unit of total organic C, Cu pollution negatively influenced microbial biomass, fungal mycelium and several enzyme activities, confirming soil organic matter is able to mask the negative effects of Cu on microbial community. © 2005 Elsevier Ltd. The effect of experimental fires on fungi and fungivorous microarthropods was investigated in a coastal area of southern Italy. In particular, in burned soils affected by different severity fires (low and high) the following parameters were determined at 245 (March 2001), 364 (July 2001) and 728 (July 2002) days after fire: total and active fungal mycelium, abundance and species density of total, xerotolerant and heatstimulated fungi as well as abundance and species density of oribatid mites and springtails, which are the main groups of mesofauna. Fungal mycelium decreased in burned soils, compared to unburned soils, during the whole study period (active mycelium) or only at 728 days after fire (total mycelium), with significant effect of fire severity only at 245 days after fire. Similarly, species density of total mycobiota tend to be reduced in burned soils; by contrast, total mycobiota abundance increased in burned soils, reflecting the increase in abundance of xerotolerant and heat-stimulated fungi. To some extent total fungal decrease could be responsible for reduction in abundance and species density of oribatid mites and springtails often occurred in this study (with the exception for July 2002), particularly in soils affected by high-severity fire. In fact, positive correlations between faunal and fungal parameters were often observed. However, the effect of other factors on soil fauna cannot be excluded. A clear temporal dynamics of considered biological parameters was generally evident, with the lowest values in the first summer after fire (July 2001), characterized by the lowest soil water content. In fact, positive correlations with soil water content were found for fungal mycelium and abundance as well as for springtail species density. Different organism groups showed the highest abundance and species density in different times (at March 2001 or July 2002). Data suggest that changes due to fire together with seasonal variation of climatic factors (probably emphasized by fire) raise the survival probability of several species, also providing temporary refuges to species (such as heat-stimulated fungi) that are unable to compete in undisturbed soils, so that different groups were favoured in different microhabitats and/or in different times.

– In this retrospective study, the Authors report their experience on the analysis of sensitivity and specificity of DRE, PSA and transrectal ultrasound, individually and in association, in the study of 118 patients with suspected prostate cancer. Results show that the association of these three techniques give a specificity of 96.6% but low sensitivity (53%).

Fire is a disturbance in the Mediterranean region associated with frequent drought periods, and can affect the soil microbial community, which plays a fundamental role in nutrient cycling. In the present study the effect of low- and high-severity experimental fires on the soil microbial community was evaluated in an Italian Mediterranean maquis. Burned and unburned soils were compared for functional diversity, specific activities, microbial biomass, fungal mycelia and fungal fraction of microbial carbon, during the first year after fire. In the first week after fire, changes in the functional diversity were observed in burned soils, differing also between low- and high-severity fires. Respiration responses to specific organic compounds were generally lower in burned soils during the whole study period, with a percentage of changed responses from 2 to 70%. The general reduction in burned soils of the fungal fraction of microbial carbon (19–61%) and active mycelia (16–55%), together with the increase in microbial biomass carbon (29–42%) during the first 3 months after fire, suggest a larger and longer effect of fire on fungi than on bacteria. The results indicate a rapid recovery of functional diversity in soil after burning despite the persistent reduction of microbial community activity and the change in its structure.

– Ultrasound was used to measure the detrusor thickness in 20 women with urodynamically-proved detrusorial instability. In 95% of the cases, detrusor thickness is greater than or equal to 5 mm. Comparison with a control group confirms the reliability of these results.

Processes are considered in which an ensemble of objects interacts with a macroscopic system so as to split into a family of ensembles according to the effects on the macroscopic system (nondestructive measurement with separation of the «channels» being the most familiar example). Whenever the interaction is «pure»,i.e. it transforms every pure state into pure states in all the channels, it is proved in quantum physics and, at least for the «discretized states», in classical physics that the microscopic entropy of the objects that undergo the interaction decreases (or at most remains constant). The resulting situation is discussed with reference to the already known inequalities concerning entropy, which, of course, only related to the special case of perfect nondestructive measurement (ensuring, in particular, that the total entropy, including the entropy of the macroscopic system, increases, or at most remains constant). At the end the results is regarded as expressing a tendency towards decrease of the microscopic entropy of the «microsystems» (i.e., in Ludwig’s terminology, of the quantum systems considered as interacting with the «macrosystems»). A possible relevance to biological processes is remarked.

In this work we consider the solution thatV. Glaser has recently given to some problems of analytic completion and we investigate the application to the retarded and advanced functions of local quantum field-theory. Presently this application provides the most general method that has been investigated to study analyticity properties of these functions (at least in the case of products of more than two operators). We concentrate here our attention on the question whether in this way analyticity properties on the mass shell may be obtained for physical amplitudes. This program leads to study some simple properties of Glaser’s results and also to survey the already known cases where analyticity properties on the mass shell have been proved. It appears that in these known proofs, besides the assumption of the existence of the vacuum expectation values of the retarded products, some further assumptions or arguments concerning the behaviour at the boundary of the analyticity region are needed. This investigation leads to conclude that this same difficulty to reach the mass shell is present in the new method, except in the case of the vertex function; the only new interesting case in which the boundary of the analyticity region may reach the mass shell is the vacuum expectation value of the product of four operators representing the π-π scattering amplitude. No progress may be obtained for production processes.

The convergence of the expectation valueN of the number of soft photons emitted by a given classical current is studied, using Bloch and Nordsieck’s. approximation. It is found thatN is finite, whenever the particles producing the field are moving is a unite volume of space. Therefore in every experiment that can really be done the number of emitted photons is finite. Bloch and Nordsieck’s divergence, which arises in the case of a charged particle undergoing a transition between two definite momentum states, corresponds to experimental conditions which can not be reached in nature (an infinite volume of space necessary). In the Appendix a less stringent condition for the convergence ofN is derived.
