While Trichodesmium erythraeum is prevalent in the semi-closed SW lagoon of New Caledonia, T. thiebautii is dominant in the more open SE lagoon. This led to the comparison of the two species from the results of two high-frequency surveys focused on T. erythraeum (Rodier and Le Borgne, 2008) and T. thiebautii (the present paper). (1) Environmental conditions and triggers of the blooms are the same: calm weather and/or temperature >26 degrees C, and temporary nutrient inputs are required for both; (2) growth rates under favorable conditions are similar (0.14-0.27 d(-1)) but (3) T. thiebautii has lower net ascent rates along the water column during blooming events, due to distinct buoyancy capacities and the resulting vertical distributions; (4) carbon and dinitrogen fixation rates are not significantly different and contribution of Trichodesmium spp. represent less than 35% and 5% of the total phytoplankton carbon and nitrogen requirements, respectively. It is concluded the two species can be mixed in ecological studies, except for their vertical distributions during the bloom periods.

Time-series sampling, gut content analysis, gut fluorescence measurements, and experiments on feeding, respiration and ammonia excretion were performed at a fixed station (4.5 m depth) on four occasions (from 1990 to 1997) to evaluate the impact of mysids on phytoplankton and zooplankton in a tropical brackish lagoon. Rhopalophthalmus africana , the dominant species, exhibited marked upward migrations at night. Grazing experiments showed that R. africana did not consume sestonic particles in most cases. Predation experiments showed that R. africana actively consumed zooplankton and selected prey according to their size and/or their abundance. The predation rate increased linearly with increasing prey concentration and did not taper at highest prey concentration. A low metabolic oxygen to nitrogen ratio (O/N, 5–13 at:at) reinforced the assumption of a relatively permanent carnivory. Nocturnal increase in gut fullness suggests night-time feeding, but relatively high gut fluorescence during the day, resulting mainly from a fluorimetric tracing of animal prey, suggested also a diurnal ingestion of zooplankton items concentrated near the bottom. The daily grazing impact of R. africana on phytoplankton was very low (0.14% of the in situ chlorophyll concentration), whereas its daily nutrient recycling through excretion (8–15% of the in situ NH 4 concentration) was rather high. The predation impact (33–154% of the zooplankton production) was high and suggests an important role of mysids to explain the low zooplankton/phytoplankton biomass ratio and the low transfer efficiency observed within the food chain of the western part of Ebrie Lagoon.

The horizontal and vertical movements of large bigeye tuna (#Thunnus obesus$ Lowe, 1839 ; 25 to 50 kg) captured in the south Pacific Ocean (French Polynesia) were determined using pressure-sensitive ultrasonic transmitters. Bigeye tuna swam within the first 100 m below the surface during the night-time and at depths between 400 and 500 m during the daytime. The fish exhibited clear relationships with the sound scattering layer (SSL). They followed its vertical movements at dawn and dusk, and were probably foraging on the organisms of the SSL. Bigeye tuna did, however, make regular rapid upward vertical excursions into the warm surface layer, most probably in order to regulate body temperature and, perhaps, to compensate for an accumulated oxygen debt (i.e. to metabolize lactate). The characteristics of these dives differ from those reported from previous studies on smaller bigeye tuna (approximately 12 kg) near the main Hawaiian Islands. During the daytime, the large fish in French Polynesia made upward excursions approximately only every 2.5 h, whereas smaller fish in Hawaiian waters made upward excursions approximately every hour. Our data are the first observations on the role of body size in the vertical behavior of bigeye tuna. (Résumé d'auteur)

Bifrequency acoustic data, hydrological measurements and satellite data were used to study the vertical distribution of macrozooplankton in the Bay of Biscay in relation to the hydrological conditions and fish distribution during spring 2009. The most noticeable result was the observation of a ‘biocline’ during the day i.e., the interface where zooplankton biomass changes more rapidly with depth than it does in the layers above or below. The biocline separated the surface layer, almost devoid of macrozooplankton, from the macrozooplankton-rich deeper layers. It is a specific vertical feature which ties in with the classic diel vertical migration pattern. Spatiotemporal correlations between macrozooplankton and environmental variables (photic depth, thermohaline vertical structure, stratification index and chlorophyll-a) indicate that no single factor explains the macrozooplankton vertical distribution. Rather a set of factors, the respective influence of which varies from region to region depending on the habitat characteristics and the progress of the spring stratification, jointly influence the distribution. In this context, the macrozooplankton biocline is potentially a biophysical response to the search for a particular depth range where light attenuation, thermohaline vertical structure and stratification conditions together provide a suitable alternative to the need for expending energy in reaching deeper water without the risk of being eaten.

International audience; Background Oxygen minimum zones (OMZs) are expanding in the World Ocean as a result of climate change and direct anthropogenic influence. OMZ expansion greatly affects biogeochemical processes and marine life, especially by constraining the vertical habitat of most marine organisms. Currently, monitoring the variability of the upper limit of the OMZs relies on time intensive sampling protocols, causing poor spatial resolution. Methodology/Principal Findings Using routine underwater acoustic observations of the vertical distribution of marine organisms, we propose a new method that allows determination of the upper limit of the OMZ with a high precision. Applied in the eastern South-Pacific, this original sampling technique provides high-resolution information on the depth of the upper OMZ allowing documentation of mesoscale and submesoscale features (e.g., eddies and filaments) that structure the upper ocean and the marine ecosystems. We also use this information to estimate the habitable volume for the world's most exploited fish, the Peruvian anchovy (Engraulis ringens). Conclusions/Significance This opportunistic method could be implemented on any vessel geared with multi-frequency echosounders to perform comprehensive high-resolution monitoring of the upper limit of the OMZ. Our approach is a novel way of studying the impact of physical processes on marine life and extracting valid information about the pelagic habitat and its spatial structure, a crucial aspect of Ecosystem-based Fisheries Management in the current context of climate change.

Five steps were identified: (1) a resting phase, up to day (D) 4 post-hatching; (2) an ascent phase (D1–D4); (3) a plateau (D5–D8), characterized by a wall-attachment behaviour in the subsurface zone; (4) a break-off phase (D9–D13); and (5) a final localization between mid-water and surface, corresponding to the air filling of the swim bladder and to the transition to active, horizontal swimming (D14–D17). Free embryos could be: side-lying (phase 1, late phase 4 and phase 5); lying upright (phases 4 and 5); vertically suspended with adhesion to the wall (phases 2–3 and early phase 4); and in oblique or horizontal position (phase 5). The opening of mouth and anus occurred during phases 2 and 3 and swim bladder filling started on days 13–14. Free embryo mobility was low and stable during the first 5 days and increased regularly thereafter to reach maximal levels on days 14–16. This research provides evidence for a more complex and more variable temporal pattern of free embryo vertical distribution, posture and mobility than previously thought. Cinq étapes ont été identifiées : (1) une phase de repos, pouvant durer jusqu’à 4 jours (J) après éclosion; (2) une phase ascensionnelle (J1–J4); (3) un plateau (J5–J8) caractérisé par un comportement d’adhésion à la paroi en subsurface; (4) une phase de rupture (J9–J13); et (5) une localisation finale entre la mi-profondeur et la surface, correspondant au remplissage de la vessie natatoire et au passage à une nage active dans le plan horizontal (J14–J17). Le degré de mobilité de l’embryon libre, peu élevé et stable au cours des 5 premiers jours, a ensuite augmenté de façon régulière pour atteindre les valeurs les plus élevées entre J14 et J16. La présente étude met en évidence pour la répartition spatiale, la posture et la mobilité de l’embryon libre l’existence d’une séquence temporelle plus complexe et plus variable que ne le suggéraient les connaissances antérieures.

High resolution hydrographic observations of temperature and salinity are used to analyse the subsurface circulation along the coast of North Brazil, off the Amazon mouth, between 2° S and 6° N. Observations are presented from four cruises carried out in different periods of the year (March–May 1995, May–June 1999, July–August 2001 and October–November 1997). Numerical model outputs complement the results of the shipboard measurements, and are used to complete the descriptions of mesoscale circulation. The Salinity Maximum Waters are here analyzed, principally in order to describe the penetration of waters originating in the Southern Hemisphere toward the Northern Hemisphere through the North Brazil Current (NBC)/North Brazil Undercurrent (NBUC). Our results show that, if the Equatorial Undercurrent (EUC) is fed by Northern Atlantic Waters, this contribution may only occur in the ocean interior, east of the western boundary around 100 m depth. Modeling results indicate a southward penetration of the Western Boundary Undercurrent (WBUC) below the thermocline, along the North Brazilian coast into the EUC or the North Equatorial Undercurrent (NEUC) (around 48° W–3° N). The WBUC in the region does not flow more south than 3° N. The northern waters are diverted eastward either by the NBC retroflection or by the northern edge of the associated clockwise rings. The existence of subsurface mesoscale rings associated to the NBC retroflection is evidenced, without any signature in the surface layer, so confirming earlier numerical model outputs. These subsurface anticyclones, linked to the NBC/NBUC retroflection into the North Equatorial Undercurrent and the EUC, contribute to the transport of South Atlantic high salinity water into the Northern Hemisphere.

Euendolithic microorganisms (boring microflora) – cyanobacteria, algae and fungi – colonize all carbonate substrates in modern coral reefs and are distributed worldwide. Recent studies showed that in dead carbonate, they are important primary producers and are fed upon by various excavating invertebrate and vertebrate grazers, contributing greatly to biodestruction processes (bioerosion) and sedimentation. Additionally, it has been shown that in some live calcifying organisms, they either inflict damages to live tissues or provide a benefit to the host, depending on the euendolithic community involved (parasitic or mutualistic relationships). Based on those recent studies, the following question is raised: Are euendoliths key organisms in the functioning and maintenance of coral reefs? Reviewed literature includes studies on (1) the mechanisms used by euendoliths to penetrate into carbonate substrates (production of acids or chelating fluids; use of the products of photosynthesis / respiration and / or calcium pumps), (2) their roles in reef bioerosion and sedimentation (major roles), (3) their metabolism (important rates of production), (4) their interactions with their live hosts (symbiosis, mutualism and / or parasitism) and (5) the effects of various environmental factors such as eutrophication, sedimentation and rising atmospheric pCO2 on euendolith activities. The review concentrates on modern coral reef ecosystems.

In the scope of the study of the "on-bottom/off-bottom" mortality model in the south of the Marennes Oléron Bay, the result of the 2003 multidisciplinary study (Dynamor) appears to be the hypothesis of an acute stress, "ultimate" trigger of the mortality episodes in June. In 2004 we aim to look for the nature of this stress through the physico-chemical analysis of the sediment (Eh, pH, sulphides and ammoniacal nitrogen), the organic matter and chlorophyll load on the surface of the sediment between April and July. Herbicides are also measured in the water column, south of the bay (Seudre), during the same period. A "precocious" (around the first week of June) and "weak" (lower mortality rate on this working site since 1997) mortality peak happens when the average sea water temperature is still lower than 18°C. The hypothesis is the following: following the degradation of the organic matter, the ammoniacal nitrogen flux develops a few centimetres inside the sediment. This degradation intensifies in May-June when successive anticyclonic episodes warm up the sediment. At around 19°C, the bacterial degradation of the organic matter accelerates, releasing an important ammoniacal nitrogen flux that the microphytobenthos cannot totally consume. Under the probable action of the NH3 ion, the phytoplankton dies (drop of the chlorophyll level from 300 to 80 mg m-2) causing a mini dystrophic crisis (or mini "malalaïgue"!). The nitrite peak will be identified later in June. This organic matter degradation process under bacterial action is strongly linked with thermic conditions, and could explain the correlation between the temperature of 19°C and some mortality episodes. The analogy of the thermic profiles obtained 15cm inside the sediment and during slack water at high tide explains (1) the direction of the study decided upon in looking for the causes of mortality in the water column and (2) its re-direction towards the sediment. The foraminifer Ammonia tepida seems to be an excellent marker throughout this sensitive period. This important NH3 release could be the ultimate stress triggering the mortality episode in stocks cultivated next to the sediment. This result has to be confirmed. This disappearance of the phytobenthos (estimated through chlorophyll a analysis) from the mudflat of this working site also coincides with a glyphosate peak identified in the water column during the second week of June; glyphosate whose degradation products can be found in the interstitial water of the sediments, south of the Marennes Oléron Bay. If the cause and effect relationship between the disappearance of the trophic resource and the presence of herbicides in the water column of the sediments in the south of the bay has to be specified (do these concentrations > 1 μgL-1 affect the environment?), the correlation of the facts also has to be discussed., Dans le cadre de l'étude du modèle de mortalité plat-table dans le sud du Bassin de Marennes Oléron , l'hypothèse d'un stress aigu, "ultime" déclencheur des épisodes de mortalité du mois de juin, apparaît comme un résultat de l'étude pluridisciplinaire menée en 2003 (Dynamor). L'objectif en 2004 est de chercher à préciser la nature de ce stress grâce à l'analyse physico-chimique du sédiment (Eh, pH, Sulfure et Azote ammoniacal), la charge en matière organique et chlorophylle a en surface du sédiment entre Avril et Juillet. L'hypothèse formulée est la suivante : Le flux d'azote ammoniacal se développe à quelques cm dans le sédiment suite à la dégradation de la matière organique. Cette dégradation s'intensifie en mai-juin au cours des épisodes anticycloniques successifs qui réchauffent le sédiment. Aux alentours de 19°C, les processus de dégradation bactériennes de la matière organique piégée dans le sédiment s'accélère brutalement, libérant un flux important d'azote ammoniacal que le microphytobenthos ne parvient plus à consommer totalement. Sous l'action alors probable de l'ion NH3, le phytoplancton meurt (chute de la chlorophylle a qui passe de 300 à 80 mg m-2) provoquant ainsi une mini crise dystrophique (ou mini "malalaïgue"!). Un pic de nitrite sera identifié un peu plus tard dans le mois de juin. Ces processus de dégradation de la matière organique sous action bactérienne sont fortement liés aux conditions thermiques et pourrait expliquer la corrélation établie entre la température de 19°C et certains épisodes de mortalité. L'analogie des profils thermiques obtenus à 15cm de profondeur dans le sédiment et à l'étale de pleine mer explique (1) l'orientation de rechercher les causes de mortalité dans la colonne d'eau et (2) réoriente maintenant cette recherche vers le sédiment. Le foraminifère Ammonia tepida semble par ailleurs constituer un excellent marqueur durant cette période sensible. Le relargage important de NH3 pourrait constituer l'ultime stress provoquant l'épisode de mortalité affectant les cheptels en élevage à proximité du sédiment. Ce résultat demande à être confirmé. Cette disparition brutale du phytobenthos (estimé par la chlorophylle a) sur la vasière de ce site atelier est également concomitante avec un pic de glyphosate identifié dans la colonne d'eau durant la deuxième semaine du mois de Juin; glyphosate dont les produits de dégradation se retrouvent également dans l'eau interstitielle des sédiments du sud du Bassin de Marennes Oléron. Si la relation de cause à effet entre disparition de la ressource trophique et présence d'herbicides dans la colonne d'eau et le sédiment du sud bassin doit être précisée (ces concentrations > 1 μgL-1 ont-elles un effet dans l'environnement ?), la concordance des faits est également un résultat qui doit être discuté.

The characterization of the vertical distribution in a maize crop was investigated. Chlorophyll content measurements were performed on each leaf of several plants along the crop cycle. Those measurements, as well as the surface measurements and the leaf insertion height measurements give the vertical distribution of chlorophyll pigments within the canopy. The chlorophyll content is higher for the middle leaves than for the top and bottom leaves of the plant. The impact of chlorophyll vertical distribution on the leaf reflectance response was investigated. For this purpose, the PROSPECT model was applied on multiple layers, reproducing the observed chlorophyll profile.

International audience; Marine snow ( MS) distribution from the surface to 1000 m depth was determined in the equatorial Pacific using the underwater video profiler during the Etude du Broutage en Zone Equatoriale cruise in fall 1996. The latitudinal transect was carried out at 17 stations along the 180degrees meridian from 8 degreesS to 8 degreesN during a cold phase of El Nino-Southern Oscillation. Higher MS concentrations were found below the equatorial zone than poleward. At the equator the estimated integrated MS carbon m(-2) in the upper kilometer was 5.7 g m(-2), while both southward and northward (between 1degrees and 8degrees) the mean integrated MS carbon was about 2.7 g. m(-2). In the upper 50 m the MS carbon was twofold lower than the combined carbon of autotrophic and heterotrophic protists and four times lower than the mesozooplankton carbon biomass, both measured concurrently during the cruise. Different water bodies had different MS content. The highest concentrations were found in the South Equatorial Current, the South Equatorial Counter Current, and the North Equatorial Countercurrent. Tropical waters at the south in the South Subsurface Countercurrents and the warm northern superficial waters had the lowest MS biomass. Mechanistically, a latitudinal ``conveyor belt'', a poleward divergence of upwelled waters that return to the equator after being downwelled at north and south convergent zones, may partially explain the vertical distribution of particulate matter observed during the studied period.

This study compares detailed, nearly continuous, observations on bigeye tuna, Thunnus obesus equipped with electronic tags, with discrete observations on a larger number of individuals from fishing experiments in order to validate the use of instrumented longlines to study the vertical distribution of fish. We show that the depth distributions obtained from the two different observation techniques regarding different environmental variables (temperature, dissolved oxygen (DO), prey distribution) are similar. Bigeye tuna do not seem to be attracted by baits in the vertical dimension (no modification of their vertical distribution by the fishing gear), which allows the use of instrumented longlines to study the vertical behaviour of pelagic species. This technique, when used with appropriate deployment strategy, could therefore represent an alternative to electronic tags (acoustic or archival tags) when there is a need to determine the vertical distribution of fish species by size or sex, in different environments for the study of fishery interactions.

We studied relationships between tropical tunas (albacore (Thunnus alalunga), bigeye (Thunnus obesus), and yellowfin (Thunnus albacares)) and their biotic and abiotic environments through simultaneous acoustic observations of tunas and their prey, experimental longline catch, and oceanographic data in French Polynesia. Vertical habitat limits were estimated based on temperature and dissolved oxygen at capture data. We then studied tuna-micronekton relationships to better understand how tuna occupy the pelagic space, At a regional scale, tunas were more abundant in areas rich in prey with favourable hydrological conditions. Inside such areas, at the scale of a longline set, however, the longline catches were maximal only when prey were not distributed in dense patches (except for yellowfin tuna). We interpreted this result by considering that areas with high prey abundance attract tunas, but at a small scale, if prey are patchy distributed, tunas are more inclined to feed on them rather than on longline baits. The effect of patches on yellowfin tuna catch per unit effort (CPUE) does not appear likely because this species also feeds on the mixed layer, where patch density was very low. Not only hydrological characteristics, but also prey density and prey patch characteristics, should be taken into account for interpreting longline CPUE data., Thunnus obesus, et thon à nageoires jaunes, Thunnus albacares) à leurs environnements biotique et abiotique. Pour ce faire, nous avons réalisé simultanément, en Polynésie Française, des observations acoustiques des thons et de leurs proies, des pêches à l'aide d'une palangre instrumentée et des mesures hydrologiques. Des limites d'habitat vertical des thons calculées sur la base de données de température et d'oxygène dissous sont proposées. Nous étudions ensuite les relations thons-micronecton afin de mieux comprendre la stratégie d'occupation de l'espace des thons. A une échelle régionale, les thons sont plus abondants dans des zones riches en proies avec des conditions hydrologiques favorables. Cependant, à l'intérieur de telles zones, les captures sont maximales lorsque les proies ne sont pas distribuées sous forme de patchs (sauf pour le thon à nageoires jaunes). Nous interprétons ces résultats en considérant que les zones de fortes abondances en proies attirent les thons mais, qu'à une échelle fine, si les proies sont distribuées sous la forme de patchs denses, les thons s'en nourrissent préférentiellement, au détriment des appâts de la palangre. Ces patchs ne semblent pas influencer les prises par unité d'effort (PUE) des thons à nageoires jaunes, probablement parce que cette espèce se nourrit également dans la couche homogène où la densité en patchs est très faible. Les caractéristiques hydrologiques, mais également la densité en proies et leur type de distribution, devraient donc être pris en compte pour l'interprétation des données de PUE.

Un modèle de logique floue du comportement des thons autour de dispositifs de concentration de poissons (DCP) est développé pour reproduire les différences individuelles observées dans les mouvements horizontaux à partir d'expériences de télémétrie ultrasonique. Dans ce modèle, le comportement d'un individu est basé sur son environnement local (DCP et proies) et sur son état interne (taux de remplissage de l'estomac), qui dépend de ses actions passées. Des capteurs internes déterminent la motivation du poisson, qui, combinée avec des capteurs externes, détermine ses mouvements. Les informations sensorielles et la motivation sont modélisées avec des ensembles flous. Un individu est toujours attiré par un DCP s'il se trouve dans un certain rayon autour de celui-ci. Le temps passé autour d'un DCP dépend de la motivation alimentaire du poisson et de son environnement local. Si le poisson n'a pas faim, il reste autour du DCP. Sinon, le poisson doit rechercher de la nourriture, et peut ainsi quitter le DCP s'il ne trouve pas de proies aux alentours. En variant les conditions environnementales autour du DCP, ce modèle reproduit les différents mouvements horizontaux observés chez les thons. Le modèle est ensuite étendu pour permettre la coexistence de plusieurs individus, sans aucune interaction directe ou indirecte entre ceux-ci. Ceci permet d'étudier les effets des comportements individuels sur les agrégations de thons autour de DCP. Le modèle prédit avec précision les dynamiques temporelles des agrégations de thons autour de DCP. En simulant différents réseaux de DCP, le modèle permet d'estimer la meilleure organisation spatiale des DCP. (Résumé d'auteur)

Trois espèces de thons constituent la ressource cible des pêcheries palangrières en Polynésie française : le germon (#Thunnus alalunga$), le thon à nageoires jaunes (#Thunnus albacares$) et le thon obèse (#Thunnus obesus$). Les distributions géographique et bathymétrique de cette ressource sont étroitement liées aux paramètres hydrologiques et trophiques de l'environnement. Dans le cadre du programme Ecotap, des pêches expérimentales réalisées à l'aide d'une palangre instrumentée ont été couplées à des relevés hydrologiques et des prospections acoustiques. La structure hydrologique est étudiée à l'aide de profils de température, salinité et d'oxygène dissous jusqu'à 500 mètres de profondeur. Une analyse typologique des stations menée à partir de ces variables permet de définir trois zones hydrologiques. Les écho-prospections réalisées entre 0 et 500 mètres, à l'aide d'un sondeur Simrad EK 500 permettent de mesurer une réponse acoustique considérée comme représentative de la biomasse en poissons micronectoniques. Cette biomasse est considérée comme un indice de la capacité trophique du milieu pour les thons. L'étude de la distribution verticale et horizontale du micronecton permet de définir trois zones assez similaires aux zones hydrologiques quant à leur distribution spatiale. La distribution des thons est étudiée à partir des captures réalisées à la palangre instrumentée ainsi qu'à l'aide des échos individualisés détectés par acoustique pouvant être considérés comme étant des thonidés. Dans les deux cas, des informations spatio-temporelles précises sont disponibles pour chaque poisson. Les distributions horizontale et verticale des thons sont étudiées en fonction du volume d'habitat et de la capacité trophqiue du milieu. Les variations spatio-temporelles d'abondance du stock de bobo de Guinée sont analysées sur la période 1985/98 par trois catégories d'approches complémentaires. Premièrement, une évaluation du stock est conduite par les méthodes d'analyse de cohorte et de rendement par recrue, en s'appuyant sur les statistiques de captures disponsibles pour la période récente (96/98). Deuxièmement, des indices annuels de densité sont calculés par modélisation linéaire des données des campagnes de chalutages scientifiques, réalisées depuis 1985 dans les strates bathymétriques de 5 à 30 m. Enfin, l'estimation des surfaces des strates permet de mettre en cohérence ces deux types de résultats et d'estimer un modèle de répartition des biomasses en début et fin de période, dans l'ensemble des strates de 0 à 30 m. Dans la période récente, la biomasse du stock est estimée à environ 9000 tonnes ; l'exploitation, très majoritairement liée à la pêche artisanale, conduirait à une situation globale de pleine exploitation. Les indices de densité montrent une forte diminution de l'abondance du bobo, entre début et fin de période. Cette diminution est particulièrement marquée dans les strates de forte abondance, entre 5 et 10 M. Le modèle de répartition des biomasses, montre qu'une part essentielle du stock (probablement supérieure à 75%) se situe dans la strate la plus côtière (0 à 5m) qui échappe au navire océanographique. La biomasse de début de période, qui correspondait à une situation proche de l'état vierge, est estimée à environ 18 000 tonnes. Le développement de l'exploitation s'est ainsi traduit par une baisse d'abondance, avec un impact qui s'avère être différent selon les strates bathymétiques. L'estimation des stocks de carbone (C) organique des sols est d'une importance considérable, en raison de leur rôle en tant que source ou puits de composés carbonés vis-à-vis de l'atmosphère. L'objectif de ce travail est de comparer différentes méthodes d'estimation des stocks de C organique des sols forestiers. Nous présentons ici des résultats concernant l'évaluation de ces stocks en milieu tropical, pour l'état du Rondônia (Amazonie brésilienne) qui est une zone de forte expansion des défrichements. Une base de données a été élaborée à partir des résultats d'analyses d'horizons de sols échantillonnés lors de campagnes de prospection réalisées à la fin des années 70 et au début des années 80. La densité apparente est estimée à partir de régressions multiples faisant intervenir d'autres paramètres édaphiques disponibles. Nous comparons les stocks calculés par sommation des données disponibles jusqu'à un mètre de profondeur, ou par intégration d'un modèle de répartition verticale du carbone. Nous comparons également les stocks régionaux obtenus soit à partir des unités cartographiques, soit par des interpolations géostatistiques des stocks totaux ou des trois paramètres du modèle de répartition verticale. Même si les effets "pépite" sont très importants, les résultats de la validation croisée et de la validation externe prouvent que ces modèles sont valides. La démarche suivie permet une estimation relativement précise des stocks de C organique des sols d'un vaste secteur géographique. Cette démarche devrait permettre une meilleure quantification de l'effet des principaux déterminants (climat, texture, végétation, géologie, topographie, etc.) de la répartition spatiale et verticale du carbone dans ces sols. Enfin, une estimation fiable des stocks préalables au défrichement constitue la base indispensable à l'évaluation de leur impact sur le bilan atmosphérique en carbone. (Résumé d'auteur)

L'étude concerne les déplacements verticaux des thonidés face aux contraintes du milieu profond dans l'océan Pacifique Sud tropical dans la ZEE de la Polynésie française. Les thons constituent une ressource très importante au niveau de la pêche, et la connaissance de leurs stratégies et mécanismes adaptatifs en environnement naturel extrême permettrait de mieux comprendre leur comportement de manière indirecte. Les résultats confirment l'hypothèse de l'auteur quant au rôle très important joué par la vessie gazeuse et les branchies pour la gestion des gaz dissous et de ce fait, pour la colonisation de niches écologiques plus profondes malgré les contraintes environnementales fortes (pression, température...)

Two acoustical surveys took place in October 1993 and February 1994, covering the main part of the Java Sea, below a 50 m depth. The echo-integration process was performed through a BioSonics 120 kHz Dual Beam echo-sounder. Fish shoal characteristics and their behavioural aspects were observed. The shoals' configurations were extracted from the echograms and quantified. This information allows the spatial and bathymetric distribution to be presented. An analysis on the abundance and the distribution of shoals is proposed, as well as their contribution to the global clusters and a description of their behaviour during the day and night periods. Analyses of the acoustical data collected during several cruises made in the Java Sea from 1991 to 1994, in the context of the Pelfish project, have facilitated the elaboration of a biological model based on three groups of fish, each having particular distribution characteristics. This paper shows how the analysis of bathymetric distribution on the same database gives valuable information on fish behaviour, and how this method could be used first to define different groups of fish (in our case, to increase the types up to five groups) and secondly, to raise several questions on the determinants of the fish distribution. Interstitial water samples, from a borehole drilled in 1992 to 150 m inside the north barrier reef of Tahiti, have been analysed monthly for : temperature, salinity, dissolved inorganic nutrients (PO4, SiO4, DIN, DIC), O2, pH and alkalinity. Other parameters such as dissolved organics (DON, DOC) were also measured in 1994 in two sets of samples. These data show : significant differences with the adjacent ocean, including a lower density for any given depth, leading to an inevitable upward movement of interstitial water ; decrease of pH, alkalinity, DIN and DIC with depth, from the reef crest down to the carbonate - basalt interface at 116 m ; strong positive gradients of DON and DOC inside the basaltic foundation (116-150 m), which then constitutes a large organic reservoir. These results suggest that the organics coming from the basalt foundation (first end-member) are, during their circulation through the carbonates, transformed into inorganic nutrients, with consumption of dissolved oxygen. A second end-member is the oceanic surface water injected by waves forcing through the top part of the reef : the mixing of the interstitial water with this nutrients-depleted, oxygen-saturated water tends to prevent anoxia and to lower nutrients concentration. The specific properties found in the basalt interstitial waters - low alkalinity, high silicate and high DON-DOC content - are convergent with data obtained in other basaltic crusts where thermally driven-hydrothermal circulation is a general rule. La dynamique de la matière organique dans le sol est un déterminant majeur du fonctionnement de l'écosystème. L'agent principal de cette dynamique est la microflore hétérotrophe du sol dont les activités minéralisatrices conditionnent et dépendent de la quantité et de la qualité de la matière organique présente dans le sol. Notre objectif était d'étudier les déterminismes chimiques et microbiens de la dynamique de la matière organique et de la minéralisation de l'azote dans les sols de différents faciès de savane et de forêt d'une savane humide (Lamto, Côte d'Ivoire). Au sein de l'un des faciès de savane, une étude détaillée a été menée dans le but d'évaluer les liens entre les propriétés chimiques des particules de matière organique et les activités microbiennes de minéralisation du carbone et de l'azote. Ces résultats ont confirmé la faible teneur en matière organique des sols dans les écosystèmes de Lamto. La variabilité des ressources dans les sols de Lamto se manifeste à la fois du point de vue quantitatif (distribution de la matière organique) et qualitatif (composition chimique de la matière organique). La matière organique des sols est essentiellement composée de produits ayant déjà subi de nombreuses transformations microbiennes. Il en résulte un faible niveau d'activité microbienne même en conditions optimales. L'origine ligneuse ou herbacée, et les rapports C/N de la matière organique du sol semblent avoir peu d'influence à court terme, sur l'activité des micro-organismes du sol. L'observation de la réponse de ceux-ci à l'apport de substrats chimiquement simples a confirmé le rôle prépondérant, à court terme, du carbone vis-à-vis de la minéralisation de l'azote : les micro-organismes ne manquent pas de substrat organique azoté, mais de substrat organique carboné facilement assimilable... The coastal borders of northern Java and eastern Sumatra have been prospected during the acoustic surveys, in the depth of about 115 to 50 m, in wet season. The measures of relative density per nautical mile, the vertical distribution of the abundance and shoals have been analyzed. The general characteristics can be drawn-up : they are the extension of an abundant semipelagic fauna occupying the bathymetric strata from 25 to 45 m, and the existence of a dominant pelagic fauna are more coastal. Shoals, low reverberating, are present in all areas but are dominant in the coastal border ; the more reverberating aggregations are more off shore. From the East to the West, their bathymetric localization increases in the sectors near oceanic influences, they are more dense and near the surface. From the East to the West, the abundance of schools and total density decrease. This fact seemingly has to do with the extension of the relatively shallow zone. Two sectors show a particularity : the Bay of Semarang with densities sometimes big, which could be related to the seasonal topography, and the surroundings of the Sunda Strait, zone of passage and exchange for the deep pelagic population. These observations globally confirm the stratification tentative which was carried out during the Workshop of 1994, in specifying the geographical extension of the coastal stratum, very narrow in front of Java, and in proposing that one part of the semipelagic population which constitutes the wealth of the East of Java in dry season, should migrate in wet season towards the slopes of the coastal border. La dynamique des populations de nématodes entomopathogènes dans des sols horticoles a été étudiée par des prélèvements mensuels en huit sites de Catalogne (nord-est de l'Espagne) pendant 14 mois. Ces nématodes entomopathogènes ont été détectés dans six des huit sites et ont continué à l'être quels qu'aient été les traitements agricoles pratiqués sur ces sites. Pendant cette étude, les sites ont été labourés, détruisant ainsi l'habitat naturel des nématodes, puis laissés en jachère pendant plusieurs mois, sans que la présence des nématodes n'en paraisse affectée. Cependant, une influence saisonnière peut être observée, la présence des nématodes étant plus faible pendant les mois d'été où la température est élevée. Cette influence saisonnière apparaît également affecter la répartition verticale des nématodes qui migrent vers les couches plus profondes du sol, vraisemblablement pour éviter les effets néfastes de la température et du manque d'humidité. Les résultats de cette étude montrent que les populations naturelles de nématodes entomopathogènes sont capables de persister et de survivre dans le sol pendant de longues périodes en s'adaptant aux conditions fluctuantes et adverses de leur habitat naturel. Not available, La distribution de la microflore dans un profil de sol ainsi que son comportement métabolique ont été caractérisés au cours de ce travail. L'installation d'un dispositif expérimental sur une parcelle cultivée de Bourgogne nous a permis de suivre les variations des facteurs physiques comme la température et la teneur en oxygène à différentes profondeurs dans le sol. Les fluctuations saisonnières de ces 2 facteurs permettent une activité microbienne aérobie jusqu'a une profondeur de 5 mètres. Nous avons mis en évidence que la microflore du sous-sol est à prédominance bactérienne. Le nombre de microorganismes aérobies est de 10^7 g-¹ sol et décroit à 10^5-10^6 g-¹ sol à partir de 60 centimètres de profondeur puis reste constant au-delà. Les mesures d'estimations de la teneur en carbone microbien (estimées par les méthodes biocidales et physiologiques) corroborent le résultat précédent. Nous avons aussi déterminé que le coefficient de conversion du carbone extrait par la méthode de fumigation-extraction en carbone microbien, Kec, variait avec la profondeur. Nos résultats montrent l'existence d'une activité microbienne aérobie diversifiée jusqu'à 5 mètres de profondeur. Toutefois, la vitesse de minéralisation des composés organiques (glucose, l'acétate, l'acide benzoïque) diminue avec la profondeur et cette diminution semble être liée à celle de la biomasse microbienne. La diminution de l'activité hétérotrophe de la microflore du sous-sol, à savoir une diminution des paramètres Vm et Km, met en évidence une adaptation des microorganismes aux conditions oligotrophes de leur environnement. Les études de dégradation des molécules xénobiotiques telles que le 2,4-D et l'atrazine dans le sous-sol montreraient la nature co-métabolique de la dégradation

Les déplacements verticaux diurnes de trois albacores, observés à partir de marquages acoustiques réalisés dans l'Océan Indien occidental (archipel des Comores), sont mis en parallèle avec la répartion verticale de la température et de la concentration en oxygène dissous. Deux types de comportements, albacores associés à un Dispositif de Concentration de Poisson (DCP) et albacores non associés à un DCP, peuvent être distingués par les relations entre les profondeurs de nage et la structure verticale de la température et de l'oxygène dissous (épaisseur de la couche homogène, de la thermocline et de l'oxycline) observées dans la zone des marquages. Les gradients de température et de la concentration en oxygène dissous se révèlent être les facteurs essentiels qui déterminent les déplacements verticaux des albacores. Un examen des données océanographiques collectées dans l'ensemble de l'Océan Indien tropical occidental (10°N-20°S, 40°E-80°E) révèle que la profondeur d'immersion de l'oxycline correspond très largement à celle où des valeurs de concentration en oxygène dissous de 4,2 à 4,3 ml/l sont observées.
