We apply the HanleRT Tenerife Inversion Code to the spectro-polarimetric observations obtained by the Chromospheric LAyer SpectroPolarimeter. This suborbital space experiment measured the variation with wavelength of the four Stokes parameters in the near-ultraviolet spectral region of the Mg II h & k lines over a solar disk area containing part of an active region plage and the edge of a sunspot penumbra. We infer the stratification of the temperature, the electron density, the line of-sight velocity, the micro-turbulent velocity, and the longitudinal component of the magnetic field from the observed intensity and circular polarization profiles. The inferred model atmosphere shows larger temperature and electron density in the plage and the superpenumbra regions than in the quiet regions. The shape of the plage region in terms of its brightness is similar to the pattern of the inferred longitudinal component of the magnetic field in the chromosphere, as well as to that of the overlying moss observed by AIA in the 171 A band, which suggests a similar magnetic origin for the heating in both the plage and the moss region. Moreover, this heating is particularly significant in the regions with larger inferred magnetic flux. In contrast, in the superpenumbra, the regions with larger electron density and temperature are usually found in between these regions with larger magnetic flux, suggesting that the details of the heating mechanism in the chromosphere of the superpenumbra may be different to those in the plage, but with the magnetic field still playing a key role., Comment: Accepted for publication in the Astrophysical Journal

We present the SWAP Filter: an azimuthally varying, radial normalizing filter specifically developed for EUV images of the solar corona, named for the Sun Watcher with Active Pixels and Image Processing (SWAP) instrument on the Project for On-Board Autonomy 2 spacecraft. We discuss the origins of our technique, its implementation and key user-configurable parameters, and highlight its effects on data via a series of examples. We discuss the filter's strengths in a data environment in which wide field-of-view observations that specifically target the low signal-to-noise middle corona are newly available and expected to grow in the coming years., Comment: Contact D. Radiative transfer investigations of the solar Mg II h and k resonance lines around 280~nm showed that, while their circular polarization (Stokes V) signals arise from the Zeeman effect, the linear polarization profiles (Stokes Q and U) are dominated by the scattering of anisotropic radiation and the Hanle and magneto-optical (MO) effects. Using the unprecedented observations of the Mg II and Mn I resonance lines obtained by the Chromospheric LAyer Spectro-Polarimeter (CLASP2), here we investigate how the linear polarization signals at different wavelengths (i.e., at the center, and at the near and far wings of the k line) vary with the longitudinal component of the magnetic field ($B_{L}$) at their approximate height of formation. The $B_{L}$ is estimated from the V signals in the aforementioned spectral lines. Particular attention is given to the following quantities that are expected to be influenced by the presence of magnetic fields through the Hanle and MO effects: the sign of the U signals, the total linear polarization amplitude ($LP$) and its direction ($\chi$) with respect to a reference direction. We find that at the center and near wings of the $k$ line, the behavior of these quantities is significantly different in the observed quiet and plage regions, and that both $LP$ and $\chi$ seem to depend on $B_{L}$. We apply the Tenerife Inversion Code (TIC) to the plage spectropolarimetric observations obtained by the Chromospheric LAyer SpectroPolarimeter (CLASP2). These unprecedented data consist of full Stokes profiles in the spectral region around the Mg II h and k lines for a single slit position, with around two thirds of the 200 arcsec slit crossing a plage region and the rest crossing an enhanced network. A former analysis of these data had allowed us to infer the longitudinal component of the magnetic field by applying the weak field approximation (WFA) to the circular polarization profiles, and to assign the inferred magnetic fields to different layers of the solar atmosphere based on the results of previous theoretical radiative transfer investigations. In this work, we apply the recently developed TIC to the same data. We obtain the stratified model atmosphere that fits the intensity and circular polarization profiles at each position along the spectrograph slit and we compare our results for the longitudinal component of the magnetic field with the previously obtained WFA results, highlighting the generally good agreement in spite of the fact that the WFA is known to produce an underestimation when applied to the outer lobes of the Mg II h and k circular polarization profiles. Finally, we use the inverted model atmospheres to give a rough estimation of the energy that could be carried by Alfv\`en waves propagating along the chromosphere in the plage and network regions, showing that it is sufficient to compensate the estimated energy losses in the chromosphere of solar active regions., Comment: Accepted for publication in The Astrophysical Journal

The middle corona, the region roughly spanning heliocentric altitudes from $1.5$ to $6\,R_\odot$, encompasses almost all of the influential physical transitions and processes that govern the behavior of coronal outflow into the heliosphere. Eruptions that could disrupt the near-Earth environment propagate through it. Importantly, it modulates inflow from above that can drive dynamic changes at lower heights in the inner corona. Consequently, this region is essential for comprehensively connecting the corona to the heliosphere and for developing corresponding global models. Nonetheless, because it is challenging to observe, the middle corona has been poorly studied by major solar remote sensing missions and instruments, extending back to the Solar and Heliospheric Observatory (SoHO) era. Thanks to recent advances in instrumentation, observational processing techniques, and a realization of the importance of the region, interest in the middle corona has increased. Although the region cannot be intrinsically separated from other regions of the solar atmosphere, there has emerged a need to define the region in terms of its location and extension in the solar atmosphere, its composition, the physical transitions it covers, and the underlying physics believed to be encapsulated by the region. The outer atmosphere of the Sun is composed of plasma heated to temperatures well in excess of the visible surface. We investigate short cool and warm (<1 MK) loops seen in the core of an active region to address the role of field-line braiding in energising these structures. We report observations from the High-resolution Coronal imager (Hi-C) that have been acquired in a coordinated campaign with the Interface Region Imaging Spectrograph (IRIS). In the core of the active region, the 172 A band of Hi-C and the 1400 A channel of IRIS show plasma loops at different temperatures that run in parallel. There is a small but detectable spatial offset of less than 1 arcsec between the loops seen in the two bands. Most importantly, we do not see observational signatures that these loops might be twisted around each other. Considering the scenario of magnetic braiding, our observations of parallel loops imply that the stresses put into the magnetic field have to relax while the braiding is applied: the magnetic field never reaches a highly braided state on these length-scales comparable to the separation of the loops. This supports recent numerical 3D models of loop braiding in which the effective dissipation is sufficiently large that it keeps the magnetic field from getting highly twisted within a loop., Comment: Accepted for publication in the Astrophysical Journal, 24 pages, 18 figures

Routine ultraviolet imaging of the Sun's upper atmosphere shows the spectacular manifestation of solar activity; yet we remain blind to its main driver, the magnetic field. Here we report unprecedented spectropolarimetric observations of an active region plage and its surrounding enhanced network, showing circular polarization in ultraviolet (Mg II $h$ & $k$ and Mn I) and visible (Fe I) lines. We infer the longitudinal magnetic field from the photosphere to the very upper chromosphere. At the top of the plage chromosphere the field strengths reach more than 300 gauss, strongly correlated with the Mg II $k$ line core intensity and the electron pressure. This unique mapping shows how the magnetic field couples the different atmospheric layers and reveals the magnetic origin of the heating in the plage chromosphere., Comment: 50 pages, 11 figures, 1 table, published in Science Advances

The Marshall Grazing Incidence Spectrometer {\it MaGIXS} is a sounding rocket experiment that will observe the soft X-ray spectrum of the Sun from 24 - 6.0 \AA\ (0.5 - 2.0 keV) and is scheduled for launch in 2021. Component and instrument level calibrations for the {\it MaGIXS} instrument are carried out using the X-ray and Cryogenic Facility (XRCF) at NASA Marshall Space Flight Center. In this paper, we present the calibration of the incident X-ray flux from the electron impact source with different targets at the XRCF using a CCD camera; the photon flux at the CCD was low enough to enable its use as a "photon counter" i.e. the ability to identify individual photon hits and calculate their energy. The goal of this paper is two-fold: 1) to confirm that the flux measured by the XRCF beam normalization detectors is consistent with the values reported in the literature and therefore reliable for {\it MaGIXS} calibration and 2) to develop a method of counting photons in CCD images that best captures their number and energy, Comment: 11 pages, 8 figures, Accepted for publication in The Astrophysical Journal

The Daniel K. Inouye Solar Telescope (DKIST) will revolutionize our ability to measure, understand and model the basic physical processes that control the structure and dynamics of the Sun and its atmosphere. The first-light DKIST images, released publicly on 29 January 2020, only hint at the extraordinary capabilities which will accompany full commissioning of the five facility instruments. With this Critical Science Plan (CSP) we attempt to anticipate some of what those capabilities will enable, providing a snapshot of some of the scientific pursuits that the Daniel K. Inouye Solar Telescope hopes to engage as start-of-operations nears. The work builds on the combined contributions of the DKIST Science Working Group (SWG) and CSP Community members, who generously shared their experiences, plans, knowledge and dreams. Discussion is primarily focused on those issues to which DKIST will uniquely contribute.

Plasma outflows from the edges of active regions have been suggested as a possible source of the slow solar wind. Spectroscopic measurements show that these outflows have an enhanced elemental composition, which is a distinct signature of the slow wind. Current spectroscopic observations, however, do not have sufficient spatial resolution to distinguish what structures are being measured or to determine the driver of the outflows. The High-resolution Coronal Imager (Hi-C) flew on a sounding rocket in May, 2018, and observed areas of active region outflow at the highest spatial resolution ever achieved (250 km). Here we use the Hi-C data to disentangle the outflow composition signatures observed with the Hinode satellite during the flight. We show that there are two components to the outflow emission: a substantial contribution from expanded plasma that appears to have been expelled from closed loops in the active region core, and a second contribution from dynamic activity in active region plage, with a composition signature that reflects solar photospheric abundances. The two competing drivers of the outflows may explain the variable composition of the slow solar wind., Comment: To be published in The Astrophysical Journal. Following the success of the first mission, the High-Resolution Coronal Imager (Hi-C) was launched for a third time (Hi-C 2.1) on 29th May 2018 from the White Sands Missile Range, NM, USA. On this occasion, 329 seconds of 17.2 nm data of target active region AR 12712 was captured with a cadence of ~4s, and a plate scale of 0.129''/pixel. Using data captured by Hi-C 2.1 and co-aligned observations from SDO/AIA 17.1 nm we investigate the widths of 49 coronal strands. We search for evidence of substructure within the strands that is not detected by AIA, and further consider whether these strands are fully resolved by Hi-C 2.1. With the aid of Multi-Scale Gaussian Normalization (MGN), strands from a region of low-emission that can only be visualized against the contrast of the darker, underlying moss are studied. A comparison is made between these low-emission strands with those from regions of higher emission within the target active region. It is found that Hi-C 2.1 can resolve individual strands as small as ~202km, though more typical strands widths seen are ~513km. For coronal strands within the region of low-emission, the most likely width is significantly narrower than the high-emission strands at ~388km. This places the low-emission coronal strands beneath the resolving capabilities of SDO/AIA, highlighting the need of a permanent solar observatory with the resolving power of Hi-C., Comment: 19 pages, 10 images, 3 tables

We examine 172 Ang ultra-high-resolution images of a solar plage region from the Hi-C 2.1 ("Hi-C") rocket flight of 2018 May 29. Over its five-minute flight, Hi-C resolves a plethora of small-scale dynamic features that appear near noise level in concurrent Solar Dynamics Observatory (SDO) Atmospheric Imaging Assembly (AIA) 171 Ang images. For ten selected events, comparisons with AIA images at other wavelengths and with the Interface Region Imaging Spectrograph (IRIS) images indicate that these features are cool (compared to the corona) ejections. Combining Hi-C 172 Ang, AIA 171 Ang, IRIS 1400 Ang, and H$\alpha$, we see that these ten cool ejections are similar to the H$\alpha$ "dynamic fibrils" and Ca ii "anemone jets" found in earlier studies. The front of some of our cool ejections are likely heated, showing emission in IRIS 1400 Ang. On average, these cool ejections have approximate widths: $3''.2 \pm 2''.1$, (projected) maximum heights and velocities: $4''.3 \pm 2''.5$ and $23 \pm 6$ km/s, and lifetimes: $6.5 \pm 2.4$ min. We consider whether these Hi-C features might result from eruptions of sub-minifilaments (smaller than the minifilaments that erupt to produce coronal jets). Comparisons with SDO's Helioseismic and Magnetic Imager (HMI) magnetograms do not show magnetic mixed-polarity neutral lines at these events' bases, as would be expected for true scaled-down versions of solar filaments/minifilaments. But the features' bases are all close to single-polarity strong-flux-edge locations, suggesting possible local opposite-polarity flux unresolved by HMI. Or, it may be that our Hi-C ejections instead operate via the shock-wave mechanism that is suggested to drive dynamic fibrils and the so-called type I spicules.

We present high-resolution, high-cadence observations of six, fine-scale, on-disk jet-like events observed by the High-resolution Coronal Imager 2.1 (Hi-C 2.1) during its sounding-rocket flight. We combine the Hi-C 2.1 images with images from SDO/AIA, and IRIS, and investigate each event's magnetic setting with co-aligned line-of-sight magnetograms from SDO/HMI. We find that: (i) all six events are jetlet-like (having apparent properties of jetlets), (ii) all six are rooted at edges of magnetic network lanes, (iii) four of the jetlet-like events stem from sites of flux cancelation between majority-polarity network flux and merging minority-polarity flux, and (iv) four of the jetlet-like events show brightenings at their bases reminiscent of the base brightenings in coronal jets. The average spire length of the six jetlet-like events (9,000$\pm$3000km) is three times shorter than that for IRIS jetlets (27,000$\pm$8000km). While not ruling out other generation mechanisms, the observations suggest that at least four of these events may be miniature versions of both larger-scale coronal jets that are driven by minifilament eruptions and still-larger-scale solar eruptions that are driven by filament eruptions. Therefore, we propose that our Hi-C events are driven by the eruption of a tiny sheared-field flux rope, and that the flux-rope field is built and triggered to erupt by flux cancelation., Comment: 10 pages, 5 figures, 1 Table, accepted for publication in ApJ Letters

The second Hi-C flight (Hi-C2.1) provided unprecedentedly-high spatial and temporal resolution ($\sim$250km, 4.4s) coronal EUV images of Fe IX/X emission at 172 \AA, of AR 12712 on 29-May-2018, during 18:56:21-19:01:56 UT. Three morphologically-different types (I: dot-like, II: loop-like, III: surge/jet-like) of fine-scale sudden-brightening events (tiny microflares) are seen within and at the ends of an arch filament system in the core of the AR. Although type Is (not reported before) resemble IRIS-bombs (in size, and brightness wrt surroundings), our dot-like events are apparently much hotter, and shorter in span (70s). We complement the 5-minute-duration Hi-C2.1 data with SDO/HMI magnetograms, SDO/AIA EUV images, and IRIS UV spectra and slit-jaw images to examine, at the sites of these events, brightenings and flows in the transition-region and corona and evolution of magnetic flux in the photosphere. Most, if not all, of the events are seated at sites of opposite-polarity magnetic flux convergence (sometimes driven by adjacent flux emergence), implying likely flux cancellation at the microflare's polarity inversion line. In the IRIS spectra and images, we find confirming evidence of field-aligned outflow from brightenings at the ends of loops of the arch filament system. In types I and II the explosion is confined, while in type III the explosion is ejective and drives jet-like outflow. The light-curves from Hi-C, AIA and IRIS peak nearly simultaneously for many of these events and none of the events display a systematic cooling sequence as seen in typical coronal flares, suggesting that these tiny brightening-events have chromospheric/transition-region origin., Comment: 35 pages, 25 figures, 1 table, accepted for publication in ApJ

The third flight of the High-Resolution Coronal Imager (Hi-C 2.1) occurred on May 29, 2018, the Sounding Rocket was launched from White Sands Missile Range in New Mexico. The instrument has been modified from its original configuration (Hi-C 1) to observe the solar corona in a passband that peaks near 172 Angstrom and uses a new, custom-built low-noise camera. The instrument targeted Active Region 12712, and captured 78 images at a cadence of 4.4 sec (18:56:22 - 19:01:57 UT; 5 min and 35 sec observing time). The image spatial resolution varies due to quasi-periodic motion blur from the rocket; sharp images contain resolved features of at least 0.47 arcsec. There are coordinated observations from multiple ground- and space-based telescopes providing an unprecedented opportunity to observe the mass and energy coupling between the chromosphere and the corona. The authors of this report met on 28-30 March 2018 at the New Jersey Institute of Technology, Newark, New Jersey, for a 3-day workshop that brought together a group of data providers, expert modelers, and computer and data scientists, in the solar discipline. Their objective was to identify challenges in the path towards building an effective framework to achieve transformative advances in the understanding and forecasting of the Sun-Earth system from the upper convection zone of the Sun to the Earth's magnetosphere. The workshop aimed to develop a research roadmap that targets the scientific challenge of coupling observations and modeling with emerging data-science research to extract knowledge from the large volumes of data (observed and simulated) while stimulating computer science with new research applications. The desire among the attendees was to promote future trans-disciplinary collaborations and identify areas of convergence across disciplines. The workshop combined a set of plenary sessions featuring invited introductory talks and workshop progress reports, interleaved with a set of breakout sessions focused on specific topics of interest. Each breakout group generated short documents, listing the challenges identified during their discussions in addition to possible ways of attacking them collectively. We explore new opportunities for solar physics that could be realized by future missions providing sustained observations from vantage points away from the Sun-Earth line. These include observations from the far side of the Sun, at high latitudes including over the solar poles, or from near-quadrature angles relative to the Earth (e.g., the Sun-Earth L4 and L5 Lagrangian points). Such observations fill known holes in our scientific understanding of the three-dimensional, time-evolving Sun and heliosphere, and have the potential to open new frontiers through discoveries enabled by novel viewpoints.

Magnetic fields in the sun's outer atmosphere -- the corona -- control both solar-wind acceleration and the dynamics of solar eruptions. We present the first clear observational evidence of coronal magnetic nulls in off-limb linearly polarized observations of pseudostreamers, taken by the Coronal Multichannel Polarimeter (CoMP) telescope. These nulls represent regions where magnetic reconnection is likely to act as a catalyst for solar activity. CoMP linear-polarization observations also provide an independent, coronal proxy for magnetic expansion into the solar wind, a quantity often used to parameterize and predict the solar wind speed at Earth. We introduce a new method for explicitly calculating expansion factors from CoMP coronal linear-polarization observations, which does not require photospheric extrapolations. We conclude that linearly-polarized light is a powerful new diagnostic of critical coronal magnetic topologies and the expanding magnetic flux tubes that channel the solar wind.

Solar filaments are magnetic structures often observed in the solar atmosphere and consist of plasma that is cooler and denser than their surroundings. They are visible for days -- and even weeks -- which suggests that they are often in equilibrium with their environment before disappearing or erupting. Several eruption models have been proposed that aim to reveal what mechanism causes (or triggers) these solar eruptions. Validating these models through observations represents a fundamental step in our understanding of solar eruptions. We present an analysis of the observation of a filament eruption that agrees with the torus instability model. This model predicts that a magnetic flux rope embedded in an ambient field undergoes an eruption when the axis of the flux rope reaches a critical height that depends on the topology of the ambient field. We use the two vantage points of SDO and STEREO to reconstruct the three-dimensional shape of the filament, to follow its morphological evolution and to determine its height just before eruption. The magnetograms acquired by SDO/HMI are used to infer the topology of the ambient field and to derive the critical height for the onset of the torus instability. Our analysis shows that the torus instability is the trigger of the eruption. We also find that some pre-eruptive processes, such as magnetic reconnection during the observed flares and flux cancellation at the neutral line, facilitated the eruption by bringing the filament to a region where the magnetic field was more vulnerable to the torus instability., Comment: 11 pages, 9 figures, to appear in The Astrophysical Journal

We report on the first observation of a single hybrid magnetic structure that contains both a pseudostreamer and a double helmet streamer. This structure was originally observed by the SWAP instrument aboard the PROBA2 satellite between 5 and 10~May~2013. It consists of a pair of filament channels near the south pole of the sun. On the western edge of the structure, the magnetic morphology above the filaments is that of a side-by-side double helmet streamer, with open field between the two channels. On the eastern edge, the magnetic morphology is that of a coronal pseudostreamer without the central open field. We investigated this structure with multiple observations and modelling techniques. Who cares? Magnetograms in the upper chromosphere are needed for accurate magnetic coronal extrapolations. The CLASP2 sounding rocket took spatially resolved spectropolarimetric data of Mg II h & k in the upper chromosphere, that can be used as a pathfinder to routine magnetograms. This work: Preliminary results of the center-to-limb variation (CLV) of the linear polarization in the quiet sun. We compare the signals to recent theoretical calculations of the expected polarization which include PRD, J-state interference, and magneto-optical effects.

Chromospheric LAyer Spectro-Polarimeter (CLASP2) is our next sounding rocket experiment after the success of Chromospheric Lyman-Alpha Spectro-Polarimeter (CLASP1). CLASP2 is scheduled to launch in 2019, and aims to achieve high precision measurements of the linear and circular polarizations in the Mg II h & k lines near the 280 nm, whose line cores originate in the upper solar chromosphere. The CLASP2 spectro-polarimeter follows very successful design concept of the CLASP1 instrument with the minimal modification. A new grating was fabricated with the same radius of curvature as the CLASP1 grating, but with a different ruling density. This allows us to essentially reuse the CLASP1 mechanical structures and layout of the optics. However, because the observing wavelength of CLASP2 is twice longer than that of CLASP1, a magnifier optical system was newly added in front of the cameras to double the focal length of CLASP2 in order to maintain the same wavelength resolution as CLASP1 (0.01 nm). Meanwhile, a careful optical alignment of the specto-polarimeter is required to reach the 0.01 nm wavelength resolution. Therefore, we established an efficient alignment procedure for the CLASP2 spectro-polarimeter based on an experience of CLASP1. Here, we explain in detail the methods for achieving the optical alignment of the CLASP2 spectro-polarimeter and discuss our results by comparing with the performance requirements.

"Chromospheric LAyer Spectro-Polarimeter (CLASP2)" is the next sounding rocket experiment of the "Chromospheric Lyman-Alpha Spectro-Polarimeter (CLASP)" that succeeded in observing for the first time the linear polarization spectra in the hydrogen Lyman- line (121.6 nm) and is scheduled to be launched in 2019. In CLASP2, we will carry out full Stokes-vector spectropolarimetric observations in the Mg II h & k lines near 280 nm with the spectro-polarimeter (SP), while imaging observations in the Lyman- line will be conducted with the slitjaw optics (SJ). For the wavelength selection of CLASP2, the primary mirror of the telescope uses a new dual-band pass cold mirror coating targeting both at 121.6 nm and 280 nm. Therefore, we have to perform again the alignment of the telescope after the installation of the recoated primary mirror. Before unmounting the primary mirror from the telescope structure, we measured the wave-front error (WFE) of the telescope. The measured WFE map was consistent with what we had before the CLASP flight, clearly indicating that the telescope alignment has been maintained even after the flight. After the re-coated primary mirror was installed the WFE was measured, and coma aberration was found to be larger. Finally, the secondary mirror shim adjustments were carried out based on the WFE measurements. In CLASP2 telescope, we improved a fitting method of WFE map (applying 8th terms circular Zernike polynomial tting instead of 37th terms circular Zernike fitting) and the improved method enables to achieve better performance than CLASP telescope. Indeed, WFE map obtained after the final shim adjustment indicated that the required specification (< 5:5 m RMS spot radius) that is more stringent than CLASP telescope was met.
