The present study aimed to investigate the utility of the proximal femur in the forensic age estimation by assessing changes in bone densities through radiographs. Using Otsu's threshold, bone density was quantified by counting all white pixel values within selected regions of interest, which include femoral head (FH), femoral neck (FN), Ward's triangle (WT), and greater trochanter (GT) from 354 left femora of Northern Thai descent. The pixel width of medullary cavity (MC) was also estimated. Furthermore, the study evaluated the performance of linear regression (LR) models for age estimation from radiographic images of proximal femora. Negative correlations were observed between FH, FN, WT, and GT pixel intensity with the age-at-death of the samples, with females exhibiting stronger correlations than males. Moreover, a positive correlation was found between age and MC width in female samples, while male MC widths did not show any relationship with increasing age. The results showed a slight difference between the LR model applied to both sexes, which integrated all variables, and the alternative configuration that only utilized relevant attributes. Both models exhibited similar performance, with a narrow range of root mean square error (RMSE) values, ranging from 12.67 to 12.71 years, and a correlation coefficient range of 0.51 to 0.52. For females, the LR model with FN and WT as selected attributes (RMSE = 11.85 years, correlation coefficient = 0.65) performed decently, while for males, the LR model with all variables showed RMSE of 12.52 years and correlation coefficient of 0.46. This study showcased the potential application of pixel intensity in predicting age. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Introduction: Peripheral trauma is a very frequent cause of consultation in paediatric emergency departments but few studies have been published describing the characteristics of these patients. Material and methods: We performed a retrospective descriptive study by reviewing computerised emergency department forms during January and February 2020. Objective: To describe the characteristics of traumatic injuries in our area and to detect possible areas for improvement. Results: A total of 714 peripheral trauma cases were attended, which represents 9.5% of the total consultations. A total of 52.7% were schoolchildren (6–11 years). The most frequent locations were the ankle (27.5%) and fingers (17.2%). Fracture was detected in 6.7% of cases. Radiographs were requested in 78.6% of the patients, with pathological findings in 9.6% of them. Half of the X-rays were requested due to ankle or finger trauma. Referral to traumatology was made in 16.4% of patients, mainly for elbow and knee trauma, and the most commonly used treatment was general measures (49%) and bandaging (29.4%). Conclusions: Peripheral trauma is very common and, in general, banal. A large number of X-rays are requested with a very low yield, so it seems necessary to establish new protocols to reduce the number of requests. Improving training in elbow and knee trauma could improve paediatricians’ autonomy in dealing with these more complex injuries.

- Abstract
Relevance. For more than 100 years, medical practice has used imaging methods to observe pathological changes localized in the human body. The first method was radiography, which became popular among doctors, but later it turned out that high radiation exposure increases the incidence of tumor diseases, which is why standards for permissible radiation doses were developed for patients and radiologists. The introduction of radiocontrast agents also had contraindications that should be taken into account. Ultrasound, computed tomography (CT), magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), and angiography methods have significantly increased the diagnostic capabilities of instrumental methods. The purpose of this review is to analyze the advantages and disadvantages of modern imaging methods in medicine. Methods. To achieve the purpose of the review, a literature search was conducted in Google Scholar and PubMed databases. Results. 1) The main indication for the X-ray method is visualization of bone structures. 2) X-ray contrast methods are optimal for studying hollow organs and blood vessels. 3) The advantage of MRI is the ability to visualize soft tissue well. 4) CT helps to reconstruct the spatial architecture of organs. 5) Ultrasound allows you to observe the condition of the embryo and fetus, as well as internal organs. - Abstract
Background: In Mexico and the world, breast cancer is the cancer type with the highest incidence and mortality for women. Its incidence has increased due to a higher life expectancy and a higher exposure to risk factors. Screening is done by mammography using the BIRADS (Breast Imaging Reporting and Data System) system, the standard for mammography screening report which classifies lesions assigning recommendations for patient follow-up. The system goes from 0 (not conclusive) to 6 (demonstrated malignancy), being of interest for this study the BIRADS 0 category. Objective: To describe patients classified as BIRADS 0 by mammography and their reclassification in a first-level hospital during 2021. Material and methods: Retrospective, descriptive, crosssectional, observational study. Women over 40 years with a BIRADS 0 result were studied. The following databases were used: Institutional Cancer Registry, Family Medicine Information System, Electronic Clinical File, and the mammography and patient list from preventive medicine. Results: Reclassification by ultrasound (US) was achieved in 100% of patients, in all of the BIRADS US categories. In 3.8% of BIRADS 0 patients, ductal adenocarcinoma was found and confirmed by histological testing. Conclusion: All of the reassessed lesions with US were adequately reclassified. - Abstract
The Psittacidae family is made up of several species. Among the native species in Brazil, the Caatinga parakeet (Eupsittula cactorum) is found abundantly in the Caatinga and Cerrado biomes. In the respiratory system, there are certain structural particularities, this system represents a significant target for infections or impairment related to creation, with radiology being an important tool in the evaluation of these anatomical structures and in the diagnosis of pathologies. Thus, the use of radiography in monitoring a case of pneumonia in a Caatinga parakeet was crucial in determining its progression. After the prescribed treatment, a second radiograph was taken, and, together with the clinical evaluation of the animal upon return, it was confirmed that the treatment was effective. - Abstract
The twister, an unconventional pet, requires careful sanitary management to avoid vulnerability to specific agents, especially those affecting the respiratory system. Untreated cases can evolve into severe situations that may become emergencies, and chest radiography is essential to determine the appropriate intervention. In this way, a twister was brought in for clinical care with dyspnea, was referred for hospitalization, and after stabilization underwent a chest radiograph that revealed pneumothorax and atelectasis. The animal underwent a relieving thoracentesis, showing a considerable clinical improvement. Unfortunately, it succumbed to its condition hours later. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Objective: To develop a convolutional neural network (CNN) model, trained with the Brazilian "Estudo Longitudinal de Saúde do Adulto Musculoesquelético" (ELSA-Brasil MSK, Longitudinal Study of Adult Health, Musculoskeletal) baseline radiographic examinations, for the automated classification of knee osteoarthritis. Materials and Methods: This was a cross-sectional study carried out with 5,660 baseline posteroanterior knee radiographs from the ELSA-Brasil MSK database (5,660 baseline posteroanterior knee radiographs). The examinations were interpreted by a radiologist with specific training, and the calibration was as established previously. Results: The CNN presented an area under the receiver operating characteristic curve of 0.866 (95% CI: 0.842-0.882). The model can be optimized to achieve, not simultaneously, maximum values of 0.907 for accuracy, 0.938 for sensitivity, and 0.994 for specificity. Conclusion: The proposed CNN can be used as a screening tool, reducing the total number of examinations evaluated by the radiologists of the study, and as a double-reading tool, contributing to the reduction of possible interpretation errors.

- Abstract
Osteoarthritis of the knee is a very common degenerative arthropathy, especially among the elderly, but also present in young adults, as a consequence of overweight and strenuous work or sports activity; this primary form is distinguished from the secondary form, resulting from other pathologies involving the articular surfaces of the knee such as fracture outcomes, osteonecrosis, infections, and femoral, tibial, and patellar malformations. Among the commonly used imaging techniques, the most effective in the evaluation of knee osteoarthritis are MRI and conventional radiology: both provide a wealth of information and highlight various pathological features affecting cartilage, joint spaces, and subchondral bone. A recent review compared the data obtained from preoperative X-ray and MRI examinations with the results of arthroscopic examinations, performed at Outside Facilities, over a period of about five years, to evaluate the reliability of these imaging techniques, in predicting the actual severity of observed knee osteoarthritis. Background and objective. In cases of rhinoplasty with septal deviation, the clinical diagnosis by the specialist is a core part of the conduct to be taken, whether clinical or surgical, because nasal obstruction, which is usually caused by this pathology, is one of the most frequent symptoms, this being the first indication of non-aesthetic nasal surgery Objective. To determine the concordance between clinical and radiographic diagnosis in patients undergoing septoplasty in a specialized clinic in Lima, Peru, during the period 2020 - 2021. Methods. Observational, quantitative, retrospective, analytical study of concordance. By non-probabilistic sampling by convenience, all patients with clinical diagnosis of septal deviation and radiographic studies who underwent septoplasty surgery in our clinic were considered. A total of 124 medical records were obtained that met the inclusion criteria. The percentage of concordance between these two metrics was calculated, and we estimated weighted and unweighted Cohen's kappa statistics across all samples and then by configuration. Results. With a mean age of 33 years, it was found that the majority were women (55.28%) without a predilection for the degree of significant deviation; the predominant clinical diagnosis was moderate degree (54.84%) and the radiological diagnosis was severe (49.19%). The main gnosology was congenital (38.8%), followed by acquired (34.7%), even so, there is no significant relationship between sex and the type of deviation found. An insignificant concordance was found between clinical and radiographic diagnosis in all its forms. Conclusions. In our study, there was no concordance between clinical and radiological diagnosis with respect to the degree or severity of septal deviation. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

ACROMEGALY , *METABOLIC disorders , *RADIOGRAPHY , *DISEASE progression , *JOINT pain , *MEDICAL digital radiography - Abstract
Acromegaly is an uncommon metabolic disorder, often diagnosed after a long delay. One symptom seen in many patients with acromegaly is arthralgia, a finding that calls for the use of conventional radiography, which can reveal subtle changes that can go unnoticed. The objective of this pictorial essay is to portray the radiographic aspects of acromegaly, seeking to demonstrate the importance of conventional radiography, which, despite its simplicity, can suggest the diagnosis, even in the early stages, thus altering the clinical course of the disease.

To identify differential features between patients with seropositive and seronegative rheumatoid arthritis (RA). Prospective cohort study, including patients who were admitted for polyarthralgia. At baseline was performed: laboratory studies, X -rays of hands and feet, ultrasound of both hands with power Doppler technique, clinical data and clinimetry. In subsequent visits the definitive diagnosis of RA was established or not. It was considered as seronegative RA when patients were negative for both RF and ACPAs. 746 patients were included, of which 128 (17.1%) ended with a final diagnosis of RA. Of these 128 patients, 87 (67.9%) were seropositive RA, while 41 (32%) were seronegative RA. The only feature that showed significant differences was the presence of tenosynovitis detected by ultrasound with a positive power Doppler signal, 13.7% of the patients with seropositive RA vs 41.6% of the patients with seronegative RA (p = 0.0028). The only differential feature of patients with seronegative RA was the higher proportion of tenosynovitis detected by ultrasound. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

COMPUTED tomography , *RADIOGRAPHY , *COMMUNITY-acquired pneumonia , *SENSITIVITY & specificity (Statistics) , *COMMUNICABLE diseases - Abstract
The approach to infectious diseases ranges from identification of the etiologic agent to treatment. In pneumonia, diagnostic tools are diverse; such as computed axial tomography, chest radiography and recently lung ultrasound (LUS), each with advantages and disadvantages. For this reason, we set out to systematically review the literature on the diagnostic accuracy of PU in the detection of community-acquired pneumonia (CAP) in adult patients, and to determine whether it is an optimal diagnostic tool. MEDLINE, CENTRAL and LILACS databases were searched. The quality of the included articles was determined using the "QUADAS-2" tool. The sensitivity and specificity of the UP were 82.8%-100% and 61.1%-98.7%. Chest X-ray sensitivity was 47%-72.7%, and specificity was 50%. Inter-observer agreement was determined with a range for the index κ = 0.79-0.88 for UP. In this study it was demonstrated that the UP used for the diagnosis of CAP has a better performance in terms of sensitivity and specificity; in addition, its low cost, availability, convenience and absence of ionization, ensures the usefulness of this diagnostic tool (PROSPERO ID 332552).

- Abstract

Introduction: Peripheral trauma is a very frequent cause of consultation in paediatric emergency departments but few studies have been published describing the characteristics of these patients., Material and Methods: We performed a retrospective descriptive study by reviewing computerised emergency department forms during January and February 2020., Objective: To describe the characteristics of traumatic injuries in our area and to detect possible areas for improvement., Results: A total of 714 peripheral trauma cases were attended, which represents 9.5% of the total consultations. A total of 52.7% were schoolchildren (6-11 years). Referral to traumatology was made in 16.4% of patients, mainly for elbow and knee trauma, and the most commonly used treatment was general measures (49%) and bandaging (29.4%)., Conclusions: Peripheral trauma is very common and, in general, banal. A large number of X-rays are requested with a very low yield, so it seems necessary to establish new protocols to reduce the number of requests. Improving training in elbow and knee trauma could improve paediatricians' autonomy in dealing with these more complex injuries., (Copyright © 2024 SECOT. Publicado por Elsevier España, S.L.U.
The most frequent locations were the ankle (27.5%) and fingers (17.2%). Fracture was detected in 6.7% of cases.
