Mammals are threatened worldwide, with 26% of all species being includedin the IUCN threatened categories. This overall pattern is primarily associatedwith habitat loss or degradation, and human persecution for terrestrial mam-mals, and pollution, open net fishing, climate change, and prey depletion formarine mammals. Mammals play a key role in maintaining ecosystems func-tionality and resilience, and therefore information on their distribution is cru-cial to delineate and support conservation actions. MAMMALS INPORTUGAL is a publicly available data set compiling unpublishedgeoreferenced occurrence records of 92 terrestrial, volant, and marine mam-mals in mainland Portugal and archipelagos of the Azores and Madeira thatincludes 105,026 data entries between 1873 and 2021 (72% of the data occur-ring in 2000 and 2021). The methods used to collect the data were: live obser-vations/captures (43%), sign surveys (35%), camera trapping (16%),bioacoustics surveys (4%) and radiotracking, and inquiries that represent lessthan 1% of the records. The data set includes 13 types of records: (1) burrowsjsoil moundsjtunnel, (2) capture, (3) colony, (4) dead animaljhairjskullsjjaws, (5) genetic confirmation, (6) inquiries, (7) observation of live animal (8),observation in shelters, (9) photo trappingjvideo, (10) predators dietjpelletsjpine cones/nuts, (11) scatjtrackjditch, (12) telemetry and (13) vocalizationjecholocation. The spatial uncertainty of most records ranges between 0 and100 m (76%). Rodentia (n=31,573) has the highest number of records followedby Chiroptera (n=18,857), Carnivora (n=18,594), Lagomorpha (n=17,496),Cetartiodactyla (n=11,568) and Eulipotyphla (n=7008). The data setincludes records of species classified by the IUCN as threatened(e.g.,Oryctolagus cuniculus[n=12,159],Monachus monachus[n=1,512],andLynx pardinus[n=197]). We believe that this data set may stimulate thepublication of other European countries data sets that would certainly contrib-ute to ecology and conservation-related research, and therefore assisting onthe development of more accurate and tailored conservation managementstrategies for each species. One of the fundamental interests in ecology is understanding which factors drive species’ distribution. We aimed to understand the drivers of bat distribution and co-occurrence patterns in a remote, insular system. The two bat species known to occur in the Azores archipelago were used as a model. Echolocation calls were recorded at 414 point-locations haphazardly distributed across the archipelago. Calls were analysed and assigned to each species. Binominal generalised linear models were adjusted using different descriptors at two scales: archipelago and island. The presence of the co-occurring species was included at both scales. The results show that island isolation, habitat and climate play an essential role on the archipelago and island scales, respectively. However, the positive interaction between bat species was the most critical driver of species’ distribution at the island scale. This high co-occurrence pattern at the island scale may result from both species’ maximising foraging profit in a region where prey abundance may be highly variable. However, further research is necessary to clarify the mechanisms behind this positive interaction. Both species are threatened and lack specific management and protection measures. Maintaining this positive interaction between the two species may prove to be fundamental for their conservation.

São abordados aspectos da sua elaboração, nomeadamente a conjugação dos diferentes meios artísticos utilizados: música, dança, imagem e texto. Este trabalho também coloca questões ligadas às características da qualidade expressiva e o imaginário cinematográfico na obra. The present work focuses on the creation and analytical approach to the creative process of a multimedia work. Aspects of its elaboration are addressed, namely the combination of the different artistic means used: music, dance, image and text. Fishers from the Amazon region gathered to exchange ideas about common challenges and opportunities to sustain and develop indigenous fisheries in the light of the SSF Guidelines

The Guaranis, indigenous people of Morro dos Cavalos in Brazil, are being displaced from their lands to satisfy the interests of politicians and businesses.

The Bijagós archipelago consists of about 80 land-bridge islands located just off the coast of Guinea-Bissau (West Africa). The current faunas of such land-bridge archipelagoes reflect the isolation resulting from the fragmentation of the original coastal plains, caused by sea level rise about 11000 years ago. Therefore, they represent a unique opportunity to study long-term consequences of natural habitat fragmentation, analogous to the ongoing fragmentation processes caused by Man.We sampled and analyzed the bat assemblages of eight Bijagós islands, with up to 261 km2, and two nearby coastal regions to understand how insularity shaped island assemblages, and evaluate the potential impacts of fragmentation on African bat assemblages.Rarefaction using Chao2 estimator indicated that total species richness on Bijagós is only about 1/5 of that on the coast. Cluster and correspondence analyses demonstrated that bat faunas of different islands are quite similar, and not a random set of the mainland species assemblage. Moreover, trait analysis indicated that islands assemblages are composed by generalist and abundant species; presumably only generalist species can attain island population sizes viable in the long-term.The observed species depletion resulting from long-term isolation in Bijagós is much more accentuated than that observed in recent fragments, corroborating the view that such fragments are still losing species. Our results indicate that, despite the high mobility of bats, even relatively large fragments are unable to sustain viable populations of most species and that the impacts are worse in the case or rarer species. Most ongoing fragmentation resulting from habitat destruction involves matrices with a lower contrast than water, and this may lessen impacts. However, at least in the case of high contrast matrices, currently fragmented landscapes are likely to continue loosing species, and thus the true, long-term, impacts of fragmentation shall likely be worse than those so far reported.

The abject working conditions of the shellfish fisherwomen on the Paraná coast of Brazil call for a revaluation of their work to guarantee them rights and benefits.

Os conhecimentos da natureza da Ilha de Superagui são adquiridos em todas as etapas da vida dos moradores. As crianças são iniciadas a tais saberes por parentes próximos e pelos membros mais velhos da comunidade. Enquanto os adultos continuam a ampliar seus conhecimentos, a partir da observação diária do oceano e através das reflexões e debates constantes entre os moradores. O empirismo, a utilização dos sentidos, as reflexões constantes, geraram complexos conhecimentos na comunidade, capaz de englobar ambientes tão diferentes, como o céu, o mar e a terra. Entretanto, toda essa complexidade dos conhecimentos dos moradores é ignorada pela gestão do Parque Nacional de Superagui, que inviabilizou a participação da comunidade na construção do plano de manejo. Os moradores desejam participar do plano de manejo, para que possam decidir sobre o futuro de seu território e de suas próprias vidas, mas a gestão do Parque optou por terceirizar o plano de manejo, excluindo a comunidade da construção do mesmo. Enquanto isso, a comunidade contesta o conhecimento científico dos gestores e dos técnicos da empresa terceirizada, mostrando algumas imprecisões de tais conhecimentos, principalmente quando referente à Ilha de Superagui. A partir disso, este trabalhou buscou questionar quem possui o direito de gerir a Ilha de Superagui e por quê? A questão vai além de quem detêm mais conhecimento, pois, mais do que uma mera disputa pelo saber, é uma relação de poder, em que aqueles com mais poder são os manejadores da natureza. Abstract: This study aimed to enter the world of traditional fishing community of Barra Ararapira, inserted into the Superagui National Park (Guaraqueçaba - PR), to describe the local and traditional knowledge, trying to understand the complexity, dynamics and learning processes of this knowledge. The knowledge about the nature of Superagui Island is purchased at all stages of life of the residents. Children are initiated in such knowledge by your father, mother and the older members of the community. The adults continue to expand their knowledge, from the observation of the ocean and through the reflections and constant debates among residents. Empiricism, the use of the senses, the constant reflections, generated complex knowledge in the community, able to embrace so many different environments, such as the sky, the sea and the land. However, all this complexity of knowledge is ignored by the management of the National Park Superagui, who denied the participation of the community in the construction of the management plan. Residents wish to participate in the management plan, to decide on the future of their territory and their own lives, but the management of the Park opted to outsource the management plan, excluding the community. Meanwhile, community contest the scientific knowledge of managers and technicians, showing some inaccuracies of such knowledge, especially when referring to Superagui Island. From this, this work inquire who has the right to manage Superagui Island and why? The issue goes beyond who have more knowledge, because, more than just a race for knowledge, is a power relationship, in that those with more power are the managers of nature.
