1. Fluvial Transport Model from Spatial Distribution Analysis of Libyan Desert Glass Mass on the Great Sand Sea (Southwest Egypt): Clues to Primary Glass Distribution

Abstract: Libyan Desert Glass (LDG) is a natural silica-rich melted rock found as pieces scattered over the sand and bedrock of the Western Desert of Egypt, northeast of the Gilf Kebir. In this work, a population mixture analysis serves to relate the present spatial distribution of LDG mass density with the Late Oligocene–Early Miocene fluvial dynamics in the Western Desert of Egypt. This was verified from a spatial distribution model that was predicted from the log-normal kriging method using the LDG–mass-dependent transformed variable, Y(x). Both low- and high-density normal populations (–9.2 < Y(x) < –3.5 and –3.8 < Y(x) < 2.1, respectively) were identified. The low-density population was the result of an ordinary fluvial LDG transport/deposition sequence that was active from the time of the melting process, and which lasted until the end of activity of the Gilf River. The surface distribution of the high-density population allowed us to restrict the source area of the melting process. We demonstrate the importance of this geostatistical study in unveiling the probable location of the point where the melting of surficial material occurred and the role of the Gilf River in the configuration of the observed strewn field.

Abstract: Considering the continued drive of human needs besides the constant improvement of technology, it is convenient to develop techniques that enhance the communication between computers and humans in the most intuitive ways as possible. The possibility to automatically recognize human gestures using artificial vision among other kind sensorsallows to explore a whole range of interaction applications to control and interact with environments. Nowadays, most of approaches for gesture recognition using sensors agree in the use of vision, myography and movement devices applied to robotic, medical and industrial applications. In the context of this work, we study the principles of using both vision andbody contact sensing applied to automatic classification of a human gesture set. For this, two different approaches are evaluated: Feed-forward Neural Networks and Hidden Markov Models. These models are studied and implemented for the recognition up to eight different human hand gestures commonly applied in collaborative robotics tasks. In our tests,we conclude the effectiveness of combining the information of two different sort of devices for human gesture recognition reaching accuracy rates up to 95.05% for a whole proposed Hand-gesture set.

Abstract: Nowadays the implementation of artificial neural networks in high-energy physics has obtained excellent results on improving signal detection. In this work we propose to use neural networks (NNs) for event discrimination in HAWC. This observatory is a water Cherenkov gamma-ray detector that in recent years has implemented algorithms to identify horizontal muon tracks. However, these algorithms are not very efficient. In this work we describe the implementation of three NNs: two based on image classification and one based on object detection. Using these algorithms we obtain an increase in the number of identified tracks. 4. Segmentation and Classification of Bone Marrow Cells Images Using Contextual Information for Medical Diagnosis of Acute Leukemias.

Abstract: Morphological identification of acute leukemia is a powerful tool used by hematologists to determine the family of such a disease. In some cases, experienced physicians are even able to determine the leukemia subtype of the sample. However, the identification process may have error rates up to 40% (when classifying acute leukemia subtypes) depending on the physician's experience and the sample quality. This problem raises the need to create automatic tools that provide hematologists with a second opinion during the classification process. Our research presents a contextual analysis methodology for the detection of acute leukemia subtypes from bone marrow cells images. We propose a cells separation algorithm to break up overlapped regions. In this phase, we achieved an average accuracy of 95% in the evaluation of the segmentation process. In a second phase, we extract descriptive features to the nucleus and cytoplasm obtained in the segmentation phase in order to classify leukemia families and subtypes. We finally created a decision algorithm that provides an automatic diagnosis for a patient. In our experiments, we achieved an overall accuracy of 92% in the supervised classification of acute leukemia families, 84% for the lymphoblastic subtypes, and 92% for the myeloblastic subtypes. Finally, we achieved accuracies of 95% in the diagnosis of leukemia families and 90% in the diagnosis of leukemia subtypes.

Abstract: Gamma-ray bursts (GRBs) are among the most luminous sources in the universe. The nature of their emission at TeV energies is one of the most relevant open issues related to these events. The temporal and spectral features inferred from the early and late emissions usually known as prompt and afterglow, respectively, can be interpreted within the context of the fireball model. The synchrotron self-Compton process is expected during the afterglow phase. We explain how the theoretical SSC light curves can be compared with hypothetical upper limit located at z=0.3. We show the allowed parameter space of the microphysical parameters and density of the circumburst medium. Abstract: Studies of radio galaxies at TeV energies are fascinating because their jets are misaligned concerning our sightline. Thus, it provides us with a unique opportunity to study the structure of their jets, the radiative processes, and the acceleration mechanisms involved in them. In addition, some radio galaxies have presented variability in their emission, like the giant radio galaxy M87, which has reported several activity periods. Due to its duty cycle >95% and instantaneous field of view of 2 sr, HAWC provides daily monitoring of variable sources visible from the Northern Hemisphere. In this work, we show the results of monitoring M87 between January 2015 and December 2018. HAWC's observations are consistent with the low activity state reported by other instruments (like H.E.S.S and MAGIC). Abstract: M87 is a giant radio galaxy located in the Virgo Cluster, known to be a very high energy (VHE) gamma-ray source. As radio galaxies are considered the misaligned low-redshift counterparts of blazars, they are excellent laboratories for testing AGN emission models. M87 has been detected and monitored by Fermi-LAT and several atmospheric Cherenkov telescopes. Recently, the HAWC Collaboration presented marginal evidence of 4.5 year TeV gamma-ray emission from this object. The HAWC data has the potential to constrain the average VHE emission of sources of complex behavior, like M87, for which the physical origin of the VHE gamma-ray emission is still uncertain. We fitted a lepto-hadronic scenario to the broadband spectral energy distribution of M87 to model its non-flaring VHE emission using HAWC data.

Abstract: eHWC J1825-134 is one of the brightest Galactic 𝛾-ray sources above 50 TeV observed by High Altitude Water Cherenkov 𝛾-Ray Observatory (HAWC). Detailed morphological studies have revealed a new point-like source inside this region with a spectral energy distribution extending beyond 200 TeV without any cutoff. These very-high-energy 𝛾 rays emission can originate from leptonic or hadronic processes. The new point-like source is located in a region containing PWNe and a high-density giant molecular cloud [MML2017]99. If the source emission is associated with the hadronic scenario the TeV 𝛾 rays may have been produced by cosmic rays colliding with ambient gas. If this were the case, eHWC J1825-134 is an indicator of the existence of a galactic PeVatron in the region that accelerates particles up to PeV energies.

Abstract: We present the observation of an anomalous increment of the galactic cosmic ray (GCR) flux observed by the HAWC array during October 2016. We propose that this anisotropy of the GCR flux was caused by a magnetic flux rope (MFR) i. e., by the helicoidal magnetic field of an interplanetary coronal mass ejection observed at 1 AU at the same time. We computed the trajectory of protons with energy in the range of 10 to 60 GeV, traveling inside the helicoidal magnetic field observed in situ. The direction of these particles changes towards the axis of the MFR resulting in an anisotropy of the GCR flux along this axis. This model shows that the alignment between the MFR axis and the HAWC s asymptotic direction, combined with the high sensitivity of HAWC, allowed us to observe the effect of the passage of the MFR on the GCR flux. We present the HAWC observation associated with the passage of the MFR as well as the helio- spheric circumstances around such phenomenon.

Abstract: The Cygnus Cocoon region is a complex region containing an OB star cluster that is prominent in the TeV energy range. Located in this region is 3HWC J2031+415, a significant TeV gamma-ray source whose emission is possibly associated with 2 components, the Cygnus OB2 star cluster and a pulsar wind nebula (PWN). In this work, several modelling methods are presented to best describe the emission. These models disentangle emission believed to be from the Cocoon and isolate the component emitted by the probable PWN. I will present several spectral models to describe the emission of the probable PWN using the latest data set from the High-Altitude Water Cherenkov (HAWC) observatory. Furthermore, I will present an energy morphology study of the PWN component of 3HWC J2031+415 in distinct energy bands.

Abstract: The High Altitude Water Cherenkov (HAWC) Observatory is a wide-field-of-view gamma-ray observatory that is optimized to detect gamma rays between ~300 GeV and several hundred TeV. The HAWC Collaboration recently released their third source catalog (3HWC), which contains 65 sources. One of these sources, the ultra-high-energy gamma-ray source 3HWC J1908+063, may exhibit a hardening of the spectral index at the highest energies (above 56 TeV). At least two populations of particles are needed to satisfactorily explain the highest energy emission. This second component could be leptonic or hadronic in origin. If it is hadronic in origin, it would imply the presence of protons with energies up to $\sim$1 PeV near the source. We have searched other 3HWC sources for the presence of this spectral hardening feature. If observed, this would imply that the sources could make good PeVatron candidates.

Abstract: The TeV gamma-ray source MGRO J1908+06 is one of the highest-energy sources known, with observed emission by the High Altitude Water Cherenkov (HAWC) Observatory extending well past 100 TeV. The source exhibits both energy-dependent morphology and a spatially-dependent spectral index. The emission is likely to be dominantly leptonic, and associated with the radio-quiet PSR J1907+0602. However, one-population models do not describe the data well; a second particle population is needed to explain the shape of the spectral energy distribution at the highest energies. This component can be well-described by either leptonic or hadronic hypotheses. We discuss this feature and implications for detection by multi-wavelength and multi-messenger experiments.

Abstract: Background showers triggered by hadrons represent over 99.9% of all particles arriving at ground-based gamma-ray observatories. An important stage in the data analysis of these observatories, therefore, is the removal of hadron-triggered showers. Currently, the High-Altitude Water Cherenkov (HAWC) gamma-ray observatory employs an algorithm based on a single cut in two variables, unlike other ground-based gamma-ray observatories (e.g. H.E.S.S., VERITAS), which employ a large number of variables to separate the primary particles. In this work, we explore machine learning techniques (Boosted Decision Trees and Neural Networks) to identify the primary particles detected by HAWC. Abstract: A wide range of data formats and proprietary software have traditionally been used in gamma-ray astronomy, usually developed for a single specific mission or experiment. However, in recent years there has been an increasing effort towards making astronomical data open and easily accessible. Within the gamma-ray community this has translated to the creation of a common data format across different gamma-ray observatories: the "gamma-astro-data-format" (GADF). Based on a similar premise, open-source analysis packages, such as Gammapy, are being developed and aim to provide a single, robust tool which suits the needs of many experiments at once. In this contribution we show that data from the High-Altitude Water Cherenkov (HAWC) observatory can be made compatible with the GADF and present the first GADF-based production of event lists and instrument response functions for a ground-based wide-field instrument. We use these data products to reproduce with excellent agreement the published HAWC Crab spectrum using Gammapy. Having a common data format and analysis tools facilitates joint analysis between different experiments and effective data sharing. Abstract: 36th International Cosmic Ray Conference, ICRC2019, Madison, USA, 24 Jul 2019 - 1 Aug 2019; 9 pages (2019)., The search for Dark Matter (DM) has great potential to reveal physics beyond the Standard Model. As such, searches for evidence of DM particles are being carried out using a wide range of techniques, such as direct searches for DM particles, searches for DM produced with colliders, and indirect searches for the Standard Model annihilation products of DM. Dwarf spheroidal galaxies (dSphs) are excellent targets for indirect Dark Matter searches due to their relatively high DM content and negligible expected astrophysical background. A collaboration was formed to maximise the sensitivity of DM searches towards dSphs by combining for the first time dSph data from three imaging air Cherenkov telescope (IACT) arrays: HESS, MAGIC, and VERITAS; the Fermi-LAT satellite, and the water Cherenkov detector HAWC. Due to the diverse nature of the instruments involved, each experiment will analyse their individual datasets from multiple targets and then the results will be combined at the likelihood level. For consistency of the likelihoods across the five experiments, a common approach is used to treat the astrophysical factor (J-Factor) for each target and an agreed set of annihilation channels are considered. We also agree on a common statistical approach and treatment of instrumental systematic uncertainties. The results are presented in terms of constraints on the velocity-weighted cross section for DM self-annihilation as a function of the DM particle mass.

29. Evaluation of Deformable Convolution: An Investigation in Image and Video Classification

Abstract: Convolutional Neural Networks (CNNs) present drawbacks for modeling geometric transformations, caused by the convolution operation’s locality. Deformable convolution (DCON) is a mechanism that solves these drawbacks and improves the robustness. In this study, we clarify the optimal way to replace the standard convolution with its deformable counterpart in a CNN model. To this end, we conducted several experiments using DCONs applied in the layers that conform a small four-layer CNN model and on the four-layers of several ResNets with depths 18, 34, 50, and 101. The models were tested in binary balanced classes with 2D and 3D data. If DCON is used on the first layers of the proposal of model, the computational resources will tend to increase and produce bigger misclassification than the standard CNN. However, if the DCON is used at the end layers, the quantity of Flops will decrease, and the classification accuracy will improve by up to 20% about the base model. Moreover, it gains robustness because it can adapt to the object of interest. Also, the best kernel size of the DCON is three. With these results, we propose a guideline and contribute to understanding the impact of DCON on the robustness of CNNs.

Abstract: We propose a method for automatic stellar spectral classification using a large collection of astronomical plate images improving the number of true positives for several spectral type classes in comparison with other approaches using the WND-CHARM feature extractor in order to study the most relevant parameters for this problem, concluding that Chebyshev Coefficients applied to images are the best alternative to describe up to seven different Stellar Spectral Types according to the Harvard Spectral Classification system taking account the main classes [O, B, A, F, G, K, M] sorted from the hottest to the coldest stellar object by their chemical composition. We present precision and accuracy rates reached by multiple machine learning approaches, obtaining applicable results for five and seven of the most important stellar spectral classes.

Abstract: Morphological identification of acute leukemia is a powerful tool used by hematologists to determine the family of such a disease. In some cases, experienced physicians are even able to determine the leukemia subtype of the sample. However, the identification process may have error rates up to 40% (when classifying acute leukemia subtypes) depending on the physician’s experience and the sample quality. This problem raises the need to create automatic tools that provide hematologists with a second opinion during the classification process. Our research presents a contextual analysis methodology for the detection of acute leukemia subtypes from bone marrow cells images. We propose a cells separation algorithm to break up overlapped regions. In this phase, we achieved an average accuracy of 95% in the evaluation of the segmentation process. In a second phase, we extract descriptive features to the nucleus and cytoplasm obtained in the segmentation phase in order to classify leukemia families and subtypes. We finally created a decision algorithm that provides an automatic diagnosis for a patient. In our experiments, we achieved an overall accuracy of 92% in the supervised classification of acute leukemia families, 84% for the lymphoblastic subtypes, and 92% for the myeloblastic subtypes. Finally, we achieved accuracies of 95% in the diagnosis of leukemia families and 90% in the diagnosis of leukemia subtypes.

Abstract: Sodium dodecyl sulfate–polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis (SDS-PAGE) is used to identify protein presence, absence, or overexpression and usually, their interpretation is visual. Some published methods can localize the position of proteins using image analysis on images of SDS-PAGE gels. However, they cannot automatically determine a particular protein band’s concentration or molecular weight. In this article, a new methodology to identify the number of samples present in an SDS-PAGE gel and the molecular weight of the recombinant protein is developed. SDS-PAGE images of different concentrations of pure GPN protein were created to produce homogeneous gels. Then, these images were analyzed using the developed methodology called Image Profile Based on Binarized Image Segmentation (IPBBIS). It is based on detecting the maximum intensity values of the analyzed bands and produces the segmentation of images filtered by a binary mask. The IPBBIS was developed to identify the number of samples in an SDS-PAGE gel and the molecular weight of the recombinant protein of interest, with a margin of error of 3.35%. An accuracy of 0.9850521 was achieved for homogeneous gels and 0.91736 for heterogeneous gels of low quality.

36. Modelo Jerárquico para la clasificación de galaxias

Abstract: The National Institute for Astrophysics, Optics, and Electronics owns an astronomical plates collection that surveys about 50 years of research. These astronomical plates were captured with a Schmidt Camera, and although they were obtained long ago, not all the stellar objects found in there have been analyzed. A particular case of these stellar objects consist of galaxies, for which this research work focus in their morphological classification. In order to perform this classification, we require the use of images processing and classification (such as hierarchical classification) techniques. The state of the art makes reference to diverse alternatives to solve the galaxies classification problem. Some of the more relevant works use classification ensembles and consider that this domain suffers the class imbalance problem. In order to perform a better analysis of galaxies, some researchers use a technique that separates the galaxy nucleus from the rest of its body. However, in all cases, the main problem worseness as the number of types of galaxies to classify increases. This considerably decreases the classification accuracy. In this work, we propose a new method for the morphological galaxies classification based on a hierarchical technique. The proposed method starts with the processing of a plate in order to identify the stellar objects found in it. Once these objects have been identified, we perform an initial classification to separate between stars and galaxies. After separating stars from galaxies, we focus in our objects of interest; in this case, we refer to galaxies. Next, we take the galaxy image and separate its nucleus from the rest of the galaxy so that we can consider both (separately) in the analysis. We designed a hierarchy based on the Hubble’s classification in order to perform a hierarchical classification using a multi-dimensional hierarchical classification technique. In order to deal with the class imbalance problem we performed two tasks. In the first one, we create artificial examples (images) applying geometric transformations to the original images. In the second one, we use over sampling technique. The proposed method was tested with the database created for this thesis project. The results found show that the hierarchical classification method has a higher performance than the flat classification technique. El Instituto Nacional de Astrofísica, Óptica y Electrónica posee alrededor de 50 años de investigación astronómica contenidos en su colección de placas astronómicas tomadas en la Cámara Schmidt. A pesar de contar con esta gran colección no se han analizado todos los objetos estelares que se encuentran en ellas. Un caso particular de estos objetos estelares son las galaxias, por lo que en este trabajo de tesis se realizó la clasificación morfológica de las mismas. Se propone un nuevo método para la clasificación morfológica de galaxias basado en un enfoque jerárquico. El método propuesto inicia desde el procesamiento de la placa, para identificar los objetos estelares contenidos en la misma. Una vez identificados los objetos, se lleva a cabo una primera clasificación para discernir entre estrellas y galaxias. Después de separar estrellas de galaxias, entonces nos enfocamos en los objetos de interés, en este caso nos referimos a las galaxias. A continuación, se toma la imagen de la galaxia y se lleva a cabo la separación el núcleo del resto de la galaxia, para así poder hacer un análisis de ambos. Se diseño una taxonomía basada en la clasificación de Hubble para llevar a cabo una clasificación jerárquica utilizando una técnica de clasificación jerárquica multidimensional. Debido a que existe una mayor cantidad de galaxias espirales en comparación a las galaxias de otros tipos, fue necesario tratar el problema de desbalance de clases y para ello se realizaron dos tareas. La primera fue crear ejemplos artificiales (imágenes) aplicando transformaciones geométricas a las imágenes originales y la segunda fue el utilizar una técnica de sobre-muestreo. El método propuesto fue probado con una base de datos creada en este mismo proyecto de tesis. Los resultados mostraron que la clasificación jerárquica tiene un desempeño mayor que la clasificación plana, y además que al agregar datos mediante sobre-muestreo y ejemplos artificiales también se mejora el desempeño de clasificación.
