The objective of this study was to examine the effect of supplementing goat diets with avocado pulp and oil, with respective ether extract (EE) contents of 14 and 6% (dry matter [DM] basis), on the intakes of DM and nutrients and on the rumen fermentation parameters of pH, ammonia (N-NH3), and volatile fatty acids (VFA). Non-pregnant, non-lactating, rumen-cannulated Saanen goats with an average weight of 66.6±4.6 kg were distributed into two 3 × 3 Latin squares. Concentrate DM intake (g/day) was higher in the animals that consumed the diet with pulp than in the goats fed the control and oil treatments. However, this higher concentrate intake was not sufficient to influence total diet DM intake or the intakes of crude protein, EE, mineral matter, neutral detergent fiber, acid detergent fiber, and total digestible nutrients (TDN). All evaluated rumen parameters were influenced by collection time, except N-NH3, which was influenced by the diets, with lower concentrations obtained with the pulp diet in relation to the control and oil treatments, yet within the limits considered normal to maximize DM intake and digestion. The pulp diet provided a lower butyric acid content than control at the collection times of two and eight hours after the meal, which was attributed to the proportional reduction of roughage in relation to concentrate. Diets with 6% EE do not influence intake or rumen parameters in non-pregnant, non-lactating goats. However, diets with 14% EE (DM basis) induce a reduction in the proportional intake of roughage in relation to concentrate and in the butyric acid and N-NH3 contents in the goat rumen.

The aim of this study was to examine the effect of including avocado oil in goat diets, because it was the fastest strategy to change the milk fatty acid profile to benefit the health of consumers is increasing the conjugated linoleic acid (CLA), where evaluated intake and milk yield, composition and fatty acid profile. Six lactating Anglo-Nubian goats were evaluated in two 3 A— 3 balanced Latin squares. The diet containing avocado pulp reduced DM intake, whereas the oil-supplemented diet increased it, compared to control diet, and the same trend was observed for the other nutrients except Ether Extract, whose intake was higher in the goats fed avocado pulp diet compared to control diet. Milk total solids and fat contents were higher in the group fed the diet with avocado oil than in the control group, which in turn did not differ from the group fed avocado pulp. The other milk components and milk yield were not influenced by the diets. Short-chain fatty acid contents in the milk of the goats supplemented with a lipid source decreased in comparison to control group, whereas the CLA level rose by 56.88 and 66.10% in the milk of the goats fed the pulp- and oil-supplemented diets, respectively. Supplementing unsaturated fatty acids via avocado oil or avocado pulp elevates the CLA concentrations and reduces the short-chain fatty acid content in milk, improving its nutraceutical properties and ultimately benefitting the health of consumers.

Four rumen-cannulated Saanen goats were allocated to four treatments, which consisted of a control diet and diets with the inclusion of 30 g of canola, sunflower, or soybean oils per kilogram of diet dry matter (DM). The experiment lasted 40 days, which were divided into four 10-day periods. Forage intake was estimated using chromium oxide as an external marker, and supplement intake was determined as the difference between the daily amount supplied and orts. Rumen fermentation parameters were evaluated from samples of rumen fluid collected every 2 h, for 12 h. Rumen pH and short-chain fatty acid and ammonia nitrogen concentrations were measured. There was no effect of lipid supplementation on DM intake. Ether extract intake was highest in the treatments with oil inclusion, and the highest acid detergent fiber intake was obtained with the diet containing canola oil. The pH was highest in the group fed soybean oil and responded quadratically to the collection times. Total short-chain fatty acid and acetic acid concentrations also responded quadratically to the collection times. Propionic and butyric acid concentrations and acetic:propionic acid ratio showed a cubic behavior with the increasing collection times. Canola, sunflower, or soybean oils can be included at 30 g/kg of the diet DM as a strategy to increase the energy density of goat diets. The trial was conducted with the objective to evaluate fresh sugarcane as a replacement for corn silage on dry matter intake, ruminal parameters (pH, short chain fatty acids, and ammonia nitrogen concentration), and degradation kinetics of forages and concentrate in maintenance adult goats. Four nonlactating ruminally cannulated goats were used in a 4 × 4 Latin square design with the replacement of 0, 33, 67, and 100% of corn silage by sugarcane as the independent variable. The substitution of sugarcane for corn silage did not affect dry matter intake, daily weight gain, or ruminal pH. A quadratic effect was observed for ammonia nitrogen concentration with a maximum concentration at 74.43% of sugarcane inclusion, as well as for short chain fatty acids, with maximum concentrations of acetate and butyrate at 0.59 and 32.70% of sugarcane inclusion, respectively. The minimum concentration of propionate was verified on 10.36% of sugarcane inclusion. However, the acetate:propionate ratio linearly decreased with increased sugarcane content. No effect was observed of different rumen environments on forage dry matter and neutral detergent fiber degradability (effective and potential degradability, soluble and potential degradable fractions). Dry matter degradability was 66.79% for sugarcane and 72.62% for corn silage after 96 h of incubation. Neutral detergent fiber was 37.10 and 51.82% for sugarcane and corn silage, respectively, after 96 h of incubation. In conclusion, sugarcane can be used as a replacement for corn silage in maintenance adult goats feed without altering dry matter intake and forage degradability while increasing propionate production. RESUMO O experimento foi conduzido para avaliar a cana-de-açúcar in natura em substituição à silagem de milho no consumo de matéria seca, parâmetros ruminais e cinética de degradação de forragens e concentrado em cabras adultas em mantença. Quatro cabras não lactantes canuladas no rúmen foram utilizadas em um delineamento em quadrado latino 4 × 4 com a substituição de 0, 33, 67 e 100% da silagem de milho por cana-de-açúcar. A substituição da cana-de-açúcar pela silagem de milho não afetou o consumo de matéria seca, o ganho de peso diário e o pH ruminal. Foi observado efeito quadrático para a concentração de nitrogênio amoniacal com concentração máxima de 74,43% de inclusão da cana, e também para ácidos graxos de cadeia curta, com concentrações máximas de acetato e butirato de 0,59 e 32,70% de inclusão da cana, respectivamente. A concentração mínima de propionato foi verificada em 10,36% de inclusão de cana-de-açúcar. No entanto, a relação acetato: propionato diminuiu linearmente com o aumento do teor de cana-de-açúcar. Não foi observado efeito de diferentes ambientes ruminais sobre a degradabilidade da matéria seca da forragem e da fibra em detergente neutro. A degradabilidade da matéria seca foi de 66,79% para a cana-de-açúcar e 72,62% para a silagem de milho após 96 h de incubação. A fibra em detergente neutro foi 37,10 e 51,82% para cana-de-açúcar e silagem de milho, respectivamente, após 96 h de incubação. Em conclusão, a cana-de-açúcar pode ser usada como substituto da silagem de milho na alimentação de cabras adultas de manutenção, sem alterar o consumo de matéria seca e a degradabilidade da forragem, aumentando a produção de propionato.

Forty-eight Anglo Nubian kids were evaluated in a completely randomized experimental design with four treatments, namely, control diet and diets including 2.5% canola, sunflower, or soybean oils. The animals were slaughtered at 30 kg live weight and performance, carcass and meat quality, centesimal composition, and fatty acid profile were evaluated. The treatments did not influence carcass yield or meat color. Among the saturated fatty acids, only caprylic, palmitic, and heptadecanoic acids differed among the treatments, whereas total saturated fatty acids decreased in the sunflower oil treatment. Monounsaturated fatty acids were not influenced by lipid supplementation. Among the polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFA), linoleic acid was highest in the sunflower oil-treated group. Total PUFA were higher for the soybean oil-supplemented group, but similar to that achieved with sunflower oil. The highest omega-6 content was obtained with dietary inclusion of sunflower oil, whereas conjugated linoleic acid, atherogenicity index, and hypocholesterolemic:hypocholesterolemic ratio improved with the inclusion of sunflower and soybean oils. Supplementation with vegetable oils improves the fatty acid profile of kid meat without affecting animal performance. Better results are obtained with sunflower and soybean oils; therefore, it is up to the producer to choose the diet according to its cost. The objective of this work was to evaluate the effect of inclusion of dried distillery grains (DDGS) as a replacement for soybean meal in the diet of lambs in feedlot and to evaluate the performance, yield characteristics, and meat quality. Three diets with different DDGS levels were provided: diet with soybean meal (control); diet with 50% replacement of soybean meal by DDGS; diet with 100% replacement of soybean meal with DDGS. The average feed intake of the animals and the difference between the leftovers showed no difference among the treatments. No differences of average daily weight gain, body score and feed conversion index were observed among treatments. The same was observed for biometric measurements. However, warm carcass weight and chest perimeter were higher without the use of DDGS. The final weight, muscle, bone, intermuscular, subcutaneous and total fat weight did not differ among treatments. No difference was also found for tissues color. The kilogram of the concentrate mixture that uses soybean meal as the main source of protein (control) was approximately 12% more expensive than the mixture using DDGS (100%). The use of DDGS as an alternative source in confined lamb feeding may be recommended in up to 24% replacement in dietary dry matter. O Objetivo desse trabalho foi avaliar o efeito da inclusão de grão seco de destilaria com solúveis (DDGS) como substituto a farelo de soja na dieta de cordeiros em confinamento. E avaliar a influência dessa inclusão sobre as características de desempenho, rendimento e qualidade de carne. Foram usados 30 animais, sendo 15 machos e 15 fêmeas, distribuídos em três tratamentos. Foram elaboradas dietas com três níveis de inclusão de DDGS, sendo: Tratamento 1 - dieta com farelo de soja (controle, 0% de inclusão de DDGS); Tratamento 2 - dieta com 50% de substituição do farelo de soja por DDGS; e Tratamento 3 - dieta com 100% de substituição do farelo de soja por DDGS. Foi avaliado o consumo médio dos animais, suas medidas biométricas, além de parâmetros de qualidade de carne e custo das dietas. A avaliação do consumo e a diferença entre as sobras não mostraram diferença entre os tratamentos. Também não foram observadas diferenças entre os ganhos de peso médio diário, ganho de peso total, escore corporal, índice de conversão alimentar e eficiência alimentar entre os tratamentos. O mesmo foi observado para as medidas biométricas. Não houve diferenças para a circunferência externa e interna, conformação, musculatura e largura da garupa e do tórax. No entanto, o peso da carcaça quente e o perímetro torácico foram maiores no tratamento sem o uso de DDGS. O peso final, peso dos músculos, peso ósseo, peso de gordura intermuscular, peso de gordura subcutânea, peso total de gordura também não diferiram entre os tratamentos. Nenhuma diferença foi encontrada para cor do músculo ou da gordura intermuscular e subcutânea. O valor gasto no custo do quilograma da mistura de concentrado que utilizava farelo de soja como principal fonte de proteína (controle) foi aproximadamente 12% mais caro que a mistura usando DDGS (100%), o que permitiu concluir que o uso de DDGS como fonte alternativa na alimentação de cordeiros confinados pode ser recomendado em até 24% de substituição na matéria seca da dieta.

A completely randomized design was adopted and 32 Anglo Nubian goats were used, distributed in four treatments: control diet and diets with inclusion of 30 g/kg of dry matter of diet of canola, sunflower, or soybean oil. The dairy production was 182.75 kg, and there was no difference for treatments. Among the constituents, only urea nitrogen was influenced by treatment and presented lower content for control treatment. Day of lactation had an effect on lactose. Defatted dry extract and somatic cell count had a quadratic effect with minimum values around 100 and 33 days of lactation, respectively. The content of urea nitrogen, also with a quadratic effect, was higher at 93 days of lactation. For protein, there was an interaction between treatments and period and, at the end of lactation, its content was increased. The inclusion of vegetable oils promoted reduction in total saturated fatty acids (SFA) and increased the total content of monounsaturated fatty acids (MUFA) and conjugated linoleic acid. The proportions MUFA:SFA and PUFA:SFA, the atherogenicity and thrombogenicity indexes, and the relation hypocholesterolemic fatty acids:hypercholesterolemic fatty acids improved with oil addition in animal diets. The addition of vegetable oil to diets for lactating goats improve the fatty acid profile with no impairment on milk production and composition, and the milk from early stages of lactation has better nutritional quality of the lipid fraction. Pasture-based production systems and alternative foods can be used to reduce goat milk production costs by around 20%.The objective of this study was to examine the effect of substituting the corn and soybean meal of the concentrate with cassava chips and alfalfa, respectively, on the feed intake, fermentation, and rumen degradability parameters of adult, dry, empty, rumen-cannulated Saanen goats reared in a feedlot. The experiment was conducted as a Latin square design in which the following diets were tested: ground corn and soybean meal; cassava chips and soybean meal; ground corn and alfalfa; and cassava chips and alfalfa. The following variables were evaluated: feed intake, rumen parameters, short-chain fatty acid (SCFA) production, and feed degradation kinetics. Inclusion of cassava chips and alfalfa did not influence feed intake or ammonia production. Rumen pH and SCFA production were influenced by the collection times, presenting a high pH (6.29) at the first measurement (07 h 00) and then decreasing, thus influencing SCFA production throughout the day.Acetic acid and total SCFA production were influenced by the diets, with the highest values for the cassava/alfalfa diet (68.03 and 93.64 mM 100 mM-1, respectively) and the lowest values for the corn/soybean diet (55.40 and 76.03 mM 100 mM-1, respectively).Nutrient digestibility was also influenced by diets, with those containing cassava and cassava/alfalfa, providing the greatest effective degradability (57.57 to 0.02 h-1 and 53.49 to 0.05 h-1; 57.25 to 0.02 h-1and 53.26 to 0.05 h-1, respectively). This finding demonstrates that cassava and alfalfa can substitute the corn and soybean meal of concentrates without changing feed intake or the ruminal environment of goats. Rather, this substitution improves acetic acid production and diet digestibility. RESUMO Sistemas de produção baseados em pastagens e alimentos alternativos podem ser utilizados para reduzir cerca de 20% os custos de produção do leite caprino.O objetivo deste trabalho foi avaliar a influência da substituição do milho e do farelo de soja do concentrado, pela raspa de mandioca e alfafa, respectivamente, sobre o consumo, fermentação e degradabilidade ruminal de cabras adultas Saanen confinadas, vazias, secas e canuladas no rúmen. O experimento foi conduzido no delineamento em quadrado latino, com as dietas: milho triturado e farelo de soja; raspa de mandioca e farelo de soja; milho triturado e alfafa; raspa de mandioca e alfafa. Foram avaliados: consumo, parâmetros ruminais, produção de ácidos graxos de cadeia curta (AGCC) e cinética da degradação das dietas. A inclusão da raspa de mandioca e da alfafa não influenciou o consumo e a produção de amônia. O pH ruminal e as produções de AGCC foram influenciados pelos tempos de colheita,apresentando um pH elevado (6,29) na primeira mensuração (7 h 00) e diminuindo em seguida, influenciando dessa forma as produções de AGCC ao longo do dia. O ácido acético e a produção total de AGCC foram influenciados pelas dietas, sendo os maiores valores para a dieta mandioca/alfafa (68,03 e 93,64 mM 100 mM-1, respectivamente) e os menores valores para a dieta milho/soja (55,40 e 76,03 mM 100 mM-1, respectivamente).A degradabilidade dos nutrientes foi influenciada pelas dietas, sendo que as com mandioca e mandioca/alfafa apresentaram as maiores degradabilidades efetivas(57,57 para 0.02 h-1 e 53,49 para 0.05 h-1; 57,25 para 0.02 h-1 e 53,26 para 0.05 h-1, respectivamente), demonstrando que a mandioca e a alfafa podem substituir o milho e o farelo de soja dos concentrados, sem alterar o consumo e o ambiente ruminal das cabras, melhorando a produção de ácido acético e a degradabilidade da dieta.

The goal was to evaluate if feeding systems with or without milk or breed groups can improve carcass characteristics, the proportion of tissues and meat tenderness of feedlot goat kids. Were used 56 animals from five different breed groups fed by experimental diet and milk according to the treatment., without milk or with 1,5 L milk/animal/day. The kid goats were slaughtered at 30 kg of live weight, and the carcass conformation and amount of fat were determined subjectively by visual assessment. Morphometric measurements and carcass and cut yields were performed. The Longissimus lumborum muscle was separated to determinate the area and subsequently it was used to evaluate the tenderness of the meat. The feeding system changes goat carcass characteristics, and goat kids fed milk until slaughter have better carcass yield and meat quality, as it anticipates the deposition of total fat, which can benefit carcass quality, given the scarcity of fat in the carcass of goats. The breed group also influences carcass characteristics. It is recommended the use of the Boer breed up to 3/4, since more than that it reduces leg yield and does not improve the compactness index and carcass conformation.

The objective of this experiment was to evaluate the effect of 2 feeding systems and 5 breeding groups on the growth performance, biometric features, and stomach morphology of feedlot goat kids. The experiment utilized gender as a randomized blocking factor in a 5 × 2 factorial scheme. The study goats were from the Alpine, Anglo-Nubian, 1/2 Boer x Alpine, 3/4 Boer x Alpine, and 7/8 Boer x Alpine breeds. Half of the goats were fed an experimental diet, whereas the other half were given the same diet supplemented with 1.5 L milk daily. The kids were slaughtered after they attained 30 kg body weight. The 1/2 Boer x Alpine goats showed superior growth performance because they exhibiting considerable heterosis. These animals are especially easy to use given that there is no need to maintain cross-bred females (½ Boer x Alpine e ¾ Boer x Alpine) in the flock. Using milk in the feed the animals does not adversely affect growth performance or biometric features. Moreover, it helps to reduce the total weight of the stomach and leads to a 51.39% savings on feed. Dietary supplementation of milk in goat feed is recommended so long as there is excess milk available on the property.

Sixty goats (20 Alpine, 18 Anglo-Nubian, and 22 crossbred Boer), with average body weight 49.33 ± 1.41 kg, were raised on Panicum maximum cv. Tobiatã pasture with two different levels of concentrate supplementation, 300 (SL30) and 600 g kg-1 (SL60) of the daily requirements, and evaluated from the pre-mating season until an average of 110 days of lactation. Milk controls were performed every 14 days. The following milk production curve parameters were estimated: time to reach peak milk production (TP), peak milk production (PP) and milk production during the first 110 days of lactation (MP). The following milk components were determined: fat, protein, lactose, total solids (TS), defatted dry extract (DDE), urea nitrogen (UN) concentrations, and somatic cell count (SCC). Goat prolificacy and birth weight of the kids were also determined. Breed affected the lactation curve, with Alpine and Anglo- Nubian goats presenting higher TP, PP, and MP. Protein, TS, and DDE concentrations were also affected by breed, being higher for crossbred Boer goats. Milk fat, lactose concentrations, and the log of SCC were affected by the concentrate supplementation level, being higher for SL30, as well as by the breed, with crossbred Boer goats presenting higher fat concentrations and log of SCC, and crossbred Boer and Alpine goats presenting higher lactose concentrations. UN was affected by the stage of lactation. Prolificacy and birth weight were affected by breed and concentrate supplementation level, being higher for Anglo-Nubian and crossbred Boer goats with SL60. Kids from single births presented higher birth weights. The Anglo-Nubian breed presented good milk production and the best body condition, which might indicate the effectiveness of this production system, SL60 supplementation resulted in higher birth weight and prolificacy.

O cruzamento das raças Boer e Anglo Nubiana com fêmeas Alpinas apenas melhorou, nos cabritos, os rendimentos de cortes considerados de terceira categoria, como pescoço e costela. Pesos corporais de abate entre 30 e 35kg devem ser preferidos por aumentarem a proporção de lombo, reduzirem a proporção de pescoço nos Alpinos e aumentarem a de perna em Alpinos e ¾ Boer, além de proporcionarem quantidades adequadas de músculo e gordura intermuscular. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the commercial cuts, loin tissues and composition proportions in meant from five racial groups: Alpine, ½ Boer + ½ Alpine (½ BA), ½ Anglo Nubian + ½ Alpine (½ ANA), ¾ Boer + ¼ Alpine (¾ BA), ¼ Boer + ¼ Alpine + ½ Anglo Nubian (Tricross), submitted to three slaughter weights (25, 30 and 35kg) in feedlot, using a complete diet. The crossing of Boer and Anglo Nubian with Alpine females only improved, in kids, the yield of cuts considered third category such as neck and rib. Slaughter body weights between 30 and 35kg should be preferred due to increase in the proportion of the loin, reduction in the proportion of the neck in Alpine and increase in the leg in Alpine and ¾ Boer, beyond the appropriate amounts of intermuscular fat and muscle. As dietas experimentais utilizadas apresentaram relação concentrado:volumoso 65:35. Os tratamentos foram caracterizados por níveis crescentes 0, 33, 67 e 100% de silagem de grãos úmidos de milho (SGUM) em substituição ao grão seco de milho (GSM). As médias de consumo de MS (1,62 kg/dia, 3,90 %PV), proteína bruta (0,22 kg/dia), carboidratos não fibrosos (0,76 kg/dia) e nutrientes digestíveis totais (1,29 kg/dia) não foram influenciadas pelos níveis de SGUM. Entretanto, o consumo de FDN (0,53 kg/dia) foi significativo para os diferentes níveis de SGUM. A produção diária de leite e produção de leite corrigida a 3,5% de gordura (kg/dia), eficiência alimentar (PL/CMS), porcentagens de gordura, proteína, lactose, sólidos totais e nitrogênio ureico do leite, com médias de 1,86; 1,69; 1,11; 2,96; 2,85; 4,36; 10,96 e 17,1, respectivamente, não foram influenciados pelos níveis de SGUM. A porcentagem de extrato seco desengordurado (8.00%) foi afetada pelos níveis de substituição da SGUM. A utilização de silagem de grãos úmidos de milho na dieta não altera a produção de leite e pode aplicada em substituição parcial ou total ao grão seco de milho na alimentação de cabras leiteiras. Twenty primiparous and multiparous Alpine breed goats at approximately 80 days of lactation were used in this experiment. The animals were housed individually in metal cages and distributed according to milk production in five 4 × 4 Latin squares. The experimental diets used in the experiment presented concentrate:forage ratio of 65:35. The treatments were characterized by increasing levels of 0, 33, 67 and 100% of high moisture corn silage (HMCS) replacing corn dry grain (CDG). Average intake of DM (1.62 kg/day, 3.90 % BW), CP (0.22 kg/day), NFC (0.76 kg/day) and TDN (1.29 kg/day) were not influenced by levels of HMCS. However, intake of NDF (0.53 kg/day) was significant for the different level of HMCS. Daily milk production and production of milk correct at 3.5% of fat, feed efficiency (MP/DMI), fat percentage, protein, lactose, total solids and milk urea nitrogen, with means of 1.86; 1.69; 1.11; 2.96; 2.85; 4.36; 10.96 and 17.1, respectively, were not influenced by the levels of HMCS. Percentage of non fat solids (8.00%) was affected by replacing levels of HMCS. The use of high moisture corn silage in the diet does not change milk production and it can be applied in total or partial substitution to dry corn grain in the feeding of milk goats.
