Different chemical substances and too much water are used during leather production. Therefore, the waste water load of the leather industry is harmful to the environment. One of the pollution source is the production of leather coloring process is a further need to focus on the removal of dye waste waters subject. These water-soluble dyes have a small organic molecular size. Besides the environmental hazards that these dyes cannot be underestimated, they also have harmful effects on human health. In this study, poly (hydroxyethyl methacrylate-glycidyl methacrylate) p (HEMA-GMA) hydrogel membranes were synthesized by UV polymerization method. The hydrogel synthesized is modified with imino diacetic acid (IDA) and then chelated with trivalent chromium ions. The chelating capacity of the membranes were determined according to the time, pH and concentration parameters. Dynamic swelling test, elemental analysis, ninhydrin analysis and adsorption, desorption and reusability performances of membranes were also determined. As a result of the analyzes, it was understood that the hydrogel membrane had high adsorption capacity. The adsorption capacity of the p (HEMA-GMA) -IDA-Cr (III) hydrogel membrane did not decrease even after 5 desorption. At the end of the fifth cycle, the membrane was found to have a dye-binding capacity of about 92%. According to these results, the reusable property of the membrane also makes it cost effective as well as effective adsorption.

Aim: Formoterol, N-[2-hydroxy-5-(1-hydroxy-2-(4-methoxyphenyl)-1-methylethyl)amino ethyl] is a bronchodilator used in the treatment of obstructive airways diseases.With this preliminary study,we aimed to develop an effective interaction between formoterol and specifically designed nanoparticle based polymeric structures for it under laboratory conditions.This effort relates to developing a new generation medicinal aerosol formulations with nanocarriers in our following studies. Method: Considering abundance of structural rings of formoterol, we chose tryptophan as one of the well-known hydrophobic polymers. p(HEMA) (2-hydroxyethyl methacrylate) nanoparticles were prepared by surfactant free emulsion polymerization and then grafted with L-Tryptophan according to the procedure [1]. Results: L-Tryptophan graft p(HEMA)nanocarriers were characterized by SEM,FTIR,Zeta Sizer.System parameters such as medium pH,adsorption time,adsorption capacity,initial concentration of formoterol-fumarate were optimized. After the optimization of these parameters, formoterol-fumarate releases studying were carried out in different medium pH and drug release kinetic models were also determined. Conclusion: As a result of our initial laboratory experiments,we observed that there were intense hydrophobic interactions between Graft-Trp-p(HEMA) nanocarriers and formoterol.Preliminary findings of this ongoing study look promising. Formoterol and specifically designed Graft-Trp-p(HEMA) nanocarriers have got interaction on laboratory conditions, thus create a highly bioavailable formulation in the future could be possible.Yet the final optimization works still continue.

In this study, p(HEMA–GMA) poly(hydroxyethyl methacrylate-co-glycidyl methacrylate) spherical particulated membranes (SPMs) were produced by UV-photopolymerization and the synthesized SPMs were coupled with iminodiacetic acid (IDA). Finally the novel SPMs were chelated with Cr(III) ions as ligand and used for removing acid black 210 dye. Characterizations of the metal-chelated SPMs were made by SEM, FTIR and swelling test. The water absorption capacities and acid dye adsorption properties of the SPMs were investigated and the results were 245.0, 50.0, 55.0 and 51.9% for p(HEMA), p(HEMA–GMA), p(HEMA–GMA)-IDA and p(HEMA–GMA)-IDA-Cr(III) SPMs respectively. Adsorption properties of the p(HEMA–GMA)-IDA-Cr(III) SPMs were investigated under different conditions such as different initial dye concentrations and pH. The optimum pH was observed at 4.3 and the maximum adsorption capacity was determined as 885.14 mg/g at about 8000 ppm initial dye concentration. The concentrations of the dyes were determined using a UV/Vis Spectrophotometer at a wavelength of 435 nm. Reusability of p(HEMA–GMA)-IDA-Cr(III) SPMs was also shown for five adsorption–desorption cycles without considerable decrease in its adsorption capacity. Finally, the results showed that the metal-chelated p(HEMA–GMA)-IDA SPMs were effective sorbent systems removing acid dye from leather waste water.

Poly(2-hydroxyethyl methacrylate-co-N-methacryloyl-(l)-glutamic acid) p(HEMA–MAGA) nanospheres have been synthesized, characterized, and used for the adsorption of Cd2+ ions from aqueous solutions. Nanospheres were prepared by surfactant free emulsion polymerization. The p(HEMA–MAGA) nanospheres were characterized by SEM, FTIR, zeta size, and elemental analysis. The specific surface area of nanospheres was found to be 1,779 m2/g. According to zeta size analysis results, average size of nanospheres is 147.3 nm with poly-dispersity index of 0.200. The goal of this study was to evaluate the adsorption performance of p(HEMA–MAGA) nanospheres for Cd2+ ions from aqueous solutions by a series of batch experiments. The Cd2+ concentration was determined by inductively coupled plasma-optical emission spectrometer. Equilibrium sorption experiments indicated a Cd2+ uptake capacity of 44.2 mg g−1 at pH 4.0 at 25 °C. The adsorption of Cd2+ ions increased with increasing pH and reached a plateau value at around pH 4.0. The data were successfully modeled with a Langmuir equation. A series of kinetics experiments was then carried out and a pseudo-second order equation was used to fit the experimental data. Desorption experiments which were carried out with nitric acid showed that the p(HEMA–MAGA) nanospheres could be reused without significant losses of their initial properties in consecutive adsorption and elution operations.
