Introduction: The transmission of viruses between species and the emergence of viral pandemics are threats to public health and with catastrophic aftermath for the population. Objective: The objective of this research was evaluated actions of Brazilian dentists concerning covid-19 during the first wave of the pandemic. Material and methods: The survey was conducted with a web-based questionnaire, from 8th July to 8th August 2020. The participants answered questions about socio-demographic factors, followed by actions towards the covid-19, that include service offered in the pandemic period, personal protective equipment (PPE), mode of prevention, emergency with a suspect case and urgency with a confirmed case. All data were submitted to descriptive and inferential statistics with a 5% significance level. Results: A total of 393 participants were recruited, 27.7% men and 72.3% women with a median age of 30 years (21 - 61). About service offered in the pandemic period 53.4 % of the participants answered to operate as a "usual service with a longer period between patients". Professionals who do not work in universities have adopted actions of "increasing the time between dental appointments" (p = 0.04) or "operate as usual" (p = 0,02). Nearly PPE, 48,9% wore an N-95 mask. Regarding mode of prevention, older and more experienced dentists adopted more preventive measures than younger and more experienced dentists (p > 0.05), in addition, men choose pre-procedural mouthwash with PVPI more than women (p = 0.014). Likewise, those who work at universities also choose pre-procedural mouthwash with PVPI more than those who do not work at universities (p = 0.004). The action regarding urgency and emergency care varied according to the educational level of the participant. Conclusion: It is important to emphasize that during this moment of uncertainty, it is necessary to be constantly aware of new scientific evidence. While generally accepting of federal and state recommendations, respondents seemed to desire more guidance during the initial phase of the pandemic. Objective: The aim of the study was to assess the quality of life (QOL), oral health-related QOL (OHRQOL), temporomandibular disorders (TMDs), and psychological factors in patients with skeletal Class III malocclusion with cleft lip and palate (CLP) and without CLP. Design: Case–control. Setting: Primary care, institutional practice. Patients: One hundred thirty-six patients with skeletal Class III malocclusion with CLP (n = 68) and without CLP (n = 68). Main outcome measures: QOL and OHRQOL were assessed using the World Health Organization Quality of Life-BREF (WHOQOL-BREF) questionnaire and the Oral Health Impact Profile-14 questionnaire, respectively. TMDs and psychological factors were assessed using the Research Diagnostic Criteria for TMD (RDC/TMD). Results: No differences in QOL were found between the groups (P > 0.05). Patients with CLP reported a better OHRQOL (P = 0.025) in the physical pain, physical disability, and psychological disability domains (P < 0.05). Patients with CLP presented with less myofascial pain (OR, 0.28; 95% CI, 0.11-0.71] and other articular conditions (OR 0.24; 95% CI 0.06-0.90]. More patients with CLP reported no chronic pain (P = 0.012). The QOL of patients with CLP with no depression or with no nonspecific physical symptoms including pain (NSPSIP) was better than that of patients without CLP. The OHRQOL of patients with CLP without TMDs or no psychological factors was better than that of patients without CLP. Conclusions: Patients with skeletal Class III malocclusion who require orthognathic surgery with CLP have better OHRQOL and present with fewer TMDs than those patients without CLP. Objective: To evaluate the association of bruxism phenotypes with single nucleotide polymorphisms in FKBP5, DRD2, ANKK1, and COMT.Methods: Clinical oral examination was performed to diagnose bruxism phenotypes in 150 children. DNA was collected from saliva. Logistic univariate regression, Chi-square, and Fisher's exact tests were performed (p < 0.05).Results: Bruxism was associated with DRD2 (p = 0.02). Tooth grinding while awake was associated with ANKK1 (p < 0.001), and tooth grinding while asleep was associated with DRD2 in the additive (p = 0.030) and dominant (p = 0.008) model. Tooth clenching while awake was associated with ANKK1 in the additive (p = 0.005) and dominant (p = 0.008) models, whereas tooth clenching while asleep was associated with ANKK1 (p < 0.001) and with COMT in the additive (p = 0.001) and dominant (p = 0.003) models.Discussion: Polymorphisms in DRD2, ANKK1, and COMT are associated with bruxism phenotypes. Introduction: The temporomandibular joint seems to respond to functional demands as it is continually subjected to remodeling, which affects volume and shape. Altered functioning can lead to TMJ overload, resulting in temporomandibular disorders. Objective: This study evaluates condylar anatomical changes and temporomandibular dysfunctions in orthognathic patients. Material and methods: This cross-sectional study was evaluated 174 Patients were between 18 and 57 years old representing facial patterns I (n = 51), II (n = 59), and III (n = 64). Morphology, morphometry and volumetry of 348 condylar processes were analyzed using cone beam computed tomography. Diagnosis of TMD was evaluated using Research Diagnostic Criteria for TMD (RDC/TMD). P values <0.05 were considered significant. Results: Patients with facial pattern II had more morphological changes than I (p <0.05). For morphometric analysis, the width of the condylar processes among patients with pattern II was shorter than I and III (p <0.001). Height of the condylar processes in patients with pattern III was greater than I and II (p <0.001). Volume of the left condylar process in patients with pattern II was lower than I (p = 0.02). Muscle disorders and other joint conditions were more common in women than men (p <0.05). Patients with pattern II had more muscular disorders and other joint conditions than I (p <0.05). Patients with pattern III showed more muscle disorders and disc displacement than I (p <0.05). Conclusion: Orthognathic patients have condylar anatomical changes that may facilitating temporomandibular disorders when compared to non-orthognathic patients. Condylar process morphology and morphometry can make it possible to define an anatomical pattern to contribute to decisionmaking regarding the treatment or not of a given temporomandibular disorders. Introduction: Bilateral sagittal split osteotomy is the best-established orthognathic surgical technique for mandibular dentofacial deformities correction. Some technique-related complications may occur, being paresthesia the most common. Objective: To subjectively evaluate postoperative sensitivity of individuals who underwent orthognathic surgery. Material and methods: A two-part questionnaire was answered by thirty subjects in different post-operative periods: 48 hours (T1), 7 days (T2), 14 days (T3), 30 days (T4), 60 days (T5) and 90 days (T6). Significance level was set at 0.05. Results: In part one, the Nature of Altered Sensation evaluation was performed in chin and lips. There was an improvement from T1 to T6 in regarding locations of the altered sensation (p < 0.001), moments of the altered sensation (p = 0.001), and in pain or other unpleasant sensation (p = 0.003). Other variables regarding the Nature of the Altered Sensation did not show statistically significance difference over time (p > 0.05). Regarding part two, functional impairment, it was noted that there was an improvement in T6 in relation to all variables (p < 0.05). There is a decrease in pain, lip bites, burning sensation and drooling sensation (p < 0.05). Also, there was a decrease in the difficulty for oral care. Introduction: This study aimed to evaluate if single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) in runt-related transcription factor 2 (RUNX2) and bone morphogenetic protein 2 (BMP2) are associated with different craniofacial patterns. Furthermore, we also investigated if RUNX2 and BMP2 expression in the maxilla and mandible are differently expressed according to facial phenotypes and influenced by the SNPs in their encoding genes. Orthognathic patients were included. Materials and Methods: Lateral cephalometric radiographs were used to classify facial phenotypes based on Steiner's ANB and Ricketts' NBa-PtGn angles. Bone samples from 21 patients collected during orthognathic surgery were used for the gene expression assays. DNA from 129 patients was used for genotyping the SNPs rs59983488 and rs1200425 in RUNX2 and rs235768 and rs1005464 in BMP2. The established alpha was 5%. Results: A statistically significant difference was observed in the relative BMP2 expression in the mandible between Class I and III participants (P = 0.042). Homozygous GG (rs59983488) had higher RUNX2 expression (P = 0.036) in the mandible. In maxilla, GG (rs1200425) had a higher BMP2 expression (P = 0.038). Discussion: In conclusion, BMP2 is expressed differently in the mandible of Class I and Class III participants. The aim of this study was to evaluate patient perception of surgical discomfort in third molar surgery and the association with clinical variables and polymorphisms associated with the FKBP5, SLC6A4, and COMT genes. This cross-sectional observational study was carried out on 196 participants aged between 18 and 64 years at the Federal University of Paraná in 11 months. The intensity of surgical discomfort was assessed using the QCirDental questionnaire. Data on surgical and individual procedures were also cataloged. The oral health related quality of life was assessed by the Oral Health Impact Profile questionnaire (OHIP-14). The DNA sample was obtained from cells of the oral mucosa. Five markers of the FKBP5, SLC6A4, and COMT genes were genotyped. The data were submitted to statistical analysis with a significance level of 5%. Women reported greater intensity of discomfort associated with third molar surgery compared to men (p = 0.001). In the recessive model, the AA genotype of the rs3800373 marker was associated with greater surgical discomfort (p = 0.026). Therefore, women and individuals of the AA genotype for the rs3800373 marker in the FKBP5 gene reported greater surgical discomfort associated with third molar surgery. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Introduction and Objective: Individuals with dentofacial deformities have a greater negative impact on oral health and in quality of life. The aim of this study was identified the main factors involved in the perception of the oral health related quality of life in individuals with dentofacial deformities. Material and methods: In a crosssectional study, were evaluated 72 individuals in preoperative period of orthognathic surgery at the Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery Service at Federal University of Paraná and at Positivo University. The age, gender, facial profile, presence or absence of asymmetry and temporomandibular disorders (TMD) symptoms were accessed. Through the Oral Health Impact Profile-14 (OHIP-14) the perceptions about oral health related quality of life of the patients was accessed. The TMD symptoms were evaluated with Fonseca anamnestic index. Data were submitted to descriptive and inferential statistical analysis with a significance level of 0.05. Results: The OHIP-14 mean score was higher with increasing age (p= 0.007), in females (p= 0.076), asymmetric patients (p= 0.030). and according to the increase in reported TMD symptoms (p= 0.001). Individuals with no TMD symptoms had an OHIP-14 mean of 8.86±8.06; individuals with mild TMD had a mean of 15±6.28, moderate TMD had a mean of 20.6 ± 9.44 and severe TMD had a mean of 26.42±7.66. There were no differences between OHIP-14 and type of facial profile (p= 0.725). Conclusion: It is concluded that increasing age, female gender, presence of asymmetry and the severity of TMD symptoms are important factors related to poor oral health related quality of life in individuals with dentofacial deformities.
