SCHOOL attendance , *COLLEGE students , *LOGISTIC regression analysis , *SCHOOL year , *SCHOLARSHIPS - Abstract
This article seeks to determine whether there are differences in persistence between students with and without scholarships and analyse the factors associated with the persistence of students with scholarships. The cohort of students with scholarships for access to the University of Barcelona in the academic year 2011-2012 were analysed. This cohort consisted of 2613 students, and is the last one that can be analysed to establish the persistence of students with incomerelated scholarships, as it was affected by the 2013 scholarship reform. Bivariate techniques showed that students with scholarships have greater persistence than students without scholarships. In addition, the binary logistic regression model indicated that the academic variables were the ones that contributed to explaining persistence, as they played a stronger role in students with scholarships. Ensuring equal educational opportunities thus remains a challenge for university policy. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

LANDSLIDES , *LANDSLIDE hazard analysis , *REMOTE sensing , *DEBRIS avalanches , *NATURAL disasters , *LOGISTIC regression analysis , *NATURAL disaster warning systems - Abstract
Landslides triggered by rainfall are among the most frequent causes of natural disasters in mountainous terrains. However, landslide susceptibility assessments are often limited due to the scarcity of reliable observations. Due to this lack of data, especially in developing countries, remote sensing is used for landslide susceptibility analysis. This study presents the application of remote sensing data and a logistic regression model to assess landslide susceptibility in a basin on a remote terrain in the northern Colombian Andes, where a rainstorm on May 18th, 2015, triggered more than 40 landslides and an associated debris flow afterwards. The methodology applied is based on free access remote sensing tools, since the study area is considered a scarce-data zone. The results show that free remote sensing tools provide enough information to run a model as logistic regression and achieve a successful first approach to the landslide susceptibility map of complex terrains as the study area. This suggests that the proposed methodology could be implemented in several regions with similar characteristics based only on free access information. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

LITERATURE reviews , *TRANSACTION costs , *COFFEE growers , *AGRICULTURAL economics , *FACTOR analysis - Abstract
The aim of this research is to analyze the relationship between formal and informal institutions with transaction costs (bargaining and monitoring) of coffee growers in the State of Mexico. For this purpose, a measurement instrument was constructed based on a literature review and the participation of key actors, whose construct validity was evaluated through an exploratory factor analysis. The questionnaire was applied to 100 coffee growers during the year 2020. Subsequently, the factor loads for everyone were extracted and stratified to estimate a binary logistic regression model. Findings suggest that informal institutions such as trust, cooperation links and reciprocity were statistically significant with negative coefficients, which implies that an informal institutional frame reduces transaction costs. In contrast, belonging to a producer organization and receiving technical advice from the Apoyos a Pequeños Productores program in its Extensionismo component were not statistically significant.

GEOGRAPHIC name changes , *STREET names , *STREETSCAPES (Urban design) , *REGIME change , *CITIES & towns - Abstract
Political geographers and sociologists working in the field of critical toponymies have demonstrated that renaming the streetscape follows invariably after a regime change. Scholars have barely gone beyond documenting the extent of toponymic change at the level of particular places, however, usually the capital cities of countries from the former socialist bloc and other postdictatorial societies. This article sets out to address toponymic changes at the country level, by examining the complete national street nomenclature in postsocialist urban Romania. For this purpose, a data set comprising the entire collection of urban street names in Romania, together with all the street name changes that occurred during postsocialism, was constructed from multiple sources (N = 37,076). A series of multilevel logistic regression analyses were performed to model statistically the effects of various street- and locality-level variables on postsocialist street renaming. The results of these multilevel logistic regression analyses indicate that toponymic revision after the fall of state socialism is shaped by the intersection of street-level properties (e.g., artery class and features regarding the street name itself) and locality-level characteristics (e.g., the historicity of urban status and the ethnopolitics played out at the level of each city and town). The article is the first to analyze the shifting political geography of urban nomenclatures at a national level based on a complete data set of street names. The analytical model advanced in this article, based on postsocialist Romania, could be used to inform similar research on other geographical settings and historical contexts. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Objective: This article examines the relationship between innovation and regional economic resilience in an emerging economy. Method: This is a quantitative and descriptive research that uses a logistic regression based on socio-economic indicators of the 101 most populous Brazilian municipalities and considers regional resilience through employment data. Originality/relevance: Although innovation has been identified as a source of regional economic resilience, the context of emerging economies has often been overlooked, resulting in a narrow view of this relationship. Results: The findings show that innovation did not act as a classification variable for (non-)resilient regions. Municipalities characterized by greater proximity to ports, greater per capita Internet access, and the presence of technology parks showed less resilience during the Covid-19 pandemic compared to the national average performance, which is counterintuitive. In addition, a positive relationship was found between lower tax burden and regional resilience. Theoretical contribution: The empirical research conducted helps to understand the specific impact of a crisis such as the pandemic in an emerging economy. The results also suggest that innovation is not a sufficient condition for regional resilience in the short run. Practical contributions: The article points to the need to strengthen innovation capacities in regions of an emerging economy, which, if underdeveloped, are unable to act as an immune system in the face of a pandemic shock.

URBAN growth , *SUPPORT vector machines , *LOGISTIC regression analysis - Abstract
The objective was to detect, model and predict the urban growth of population centers in different hydrological basins of Chihuahua, Mexico. Urban growth was modeled to predict 2030, 2040 and 2050 future scenarios using logistic regression and CA-Markov incorporated in the Land Change Modeler (LCM) integrated in IDRISI. Land use maps for the years 2010, 2015 and 2020 were produced using Support Vector Machine (SVM). The most intense land use changes (LULC) occurred in the period 2010-2015, the increase in urban areas comes mostly from forests. The RL model proved to be consistent showing McFadden's Pseudo R2 greater than 0.2. Receiver Operating Characteristic (ROC) values are considered acceptable. In the simulated urban land use, the highest growth is observed in the year 2030, and a low rate is identified for 2040 and 2050. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Academic performance (AP) is a proper pedagogical strategy to determine acquisition of learning outcomes. Monitoring is essential for decision-making regarding accompanying plans and improving educational quality. Saber-Pro is a standardized test applied by the Colombian Government to establish the ability in quantitative, English, critical reading, citizen comprehension, and written communication. The main objective is to determine which sociodemographic, pedagogical, and institutional factors will arise in AP. A canonical discriminant analysis was used to classify 100% of the student, and the risk of low AP was estimated. The model supports variables that explain potentiate risk factors associated with AP in engineering students according to Saber-Pro. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

- Abstract
The survival competing risks model in discrete time based on multinomial logistic regression, proposed by Luo et al. (2016), models the non-linear and irregular shape of hazard functions by incorporating a time-dependent spline into the multinomial logistic regression. This model also directly includes longitudinal variables in the regression. Due to the issues arising from including both baseline and longitudinal covariates in the extended form as proposed, and considering that the latter may be subject to error, this article suggests an extension of the existing model. The proposed extension utilizes the concept of joint models for longitudinal and survival data, which is an effective approach for integrating simultaneousness both baseline and time-dependent covariates into the survival model.

ATTITUDES toward technology , *OLDER people , *LOGISTIC regression analysis , *QUANTITATIVE research ,DEVELOPED countries - Abstract
Due to the global increase in the population aged 60 years or older, it has been sought to know the role of technological tools to promote well-being in this population group, however, most of the studies that have been carried out provide information mainly from developed countries, and the characteristics of this sector of the population in Latin American countries are known to a lesser extent; therefore, this quantitative research of non-experimental, cross-sectional and explanatory design, the relationship of some sociodemographic and psychological variables (health perception, loneliness and attitude towards computers) with the use of the Internet in older people was analyzed. A total of 4,588 elderly people participated (62.1% women and 37.9% men), with a mean age of 70.15 years. Instruments that evaluated attitudes towards computers, perception of loneliness, use of technological tools and a questionnaire with sociodemographic questions were applied. The results of the logistic regression showed that increased efficiency and interest in computers, better perception of health, higher income and school level, as well as lower age and loneliness, are associated with an increased probability that older people use the internet frequently.

The objective of this study is to explore the effects of the Covid-19 pandemic on the portfolio of a saving and credit cooperative in Portoviejo, Ecuador, and to identify factors associated with the probability of reporting slowness. The literature addressing the effects of the pandemic on financial institutions has focused primarily on the rapid digitization of the industry and, geographically, in developed countries. To date, little literature has reported on the effect of the pandemic on saving and credit cooperatives in developing countries. A case study was designed with mixed-methods, combining regulatory content and cooperatives reports with a sample database of credit transactions between January 2019 and December 2021, and the data were analyzed using hypothesis testing and regression analysis. The variables that were best associated with the likelihood of a borrower reporting late payments are the amount of the credit, the time the credit was extended whether before or after the onset of the pandemic, and the sex of the borrowing member. The results can inform new experimental studies that will provide a deeper understanding of what works and what does not work for credit cooperatives during periods of crisis.

In 2017, at the foot of the Tlaloc volcano, occurred the largest forest fire in the State of Mexico (2500 ha), with surface and crown (canopy) phases, on plantations of various species and various types of vegetation. Studies on the effects of fires on trees serve to define mortality and whether or not restoration will be required in an affected area. The hypothesis was: the greater the intensity and severity of the fire and the smaller the size of the trees, the greater the probability of mortality. The objective of the study was to establish the fire severity and dasometric variables that influence the probability of both mortality and resprouting in Casuarina equisetifolia L. plantations affected by fire. The study was conducted at the Experimental Forestry Station “Las Cruces” (Universidad Autónoma Chapingo, State of Mexico). In 2019, 442 trees (15 sites of 100 m² ) were sampled in 50 ha of plantations affected by the fire. Records were made on whether the trees were alive or dead, normal diameter, bark thickness, height, height at the base of the original crown, height of the fire scar on the trunk, height of crown scorch and presence of resprouting. The statistical analysis consisted of logistic regressions, using the Proc Logistic procedure of the SAS program. The average tree mortality was 63 %. The variable that was directly related (p ≤ 0.05) to the probability of mortality was the height of the scar above the trunk. The dasometric variables inversely related (p ≤ 0.05) with the probability of mortality were: height, normal diameter and bark thickness. For resprouting probability, there was an inverse relationship (p ≤ 0.05) with normal diameter, bark thickness and height of scar on the trunk. It is concluded that casuarina is a fire sensitive species. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

It has been postulated that human affect and emotions can be classified according to three basic dimensions: Valence, activation, and dominance, and that the relationship between them is similar in all human groups. The International Affective Picture System (IAPS) is a set of visual stimuli widely used in research on emotions and its methodology facilitates the comparison of results between different studies. The objective of this work was to compare the normative values of the United States of America (USA) with a sample from Mexico, using the methodology with labels to measure the intensity of the valence, dominance, and activation of the presented images. 1,194 images were presented to 1,673 undergraduate university students (21±4.42 years old), who, according to the original methodology proposed in the standardization of the IAPS in the USA, established through the Self-Assessment Manikin the value caused in each dimension. The results indicated that the Mexican normative values are like those of the sample in the USA: A general correlation was found between countries of r=.94 (women r=.94 / men r=.92); in valence, r=.82 (r=.80 / r=.79); in activation, r=.77 (r=.76 / r=.59); and in dominance. Differences were also found between groups (p<0.05) in the value of 510 (43%), 701 (59%) and 526 (44%) images of valence, activation, and dominance, respectively, between both countries. The visual review of the valence-activation graph of the Mexican sample shows the characteristic two-dimensional boomerang shape reported by USA. However, the appearance of an effect of emotional labeling is discussed as a possible explanation for the phenomenon and its implication in the results. Recommendations for future studies are discussed. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The main objective of this research study was to determine the factors that influence the adoption of nanotechnology in quinoa farming. A binary logistic regression model is applied and 52 farming units are assessed through semi-structured conversations using the relational coexistence method. There are 17 variables: 14 qualitative and 3 quantitative. The dependent/endogenous variable considered was the use of nanotechnology. The results show that the variable guaranteed harvest was significant, an aspect mentioned by 85% of farmers. This variable affects the probability of using nanotechnology, being affected by the rural area's diversity maintenance, multifunctionality, and heterogeneity. In conclusion, these results open a debate about the coexistence of technology in rural spaces with respect to its discursive productive construction, in addition to the need for conducting participatory field studies to improve decision-making processes. - Abstract
School refusal has important repercussions on the lives of children and adolescents, seriously affecting their personal, academic, and social adjustment. Negative attitudes towards school can be caused simultaneously for several reasons and, due to the existing heterogeneity, Kearney, and Silverman (1990) grouped them into four functional conditions: I. Avoidance of school stimuli that generate negative affectivity; II. Avoidance of school situations that generate social aversion or fear of evaluation; II. Capturing the attention of significant others; and IV. Get tangible reinforcements outside of school. Given its tendency to coexist with internalizing disorders, it is essential to understand its correlation with school anxiety, which is one of the significant problems in the child and adolescent population. In this way, the present study aims to identify the probability of predictive capacity of school anxiety on high school refusal. There were 1786 participants (51% men) aged 15 to 18 years (MAge = 16.31; SD = 1.00). The instruments administered were the Spanish version of the School Refusal Assessment Scale-Revised (SRAS-R-C; Gonzálvez et al., 2016) and the School Anxiety Inventory (IAES; García-Fernández et al., 2011). The results reveal that depending on the dimension of school anxiety evaluated, it acts as a negative or positive predictor of school refusal, also depending on the type of school refusal assessed. These findings highlight the connection between the avoidance of negative affectivity associated with school and the experience of anxiety in various school settings, emphasizing the need to address both school refusal and anxiety in the educational setting., El rechazo escolar tiene importantes repercusiones en la vida de niños y adolescentes, afectando gravemente a su ajuste personal, académico y social.
