Introduction: Retroperitoneal bronchogenic cyst, typically situated in the subdiaphragmatic region, is a rare congenital benign developmental abnormality arising from dysplasia of the foregut and abnormal budding of the tracheobronchial tree. Due to its low incidence, there are limited reports regarding this condition. Case presentation: Four retroperitoneal bronchogenic cysts near the left adrenal gland were identified without accompanying clinical symptoms. One case was misdiagnosed as an adrenal tumor prior to surgery, while the others were diagnosed as retroperitoneal cysts of uncertain origin. All cases underwent surgical resection, with three being performed laparoscopically and one utilizing robot-assisted techniques. Pathological reports confirmed the diagnosis of bronchogenic cyst in each instance. The prognosis was favorable for all four patients, with no complications or recurrences observed. Additionally, a literature review was conducted, encompassing 82 cases, which revealed similar characteristics and radiological manifestations in the majority of cases. Conclusion: Although retroperitoneal bronchogenic cysts are rare developmental malformations lacking distinctive clinical and radiological features, reported cases exhibit similarities in certain clinical and imaging characteristics. Primary leiomyosarcoma of the inferior vena cava (IVC) is a rare and aggressive mesenchymal tumor, with less than 400 reported cases to date. Complete resection of the tumor with clear margins is the only proven curative treatment, providing survival benefits. Nonetheless, leiomyosarcomas in the middle segment or those extending up to it within the inferior vena cava (IVC) frequently necessitate renal reimplantation or nephrectomy, with rates varying between 56% and 75%. In this case report, we present a 65-year-old female with lower segment IVC leiomyosarcoma with middle segment extension, successfully resected and reconstructed while avoiding associated renal reimplantation or nephrectomy morbidity. Solid pseudopapillary neoplasm (SPN) is a rare tumor mostly occurring in the pancreas. They are low-grade malignant tumors of the exocrine pancreas that occasionally metastasize, usually to the liver or peritoneum. Additionally, multiple metastases of extrapancreatic SPN to the liver are extremely rare and have been reported before. This study presents a case of a 13-year-old male patient with retroperitoneal SPN and multiple hepatic metastases. The patient presented with abdominal trauma and underwent enhanced CT, which revealed upper pancreatic occupancy and three hypodense foci in the right lobe of the liver. Moreover, increased spleen size was noted. The patient's serum tumor marker CA125 was increased to 39.00 U/mL (N < 35.0 U/mL), and circulating tumor cells were elevated to 10.2 FU/3 mL (N < 8.7 FU/3 mL). The patient underwent retroperitoneal occupancy resection and splenectomy, followed by resection of liver metastases 7 months after the surgery. Furthermore, multiple liver metastases from retroperitoneal SPN were confirmed postoperatively. The patient recovered for 1 year without tumor recurrence. This case emphasizes the importance of evaluating serum tumor markers and medical imaging in young patients as well as the fact that surgery appears to be the preferred treatment option formultiplemetastases in SPN. Introduction Leiomyosarcoma of the inferior vena cava is associated with poor prognosis. Complete resection is the only curative treatment. We present a patient with this disease in whom cine magnetic resonance imaging was valuable in selecting the surgical strategy and mitigating invasiveness. Case presentation A 68‐year‐old woman presented with right‐sided abdominal pain. Computed tomography revealed an 86 mm tumor in the right retroperitoneal space that extended into the inferior vena cava and reached superiorly to the right atrium. Percutaneous needle biopsy confirmed leiomyosarcoma. Cine magnetic resonance imaging demonstrated no adhesions between the tumor and the upper segment of inferior vena cava wall, nor with the right atrial wall, indicating resectability. Radical tumor resection was successfully performed without requiring thoracotomy. Conclusion Cine magnetic resonance imaging appears to be useful in inferior vena cava leiomyosarcoma for evaluating adhesions between the tumor and vessel wall.

Wunderlich syndrome is characterized by the presence of abdominal pain, hematuria, and hypovolemic shock. We report a rare case of a 25-year-old pregnant woman, who came to the emergency department due to the sudden onset of low back pain and diaphoresis. The patient, during medical evaluation, experienced an altered state of consciousness. Diagnosed with hypovolemic shock, she was admitted to the operating room, where examination of the abdominal cavity revealed a left retroperitoneal hematoma. Damage control surgery was performed, but given the postoperative clinical deterioration, computerized tomography angiography of the abdomen was performed, showing a mass-like lesion arising from the upper pole of the left kidney, consistent with Wunderlich syndrome. Left nephrectomy was the definitive treatment for the 10-cm renal angiomyolipoma. Since Wunderlich syndrome is a potentially lethal entity, CT is usually the preferred diagnostic approach, and supra-selective vascular embolization is the first-line treatment. Objective: To describe the clinical and sonographic characteristics of benign, retroperitoneal, pelvic peripheral‐nerve‐sheath tumors (PNSTs). Methods: This was a retrospective study of patients with a benign, retroperitoneal, pelvic PNST who had undergone preoperative ultrasound examination at a single gynecologic oncology center between 1 January 2018 and 31 August 2022. All ultrasound images, videoclips and final histological specimens of benign PNSTs were reviewed side‐by‐side in order to: describe the ultrasound appearance of the tumors, using the terminology of the International Ovarian Tumor Analysis (IOTA), Morphological Uterus Sonographic Assessment (MUSA) and Vulvar International Tumor Analysis (VITA) groups, following a predefined ultrasound assessment form; describe their origin in relation to nerves and pelvic anatomy; and assess the association between their ultrasound features and histotopography. A review of the literature reporting benign, retroperitoneal, pelvic PNSTs with preoperative ultrasound examination was performed. Results: Five women (mean age, 53 years) with a benign, retroperitoneal, pelvic PNST were identified, four with a schwannoma and one with a neurofibroma, of which all were sporadic and solitary. All patients had good‐quality ultrasound images and videoclips and final biopsy of surgically excised tumors, except one patient managed conservatively who had only a core needle biopsy. In all cases, the findings were incidental. The five PNSTs ranged in maximum diameter from 31 to 50 mm. All five PNSTs were solid, moderately vascular tumors, with non‐uniform echogenicity, well‐circumscribed by hyperechogenic epineurium and with no acoustic shadowing. Most of the masses were round (n = 4 (80%)), and contained small, irregular, anechoic, cystic areas (n = 3 (60%)) and hyperechogenic foci (n = 5 (100%)). In the woman with a schwannoma in whom surgery was not performed, follow‐up over a 3‐year period showed minimal growth (1.5 mm/year) of the mass. We also summarize the findings of 47 cases of benign retroperitoneal schwannoma and neurofibroma identified in a literature search. Conclusions: On ultrasound examination, no imaging characteristics differentiate reliably between benign schwannomas and neurofibromas. Moreover, benign PNSTs show some similar features to malignant retroperitoneal tumors. They are solid lesions with intralesional blood vessels and show degenerative changes such as cystic areas and hyperechogenic foci. Therefore, ultrasound‐guided biopsy may play a pivotal role in their diagnosis. If confirmed to be benign PNSTs, these tumors can be managed conservatively, with ultrasound surveillance. © 2023 The Authors. Introduction: Retroperitoneal lymph node biopsy is a frequently required procedure in the study of neoplasms; it is desirable to optimize its performance with low morbidity. This paper describes the usefulness and complications of retroperitoneal lymph node biopsies by laparoscopy in a cancer institution in Latin America. Material and Methods: Retrospective cohort of patients with laparoscopic retroperitoneal or mesenteric lymph node biopsy between 2011 and 2021 at the National Cancer Institute, in Bogotá, Colombia. Demographic and surgical data, complications and 30-day mortality, histopathological results and their clinical role were collected. Results: 41 patients were included; 73% diagnosed with malignancy, mainly lymphoma. The indication was mostly suspected relapse, followed by suspected de novo hematologic disease. Adequate and sufficient tissue was always obtained for histological diagnosis. Five patients (12%) required conversion to laparotomy. There were no Clavien-Dindo III/IV complications or 30-day mortality. Grade I or II morbidity occurred in 3 cases (7%) and a grade III intraoperative incident. Conclusion: The invasive nature and diagnostic character of laparoscopic retroperitoneal biopsy constitute a frequent challenge in the practice of the general surgeon. Background: The accessory spleen is a congenital defect with an additional splenic tissue to the native spleen due to an incomplete fusion of splenic masses during the embryologic period. The preoperative diagnosis is usually mistaken for a retroperitoneal neoplasm. The aim of the present manuscript is to highlight the diagnostic difficulties of a retroperitoneal spleen. Case presentation: A 41-year-old woman was admitted to the surgical department of Habib Thameur Hospital, Tunis, for an abdominal mass discovered by auto palpation associated with a left lower quadrant pain. The computed tomographic scan showed a heterogeneous and partially necrotic retroperitoneal mass located along the left primitive iliac vessels . Arterial supply to the mass arose from the aorta and the left iliac vessel. The spleen was normal. MRI examination showed a left retroperitoneal heterogeneous and necrotic mass, surrounding the iliac vessels extended from the aortic to the left iliac bifurcation, hyper vascularized at the arterial time with a peripheral capsule intensely enhanced, and there were two other lateroaortic vascularized masses. The patient had a laparotomy resection of the retroperitoneal mass. The result of the specimen examination was an accessory spleen. The postoperative outcome was uneventful. Conclusion: An accessory spleen on the retroperitoneal position is extremely uncommon. Preoperative diagnosis is still challenging. The main misdiagnosis was neoplastic disease.

Objective: To analyze the clinical manifestation, imaging feature, treatment option and postoperative standardized management of the patient with retroperitoneal giant lymphangioma, and to improve the clinicians’ understanding of this disease. Methods: The clinical data of one patient with retroperitoneal giant lymphangioma were collected.The patients was diagnosed according to the patient’s specialist examination and imaging characteristics, and the selection of treatment measures and postoperative standardized management were analyzed. Results: The patient, a 33-year-old woman, was admitted to the hospital due to “abdominal distension for 2 months”. The specialist examination results showed the abdomen was slightly swelling, without other obvious abnormalities； the full abdominal percussion was mainly voiced, and the abdominal percussion changed into dulled drums at the midaxillary line, the mobile dullness was negative, the bowel sound was normal, and there were no water sound. There was a lump with the size of 17 cm×9 cm×26 cm which was soft, unclear boundary, inactive, feminine, negative for tenderness, the auscultation did not semell and vascular murmurs. The gynecological color ultrasound results showed that a large anedomic area was detected above the uterus reaching up to the lower part of the process, with a width of 18.6 cm, irregular morphology and with separations inside. The computed tomography（CT） results of the abdomen showed that the left renal pelvis and the upper segment of ureter expended, and the watery density opacity could be seen inside. The massive cystic mass can be seen in the abdominal cavity, about 17.9 cm×9.0 cm×26.7 cm, the cyst nodules shadow could be seen locally, with slight enhancement on the enhanced scan, the punctate calcification could be seen locally in the focus, and the other abnormalities were not found. The intraperitoneal cystic and space occupying in the abdominal cavity was considered, excluding the compression of the left ureter, secondary expansion and hydronephrosis of the left kidney and left upper segment of ureter. The abdminal neoplasm resection was performed, and the patient was diagnosed as retroperitoneal giant lymphangiome the surgical process was still smooth, and the postoperative standardized management was performed and the patient was discharged from the hospital. Conclusion: The clinical manifestations of retroperitoneal giant lymphangioma are poor. At present, the most valuable imaging diagonsis method of retroperitoneal giant lymphangioma is CT and magnetic resonance imaging （MRI), and surgical treatment is the preferred treatment measure. Schwannoma in retroperitoneal region is quite rare. In this report, we presented such a rare case of a large size schwannoma in a 23-year-old man admitted with a complaint of mild pain in his right lower abdomen. The abdominal ultrasonography detected a round-shaped heterogeneous hypoechoic mass with a few blood flow signals at the retroperitoneal area inferior to the right kidney. The contrast-enhanced ultrasound demonstrated a well-demarcated hypoechoic mass with minor vascularization. Computed tomography (CT) diagnosed the retroperitoneal mass as a malignant neoplasm. After surgical resection, histopathologic examination revealed that the mass was a benign cellular schwannoma. Besides the rare case of schwannoma in retroperitoneal region, we believe that multimodal sonographic patterns are conducive to the preoperative diagnosis of retroperitoneal neurilemmoma.

A 67‐year‐old man presented with lower limb weakness, palpitations, and insomnia. His urinary total metanephrine and normetanephrine levels were high. Computed tomography showed a 48 × 34‐mm oval mass on the dorsal side of the pancreas and portal vein between the aorta and vena cava. Because of the tumor location, we performed laparoscopic surgery using a retroperitoneal approach. We described a case of a patient with primary retroperitoneal paraganglioma between the aorta and vena cava who underwent retroperitoneoscopic resection. Introduction: Bronchogenic cyst is a congenital aberration of bronchopulmonary malformation with bronchial-type, pseudostratified cylindrical epithelium. They are usually discovered in the mediastinum and intrapulmonary but are rarely encountered in retroperitoneum. We report a case of the retroperitoneal bronchogenic cyst and perform a literature review to summarize the safety of laparoscopic resection for this rare disease. Case presentation: We report a 57-year-old woman who was admitted to our hospital with no clinical symptoms and was found by chance to have masses in the adrenal gland area during a routine physical examination. An abdominal CT examination revealed a cystic lesion was found in the left suprarenal region. Afterward, the patient underwent a laparoscopic exploration. Histopathological findings confirmed the diagnosis of a retroperitoneal bronchogenic cyst. The patient recovered uneventfully without signs of recurrence during a 1-year follow-up period. Conclusion: Bronchogenic cyst is rare in the retroperitoneal region. It should be considered as one of the differential diagnoses of a retroperitoneal neoplasm, especially in the left retroperitoneal region. Background: Retroperitoneal lymph node dissection (RPLND) is a treatment option for men with stage 1 or 2 testis cancer and the standard of care for men with postchemotherapy retroperitoneal residual disease. Given the morbidity of RPLND, four important surgical modifications have been proposed: minimally invasive access, nerve-sparing resection, template resection, and en-bloc resection. Objective: To describe the surgical steps and perioperative outcomes of robotic nerve-sparing unilateral template RPLND with en-bloc resection (roboRPLND-NS+). Design, setting, and participants: From 2017 to 2019, five patients with suspicion of retroperitoneal metastatic testicular cancer on abdominopelvic computed tomography underwent roboRPLND-NS+ at a single referral center. All surgeries were carried out by a single surgeon who has performed more than 500 extended and more than 50 super-extended robot-assisted lymph node dissections. Surgical procedure: A lateral transperitoneal robotic approach with a da Vinci Xi Surgical System (Intuitive Surgical, Sunnyvale, CA, USA) in six-arm configuration was used. The sympathetic chains, postganglionic sympathetic fibers, and hypogastric plexus were preserved as much as possible to ensure a nerve-sparing procedure. The template borders consisted of the renal vein cranially, the ureter laterally, the interaortocaval space medially, the common iliac artery caudally, and the psoas muscle dorsally for the right and left modified RPLND templates. Lymph nodes and the surrounding fatty tissue were progressively resected from the common iliac vessels and the abdominal aorta using the split-and-roll technique, and all of the template tissue was resected as a single specimen. Intraoperative and postoperative complications were recorded. Measurements: Lymph node yield and perioperative and postoperative oncological and functional outcomes were measured. Results and limitations: The median patient age was 38 yr (interquartile range [IQR] 32–41) and the median operative time was 274 min (IQR 238–280). Node metastases were pathologically confirmed in three patients. The median number of lymph nodes removed was 19 (IQR 18–21), and the median number of positive lymph nodes was 2 (IQR 1–3). No patient experienced intraoperative or postoperative complications. The postoperative hospital stay was either 3 or 4 d. Maintenance of antegrade ejaculation was achieved in all patients. After median follow-up of 15 mo (IQR 14–30), all patients were alive and no recurrence was observed. Limitations include the low number of patients and the single surgeon experience. Conclusions: RoboRPLND-NS+ is a safe and feasible technique that allows removal of a high number of lymph nodes with good functional outcomes. Short-term survival outcomes were excellent, with no recurrences or deaths recorded. Patient summary: We describe a feasible and safe robot-assisted surgical procedure for removal of lymph nodes in patients with testicular cancer. Our technique has potential to decrease the medical problems arising as side effects of the surgery while achieving good cancer control.

Abstract Background Bronchogenic cyst is congenital aberration of bronchopulmonary malformation, which is rarely encountered in the abdomen and retroperitoneum. Case presentation A 53-year-old female presented to outpatient clinic for a routine checkup of lumbar intervertebral disc herniation. She received a contrast computed tomography scan of the abdomen which revealed a retroperitoneal cystic lesion below the left crura of diaphragm. Afterward, the patient underwent a laparoscopic excision of the cystic lesion and was discharged uneventfully at postoperative day 4. Histopathological findings confirmed the diagnosis of retroperitoneal bronchogenic cyst. Our literature review identified 55 adult cases in recent two decades. The average age at diagnosis was 43.2 (range 17–69) years. 44 (80%) cases had a retroperitoneal cyst on the left side, and 52 (94.5%) cases underwent curative excision through open or laparoscopic surgery. In the available follow up of cases, there was no recurrence after surgery. Conclusions Bronchogenic cyst is rare in the retroperitoneal region. It should be considered as one of the differential diagnoses of a retroperitoneal neoplasm.

Background: There are few studies examining retroperitoneal lymph node dissection (RPLND) for testicular cancer in Australia. This study examines the perioperative outcomes, complications and survival rates following RPLND, by a high volume, single surgeon. Methods: A retrospective, case series of a single surgeon, multi‐centre study included all patients who underwent RPLND following testicular cancer at Westmead Public Hospital, Westmead Private Hospital, and Macquarie University Hospital 2005–2020. One hundred one patients identified, with 94 having sufficient available data. Results: At time of operation, median age was 29.5 years. 84.2% had T1 or T2 primary tumours at diagnosis. Most common RPLND indication was residual mass post‐chemotherapy (92.6%), with bleomycin, etoposide and cisplatin (BEP)x3 and BEPx4 most common chemotherapy regimens (50% and 35% respectively). Post‐chemotherapy, largest residual mass ranged from 0.9 to 20 cm (median 3.32 cm). Post‐chemotherapy, 95.7% masses were found in retroperitoneum (64.4% para‐aortic region). 93.6% had open approach. 42.5% had bilateral nerve sparing. Majority (97.1%) did not require blood transfusion. No complications reported in 52.1% of patients. No deaths recorded within 90 days of surgery. At time of analysis, 91.5% had recurrence free survival, and 92.6% overall survival, at a median follow‐up since surgery of 47.5 months (range 11 to 200 months). Conclusions: This retrospective study, addressing peri‐operative surgical outcomes for RPLND surgery in Australia, is comparable to high‐volume international urological centre studies, and shows that centralisation of post‐chemotherapy RPLND to an experienced surgeon, results in low perioperative morbidity and mortality. Endosalpingiosis is a condition that causes the non-neoplastic proliferation of ectopic tubal epithelium. Florid cystic endosalpingiosis is an atypical subtype that is very rarely reported. It presents as a mass-like feature and therefore needs to be differentiated from tumorous conditions. Here, we report the imaging findings of a case of multicentric florid cystic endosalpingiosis in the extraperitoneal pelvic cavity and the retroperitoneal spaces.

Abstract Background Hepatic metastasis of soft tissue sarcoma is rare compared to lung metastasis, and the literature is scarce. We examined the risk of hepatic metastasis according to the site of occurrence and histological type. Methods From a Hospital‐based Cancer Registry, 658 patients registered between 2007 and 2017 with soft tissue sarcomas were evaluated. The exclusion criteria were gastrointestinal stromal tumors, tumors of unknown origin, and follow‐up periods of less than 1 month. SPSS 25 was used for statistical analysis. Results The risk of hepatic metastasis was significantly higher in the retroperitoneum (HR, 5.981; 95% CI, 2.793‐12.808) and leiomyosarcoma (HR, 4.303; 95% CI, 1.782‐10.390). Multivariate analysis showed that the risk of hepatic metastasis as first distant metastasis was high in leiomyosarcoma (HR, 4.546; 95% CI, 2.275‐9.086) and retroperitoneal onset (HR, 4.588; 95% CI, 2.280‐9.231). The 2‐year survival rate after hepatic metastasis was 21.7%. Conclusions The onset of hepatic metastasis indicates a poor prognosis. However, hepatic metastasis from retroperitoneal sarcoma and leiomyosarcoma may be the first distant metastasis in some cases. For retroperitoneal sarcoma and leiomyosarcoma, additional screening for hepatic metastasis such as contrast CT should be considered during staging and follow‐up after treatment.

Introduction A double inferior vena cava is a rare anomaly with an incidence ranging from 0.3% to 3.0%. In patients with a double inferior vena cava, it is important to understand the precise anatomy and possible irregular lymph node flow when performing surgery for malignancies. Case presentation A 60‐year‐old man with a non‐seminoma was referred to our hospital after left high orchiectomy. Computed tomography revealed a double inferior vena cava and swollen masses in the para‐aortic region. After four cycles of chemotherapy with etoposide and cisplatin, retroperitoneal lymph node dissection was safely performed with a modified template extended to the right side of the paracaval region by referring to three‐dimensional images created by SYNAPSE VINCENT® software. Conclusion Preoperative three‐dimensional images were useful to understand this patient’s unusual and complicated anatomical positions.

• Extrathoracic SFTs are not common, our case is a rare pelvic localization of this disease. • The pre-operative diagnosis is difficult because clinical symptoms, physical examination and imaging are not diagnostic. • SFT should be considered in the differential diagnosis of any mesenchymal lesion arising from the gastrointestinal tract. Solitary fibrous tumors (SFTs) are rare spindle cells neoplasms most likely arising from mesenchymal cells. Usually they involve the pleura. Even if extra-thoracic SFTs are rare, lately they are diagnosed with increased frequency. We describe the case of giant pelvic and retroperitoneal neoplasm, a rare solitary fibrous tumor, in a 51-year-old man that was admitted for abdominal pain. On CT a SFT appears usually as a smooth, lobulated mass with occasional calcifications, but the imaging differential diagnosis with other mesenchymal tumors is very difficult, if not impossible. The histological and immune-histochemical features of SFTs are helpful for the differential diagnosis. The malignant potential of this cancer is low, but it is very important to perform an optimized surgery and a close follow up in the patient. Background: Hepatic metastasis of soft tissue sarcoma is rare compared to lung metastasis, and the literature is scarce. We examined the risk of hepatic metastasis according to the site of occurrence and histological type. Methods: From a Hospital‐based Cancer Registry, 658 patients registered between 2007 and 2017 with soft tissue sarcomas were evaluated. The exclusion criteria were gastrointestinal stromal tumors, tumors of unknown origin, and follow‐up periods of less than 1 month. SPSS 25 was used for statistical analysis. Results: The risk of hepatic metastasis was significantly higher in the retroperitoneum (HR, 5.981; 95% CI, 2.793‐12.808) and leiomyosarcoma (HR, 4.303; 95% CI, 1.782‐10.390). Multivariate analysis showed that the risk of hepatic metastasis as first distant metastasis was high in leiomyosarcoma (HR, 4.546; 95% CI, 2.275‐9.086) and retroperitoneal onset (HR, 4.588; 95% CI, 2.280‐9.231). The 2‐year survival rate after hepatic metastasis was 21.7%. Conclusions: The onset of hepatic metastasis indicates a poor prognosis. However, hepatic metastasis from retroperitoneal sarcoma and leiomyosarcoma may be the first distant metastasis in some cases. For retroperitoneal sarcoma and leiomyosarcoma, additional screening for hepatic metastasis such as contrast CT should be considered during staging and follow‐up after treatment. We present a case of a 51-year-old woman referred to our department for unspecific abdominal pain. Two hypoechoic focal lesions in the retroperitoneal space and one hypoechoic mass superficially located in the mesogastrium were found at ultrasound (US) examination. All three masses were characterized as malignant by using contrast enhanced ultrasound (CEUS), due to the rapid hyperenhancement pattern followed by rapid wash-out. Laparoscopic biopsies revealed the final positive diagnosis of Burkitt lymphoma and hematologic treatment was immediately initiated. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

We present here a 32-year-old male with advanced lately diagnosed, right sided retroperitoneal mass, which had been already treated due to progressive muco-cutaneous lesions clinically consistent with psoriasis, during recent four years. The advanced retroperitoneal mass resected surgically and reported as hyaline-vascular castleman disease with a dense focus of coarse calcification, on histopathology. Association of psoriasis and castlman disease is discussed in this case report.

Schwannomas are benign neurogenic soft tissue tumors arising from the Schwann cells which are sheath cells of peripheral nerves. Retroperitoneal schwannomas are very rare. The are not usually recognized until they cause symptoms from mass effect, and thus, they may reach very large size. In this paper, we report a 60-year-old female patient who was admitted to our hospital with a complaint of abdominal discomfort. Preoperative computed tomography of the abdomen detected a giant retroperitoneal mass. The tumor was totally resected with a pre-diagnosis of retroperitoneal schwannoma based on computed tomography findings without using additional imaging methods or biopsy. The patient was discharged without any complication on the 4th postoperative day. Correlative findings of preoperative radiological and postoperative histopathological examinations of retroperitoneal schwannoma are discussed in detail.

Liposarcoma is the most common pathology seen in the soft tissue sarcoma of retroperitoneum. These tumors have been traditionally treated with radical surgery sacrificing adjacent organs to achieve clear margins. We have reported our experience of renal sparing surgery for perirenal liposarcoma in two patients with more than 24 month disease free survival.

Primary retroperitoneal mucinous cystic tumors with borderline malignancy are rarely encountered. To date, only 12 cases have been reported in the literature. In this report, we present an additional case. A 65-year-old nulliparous woman complained of abdominal fullness. Her medical history included a hysterectomy and a single salpingo-oophorectomy performed 25 years prior to the present event. Physical examination revealed a large cystic mass in the abdomen and pelvis. During laparotomy, a cystic tumor measuring 21×14 cm in size was observed in the left retroperitoneal space. The tumor was resected, and the final diagnosis was primary retroperitoneal mucinous cystic cancer with borderline malignancy.
