This document describes the data collection and aggregation methodology used in ICT4CART, together with a summary of the state of the art on tools needed for data acquisition, validation, transmission, database structure and storage. The developed methodology is impacted by the other tasks of WP7, where the test site requirements and deployments are specified, as well as the task T8.1 “Evaluation Methodology and Plan”. The test sites have provided their own data specifications of the collected data in each use case. The data collection and aggregation methodology is described in the Section 2, and defines a common process that should be used by all the test sites and for each use case to produce required data with the right quality for the evaluation tasks in WP8. This deliverable presents insights into collected data with focus on the WP8 requirements and specificities per test site. In addition, the document explains the data management methodology and procedures, and defines the features of the centralised data management in ICT4CART which enables the storage and sharing of collected data across the consortium partners. The current deliverable is a public document and provides a complete picture of the data management methodology developed the task T7.7 “Data Collection and Aggregation” in ICT4CART. In this task, the involved partners have developed a common methodology for data acquisition and centralised data management, which is tailored to the needs of collection of semi-structured data formats that may significantly vary from a test site to a test site. All collected data are stored in a centralised data management system. The design and architecture of such a system are explained in Section 5 of this document, which provides a deep understanding of the interfaces provided to the evaluators and to the test sites to collect data.

Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is a common and highly heritable neurodevelopmental disorder with poorly understood pathophysiology and genetic mechanisms. A balanced chromosomal translocation interrupts CTNND2 in several members of a family with profound attentional deficit and myopia, and disruption of the gene was found in a separate unrelated individual with ADHD and myopia. CTNND2 encodes a brain-specific member of the adherens junction complex essential for postsynaptic and dendritic development, a site of potential pathophysiology in attentional disorders. Therefore, we propose that the severe and highly penetrant nature of the ADHD phenotype in affected individuals identifies CTNND2 as a potential gateway to ADHD pathophysiology similar to the DISC1 translocation in psychosis or AUTS2 in autism.

Species capable of regenerating lost body parts occur throughout the animal kingdom, yet close relatives are often regeneration incompetent. Why in the face of 'survival of the fittest' some animals regenerate but others do not remains a fascinating question. Planarian flatworms are well known and studied for their ability to regenerate from minute tissue pieces, yet species with limited regeneration abilities have been described even amongst planarians. Here we report the characterization of the regeneration defect in the planarian Dendrocoelum lacteum and its successful rescue. Tissue fragments cut from the posterior half of the body of this species are unable to regenerate a head and ultimately die. We find that this defect originates during the early stages of head specification, which require inhibition of canonical Wnt signalling in other planarian species. Notably, RNA interference (RNAi)-mediated knockdown of Dlac-β-catenin-1, the Wnt signal transducer, restored the regeneration of fully functional heads on tail pieces, rescuing D. lacteum's regeneration defect. Our results demonstrate the utility of comparative studies towards the reactivation of regenerative abilities in regeneration-deficient animals. Furthermore, the availability of D. lacteum as a regeneration-impaired planarian model species provides a first step towards elucidating the evolutionary mechanisms that ultimately determine why some animals regenerate and others do not.

Im Zuge des sechsstreifigen Ausbaus der BAB A 6 Mannheim–Saarbrucken muss die unter Denkmalschutz stehende Waschmuhltalbrucke instandgesetzt und verbreitert werden. Dabei soll neben der historischen Sandsteinbogenbrucke ein neues Bauwerk errichtet werden. Aufgrund der besonderen Situation und der gestalterischen Bedeutung der von Paul Bonatz entworfenen Waschmuhltalbrucke, wurde ein Einladungswettbewerb zur Gestaltung der neuen Brucke ausgelobt. Uber die Ergebnisse des Wettbewerbes und den Entwurf der neuen Brucke wird in diesem Aufsatz berichtet. New building of the Waschmuhl Viaduct – Harmonically symbiosis historical building/new building. In the course of the expansion of the federal motorway A 6 between Mannheim and Saarbrucken up to six lanes the existing Waschmuhl Viaduct, classified as historic monument, has to be refurbished and widened. Therefore a new bridge shall be built next to the historic sandstone arch bridge. Due to this specific situation and the artistically importance of the Waschmuhl Viaduct designed by Paul Bonatz, a design competition for the new bridge has been organized. This article reports on the results of the competition and the final design of the new bridge.

The Gimballed Limb Observer for Radiance Imaging of the Atmosphere (GLORIA), a Fourier-transform-spectrometer-based limb spectral imager, operates on high-altitude research aircraft to study the transit region between the troposphere and the stratosphere. It is one of the most sophisticated systems to be flown on research aircraft in Europe, requiring constant monitoring and human intervention in addition to an automation system. To ensure proper functionality and interoperability on multiple platforms, a flexible control and communication system was laid out. The architectures of the communication system as well as the protocols used are reviewed. The integration of this architecture in the automation process as well as the scientific campaign flight application context are discussed.

The technique of subcutaneous rod insertion without exposure of the curve has been proposed as a method of controlling the progression of scoliosis while allowing the spine to grow. We review the literature and present three patients whose spines spontaneously fused unexpectedly while undergoing this form of treatment. The fusion occurred posteriorly, and continued anterior growth led to increased deformity from the crankshaft phenomenon. Based on this experience, the authors recommend careful follow-up and early anterior fusion when the crankshaft phenomenon is observed

Within the scope of the FP7 project ICT-ENSURE, two complementary web-based information systems on research in Europe in the field of ICT for environmental sustainability have been developed: The ICT-ENSURE Research Programmes Information System that serves as an information source on national research programmes and projects in the European Union in the field of ICT for environmental sustainability, and the ICT-ENSURE Literature Information System which provides scientific literature on this field to the scientific community and other interested people. In this chapter, the goal, contents, functionality, and mutual interaction of the information systems are described. Furthermore, the tools for contents acquisition, the maintenance and quality assurance of the contents, as well as data privacy aspects are addressed.

Hypophosphatasia results from mutations in the gene for the tissue-nonspecific isozyme of alkaline phosphatase (TNSALP). Inorganic pyrophosphate accumulates extracellularly, leading to rickets or osteomalacia. Severely affected babies often die from respiratory insufficiency due to progressive chest deformity or have persistent bone disease. There is no approved medical therapy. ENB-0040 is a bone-targeted, recombinant human TNSALP that prevents the manifestations of hypophosphatasia in Tnsalp knockout mice.We enrolled infants and young children with life-threatening or debilitating perinatal or infantile hypophosphatasia in a multinational, open-label study of treatment with ENB-0040. The primary objective was the healing of rickets, as assessed by means of radiographic scales. Motor and cognitive development, respiratory function, and safety were evaluated, as well as the pharmacokinetics and pharmacodynamics of ENB-0040.Of the 11 patients recruited, 10 completed 6 months of therapy; 9 completed 1 year. Healing of rickets at 6 months in 9 patients was accompanied by improvement in developmental milestones and pulmonary function. Elevated plasma levels of the TNSALP substrates inorganic pyrophosphate and pyridoxal 5'-phosphate diminished. Increases in serum parathyroid hormone accompanied skeletal healing, often necessitating dietary calcium supplementation. There was no evidence of hypocalcemia, ectopic calcification, or definite drug-related serious adverse events. Low titers of anti-ENB-0040 antibodies developed in four patients, with no evident clinical, biochemical, or autoimmune abnormalities at 48 weeks of treatment.ENB-0040, an enzyme-replacement therapy, was associated with improved findings on skeletal radiographs and improved pulmonary and physical function in infants and young children with life-threatening hypophosphatasia.
