3. Exercise accessibility for people with blindness and visual impairments : assessing the potential of tongue interfaces

Abstract

Regularly participating in sport and exercise is extremely good for health and well-being. However, for people with blindness and visual impairments, access to exercise is restricted compared to others. One promising method for increasing access to exercise is the applied use of novel technological interventions. Specifically, the field of sensory substitution may be able to provide suitable visual assistance for sport and exercise, although sensory substitution devices have not yet been explored for this purpose. The BrainPort is a vision-into-tactile sensory substitution device that converts visual information into electrotactile stimulation on the surface of the tongue and is a popular device in substitution research. Among sensory substitution devices, the BrainPort is perhaps a compelling choice as a visual aid for exercise as it has a good spatial and temporal resolution, and is a stand-alone unit, with a camera mounted on the forehead and integrated processing unit at the back. Yet surprisingly little is known about the tactile capabilities of the tongue and whether people can successfully interpret the kinds of information required for performing sport and exercise through it. This thesis uses psychophysical methods to explore the potential of tongue interfaces, such as the BrainPort, for the purpose of exercise, and additionally, probes aspects of exercise accessibility for people with visual impairments. It finds that tongue interfaces do have a potential for improving access to exercise for people with visual impairments if careful considerations are made. Primarily, the tongue has a limited ability to orientate attention on its surface, therefore, it is easy to overload with tactile information. Furthermore, the findings show that people with visual impairments are willing and able to adopt new technology to aid them in exercise habits and routines. Finally, based on these findings, the thesis proposes the development of a novel artificially intelligent sensory substitution software, designed to aid navigation in rock climbers with visual impairments by directing spatial attention to climbing hold locations, via a tongue interface.

Abstract

The landscape of digital games is segregated by player ability. For example, sighted players have a multitude of highly visual games at their disposal, while blind players may choose from a variety of audio games. Attempts at improving cross-ability access to any of those are often limited in the experience they provide, or disregard multiplayer experiences. We explore ability-based asymmetric roles as a design approach to create engaging and challenging mixed-ability play. Our team designed and developed two collaborative testbed games exploring asymmetric interdependent roles. In a remote study with 13 mixed-visual-ability pairs we assessed how roles affected perceptions of engagement, competence, and autonomy, using a mixed-methods approach. The games provided an engaging and challenging experience, in which differences in visual ability were not limiting. Our results underline how experiences unequal by design can give rise to an equitable joint experience., Comment: 21 pages, 1 figure. Abstract

Healthcare practitioners (HCP) have expressed inadequate preparation in providing care to patients living with a dementia. Research suggests experiential learning activities (ELAs) can improve HCP knowledge and comfort toward this population. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the impact of a short-duration (2-hour) dementia ELA on Doctor of Physical Therapy (DPT) students' knowledge and comfort toward individuals living with a dementia. Participants included a sample of first-year DPT students (n=82). In this pre-experimental, single-site, longitudinal study, students participated in an ELA at a memory care facility. They completed a dementia knowledge and comfort survey pre-(T1) and post-ELA(T2), as well as prior to their first clinical experience (nine months post-ELA; T3). Pre- and post-survey analysis demonstrated significant improvements between T1 to T2 and T1 to T3 with overall effect sizes ranging from very large (d=1.256) to huge (d=1.520). There were no significant differences between T2 to T3 analysis. Students demonstrated positive improvements in attitudes toward individuals living with a dementia following this ELA. Improvements were maintained over time. An ELA as short as two hours may improve person-centered care for patients living with a dementia. Abstract

The present study investigates the relation between the reading process and text comprehension during naturalistictext reading. To that end, participants read easy and difficult texts while their eye movements were recorded. After eachreading, participants filled-in comprehension questionnaires. We investigated classical measures of the reading process relatedto comprehension (fixation duration, regressive eye movements), as well as power-law scaling in eye movements that areindicative of degree of cognitive coordination during reading. The results show that text difficulty led to longer fixation durationsand stronger power-law scaling in eye movements. Moreover, the degree of power-law scaling in eye movements was predictiveof text comprehension. In line with previous research on natural text reading that utilized the self-paced reading method, powerlawscaling turned out to be a superior predictor of reading comprehension compared to standard measures, suggesting that itis an effective measure of cognitive performance in complex reading tasks

Abstract

High‐yielding mechanized rice production requires large amounts of nitrogen (N) fertilizer, which can be particularly costly to producers when applied in excess. The development of a tissue test to detect overapplication of N to rice is needed. Nitrogen response trials arranged in a randomized complete block design were established to identify a critical concentration threshold for a tissue test to detect excess N availability. Rice stalk samples were collected from 0 to 20 cm above the soil within 5 days of harvest and analyzed for NO3−‐N concentration. Two models were fit to the data to represent rice grain yield as a function of N concentration: the linear plateau model and the quadratic plateau model. The data were well represented by both models; however, the linear plateau model more accurately described the data with a normalized root mean square error of 0.128 for linear plateau and 0.131 for quadratic plateau and a significant F‐test (p < 0.0001). The join point of the linear response region and the plateau region of the model serves as a critical value that separates the responsive (N deficient) and non‐responsive (N optimum or excessive) regions. The 95% confidence interval of the join point (2.1 mg NO3−‐N kg−1) was selected as a practical, agronomic critical concentration threshold to reduce false positive errors. The data presented here further supports the use of a post‐season tissue test in rice to detect overfertilization and establish a critical concentration threshold for this tissue test. Core Ideas: The linear plateau model was a better predictor of nitrogen (N) management than the quadratic plateau model.Post‐season NO3−‐N tissue concentrations provide information about N availability during the growing season.A critical value of 2.1 mg NO3−‐N kg‐1 can accurately differentiate between sufficient and yield‐limiting N conditions.This research supports a tissue test to diagnose overfertilization and inform N management decisions in rice. Abstract

People with blindness and visual impairments have reduced access to exercise compared to the general population during typical societal functioning. The Coronavirus-19 pandemic completely disrupted daily life for most individuals worldwide, and in the United Kingdom, a stay-at-home order was enforced. One of the sole reasons an individual could leave their home was for the purpose of daily exercise. Here, we examined how the UK national lockdown impacted access to exercise for people with blindness and visual impairment. We used a mixed methods design, collecting quantitative data from two established measures (the Exercise Barriers and Benefits Scale and the International Physical Activity Questionnaire), and qualitative data from open-ended questions. We found that, during the initial stages of the lockdown, perceived barriers to exercise increased compared to pre-pandemic levels, driven by factors, such as the closure of exercise facilities and additional difficulties posed by social distancing. Interestingly, during the later stages of the UK Coronavirus-19 response, perceived barriers decreased to lower than pre-pandemic levels. Thematic analysis indicated that this may have been due to participants finding new online methods to exercise at home, in combination with the tentative reopening of facilities.
