Abstract

Libraries in universities that teach online or distance degrees face the difficulty of facilitating access to their students to the recommended bibliography of the subjects. This problem spread to all universities during the Covid-19 pandemic. The most obvious solution is to acquire that bibliography in digital format. Documents included in the syllabi of the Online Degree in Library and Information Science of the University of León, the only one taught in Spain in this modality, are analyzed in this paper to know what percentage of the monographs is available in digital format, through library loan licenses or open access. Given the low percentage obtained, which does not reach a third of the monographs and is considered clearly insufficient, we reflect on the reasons, proposing measures that libraries and teachers can carry out, and we state the necessary digitization of the monographs.

Abstract

he paper analyzes the evolution of the use of electronic scientific journals in the period between 2007 and 2018 by the academic communities of to the BUCLE Consortium (Spain). 10. Millennial Researchers in a Metric-Driven Scholarly World: An International Study

Abstract

The study investigates the attitudes and practices of early career researchers (ECRs) in regard to citation-based metrics and altmetrics, providing the findings in the light of what might be expected of the millennial generation and in the context of what we already know about researchers in today's 'culture of counting' governed scholarly world. The data were gathered by means of an international survey, informed by a preceding, 3-year qualitative study of 120 ECRs from 7 countries, which obtained 1,600 responses. The main conclusions are: (1) citation indicators play a central and multi-purpose role in scholarly communications; (2) altmetrics are not so popular or widely used, but ECRs are waking up to some of their merits, most notably, discovering the extent to which their papers obtain traction and monitoring impact; (3) there is a strong likelihood that ECRs are going to have to grapple with both citation-based metrics and altmetrics, mainly in order to demonstrate research impact; and (4) the Chinese are the most metric using nation, largely because of governmental regulations.

This article presents the survey to locate the portals and repositories that contain primary research data in Argentina. For this purpose, directories and repositories records, both for data and publications, the repositories included in the Sistema Nacional de Repositorios Digitales, and those harvested by the Sistema de Información Universitaria del Consejo Interuniversitario Nacional in its SIU-BDU 2 service were consulted. Besides, Google search engine and documentary sources on the subject were used. We found 25 repositories containing data and we analyzed some general their characteristics.

Abstract

This paper comes from the third stage (H‐3) of the long‐running Harbingers of Change project (2015), which has investigated the scholarly communication beliefs and practices of early career researchers (ECRs) for a decade. The first stage (H‐1) focussed on generational (Millennial) change; the second (H‐2) on the impact of COVID; and, currently, the third stage (H‐3) on AI and its impact. While each stage has a particular focus all stages also asked questions about wider scholarly communications. This paper re‐examines an important finding found in H‐1 and backed by H‐2, which was that ECRs thought article processing charges were a major barrier to publishing open access (OA). Since then, OA has become more complex with more models available and a huge body of OA journals to navigate, so it is time to return to the topic. Data were obtained from China, France, Malaysia, Poland, Portugal and Spain about national guidelines and practices with 62 ECRs interviewed in‐depth. The findings indicate that ECRs are encountering challenges, or dilemmas in OA publishing. Abstract

During the COVID pandemic, some commentators thought that early career researchers (ECRs) would become a 'lost generation'. Yet the Harbingers (H‐2) longitudinal study, which followed ECRs for 2 years during the pandemic found that ECRs took things in their stride. More than 2 years on, we returned, as part of the AI stage of the Harbingers study (H‐3), to see what has transpired and interviewed nearly 70 ECRs from six countries as part of an exploratory study. We found that: (1) only one in six ECRS thought they were suffering from the residual impacts of the pandemic, with increased workload creating the greatest stress; (2) working remotely, digitally and more flexibly was thought by many to be the biggest dividend delivered, making the job more desirable and competitive; (3) an apparent growth in jobs and promotions (tenures) confirmed the bounce‐back. Given the modest size of the study, analysis by country has to be undertaken with caution, but China, where political and economic factors have stifled any bounce‐back, stands out for special attention in a future full‐blown study. Finally, the study yielded informed and considered views that the long‐term impact of the pandemic appears to be beneficial rather than disadvantageous. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

The Harbingers study of early career researchers (ECRs), their work life and scholarly communications, began by studying generational—Millennial—change (c.2016), then moved to pandemic change (c.2020) and is now investigating another potential agent of change: artificial intelligence (2024–). We report here on a substantial scoping pilot study that looks at the impact of AI on the scholarly communications of international ECRs and, extends this to the arts and humanities. It aims to fill the knowledge gap concerning ECRs whose millennial mindset may render them especially open to change and, as the research workhorses they are, very much in the frontline. The data was collected via in‐depth interviews in China, Malaysia, Poland, Portugal, Spain and (selectively) the United Kingdom/United States. The data show ECRs to be thinking, probing and, in some cases, experimenting with AI. There was a general acceptance that AI will be responsible for the growth of low‐quality scientific papers, which could lead to a decline in the quality of research. Scholarly integrity and ethics were a big concern with issues of authenticity, plagiarism, copyright and poor citation practices raised. Abstract

This extensive literature review is not a stand‐alone paper, as it was conducted to help set the scene for the third and current stage of the Harbinger of Change project (H‐3), which is focusing on the impact of artificial intelligence (AI) on early career researchers (ECRs). Its purpose is to inform the design, scope and question‐forming of the ongoing interview project (2024–). The overarching aim of the review is to establish what we know of the already extant and/or predicted opportunities and challenges that AI‐driven technologies present to researchers, in general, and the cohort of junior researchers among them, in particular. It was found that very little empirical evidence exists of what is happening to ECRs on the ground, and that tends to be drowned in a sea of forecasts and prognostications. However, down the road there are clear benefits accruing to ECRs and, arguably, the most appealing for novice researchers must be the benefits of enhancing their productivity, the key to all scholarly rewards, inclusive of career advancement. Abstract

This article aims to analyze the scientific production of the teaching and research staff of the University of Salamanca during the period 2010-2015. Based on two sets of data that contain this production and the bibliographic references cited in it, the following indicators were determined: a) the most productive areas of knowledge, b) the types of documents chosen to disseminate the research, c) the type of access that present; and d) the types of documents used as bibliographic references, their obsolescence, and their type of access. A quantitative methodology with a cross-sectional design was used, using descriptive statistics to generate and analyze the results. It is concluded that the most productive areas of knowledge were Physical Sciences and Health Sciences, and working in collaboration, Health Sciences with Life Sciences. The predominant document type is the scientific article, followed by conference communications. Most of these publications are in restricted access. The scientific article also takes precedence in bibliographic references, followed by books and book chapters. These cited references have a half-life between 6 and 9 years. Closed access predominates, and green open access predominates among the open access modalities. Sobre la base de dos conjuntos de datos que contienen esta producción y las referencias bibliográficas citadas en ella, se determinaron los siguientes indicadores: a) las áreas de conocimiento más productivas, b) los tipos documentales escogidos para divulgar la investigación; c) el tipo de acceso que presentan, y d) los tipos documentales empleados como referencias bibliográficas, su obsolescencia y su tipo de acceso. Se recurrió a una metodología cuantitativa, con un diseño transversal, empleando la estadística descriptiva para generar y analizar los resultados. Se concluye que las áreas de conocimiento más productivas fueron las Ciencias Físicas y las Ciencias de la Salud; y trabajando en colaboración, las Ciencias de la Salud con las Ciencias de la Vida. El tipo documental predominante es el artículo científico, seguido por las comunicaciones a congresos. La mayor parte de estas publicaciones están en acceso restringido. En las referencias bibliográficas, prima asimismo el artículo científico, seguido por los libros y los capítulos de libros. Estas referencias citadas tienen una vida media comprendida entre 6 y 9 años. Predomina el acceso cerrado y, entre las modalidades de acceso abierto, la vía verde. Abstract

This is a study of the behavior, preferences and level of satisfaction of the academic communities of the Universities of Coimbra, Porto and Leon in relation to the use of electronic journals.With this aim, data and opinions from faculty undertaking research in differents fields of knowledge were gathered during surveys carried out in 2012. Frequent, intense use was noted, this being fundamentally directed towards research tasks. The average number of articles consulted per year was considerable, with clear differences being visible between the fields of Humanities, Social Sciences and Life and Health Sciences. The number of journal titles consulted regularly by faculty was found to be an average of almost ten, results that exceed the threshold found in other works

Abstract

This study measured the international visibility of the ULE research output and the importance of the journals in which ULE researchers published their work, based on the references indexed in international databases (Scopus, WoS, Academic Search, Biosis, Biological Abstracts, PubMed, Francis and FSTA), from 1998 to 2006. The total production between 1998-2006 was 2,317 documents (2,005 articles and 108 conference papers). ULE's research in science and technology is more represented in databases than social sciences and humanities. An increasing presence of ULE research in international databases is observed. High collaboration level among authors (groups of 4 - 5), but mainly internal within ULE (69.49%). More than 75% of the articles have been referenced in JCR (WoS) or SJR (Scopus). The coverage of journals in which ULE researchers published is higher in Scopus, but WoS indexed more papers.

Abstract

The profitability of electronic information involves relationship between quantity and quality of content supply, use and cost made. Global unloading data and unloading data by titles of journals distributed by Emerald at the University Leon, between the years 2005-2009, are studied. Based on the overall usage statistics during this period, we analyze the consumption trends, concentration and dispersion. Moreover, identifying the most downloaded titles, they are compared to the subscriptions that have shaped the paper collection of ULE and explore their reputation or Impact Factor. An evaluation of the efficiency and profitability of the investment relating the use of content and the price of the package is made.

Abstract

Survey of the group of high-impact scientific Spanish journals about History, Art, Philology and Geography, so as to provide researchers with sources where to publish and get coverage and visibility for their studies among the scientific community. The journals’ sample, which is the review’s focus, has been extracted from the five lists of the most important periodic Spanish publications according to two criteria: its impact index must be above 0 and their presence in the five lists. The first aspect to be analyzed is the presence of this group of journals in ISI’s database from two points of view: indexed journals by the ISI and journals comprised in the Journal Citation Reports. The second factor is the occurrence or not of these journals in specific and relevant directories and their occurrence in national and international databases, considered by the ANECA as a quality reference in their subjects. Besides, full-text journals’ presence is assessed in Dialnet and other open access platforms. The advantages of open access for scientific progress and for democratization of scientific literature will be articulated.

Abstract

The current subscription of e-books in libraries of the public Spanish universities is studied. The analysis is focused on the offered contents, the functionalities of platforms and the user interaction facilities. It can be noted that 36 of the 50 existing universities support the subscription of at least one collection of electronic books. The universities of the communities of Andalusia, Catalonia and Valencia are those that have reached a greater implementation of this product. It is an emerging sector that needs a progressive acceptance on the part of the scientific community. We consider that e-books will have a significant role in the new model of education supported by the European Higher Education Area.

Abstract

The main objective of this work is to analyze the labels assigned to the photographic documents in a specific commercial agency, Agefotostock, in order to know in what aspects they affect and what are the most common characteristics of these free descriptors. Among the nine thematic categories offered, the so-called People was chosen, since it was inferred a priori that it would be the one that could focus more on the same photograph. Finally, it was decided to select, within the aforementioned category, the first 100 photos recovered in the last fortnight of April 2019 ordered according to their popularity, which assured us to have a sufficiently large sample. The study of the sample was approached taking the following elements of analysis: number of labels assigned by photography; type and morphology of the terms; number of terms per label; percentage of content labels versus format tags or techniques; percentage of denotative and connotative labels, coincidence of labels and synonymy.

Several profiles of female researchers are identified. Abstract

Libraries in universities that teach online or distance degrees face the difficulty of facilitating access to their students to the recommended bibliography of the subjects. This problem has spread to all universities during the Covid-19 pandemic. The most obvious solution is to acquire that bibliography in digital format. Documents included in the syllabi of the Online Degree in Library and Information Science of the University of León, the only one taught in Spain in this modality, are analyzed in this paper to know what percentage of the monographs is available in digital format, through library loan licenses or open access. Given the low percentage obtained, which does not reach a third of the monographs and is considered clearly insufficient, we reflect on the reasons, proposing measures that libraries and teachers can carry out, and we state the necessary digitization of the monographs., Las bibliotecas de universidades que imparten titulaciones online o a distancia se enfrentan a la dificultad de facilitar a sus alumnos el acceso a la bibliografía recomendada de las asignaturas. Este problema se ha extendido a todas las universidades durante la pandemia de Covid-19. La solución más evidente consiste en dar acceso a esa bibliografía en formato digital.  En el presente trabajo se analiza la bibliografía recomendada en el Grado en Información y Documentación online de la Universidad de León, el único que se imparte en esta modalidad en España, para conocer qué porcentaje de las monografías está disponible en formato digital, a través de licencias de préstamo en bibliotecas o en acceso abierto. Ante el bajo porcentaje obtenido, que no alcanza la tercera parte de las monografías y que resulta insuficiente, se reflexiona sobre las razones, se proponen medidas que pueden llevar a cabo las bibliotecas y el profesorado y se apunta la necesaria digitalización de las monografías.

Abstract

Transparency and access to information on research projects in Spanish public universities. In the framework of Spain’s Transparency Act of 2013, an analysis is conducted of the information on research projects headed or participated in by Spanish public university teaching staff and funded by public institutions and bodies. The aims are to ascertain whether this information is associated with and published on transparency portals and to determine its typology and characteristics. The analysis covers portals and websites, access points and the type of information furnished. Although universities comply with the transparency obligations laid down in the act, the information on research projects freely available is not individualised and only rarely matched to results (such as articles, patents or conference communications), particulars that would not only encourage knowledge sharing, but enhance the credibility of and trust in research funding.

Abstract

The Degree in Library Science and Documentation of the University of León started during the 1990- 1991 academic year. This first curriculum suffered from a large presence of humanistic subjects and a low rate of experimentation granted to many subjects, caused by the integration within the Faculty of Philosophy and Letters. In the first courses, there were a high number of students. Subsequently, the decrease in the number of students in our degree caused us to initiate the change to the blended and online modalities. The Librarianship and Documentation Area of the University of León (ULe) already has a long experience in blended teaching, firstly, with the Degree in Librarianship and Documentation since the 2006/2007 academic year, using the platform aul@unileon. Currently, with the Degree of Information and Documentation in the modality blended since the 2010/2011 academic year, and in distance mode, since the 2014/2015 academic year. The new technologies have been fully introduced in university education and have facilitated the teaching-learning process through the use of interactive programs from the Internet. The main objective of this communication is to know and study what kind of multimedia tools were used by the professors of the Bachelor of Information and Documentation at the University of León in the teaching-learning process and in virtual teaching before the Covid-19; and on the other hand, observe what new tools have been introduced by the University for this reason.We will study student-teacher and student-student interaction to help promote communication and participatory learning through chat, forum, email, hangout, Skype, Meet, videoconferences, etc. In order to carry out this study, two types of methodologies will be implemented: the satisfaction surveys hosted in the Quality Office of the ULe will be studied to know the degree of satisfaction shown by students and teachers; second, the study of the annual memories., Bobcatsss, Bobcatsss 2021: Digital Transformation
