Some of the synthesis methods and physical properties of iron-oxide based magnetic nanoparticles such as Fe3-xO4 and CoxFe3-xO4 are reviewed because of their interest in health, environmental applications, and ultra-high-density magnetic recording. Unlike high crystalline quality nanoparticles larger than a few nanometers that show bulk-like magnetic and electronic properties, nanostructures with increasing structural defects yield a progressive worsening of their general performance due to frozen magnetic disorder and local breaking of their crystalline symmetry. Thus, it is shown that single-crystal, monophasic nanoparticles do not exhibit significant surface or finite-size effects, such as spin canting, reduced saturation magnetization, high closure magnetic fields, hysteresis-loop shift or dead magnetic layer features which are mostly associated with crystallographic defective systems. Besides, the key role of the nanoparticle coating, surface anisotropy, and inter-particle interactions are discussed. Finally, the results of some single particle techniques -- magnetic force microscopy, X-ray photoemission electron microscopy, and electron magnetic chiral dichroism -- that allow studying individual nanoparticles down to sub-nanometer resolution with element, valence and magnetic selectivity, are presented. All in all, the intimate, fundamental correlation of the nanostructure (crystalline, chemical, magnetic) to the physical properties of the nanoparticles is ascertained.

Inspired by geometrically frustrated magnetic systems, we present the optical response of three cases of hexagonal lattices of plasmonic nanoelements. All of them were designed using a metal-insulator-metal configuration to enhance absorption of light, with elements in close proximity to exploit near-field coupling, and with triangular symmetry to induce frustration of the dipolar polarization in the gaps between neighboring structures. Both simulations and experimental results demonstrate that these systems behave as perfect absorbers in the visible and/or the near infrared. Besides, the numerical study of the time evolution shows that they exhibit a relatively extended time response over which the system fluctuates between localized and collective modes. It is of particular interest the echoed excitation of surface lattice resonance modes, which are still present at long times because of the geometric frustration inherent to the triangular lattice. It is worth noting that the excitation of collective modes is also enhanced in other types of arrays where dipolar excitations of the nanoelements are hampered by the symmetry of the array. However, we would like to emphasize that the enhancement in triangular arrays can be significantly larger because of the inherent geometric incompatibility of dipolar excitations and three-fold symmetry axes.

We present a system consisting of two stacked chiral plasmonic nanoelements, so-called triskelia, that exhibits a high degree of circular dichroism. The optical modes arising from the interactions between the two elements are the main responsible for the dichroic signal. Their excitation in the absorption cross section is favored when the circular polarization of the light is opposite to the helicity of the system, so that an intense near-field distribution with 3D character is excited between the two triskelia, which in turn causes the dichroic response. Therefore, the stacking, in itself, provides a simple way to tune both the value of the circular dichroism, up to 60%, and its spectral distribution in the visible and near infrared range. We show how these interaction-driven modes can be controlled by finely tuning the distance and the relative twist angle between the triskelia, yielding maximum values of the dichroism at 20{\deg} and 100{\deg} for left- and right-handed circularly polarized light, respectively. Despite the three-fold symmetry of the elements, these two situations are not completely equivalent since the interplay between the handedness of the stack and the chirality of each single element breaks the symmetry between clockwise and anticlockwise rotation angles around 0{\deg}. This reveals the occurrence of clear helicity-dependent resonances. The proposed structure can be thus finely tuned to tailor the dichroic signal for applications at will, such as highly efficient helicity-sensitive surface spectroscopies or single-photon polarization detectors, among others.

Plasmonic lattice nanostructures are of technological interest because of their capacity to manipulate light below the diffraction limit. Here, we present a detailed study of dark and bright modes in the visible and near-infrared energy regime of an inverted plasmonic honeycomb lattice by a combination of Au+ focused ion beam lithography with nanometric resolution, optical and electron spectroscopy, and finite-difference time-domain simulations. The lattice consists of slits carved in a gold thin film, exhibiting hotspots and a set of bright and dark modes. We proposed that some of the dark modes detected by electron energy-loss spectroscopy are caused by antiferroelectric arrangements of the slit polarizations with two times the size of the hexagonal unit cell. The plasmonic resonances take place within the 0.5_2 eV energy range, indicating that they could be suitable for a synergistic coupling with excitons in two-dimensional transition metal dichalcogenides materials or for designing nanoscale sensing platforms based on near-field enhancement over a metallic surface.

The future developments of three-dimensional magnetic nanotechnology require the control of domain wall dynamics by means of current pulses. While this has been extensively studied in planar magnetic strips (planar nanowires), few reports exist in cylindrical geometry, where Bloch point domain walls are expected to have intriguing properties. Here we report this investigation in cylindrical magnetic Ni nanowires with geometrical notches. Experimental work based on synchrotron X-ray magnetic circular dichroism (XMCD) combined with photoemission electron microscopy (PEEM) indicates that large current densities induce domain wall nucleation while smaller currents move domain walls preferably against the current direction. In the region where no pinning centers are present we found domain wall velocity of about 1 km/s. The domain wall motion along current was also detected in the vicinity of the notch region. Pinning of domain walls has been observed not only at geometrical constrictions but also outside of them. Thermal modelling indicates that large current densities temporarily raise the temperature in the nanowire above the Curie temperature leading to nucleation of domain walls during the system cooling. Micromagnetic modelling with spin-torque effect shows that for intermediate current densities Bloch point domain walls with chirality parallel to the Oersted field propagate antiparallel to the current direction. In other cases, domain walls can be bounced from the notches and/or get pinned outside their positions. We thus find that current is not only responsible for the domain wall propagation but is also a source of pinning due to the Oersted field action.

We present experimental evidence of metastable magnetic domains in cylindrical CoNi nanowires. Transverse (perpendicular) domains have been previously observed only in flat nanostrips. Here they are found together with more conventional vortex domains along the same cylindrical nanowire, denoting a bistable system with similar free energies. The surface and the inner magnetization distribution in both types of domains are analyzed by Photo-Emission Electron Microscopy (PEEM) with X-ray magnetic circular dichroism (XMCD) contrast, and hysteresis loop in individual nanowires are measured by Magneto-optical Kerr effect. These experimental data are understood and compared with complementary micromagnetic simulations. The transverse domain states are potentially more important for sensing and recording applications than commonly observed vortex domains since they create larger surface stray fields.

Magnetic nanoparticles are important building blocks for future technologies ranging from nano-medicine to spintronics. Many related applications require nanoparticles with tailored magnetic properties. However, despite significant efforts undertaken towards this goal, a broad and poorly-understood dispersion of magnetic properties is reported, even within mono-disperse samples of the canonical ferromagnetic 3d transition metals. We address this issue by investigating the magnetism of a large number of size- and shape-selected, individual nanoparticles of Fe, Co, and Ni using a unique set of complementary characterization techniques. At room temperature only superparamagnetic behavior is observed in our experiments for all Ni nanoparticles within the investigated sizes, which range from 8 to 20 nm. However, Fe and Co nanoparticles can exist in two distinct magnetic states at any size in this range: (i) a superparamagnetic state as expected from the bulk and surface anisotropies known for the respective materials and as observed for Ni; and (ii) a state with unexpected stable magnetization at room temperature. This striking state is assigned to significant modifications of the magnetic properties arising from metastable lattice defects in the core of the nanoparticles as concluded by calculations and atomic structural characterization. Also related with the structural defects, we find that the magnetic state of Fe and Co nanoparticles can be tuned by thermal treatment enabling one to tailor their magnetic properties for applications. We report the near-edge x-ray absorption fine structure (NEXAFS) spectrum of a single layer of graphite (graphene) obtained by micromechanical cleavage of Highly Ordered Pyrolytic Graphite (HOPG) on a SiO2 substrate. We utilized a PhotoEmission Electron Microscope (PEEM) to separately study single- double- and few-layers graphene (FLG) samples. In single-layer graphene we observe a splitting of the pi* resonance and a clear signature of the predicted interlayer state.
