Schools have been closed in many countries due to the on-going COVID-19 pandemic, but education continues online. Little is known about how parents cope with educating their children in this unprecedented situation. Here, we present the results of a rapid survey examining the experience of Czech parents of children in Grades 1-9 (Age ~ 6-15; N = 9,810) with respect to education at home during the COVID-19 lockdown. This survey was distributed widely, but only online and parents participated voluntarily. Mainly families with an internet connection and interested in their children’s education (i.e., the majority of families with school-aged children in the Czech Republic) took part in the survey. The results show that these families tend to cope well with the current educational situation and view the overall schoolwork transferred to homes as useful. Most children spend 2-4 hours a day studying, while parents help them at least half the time. Parents mostly explain task instructions, check the work their children have done, and teach new topics. To a lesser extent, they help their children solve tasks. Teachers appear to assign tasks more often than they provide feedback and/or interact with children. Some parents face difficulties, but those are generally not severe. These include, most notably, a lack of time, issues with technologies, and inadequate teaching skills and content knowledge. Altogether, this work maps the current educational situation in a large segment of Czech families and highlights possible pitfalls to be avoided: in the Czech Republic and beyond.

This chapter focuses on the teacher Daniela. What we want to show through her case is most importantly the fact that the change toward dialogic teaching was not straightforward. It was not a case of gradually increasing individual indicators and principles, with every subsequent lesson being better than previous one. On the contrary, the development took place through alternating phases of progress and of regression. We label this as a nonlinear development of change.

In this chapter, we elaborate on components of dialogic teaching. We present repertoires of teaching talk, and indicators and principles as elements that together bring dialogic teaching to life. Further, we describe some initiatives aimed at getting dialogic teaching into the classroom through professional development programs for teachers. We evaluate the success of individual studies and consider what caused the very diverse outcomes of these studies. The diverse outcomes provide evidence that it is not easy to train teachers to implement dialogic teaching in their classrooms. With this notion in mind, in the last part of this chapter we analyze what obstacles teachers face when trying to teach dialogically.

In this chapter, we will focus on the teacher Marek. In describing his case, we want to demonstrate that dialogic teaching is a complex and interlinked system consisting of elements (indicators, principles, and methods) that influence one another in either a synergistic or a discordant way. Tensions or even conflicts such as those documented here can arise between these elements.

In this chapter, we present the most important results of the quantitative analysis. We have two basic aims. First, we want to show any changes in the values of the measured indicators and principles between the lessons before and after the TPD program. Positive changes in the values offer evidence of the effects of the TPD program. Second, we analyze mutual relationships between the measured indicators and principles, taking student thoughts with reasoning as the dependent variable. Simply said, we determine the necessary appropriate conditions for this valuable kind of talk to occur.

This chapter concludes the story of our TPD and research project. First, we will summarize the main results reported in the individual chapters to briefly review what we have found. Second, we open a discussion about what led to any changes. We consider how the participating teachers surpassed various obstacles associated with dialogic teaching that are usually seen as critical. We also describe the general processes that we see as responsible for the success of participating teachers in transforming their teaching practices—appropriation of teaching tools and reflection. Finally, we share some concluding remarks, including our thoughts on possible directions for future research.

This chapter is an introduction to this book. First, we reveal our motivation for writing it—to contribute to understanding how teachers can improve classroom dialogue and thereby boost student learning. Second, we present the organization of the book and the content of individual chapters. Third, we define dialogic teaching. Fourth, we outline the essential concepts and theoretical inspirations that were the basis for this study.

This chapter introduces the methodology used in an intervention project we conducted with the aim of getting dialogic teaching into Czech classrooms. First, we describe the TPD program entitled “Effective Classroom Dialogue” that we conducted with two groups of teachers between 2013 and 2015. The aim was to induce a change toward dialogic teaching in participating classrooms and at the same time to study the processes of teacher development and learning during the TPD program. In the second part of this chapter, we present our methods of data collection during the TPD program. In the third part of the chapter, we present how we analyzed the data. Finally, we discuss the ethical aspects and research limits of the intervention.

This chapter focuses on the role of teachers’ self-understanding and emotions in the process of change toward dialogic teaching. During the TPD program, we noticed that participating teachers differed in how they saw themselves, as well as in what emotions they expressed toward TPD, researchers, students, and their own teaching. We became interested in whether these differences could affect the outcomes of TPD, as individual teachers differed in the extent of the implemented changes. The analysis of the data presented in this chapter confirmed our expectations.

This paper examines the emotions that eight teachers experienced during intervention research project on the transformation of their teaching practices. During the program which we designed, the teachers were trained to transform their teaching practices so that they would include more features of dialogic education. In this paper, we analyze data from repeated interviews with teachers who participated in our project. Based on qualitative analysis of our data, we differentiated among four groups of teachers, each with a unique self-understanding. The groups included teachers who were: perfect, eager to learn, in a good mood, and uncertain. Our paper shows that each group experienced specific emotions during the program. The only group that did not experience negative emotions was teachers in a good mood. These teachers also implemented the fewest changes in their teaching practices. Our results thus show that a lack of negative emotions limited the efficacy of teacher development.

Přestože hodnoceni je zasadni, vime meně o tom, jak ucitele chapou a řidi hodnoceni. Nasledujici studie prozkoumala nahlednuti do vnimani spravneho hodnoceni ucitelů nižsiho sekundarniho odborneho vzdělavani a způsobů hodnoceni, ktere fungovaly, a těch, ktere nefungovaly ve svých třidach. Udaje byly zpracovavany prostřednictvim individualnich polostrukturovaných rozhovorů s deseti (7-9) rocniky anglictiny jako ucitelů cizich jazyků, kteři zastupuji sedm nižsich střednich skol v Ceske republice. Byla identifikovana, analyzovana a interpretovana koncepce spravedliveho posouzeni a hodnoceni, ktera fungovala ci ne. Zjistěni prokazala použiti konkretnich a soustředěných hodnoticich kriterii a posouzeni, ktere neni spravedlive, cestne a transparentni, jako spravedlive posouzeni. Výsledky ukazaly, že slovni hodnoceni je nejlepsim přikladem hodnoceni, ktere funguje při samostatnem hodnoceni, ktere nepracuje se studenty.

Clanek na zakladě kvantitativni a kvalitativni analýz y odpovědi 9810 rodiců zkouma vnimani vzdělavani v domacim prostředi z pohledu rodiců v době uzavřených zakladnich skol z důvodu pandemie COVID-19. Cilem empirickeho setřeni bylo odpovědět na otazky, jake bariery ve vzdělavani doma v době uzavřených zakladnich skol rodice identifikuji, jaka řeseni by uvitali, ale take jaký je vztah mezi rodinou a skolou v situaci vzdělavani doma. Analyzovana data pochazeji z výzkumu Vzdělavani doma, který byl uskutecněn v dubnu 2020 za podpory Ceske televize. Výsledky výzkumu ukazuji, že existuje zasadni rozdil mezi rodici prvostupňových a druhostupňových žaků, kteři jednak vnimaji odlisne bariery a jednak jmenuji jina řeseni nastale situace. Význam výsledků tkvi v tom, že nejenom upozorňuji na bariery ve spolupraci mezi rodinou a skolou, ale naznacuji i možna řeseni problemů, ktere přinesla neocekavana situace.

The purpose of this qualitative research paper was to explore the role of a teacher in supporting students' epistemic understanding and argumentation. The main subject of our research was expert teacher Daniela, who had been teaching Czech language arts for twelve years and undertook a developmental program on dialogic teaching three years prior to this study. Data were gathered through structured observations, six video recordings of teaching, and several interviews with the teacher and students. The findings showed that the teacher tried to depersonalise students' arguments and sought to make the argument jointly owned by everybody in the classroom so that it was possible to discuss the nature of the argument and not the student's personal opinion. The findings reveal that the depersonalisation is a unique procedure that could increase students' participation in dialogic argumentation while preserving their personal opinions.

Příspěvek vychází z dat získaných v rámci intervenčního výzkumného projektu, v němž skupina učitelů prošla programem profesního rozvoje zaměřeným na to, aby byli učitelé s to implementovat do své výuky postupy tzv. dialogického vyučování. Dialogické vyučování, které tvoří teoretickou platformu této studie, je přístup, který usiluje o komunikační i kognitivní aktivizaci žáků (Alexander, 2006). Intervence se ukázala jako úspěšná v tom smyslu, že došloke změně komunikačního chování učitelů i jejich žáků ve sledovaných třídách. V průběhu analýzy dat jsme si však povšimli, že u všech učitelů dochází k porušování principu účelnosti. V teorii dialogického vyučování se přitom operuje s nutností dodržet tzv. princip účelnosti (tamtéž), jímž je míněno směřování jednotlivých aktivit a učebních úloh směrem k vytčenému cíli, kterým je zprostředkovávat žákům obsahy a praktiky konstituující učivo daného předmětu (Herbel-Eisenmann, Steele & Cirillo, 2013).V tomto příspěvku se nejprve zaměřujeme na to, jakou podobu mají bezúčelné pasáže identifikované ve vyučovacích hodinách. Představujeme typologii situací, v nichž dochází k porušení účelnosti, a popisujeme, čím toto porušení vzniká. Hovoříme o kategorii hádání tématu, kvazievokace a kvazi-reflexe, sousedského klábosení, zadání mimo dosah žáků a digresí do osobního života žáků. Jakožto příčiny vzniku bezúčelných pasáží popisujeme nezacílené převzetí výukovýchmetod a odklon výuky od původního plánu výuky, který učitel není s to zvrátit. Následně sledujeme vztah mezi klíčovým indikátorem žákovských replik s argumenty a naplňováním účelnosti, abychom zjistili, jak přítomnost dialogického vyučování souvisí s účelností výuky. Z našich nálezů přitom vyplývá, že pokud dochází k posilování indikátoru žákovských replik s argumenty, dochází také k posilování účelnosti.Klíčová slova: dialogické vyučování, princip účelnosti, bezúčelnost výuky, obsah výuky, žákovské repliky s argumenty, intervenční program pro učitele.

This paper examines dialogic teaching in Czech lower secondary schools and shows how Czech teachers use forms of dialogic teaching in their practice. We understand dialogic teaching as a method that harnesses communication and students’ work with language to promote their activity, deepen their thinking and enrich their understanding (Alexander, 2006). Yet, although Czech teachers praise the benefits of dialogic teaching, they are not capable of fully implementing its forms in their teaching. This paper identifies the basic deficits that accompany attempts at dialogic teaching. These are insufficient emphasis on rational argumentation and semantic noise. The paper concludes by suggesting that it is necessary to further develop the concept of dialogic teaching so that it can be incorporated into everyday teaching.

V teto studii představujeme projekt akcniho výzkumu výukove komunikace realizovaný na Department of Educational Sciences Filozoficke fakulty Masarykovy univerzity. Jeho jadrem se stal rozvojový program pro ucitele zaměřený na změnu komunikacnich postupů směrem k tzv. Dialogic teaching. V průběhu skolniho roku 2013/2014 jsme sledovali ctyři ucitele, kteři se ucastnili tohoto programu, s cilem zjistit, do jake miry vedla ucast v programu k realne změně komunikace mezi uciteli a žaky ve skolni třidě. Z analýzy dat vyplynulo, že zucastněni ucitele realně proměnili sve komunikacni postupy – v průměru se zvýsila otevřenost a kognitivni narocnosti otazek, delka žakovských replik a pocet připadů, kdy sami žaci iniciovali komunikaci. Zaroveň se vsak ukazalo, že proces změny je u každeho ucitele unikatni a nema jednotnou trajektorii.

Tento text je reakcí na diskusní příspěvek Jiřího Mareše věnovaný rozboru námi realizovaného výzkumného projektu, který v roce 2012 kulminoval publikací monografie Komunikace ve školní třídě (Šeďová, Švaříček & Šalamounová, 2012). Nešlo o výzkum komunikačních struktur – jak sugeruje název předchozího příspěvku –, nýbrž o obecněji zaměřené etnografické (tedy popisné) šetření zaměřené na to, jak probíhá komunikace mezi učiteli a žáky na druhém stupni základní školy, a to ve vybraných předmětech humanitního typu.Jiří Mareš vznáší vůči našemu výzkumu mnoho kritických připomínek a klade řadu otázek. Pokusíme se je utřídit do několika problémových okruhů, jimž se budeme dále věnovat. Uvádí, že: 1. výzkum měl metodologické nedostatky v oblasti sběru dat; 2. v analýze jsme se přehnaně koncentrovali na IRF strukturu, která je navíc podána zjednodušujícím způsobem; 3. nezkoumali jsme mnohé významné otázky, které s výukovou komunikací souvisejí.

This paper introduces an empirical study that examines how teachers evaluate pupils’ responses. The study draws on research undertaken at four secondary schools in the Czech Republic. It transpires that feedback has a stable position in the structure of communication; however, it is used only to verify pupils’ responses and not to elaborate them. An important feature of feedback is its implicitness and near-zero content value resulting from the teachers’ preferences to avoid explicit evaluative comments. This type of feedback is not in accordance with the concepts of dialogical education that currently dominate the field of the theory of educational communication.

Rozhovor s profesorkou Francescou Gobbo proběhl v Brně 17. května 2016 v době jejiho třiměsicniho pobytu na Ustavu pedagogických věd Filozoficke fakulty Masarykovy univerzity.

Kritický esej popisuje tři soucasne diskurzy, ktere natolik ohrožuji zakladni principy pedagogických věd, že lze s nadsazkou hovořit o konci pedagogiky. Koncem pedagogiky je mysleno nahrazeni pedagogických konstant jinými prvky. Diskurz je pojiman jako urcitý způsob vnimani skutecnosti v danem oboru a dane době, což se v prve řadě projevuje v jazyce a ve druhe řadě v ramovani debaty uvnitř daneho oboru. Postupně analyzujeme tři diskurzy (diskurz evidence, praktickeho výzkumu a technologický diskurz) a detailně popisujeme jednotlive koncepty a myslenky, ze kterých jsou dane diskurzy vystavěny. V zavěru shrnujeme vliv popsaných diskurzů a ukazujeme, jak mohou nahradit některe pedagogicke koncepty, pokud nedojde ke konsolidaci oboru.

V teto studii se zabývame otazkou, jake je pojeti výuky u zacinajicich ucitelů na Masarykově univerzitě. Vychazime z analýz y 19 hloubkových polostrukturovaných rozhovorů se zacinajicimi uciteli z různých fakult. Identifikujeme různa pojeti výuky, mezi nimiž dominuje důraz na předavani znalosti a interakci se studenty. Vedle toho rozlisujeme různa sebepojeti vysokoskolských ucitelů – někteři se definuji předevsim jako vědci, jini jako ucitele, posledni skupina se chape jako univerzalni, vyrovnaně propojujici vědu a výzkum. Za hlavni přinos teto studie považujeme skutecnost, že se podařilo propojit sebepojeti a pojeti výuky – vědci, ucitele a univerzalove pojimaji svoji výuku různě. Respondenti-vědci se soustředi předevsim na předavani poznatků, respondenti-ucitele chapou dobrou výuku jako energii a cas věnovaný studentům a respondenti- -univerzalove zdůrazňuji prakticnost věděni a cil motivovat studenty, aby na sobě pracovali sami.

Přispěvek se zabýva otazkou, jak ucitele subjektivně vnimaji výukovou komunikaci (jeji nastaveni a průběh). Výsledna podoba výukove komunikace je zavisla primarně na uciteli, neboť pravě ucitel urcuje jeji podobu – voli tema komunikace, vymezuje, kdo bude mluvit, přerusuje promluvy žaků a vybira dalsi mluvci, posuzuje, zda jsou odpovědi ve vztahu k danemu tematu relevantni, komentuje, co bylo řeceno, atd. (Myhill, Jones, & Hoper, 2006). Ucitel přitom ma jasný zaměr, proc komunikaci organizuje urcitým způsobem, a cil, ke kteremu daným nastavenim směřuje – ma vytvořenou představu o idealnim komunikacnim schematu, kteremu se snaži v realne hodině přibližit. V tomto kontextu můžeme hovořit o subjektivnich teoriich ucitelů o výukove komunikaci, ktere jsou soucasti jejich pojeti výuky (srov. Mares et al., 1996). Cilem přispěvku je tyto subjektivni teorie prozkoumat na zakladě analýzy dat z hloubkových rozhovorů s uciteli. Přispěvek vychazi z terenniho etnografi ckeho výzkumu zaměřeneho na komunikaci mezi ucitelem a žaky na 2. stupni zakladni skoly. Sledovana byla výukova komunikace v hodinach sestnacti různých ucitelů na ctyřech různých skolach. Data byla ziskana pomoci přimeho pozorovani a videonahravek vyucovacich hodin, dale pomoci hloubkových rozhovorů s uciteli a žaky a dotazniků pro žaky. Přispěvek představuje výsledky empiricke studie zaměřene na ucitelske otazky a žakovske odpovědi v ramci komunikace ve skolni třidě na druhem stupni zakladni skoly. Nejprve jsou popsany ucitelske otazky, ktere tvoři prvni cast zakladni organizacni struktury výukove komunikace a představuji až 70 % vsech interakci v hodině). Nasledně se přispěvek věnuje žakovským odpovědim a popisuje některe kognitivni strategie, ktere mohou žaci použit při zodpovidani otazek ucitele uplatnit.
