Abstract

The American Cancer Society reports that kidney cancer is the seventh most common type of cancer in men and the 10th most common type of cancer in women in the [...], * Context.--Histology, the traditional method of examining surgical tissue under a microscope, is a time-consuming process involving the fixation of tissue in formalin, dehydration, embedding in paraffin, and cutting into thin sections for hematoxylin-eosin (H&E) staining. Frozen section analysis is a faster alternative used in surgery to quickly evaluate tissue, but it has limitations, such as the size of the specimens that can be analyzed and difficulties with fatty and bony tissues. Objective.--To rapidly examine nonprocessed kidney tumors using nonlinear microscopy (NLM), a fluorescence microscopy technique that can rapidly visualize fresh or fixed, rapidly stained, nonprocessed tissue resembling H&E histology. This technology eliminates the need for fixation, embedding, microtome sectioning, or slide preparation. Design.--In this study, a total of 190 tissue specimens were collected from 46 patients who underwent partial or radical nephrectomy. Results.--Two genitourinary pathologists confirmed that diagnostically important features present in the H&E images could also be identified in the NLM images. Conclusions.--The results of this study demonstrated that NLM had a high degree of correspondence with H&E staining for the classical variants of renal cell carcinoma. NLM offers several clinical benefits, such as facilitating rapid renal cell carcinoma diagnosis, assessment of targeted kidney biopsies for both tumor and medical kidney diseases, and collection of fresh renal cell carcinoma tissue for molecular studies. Abstract

Objectives Traditional histopathology is a time-intensive and labor-intensive process involving tissue formalin fixation, paraffin embedding, and microtoming into thin sections for H&E staining. Frozen section analysis is a modality used during surgery to quickly evaluate tissue, but it has limitations, such as the size and number of the specimens that can be analyzed as well as difficulties with fatty and bony tissues. Our objective was to investigate the performance of nonlinear microscopy, a fluorescence microscopy technique, for the rapid examination of resected lung tumors. Methods In this proof-of-principle study, nonlinear microscopy imaging of resected lung tissue was performed on a total of 73 tissue specimens collected from 13 patients who underwent lobectomy, segmentectomy, or wedge resection for pulmonary nodules. Results Two pathologists reviewed the digital nonlinear microscopy images in comparison to the corresponding histopathologic H&E slides from a variety of pulmonary pathologies. Conclusions This study demonstrated that nonlinear microscopy readily replicates traditional H&E staining for both lung tumors and nonneoplastic pulmonary structures. Nonlinear microscopy provides many advantages over frozen section analysis and is an optical imaging platform that has the potential to augment rapid pathologic evaluation of resected tissues in the age of digital pathology. Chatila[sup.2] , Sevgi Keles[sup.2] , Louis-Marie Charbonnier[sup.2] , Birgitta Schmidt[sup.2] , Seymour Rosen[sup.1] [sup.2] , Nancy [...], Background Immunodysregulation, polyendocrinopathy, enteropathy, X-linked (IPEX) disorder is an autoimmune disease caused by loss-of-function mutations in the gene encoding the forkhead box P3 (FOXP3) transcription factor. These mutations affect the normal function of circulating regulatory T cells. IPEX is characterized by profound immune dysregulation leading to dermatitis, enteropathy, multiple endocrinopathies and failure to thrive. Different forms of renal injury have also been noted in these patients but these have been described to a very limited extent. Case-Diagnosis Three patients with IPEX with characteristic renal findings and mutations in FOXP3, including one novel mutation, are described. Case presentations are followed by a review of the renal manifestations noted in IPEX and the range of therapeutic options for this disorder. Conclusions We recommend that IPEX be considered in the differential diagnosis of young children who present with signs of immune dysregulation with a concomitant renal biopsy demonstrating immune complex deposition in a membranous-like pattern and/or interstitial nephritis. Abstract

Leiomyoadenomatoid tumors of the epididymis are exceedingly rare biphasic tumors composed of an adenomatoid component in the form of gland-like structures lined by single flat or cuboidal cells admixed with smooth muscle. Radiological and gross findings cannot distinguish leiomyoadenomatoid tumors from the more common classic adenomatoid tumors or leiomyomas, and careful microscopic examination is critical in the identification of this esoteric variant. The histogenesis of this entity remains ambiguous. Common hypotheses include a collision tumor, a variant of an adenomatoid tumor with a smooth muscle component, or an adenomatoid tumor arising in the background of reactive smooth muscle hyperplasia. We present 2 cases of leiomyoadenomatoid tumors with diffuse nuclear WT1 positivity in both the adenomatoid and smooth muscle components, supporting the mesothelial origin of these tumors. 24. Education in the U.S.S.R.: Recent Legislation and Statistics.

Abstract

Recent developments and emerging trends in Soviet education, as reflected in legislation and statistical reports, are reported. First, the structure of Soviet secondary and higher education is outlined. Then, a description is given of the July 1973 Fundamentals, a legislative statement of principles focusing on the Soviet ideal of the education system. Equal educational opportunity, free tuition for all education after kindergarten, and citizen right to enroll in higher education with appropriate prior education are emphasized. Comparative statistics are given for Soviet and U.S. education in terms of specific education levels, nationality groups, and women. Trends in Soviet education include the (1) growth of nursery, kindergarten, and upper-secondary school enrollments; (2) increase in the general education component in vocational schools; (3) large role of secondary schools for technical specialization; and (4) continuing focus in higher education on developing specialists to serve the needs of the national economy. Soviet educational needs include revising the curriculum, improving the teaching quality, and broadening the training of specialists. (AV)

Abstract

This study, one in a series on education in the Soviet Union, focuses on the status of higher education in the system and in the state. In an introductory section, basic legislation and decrees and the education ladder, or organizational structure, are outlined. The second section describes the organization, functions, and institutions of the U.S.S.R. Ministry of Higher and Secondary Specialized Institutions, and the Republic Ministries of Higher and Secondary Specialized Education. Basic requirements for admission to higher education and admission to specialties are outlined in section three. The fourth section focuses on higher education programs: types of institutions, undergraduate study, and graduate study. Teacher education and certification, including teacher-training institutions and curricula and certification procedures are considered in section five, and the growth of higher education in the 1970's is analyzed in the final section, where data on specialty group enrollments and enrollments of women and full- and part-time students are presented. Appended are lists of official Soviet specialties in higher education, the names of the higher education institutions especially recognized by the Soviet government for their achievements in training specialists and in research, and a list of references. Following an introductory description of the structure, administration, and general character of the Soviet system of education, this document discusses the status of educational research and innovation in the USSR. The system of research is outlined, and the organization and areas of inquiry of the major research institutions, including the divisions of the Academy of Pedagogical Science and the Scientific-Research Institute on Problems of the Higher School, are reviewed. Recent educational innovations reported in the document include creating special schools for the gifted in science and mathematics, combining vocational and general education, adding management to the official list of higher education specialties, revising the syllabus of preschool education, providing schools specializing in foreign language instruction, and organizing preparatory departments for higher education. Abstract

This study on secondary education in the Soviet Union examines characteristics of the various kinds of secondary schools--general secondary education, secondary education, secondary specialized education, and vocational education--and aspects of the Soviet examination system. The first section on general secondary education provides information such as objectives; organization; marking and examination systems; enrollment; problems; basic curriculum; alternative programs; subject matter reform; teacher training; educational administration; and research in secondary education. Next, an overview of secondary specialized education, the training of specialized technicians or professional support personnel in a wide range of specialties, includes information on objectives, funding, entrance requirements, specialty fields of study, enrollment, terminology used to describe differences in Soviet Schools, courses of study, graduation requirements, teacher training, and administration and research in secondary specialized education. A third section focusing on vocational education presents an overview of purpose, traditional vocational skills, teacher training, administration, and research in vocational education. The final section is devoted to the final examination in Soviet secondary schools. Appendices making up nearly half of the publication provide the text of general instructions and questions for secondary school final examinations. Tables showing the 10-year curriculum in Russian and Ukrainian general secondary schools, the all-year curriculum in Estonian general secondary schools, and sample one-, two-, and three-year vocational school curriculums are provided where appropriate. Abstract

Introduction Renal tubular dysfunction with progression into chronic tubulointerstitial nephritis and end stage renal disease is a cardinal manifestation of methylmalonic acidemia (MMA), a common and severe organic acidemia characterized [...], Background Classical (or isolated) methylmalonic acidemia (MMA) is a heterogeneous inborn error of metabolism most typically caused by mutations in the vitamin B12-dependent enzyme methylmalonyl-CoA mutase (MUT). With the improved survival of individuals with MMA, chronic kidney disease has become recognized as part of the disorder. The precise description of renal pathology in MMA remains uncertain. Methods Light microscopy, histochemical, and ultrastructural studies were performed on the native kidney obtained from a 19-year-old patient with mut MMA who developed end stage renal disease and underwent a combined liver-kidney transplantation. Results The light microscopy study of the renal parenchyma in the MMA kidney revealed extensive interstitial fibrosis, chronic inflammation, and tubular atrophy. Intact proximal tubules were distinguished by the widespread formation of large, circular, pale mitochondria with diminished cristae. Histochemical preparations showed a reduction of cytochrome c oxidase and NADH activities, and the electron microscopy analysis demonstrated loss of cytochrome c enzyme activity in these enlarged mitochondria. Conclusions Our results demonstrate that the renal pathology of MMA is characterized by megamitochondria formation in the proximal tubules in concert with electron transport chain dysfunction. Our findings suggest therapies that target mitochondrial function as a treatment for the chronic kidney disease of MMA. Abstract

"International/Intercultural Education Reports" represents an experimental effort by the Office of Education Institute of International Studies to share with professionals some recent information, ideas, and resources in three areas of international/intercultural education that are otherwise insufficiently provided for in ongoing reports or publications programs: 1) Educational experience and perspectives from other countries relevant to program priorities in the Education Division of DHEW; 2) concepts, programs and developments concerning the intercultural dimension in general education in the United States; and, 3) foreign views of American education. In this volume, the focus is on the current Federal priority of career education. It is hoped that this collection of articles, which report on selected foreign initiatives and practices, may offer insights to U.S. planners in the field. The fourteen articles do not attempt to provide full analyses of these activities, but rather are intended to alert concerned American specialists about experiences in Sweden, France, Pakistan, and the U.S.S.R., and elsewhere. The articles draw heavily on foreign sources and are well-documented with references that provide useful starting points for any further analysis. (Author/OPH)

This study focuses on the training of students from the developing countries of Asia, Africa, and Latin America in a special institution in the Soviet Union established for the purpose, the Peoples' Friendship University. Since its founding in 1960, this unique institution has been the subject of considerable interest among educators and others concerned with international relations and development. Sufficient time has now elapsed to permit at least a preliminary assessment of the institution's pedagogical effectiveness and limitations. The author attempts to contribute to this kind of analysis in his review of the evidence from the university's first dozen years from 1960 to 1972. (Author/HS)

Abstract

The purpose of this annotated bibliography is to provide researchers, analysts, teachers, and advanced students, interested in various aspects of Soviet education, with a body of reference materials covering the large number of relevant articles and monographs which have been published since the late 1950's. The bibliography includes 281 titles with a 36-title supplement, arranged alphabetically by authors within 78 subject categories; where necessary, cross-referencing is used. Although American authors are the primary sources, items by foreign authors, whose articles are written in English or have been translated into English, are also included. A number of the English translations of articles and monographs by Soviet authors are the work of the Joint Publications Research Service, Office of Technical Services, U. S. Deaprtment of Commerce. A wide range of views is expressed in the annotated items, and their inclusion does not constitute endorsement by the Office of Education of any one point of view. The Soviet articles provide the researcher and serious scholar certain information not found in the other sources, as well as insight into the Soviet concept of the educational system. (Author/DJB)

Abstract

This study is one of a series of the Office of Education publications on major aspects of Soviet Education. Focusing on recent developments in training and research programs within the Soviet Union, it points up the continued growth in size and diversity of international education programs, and shows their relationship to the Soviet national objectives. This report uses the general term, international education, to designate a broad range of programs: 1) the traditional study of other lands and peoples in elementary, secondary, and high education; 2) interdisciplinary approachs to specialized study of world affairs, international relations and policy particularly in colleges and universities; 3) comparative education and cross cultural research; 4) educational exchange and study abroad for firsthand immersion in other cultures; 5) technical assistance to educational development through foreign aid programs; and, 6) international cooperation in intellectual exchange and educational development through international organizations and multilateral arrangements. The descriptions and analyses of specific programs in these categories provide the basis for comparisons with the ways the United States and other countries plan and function with respect to the international dimensions of education. 37. Final Examinations in the Russian Ten-Year School.

Abstract

In May and June of each year, Soviet students who have completed grades one through ten face a final examination in each of the major subjects which they have studied. The examinations are constructed by the ministries of education in the Soviet republics and are submitted to the individual school district authorities. The type, form, and purpose of the examination are relatively constant each year. The examinations are aimed at verifying the amount of knowledge acquired by the students upon completion of their secondary education, and reflect an effort to have students master a prescribed amount of knowledge from textbooks, other required readings, and practical work. Each pupil selects a card bearing the questions he or she will answer; the student must provide the answers orally, and when appropriate, on the blackboard. Answers are judged by a committee composed of the school director, teachers, and an official from the local district education department. This booklet provides an outline of the course content covered by the 1964 examinations in algebra, geometry, physics, chemistry, history of the USSR and social sciences, and foreign languages (English, German, and French). Abstract

This bulletin examines the current status of Soviet training programs for Africa: the training of personnel from Africa in the U.S.S.R; Soviet study and research in the U.S.S.R. on Africa; and training programs in Africa connected with Soviet developmental projects. The increasing Soviet penetration of Africa has considerable import for the free world's efforts to aid the emerging countries of the subcontinent. It is therefore of value to attempt to gauge the extent of Soviet penetration and make rough estimates of some aspects, with an understanding, however, that the information is incomplete and primarily from Soviet sources. For more than general and tentative conclusions on the programs reported in this bulletin, further research and independent verification are necessary. Abstract

The demand for basic information on Soviet higher education continues to grow. Previous bulletins on Soviet education published by the Office of Education have either been overall surveys ("Education in the U.S.S.R.," Bulletin 1957, No. 14; "Soviet Commitment to Education," Bulletin 1959, No. 16) or studies of general elementary, secondary and teacher education ("Soviet Education Programs," Bulletin 1960, No. 17). The purpose of this bulletin and of the forthcoming "Part II: Studies and Students" is to provide current basic information on the Polish system of higher education. The material is intended primarily for scholars in the comparative education field, university officials, students involved in academic exchanges, and specialists on Eastern Europe. Sources include current Polish laws on education and higher education, published Polish statistics and handbooks, as well as discussions with education officials and educators in the Ministry of Higher Education, the Ministry of Education, and in higher and other educational institutions in Warsaw and Cracow. The document provides a brief background on the elementary-secondary education system and the Ministry of Education before describing the higher education system.
